Abstract
Ischemic vascular diseases are on the rise globally, including ischemic heart diseases, ischemic cerebrovascular diseases, and ischemic peripheral arterial diseases, posing a significant threat to life. Copper is an essential element in various biological processes, copper deficiency can reduce blood vessel elasticity and increase platelet aggregation, thereby increasing the risk of ischemic vascular disease; however, excess copper ions can lead to cytotoxicity, trigger cell death, and ultimately result in vascular injury through several signaling pathways. Herein, we review the role of cuproptosis and copper deficiency implicated in ischemic injury and repair including myocardial, cerebral, and limb ischemia. We conclude with a perspective on the therapeutic opportunities and future challenges of copper biology in understanding the pathogenesis of ischemic vascular disease states.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lead (Pb) does not have any biological function in a human, and it is likely no safe level of Pb in the human body. The Pb exposure impacts are a global concern for their potential neurotoxic consequences. Despite decreasing both the environmental Pb levels and the average blood Pb levels in the survey populations, the lifetime redistribution from the tissues-stored Pb still poses neurotoxic risks from the low-level exposure in later life. The growing fetus and children hold their innate high-susceptible to these Pb-induced neurodevelopmental and neurobehavioral effects. OBJECTIVE This article aims to evaluate cumulative studies and insights on the topic of Pb neurotoxicology while assessing the emerging trends in the field. RESULTS The Pb-induced neurochemical and neuro-immunological mechanisms are likely responsible for the high-level Pb exposure with the neurodevelopmental and neurobehavioral impacts at the initial stages. Early-life Pb exposure can still produce neurodegenerative consequences in later life due to the altered epigenetic imprints and the ongoing endogenous Pb exposure. Several mechanisms contribute to the Pb-induced neurotoxic impacts, including the direct neurochemical effects, the induction of oxidative stress and inflammation through immunologic activations, and epigenetic alterations. Furthermore, the individual nutritional status, such as macro-, micro-, or antioxidant nutrients, can significantly influence the neurotoxic impacts even at low-level exposure to Pb. CONCLUSION The prevention of early-life Pb exposure is, therefore, the critical determinant for alleviating various Pb-induced neurotoxic impacts across the different age groups.

Abstract
AIM To investigate whether serum calcium and magnesium on the day of symptom onset contribute to prognosis at 1 year after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). METHODS We prospectively enrolled patients admitted < 24 h after symptom onset of primary ICH to West China Hospital between January 2012 and October 2014. Blood samples were collected at admission to determine the concentration of serum calcium and magnesium. We analyzed associations of the serum concentration of calcium and magnesium with unfavorable outcome (defined as modified Rankin scale, mRS ≥ 3) at 1 year. RESULTS We included 874 patients (mean age 59.1 ± 13.5 years, 67.6% males), of whom 470 patients had mRS ≥ 3 and 284 patients died at 1 year. Compared to patients with the highest tertile level of calcium concentration (≥ 2.29 mmol/L), patients in the lowest tertile (≤ 2.15 mmol/L) had higher odds of unfavorable outcome (odds ratio, OR 1.61, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.04-2.50, P = 0.034). The Kaplan-Meier survival curve revealed a significant difference of cumulative survival rate across calcium tertiles (log-rank P value = 0.038). There was no significant association between serum concentration of magnesium and functional outcome at 1 year. CONCLUSION A reduced serum concentration of calcium on the day-of-event was associated with unfavorable outcome at 1 year after ICH. Future studies are needed to illustrate the pathophysiological mechanism of calcium and whether calcium could be a treatment target for improving outcomes after ICH.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Certain trace elements have been associated with increased cardiovascular risk. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between serum copper (S-Cu) levels and the risk of a first event of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in a population of older adults with high cardiovascular risk. METHODS AND RESULTS We conducted a case-control study nested within the PREDIMED trial. During a median follow-up of 4.8 years, a total of 207 incident cases diagnosed with CVD were matched for sex, age, and intervention group with 436 controls. Personal interviews, reviews of medical records, and validated questionnaires were used to assess known CVD risk factors. Biological serum samples were collected annually. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analysis was used to determine S-Cu levels. Adjusted odds ratios were calculated using multivariate conditional logistic regression models. All participants had S-Cu levels within the reference values, 750 μg/L to 1450 μg/L. Among men, but not among women, the mean S-Cu concentration was higher in cases 1014.1 μg/L than in controls 959.3 μg/L; (p = 0.004). In men, the multivariable-adjusted odds ratio for CVD was 2.36 (95% CI 1.07-5.20 for the comparison of the highest vs. the lowest quartile; p for trend = 0.02), in women, it was 0.43 (95% CI 0.11-1.70; p for trend = 0.165). CONCLUSION In older Spanish men with high cardiovascular risk, a significant association was observed between high S-Cu levels, but still within the reference values, and an increased risk of a first event of CVD. Our findings suggest a sex difference in CVD risk and S-Cu levels. To confirm this relationship and to analyze the differences observed between men and women, further studies are needed.

