Levels of Metals and Organochlorine Pesticides in Kidney, Liver, and Muscle Tissues of Wild Boars (Sus scrofa) from Hatay Province, Eastern Mediterranean Region, Turkey

Tissue distribution and correlations of heavy metals in wild birds from Southern Turkey: an ecologically important region on the west Palearctic migration route

Even if some are essential for biological functions, the accumulation of heavy metals above tolerable physiological limits is potentially toxic to also wild animals. The present study aimed to investigate concentrations of environmentally relevant heavy metals (As, Cd, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Pb, and Zn) in feathers, muscle, heart, kidney, and liver tissues of wild birds (golden eagle [Aquila chrysaetos], sparrowhawk [Accipiter nisus], and white stork [Ciconia ciconia]) from Hatay province, southern Turkey. The metal concentrations of tissues were determined by a validated ICP-OES analysis method after microwave digestion. The concentration differences of metals in species/tissues and the correlations between essential/non-essential metals were determined by statistical analysis. According to the results, Fe (326.87±3.60 mg kg^-1) had the highest, and Hg (0.09±0.00 mg kg^-1) had the lowest mean concentration in all tissues. Compared to the literature; Cu, Hg, Pb, and Zn concentrations were lower; Cd, Fe, and Mn concentrations were higher. The correlations between As and all essentials; Cd and Cu, Fe; Hg and Cu, Fe, Zn; Pb and all essentials were significantly positive. In the conclusion, while essential Cu, Fe, and Zn are below the threshold value and do not pose a risk, Mn is close to the threshold value. Therefore, periodically monitoring the pollutant concentrations in bioindicators is a key necessity for the early determination of biomagnification trends and prevention of potential toxic stress on wildlife ecology.

Does environmental pollution affect male reproductive system in naturally exposed vertebrates? A systematic review

Due to environmental contamination, the environment constantly receives pollutants from various anthropic actions. These pollutants put ecological health at risk due to contamination and accumulation in living organisms, including wild animals and humans. Exposure can cause physiological, morphological, and behavioral changes in living beings. In this context, laboratory studies have frequently investigated how environmental contaminants affect the male reproductive system and gametes. However, few studies have examined how these contaminants affect male reproduction in naturally exposed animals. To better understand this topic, we conducted a systematic review of the effects of exposing male vertebrate animals to polluted environments on their reproductive functions. After an extensive search using the PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science databases, 39 studies met our inclusion criteria and were eligible for this review. This study showed that reproductive damages were frequent in fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals exposed to contaminated environments. Wild animals are exposed mainly to endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs), toxic metals, and radiation. Exposure to pollutants causes a reduction in androgen levels, impaired spermatogenesis, morphological damage to reproductive organs, and decreased sperm quality, leading to reduced fertility and population decline. Although several species have been studied, the number of studies is limited for some groups of vertebrates. Wildlife has proven valuable to our understanding of the potential effects of environmental contaminants on human and ecosystem health. Thus, some recommendations for future investigations are provided. This review also creates a baseline for the understanding state of the art in reproductive toxicology studies.

Enhanced degradation of DDT using a novel iron-assisted hydrochar catalyst combined with peroxymonosulfate: Experiment and mechanism analysis

Poplar wood (PW) hydrochar modified by iron (Fe@HC) was prepared greenly by one-step hydrothermal method. The adsorption and degradation performance of DDT was investigated in a heterogeneous advanced oxidation system (Fe@HC/PMS) formed by Fe@HC collaborated with peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The effects of Fe@HC dosage, PMS dosage and DDT initial concentration were quantitatively analyzed. The results showed that DDT removal efficiency can reach to 88.62% in 240 min under optimal conditions (4 g/L Fe@HC, 10 mM PMS, 0.5 mg/L DDT, 5.5 pH₀) in Fe@HC/PMS system. Furthermore, Fe@HC/PMS system exhibited high degradation rate and TOC removal efficiency for the removal of various organic contaminants. The influence mechanisms of Fe@HC/PMS system on DDT adsorption and degradation were proposed based on electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) testing analysis and radical quenching experiments. Based on the mechanism analysis, the influence of Fe@HC/PMS on DDT removal efficiency can be concluded in the order: Active substance indirect degradation (60.95%) > Fe@HC direct degradation (10.13%) > Fe@HC adsorption (17.54%). Among active substance indirect degradation, SO₄^•-, ^•OH, O₂^•- and ¹O₂ occupied 27.56%, 15.74%, 5.33% and 12.32%, respectively. Moreover, DDT degradation intermediates were detected by a gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) to predict DDT degradation pathways. This study provided a green progress for the reuse of biomass resources and a new way for the enhanced degradation of DDT.

Biomonitoring metals and metalloids in wild mammals: invasive versus non-invasive sampling

Heavy metal and metalloid pollution is a matter of concern in animal, human and environmental health (One Health) and also in wildlife conservation worldwide. Studying wild mammals in toxicology has been contributing significantly to our knowledge, namely to find out the most critical regions, to understand bioaccumulation and biomagnification phenomena or to evaluate their toxic effects. However, not all the animal tissues and organs provide the same information or should be interpreted in the same way. The best sample to use will depend on the objectives and conditions of the study. This review aims to compare invasive and non-invasive samples to biomonitor heavy metals, providing a brief resume of their advantages, limitations and examples of use. Further research, using a wider range of mammalian species, is required to establish what information can be obtained in biomonitoring studies that use non-invasive samples (such as hair, faeces and parasites) and/or invasive samples (such as blood, liver, kidney, bone and other organs).
