Correlation between substitution pattern and reaction pathway in the formation of polychlorodibenzofurans

Formation pathways of PCDD/Fs during the Co-combustion of municipal solid waste and coal

The co-combustion of simulated municipal solid waste (SMSW) and the coal in a drop-tube furnace is studied in five test cases. The concentration and signature evolution of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD) and -furans (PCDF) in both flue gases and fly ashes are monitored at the level of individual congeners, using statistical methods. Special attention is paid to chlorophenol (CP)-route congeners, 2,3,7,8-substitution, and 1,9-substitution, to reveal the formation pathways of PCDD/Fs and the interaction between SMSW and coal. It is identified that the increase of SMSW proportion alters the major formation pathways from CP-route to chlorophenols/chlorobenzenes condensation and de novo synthesis. The coal-induced carbon enhances the adsorption capacity of fly ash particles for PCDD/Fs, yet facilitates the generation of carbon matrixes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, both of which will significantly boost the de novo synthesis with the increase of SMSW-induced chlorine and catalytic metals. Further investigations about restricting the participation of chlorine in PCDD/Fs synthesis are essential to increase the treatment capacity of MSW and to reduce the PCDD/Fs emission.

Long-term monitoring and modeling of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans from municipal solid waste incinerators and surrounding area in northern Taiwan

Municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWIs) have long been the major contributors of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) to ambient air in Taiwan. After stringent MSWI emission standards were introduced in 2001, the long-term continuous monitoring of flue gas and ambient air quality became necessary to ensure the effectiveness of the related control strategies. Three MSWIs and the surrounding ambient air were investigated in the current study for PCDD/F characteristics during 2006 to 2011. The average concentrations in the flue gas ranged from 0.008 ~ 0.0488 ng I-TEQ/Nm(3), which is much less than the emission standard in Taiwan (0.1 ng I-TEQ/Nm(3)) (I-TEQ is the abbreviation of International Toxic Equivalent). This led to extremely low levels in the ambient air, 0.0255 pg I-TEQ/Nm(3), much less than the levels seen in most urban areas around the world. Additionally, the results obtained using the Industrial Source Complex Short-Term Dispersion Model (ISCST3) indicate that the PCDD/F contributions from the three MSWIs to the ambient air were only in the range from 0.164 ~ 0.723 %. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that the PCDD/Fs in the air samples had very similar characteristics to those from mobile sources. The results thus show that stringent regulations have been an effective control strategy, especially for urban areas, such as Taipei City.

The reduction of dioxin emissions from the processes of heat and power generation

The first reports that it is possible to emit dioxins from the heat and power generation sector are from the beginning of the 1980s. Detailed research proved that the emission of dioxins might occur during combustion of hard coal, brown coal, and furnace oil as well as coke-oven gas. The emission of dioxins occurs in wood incineration; wood that is clean and understood as biomass; or, in particular, wood waste (polluted). This paper thoroughly discusses the mechanism of dioxin formation in thermal processes, first and foremost in combustion processes. The parameters influencing the quantity of dioxins formed and the dependence of their quantity on the conditions of combustion are highlighted. Furthermore, the methods of reducing dioxin emissions from combustion processes (primary and secondary) are discussed. The most efficacious methods that may find application in the heat and power generation sector are proposed; this is relevant from the point of view of the implementation of the Stockholm Convention resolutions in Poland with regard to persistent organic pollutants.

The Possibilities of Reduction of Polychlorinated Dibenzo-P-Dioxins and Polychlorinated Dibenzofurans Emission

In the study the most important and known polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzo-furans (PCDFs) emission sources are presented and known methods of reduction of dioxin emission to the atmosphere are discussed in detail. It is indicated that the most relevant emission source is a combustion process. The mechanism of dioxin formation in thermal processes is presented in brief. The author characterized primary methods of reduction of PCDDs/PCDFs emission encompassing the interference into the combustion process to minimize their formation and discussed known secondary methods aimed at their removal from the stream of waste gases. It was attempted to make a critical assessment of PCDD/Fs reduction methods described in literature.

