Abstract
The recovery of palladium from spent auto-exhaust catalysts (SAE-catalysts) is of great significance for resource sustainability. Herein, we proposed an efficient closed-loop leaching and recovery method for palladium from SAE-catalysts using iodotrihalide ionic liquids (ILs). Recovery design was explored aimed at green leaching and process simplification. Iodotrihalide ILs exhibited exceptional performance in terms of leaching efficiency (99.1%), selectivity (selectivity > 6.8 ×103) and reusability (over 6 cycles). The mechanism study revealed that excellent leaching performance was attributed to the redox and complexation. Additionally, the chemical reaction-controlled model was best suited to describe the leaching process. Notably, under the optimal conditions determined by the response surface methodology, a high-purity Pd(II) solution (purity > 99.8%) was obtained. More significantly, it was ideal for practical applications due to the low-viscosity (36.0 cP), mild (55 °C) and one-step leaching and recovery. In conclusion, this work provides an eco-friendly method for recovering palladium from SAE-catalysts with its non-high corrosiveness and low environmental impact.

Abstract
Cocrystallization of the dimeric [Cu2(μ-I)2(CNXyl)4] (Xyl = 2,6-Me2C6H3, 1) and polymeric catena-[Cu(μ-I)(CNC6H3-2-Cl-6-Me)2] (2) complexes with I2 at different molar ratios between the reactants resulted in a series of (RNC)2CuI-based crystal polyiodides formed along with gradual accumulation of iodine, namely the cocrystals [1·I2]·[Cu(μ1,1-I3)(CNXyl)2]2 followed by the generation of [Cu(μ1,3-I3)(CNXyl)2]2·2I2 (5·2I2) or [Cu(μ1,1-I3)(CNC6H3-2-Cl-6-Me)2]2 and then [Cu(μ1,3-I3)(CNC6H3-2-Cl-6-Me)2]n·n/2I2. The polyiodide 5·2I2 exhibits a novel supramolecular motif─a purely inorganic halogen-bonded Cu2(μ1,3-I3)2 core in the chair conformation. The X-ray structure of 5·2I2 featuring I···I contacts was analyzed by a set of theoretical methods and attributed to moderately strong halogen bonding (from -3.2 to -3.9 kcal/mol); these interactions determine the supramolecular architecture of 5·2I2.

Abstract
The reaction of Cs[BrF6 ] with BrF5 gave the compound Cs[Br3 F16 ] with the unprecedented propeller-shaped, C3 -symmetric [(μ3 -F)(BrF5 )3 ]- anion. All other currently known fluoridobromates(V) contain only octahedral [BrF6 ]- anions, which, unlike the related [IF6 ]- anions, never exhibited stereochemical activity of the lone pair on the Br atoms. Despite the same coordination number of six for the Br atom in the [BrF6 ]- and [(μ3 -F)(BrF5 )3 ]- anions, the longer μ3 -F-Br bonds provide additional space, allowing the lone pairs on the Br atoms to become stereochemically active. Cs[Br3 F16 ] was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and quantum-chemical calculations for both the solid-state compound and the isolated anion at 0 K. Intrinsic bond orbital calculations show that the μ3 -F-Br bond is essentially ionic in nature and also underpin the stereochemical activity of the lone pairs of the Br(V) atoms.

Abstract
The reaction of the complex [Au(phen)Br2](PF6) (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) with molecular dibromine afforded {[Au(phen)Br2](Br3)}∞ (1). Single crystal diffraction analysis showed that the [Au(phen)Br2]+ complex cations were bridged by asymmetric tribromide anions to form infinite zig-zag chains featuring the motif ···Au–Br···Br–Br–Br···Au–Br···Br–Br–Br···. The complex cation played an unprecedented halogen bonding (XB) donor role engaging type-I and type-II XB noncovalent interactions of comparable strength with symmetry related [Br3]− anions. A network of hydrogen bonds connects parallel chains in an infinite 2D network, contributing to the layered supramolecular architecture. DFT calculations allowed clarification of the nature of the XB interactions, showing the interplay between orbital mixing, analyzed at the NBO level, and electrostatic contribution, explored based on the molecular potential energy (MEP) maps of the interacting synthons.