Abstract
Stroke and acute myocardial infarction are leading causes of mortality worldwide. The latter accounts for approximately 9 million deaths annually. In turn, ischemic stroke is a significant contributor to adult physical disability globally. While reperfusion is crucial for tissue recovery, it can paradoxically exacerbate damage through oxidative stress (OS), inflammation, and cell death. Therefore, it is imperative to explore diverse approaches aimed at minimizing ischemia/reperfusion injury to enhance clinical outcomes. OS primarily arises from an excessive generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and/or decreased endogenous antioxidant potential. Natural antioxidant compounds can counteract the injury mechanisms linked to ROS. While promising preclinical results, based on monotherapies, account for protective effects against tissue injury by ROS, translating these models into human applications has yielded controversial evidence. However, since the wide spectrum of antioxidants having diverse chemical characteristics offers varied biological actions on cell signaling pathways, multitherapy has emerged as a valuable therapeutic resource. Moreover, the combination of antioxidants in multitherapy holds significant potential for synergistic effects. This study was designed with the aim of providing an updated overview of natural antioxidants suitable for preventing myocardial and cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injuries.

Abstract
Background Despite the fact that several studies have investigated the association between serum copper levels (S-Cu) and the risk of cardiovascular diseases, this relationship remains unclear. The aims of this study were to investigate the association between S-Cu and risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), including total stroke, ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, myocardial infarction and cardiovascular mortality, and identify potential sources of results heterogeneity. Methods We carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis. The selection criteria were: (1) Observational studies (cohort studies, case-control studies and hybrid studies); (2) Studies containing quantitative data about the relationship between S-Cu and risk of MACE; (3) Estimating association measures; and (4) Studies written in English, French or Spanish. Overall pooled Odds ratio (pOR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) of MACE for the highest vs. lowest S-Cu category were calculated using random-effects models. Results Sixteen studies with a total of 41,322 participants were included in the meta-analysis: 10 prospective cohort studies, 5 nested case-control studies and 1 case-control study. Comparing highest vs. lowest category, high S-Cu levels were associated with total stroke (pOR: 1.49, 95% CI 1.22-1.82; I2 = 0%, p = 0.54), myocardial infarction (pOR: 1.31, 95% CI 1.17-1.46; I2 = 0.0%, p = 0.92) and cardiovascular mortality (pOR: 1.60, 95% CI 1.39-1.86; I2 = 0.0%, p = 0.54). Subgroup analysis showed that studies with a hybrid design had higher risks for cardiovascular mortality (pOR: 3.42, 95% CI 1.98-5.92) and ischemic stroke (pOR: 1.54, 95% CI 1.30-1.83). Conclusion High S-Cu levels were associated with an increased risk of total stroke, myocardial infarction and cardiovascular mortality. Hybrid studies seems to modify the strength of the association between S-Cu and the risk of cardiovascular mortality and ischemic stroke. Abstract
Copper is a vital mineral, and an optimal amount of copper is required to support normal physiologic processes in various systems, including the cardiovascular system. Over the past few decades, copper-induced cell death, named cuproptosis, has become increasingly recognized as an important process mediating the pathogenesis and progression of cardiovascular disease (CVD), including atherosclerosis, stroke, ischemia-reperfusion injury, and heart failure. Therefore, an in-depth understanding of the regulatory mechanisms of cuproptosis in CVD may be useful for improving CVD management. Here, we review the relationship between copper homeostasis and cuproptosis-related pathways in CVD, as well as therapeutic strategies addressing copper-induced cell death in CVD.

Abstract
Zinc is one of the most abundant metal ions in the central nervous system (CNS), where it plays a crucial role in both physiological and pathological brain functions. Zinc promotes antioxidant effects, neurogenesis, and immune system responses. From neonatal brain development to the preservation and control of adult brain function, zinc is a vital homeostatic component of the CNS. Molecularly, zinc regulates gene expression with transcription factors and activates dozens of enzymes involved in neuronal metabolism. During development and in adulthood, zinc acts as a regulator of synaptic activity and neuronal plasticity at the cellular level. There are several neurological diseases that may be affected by changes in zinc status, and these include stroke, neurodegenerative diseases, traumatic brain injuries, and depression. Accordingly, zinc deficiency may result in declines in cognition and learning and an increase in oxidative stress, while zinc accumulation may lead to neurotoxicity and neuronal cell death. In this review, we explore the mechanisms of brain zinc balance, the role of zinc in neurological diseases, and strategies affecting zinc for the prevention and treatment of these diseases.

Abstract
It is well-known that serum and cellular concentrations of zinc are altered in breast cancer patients. Specifically, there are notable zinc hyper-aggregates in breast tumor cells when compared to normal mammary epithelial cells. However, the mechanisms responsible for zinc accumulation and the consequences of zinc dysregulation are poorly understood. In this review, we detailed cellular zinc regulation/dysregulation under the influence of varying levels of sex steroids and breast cancer tumorigenesis to try to better understand the intricate relationship between these factors based on our current understanding of the CmPn/CmP signaling network. We also made some efforts to propose a relationship between zinc signaling and the CmPn/CmP signaling network.