Dioxin formation from waste incineration

There has been great concern about dioxins-polychlorinated dibenzo dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzo furans (PCDFs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)-causing contamination in the environment because the adverse effects of these chemicals on human health have been known for many years. Possible dioxin-contamination has received much attention recently not only by environmental scientists but also by the public, because dioxins are known to be formed during the combustion of industrial and domestic wastes and to escape into the environment via exhaust gases from incinerators. Consequently, there is a pressing need to investigate the formation mechanisms or reaction pathways of these chlorinated chemicals to be able to devise ways to reduce their environmental contamination. A well-controlled small-scale incinerator was used for the experiments in the core references of this review. These articles report the investigation of dioxin formation from the combustion of various waste-simulated samples, including different kinds of paper, various kinds of wood, fallen leaves, food samples, polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyvinylidene chloride, polyethylene tetraphthalate (PET), and various kinds of plastic products. These samples were also incinerated with inorganic chlorides (NaCl, KCl, CuCI2, MgCl2, MnCl2, FeCl2, CoCl2, fly ash, and seawater) or organic chlorides (PVC, chlordane, and pentachlorophenol) to investigate the role of chlorine content and/or the presence of different metals in dioxin formation. Some samples, such as newspapers, were burned after they were impregnated with NaCl or PVC, as well as being cocombusted with chlorides. The roles of incineration conditions, including chamber temperatures, O2 concentrations, and CO concentrations, in dioxin formation were also investigated. Dioxins (PCDDs, PCDFs, and coplanar-PCBs) formed in the exhaust gases from a controlled small-scale incinerator, where experimental waste samples were burned, were analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Formation of total PCDFs was much higher than that of PCDDs in all samples. The total PCDFs comprised 70%-90% of the total dioxin formed. The amount of total PCDFs formed ranged from 0.78 ng/g (newspaper) to 8,490ng/g (PVC burned in high CO concentration). The amount of total PCDDs formed ranged from 0.02ng/g (newspaper) to 430ng/g (PVC). Coplanar PCBs were found at the lowest level of the dioxins formed. Their formation levels ranged from 0ng/g (newspaper) to 77.6ng/g (PVC). It is obvious that the samples with either inorganic or organic chlorides produced much more dioxins than the sample without chlorides when incinerated under similar conditions. It is not clear how inorganic and organic chloride contribute differently to dioxin formation. Among the metals examined, copper seems to have higher activity toward dioxin formation than other metals. It acted not only as a catalyst but also as a transmitter of heterogeneous chlorine. The toxicity equivalence quantity (TEQ) values generally correlated with the amount of chlorine content in the samples and the amount of dioxin formed in exhaust gases from an incinerator. When the same sample was incinerated at different temperatures, however, the sample burned at low temperature yielded a higher TEQ value than did the sample burned at high temperature. The samples that did not contain chlorine or were not combusted with chlorides exhibited low TEQ values. In contrast, samples with high chlorine content, such as PVC (51.3%), gave high TEQ values. Combustion temperatures may play an important role in dioxin formation in exhaust gases from the incineration of waste materials. However, no significant relationship between dioxin formation and chamber temperatures was reported in the core articles. However, It is obvious that dioxin formation occurred at temperatures above 450'C and was reduced significantly at temperatures above 850 degrees C. The reaction occurring in an incinerator is extremely complex, and there are many factors in addition to combustion temperature influencing dioxin formation. Even though it is possible to hypothesize reasonable formation mechanisms of dioxins produced in exhaust gases according to the results obtained from experiments in classical chemistry, the reactions involved in an incinerator are extremely complex and heterogeneous. More detailed investigation of the many individual factors influencing dioxin formation is needed to find ways to reduce their formation in individual and municipal incinerators.

