Abstract
We report herein a synthetically useful catalytic system for aliphatic C-H oxidation with a mononuclear nonheme cobalt(II) complex and m-chloroperbenzoic acid (m-CPBA). Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that a high-valent cobalt-oxygen species (e.g., cobalt(IV)-oxo or cobalt(III)-oxyl) is the oxidant that effects C-H oxidation via a rate-determining hydrogen atom abstraction (HAA) step.

Abstract
The tert-butyl group is a common aliphatic motif extensively employed to implement steric congestion and conformational rigidity in organic and organometallic molecules. Because of the combination of a high bond dissociation energy (~100 kcal mol-1) and limited accessibility, in the absence of directing groups, neither radical nor organometallic approaches are effective for the chemical modification of tert-butyl C-H bonds. Herein we overcome these limits by employing a highly electrophilic manganese catalyst, [Mn(CF3bpeb)(OTf)2], that operates in the strong hydrogen bond donor solvent nonafluoro-tert-butyl alcohol (NFTBA) and catalytically activates hydrogen peroxide to generate a powerful manganese-oxo species that effectively oxidizes tert-butyl C-H bonds. Leveraging on the interplay of steric, electronic, medium and torsional effects, site-selective and product chemoselective hydroxylation of the tert-butyl group is accomplished with broad reaction scope, delivering primary alcohols as largely dominant products in preparative yields. Late-stage hydroxylation at tert-butyl sites is demonstrated on 6 densely functionalized molecules of pharmaceutical interest. This work uncovers a novel disconnection approach, harnessing tert-butyl as a potential functional group in strategic synthetic planning for complex molecular architectures.

Abstract
The catalytic transformation of C-H to C-N bonds offers rapid access to fine chemicals and high-performance materials, but achieving high selectivity from undirected aminations of unactivated C(sp3)-H bonds remains an outstanding challenge. We report the origins of the reactivity and selectivity of a Cu-catalyzed C-H amidation of simple alkanes. Using a combination of experimental and computational mechanistic studies and energy decomposition techniques, we uncover a switch in mechanism from inner-sphere to outer-sphere coupling between alkyl radicals and the active Cu(II) catalyst with increasing substitution of the alkyl radical. The combination of computational predictions and detailed experimental validation shows that simultaneous minimization of both Cu-C covalency and alkyl radical size increases the rate of reductive elimination and that both strongly electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents on the catalyst accelerate the selectivity-determining C-N bond formation process as a result of a change in mechanism. These findings offer design principles for the development of improved catalyst scaffolds for radical C-H functionalization reactions.

Abstract
Alcohol dehydrogenases are a well-known group of enzymes in the class of oxidoreductases that use electron transfer cofactors such as NAD(P)+/NAD(P)H for oxidation or reduction reactions of alcohols or carbonyl compounds respectively. These enzymes are utilized mainly as purified enzymes and offer some advantages in terms of green chemistry. They are environmentally friendly and a sustainable alternative to traditional chemical synthesis of bulk and fine chemicals. Industry has implemented several whole-cell biocatalytic processes to synthesize pharmaceutically active ingredients by exploring the high selectivity of enzymes. Unlike the whole cell system where cofactor regeneration is well conserved within the cellular environment, purified enzymes require additional cofactors or a cofactor recycling system in the reaction, even though cleaner reactions can be carried out with fewer downstream work-up problems. The challenge of producing purified enzymes in large quantities has been solved in large part by the use of recombinant enzymes. Most importantly, recombinant enzymes find applications in many cascade biotransformations to produce several important chiral precursors. Inevitably, several dehydrogenases were engineered as mere recombinant enzymes could not meet the industrial requirements for substrate and stereoselectivity. In recent years, a significant number of engineered alcohol dehydrogenases have been employed in asymmetric synthesis in industry. In a parallel development, several enzymatic and non-enzymatic methods have been established for regenerating expensive cofactors (NAD+/NADP+) to make the overall enzymatic process more efficient and economically viable. In this review article, recent developments and applications of microbial alcohol dehydrogenases are summarized by emphasizing notable examples.

