Removal of Cadmium from Contaminated Groundwater Using a Novel Silicon/Aluminum Nanomaterial: An Experimental Study

The effect of different amendments on Cd availability and bacterial community after three-year consecutive application in Cd-contaminated paddy soils

In situ immobilization is a widely used measure for passivating Cd-contaminated soils. Amendments need to be continuously applied to achieve stable remediation effects. However, few studies have evaluated the impact of consecutive application of amendments on soil health and the microecological environment. A field experiment was conducted in a Cd-contaminated paddy (available Cd concentration 0.40 mg kg-1) on the Chengdu Plain to investigate the changes in soil Cd availability and response characteristics of soil bacterial communities after consecutive application of rice straw biochar (SW), fly ash (FM) and marble powder (YH) amendments from 2018 to 2020. Compared with control treatment without amendments (CK), soil pH increased by 0.6, 0.5 and 1.5 under SW, FM and YH amendments, respectively, and the soil available Cd concentration decreased by 10.71%, 21.42% and 25.00%, respectively. The Cd concentration in rice grain was less than 0.2 mg kg-1 under YH amendment, which was within the Chinese Contaminant Limit in Food of National Food Safety Standards (GB2762-2022) in the second and third years. The three amendments had different effects on the transformation of Cd fractions in soil, which may be relevant to the specific bacterial communities shaped under different treatments. The proportion of Fe-Mn oxide-bound fraction Cd (OX-Cd) increased by 11% under YH treatment, which may be due to the promotion of Fe(III) and Cd binding by some enriched iron-oxidizing bacteria, such as Lysobacter, uncultured_Pelobacter sp. and Sulfurifusis. Candidatus_Tenderia and Sideroxydans were enriched under SW and FM amendments, respectively, and were likely beneficial for reducing Cd availability in soil through Cd immobilization. These results revealed the significance of the bacterial community in soil Cd immobilization after consecutive application of amendments and highlighted the potential of applying YH amendment to ensure the safe production of rice in Cd-contaminated soil.

Adverse health and environmental outcomes of sewage treatment plant on surrounding groundwater with emphasis on some mitigation recommendations

Water quality deterioration hinders economic and social development in developing countries that are facing freshwater security and shortages. Based on the collection of 29 water samples, this study focused on the relationship between sewage treatment plant and groundwater system surrounding it using multidisciplinary approach that combines the characterization of groundwater system and its connection with surrounding canal and drains, using chemical and isotopic characterization revealing that there is a direct relation between the surface water system and surrounding groundwater system. About 58% of the groundwater samples and all surface water samples in the investigated area are threatened by high concentrations of trace elements. The multivariate statistical analysis elucidates that anthropogenic effect and fertilizers sewage contamination are the main causes of groundwater pollution. Nearly, 31% and 11.5% of groundwater samples were posing oral chronic non-carcinogenic health risk and dermal chronic risk for adult, respectively, while all surface water samples were posing oral chronic non-carcinogenic health risk, with no dermal hazard. The uncharged species of Fe and Al are expected to be more mobile in groundwater because they would not be attracted to the surface charge of minerals. Inorganic ligands (HCO₃^-, SO₄^2-, Cl^-, and NO₃^-) act as nucleation centers that were linked with those trace elements creating new species with higher solubility degree in water that are transported away randomly for long distances in the water path.

Adsorption of nitrophenol onto a novel Fe3O4-κ-carrageenan/MIL-125(Ti) composite: process optimization, isotherms, kinetics, and mechanism

