Synthesis and photoluminescent spectroscopic analysis of lanthanum (III) coordinated with 1,10-Phenanthroline: A study of its thermally stable behavior

A blue-emitting phosphor designed by lanthanum (III) coordinated with two 1,10-Phenanthroline and three nitrate ligands, [La(Phen)2(NO3)3], was obtained by an effective and simple precipitation method. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) revealed the coordination modes in the compound and the chemical structure, crystallizing in a monoclinic system in the C2/c space group. The luminescence properties, absolute quantum yield (ϕ), and luminescence lifetime decay (τ) were determined by photoluminescence spectroscopy. Under a 350 nm excitation, the sample presents three emission bands corresponding to the π* → π transitions belonging to the organic ligand. The luminescence lifetime (τ) was determined through a monoexponentially fit, obtaining a value of 5616 ns. The [La(Phen)2(NO3)3] complex exhibits an absolute quantum yield of 3 % with the same excitation conditions. In addition, the photometric analysis shows that the luminescent response to a 350 nm excitation is that of a blue-emitting high-purity phosphor with 96 % and chromatic coordinates of 0.15, 0.05. The temperature-dependent luminescence properties revealed considerable thermal stability in the 20-150 °C range with a signal loss of 47 % and an activation energy of thermal quenching (ΔE) of 0.13 eV, the first value reported for a lanthanum complex based on 1,10-Phenanthroline.

Nanomaterial-based sensors for microbe detection: a review

Airborne microorganisms pose a significant health threat, causing various illnesses. Traditional detection methods are often slow and complex. This review highlights the potential of nanomaterial-based biosensors, particularly colorimetric sensors, for rapid and on-site detection of airborne microbes. Colorimetric sensors offer real-time visual detection without complex instrumentation. We explore the integration of these sensors with Lab-on-a-Chip technology using PDMS microfluidics. This review also proposes a novel PDMS-based colorimetric biosensor for real-time detection of airborne microbes. The sensor utilizes a color change phenomenon easily observable with the naked eye, simplifying analysis and potentially enabling point-of-care applications.

Thiolated Cyanines Appended to Partially Pegylated Gold Nanoparticles for Fluorescence Quenching of Two-Channel Photothermal Inks

Following a new approach, we prepared a nanoink with two separate photothermally responsive absorption bands. One is the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption of gold nanoparticles (AuNP, d=17 nm), the second is the absorption band of two cyanine (Cy) dyes, Cy7-C6 or Cy7-C11, grafted to the AuNP surface through thiolated bridges of different lengths: the close proximity to the Au surface induces full quenching of the Cy fluorescence, resulting in thermal relaxation on irradiation. Attempts to full coat AuNP with the lipophilic Cy7-C6 and Cy7-C11 lead to precipitation from aqueous solutions. We thus prepared AuNP with partial pegylation (30, 50, or 70 %), using a long chain thiol-terminated PEG bearing a -COOH function. Addition until saturation of either Cy7-C6 or Cy7-C11 to the partially pegylated AuNP gave the AuNP@Cy/PEGX% hybrids (X=30, 50, 70) that are stable in water and in the water/alcohol mixtures used to prepare the nanoinks. Further overcoating of AuNP@Cy7-C6/PEG50 % with PAH (polyallylamine hydrochloride) avoids LSPR hybridization in the dry nanoink printouts, that present two separate bands. When irradiated with laser sources near their absorption maxima, the printouts of the AuNP@Cy7-C6/PEG50 %@PAH nanoink respond on two channels, giving different temperature increases depending on the irradiation wavelengths. This enhances the potentiality of use of these nanoinks for photothermal anticounterfait printouts, making more difficult to reproduce the correct ΔT vs λirradiation output.

Temperature-sensitive metal-enhanced fluorescence and plasmon resonance energy transfer

Experimental decoupling of the effects of plasmon resonance energy transfer (PRET) and metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) within the same nanometal-fluorophore pair is fascinating but challenging. In this study, we presented a possible solution for this by coating plasmonic Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) with temperature-sensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM) shells and R6G hybrids, termed the Au@p-R nanoplatform, which could reversibly adjust the separation between dyes and the AuNP surface, enabling an ON/OFF switch between MEF and PRET. In our optimization process, we discovered that 20 kDa of pNIPAM causes an MEF effect owing to an appropriate shrinking distance of 6.86 ± 0.85 nm. This dual-model nanoplatform exhibits great potential for tracking temperature-dependent transitions.

Single-sample image-fusion upsampling of fluorescence lifetime images

Fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) provides detailed information about molecular interactions and biological processes. A major bottleneck for FLIM is image resolution at high acquisition speeds due to the engineering and signal-processing limitations of time-resolved imaging technology. Here, we present single-sample image-fusion upsampling, a data-fusion approach to computational FLIM super-resolution that combines measurements from a low-resolution time-resolved detector (that measures photon arrival time) and a high-resolution camera (that measures intensity only). To solve this otherwise ill-posed inverse retrieval problem, we introduce statistically informed priors that encode local and global correlations between the two "single-sample" measurements. This bypasses the risk of out-of-distribution hallucination as in traditional data-driven approaches and delivers enhanced images compared, for example, to standard bilinear interpolation. The general approach laid out by single-sample image-fusion upsampling can be applied to other image super-resolution problems where two different datasets are available.