Abstract
Reactions between bromoselenate(IV)-containing solutions, dibromine and salts of pyridinium-family organic cations resulted in structurally diverse, bromine-rich polybromine-bromoselenates(IV): (4-MePyH)5[Se2Br9][SeBr6](Br3)2 (1), (2-MePyH)2{[SeBr6](Br2)} (2), (PyH)2{[SeBr5]Br(Br2)2} (3), (1-MePy)2{[SeBr6](Br2)} (4). The compounds feature halogen and (in the case of 3) chalcogen bonding in solid state, resulting in formation of supramolecular architectures of different dimensionality. DFT calculations allowed estimation of the energies of non-covalent interactions in 1–4; additionally, characterization by Raman spectroscopy was performed.

Abstract
Herein we report a general preparation of dihaloiodate salts of heterocyclic amines (tertiary and quaternary) with sterically accessible and hindered nitrogen atom. A number of such compounds were prepared from preformed HICl2 or HIBr2 formed in situ by the reaction of corresponding hydrogen halide, iodine and H2O2. The salts of 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) and its methylated derivatives, 1,3,5,7-tetraazaadamantane (HMTA), diazabicycloundecene (DBU) and 2,4,6-tri-tert-butylpyridine (TBP) were obtained in excellent yields and their structure was determined by NMR and Raman spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Non-hindered bases such as DABCO, HMTA and DBU formed IX2− salts, which further decomposed to complexes with interhalogen compounds due to formation of N…X halogen bonds. The dihaloiodiate(I) salts of sterically hindered 2,4,6-tri-tert-butylpyridine were stable. Its dichlorobromate(I) salt was also prepared via a different synthetic method using N-chlorosuccinimide as oxidant.

Abstract
A comparative computational study of stability of candidate structures for an as-yet unknown silver dichloride AgCl2 is presented. It is found that all considered candidates have a negative enthalpy of formation, but are unstable towards charge transfer and decomposition into silver(I) chloride and chlorine within the DFT and hybrid-DFT approaches in the entire studied pressure range. Within SCAN approach, several of the "true" AgIICl2 polymorphs (i.e. containing Ag(II) species) exhibit a region of stability below ca. 20 GPa. However, their stability with respect to aforementioned decomposition decreases with pressure by account of all three DFT methods, which suggests a limited possibility of high-pressure synthesis of AgCl2. Some common patterns in pressure-induced structural transitions observed in the studied systems also emerge, which further testify to an instability of hypothetical AgCl2 towards charge transfer and phase separation.

Abstract
Halogen bonding occurs between molecules featuring Lewis acidic halogen substituents and Lewis bases. It is often rationalized as a predominantly electrostatic interaction and thus interactions between ions of like charge (e. g., of anionic halogen bond donors with halides) seem counter-intuitive. Herein, we provide an overview on such complexes. First, theoretical studies are described and their findings are compared. Next, experimental evidences are presented in the form of crystal structure database analyses, recent examples of strong "anti-electrostatic" halogen bonding in crystals, and the observation of such interactions also in solution. We then compare these complexes to select examples of "counter-intuitive" adducts formed by other interactions, like hydrogen bonding. Finally, we comment on key differences between charge-transfer and electrostatic polarization.

Abstract
Dissolution of metals in organic solvents is relevant to various application fields, such as metal extraction from ores or secondary resources, surface etching or polishing of metals, direct synthesis of organometallic compounds, and separation of metals from other compounds. Organic solvents for dissolution of metals can offer a solution when aqueous systems fail, such as separation of metals from metal oxides, because both the metal and metal oxide could codissolve in aqueous acidic solutions. This review critically discusses organic media (conventional molecular organic solvents, ionic liquids, deep-eutectic solvents and supercritical carbon dioxide) for oxidative dissolution of metals in different application areas. The reaction mechanisms of dissolution processes are discussed for various lixiviant systems which generally consist of oxidizing agents, chelating agents, and solvents. Different oxidizing agents for dissolution of metals are reviewed such as halogens, halogenated organics, donor-acceptor electron-transfer systems, polyhalide ionic liquids, and others. Both chemical and electrochemical processes are included. The review can guide researchers to develop more efficient, economic, and environmentally friendly processes for dissolution of metals in their elemental state.