Water pollution is a dreadful affair that has incessantly aggravated, exposing our planet to danger. In particular, the persistent nitro aromatic compound like nitrophenols causes anxiety to the researchers due to their hazardous impacts, excessive usage, and removal difficulty. For this purpose, a novel multi-featured composite was constructed based on κ-Carrageenan (κ-Carr), MOF (MIL-125(Ti)), and magnetic Fe3O4 for efficient adsorptive removal of o-nitrophenol (o-NP). Interestingly, BET measurements revealed the high surface area of Fe3O4-κ-Carr/MIL-125(Ti) of about 163.27 m2/g, while VSM showed its excellent magnetic property (20.34 emu/g). The comparison study pointed out the synergistic effect between Fe3O4, κ-Carr, and MIL-125(Ti), forming a composite with an excellent adsorption performance toward o-NP. The adsorption data obeyed pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and Freundlich isotherm model was better fitted than Langmuir and Temkin. Furthermore, Langmuir verified the supreme adsorption capacity of o-NP onto Fe3O4-κ-Carr/MIL-125(Ti) since the computed qmax reached 320.26 mg/g at pH 6 and 25 °C. Furthermore, the XPS results postulated that the adsorption mechanism pf o-NP proceeded via H-bonding, π-π interaction, and electron donor-acceptor interactions. Interestingly, Fe3O4-κ-Carr/MIL-125(Ti) composite retained good adsorption characteristics after reusing for five cycles, suggesting its viable applicability as an efficient, renewable, and easy-separable adsorbent for removing nitro aromatic pollutants.

Longevity of coal waste for controlling cadmium-contaminated groundwater considering groundwater velocity

Coal waste composed of naturally occurring minerals is applicable as a reactive medium to permeable reactive barriers due to its reactivity to heavy metals. In this study, we evaluated the longevity of coal waste as PRB media to control heavy metal-contaminated groundwater considering variable groundwater velocity. Breakthrough experiments were conducted using coal waste-filled column by injecting artificial groundwater, 10 mg/L of cadmium solution. The artificial groundwater was fed to the column at different flow rates to mimic a wide range of porewater velocities in the saturated zone. The reaction between cadmium breakthrough curves was analyzed using a two-site nonequilibrium sorption model. The cadmium breakthrough curves showed a significant retardation, which increased with decreasing porewater velocity. The greater the retardation, the longer the longevity of coal waste could be expected. The greater retardation under a slower velocity environment was due to the higher fraction of equilibrium reaction. The nonequilibrium reaction parameters could be functionalized with respect to the porewater velocity. The simulation of contaminant transport using the reaction parameters could be used as a method to evaluate the longevity of the pollution-blocking material in an underground environment.

Coupled controls of the infiltration of rivers, urban activities and carbonate on trace elements in a karst groundwater system from Guiyang, Southwest China

Hydrogeochemical processes of trace elements (TEs) are of considerable significance to river water and groundwater resource assessment and utilization in the karst region. Therefore, seven TEs were analyzed to investigate their contents, spatial variations, sources, and controlling factors in Guiyang, a typical karst urban area in southwest China. The results showed that the average content of TEs in river water (e.g., As = 1.44 ± 0.47 μg/L andCo = 0.15 ± 0.06 μg/L) was higher than that of groundwater (e.g., As = 0.51 ± 0.42 μg/L andCo = 0.09 ± 0.05 μg/L). The types of groundwater samples were dominated by Ca/Mg-HCO₃ and Ca/Mg-Cl types, while those of the river water samples were Ca-Cl and Ca/Mg-Cl types. Principal component analysis (PCA) and correlation analysis (CA) analyses indicated that As and Mn in the groundwater of the study area were related to river infiltration. The end-member analysis further revealed that river infiltration (As = 0.86-1.81 μg/L, Cl/SO₄^2- = 0.62-0.89) and urban activities (As = 0.21-0.32 μg/L, Cl/SO₄^2- = 0.51-0.89) were two main controlling factors of TEs (e.g., As, Co, and Mn) in the study area. In addition, the ion ratios in river and groundwater samples indicated that the weathering of carbonates was also an important control on the hydrogeochemistry of TEs (e.g., Fe and Mn) in Guiyang waters. This study showed that the trace element (TE) contents of groundwater in the Guiyang area were greatly associated with urban input and river recharge, and provided a new perspective for understanding the geochemical behavior of TEs in urban surface and groundwater bodies, which will help the protection of groundwater in the karst areas of southwest China.