Enhancing Phototoxicity in Human Colorectal Tumor Cells Through Nanoarchitectonics for Synergistic Photothermal and Photodynamic Therapies

Phototherapies are promising for noninvasive treatment of aggressive tumors, especially when combining heat induction and oxidative processes. Herein, we show enhanced phototoxicity of gold shell-isolated nanorods conjugated with toluidine blue-O (AuSHINRs@TBO) against human colorectal tumor cells (Caco-2) with synergic effects of photothermal (PTT) and photodynamic therapies (PDT). Mitochondrial metabolic activity tests (MTT) performed on Caco-2 cell cultures indicated a photothermal effect from AuSHINRs owing to enhanced light absorption from the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). The phototoxicity against Caco-2 cells was further increased with AuSHINRs@TBO where oxidative processes, such as hydroperoxidation, were also present, leading to a cell viability reduction from 85.5 to 39.0%. The molecular-level mechanisms responsible for these effects were investigated on bioinspired tumor membranes using Langmuir monolayers of Caco-2 lipid extract. Polarization-modulation infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS) revealed that the AuSHINRs@TBO incorporation is due to attractive electrostatic interactions with negatively charged groups of the Caco-2 lipid extract, resulting in the expansion of surface pressure isotherms. Upon irradiation, Caco-2 lipid extract monolayers containing AuSHINRs@TBO (1:1 v/v) exhibited ca. 1.0% increase in surface area. This is attributed to the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and their interaction with Caco-2 lipid extract monolayers, leading to hydroperoxide formation. The oxidative effects are facilitated by AuSHINRs@TBO penetration into the polar groups of the extract, allowing oxidative reactions with carbon chain unsaturations. These mechanisms are consistent with findings from confocal fluorescence microscopy, where the Caco-2 plasma membrane was the primary site of the cell death induction process.

Fluorophore Interactions with the Surface Modes and Internal Modes of a Photonic Crystal

The metal-ligand complex tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) chloride (Ru probe) displays a broad emission spectrum ranging from 540 to 730 nm. The emission spectra of Ru probe were measured when placed on top of a one-dimensional photonic crystal (1DPC), which supports both Bloch surface wave (BSW) and internal modes for wavelengths below 640 nm and only internal modes above 640 nm. The S-polarized emission spectra, with the electric vector parallel to the 1DPC surface, were found to be strongly dependent on the observation angle through the coupling prism. Also, the usual single broad-emission spectrum of Ru probe on glass was converted into two or more narrow-band-spectrum on the 1DPC, with emission band maxima dependent on the observation angle. The two S-polarized emission band peaks for Ru probe were found to be consistent with coupling to the BSW and first internal mode (IM1) of the 1DPC. The same spectral shifts and changes in emission maxima were observed by using Kretschmann and reverse Kretschmann illuminations. As the coupling requires the emitter to be in proximity with the photonic structure, we calculated near- and far-field distributions of a dipole directly located on the 1DPC surface. Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) simulations were performed to confirm fluorophore coupling to the BSW and internal modes (IMs). Both the measured and simulated results showed that IM coupled emission is significant. Coupling to the IM mode occurred at longer wavelengths where the 1DPC did not support a BSW. These results demonstrate that a simple Bragg grating, without a BSW mode, can be used for detection of surface-bound fluorophores.

Uncovering the Mechanisms of Triplet-Triplet Annihilation Upconversion Enhancement via Plasmonic Nanocavity Tuning

The nonlinear conversion of photons from lower to higher energy is important for a wide range of applications, from quantum communications and optoelectronics to solar energy conversion and medicine. Triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA UC), which utilizes an absorber/emitter molecular pair, is a promising tool for upconversion applications requiring low intensity light such as photovoltaics, photocatalysis, and bioimaging. Despite demonstrations of efficient TTA UC in solution, practical applications have proven difficult, as thin films retard the necessary energy transfer steps and result in low emission yields. In this work, TTA UC emission from a thin film is greatly enhanced through integration into plasmonic nanogap cavities consisting of a silver mirror, a nanometer-scale polymer spacer containing a TTA molecular pair, and colloidally synthesized silver nanocubes. Mechanistic studies performed by varying the nanocube side length (45-150 nm) to tune the nanogap cavity resonance paired with simulations reveal absorption rate enhancement to be the primary operative mechanism in overall TTA UC emission enhancement. This absorption enhancement decreases the TTA UC threshold intensity by an order of magnitude and allows TTA UC emission to be excited with light up to 120 nm redder than the usable wavelength range for the control samples. Further, combined nanogap cavities composed of two distinct nanocube sizes result in surfaces which simultaneously enhance the absorption rate and emission rate. These dual-size nanogap cavities result in 45-fold TTA UC emission enhancement. In total, these studies present TTA UC emission enhancement, illustrate how the usable portion of the spectrum can be expanded for a given sensitizer-emitter pair, and develop both mechanistic understanding and design rules for TTA UC emission enhancement by plasmonic nanostructures.

Plasmonic Fluorescence Enhancement in Diagnostics for Clinical Tests at Point-of-Care: A Review of Recent Technologies

Fluorescence-based biosensors have widely been used in the life-sciences and biomedical applications due to their low limit of detection and a diverse selection of fluorophores that enable simultaneous measurements of multiple biomarkers. Recent research effort has been made to implement fluorescent biosensors into the exploding field of point-of-care testing (POCT), which uses cost-effective strategies for rapid and affordable diagnostic testing. However, fluorescence-based assays often suffer from their feeble signal at low analyte concentrations, which often requires sophisticated, costly, and bulky instrumentation to maintain high detection sensitivity. Metal- and metal oxide-based nanostructures offer a simple solution to increase the output signal from fluorescent biosensors due to the generation of high field enhancements close to a metal or metal oxide surface, which has been shown to improve the excitation rate, quantum yield, photostability, and radiation pattern of fluorophores. This article provides an overview of existing biosensors that employ various strategies for fluorescence enhancement via nanostructures and have demonstrated the potential for use as POCT. Biosensors using nanostructures such as planar substrates, freestanding nanoparticles, and metal-dielectric-metal nanocavities are discussed with an emphasis placed on technologies that have shown promise towards POCT applications without the need for centralized laboratories.

