Little attention has been directed toward identifying the changes which occur in salivary composition in response to exercise. To address this, our article first refers to the main aspects of salivary gland physiology. A knowledge of the neural control of salivary secretion is especially important for the understanding of the effects of exertion on salivary secretion. Both salivary output and composition depend on the activity of the autonomic nervous system and any modification of this activity can be observed indirectly by alternations in the salivary excretion. The effects of physical activity (with reference to factors such as exercise intensity and duration, or type of exercise protocol) on salivary composition are then considered. Exercise might indeed induce changes in several salivary components such as immunoglobulins, hormones, lactate, proteins and electrolytes. Saliva composition might therefore be used as an alternative noninvasive indicator of the response of the different body tissues and systems to physical exertion. In this respect, the response of salivary amylase and salivary electrolytes to incremental levels of exercise is of particular interest. Beyond a certain intensity of exercise, and coinciding with the accumulation of blood lactate (anaerobic threshold or AT), a 'saliva threshold' (Tsa) does indeed exist. Tsa is the point during exercise at which the levels of salivary alpha-amylase and electrolytes (especially Na+) also begin to rise above baseline levels. The occurrence of the 2 thresholds (AT and Tsa) might, in turn, be attributable to the same underlying mechanism, that of increased adrenal sympathetic activity at high exercise intensities.

Voluntary running in male S5B/P1Ras rats fed high fat or high carbohydrate diets

Nineteen week-old male S5B/P1Ras (S5B) rats were randomly assigned to one of 4 groups as follows: (a) activity wheel access (running)/high fat diet (RF); (b) no activity wheel access (non-running)/high fat diet (NRF); (c) activity wheel access (running)/high carbohydrate diet (RC); and (d) no activity wheel access (non-running)/high carbohydrate diet (NRC) for the seven weeks duration of the experiment. Throughout the 7 wk of the experiment, rats ran more during subsequent weeks than they did the previous week. RC rats ran more than RF rats as measured by the running slopes. All groups of rats lost weight at the initiation of the experiment but significantly more weight was lost by running rats than their nonrunning counterparts. The inguinal, epididymal and perirenal/retroperitoneal (P/R) fat depots weighed significantly less in the running than in the nonrunning groups. From among the 3 fat depots, the difference was greatest in the P/R depot. There were no diet or voluntary activity effects on plasma corticosterone concentrations except at week 2 when running rats had higher concentrations than nonrunning rats.

Steroid and pituitary hormone responses to rowing: relative significance of exercise intensity and duration and performance level

To analyse the relative significance of exercise intensity and duration as well as performance capacity, hormone changes were recorded in 16 male rowers in two experiments separated by a year. The test exercises consisted of 7-min (at the supramaximal intensity) and 40-min rowing (at the level of the anaerobic threshold) on a rowing apparatus. In addition, somatotropin and cortisol responses were estimated in rowing for 8 x 2000 m in 14 rowers of national class. All three tests caused significant increases in somatotropin and cortisol concentrations in the blood. Follitropin concentrations were elevated in the 7-min exercise test in the second experiment and in the 40-min exercise test in both experiments. Lutropin and progesterone concentrations increased during the more prolonged exercise in the first experiment. No common change was found in testosterone concentrations. Cortisol and somatotropin response to the 40-min rowing test at anaerobic threshold were more pronounced than to the 7-min exercise test at supramaximal intensity. When the rowers achieved a national class level of performance (the second experiment) the hormone responses to 7-min supramaximal exercise were increased. During the 8 x 2000-m rowing test cortisol but not somatotropin concentration increased to an extremely high level in the rowers of national class. It is concluded that in strenuous exercise cortisol and somatotropin responses were triggered by the exercise intensity threshold. The exact magnitude of the response would seem to have depended on additional stimuli caused by exercise duration and on possibility of mobilizing hormone reserves.

Plasma beta-endorphin and beta-lipotropin levels increase in well trained athletes after competition and non competitive exercise

Plasma beta-endorphin (beta-EP) and beta-lipotropin (beta-LPH) levels were measured in 15 healthy trained marathon runners. These hormones were evaluated in two different conditions: 1-before (1h) and after a marathon race (n = 10); 2-before, during and after a prolonged (90 min) submaximal exercise (bicycle ergometer at 50% VO2 max) (n = 5). In these latter group plasma beta-EP and beta-LPH levels were measured every 15 min for 165 min. In all the athletes, both plasma beta-EP and beta-LPH levels were significantly higher after the end of the marathon race than in basal conditions (p less than 0.01). The prolonged exercise with bicycle ergometer significantly stimulated plasma beta-EP and beta-LPH levels. Starting 60 min after the beginning of the exercise, plasma beta-EP and beta-LPH levels resulted significantly higher than basal values until the end of the exercise (p less than 0.01 at 60, 75 and 90 min). These data confirming that marathon running is a potent stress stimulus, showed that the duration and related factors but not the work load may be considered critical in stimulating beta-EP and beta-LPH release during physical exercise.

