Socioeconomic disadvantage, mental disorders and risk of 12-month suicide ideation and attempt in the National Comorbidity Survey Replication (NCS-R) in US

The association between community-level economic deprivation and incidences of emergency department visits on account of attempted suicides in Maryland

Background

Suicide is a major cause of mortality in the United States, accounting for 14.5 deaths per 100,000 population. Many emergency department (ED) visits in the United States are due to attempted suicides. Suicide attempts predict subsequent completed suicides. Socioeconomic factors, such as community-level socioeconomic deprivation, significantly affect many traditional risk factors for attempted suicides and suicides.

Aim

To determine the association between community-level socioeconomic deprivation and ED visits for attempted suicide in Maryland.

Methods

A retrospective analysis of attempted suicides in the Maryland State Emergency Department Database from January 2018 to December 2020. Community-level socioeconomic deprivation was measured using the Distress Community Index (DCI). Multivariate regression analyses were conducted to identify the association between DCI and attempted suicides/self-harm.

Results

There were 3,564,987 ED visits reported in the study period, with DCI data available for 3,236,568 ED visits; 86.8% were younger than 45 years, 64.8% were females, and 54.6% non-Hispanic Whites. Over the study period, the proportion of ED visits due to attempted suicide was 0.3%. In the multivariate logistic regression, compared to prosperous zones, those in comfortable (OR = 0.80, 95% CI: 0.73-0.88, p < 0.01), Mid-Tier (OR = 0.76, 95%CI:0.67-0.86, p < 0.01), At-Risk (OR = 0.77; 95%CI: 0.65-0.92, p < 0.01) and Distressed zones (OR = 0.53; 95% CI:0.42-0.66, p < 0.01) were less likely to visit the ED for attempted suicide.

Conclusion

Prosperous communities had the highest rate of attempted suicides, with the risk of attempted suicide increasing as individuals move from the least prosperous to more prosperous areas.

Patient characteristics, validity of clinical diagnoses and Outcomes Associated with Suicidality in Inpatients with Symptoms of Depression (OASIS-D): design, procedures and outcomes

BACKGROUND

Suicidality, ranging from passive suicidal thoughts to suicide attempt, is common in major depressive disorder (MDD). However, relatively little is known about patient, illness and treatment characteristics in those with co-occurring MDD and suicidality, including the timing of and factors associated with the offset, continuation or reemergence of suicidality. Here, we present the background, rationale, design and hypotheses of the Patient Characteristics, Validity of Clinical Diagnoses and Outcomes Associated with Suicidality in Inpatients with Symptoms of Depression (OASIS-D) study, an investigator-initiated, observational study, funded by Janssen-Cilag GmbH.

METHODS/RESULTS

OASIS-D is an eight-site, six-month, cohort study of patients aged 18-75 hospitalized with MDD. Divided into three sub-studies and patient populations (PPs), OASIS-D will (i) systematically characterize approximately 4500 consecutively hospitalized patients with any form of unipolar depressive episode (PP1), (ii) evaluate the validity of the clinical diagnosis of moderate or severe unipolar depressive episode with the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I.) and present suicidality (at least passive suicidal thoughts) present ≥ 48 h after admission with the Sheehan-Suicide Tracking Scale (S-STS), assessing also predictors of the diagnostic concordance/discordance of MDD in around 500 inpatients (PP2), and (iii) characterize and prospectively follow for 6 months 315 inpatients with a research-verified moderate or severe unipolar depressive episode and at least passive suicidal thoughts ≥ 48 h after admission, evaluating treatment and illness/response patterns at baseline, hospital discharge, 3 and 6 months. Exploratory objectives will describe the association between the number of days with suicidality and utilization of outpatient and inpatient care services, and structured assessments of factors influencing the risk of self-injurious behavior without suicidal intent, and of continuous, intermittent or remitted suicidality during the 6-month observation period.

CONCLUSION

Despite their frequency and clinical relevance, relatively little is known about patient and treatment characteristics of individuals with MDD and suicidality, including factors moderating and mediating the outcome of both MDD and suicidality. Results of the OASIS-D study are hoped to improve the understanding of the frequency, correlates and 6-month naturalistic treatment and outcome trajectories of different levels of suicidality in hospitalized adults with MDD and suicidality.