Plasmon enhanced fluorescence from meticulously positioned gold nanoparticles, deposited by ultra sonic spray coating on organic light emitting diodes

Enhancement of the spontaneous emission of fluorophores aided by plasmonic nanoparticles (PNPs) prompts the growth of plasmonic organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). Together with the spatial dependence of the fluorophore and PNPs on enhanced fluorescence, the surface coverage of the PNPs controls the charge transport in OLEDs. Hence, here, the spatial and surface coverage reliance of plasmonic gold nanoparticles is controlled by a roll-to-roll compatible ultrasonic spray coating technique. A 2-fold enhancement in the multi photon fluorescence is seen by two-photon fluorescence microscopy for a polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) stabilized gold nanoparticle located 10 nm away from the super yellow fluorophore. Fluorescence enhancement combined with ∼2% surface coverage of PNPs, provides a 33%, 20% and ∼40% increase in the electroluminescence, luminous efficacy and external quantum efficiency, respectively.

Wavelength-Dependent Metal-Enhanced Fluorescence Biosensors via Resonance Energy Transfer Modulation

Fluorescence can be enhanced or quenched depending on the distance between the surface of a metal nanoparticle and the fluorophore molecule. Fluorescence enhancement by nearby metal particles is called metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF). MEF shows promising potential in the field of fluorescence-based biological sensing. MEF-based biosensor systems generally fall into two platform categories: (1) a two/three-dimensional scaffold, or (2) a colloidal suspension. This review briefly summarizes the application studies using wavelength-dependent carbon dots (UV-VIS), noble metals (VIS), and upconversion nanoparticles (NIR to VIS), representative nanomaterials that contribute to the enhancement of fluorescence through the resonance energy transfer modulation and then presents a perspective on this topic.

Recent advances in plasmon-enhanced luminescence for biosensing and bioimaging

Plasmon-enhanced luminescence (PEL) is a unique photophysical phenomenon in which the interaction between luminescent moieties and metal nanostructures results in a marked luminescence enhancement. PEL offers several advantages and has been extensively used to design robust biosensing platforms for luminescence-based detection and diagnostics applications, as well as for the development of many efficient bioimaging platforms, enabling high-contrast non-invasive real-time optical imaging of biological tissues, cells, and organelles with high spatial and temporal resolution. This review summarizes recent progress in the development of various PEL-based biosensors and bioimaging platforms for diverse biological and biomedical applications. Specifically, we comprehensively assessed rationally designed PEL-based biosensors that can efficiently detect biomarkers (proteins and nucleic acids) in point-of-care tests, highlighting significant improvements in the sensing performance upon the integration of PEL. In addition to discussing the merits and demerits of recently developed PEL-based biosensors on substrates or in solutions, we include a brief discussion on integrating PEL-based biosensing platforms into microfluidic devices as a promising multi-responsive detection method. The review also presents comprehensive details about the recent advances in the development of various PEL-based multi-functional (passive targeting, active targeting, and stimuli-responsive) bioimaging probes, highlighting the scope of future improvements in devising robust PEL-based nanosystems to achieve more effective diagnostic and therapeutic insights by enabling imaging-guided therapy.

Biosensing Technologies: A Focus Review on Recent Advancements in Surface Plasmon Coupled Emission

In the past decade, novel nano-engineering protocols have been actively synergized with fluorescence spectroscopic techniques to yield higher intensity from radiating dipoles, through the process termed plasmon-enhanced fluorescence (PEF). Consequently, the limit of detection of analytes of interest has been dramatically improvised on account of higher sensitivity rendered by augmented fluorescence signals. Recently, metallic thin films sustaining surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) have been creatively hybridized with such PEF platforms to realize a substantial upsurge in the global collection efficiency in a judicious technology termed surface plasmon-coupled emission (SPCE). While the process parameters and conditions to realize optimum coupling efficiency between the radiating dipoles and the plasmon polaritons in SPCE framework have been extensively discussed, the utility of disruptive nano-engineering over the SPCE platform and analogous interfaces such as 'ferroplasmon-on-mirror (FPoM)' as well as an alternative technology termed 'photonic crystal-coupled emission (PCCE)' have been seldom reviewed. In light of these observations, in this focus review, the myriad nano-engineering protocols developed over the SPCE, FPoM and PCCE platform are succinctly captured, presenting an emphasis on the recently developed cryosoret nano-assembly technology for photo-plasmonic hotspot generation (first to fourth). These technologies and associated sensing platforms are expected to ameliorate the current biosensing modalities with better understanding of the biophysicochemical processes and related outcomes at advanced micro-nano-interfaces. This review is hence envisaged to present a broad overview of the latest developments in SPCE substrate design and development for interdisciplinary applications that are of relevance in environmental as well as biological heath monitoring.

Controllable Preparation of Ag-SiO2 Composite Nanoparticles and Their Applications in Fluorescence Enhancement

Metal nanoparticles have attracted a great deal of interest due to their unique properties of surface plasmon resonance. Metal nanoparticles can enhance the fluorescence emission intensity of quantum dots (QDs) through the local surface plasmon resonance effect, which is mainly determined by the distance between them. Therefore, it is very important to achieve controllable distance between metal and QDs, and study fluorescence enhancement. In this work, the controllable adjustment of the distance between metal nanoparticles and QDs was successfully realized by controlling the thickness of the SiO₂ shell of Ag@SiO₂ nanoparticles. Firstly, Ag nanoparticles with uniform size distribution and relatively high concentration were prepared, and then the thickness of the SiO₂ shell was controlled by controlling the amount of tetra-ethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) in the hydrolysis of TEOS reaction. (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APS) was used to connect CdS/ZnS QDs with Ag@SiO₂ nanoparticles to form Ag@SiO₂@CdS/ZnS QD composite nanoparticles. The fluorescence spectra shows that the fluorescence intensity of the Ag@SiO₂@CdS/ZnS QD composite nanoparticles is significantly enhanced. Photoexcitation spectra and fluorescence spectra of CdS/ZnS QD and Ag@SiO₂@CdS/ZnS QD composite nanoparticles, measured under different energy excitation conditions, indicate that the existence of Ag nanoparticles can enhance the fluorescence intensity of CdS/ZnS QDs. Finally, a further physical mechanism of fluorescence enhancement is revealed.