Abstract
Copper as an essential trace element is hypothesized to be involved in stroke risk. However, the evidence for associations between copper and stroke risk factors such as lipid levels has been mixed. This study aimed to examine the relationships between serum copper and lipid levels among 3425 participants aged 20 years and older from the 2011-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Data on administered questionnaires, serum copper concentrations, and lipid levels (total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL cholesterol) were used. Associations between serum copper and lipid levels were evaluated using both multivariable linear regression and logistic regression models. In the linear regression models, total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels increased with increasing copper concentrations among women. Each 1 unit (μg/dL) increase in serum copper concentrations was associated with roughly 0.11 mg/dL higher total cholesterol (95%CI: 0.04-0.18; P < 0.05) and roughly 0.09 mg/dL higher LDL cholesterol (95%CI: 0.01-0.17; P < 0.05) among women, respectively. Serum copper was positively associated with high LDL cholesterol among women, and the multivariate-adjusted OR (95% CI) for the third quartile of serum copper concentrations was 4.25 (1.15-15.77) compared with the lowest quartile. Moreover, compared with the lowest quartile, the multivariate-adjusted OR (95% CI) for the third quartile of serum copper concentrations was 1.82 (1.16-2.85) for risk of having high total cholesterol among men. No significant association between serum copper and triglycerides levels was observed. These findings suggest that copper may impact stroke health via effects on lipid levels but need to be confirmed with prospective data.

Abstract
Zinc (Zn) is found in many neuronal pathways in the brain and has implications for neuromodulation and cerebrovascular disease. However, the association between Zn levels and stroke risk remains controversial. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to explore these relationships. A systematic literature search using PubMed, EMBASE database, and Google Scholar was performed for relevant articles from inception to August 2020. Standardized mean differences (SMDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were considered the effect sizes and statistical analyses were performed using Stata 12.0. A total of 12 studies involving 1878 cases of stroke and 1754 controls were enrolled. Overall, the meta-analysis demonstrated no significant difference in Zn levels between the stroke group and control group (SMD =-0.18, 95% CI =-0.69 to 0.32, P = 0.480). Subgroup analysis showed that type of stroke had an influence on the Zn levels. A meta-analysis of nine ischemic stroke (IS) studies, which included 1645 cases and 1585 controls, revealed that the Zn levels were significantly higher in IS patients than in controls (SMD (95% CI): 0.61(0.04, 1.19), P = 0.036), but no significant association was found between Zn levels and risk of hemorrhagic stroke (P = 0.113). Egger's test indicated no significant publication bias. This meta-analysis indicates that higher Zn levels may be associated with increased risk of IS; however, these findings should be further confirmed.

Dietary Copper Intake and Risk of Stroke in Adults: A Case-Control Study Based on National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013-2018. Nutrients 2022; 14:nu14030409. Abstract
The association between dietary copper intake and the risk of stroke is unknown. We included a total of 10,550 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2013−2018. Two 24-h dietary recalls and a standard questionnaire were used to determine copper intake and stroke, respectively. We used logistic regression models to estimate the associations between dietary copper intake and the risk of stroke. The nearest-neighbor propensity score matching (PSM) with a ratio of 1:2 was used to reduce selection bias. The non-linear relationship was explored with restricted cubic splines (RCS). The correlation between copper intake and baseline characteristics was detected by the Pearson correlation coefficient. The median dietary copper intake was 1.072 mg/day (IQR = 1.42−0.799). Approximately 3.8% (399) of the participants had a history of stroke. A multivariate logistic regression analysis before and after matching showed that subjects in the higher quartile had significantly lower odds of stroke compared with subjects in the first quartile of copper intake. A stratified analysis showed that copper intake was a significant protective factor for women, individuals <65 years old, individuals with hypertension, individuals who smoke, and diabetic stroke patients. The RCS models showed an L-shaped nonlinear relationship (p for nonlinear < 0.001) between copper intake and stroke. Our results suggested that increased dietary copper intake was associated with a lower risk of stroke.