Adsorption behavior of aged polybutylece terephthalate microplastics coexisting with Cd(II)-tetracycline

Microplastics (MPs) are one of the emerging classes of pollutants that can be infiltrated into any aqueous solutions from disposed toxic metals and antibiotics, further exacerbating the potential biotoxicity of MPs. However, the research on the interaction between MPs and various pollutants is limited. Therefore, in this study, the changes in toxicity of polybutylece terephthalate (PBT) MPs were assessed following adsorption of heavy metals and antibiotics. The adsorption behavior of Cd(II) and tetracycline (TC) on ultraviolet (UV) light-aged PBT was investigated. The results demonstrated that the Cd(II) adsorption behavior could be described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isothermal models, while the TC adsorption behavior has well fitted using Elovich and Sips models. The whole adsorption process occurred via either external diffusion or internal diffusion. The interactions between aged PBT and pollutants were evaluated under different environmental conditions, such as solution pH and the concentrations of dissolved organic matter and cations. The amounts of Cd(II) and TC adsorbed were higher in the competitive systems than the single solution, which might attribute to the formation of Cd(II)-TC complexes and aged PBT functional group changes. The results of two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) describes the sequence of functional group transformation during the uptake of Cd(II)-TC by aged PBT in binary systems. These findings identify a strong interaction between aged PBT and contaminants, establishing the potential fate of aged MPs under natural aquatic environment conditions.

Remediation of cadmium contaminated soil by modified gangue material: Characterization, performance and mechanisms

Nowadays, remediation of soil contaminated with potentially toxic metal is a great international concern. In this study, a novel modified gangue material (MGE) is synthesized from coal gangue (GE) through a low-temperature assisted with alkali roasting method, and is applied to the immobilization of cadmium (Cd²⁺) in contaminated soil. The various instruments (SEM-EDS, FTIR, XRD, TGA, and XPS) are employed to investigate the changes of microstructure and function of GE before and after the modification. The results showed that a large number of active groups (Si-O, Al-O, Fe-O, -OH, -CO, and -COOH) are observed on the surface of MGE, which is conducive to the removal of Cd²⁺. Besides, the adsorption kinetics, and isotherm models are introduced to analyze the potential adsorption mechanism, which suggesting that the adsorption behavior can be well fitted by pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models. The potential mechanisms of MGE include the ion exchange, complexation, electronic attraction, and precipitation. According to the pot experiment, the application of MGE can significantly improve the growth of pakchoi, and increase the pH of soils. Meanwhile, the content of available Cd²⁺ is reduced in the treatment with MGE, by a factor of 14.2%-29.8%. Correspondingly, the content of Cd²⁺ in different parts of pakchoi is also decreased. The study shows that the MGE can be strongly recommended as an efficient and safe amendment to stabilize Cd²⁺ in contaminated soil.

Hydrogeochemical characteristics and risk evaluation of potential toxic elements in groundwater from Shanmughanadhi, Tamilnadu, India