Is phenol condensation one of the major pathways in the formation of polychlorinated dibenzofurans in municipal waste incinerators?: Model prediction vs. field observation

The role of phenol condensation pathways in the formation of polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDF) in a municipal waste incinerator was assessed by comparing predicted PCDF homologue and isomer patterns with those obtained from the incinerator. A two-phenol condensation model, dependent only on the distribution of phenols, was used to predict the distributions of PCDF congeners in the incinerator. Complete distributions of phenols and PCDF congeners were obtained from the incinerator. To quantify the degree of agreement between obtained isomer distributions and those predicted by the model, R-squared values from linear correlations were calculated for the dichlorinated- through hexachlorinated-isomers. They ranged from 0.001 to 0.1. Agreement between obtained and predicted PCDF isomers was very poor for all homologues, suggesting that phenol condensation pathways are unlikely to be the primary route in the formation of PCDF in the incinerator. However, dibenzofuran (DF) is likely to be produced from a condensation of two phenols. This paper shows the use of PCDF homologue and isomer patterns calculated by the two-phenol condensation model for testing PCDF formation mechanism attribution in a municipal waste incinerator.

CuCl2-catalyzed PCDD/F formation and congener patterns from phenols

Homologue and isomer patterns of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin (PCDD) and polychlorinated dibenzofuran (PCDF) in CuCl2-catalyzed formation were studied in an isothermal flow reactor using a distribution of 20 phenols as measured in municipal waste incinerator (MWI) exhaust gases. A mixture of 20 phenols was synthesized and used as reactants for this study because phenols are known to be key precursors in the formation of PCDD/F. Experiments were conducted at 400 degrees C. The 92% of nitrogen (N2) and 8% of oxygen (O2) were used as a carrier gas. PCDD/F homologue and isomer patterns with dibenzo-p-dioxin (DD) and dibenzofuran (DF) were obtained from a mixture of 20 phenols. DF+PCDF formation was favored over DD+PCDD formation. The major homologue groups formed were non-chlorinated DD and DF, and PCDD/F homologue fraction decreased with the degree of chlorination. PCDD/F homologue and isomer distributions were almost constant. Phenol and lower chlorinated phenols present in high amount played an important role in PCDD/F congener distributions. The results presented here can be used as characteristics or fingerprints for homologue and isomer patterns of PCDD/F formation attribution in CuCl2-catalyzed reaction from phenols.

Homologue and isomer patterns of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans from phenol precursors: comparison with municipal waste incinerator data

The role of phenol precursors in polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin (PCDD) and dibenzofuran (PCDF) formation in municipal waste incinerators is assessed on the basis of homologue and isomer patterns. Homologue and isomer patterns of PCDD and PCDF congeners formed from phenols both in the gas phase and via particle-mediated reactions were studied in an isothermal flow reactor. A mixture of unsubsitituted phenol and 19 chlorinated phenols in relative concentrations found in a municipal waste incinerator (MWI) stack gas was used for this study. PCDD and PCDF homologue and isomer patterns obtained from the phenol experiments were compared with those observed in MWI data. From the phenol experiments, gas-phase formation at 600-700 degrees C favors PCDF formation whereas particle-mediated formation at 400 degrees C favors PCDD formation. Unsubstituted phenol, which was present in high concentration, played a significant role in the formation of PCDD/F congeners under both sets of experimental conditions. PCDD/F distributions in MWI flue gas and fly ash samples were differentfrom those observed in the phenol experiments, suggesting that direct phenol condensation was not the primary route of PCDD/F formation at the incinerators. Gas-phase phenol condensation is a source of dibenzofuran, with subsequent particle-mediated chlorination resulting in PCDF formation. In the case of PCDD formation, phenol condensation may be responsible for the formation of certain highly chlorinated congeners. In this paper we demonstrate the use of homologue and isomer patterns for PCDD/F formation mechanism attribution in municipal waste incinerators.