The associations of decent work with wellbeing and career capabilities: a meta-analysis

Introduction

As a global sustainable development goal, the decent work notion has been promoted all over the world at theoretical, practical, and research levels for the purpose of enhancing people's capacity to enjoy freedom, equity, security, and human dignity at work. However, conclusive findings of the impact of decent work on people's wellbeing and longer-term career development are still missing due to a lack of systematic reviews on this topic. This study aims to (a) investigate the associations of decent work with people's wellbeing and their capabilities for sustaining career development and (b) examine the differential associations across different subgroups.

Methods

Databases of literature archived on or before 4 March 2022 were searched. A total of 46 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the analysis for the combined Pearson correlation coefficient (r) to estimate the associations of decent work with wellbeing and career capabilities, among which 30 studies (16,026 participants) were used for calculating the association between decent work and wellbeing whereas 26 studies (12,384 participants) were used for decent work and career capabilities.

Results and discussion

First, decent work demonstrates a medium association with wellbeing (r = .48, 95% CI [.45, .51]), and a medium association with career capabilities (r = .44, 95% CI [.40, .49]). Second, no significant differences with respect to the association of decent work with wellbeing and career capabilities were identified across subgroups categorized by developed/developing countries, population type, social status of participants as employee or student, participants from vulnerable/general groups, aspects of wellbeing/career capabilities, and study design. These results pose important implications for informing future research and practice to measure and promote decent work across the world.

Application of Machine Learning Techniques to Help in the Feature Selection Related to Hospital Readmissions of Suicidal Behavior

Suicide was the main source of death from external causes in Spain in 2020, with 3,941 cases. The importance of identifying those mental disorders that influenced hospital readmissions will allow us to manage the health care of suicidal behavior. The feature selection of each hospital in this region was carried out by applying Machine learning (ML) and traditional statistical methods. The results of the characteristics that best explain the readmissions of each hospital after assessment by the psychiatry specialist are presented. Adjustment disorder, alcohol abuse, depressive syndrome, personality disorder, and dysthymic disorder were selected for this region. The most influential methods or characteristics associated with suicide were benzodiazepine poisoning, suicidal ideation, medication poisoning, antipsychotic poisoning, and suicide and/or self-harm by jumping. Suicidal behavior is a concern in our society, so the results are relevant for hospital management and decision-making for its prevention.

Predictors of Emergency Department Use for Suicidal Behaviors among Patients with Substance-Related Disorders

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to identify predictors of emergency department (ED) use for suicide ideation or suicide attempt compared with other reasons among 14,158 patients with substance-related disorders (SRD) in Quebec (Canada).

METHODS

Longitudinal data on clinical, sociodemographic, and service use variables for patients who used addiction treatment centers in 2012-13 were extracted from Quebec administrative databases. A multinomial logistic regression was produced, comparing predictors of suicide ideation or attempts to other reasons for ED use in 2015-16.

RESULTS

Patients using ED for both suicide ideation and attempt were more likely to have bipolar or personality disorders, problems related to the social environment, 4+ previous yearly outpatient consultations with their usual psychiatrist, high prior ED use, and dropout from SRD programs in addiction treatment centers in the previous 7 years, compared with those using ED for other reasons. Patients with alcohol- or drug-related disorders other than cannabis and living in the least materially deprived areas, urban territories, and university healthcare regions made more suicide attempts than those using ED for other reasons. Patients with common mental disorders, 1-3 previous yearly outpatient consultations with their usual psychiatrist, one previous treatment episode in addiction treatment centers, and those using at least one SRD program experienced more suicide ideation than patients using ED for other reasons.

CONCLUSION

Clinical variables most strongly predicted suicidal behaviors, whereas completion of SRD programs may help to reduce them. SRD services and outreach strategies should be reinforced, particularly for patients with complex issues living in more advantaged urban areas. HIGHLIGHTSOver 10% of ED visits were for suicidal behaviors among patients with SRD.ED use for suicidal behaviors was mainly associated with clinical variables.Addiction treatment centers may help reduce ED use for suicidal behaviors.

Estimating the association between mental health disorders and suicide: a review of common sources of bias and challenges and opportunities for US-based research

Purpose of review

The purpose of this review is to 1) illuminate prevalent methodological approaches and estimates of association between mental health diagnoses and suicide from the meta-analytic literature; 2) discuss key internal and external validity concerns with these estimates; and 3) highlight some of the unique attributes and challenges in US-based suicide research and opportunities to move the evidence base forward.

Recent findings

Globally, there is considerable variability in measures of association between mental health disorders and suicide and a growing debate over methodological approaches to this research. A high suicide incidence makes the US an outlier, and the decentralized nature of US administrative data poses a unique challenge to data linkage that could otherwise advance this research.