Plasmonic Modes and Fluorescence Enhancement Coupling Mechanism: A Case with a Nanostructured Grating

The recent development and technological improvement in dealing with plasmonic metasurfaces has triggered a series of interesting applications related to sensing challenges. Fluorescence has been one of the most studied tools within such a context. With this in mind, we used some well characterized structures supporting plasmonic resonances to study their influence on the emission efficiency of a fluorophore. An extended optical analysis and a complementary investigation through finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations have been combined to understand the coupling mechanism between the excitation of plasmonic modes and the fluorescence absorption and emission processes. The results provide evidence of the spectral shape dependence of fluorescence on the plasmonic field distribution together with a further relationship connected with the enhancement of its signal. It has made evident that the spectral region characterized by the largest relative enhancement closely corresponds to the strongest signatures of the plasmonic modes, as described by both the optical measurements and the FDTD findings.

Photon density of states effect on Lamb shift in plasmas

A possible effect of the low photon density of states in plasma on the Lamb shift is analysed. It is found that because of a significant contribution of high-energy virtual photons to the Lamb shift, its modification in plasma does not exceed 1 % with respect to vacuum even at electron concentrations as high as 1022 cm–3. This behavior results from an asymptotic tendency of plasma properties to vacuum ones at an unlimited frequency growth.

5-N-Arylaminothiazoles with pyridyl groups and their first-row transition metal complexes: synthesis, photophysical properties, and Zn sensing

A series of 5-N-arylaminothiazoles were synthesized with facile diversity-oriented synthesis from readily available starting materials via the reaction of thioamide dianions and thioformamides. The introduction of various substituents at the 2-position of a thiazole ring (i.e., 2-pyridyl, 4-methylpyridyl, and phenyl groups) and on the nitrogen atom (i.e., p-tolyl and phenyl groups) significantly influenced the absorption and emission spectra of the isolated compounds. X-ray analysis confirmed that the substituents at the amino site were twisted from a thiazole ring, while the formation of its nickel complex showed dinuclear metal complexes bridged with chlorine atoms. Moreover, the formation of zinc-thiazole complexes showed enhanced emission properties in solution and noticeable emission in a solid state. In addition, thiazole-bridged dypyrromethene type ligands showed high selectivity toward Zn+2, which make them good candidates for zinc sensing.

Spectral Dependence of the Energy Transfer from Photosynthetic Complexes to Monolayer Graphene

Fluorescence excitation spectroscopy at cryogenic temperatures carried out on hybrid assemblies composed of photosynthetic complexes deposited on a monolayer graphene revealed that the efficiency of energy transfer to graphene strongly depended on the excitation wavelength. The efficiency of this energy transfer was greatly enhanced in the blue-green spectral region. We observed clear resonance-like behavior for both a simple light-harvesting antenna containing only two chlorophyll molecules (PCP) and a large photochemically active reaction center associated with the light-harvesting antenna (PSI-LHCI), which pointed towards the general character of this effect.

Dual photonic bandgap hollow sphere colloidal photonic crystals for real-time fluorescence enhancement in living cells

To overcome the problems of refractive index matching and increased disorder when working with traditional heterostructure colloidal photonic crystals (CPCs) with dual or multiple photonic bandgaps (PBGs) for fluorescence enhancement in water, we propose the use of a chemical heterostructure in hollow sphere CPCs (HSCPCs). A partial chemical modification of the HSCPC creates a large contrast in wettability to induce the heterostructure, while the hollow spheres increase the refractive index difference when used in aqueous environment. With the platform, fluorescence enhancement reaches around 160 times in solution, and 72 times (signal-to-background ratio ~7 times) in cells during proof-of-concept live cardiomyocyte contractility experiments. Such photonic platform can be further exploited for chemical sensing, bioassays, and environmental monitoring. Moreover, the introduction of chemical heterostructures provides new design principles for functionalized photonic devices.

Nanogold-based materials in medicine: from their origins to their future

The properties of gold-based materials have been explored for centuries in several research fields, including medicine. Multiple published production methods for gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have shown that the physicochemical and optical properties of AuNPs depend on the production method used. These different AuNP properties have allowed exploration of their usefulness in countless distinct biomedical applications over the last few years. Here we present an extensive overview of the most commonly used AuNP production methods, the resulting distinct properties of the AuNPs and the potential application of these AuNPs in diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in biomedicine.

Utility of Silver-nanoparticles for Nano Spectrofluorimetric Determination of Meropenem and Ertapenem: Bio-analytical Validation

Bio-analytical, nano-quantitative spectrofluorimetric estimation of two non-classical β-lactam antibiotics; meropenem (MP) and ertapenem (EP) is presented. The method is based on the enhancement of the fluorescence intensity of MP-Eu³⁺/EP-Eu³⁺ with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). AgNPs were synthesized and characterized by UV and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The plasmon resonance produced an intense absorption maximum at 398.0 nm. TEM micrograph showed the particle morphology with an average particles size of 13.0 ± 2.95 nm. The fluorescence intensities were measured against blank reagents at λem of 396.0 nm and 405.0 nm after excitation at λex 305.0 nm and 303.0 nm for MP and EP, respectively. Under optimum conditions, the relative fluorescence intensity showed a good linear relationship with the concentration ranges of 4.0-14.0 and 4.0 -12.0 ng/mL with excellent correlation coefficients of 0.9998 and 0.9997, and limit of detection of 0.84 and 0.86 ng/mL for MP and EP, respectively. The method was successfully applied for direct analysis of MP and EP in their drug substances and pharmaceutical vials. The significant, sensitivity and practicality of the method facilitated MP detection in real plasma samples. Bio-analytical validation was performed according to FDA. The method was rectilinear over the ranges of, 5.0 -75.0 μg/mL plasma. Interestingly, this described system has a promising benefit for various applications exploiting the dramatically enhanced-fluorescence occurrence.