Low-resolution mass spectrometric relative response factors (RRFs) and relative retention times (RRTs) on two common gas chromatographic stationary phases for 87 polychlorinated dibenzofurans

All 87 tetra- to octa-chlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) were analysed using high-resolution gas chromatography/low-resolution mass spectrometry (HRGC-LRMS). The mass spectrometer was operated in two different modes: electron ionisation (EI), and negative ion chemical ionisation (NCI) with methane as a reagent gas. Baseline separation and identification of all PCDF congeners was carried out using one non-polar (DB-5) and one polar (RT-2330) capillary GC column. Relative retention times (RRTs) on both columns, and relative response factors (RRFs) in both EI- and NCI-modes, were calculated for all 87 of the PCDFs. Comparison of the EI-RRFs and NCI-RRFs showed that the mass spectrometric NCI-responses varied to a higher degree than the EI-responses. The level of NCI-response was dependent on the substitution positions of the chlorine atoms on the dibenzofuran molecule skeleton. The ratio between the highest and lowest RRFs was 26 in the NCI-mode, but only 2.3 in the EI-mode. Thus, quantification of tetra- to octa-CDFs in environmental samples using the NCI-mode will result in incorrect estimates of PCDF concentrations unless 13C-labelled internal standards are used for each congener, or RRFs are taken into consideration. In contrast, the quantification of PCDFs in the EI-mode using a single internal 13C-labelled PCDF standard for each PCDF homologue is accurate according to the findings in this investigation. A flue gas sample from a municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) analysed in the NCI-mode was quantified with and without NCI-RRFs. When using NCI-RRFs the reported concentration of SigmaPCDFs in the flue gas sample increased by 40%. Furthermore, TCDF analysis was compared using two mass spectrometers (a VG 12-250 and a Finnigan 4500) operating in EI-mode. These quadrupole instruments performed equally well, giving similar EI-RRFs for the tested compounds.

Perspectives on the formation of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans during municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration and other combustion processes

The pathways by which polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) are formed and the interactions between their aromatic precursors, in particular chlorophenols (ClPhs), and transition metal catalysts are discussed. A literature survey and data from pilot-scale combustion experiments allow conclusions to be drawn on the relations between ClPhs and PCDD/Fs in municipal waste incineration and other combustion processes. The results suggest that the ClPh pathway is among the most important for the formation of PCDD/Fs.

Modeling the formation of PCDD/F in solid waste incinerators

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/F) appear in unacceptable amounts in the gaseous emissions during the incineration of wastes containing significant quantities of chlorine and metals, such as MSW and medical waste. They are formed both in the gas phase at temperatures above 600 degrees C and on the surface of the solid phase (flyash) in the temperature range 400-225 degrees C. Both the precursor (from existing smaller chlorinated molecules) and de novo (from elemental carbon) routes are involved. An empirically derived global model for their de novo formation on flyash in MSW and medical waste incinerators has now been extended to include the precursor mechanism, and a gas phase formation component, with separate rate expressions for PCDD and PCDF. Homogeneous PCDD formation is governed by the concentration of chlorophenols and PCDF by that of chlorophenols and chlorobenzenes. The result is more complete system which distinguishes between the gas and solid phase contributions to the I-TEQ. An additional step for the adsorption of gaseous PCDD/F back onto the solid phase during cooling suggests this should be minimal in the gas ducts of an incinerator. The extended model has been tested against experimental data collected from a well-controlled pilot incinerator and commercial incinerators, and found to adequately describe the measured outputs. With the model it should be possible to predict the PCDD/F emissions from commercial incinerators, provided that the ash properties and the overall temperature-time profiles are known.

Dechlorination and destruction of PCDD, PCDF and PCB on selected fly ash from municipal waste incineration

The potential of fly ash to dechlorinate and destroy PCDD, PCDF and PCB was tested under oxygen deficient conditions in the laboratory. Specifically, two types of fly ash were compared, originating either from a fluidized bed incinerator using Ca(OH)2 spray (FA1), or a stoker incinerator without Ca(OH)2 impact (FA2). Results from the present study indicate that on FA2 type fly ash, the degradation processes of OCDD, OCDF and D10CB occurred primarily via dechlorination/hydrogenation up to temperature settings of 340 degrees C. In contrast, FAI type fly ash was found to effect both dechlorination and destruction of these compounds already at temperature settings of 260 degrees C. The dechlorination velocity of PCDD and PCDF did not differ significantly. However, the first dechlorination step of OCDF in the 1,9-position occurred faster compared to the first dechlorination step of OCDD. The isomer pattern resulting from the dechlorination processes was quite similar on both FAI and FA2, indicating that differences in alkalinity or elemental composition of the two types of fly ashes do not have a significant influence on the position of dechlorination. PCDD and PCDF dechlorination of the 2,3,7,8-positions was not favoured over dechlorination of the 1,4.6,9-positions on either type of fly ash. In contrast, dechlorination of PCB occurred predominantly on the toxicological relevant 3- and 4-positions. The dechlorination/destruction processes were completed on both types of fly ash at 380 degrees C within one hour, which correlates well with results obtained from actual plant operation practices.