Supramolecular derivatives of chlorostannate(IV) and -plumbate(IV) with {Cl2} units, Cat2{[MCl6](Cl2)x} (1-5; M = Sn, Pb, cat = 1-methylpyridinium (1-MePy), tetramethylammonium (TMA)) were prepared and characterized by X-ray diffractometry and Raman spectroscopy. In particular, the TMA-containing complexes demonstrate remarkable thermal stability, releasing Cl2 only at elevated temperatures.

Abstract
The dissolution behavior of the precious metals gold, platinum, rhodium and palladium in the trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium trihalide ionic liquids [P66614][Cl3], [P66614][Br3], [P66614][IBr2] and [P66614][I3] was investigated. The highest dissolution rates were observed for the trichloride ionic liquid [P66614][Cl3] and this system was investigated in more detail. The effects of the trichloride concentration in the ionic liquid and temperature were studied, reaching higher leaching rates at higher trichloride conversions and increased temperatures. The stability of the trichloride anion at these elevated temperatures was studied by Raman spectroscopy. It was found that the trichloride anion decomposed during leaching at higher temperatures, showing the requirement to store these reactive compounds in sealed and cool environments, shielded from light. The optimal leaching conditions were applied for the recovery of palladium from ceramic monolith powder, obtained from end-of-life automotive catalysts. The catalyst powder was contacted with the ionic liquid [P66614][Cl3] and the metal concentrations in the ionic liquid were monitored. The trihalide ionic liquid allowed a more selective leaching of palladium compared to other metals present at very high concentrations in the monolith structure, like magnesium. The relative ratio of palladium over magnesium increased by two orders of magnitude compared to the original catalyst composition. The effect of the contact time between the catalyst powder and the ionic liquid on the metal concentrations in the leachate was investigated, but no significant improvement in the selectivity was observed.

Abstract
The mechanism of the noncatalytic bromination of carboranes was studied experimentally and theoretically. We found that the reactions of o- and m-carboranes 1 and 2 with elemental bromine are first order in the substrate but unusually high (approximately fifth) order in bromine. The calculated energy barriers of these reactions decrease sharply as more bromine molecules are added to the quantum-chemical system. A considerable primary deuterium kinetic isotope effect for the bromination of 2 indicates that the rate-limiting stage is B-H bond breakage. According to quantum-chemical reaction path calculations, the bond breakage proceeds after the intrusion of a bromine atom into the B-H σ-bond. The 9-Br and 9-OH substituents in carborane 1 strongly retard the bromination of the corresponding derivatives. The bromination mechanism of 9-OH-1 is complex and includes neutral, deprotonated, and protonated forms of the carborane. The high experimental kinetic reaction order in bromine, together with quantum chemical modeling, points to a specific mechanism of bromination facilitated by anionic bromine clusters which significantly stabilize the transition state.

Abstract
The lithium complexes [(WCA-NHC)Li(toluene)] of anionic N-heterocyclic carbenes with a weakly coordinating anionic borate moiety (WCA-NHC) reacted with iodine, bromine, or CCl4 to afford the zwitterionic 2-halogenoimidazolium borates (WCA-NHC)X (X=I, Br, Cl; WCA=B(C6 F5 )3 , B{3,5-C6 H3 (CF3 )2 }3 ; NHC=IDipp=1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene, or NHC=IMes=1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene). The iodine derivative (WCA-IDipp)I (WCA=B(C6 F5 )3 ) formed several complexes of the type (WCA-IDipp)I⋅L (L=C6 H5 Cl, C6 H5 Me, CH3 CN, THF, ONMe3 ), revealing its ability to act as an efficient halogen bond donor, which was also exploited for the preparation of hypervalent bis(carbene)iodine(I) complexes of the type [(WCA-IDipp)I(NHC)] and [PPh4 ][(WCA-IDipp)I(WCA-NHC)] (NHC=IDipp, IMes). The corresponding bromine complex [PPh4 ][(WCA-IDipp)2 Br] was isolated as a rare example of a hypervalent (10-Br-2) system. DFT calculations reveal that London dispersion contributes significantly to the stability of the bis(carbene)halogen(I) complexes, and the bonding was further analyzed by quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analysis.