Adrenocortical responses of pigeons (Columba livia) to treadwheel exercise

Voluntary flight has previously been observed to stimulate adrenocortical activity in pigeons and in the present study increased circulating corticosterone levels were observed in adult feral pigeons forced to exercise in a treadwheel. The magnitude of the corticosterone response to treadwheel exercise was related to the speed of the moving drum, and hence to the work rate involved. Rapidly increasing the ambient temperature also stimulated corticosterone secretion in pigeons and masked the stimulatory effect of exercise. Treadwheel locomotion may serve as a laboratory model for the endocrine physiology of exercise and complements studies on flight.

Flight stimulates adrenocortical activity in pigeons (Columba livia)

The influence of long-distance flight on corticosterone secretion has been examined in trained racing pigeons. Flights of 315-561 min from release sites 115-557 km from the home loft greatly increased the circulating corticosterone concentration in comparison with the levels in nonexercised controls sampled before release or bled in the loft at the times of release or arrival. The increase in corticosterone concentration was unrelated to the distance flown or duration of flight. Flights of less than 1 min duration (from release sites 100 m from the loft) increased the corticosterone concentration, in comparison with that in the loft controls, but to levels much lower (P less than 0.001) than those following long-distance flights and to concentrations similar to those in birds that were returned to the loft by hand.

Plasma vasopressin, renin activity, and aldosterone responses to maximal exercise in active college females

The effect of maximal treadmill exercise on plasma concentrations of vasopressin (AVP); renin activity (PRA); and aldosterone (ALDO) was studied in nine female college basketball players before and after a 5-month basketball season. Pre-season plasma AVP increased (p less than 0.05) from a pre-exercise concentration of 3.8 +/- 0.5 to 15.8 +/- 4.8 pg X ml-1 following exercise. Post-season, the pre-exercise plasma AVP level averaged 1.5 +/- 0.5 pg X ml-1 and increased to 16.7 +/- 5.9 pg X ml-1 after the exercise test. PRA increased (p less than 0.05) from a pre-exercise value of 1.6 +/- 0.6 to 6.8 +/- 1.7 ngAI X ml-1 X hr-1 5 min after the end of exercise during the pre-season test. In the post-season, the pre-exercise PRA was comparable (2.4 +/- 0.6 ngAI X ml- X hr-1), as was the elevation found after maximal exercise (8.3 +/- 1.9 ngAI X ml- X hr-1). Pre-season plasma ALDO increased (p less than 0.05) from 102.9 +/- 30.8 pg X ml-1 in the pre-exercise period to 453.8 +/- 54.8 pg X ml-1 after the exercise test. In the post-season the values were 108.9 +/- 19.4 and 365.9 +/- 64.4 pg X ml-1, respectively. Thus, maximal exercise in females produced significant increases in plasma AVP, renin activity, and ALDO that are comparable to those reported previously for male subjects. Moreover, this response is remarkably reproducible as demonstrated by the results of the two tests performed 5 months apart.

Greater serum GH response to arm than to leg exercise performed at equivalent oxygen uptake

The aim of this study was to provide information concerning the mechanism of exercise-induced stimulation of growth hormone (GH) release in human subjects. For this reason serum GH as well as some hemodynamic variables and blood concentrations of noradrenaline (NA), insulin (IRI), lactate (LA), glucose (BG), and free fatty acids (FFA) were determined in seven healthy male subjects exercising on a bicycle ergometer with arms or legs and running on a treadmill at equivalent oxygen consumption levels. Significantly greater increases in serum GH concentration accompanied arm exercises than those observed during the leg exercises. This was accompanied by greater increases in heart rate, blood pressure, and plasma NA and blood lactate concentrations. Serum IRI decreased during both leg exercises and did not change during the arm exercise. There were no differences in BG and plasma FFA concentrations between the three types of exercise. The role of humoral and neural signals responsible for the greater GH response to arm exercise is discussed. The findings are consistent with the hypothesis that neural afferent signals sent by muscle "metabolic receptors" participate in the activation of GH release during physical exercise. It seems likely that the stimulation of these chemoreceptors is more pronounced when smaller muscle groups are engaged at a given work load. However, a contribution of efferent impulses derived from the brain motor centres to the control system of GH secretion during exercise is also possible.

Habituation of the corticosterone response of ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) to daily treadmill exercise

The habituation of the corticosterone response of ducks to treadmill exercise (1.1 km/hr 0 degrees incline for 60 min) has been determined over a 28-day period. In untrained birds 30 min of treadmill exercise resulted in a marked (P less than 0.001) increase in the basal plasma corticosterone level. After 60 min of exercise the corticosterone concentration remained elevated (P less than 0.001) in comparison with basal and control (nonexercised) levels but was less (P less than 0.01) than that at 30 min. Following exercise the concentration declined to basal levels within 60 min. After 7 days of daily training the peak (30 min) corticosterone response to exercise diminished by greater than 50% and was absent in birds trained for 21 days. This habituation of the corticosterone response may be due to adrenocortical stimulation by pituitary adrenocorticotrophin (ACTH) being reduced. As the stimulatory effect of ACTH administration (8 IU/kg) on corticosterone secretion does not habituate in birds treated daily (for 28 days), the reduced corticosterone response to exercise may be due to decreased ACTH release rather than to a reduction in adrenal ACTH sensitivity.