Summary

We offer methodological considerations for future research and discuss opportunities made possible by the recent expansion of the US National Violent Death Reporting System to a nationwide registry.

Associations of Suicide Rates With Socioeconomic Status and Social Isolation: Findings From Longitudinal Register and Census Data

Suicide represents a major challenge to public mental health. In order to provide empirical evidence for prevention strategies, we hypothesized current levels of low socioeconomic status (SES) and high social isolation (SI) to be linked to increased suicide rates in N = 390 administrative districts since SES and SI are associated with mental illness. Effects of SES on suicide rates were further expected to be especially pronounced in districts with individuals showing high SI levels as SI reduces the reception of social support and moderates the impact of low SES on poor mental health. We linked German Microcensus data to register data on all 149,033 German suicides between 1997 and 2010 and estimated Prentice and Sheppard's model for aggregate data to test the hypotheses, accounting for spatial effect correlations. The findings reveal increases in district suicide rates by 1.20% (p < 0.035) for 1% increases of district unemployment, suicide rate decreases of -0.39% (p < 0.028) for 1% increases in incomes, increases of 1.65% (p < 0.033) in suicides for 1% increases in one-person-households and increases in suicide rates of 0.54% (p < 0.036) for 1% decreases in single persons' incomes as well as suicide rate increases of 3.52% (p < 0.000) for 1% increases in CASMIN scores of individuals who moved throughout the year preceding suicide. The results represent appropriate starting points for the development of suicide prevention strategies. For the definition of more precise measures, future work should focus on the causal mechanisms resulting in suicidality incorporating individual level data.

Contextual religiosity and the risk of alcohol use disorders and suicidal thoughts among adults in the united states

BACKGROUND

Suicide and alcohol use disorders (AUD) have high public health and economic costs. We investigate the relationship between religious features that are external to the individual (hereafter, contextual religiosity) and individuals' risk of AUD and suicidal thoughts.

METHODS

Data are from Wave 2 of the National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (analytic N = 34,326). Regression analysis assessed whether contextual (i.e., Geographic state) religiosity and membership rates of Catholics and the three major Protestant traditions, are associated with DSM-IV AUD risk in the past 12 months and suicidal thoughts since last interview, controlling for individual and state-level covariates. In a secondary analysis, we test for interactions between individual race/ethnicity and contextual religiosity on the outcomes since prior work suggested differences by race and individual religiosity.

RESULTS

Some contextual religious variables were significantly associated with AUD risk but not suicidal thoughts. Individuals living in a state with higher membership rates of Evangelical Protestant had higher AUD risk (Adjusted Relative Risk [ARR]=1.27, 95%CI=1.08-1.49). Individuals living in states with higher membership rates of Historically Black Protestant had a lower risk of AUD (ARR=0.83, 95% CI=0.72-0.96). The interaction between individual race and contextual-level religious variables on the outcomes were not significant.

LIMITATIONS

NESARC is an observational cross-sectional so causality between religiosity and the outcomes cannot be established.

CONCLUSIONS

The risk of AUD among individuals varies depending on the religious membership rates among Protestant groups within their geographic state of residence. Contextual religiosity may impact AUD risk above and beyond one's individual religiosity.

Remission From Suicidal Ideation Among Those in Chronic Pain: What Factors Are Associated With Resilience?

Although there have been many studies on the link between chronic pain and suicidality, surprisingly little research has focused on resilience and recovery among those in chronic and disabling pain who have had suicidal thoughts. The objectives of this study were to identify the prevalence and correlates of recovery from suicidal thoughts among those in chronic pain. A secondary analysis of a nationally representative sample of Canadians in chronic and disabling pain who had ever had serious suicidal thoughts (N = 635) was conducted to identify the prevalence and characteristics of those who are no longer considering suicide. Data were drawn from the Canadian Community Health Survey-Mental Health. Three in five Canadians in chronic pain (63%) who had seriously considered suicide at some point in their life had been free of these thoughts in the past year. Those free of suicidal ideation were significantly more likely to be older, women, white, better educated, with a confidant, and to use spirituality to cope, but less likely to have low household incomes, difficulties meeting basic expenses, and a history of depression and anxiety disorders. PERSPECTIVE: Almost two-thirds of formerly suicidal Canadians with chronic pain were free from suicidal thoughts in the past year. These findings provide a hopeful message of resilience and recovery in the context of disabling pain and help to improve targeted outreach to those most at risk for unremitting suicidality.