Effects of copper chloride on formation of polychlorinated dibenzofurans in model waste incineration in a laboratory-scale fluidized-bed reactor

Combustion experiments in a laboratory-scale fluidized-bed reactor have been performed to clarify the effects of copper chloride as a catalyst on polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) formation in municipal waste incineration. We used model wastes with and without copper chloride (CuCl2 x 2H2O) as a catalyst, both of which contained polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as a chlorine source. Combustion temperature was set to 900 degrees C, and the amount of air supplied was twice as much as the theoretical amount. The experimental setup had been carefully planned to ensure avoidance of the influences of previous experiments. Results of these present experiments revealed that copper chloride in the waste increased the amount of PCDFs formed and made the homologue profile shifted towards the highly chlorinated species. Copper chloride contributes to PCDFs formation by promoting chlorination via catalytic reactions, whereby the reaction could be important in that organic matters are chlorinated directly by chlorinated compounds related to Deacon reaction such as copper chloride. It was elucidated that characteristic isomer distribution patterns appeared in case the waste contained copper chloride. It is probable in our experiment with copper chloride that PCDFs are mainly formed via catalytic reactions of copper compounds and carbon.

Formation of dioxins (PCDDs/PCDFs) by dioxin-free fly ash as a catalyst and relation with several chlorine-sources

Simplified thermal formation experiments have been conducted using dioxin-free fly ash as a catalyst with many kinds of combustible samples such as newspaper, kerosene, paraffin, PE (polyethylene), PP (polypropylene) and PVC. Chlorine sources were PVC, NaCl and HCl. The combustion of samples containing chlorine in the absence of dioxin-free fly ash produced dioxins at a low level although HCl was present in the gas stream. On the other hand, the combustion of samples without chlorine with dioxin-free fly ash increased dioxins formation to a level around 10 times higher than that upon heating dioxin-free fly ash alone. This result is considered to be due to the presence of metal chloride in the fly ash and hydrocarbons in the gas stream. The combustion of samples containing either an organic or inorganic chlorine source or using a HCl stream with dioxin-free fly ash increased dioxin level dramatically.

Induction of rat liver microsomal cytochrome P-450 by the pentabromo diphenyl ether Bromkal 70 and half-lives of its components in the adipose tissue

Pentabromo diphenyl ether (Bromkal 70) was investigated for its half-life in perirenal fat of male and female Wistar rats following a single 300 mg/kg p.o. dose. Half-lives of five individual component fractions following extraction and separation with HPLC were between 30 and 91 days in female rats and between 19 and 119 days in male rats. Induction experiments in male and female Wistar rats with long-term (50 mg/kg daily for 28 days) and short-term administration (300 mg/kg once or 100 mg/kg daily for 4 days) resulted in a 2.3-3.9-fold increase of the cytochrome P-450c, an up to 2-fold increase of benzphetamine N-demethylation activity, a 2.2-5.3-fold increase of the benzo[a]pyrene oxidation activity, and an increase of the ethoxyresorufin O-deethylation activity to between 4.1 and 16.6 nmol/min mg microsomal protein. All variations of enzymatic activities were dependent on the animals' sex or on the administration schedule of the pentabromo diphenyl ether. The threshold for induction of the ethoxyresorufin O-deethylation or benzo[a]pyrene oxidation was between 3 and 10 mg/kg. In conclusion, with regard to the induction of cytochrome P-450 types pentabrominated diphenyl ethers behave as mixed-type inducers.