Abstract
In recent years, metalloenzymes-mediated highly selective oxidations of organic substrates under mild conditions have been inspiration for developing synthetic bioinspired catalyst systems, capable of conducting such processes in the laboratory (and, in the future, in industry), relying on easy-to-handle and environmentally benign oxidants such as H2 O2 . To date, non-heme manganese complexes with chiral bis-amino-bis-pyridylmethyl and structurally related ligands are considered as possessing the highest synthetic potential, having demonstrated the ability to mediate a variety of chemo- and stereoselective oxidative transformations, such as epoxidations, C(sp3 )-H hydroxylations and ketonizations, oxidative desymmetrizations, kinetic resolutions, etc. Furthermore, in the past few years non-heme Mn based catalysts have become the major platform for studies focused on getting insight into the molecular mechanisms of oxidant activation and (stereo)selective oxygen transfer, testing non-traditional hydroperoxide oxidants, engineering catalytic sites with enzyme-like substrate recognition-based selectivity, exploration of catalytic regioselectivity trends in the oxidation of biologically active substrates of natural origin. This contribution summarizes the progress in manganese catalyzed C-H oxygenative transformations of organic substrates, achieved essentially in the past 5 years (late 2018-2023).

Abstract
The titanium complex of the cis-1,2-diaminocyclohexane (cis-DACH) derived Berkessel-salalen ligand is a highly efficient and enantioselective catalyst for the asymmetric epoxidation of terminal olefins with hydrogen peroxide ("Berkessel-Katsuki catalyst"). We herein report that this epoxidation catalyst also effects the highly enantioselective hydroxylation of benzylic C-H bonds with hydrogen peroxide. Mechanism-based ligand optimization identified a novel nitro-salalen Ti-catalyst of the highest efficiency ever reported for asymmetric catalytic benzylic hydroxylation, with enantioselectivities of up to 98 % ee, while overoxidation to ketone is marginal. The novel nitro-salalen Ti-catalyst also shows enhanced epoxidation efficiency, as evidenced by e.g. the conversion of 1-decene to its epoxide in 90 % yield with 94 % ee, at a catalyst loading of 0.1 mol-% only.

Abstract
Direct oxygenation of nonactivated aliphatic C(sp3)-H groups with peroxycarboxylic acids in the presence of palladium tris(pyridylmethyl)amine complex (0.6 mol %) is reported, providing the corresponding hydroxylated derivatives in up to 94% yields. The oxidation of 3° C-H groups occurs stereospecifically, with the catalyst system demonstrating extremely high sensitivity to electronic effects (adamantane oxidation: 3°:2° up to >300). This suggests potential applications for the 3°-regioselective oxidative functionalization of complex molecules of natural origin.

Abstract
AbstractCatalytic oxidation of tricyclic endo-norbornene-fused tetrahydrofuran with the bimetallic nanocluster Cu/Au-PVP in the presence of H2O2 or t-BuOOH as the oxidant leads to C–H bond oxidation adjacent to the ether function to give 4-oxa-tricyclo[5.2.1.0]-8,9-exo-epoxydecane, however, oxidation with Pd/Au-PVP takes place at the C=C double bond to give the same epoxide and the oxidative three-bond forming dimeric product, dodecahydro-1,4:6,9-dimethanodibenzofurano[2,3-b:7,8-b′]bisoxolane. Formation of the latter product suggests the involvement of a reactive Pd–C intermediate. Similarly, oxidative C–C bond-forming reactions are observed in cycloaddition reactions of N2-Boc-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-γ-carbolines and 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid with Cu/Au-PVP (2–5 mol%) and H2O2 at 25 °C, providing two-bond-forming [4+2] cycloadducts. Under similar reaction conditions, Pd/Au-PVP did not produce the corresponding cycloadduct, indicating a need for complexation between Cu and the carboxylic acid group of 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid and the allylic amine function of the γ-carbolines during the cyclization reaction. The reported intermolecular coupling reactions using Pd/Au-PVP or Cu/Au-PVP nanocluster catalysts under oxidative conditions at 25 °C are unprecedented.