The tide does turn: Predictors of remission from suicidal ideation and attempt among Canadians who previously attempted suicide

The objectives of this study were to identify factors that contribute to (1) remission from suicidal ideation, and (2) remission from suicide attempt, among Canadians with a lifetime history of suicide attempt. Data for this study came from Statistics Canada's nationally representative 2012 Canadian Community Health Survey-Mental Health. A sample of 769 adult respondents who had ever attempted suicide was analyzed with remission from past year suicidal ideation and remission from past year suicide attempt as outcome variables. Of the 769 respondents who had ever attempted suicide, more than two-thirds (69%) were free from suicidal ideation within the past year, and approximately 87% were free from suicide attempts within the past year. Compared to men, odds were 2.66 times greater for women to be free of suicide attempt and 2.65 times greater to be free of suicidal ideation in the past year. Older age, being free of sleep problems and major depressive episode, having no history of chronic childhood physical abuse, and having two or fewer previous suicide attempts were associated with higher odds of remission from both suicide attempt and ideation in the past year.

Is cannabis a risk factor for suicide attempts in men and women with psychotic illness?

OBJECTIVE

To investigate whether recent cannabis use by men and women with psychotic disorders was associated with increased risk of suicide attempt, and to determine associated factors, stratified by sex.

METHODS

Data from 1065 men and 725 women interviewed in the Australian national survey of psychosis were analysed to model separately, for each sex, the impact of daily, casual or no past-year cannabis use and other risk factors including age, on a past-year suicide attempt.

RESULTS

In the past year, 168 (9.4%) participants attempted suicide. Unadjusted analyses showed daily cannabis users of both sexes had significantly increased odds of attempting suicide compared to non-users. After adjusting for confounding factors, this relationship was no longer significant. Depression had the strongest association with attempting suicide for both sexes. Sex differences in other risk factors were observed. In post hoc analysis, daily cannabis use was associated with higher odds of attempting suicide in older men compared to non-users; this was not found in younger men or women.

CONCLUSIONS

Associations between past-year cannabis use and suicide attempts were confounded by other factors (depression, loneliness, homelessness and hallucinations). The possibility of greater risk of suicidal behaviour with regular cannabis use for older men should be considered.

Sociodemographic Antecedent Validators of Suicidal Behavior: A Review of Recent Literature

Suicidal behavior and its prevention constitute a major public health issue. Etiology of suicidal behavior is multifactorial. Whereas current research is mostly focused on clinical and biological risk factors, the sociodemographic risk factors for suicidal behavior, first highlighted by Durkheim, have received less attention. Besides the well-known impact of age and gender, sociodemographic variables such as marital and parental status, education, occupation, income, employment status, religion, migration or minority status, and sexual orientation are repeatedly reported to play an important role in suicidal behavior. This narrative review aimed to summarize recent research on sociodemographic risk factors for suicidal behavior and to elicit possible implications for suicide prevention.

Factors Associated with Achieving Complete Mental Health among Individuals with Lifetime Suicidal Ideation

The objective of this study was to identify factors associated with complete mental health among Canadians who had ever seriously considered suicide. Data for this study were obtained from Statistics Canada's 2012 Canadian Community Health Survey-Mental Health (N = 2,844). The outcome variable examined in this study was complete mental health and was analyzed using binary logistic regression. Of the 2,844 respondents with lifetime suicidal ideation, 1,088 (38.2%) had complete mental health (i.e., had flourishing mental health, no mental illness, and no suicidal ideation in the past 12 months). Those who had a confidant were seven times more likely to have complete mental health. Other factors associated with achieving complete mental health among formerly suicidal respondents include being older, being a woman, having higher income, use of religious coping, and never previously having a mental illness. Considering the importance of these protective factors in formulating public health policies will allow for a more wide-reaching approach to suicide prevention.

Does Gender Explain the Relationship Between Occupation and Suicide? Findings from a Meta-Analytic Study

This report investigated whether suicide risk by occupational groups differed for males and females. We examined this using a sub-set of articles examined in a recent meta-analysis and stratified by gender. For certain occupational groups, males and females had a similar risk of suicide (the military, community service occupations, managers, and clerical workers). There was some indication of gender differences for other occupations (technicians, plant and machine operators and ship's deck crew, craft and related trades workers, and professionals), although these did not reach statistical significance. These findings highlight the complexity of the relationship between occupation and suicide and suggest the possible role of a range of individual, work-related and social-environmental risk factors that may differ for males and females.