Role of Femtosecond Pulsed Laser-Induced Atomic Redistribution in Bimetallic Au-Pd Nanorods on Optoelectronic and Catalytic Properties

Utilizing solar energy for chemical transformations has attracted a growing interest in promoting the clean and modular chemical synthesis approach and addressing the limitations of conventional thermocatalytic systems. Under light irradiation, noble metal nanoparticles, particularly those characterized by localized surface plasmon resonance, commonly known as plasmonic nanoparticles, generate a strong electromagnetic field, excited hot carriers, and photothermal heating. Plasmonic nanoparticles enabling efficient absorption of light in the visible range have moderate catalytic activities. However, the catalytic performance of a plasmonic nanoparticle can be significantly enhanced by incorporating a highly catalytically active metal domain onto its surface. In this study, we demonstrate that femtosecond laser-induced atomic redistribution of metal domains in bimetallic Au-Pd nanorods (NRs) can enhance its photocurrent response by 2-fold compared to parent Au-Pd NRs. We induce structure changes on Au-Pd NRs by irradiating them with a femtosecond pulsed laser at 808 nm to precisely redistribute Pd atoms on AuNR surfaces, resulting in modified electronic and optical properties and, thereby, enhanced catalytic activity. We also investigate the trade-off between the effect of light absorption and catalytic activity by optimizing the structure and composition of bimetallic Au-Pd nanoparticles. This work provides insight into the design of hybrid plasmonic-catalytic nanostructures with well-tailored geometry, composition, and structure for solar-fuel-based applications.

Optimizing Calcium Detection Methods in Animal Systems: A Sandbox for Synthetic Biology

Since the 1970s, the emergence and expansion of novel methods for calcium ion (Ca2+) detection have found diverse applications in vitro and in vivo across a series of model animal systems. Matched with advances in fluorescence imaging techniques, the improvements in the functional range and stability of various calcium indicators have significantly enhanced more accurate study of intracellular Ca2+ dynamics and its effects on cell signaling, growth, differentiation, and regulation. Nonetheless, the current limitations broadly presented by organic calcium dyes, genetically encoded calcium indicators, and calcium-responsive nanoparticles suggest a potential path toward more rapid optimization by taking advantage of a synthetic biology approach. This engineering-oriented discipline applies principles of modularity and standardization to redesign and interrogate endogenous biological systems. This review will elucidate how novel synthetic biology technologies constructed for eukaryotic systems can offer a promising toolkit for interfacing with calcium signaling and overcoming barriers in order to accelerate the process of Ca2+ detection optimization.

Dansyl-Labelled Ag@SiO2 Core-Shell Nanostructures-Synthesis, Characterization, and Metal-Enhanced Fluorescence

The present work describes synthesis, characterization, and use of a new dansyl-labelled Ag@SiO2 nanocomposite as an element of a new plasmonic platform to enhance the fluorescence intensity. Keeping in mind that typical surface plasmon resonance (SPR) characteristics of silver nanoparticles coincide well enough with the absorption of dansyl molecules, we used them to build the core of the nanocomposite. Moreover, we utilized 10 nm amino-functionalized silica shell as a separator between silver nanoparticles and the dansyl dye to prevent the dye-to-metal energy transfer. The dansyl group was incorporated into Ag@SiO2 core-shell nanostructures by the reaction of aminopropyltrimethoxysilane with dansyl chloride and we characterized the new dansyl-labelled Ag@SiO2 nanocomposite using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Additionally, water wettability measurements (WWM) were carried out to assess the hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity of the studied surface. We found that the nanocomposite deposited on a semitransparent silver mirror strongly increased the fluorescence intensity of dansyl dye (about 87-fold) compared with the control sample on the glass, proving that the system is a perfect candidate for a sensitive plasmonic platform.

Investigation of plasmon-induced extraction efficiency enhancement in a CdTe-based LED using FDTD simulation

Light-emitting diodes (LED) based on silicon platforms and CdTe quantum dots (QDs) are an important area of research. Due to poor charge balance in QD layers, reduced graphene oxide (RGO) was introduced between the P-Si substrate and CdTe QDs. To further improve the performance of the QDs-LED, Au nanorods (NRs) were incorporated into the hole transport layer. A finite-difference time-domain simulation was used to discuss theoretically the influence of RGO and Au NRs on the LED performance, and investigate the influence of substrate on the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) coupling wavelength. Simulated results demonstrated that the LSPR peaks for Au NRs red shifted with increase in substrate refractive index, and the electric field along the x-y plane was mostly concentrated near the interface. RGO incorporation enhanced the emission of the QDs-LED. This may be attributed to improvement in conductivity and hole mobility in the hole transport layer and reduction in the energy barrier for injection of holes. After introduction of Au NRs, there was a significant enhancement in emission, and light extraction efficiency was enhanced about 10-fold.