Abstract
Herein, we report the direct selective C-H lactonization of fatty acids (C5-C16), catalyzed by manganese(II) complexes bearing bis-amino-bis-pyridine ligands. The catalyst system uses the environmentally benign hydrogen peroxide as oxidant and exhibits high efficiency (100-200 TON), providing under optimized conditions γ-lactones in 60-90% yields. Remarkably, by changing the reaction conditions, the oxidation of hexanoic acid can be diverted toward formation of δ-caprolactone in up to 67% yield. Furthermore, the possibility of obtaining (ω-1)-hydroxy derivatives from linear C7-C10 acids in up to 48% yields has been demonstrated.

Abstract
Second-generation chiral-substituted poly-N-vinylpyrrolidinones (CSPVPs) (-)-1R and (+)-1S were synthesized by free-radical polymerization of (3aR,6aR)- and (3aS,6aS)-5-ethenyl-tetrahydro-2,2-dimethyl-4H-1,3-dioxolo[4,5-c]pyrrol-4-one, respectively, using thermal and photochemical reactions. They were produced from respective d-isoascorbic acid and d-ribose. In addition, chiral polymer (-)-2 was also synthesized from the polymerization of (S)-3-(methoxymethoxy)-1-vinylpyrrolidin-2-one. Molecular weights of these chiral polymers were measured using HRMS, and the polymer chain tacticity was studied using 13C NMR spectroscopy. Chiral polymers (-)-1R, (+)-1S, and (-)-2 along with poly-N-vinylpyrrolidinone (PVP, MW 40K) were separately used in the stabilization of Cu/Au or Pd/Au nanoclusters. CD spectra of the bimetallic nanoclusters stabilized by (-)-1R and (+)-1S showed close to mirror-imaged CD absorption bands at wavelengths 200-300 nm, revealing that bimetallic nanoclusters' chiroptical responses are derived from chiral polymer-encapsulated nanomaterials. Chemo-, regio-, and stereo-selectivity was found in the catalytic C-H group oxidation reactions of complex bioactive natural products, such as ambroxide, menthofuran, boldine, estrone, dehydroabietylamine, 9-allogibberic acid, and sclareolide, and substituted adamantane molecules, when catalyst Cu/Au (3:1) or Pd/Au (3:1) stabilized by CSPVPs or PVP and oxidant H2O2 or t-BuOOH were applied. Oxidation of (+)-boldine N-oxide 23 using NMO as an oxidant yielded 4,5-dehydroboldine 27, and oxidation of (-)-9-allogibberic acid yielded C6,15 lactone 47 and C6-ketone 48.

Abstract
Catalytic approaches to late-stage creation of new C-O bonds, especially via oxygenation of particular C-H groups in complex organic molecules, provide challenging tools for the synthesis of biologically active compounds and candidate drugs. In the last decade, significant efforts were invested in designing bioinspired iron based catalyst systems, capable of conducting selective oxidations of organic compounds. The key role of the oxygen-transferring high-valent iron-oxygen species in selective oxygenation is now well established; the next logical step would be gaining insight into the factors governing the oxidation chemo- and stereoselectivity, in relation to the peculiarities of their electronic structure, which would allow introducing the desired level of predictability into those catalytic transformations. In this Personal Account we analyze recent data on the reactivity of bioinspired formally oxoiron(V) catalytically active sites toward organic substrates having C=C and C(sp3 )-H groups. While the majority of reported oxoiron(V) active species are low-spin (S=1/2) complexes, the presence of strong electron-donating groups (NR1 R2 ) in the ligand backbone favors the high-spin (S=3/2) ground state. Remarkably, the high-spin perferryl species exhibit higher chemo-, regio-, and stereoselectivity in the oxidations than their low-spin counterparts, thus witnessing the significance of these subtle electronic effects for the selectivity of oxidations conducted by bioinspired catalysts of the Fe(PDP) family.