Hydrogeochemical and Health Risk Assessments of trace elements are integral to groundwater resource assessment, utilization, and human health. Investigation of groundwater chemistry and trace elemental impact on local inhabitants were attempted in Shanmuganadhi basin, Tamilnadu, India. About 60 groundwater samples were collected during the pre-monsoon period and analyzed for hydrochemical composition, including major and trace elements (Fe, Cr, Ni, Cu Pb, Mn, and As) to isolate chemical characteristics and human health risk assessment. Groundwater geochemistry is prejudiced by geochemical reactions uniting cation exchange, dissolution and precipitation, adsorption, and anthropogenic contributions. About thirty-two percent of groundwater samples recorded higher F^-(>1.5 mg/L) than the prescribed limit suggests sources from rock weathering and silicate dissolution. Nitrates (>45.0 mg/L) suggest sources from agricultural influences. Water types indicate alkalis (Na⁺ + K⁺) dominating alkali earth (Ca²⁺ - Mg²⁺) and strong acids (Cl^- and SO₄^2-) looming weak acid (CO₃^2- and HCO₃^-) irrespective of water samples. The geochemical stability diagram suggests precipitation of silica, carbonate, and magnesium and dissolution of sulphate minerals along the groundwater flow path. Significant correlation between major ions and trace elements (Pb, Mn, Ni, and Cu) suggests origin from rock weathering, human impacts, and cultivation practices. Non-carcinogenic human risk for trace elements was higher in children compared with adults via ingestion and dermal exposure. The carcinogenic result suggests that Cr in CHK (7.1 × 10^-2) and HBG (4.3 × 10^-2) have the most excellent chance of cancer risk. The environmental risk category attempted using Comprehensive risk factor (CRI) suggests Pb (3.2-CHK, 2.6-HBG) with potential cancer risk. The comprehensive evaluation index recommends environmental damage between mild to moderate, indicating continuous exposure of traceable elements might result in cancer cause to the inhabitants. The study suggests water quality seems to be prejudiced by various geological and anthropogenic causes and endorses counteractive measures and proper execution of existing laws to protect groundwater resources in the study area.

Triazine-Based Functionalized Activated Carbon Prepared from Water Hyacinth for the Removal of Hg2+, Pb2+, and Cd2+ Ions from Water

A novel chelating adsorbent, based on the functionalization of activated carbon (AC) derived from water hyacinth (WH) with melamine thiourea (MT) to form melamine thiourea-modified activated carbon (MT-MAC), is used for the effective removal of Hg²⁺, Pb²⁺, and Cd²⁺ from aqueous solution. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) theory confirm the successful functionalization of AC with the melamine thiourea chelating ligand through the amidation reaction between the carboxyl groups of oxidized activated carbon (OAC) and the amino groups of melamine thiourea (MT) in the presence of dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCC) as a coupling agent. The prepared MT-MAC exhibited extensive potential for the adsorption of the toxic metal ions Hg²⁺, Pb²⁺, and Cd²⁺ from wastewater. The MT-MAC showed high capacities for the adsorption of Hg²⁺ (292.6 mg·g^-1), Pb²⁺ (237.4 mg·g^-1), and Cd²⁺ (97.9 mg·g^-1) from aqueous solution. Additionally, 100% removal efficiency of Hg²⁺ at pH 5.5 was observed at very low initial concentrations (25-1000 ppb).The experimental sorption data could be fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm model, suggesting a monolayer adsorption behavior. The kinetic data of the chemisorption mechanism realized by the melamine thiourea groups grafted onto the activated carbon surface have a perfect match with the pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetic model. In a mixed solution of metal ions containing 50 ppm of each ion, MT-MAC showed a removal of 97.0% Hg²⁺, 68% Pb²⁺, 45.0% Cd²⁺, 17.0% Cu²⁺, 7.0% Ni²⁺, and 5.0% Zn²⁺. Consequently, MT-MAC has exceptional selectivity for Hg²⁺ ions from the mixed metal ion solutions. The MT-MAC adsorbent showed high stability even after three adsorption-desorption cycles. According to the results obtained, the use of the MT-MAC adsorbent for the adsorption of Pb²⁺, Hg²⁺, and Cd²⁺ metal ions from polluted water is promising.