Review: Applications of surface-enhanced fluorescence (SEF) spectroscopy in bio-detection and biosensing

Surface-enhanced fluorescence (SEF) is rapidly becoming one of the main spectroscopic techniques for the detection of a variety of biomolecules and biomarkers. The main reasons for this trend are the high sensitivity and selectivity, robustness, and speed of this analytical method. Each year, the number of applications that utilize this phenomenon increases and with each such work, the complexity and novelty of the used substrates, procedures, and analytes rises. To obtain a clearer view of this phenomenon and research area, we decided to combine 76 valuable research articles from a variety of different research groups into this mini-review. We present and describe these works concisely and clearly, with a particular interest in the quantitative parameters of the experiment. These sources are classified according to the nature of the analyte, on the contrary to most reviews, which sort them by substrate nature. This point of view gives us insight into the development of this research area and the consequent increase in the complexity of the analyte nature. Moreover, this type of sorting can show possible future routes for the expansion of this research area. Along with the analytes, we can also pay attention to the substrates used for each situation and how the development of substrates affects the direction of research and subsequently, the choice of an analyte. About 108 sources and several interesting trends in the SEF research area over the past 25 years are discussed in this mini-review.

Real-time fluorescence sensing of single photoactive proteins using silver nanowires

We demonstrate that single functionalized silver nanowires form a geometric platform suitable for efficient real-time detection of single photoactive proteins. By collecting series of images using wide-field fluorescence microscopy, events of single protein attachment can be distinguished with the signal to noise ratio further improved by fluorescence enhancement due to plasmon excitations in the nanowires. The enhancement is evidenced by strong shortening of the fluorescence decay of single photoactive proteins conjugated to the silver nanowires.

Circularly Polarized Luminescence in Nanoassemblies: Generation, Amplification, and Application

Currently, the development of circularly polarized luminescent (CPL) materials has drawn extensive attention due to the numerous potential applications in optical data storage, displays, backlights in 3D displays, and so on. While the fabrication of CPL-active materials generally requires chiral luminescent molecules, the introduction of the "self-assembly" concept offers a new perspective in obtaining the CPL-active materials. Following this approach, various self-assembled materials, including organic-, inorganic-, and hybrid systems can be endowed with CPL properties. Benefiting from the advantages of self-assembly, not only chiral molecules, but also achiral species, as well as inorganic nanoparticles have potential to be self-assembled into chiral nanoassemblies showing CPL activity. In addition, the dissymmetry factor, an important parameter of CPL materials, can be enhanced through various pathways of self-assembly. Here, the present status and progress of self-assembled nanomaterials with CPL activity are reviewed. An overview of the key factors in regulating chiral emission materials at the supramolecular level will largely boost their application in multidisciplinary fields.

Supramolecular Porous Organic Nanocomposites for Heterogeneous Photocatalysis of a Sulfur Mustard Simulant

Efficient heterogeneous photosensitizing materials require both large accessible surface areas and excitons of suitable energies and with well-defined spin structures. Confinement of the tetracationic cyclophane (ExBox⁴⁺ ) within a nonporous anionic polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) matrix leads to a surface area increase of up to 225 m² g^-1 in ExBox•PSS. Efficient intersystem crossing is achieved by combining the spin-orbit coupling associated to Br heavy atoms in 1,3,5,8-tetrabromopyrene (TBP), and the photoinduced electron transfer in a TBP⊂ExBox⁴⁺ supramolecular dyad. The TBP⊂ExBox⁴⁺ complex displays a charge transfer band at 450 nm and an exciplex emission at 520 nm, indicating the formation of new mixed-electronic states. The lowest triplet state (T₁ , 1.89 eV) is localized on the TBP and is close in energy with the charge separated state (CT, 2.14 eV). The homogeneous and heterogeneous photocatalytic activities of the TBP⊂ExBox⁴⁺ , for the elimination of a sulfur mustard simulant, has proved to be significantly more efficient than TBP and ExBox⁺⁴ , confirming the importance of the newly formed excited-state manifold in TBP⊂ExBox⁴⁺ for the population of the low-lying T₁ state. The high stability, facile preparation, and high performance of the TBP⊂ExBox•PSS nanocomposites augur well for the future development of new supramolecular heterogeneous photosensitizers using host-guest chemistry.

Two-Dimensional Van der Waals Heterostructures for Synergistically Improved Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a precise and noninvasive analytical technique that is widely used in chemical analysis, environmental protection, food processing, pharmaceutics, and diagnostic biology. However, it is still a challenge to produce highly sensitive and reusable SERS substrates with a minimum fluorescence background. In this work, we propose the use of van der Waals heterostructures of two-dimensional materials to cover plasmonic metal nanoparticles to solve this challenge. The heterostructures of atomically thin boron nitride (BN) and graphene provide synergistic effects: (1) electrons could tunnel through the atomically thin BN, allowing the charge transfer between graphene and probe molecules to suppress the fluorescence background; (2) the SERS sensitivity is enhanced by graphene via a chemical enhancement mechanism in addition to an electromagnetic field mechanism; and (3) the atomically thin BN protects the underlying graphene and Ag nanoparticles from oxidation during heating for regeneration at 360 °C in the air so that the SERS substrates could be reused. These advances will facilitate wider applications of SERS especially on the detection of fluorescent molecules with higher sensitivity.