Abstract
The relationship between heavy metal(loid)s exposure and oxidative stress damage is a matter of research interest. Our study aimed to investigate the distribution patterns of the nine heavy metal(loid)s in blood of pregnant women, including four toxic heavy metal(loid)s [arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg)] and five typical heavy metal(loid)s [manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and selenium (Se)] in blood. Blood samples of 348 women were collected and their concentrations in the serum (sr) and blood cells (bc) were measured, as well as serum heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) (an oxidative stress marker). Total blood (tb) concentrations of these metal(loid)s and serum-to-blood cell concentration ratios (sr/bc) were further calculated. We found Cu mainly accumulated in the serum compared to the blood cells with Cusr/bc = 2.30, whereas Co, Se, and As evenly distributed between these two fractions. Other metal(loid)s mainly concentrated in the blood cells. Cosr, Cusr, Cubc, Mnbc, Znbc, Cdbc, Cotb, Cutb, Mntb, Zntb, Cdtb, and Cusr/bc were negatively associated with serum HO-1, whereas Assr, Asbc, Astb, Znsr/bc, Cdsr/bc, and Hgsr/bc were positively, indicating of their potential toxicity. We concluded that the distribution patterns of blood heavy metal(loid)s, in particular for Cd, Hg and Zn, which either increased in serum or decreased in blood cells, might be associated with elevated serum oxidative stress, should be considered in environmental health assessments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Despite zinc's role as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent, prospective studies relating zinc levels to ischemic stroke risk are lacking. To examine the association between serum zinc levels and incidence of ischemic stroke in a US population. METHODS Using a case-cohort study nested within the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke cohort, participants were randomly selected from the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke cohort to generate a sub-cohort (n=2346). All incident ischemic stroke cases as of September 2012 (n=660) were included, with 62 incident cases overlapping in the sub-cohort. Serum zinc levels were measured at baseline. Barlow-weighted Cox's proportional hazards regression models were used to calculate multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios and the corresponding 95% CI of ischemic stroke by serum zinc levels. RESULTS The median zinc level for the sub-cohort was 121.19 µg/dL (interquartile range, 104.86-140.39 µg/dL). Serum zinc levels were inversely associated with incidence of ischemic stroke after adjustment for potential confounders (quartile 4 versus quartile 1: hazard ratio, 0.78 [95% CI, 0.61-0.98], P=0.03 for trend). When stratified by prespecified factors (sex, race, region), only sex showed a significant modification (P=0.03 for interaction). The inverse association was more pronounced among females (quartile 4 versus quartile 1: hazard ratio, 0.58 [95% CI, 0.41-0.84], P<0.01 for trend) than males (quartile 4 versus quartile 1: hazard ratio, 1.08 [95% CI, 0.78-1.51], P=0.92 for trend). CONCLUSIONS Serum zinc concentration was inversely associated with incidence of ischemic stroke, especially among women, indicating that low zinc levels may be a risk factor for ischemic stroke.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have been associated with environmental pollutants. The scope of this study is to assess any potential relation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), their hydroxylated derivatives, and trace elements with heart failure via their direct determination in human serum of Greek citizens residing in different areas. Therefore, we analyzed 131 samples including cases (heart failure patients) and controls (healthy donors), and the respective demographic data were collected. Significantly higher concentrations (p < 0.05) were observed in cases' serum regarding most of the examined PAHs and their derivatives with phenanthrene, fluorene, and fluoranthene being the most abundant (median of >50 μg L-1). Among the examined trace elements, As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Ni, and Pb were measured at statistically higher concentrations (p < 0.05) in cases' samples, with only Cr being significantly higher in controls. The potential impact of environmental factors such as smoking and area of residence has been evaluated. Specific PAHs and trace elements could be possibly related with heart failure development. Atmospheric degradation and smoking habit appeared to have a significant impact on the analytes' serum concentrations. PCA-logistic regression analysis could possibly reveal common mechanisms among the analytes enhancing the hypothesis that they may pose a significant risk for CVD development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Oxidative stress and inflammation are conditions that are deeply involved in atherosclerosis and consequent coronary artery disease (CAD). Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the relationship among circulating antioxidant vitamins (C, A, E), copper, and other pro- or antioxidant/inflammation markers in patients with and without CAD under preventive medication. SUBJECTS AND METHODS 174 Azorean subjects symptomatic for CAD (age 56 ± 9y; 68 % men) submitted to coronary angiography were split into 2 groups: one formed by CAD patients (≥50 % stenosis in at least one major coronary vessel) and the other by non-CAD patients (<50 % stenosis). Both groups were age-, sex- and BMI-matched. Plasma levels of vitamins or copper were measured by HPLC and AAS, respectively. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS Lower vitamin C levels were observed in CAD patients (mainly in women, who exhibited a high rate of diabetes mellitus) as compared to the non-CAD ones. Also, CAD patients (mainly men) exhibited significantly higher concentrations of plasma copper than their non-CAD counterparts (1.17 ± 0.3 mg/L vs. 1.09 ± 0.3 mg/L, p = 0.030). In bivariate analysis, plasma copper levels were positively associated with serum LDL-cholesterol (r=0.22; p = 0.004) and chiefly with C-reactive protein (r=0.40; p < 0.001). Furthermore, they were significantly lower in recurrent vs. non recurrent CAD patients (1.07±0.2 vs. 1.24±0.3 mg/L, p = 0.004). ROC analysis showed that plasma copper, whenever >1.06 mg/L, was an independent risk factor for CAD in primary prevention for men, which suggests that its levels can fluctuate with medical therapy (such as anti-inflammatory), thus indicating that copper is not a reliable marker for CAD. Moreover, plasma copper concentration was not associated with CAD severity. Yet, results do suggest that, even within its reference concentration range, it could be useful as an acute inflammation marker in CAD management.