Environmental contamination by heavy metals and associated human health risk assessment: a case study of surface water in Gomti River Basin, India

The aim of the present study was to assess the status of heavy metal contamination and health risks associated with the use of water from River Gomti by millions of people. The value of the degree of contamination (C_d) was found to be '11.93', signifying 'high' risk levels due to heavy metal contamination in River Gomti across an approximate stretch of 61 km including upstream, midstream, and downstream locations of Lucknow city. The potential sources of heavy metal pollution in River Gomti include both sewage and industrial effluents, being transported by drains which overflow into the river. The heavy metals were found to have low mobility owing to the 'near neutral' pH of river water. The findings from the human health risk assessment revealed that the hazard index associated with non-carcinogenic risks exceeded the permissible limits at all sampling stations. The highest health risk was found at Bharwara sewage treatment plant discharge point, downstream of Lucknow city signifying the elevated levels of heavy metal in the river water post treatment from Bharwara STP. The results of carcinogenic risk assessment suggested that children were more susceptible to health risks, and immediate remedial measures are required to control the elevated levels of heavy metals at all the sampling stations.

Groundwater Pollution Source Identification and Apportionment Using PMF and PCA-APCS-MLR Receptor Models in Tongchuan City, China

Potential sources of groundwater pollution in Tongchuan City, China, were qualitatively identified based on 14 key water quality indicators of 59 groundwater samples, and the contribution of each source to groundwater quality was quantitatively evaluated. Groundwater pollution sources were analyzed using PMF and PCA-APCS-MLR models, and their applicability in groundwater pollution assessment in Tongchuan City was tested. Results indicate that both models identified four sources of groundwater contamination. Natural evolution was the main cause of groundwater pollution in the study area, followed by the coal industry, agriculture, and urbanization. Although the spatial distribution of pollution sources in the two models differed, the urbanized area to the east of the study area was more severely affected by sewage discharge, the west was more obviously affected by the coal industry, and the north was mainly polluted by agriculture. Both of the fitting results of the two models are good, but R² values obtained by the PMF model (0.4440-0.9991) were generally higher than those obtained by the PCA-APCS-MLR model (0.5180-0.9530), indicating that PMF model results were more accurate than the PCA-APCS-MLR model.

Hydrogeochemical Processes Governing Uranium Mobility: Inferences from the Anthropogenically Disturbed, Semi-arid Region of India

Khetri Copper Belt, Rajasthan, is anthropogenically active and geologically belongs to the Delhi super-group. A study was designed to understand the geochemical processes controlling the elemental mobility in the groundwater. Sampling sites were divided into three zones, i.e. copper, quartzite and granite mine zones depending on the type of mineral excavated. A total of 32 representative groundwater samples were collected and analysed for heavy metals and radionuclide (U) using ICP-MS. A maximum U concentration (average 87 µgL^-1) is observed in the quartzite mine zone, and minimum (average 13 µgL^-1) is found in the copper mine zone samples. A high concentration of U (maximum of 430 µgL^-1) in groundwater is attributed to mineral dissolution due to geogenic and anthropogenic activities. Despite the presence of Jaspura and Gothra granitoid in the copper mine zone, the abundance of U is low suggesting the scavenging of U by sulphides or iron oxides. Additionally, at the confluence of two geological groups, Fe concentration is found high with a low concentration of U which further confirms scavenging of U. It is evident from the results that in the absence of iron-bearing sulphides, U concentration in groundwater would be very high compared to the current concentration. It also indicates low concentration of U in the copper mine zone is due to dissolution of Fe sulphide-rich waste. The present study recommends further research to understand the feasibility of mining waste for the removal of U contamination from groundwater.

Sources and Consequences of Groundwater Contamination

Groundwater contamination is a global problem that has a significant impact on human health and ecological services. Studies reported in this special issue focus on contaminants in groundwater of geogenic and anthropogenic origin distributed over a wide geographic range, with contributions from researchers studying groundwater contamination in India, China, Pakistan, Turkey, Ethiopia, and Nigeria. Thus, this special issue reports on the latest research conducted in the eastern hemisphere on the sources and scale of groundwater contamination and the consequences for human health and the environment, as well as technologies for removing selected contaminants from groundwater. In this article, the state of the science on groundwater contamination is reviewed, and the papers published in this special issue are summarized in terms of their contributions to the literature. Finally, some key issues for advancing research on groundwater contamination are proposed.