Magnetron-sputtered Polytetrafluoroethylene-stabilized Silver Nanoisland Surface for Surface-Enhanced Fluorescence

Surface-enhanced fluorescence (SEF) requires the absorption/emission band of the fluorophore, the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of the nanostructure and the excitation wavelength to fall in the same (or very close) spectral range. In this paper, we monitor the SEF intensity and lifetime dependence of riboflavin (vitamin B2) adsorbed on a spacer-modified Ag substrate with respect to the thickness of the spacer. The substrates were formed by silver nanoislands deposited onto magnetron-sputtered polytetrafluoroethylene (ms-PTFE). The spacer was formed by the ms-PTFE layer with the thickness ranging from ~5 to 25 nm. The riboflavin dissolved in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) at a 10 µM concentration forms, at the ms-PTFE surface, a homogeneous layer of adsorbed molecules corresponding to a monomolecular layer. The microspectroscopic measurements of the adsorbed layer were performed through a sessile droplet; our study has shown the advantages and limitations of this approach. Time-resolved fluorescence enabled us to determine the enhanced fluorescence quantum yield due to the shortening of the radiative decay in the vicinity of the plasmonic surface. For the 5 nm ms-PTFE layer possessing the largest (estimated 4×) fluorescence enhancement, the quantum yield was increased 2.3×.

Silver Island Film for Enhancing Light Harvesting in Natural Photosynthetic Proteins

The effects of combining naturally evolved photosynthetic pigment–protein complexes with inorganic functional materials, especially plasmonically active metallic nanostructures, have been a widely studied topic in the last few decades. Besides other applications, it seems to be reasonable using such hybrid systems for designing future biomimetic solar cells. In this paper, we describe selected results that point out to various aspects of the interactions between photosynthetic complexes and plasmonic excitations in Silver Island Films (SIFs). In addition to simple light-harvesting complexes, like peridinin-chlorophyll-protein (PCP) or the Fenna–Matthews–Olson (FMO) complex, we also discuss the properties of large, photosynthetic reaction centers (RCs) and Photosystem I (PSI)—both prokaryotic PSI core complexes and eukaryotic PSI supercomplexes with attached antenna clusters (PSI-LHCI)—deposited on SIF substrates.

Fine-tunable fluorescence quenching properties of core-satellite assemblies of gold nanorod-nanosphere: Application in sensitive detection of Hg2

In this work, we developed a simple, effective fluorescence method to detect Hg²⁺ by inhibiting core-satellite assemblies of gold nanorods (AuNRs) and gold nanospheres (AuNPs). The fluorescence of Rhodamine 6G (Rh6G), which was simply mixed with the nanoassemblies, was efficiently quenched by the inner filter effect (IFE). When the heterogenous core-satellite nanostructures were assembled, the corresponding local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption shifts and broadens which results in the increase of the spectral overlap between the emission peak and the absorption band and more efficient energy transfer from Rh6G to nanoparticles. Fluorescence quenching efficiency is related to the size and number density of satellite nanoparticles. It is interesting that the AuNR-AuNP assemblies with the moderate size and high density of AuNPs have the best fluorescence quenching efficiency. In the presence of Hg²⁺, p-aminothiophenol (p-ATP) breaks away from the surface of AuNRs and competitively bounds to Hg²⁺, resulting in a low yield of the AuNR-AuNP assemblies, which further leads to the decrease of fluorescence quenching efficiency. Under the optimum conditions, the limit of detection (LOD) for Hg²⁺ was 0.18 nM, with an excellent linear response from 0.6 to 800 nM. Interference experiment and real samples detection indicate that these nanosensors endowed with higher sensitivity and selectivity for the detection of Hg²⁺ in the real samples. Compared with the conventional Hg²⁺ detection techniques, this method based on Hg²⁺ induced inhibition of core-satellite AuNR-AuNP assemblies has better performance and is suitable for the detection of Hg²⁺.

Rapid detection of urokinase plasminogen activator using flexible paper-based graphene-gold platform

Many studies have shown that urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA) is causally involved in promoting cancer invasion and metastasis. Thus, monitoring uPA levels could be very useful in cancer diagnosis, identification of initial metastasis, and guiding cancer treatment. Here, the authors developed a novel and scalable uPA sensor based on a graphene-gold nanoparticle platform that uses fluorescence of quantum dots to rapidly (<1 h) detect uPA up to 100 pM. Indeed, the authors' sensor is highly selective and showed an ability to sense up to 100 pM uPA even in the presence of complex biological milieu such as the fetal bovine serum.

Multicomponent Plasmonic Nanoparticles: From Heterostructured Nanoparticles to Colloidal Composite Nanostructures

Plasmonic nanostructures possessing unique and versatile optoelectronic properties have been vastly investigated over the past decade. However, the full potential of plasmonic nanostructure has not yet been fully exploited, particularly with single-component homogeneous structures with monotonic properties, and the addition of new components for making multicomponent nanoparticles may lead to new-yet-unexpected or improved properties. Here we define the term "multi-component nanoparticles" as hybrid structures composed of two or more condensed nanoscale domains with distinctive material compositions, shapes, or sizes. We reviewed and discussed the designing principles and synthetic strategies to efficiently combine multiple components to form hybrid nanoparticles with a new or improved plasmonic functionality. In particular, it has been quite challenging to precisely synthesize widely diverse multicomponent plasmonic structures, limiting realization of the full potential of plasmonic heterostructures. To address this challenge, several synthetic approaches have been reported to form a variety of different multicomponent plasmonic nanoparticles, mainly based on heterogeneous nucleation, atomic replacements, adsorption on supports, and biomolecule-mediated assemblies. In addition, the unique and synergistic features of multicomponent plasmonic nanoparticles, such as combination of pristine material properties, finely tuned plasmon resonance and coupling, enhanced light-matter interactions, geometry-induced polarization, and plasmon-induced energy and charge transfer across the heterointerface, were reported. In this review, we comprehensively summarize the latest advances on state-of-art synthetic strategies, unique properties, and promising applications of multicomponent plasmonic nanoparticles. These plasmonic nanoparticles including heterostructured nanoparticles and composite nanostructures are prepared by direct synthesis and physical force- or biomolecule-mediated assembly, which hold tremendous potential for plasmon-mediated energy transfer, magnetic plasmonics, metamolecules, and nanobiotechnology.