Abstract
The ionic liquid (IL) trihalogen monoanions [N2221 ][X3 ]- and [N2221 ][XY2 ]- ([N2221 ]+ =triethylmethylammonium, X=Cl, Br, I, Y=Cl, Br) were investigated electrochemically via temperature dependent conductance and cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements. The polyhalogen monoanions were measured both as neat salts and as double salts in 1-butyl-1-methyl-pyrrolidinium trifluoromethane-sulfonate ([BMP][OTf], [X3 ]- /[XY2 ]- 0.5 M). Lighter IL trihalogen monoanions displayed higher conductivities than their heavier homologues, with [Cl3 ]- being 1.1 and 3.7 times greater than [Br3 ]- and [I3 ]- , respectively. The addition of [BMP][OTf] reduced the conductivity significantly. Within the group of polyhalogen monoanions, the oxidation potential develops in the series [Cl3 ]- >[BrCl2 ]- >[Br3 ]- >[IBr2 ]- >[ICl2 ]- >[I3 ]- . The redox potential of the interhalogen monoanions was found to be primarily determined by the central halogen, I in [ICl2 ]- and [IBr2 ]- , and Br in [BrCl2 ]- . Additionally, tetrafluorobromate(III) ([N2221 ]+ [BrF4 ]- ) was analyzed via CV in MeCN at 0 °C, yielding a single reversible redox process ([BrF2 ]- /[BrF4 ]- ).

Abstract
Unlike polyhalides of heavier halogens, polychlorides still remain exotic curiosities. Herein, we report preparation and investigation of complexes Cat2 {[TeCl6 ](Cl2 )} (cat=1-methylpyridinium (1) and tetramethylammonium (2)) where dichlorine units are "trapped" by chlorotellurate(IV) anions via a system of non-covalent Cl⋅⋅⋅Cl interactions. Complex 2 reveals a record thermal stability (>100 °C) for inclusion compounds with Cl2 , indications that such compounds can be used as solid Cl2 source.

Abstract
Reaction of CsF with ClF3 leads to Cs[Cl3 F10 ]. It contains a molecular, propeller-shaped [Cl3 F10 ]- anion with a central μ3 -F atom and three T-shaped ClF3 molecules coordinated to it. This anion represents the first example of a heteropolyhalide anion of higher ClF3 content than [ClF4 ]- and is the first Cl-containing interhalogen species with a μ-bridging F atom. The chemical bonds to the central μ3 -F atom are highly ionic and quite weak as the bond lengths within the coordinating XF3 units (X = Cl, and also calculated for Br, I) are almost unchanged in comparison to free XF3 molecules. Cs[Cl3 F10 ] crystallizes in a very rarely observed A[5] B[5] structure type, where cations and anions are each pseudohexagonally close packed, and reside, each with coordination number five, in the trigonal bipyramidal voids of the other.

Abstract
In the last part of our Essay, we outline a future of consilience, with a role both for fact-seekers, and for searchers for understanding. We begin by looking at theory and simulation, surrounded as they are by and interacting with experiment, especially in Chemistry. Experimenters ask questions both conceptual and numerical, and so draw the communities together. Two case studies show what brings the theoretician authors joy in this playground, and two more detailed ones make it clear that computation/simulation is anyway deeply intertwined with theory-building in what we do, or for that matter, anywhere in the profession. From a definition of science we try to foresee how simulation and theory will interact in the AI-dominated future. We posit that Chemistry's streak of creation provides in that conjoined future a link to Art, and a passage to a renewed vision of the sacred in science.

Abstract
Spectroscopic characterisations of the radical polyinterhalogen molecules IF2 and I2F are reported using anion photoelectron spectroscopy. The corresponding parent anions, IF2- and I2F-, are common products formed in hard Ar-CF3I plasmas and are relevant in the semiconductor manufacture industry. The I2F- species, which is present as the [I-I-F]- isomer, is a "non-classical" polyinterhalogen.