Abstract
Normal or diseased conditions that alter the brain's requirement for oxygen and nutrients via alterations to neurovascular coupling have an impact on the level of the neurovascular unit; comprising neuronal, glial and vascular components. The communications between the components of the neurovascular unit are precise and accurate for its functions; hence a minute disturbance can result in neurovascular dysfunction. Heavy metals such as cadmium, mercury, and lead have been identified to increase the vulnerability of the neurovascular unit to damage. This review examines the role of heavy metals in neurovascular dysfunctions and the possible mechanisms by which these metals act. Risk factors ranging from lifestyle, environment, genetics, infections, and physiologic ageing involved in neurological dysfunctions were highlighted, while stroke was discussed as the prevalent consequence of neurovascular dysfunctions. Furthermore, the role of these heavy metals in the pathogenesis of stroke consequently pinpoints the importance of understanding the mechanisms of neurovascular damage in a bid to curb the occurrence of neurovascular dysfunctions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Uncertainty remains regarding the association between the risk of stroke and plasma copper levels in population with copper mostly in normal range due to limited data. We examined the association between baseline plasma copper and risk of first stroke in Chinese community-dwelling population. METHODS We conducted a nested case control study from 'H-type Hypertension and Stroke Prevention and Control Project'. A total of 1255 first stroke cases and 1255 controls matched for age, sex and study site were included in the analysis. Conditional logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the association between plasma copper and first stroke. RESULTS The overall mean of copper was 15.90 (2.66) μmol/L. In total, 94.26% participants' copper concentration was in the normal range by Mayo Clinic laboratory reference values. Smoothing curve showed that the associations of plasma copper with first stroke and its subtypes were linear. Each standard deviation (SD) increment of plasma copper was independently and positively associated with risk of first stroke [odds ratio (OR): 1.17, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.07-1.28]. The multivariable ORs with 95% CIs for total stroke, ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke in the highest versus the lowest quartile of plasma copper were 1.49 (1.16-1.90; P-trend = 0.001), 1.46 (1.12-1.92; P-trend = 0.004) and 2.05 (0.95-4.38; P-trend = 0.050), respectively. CONCLUSIONS Baseline plasma copper was positively associated with risk of first ischemic stroke in an approximately linear fashion among Chinese community population (80.32% hypertensives), although their copper levels were mostly within the normal range according to current reference values. Our findings warrant additional investigation.

Abstract
Zinc is an essential trace element for human health and plays a fundamental role in metabolic, immunological and many other biological processes. The effects of zinc are based on the intra- and extracellular regulatory function of the zinc ion (Zn2+) and its interactions with proteins. The regulation of cellular zinc homeostasis takes place via a complex network of metal transporters and buffering systems that react to changes in the availability of zinc in nutrition, chronic diseases, infections and many other processes. Zinc deficiency is associated with impairment of numerous metabolic processes, reduced resistance to infections due to impaired immune functions, changes in skin and its appendages and disorders of wound healing and haemostasis. While ischemic heart attacks (myocardial infarction) occur more frequently with meat-based normal diets, haemorrhagic strokes are more frequently observed with vegetarian/vegan diets. The causes are discussed as deficiencies of various micronutrients, such as vitamin B12, vitamin D, various amino acids and also zinc. In the present review, after a description of the functions of zinc and its resorption, a discussion of daily food intake will follow, with a special focus on the importance of food composition and preparation for the zinc balance. The close interrelationships between proteins, especially albumin and zinc will be discussed. Finally, the possible causes and consequences of a zinc deficiency on the blood vessels and blood coagulation are considered.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Stroke is the main cause of mortality and long-term disability in the general population. With the increased application of metals in industries and human environment, lead has become a health hazard. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between the blood concentration of lead and the incidence of acute stroke. MATERIALS AND METHODS We performed this study during 2016-17 at Vali-e-Asr Hospital in Birjand, Iran, among 80 ischemic stroke patients visiting the hospital and 80 healthy gender- and age-matched controls. Blood lead concentration (BLC) was measured using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. RESULTS BLC medians in the case and control groups were 20.65 [5.37-34.87] μg/dL and 2.65 [1.75-13.85] μg/dL, respectively (p < 0.05). The case group had significantly lower mean levels of HDL and phosphors, whereas the mean levels of white blood cells and uric acid were higher in this group. After adjusting for lipid profile and fasting blood sugar, multiple logistic regression indicated that the serum levels of uric acid and BLC were significant for predicting ischemic stroke. It is estimated that the odds ratio of ischemic stroke increases by 1.04 per 1 μg/dl increase in BLC. CONCLUSION This study showed that lead can be a risk factor for ischemic stroke. Since it does not have any beneficial effects on the health of individuals, screening serum concentrations of lead can be considered as a preventive strategy for those at risk of stroke.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and environmental degradation are leading global health problems of our time. Recent studies have linked exposure to heavy metals to the risks of CVD and diabetes, particularly in populations from low- and middle-income countries, where concomitant rapid development occurs. In this review, we 1) assessed the totality, quantity, and consistency of the available epidemiological studies, linking heavy metal exposures to the risk of CVD (including stroke and coronary heart disease); 2) discussed the potential biological mechanisms underlying some tantalizing observations in humans; and 3) identified gaps in our knowledge base that must be investigated in future work. An accumulating body of evidence from both experimental and observational studies implicates exposure to heavy metals, in a dose-response manner, in the increased risk of CVD. The limitations of most existing studies include insufficient statistical power, lack of comprehensive assessment of exposure, and cross-sectional design. Given the widespread exposure to heavy metals, an urgent need has emerged to investigate these putative associations of environmental exposures, either independently or jointly, with incident CVD outcomes prospectively in well-characterized cohorts of diverse populations, and to determine potential strategies to prevent and control the impacts of heavy metal exposure on the cardiometabolic health outcomes of individuals and populations.