Plasmonic Silver Nanoprism-Induced Emissive Mode Control between Fluorescence and Phosphorescence of a Phosphorescent Palladium Porphyrin Derivative

We have succeeded in significantly enhancing fluorescence from intrinsically phosphorescent palladium octaethylporphyrin (Pd-porphyrin) that has an intersystem crossing efficiency of ∼1 by using silver nanoprisms (AgPRs). This was achieved by controlling the wavelength of the localized surface plasmon (LSP) resonance of AgPRs and the distance between the Pd-porphyrin molecules and the AgPR surfaces. In addition to enhancing phosphorescence by spectrally overlapping the phosphorescence band with the LSP resonance band, tuning the LSP wavelength to approximately 520 nm led to the appearance of a new emission band around the wavelength corresponding to the fluorescent radiation. The appearance of fluorescence suggests that the nonradiative energy transfer from the singlet excited state of Pd-porphyrin to the LSP of AgPRs overcame the ultrafast intramolecular intersystem crossing to the triplet excited state, manifesting the spectral properties of the singlet excited state of Pd-porphyrin. The fluorescence nature of this radiation was strongly supported by lifetime measurements of the hybrids of Pd-porphyrin and AgPRs. Furthermore, the dependence of the emissive intensities on the distance between the Pd-porphyrin molecules and the AgPR surfaces showed interesting opposite trends. The fluorescence intensity was increased as the distance between the molecules and the AgPRs was decreased from 10.5 to 1 nm, while the phosphorescence intensity was decreased, which indicates that the LSP-induced fluorescence radiation process from Pd-porphyrin near the AgPRs outweighed the quenching by the AgPRs, even though the phosphorescence significantly suffered quenching.

Atomically Thin Boron Nitride as an Ideal Spacer for Metal-Enhanced Fluorescence

Metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) considerably enhances the luminescence for various applications, but its performance largely depends on the dielectric spacer between the fluorophore and plasmonic system. It is still challenging to produce a defect-free spacer having an optimized thickness with a sub-nanometer accuracy that enables reusability without affecting the enhancement. In this study, we demonstrate the use of atomically thin hexagonal boron nitride (BN) as an ideal MEF spacer owing to its multifold advantages over the traditional dielectric thin films. With rhodamine 6G as a representative fluorophore, it largely improves the enhancement factor (up to ∼95 ± 5), sensitivity (10^-8 M), reproducibility, and reusability (∼90% of the plasmonic activity is retained after 30 cycles of heating at 350 °C in air) of MEF. This can be attributed to its two-dimensional structure, thickness control at the atomic level, defect-free quality, high affinities to aromatic fluorophores, good thermal stability, and excellent impermeability. The atomically thin BN spacers could increase the use of MEF in different fields and industries.

Understanding metal-enhanced fluorescence and structural properties in Au@Ag core-shell nanocubes

Au@Ag core–shell structures have received particular interest due to their localized surface plasmon resonance properties and great potential as oxygen reduction reaction catalysts and building blocks for self-assembly. In this study, Au@Ag core–shell nanocubes (Au@AgNCs) were fabricated in a facile manner via stepwise Ag reduction on Au nanoparticles (AuNPs). The size of the Au@AgNCs and their optical properties can be simply modulated by changing the Ag shell thickness. Structural characterization has been carried out by TEM, SAED, and XRD. The metal-induced fluorescence properties of probe molecules near the Au@AgNCs were measured during sedimentation of the Au@AgNCs. The unique ring-like building block of Au@AgNCs has dual optical functions as a fluorescence quencher or fluorescence enhancement medium depending on the assembled regions.

Analyte-induced disruption of luminescence quenching (AIDLuQ) for femtomolar detection of biomarkers

Here, we present a graphene-based analyte-induced disruption of luminescence quenching (AIDLuQ) assay for specific detection of biomarkers with femtomolar sensitivity. In the AIDLuQ assay, antibody (Ab)-conjugated quantum dots (QDs) are initially deposited on graphene-coated paper. However, the emission from QDs is quenched due to resonance energy transfer to graphene. Upon the addition of an analyte (An) corresponding to Ab, the QDs-Ab-An complex is lifted above the surface resulting in the disruption of the quenching from graphene and the recovery of the luminescence of the QDs. The percentage of recovery depends upon the concentration of the analyte, allowing one to create standard curves for effective quantification. Despite its rapidity in assay time (15-20 min), the graphene platform has limited sensitivities. To further enhance this sensitivity, we embedded gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) into graphene paper. The graphene-Au paper exhibited excellent sensitivity in our model assay and was able to detect ∼10 fM biotin and IgG, unlike graphene that showed only ∼1 nM and ∼10 pM sensitivities.

Roles of Near and Far Fields in Plasmon-Enhanced Singlet Oxygen Production

In plasmon-enhanced singlet oxygen (¹O₂) production, irradiation of a hybrid photosensitizer-metal nanoparticle leads to a significant alteration of the photosensitizer's ¹O₂ yield. The quest for a more rational design of these nanomaterials calls for a better understanding of the enhancement mechanism that, to this day, remains largely unexplored. Herein, we introduce a new methodology to distinguish the near- and far-field contributions to the plasmon-enhanced ¹O₂ production using a tunable model nanoplatform, Rose Bengal-decorated silica-coated metal nanoparticles. By correlating ¹O₂ production to the experimental and simulated optical properties of our nanoparticles, we effectively discriminate how the near- and far-field effects contribute to the plasmonic interactions. We show that these effects work in synergy; i.e., for nanoparticles with a similar local field, the production of ¹O₂ correlates with maximized scattering yields. Our results expound the critical plasmonic aspects in terms of near and far fields for the design of an efficient hybrid plasmonic nanoparticle photosensitizer.