Abstract
Reactions of BiI3, I2, and iodide salts of two different pyridinum cations result in the formation of the novel iodine-rich iodobismuthates(III) (1,3-MePy)4{[Bi4I16](I2)} (1) and (1-MePy){[BiI4](I2)0.5) (2), where the halometalate anions are connected by diiodine linkers into one- or two-dimensional supramolecular structures. Both complexes reveal narrow optical band gaps and fairly high thermal stability, favoring their potential use in photovoltaic devices.

Abstract
A series of five ternary octanuclear iodine-bromine-chlorine interhalides, [I2 Br2 Cl4 ]2- (1), [I3 BrCl4 ]2- (2), [I4 Br2 Cl2 ]2- (3), [I2 Br4 Cl2 ]2- (4) and [I3 Br3 Cl2 ]2- (5), have been rationally constructed in two steps. Firstly, addition of a dihalogen (ICl or IBr) to the triaminocyclopropenium chloride salt [C3 (NEt2 )3 ]Cl forms the corresponding trihalide salt with [ICl2 ]- or [BrICl]- anions, respectively. Secondly, addition of a half-equivalent of a second dihalogen, followed by crystallization at low temperature, gives the corresponding octahalide: addition of Br2 and IBr to [ICl2 ]- gives 1 and 2, respectively, whereas addition of I2 , Br2 and IBr to [BrICl]- gives 3, 4 and 5, respectively. The five octahalides were characterized by X-ray crystallography and far-IR spectroscopy.

Abstract
A series of octanuclear iodine-bromine interhalides [In Br8-n ]2- (n=0, 2, 3, 4) were prepared systematically in two steps. Firstly, addition of a dihalogen (Br2 or IBr) to the triaminocyclopropenium bromide salt [C3 (NEt2 )3 ]Br forms the corresponding trihalide salt with Br3 - or IBr2 - anions, respectively. Secondly, addition to Br3 - of half an equivalent of Br2 gives the octabromine polyhalide [Br8 ]2- , whereas addition to IBr2 - of half an equivalent of Br2 , IBr or I2 gives the corresponding interhalides: [I2 Br6 ]2- , [I3 Br5 ]2- , and [I4 Br4 ]2- , respectively. The four octahalides were characterized by X-ray crystallography, computational studies, Raman and Far-IR spectroscopies, as well as by TGA and melting point. All of the salts were found to be ionic liquids.

Abstract
The octanuclear iodine-chlorine interhalides [I4 Cl4 ]2- and [I3 Cl5 ]2- were prepared in two steps. Firstly, addition of ICl to the triaminocyclopropenium chloride salt [C3 (NEt2 )3 ]Cl forms the trihalide ICl2 - salt, secondly, addition of half an equivalent of I2 or ICl, respectively, gave the desired products upon crystallization at low temperature. The non-stoichiometric octahalide [I3.6 Cl4.4 ]2- was obtained after heating a CH2 Cl2 solution of the ICl2 - salt to reflux for 2 hours followed crystallization. [I4 Cl4 ]2- is best described as two ICl2 - anions bridged by I2 , whereas [I3 Cl5 ]2- is best described as an [I2 Cl3 ]- pentahalide with a weak halogen bond to an ICl2 - trihalide. The octahalides were characterized by X-ray crystallography, computational studies, Raman and Far-IR spectroscopies, as well as by TGA and melting point.

Abstract
Pseudohalogens are defined as molecular entities that resemble the halogens in their chemistry. While our understanding of polyhalogen chemistry has increased over the last years, research on polypseudohalogen compounds is lacking. The pseudohalogen BrCN possesses a highly pronounced σ-hole at the bromine side of the molecule, inducing strong halogen bonding. This allows the synthesis and characterization of new polypseudohalogen anions, as shown by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction of [PNP][Br(BrCN)] and [PNP][Br(BrCN)3 ]. Both the nearly linear anion [Br(BrCN)]- and the distorted pyramidal anion [Br(BrCN)3 ]- were characterized by Raman spectroscopy and quantum-chemical calculations. The behavior of the polypseudohalogen compounds in solution and as room-temperature ionic liquids (RT-ILs) using the [NBu4 ]+ cation was studied by 13 C and 15 N NMR spectroscopy. These types of ILs are capable of dissolving elemental gold and offer themselves as promising compounds in metal recycling.