Concentrations of As and other trace elements were measured in groundwater, rice, hair, urine, and blood samples of people consuming As-contaminated groundwater in a village of Ha Nam province, northern Vietnam to understand the recent status of contamination and assess the possible risks of human exposure. Elevated concentrations of As in groundwater were still observed, exceeding the WHO guideline value in most of the tube wells investigated. Significant positive correlations between As concentrations in groundwater and human samples (hair and urine) were observed. Arsenic concentrations in human and hair appeared to be related to the groundwater usage habit, with higher levels found in drinking group than those in the washing group. Significant good correlations were also encountered between cumulative intakes of As, Mn, and Ba through groundwater consumption and hair concentrations. All these results indicate the chronic exposure to As and some other elements such as Mn and Ba. The total intakes of As, Mn, and Ba through rice and groundwater consumption were estimated to be ranged from 80-836, 49.3-1850, and 311-97100 µg/day, respectively. The daily intakes of As of the study area ranged from 1.6-16.7 µg/kg body wt./day, mean: 7.15 µg/kg body wt./day, in which about 85% of the subjects were above the provisional tolerable daily intake proposed by WHO.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To explore the risk factors for stroke by using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). METHODS A total of 19384 cases from the NHANES database during 2005 to 2016 were included in this study, of which 661 were stroke patients, with a weighted prevalence of 2.60%. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to analyze possible risk factors for stroke. RESULTS The risk of stroke was 1.839 times higher in subjects with diabetes than in those without diabetes, P<0.001. An average increase of 1 ug/dL in blood lead was associated with a 1.082-fold increase in stroke risk, P<0.001. Subjects with mild-, moderate-, and moderately severe or severe depression had a 1.567-fold, 1.836-fold, and 3.279-fold higher risk than those without depression respectively, P<0.001. The risk of stroke in subjects with sleep disorders was 1.622 times higher than those without sleep disorders, P<0.001. CONCLUSIONS Patients with diabetes, lower household income (<$2000), PHQ-9 depression score (5-27), trouble sleep, older age and higher concentration of blood lead are associated with a higher risk of stroke.

Abstract
Background and Purpose—
We aimed to examine the relation of baseline plasma zinc with the risk of first stroke and investigate any possible effect modifiers in hypertensive patients.
Methods—
The study population was drawn from the CSPPT (China Stroke Primary Prevention Trial), using a nested case-control design, including 599 first stroke cases and 599 matched controls.
Results—
Compared with participants with baseline plasma zinc <106.9 μg/dL (median), a significantly lower risk of first hemorrhagic stroke was found in those with plasma zinc ≥106.9 μg/dL (multivariate-adjusted odds ratio, 0.45; 95% CI, 0.21–0.94). Furthermore, the inverse plasma zinc-first hemorrhagic stroke association was significantly stronger in participants with body mass index ≥25.0 kg/m

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies indicated that trace elements may play an important role in cardiovascular diseases. However, data concerning the association between blood copper and the risk of stroke are limited. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between plasma copper and the risk of first stroke, and examine any possible effect modifiers in hypertensive patients. METHODS We conducted a nested case-control study, using data from the China Stroke Primary Prevention Trial. Hypertension is defined as systolic blood pressure ≥ 140 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressure ≥ 90 mm Hg, or taking antihypertensive medication. A total of 618 first stroke cases and 618 controls matched for age, sex, treatment group, and study site were included in this study. The crude and adjusted risks of first stroke were estimated by ORs and 95% CIs using conditional logistic regression, without or with adjusting for pertinent covariates, respectively. RESULTS There were significant positive associations of plasma copper with risk of first stroke (per SD increment-OR: 1.20; 95% CI: 1.03, 1.39) and first ischemic stroke (OR: 1.26; 95% CI: 1.07, 1.50). When plasma copper was categorized in quartiles, significantly higher risks of first stroke (OR: 1.72; 95% CI: 1.12, 2.65) and first ischemic stroke (OR: 1.91; 95% CI: 1.18, 3.11) were found in participants in quartile 4 (≥ 117.0 μg/dL) than in those in quartile 1 (< 91.2 μg/dL). Furthermore, the plasma copper-first stroke association was significantly stronger in participants with higher BMI (< 25.0 compared with ≥ 25.0 kg/m2, P-interaction = 0.024). However, there was no significant association between plasma copper and first hemorrhagic stroke. CONCLUSIONS In Chinese hypertensive patients, there was a significant positive association between baseline plasma copper and the risk of first stroke, especially among those with higher BMI.This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT00794885.