Updated trends in suicidal ideation among U.S. adults, 2005-2012

OBJECTIVE

Provide a recent update in the trends of suicidal ideation among adults in the United States from 2005 to 2012.

METHODS

Data from four 2-year cycles (2005-2012) of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were used (analyzed in 2015). Suicidal ideation was assessed via self-report.

RESULTS

For the entire sample, as well as across age-groups, gender and race-ethnicity, there was no statistically significant change in "any suicidal ideations" from 2005-2006 to 2011-2012 (2.95% in 2005-2006 to 3.24% in 2011-2012; P-trendlinear=0.75). However, significant changes in suicidal ideations occurring nearly every day were observed. A linear trend (P=0.03) was present for the entire sample and for men; among the entire sample, the prevalence of having suicidal ideations nearly every day increased from 0.19% in 2005-2006 to 0.52% in 2011-2012. However, a quadratic trend was present for non-Hispanic white women (P=0.03) and Mexican American women (P=0.001).

CONCLUSION

Suicidal ideation occurring nearly every day has increased for men, but recent decreases have been observed for women of non-Hispanic white and Mexican American race-ethnicity. Continued outreach efforts, particularly among men, are needed to help prevent the development of suicidal ideations into suicidal behavior and occurrence.

Five factor model traits as a predictor of suicide ideation and interpersonal suicide risk in a college sample

Research has demonstrated an inconsistent relationship between suicide ideation and personality traits. This is the first study to empirically examine the relationship of the Five Factor Model of personality with current, past and no suicide ideation, and with the two interpersonal risk factors of suicide: thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness (Joiner, T., 2005. Why people die by suicide. Cambridge, MA, US: Harvard University Press). Results indicate that high neuroticism was associated with both current ideation and a history of suicide ideation and extraversion was associated with current ideation. Neuroticism was positively related to thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness, while extraversion was negatively related to these interpersonal predictors of suicide. Agreeableness was negatively related to thwarted belongingness but not perceived burdensomeness, indicating differentiated patterns of relationships between this personality domain and the two suicide constructs. Furthermore, these personality domains predicted 23.82% of variance for thwarted belongingness and 15.07% of the variance for perceived burdensomeness, above and beyond demographic variables associated with suicide ideation. This study, which was conducted with a college sample, demonstrates the potential benefit of identifying predispositional risk factors for suicide ideation and interpersonal predictors of suicide. This may have implications for the development of upstream preventative measures against suicide.

Reliability, validity and preliminary hypothesis tests for the English version of the Psychological Strain Scales (PSS)

BACKGROUND

The original Psychological Strain Scales (PSS) was published with data from a sample of Chinese population, which consisted of four strain scales: value strain, aspiration strain, deprivation strain, and coping strain. This study aims to validate and develop the English version of the PSS instrument.

METHOD

Together with the PSS, Moos׳s Coping Response Inventory (CRI), Spielberger Trait-Anxiety scale, CES-D depression scale, and the NCS suicidal behavior scales were administered in a survey to a sample (N=280) of American college students. Item-total statistics, Cronbach׳s Alpha, Guttman Split-Half coefficient, factor analyses, correlation analysis and t tests were applied to test the reliability and validity of the English version of the PSS. Univariate and multivariable regression analyses were operated to know how extent the PSS predicts psychopathology such as anxiety, depression and suicidal behaviors.

RESULTS

Cronbach׳s Alpha coefficient of PSS was 0.936. The Split-Half coefficient of PSS was 0.839. The reliability of the PSS was excellent. The factor analysis results demonstrated strong construct validity of each scale. The criterion validity and the discriminant validity were both excellent for the English version of PSS instrument.

CONCLUSIONS

With the excellent scores on both reliability and validity, the English version of the PSS scales can be an excellent measurement for estimating the psychological strain levels of American college students as well as predicting their psychopathology. The PSS can be applicable for research to evaluate and predict suicidal behaviors and mental disorders.

Excess mortality after disability retirement due to mental disorders: variations by socio-demographic factors and causes of death

PURPOSE

Mental disorders are the key causes of disability retirement and are associated with a high risk of mortality. Social variations in excess mortality after disability retirement are nevertheless poorly understood. We examined socio-demographic differences in all-cause and cause-specific mortality after disability retirement due to depression and other mental disorders.