Abstract
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection can interfere with the absorption of most elements, and the variations of some element levels are related to the incidence of gastric cancer. However, there have been conflicting results concerning the influence of H. pylori infection on serum element levels. The present study aimed to compare the serum element concentrations of H. pylori-infected local residents with uninfected residents from Lujiang County with high gastric cancer risk in Eastern China. We used data and serum samples from the H. pylori screening-survey program which was a cross-sectional study. We took 155 samples randomly from the screening survey, identified 74 H. pylori-positive residents and 81 H. pylori-negative residents by a serological test. The serum concentrations of 15 elements (calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, selenium, copper, molybdenum, chromium, cobalt, nickel, lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic, and aluminum) were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Serum cobalt was found at higher levels in the H. pylori-infected residents than the H. pylori-uninfected residents (0.246 vs 0.205 μg/L, P = 0.022), but no statistically significant differences in the serum levels of other elements were found. This is the first study to report the serum concentrations of 15 elements and their relationships with the infection status of H. pylori among local residents from Lujiang County with high gastric cancer risk. Although the International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified cobalt and other soluble cobalt salts as possibly carcinogenic to human beings, our results may provide a clue to the relationships between cobalt, H. pylori, and gastric cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite a multitude of studies, etiology of primary chronic telogen effluvium (TE) remains incompletely understood. Essential heavy metals are associated with beneficial effects in humans as well as in other living organisms. However, they may lead to toxic effects when the exposure exceeds the higher tolerable limits. We wanted to assess the heavy metal and trace element levels in patients with chronic TE. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 40 subjects with chronic TE were included in the study, and 30 healthy women served as control. General and dermatological examinations were taken up in all individuals. Those patients with positive hair pull test were evaluated with the help of a trichogram. The presence of >20% telogen hair as documented by trichogram was a requirement for the study inclusion. UNICAM-929 spectrophotometry device was used for determining serum trace element and heavy metal concentrations. RESULTS In spite of an absence of significant differences in terms of average Zn concentration, weight, or height between patients and controls, significant differences were noted for Cd, Fe, Mg, Mn, Pb, Co, and Cu (P <0.05). CONCLUSION Our results suggest that heavy metals may play a causative role in the development of chronic TE. However, contrary to previous reports, zinc did not appear to play an important etiological role, while these patients had elevated serum iron levels.

Abstract
Background Stroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide. The role of zinc as a new predictor of stroke was considered. Methods This prospective study was conducted in Ayatollah Rouhani Hospital within a year on 100 stroke and 100 control patients. Findings The difference in zinc serum level in two groups was significant (deficiency: 3 (3%) in patients versus 20 (20%) in control group, normal: 25 (25%) versus 54 (54%), and increased level: 72 (72%) versus 26 (26%); p < 0.001). Difference in zinc serum levels was statistically significant with ischemic heart disease (deficiency: 0 cases (0%), normal: 8 cases (24%), increased level: 24 cases (75%), p = 0.003). Increases in zinc serum level were significantly correlated with the frequency of hemorrhagic and ischemic patients (deficiency: 3 (3.3%) hemorrhagic versus 0 (0%) ischemic; normal: 19 (21%) versus 6 (60%), increased level: 68 (75.6%) versus 4 (40%); p = 0.025). Regression logistics showed that ischemic heart disease (p < 0.001; OR = 28.29, %95 CI: 5.53; 144.87), hyperlipidemia (p < 0.001; OR = 0.26, %95 CI: 0.12; 0.56), and zinc serum level (p < 0.001, OR = 15.53, %95 CI: 4.03; 59.83) each had a significant role. Conclusions Babol stroke patients are prone to increased zinc serum level as a new parameter. Ischemic heart disease, increased levels of zinc, and hyperlipidemia were found to be probable predictor factors for stroke in Babol.

Abstract
The primary objective of the study is investigation of the association between trace elements status and hemostasis, lipid spectrum and inflammatory markers in acute ischemic stroke (AIS). A total of 30 men suffering from AIS and 30 healthy controls were involved in the current survey. Blood count, serum lipid spectrum, complement components C4 and C3a, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), S100B protein, NR2 antibodies (NR2Ab), and total antioxidant status (TAS), as well as plasma fibrinogen, and D-dimer levels and activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) were assessed. Serum trace elements were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. AIS patients were characterized by significantly increased fibrinogen, D-dimer, TG, C3a, C4, NR2Ab, and VEGF levels. The leukocyte count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and serum atherogenic index were also increased in stroke patients. Oppositely, TAS and APTT values, bleeding and blood coagulation time were decreased. AIS patients were characterized by significantly decreased serum Fe and Co concentrations, whereas the level of Cu, I, Li, Mn, Se, Zn, As, Pb, Ni, and especially V and B in serum was significantly increased. Serum V and B tightly correlated with the procoagulant state and inflammatory markers. Multiple regression analysis revealed a significant inverse association between serum Se levels and stroke markers after adjustment for covariates. Therefore, it is hypothesized that elements like vanadium and boron may be closely involved in stroke pathogenesis by modulation of hemostasis and inflammation, whereas the observed increase in Se levels may be considered as a compensatory reaction.

Abstract
Association of a high-serum ferritin with poor outcome showed that iron might play a detrimental role in the brain after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). Here, we investigated changes in serum iron, ferritin, transferrin (Tf) and ceruloplasmin (CP) in patients with ICH (n = 100) at day 1 (admission), 3, 7, 14 and 21 and those in control subjects (n = 75). The hematoma and edema volumes were also determined in ICH-patients on admission and at day 3. The Modified Rankin Scale (mRS) of 59 patients was ≥3 (poor outcome) and 41 < 3 (good outcome) at day 90. Serum ferritin was significantly higher and serum iron and Tf markedly lower in patients with poor-outcome than the corresponding values in patients with good-outcome at day 1 to 7 and those in the controls. There was a significant positive correlation between serum ferritin and relative edema volume or ratio at day 1 and 3 and hematoma volume at day 1 (n = 28), and a negative correlation between serum iron or Tf and hematoma volume at day 1 (n = 100). We concluded that not only increased serum ferritin but also reduced serum iron and Tf are associated with outcome as well as hematoma volume.

Abstract
Magnesium, the second and fourth most abundant cation in the intracellular compartment and whole body, respectively, is of great physiologic importance. Magnesium exists as bound and free ionized forms depending on temperature, pH, ionic strength, and competing ions. Free magnesium participates in many biochemical processes and is most commonly measured by ion-selective electrode. This analytical approach is problematic because complete selectivity is not possible due to competition with other ions, i.e., calcium, and pH interference. Unfortunately, many studies have focused on measurement of total magnesium rather than its free bioactive form making it difficult to correlate to disease states. This systematic literature review presents current analytical challenges in obtaining accurate and reproducible test results for magnesium.

Abstract
We assessed the levels of potentially toxic trace metals, Zinc (Zn), Lead (Pb), Manganese (Mn), Copper (Cu), Nickel (Ni), Chromium (Cr), Cobalt (Co), and Cadmium (Cd), in dust, hair, nail and serum, sampled in rural, urban and industrial areas of Punjab, Pakistan. Trace metals occurrence in all samples, in descending order, was: Zn, Pb, Mn, Cu, Cr, Ni, Co, Cd. The samples from the urban areas showed significantly higher concentration of toxic trace metals (Zn, Ni, Cr, Co, Mn, and Cd) than those from industrial (which conversely had higher levels of Pb and Cu), and than samples from rural areas. Bioaccumulation patterns showed that dust exposure is one of the major routes into human body for Cd, Pb, Co, Mn and Cr, while the burden of Zn, Cu, and Ni can be more linked to dietary sources. The concentrations of trace metals in the samples from Punjab were comparable and/or higher than those reported worldwide. In many cases, the levels of Zn, Cr, Pb, Ni and Cd in hair and nail were beyond the ATSDR threshold guideline values that may cause some serious health effects. Hazard Index (HI) calculated for trace metal concentrations in the human population of Punjab points particularly to health risks from Cd (for children in urban and industrial areas) and from Pb (for all sub-groups).

Abstract
Minerals are inorganic compounds that are essential to the support of a variety of biological functions. Understanding the range and variability of the content of these minerals in biological samples can provide insight into the relationships between mineral content and the health of individuals. In particular, abnormal mineral content may serve as an indicator of illness. The development of robust, reliable analytical methods for the determination of the mineral content of biological samples is essential to developing biological models for understanding the relationship between minerals and illnesses. This paper describes a method for the analysis of the mineral content of small volumes of serum and whole blood samples from healthy individuals. Interday and intraday precision for the mineral content of the blood (250 μL) and serum (250 μL) samples was measured for eight essential minerals--sodium (Na), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), and selenium (Se)--by plasma spectrometric methods and ranged from 0.635 to 10.1% relative standard deviation (RSD) for serum and 0.348-5.98% for whole blood. A comparison of the determined ranges for ten serum samples and six whole blood samples provided good agreement with literature reference ranges. The results demonstrate that the digestion and analysis methods can be used to reliably measure the content of these minerals and potentially of other minerals.