METHODS

The data comprised a nationally representative sample of the Finnish population aged 25-64 in 1996 with no prior disability retirement due to mental disorders (N = 392,985). We used Cox regression analysis with disability retirement due to mental disorders as a time-varying covariate and mortality between 1997 and 2007 as the outcome variable.

RESULTS

We found excess mortality after disability retirement due to mental disorders as compared to those with no such retirement in all specific causes of death, in particular alcohol-related causes, suicide, and other unnatural causes. Excess suicide mortality was particularly large after depression-based disability retirement. Younger age groups, non-manual classes, and those living with a partner and children had largest excess mortality, especially from unnatural and alcohol-related causes. However, the absolute number of excess deaths was not always largest in these socio-demographic groups.

CONCLUSIONS

In young adulthood, disability retirement due to depression signifies severe health and other social disadvantages that lead to particularly large excess mortality, especially due to unnatural causes. The protective effects of a high socioeconomic position and family ties against unnatural and alcohol-related deaths are limited among those who have already developed depression or other mental disorders that have led to disability retirement.

The effects of involuntary job loss on suicide and suicide attempts among young adults: evidence from a matched case-control study

OBJECTIVE

To assess the influence of involuntary job loss on suicide and attempted suicide in young adults.

METHOD

A population-based case-control study of young adults (18-34 years) was conducted in New South Wales, Australia. Cases included both suicides (n=84) and attempts (n=101). A structured interview was conducted with next of kin (for suicide cases) and suicide attempters admitted to hospital. Controls selected from the general population were matched to cases by age and sex. Job dismissal or redundancy (involuntary job loss) in the 12 months before suicide or attempt was the main study variable of interest. Suicide and attempts were modelled separately and in combination as outcomes using conditional logistic regression modelling. The analysis was also adjusted for marital status, socio-economic status and diagnosis of an affective or anxiety disorder.

RESULTS

Following adjustment for other variables, involuntary job loss was associated with an odds ratio of 1.82 for suicide and attempted suicide (combined) (95% CI 0.98 to 3.37; p=0.058). Low socio-economic status was associated with an odds ratio of 3.80 for suicide and attempted suicide (95% CI 2.16 to 6.67; p<0.001) compared to high socio-economic status (after adjustment). Diagnosis of a mental disorder was associated with a 7.87 (95% CI 5.16 to 12.01; p<0.001) odds ratio of suicide and attempted suicide compared to no diagnosis (after adjustment). Involuntary job loss was associated with increased odds of suicide and attempts when these were modelled separately, but results did not reach statistical significance.

CONCLUSIONS

Involuntary job loss was associated with increased odds of suicide and attempted suicide. The strength of this relationship was attenuated after adjustment for socio-economic status and mental disorders, which indicates that these may have a stronger influence on suicide than job loss.

Household composition and suicidal behaviour in the adult population of Belgium

PURPOSE

We aimed to estimate the prevalence of suicidal behaviours, i.e. ideation and attempt, in the adult population of Belgium, and to explore their association with household composition.

METHODS

Data of 4,459 adults (25-64 years) from the 2004 Belgian Health Interview Survey were used for analyses. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regressions were used to calculate the odds of engaging in suicidal behaviours according to household type, further controlling for age, sex, income, employment status and social support.

RESULTS

Lifetime prevalence of ideation and attempts was 14 and 4.7 %, respectively. Current prevalence of ideation was 4.0 % and past year prevalence of attempts was 0.5 %. Compared to other household compositions, living alone (A) and as lone parent (P) increased the odds of lifetime and current suicidal thoughts (ORA 2.3, 95 % CI 1.7-2.9 and ORP 3.8, 95 % CI 1.9-7.7) and lifetime attempts (ORA 2.3, 95 % CI 1.4-3.6 and ORP 4.5, 95 % CI 2.4-8.5). When controlling for confounders, single person and single parent households still presented increased adjusted-odds of lifetime and current suicidal thoughts (a-ORA 1.8, 95 % CI 1.1-2.9 and a-ORP 2.3, 95 % CI 1.0-5.5). The likelihood of ever attempted suicide was also higher among single parent households (a-ORP 4.5, 95 % CI 2.4-8.5) after adjustment, but not among those living alone (a-ORA 1.4, 95 % CI 0.8-2.8).

CONCLUSION

Living alone or as lone parent place adults at higher risk for suicide behaviour, and this is only partly explained by lower socio-economic status or poor perceived support.
