Microbiological study on bioremediation of 2,2′,4,4′-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) contaminated soil by agricultural waste composting

Tourmaline-enhanced bioremediation of Cd/BDE-153 co-contaminated soil: Migration, soil microorganism structure and enzyme activities

The efficient remediation of the soil co-contaminated with heavy metals and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) from electronic disassembly zones is a new challenge. Here, we screened a fungus of F. solani (F.s) can immobilize Cd and remove PBDEs. wIt combined with tourmaline enhances the remediation of co- pollutants in the soil. Furthermore, the environment risks of the enhanced technology were assessed through the amount of Cd/BDE-153 in Amaranthus tricolor L. (amaranth) migrated from soil, as well as the changes of soil microorganism communities and enzyme activities. The results showed the combined treatment of tourmaline and F.s made the removal percentage of BDE-153 in rhizosphere soil co-contaminated with BDE-153 and Cd reached 46.5%. And the weak acid extractable Cd in rhizosphere soil decreased by 33.7% compared to control group. In addition, the combined remediation technology resulted in a 32.5% (22.8%), 45.5% (37.2%), and 50.7% (38.1%) decrease in BDE-153 (Cd) content in the roots, stems, and leaves of amaranth, respectively. Tourmaline combined with F.s can significantly increase soil microorganism diversity, soil dehydrogenase and urease activities, further improving the remediation rate of Cd and BDE-153co-pollutants in soil and the biomass of amaranth. This study provides the remediation technology of soil co-contaminated with heavy metal and PBDEs and ensure the maintenance of food security.

Removal of toxic metals using iron sulfide particles: A brief overview of modifications and mechanisms

Growing mechanization has released higher concentrations of toxic metals in water and sediment, which is a critical concern for the environment and human health. Recent studies show that naturally occurring and synthetic iron sulfide particles are efficient at removing these hazardous pollutants. This review seeks to provide a concise summary of the evolution in the production of iron sulfide particles, specifically nanoparticles, through the years. This review presents an outline of the synthesis process for the most dominant forms of iron sulfide: mackinawite (FeS), pyrite (FeS2), pyrrhotite (Fe1-x S), and greigite (Fe3S4). The review confirms that both natural forms of iron sulfide and modified forms of iron sulfide are highly effective at removing different heavy metals and metalloids from water. Concurrently, this review reveals the interaction mechanism between toxic metals and iron sulfide, along with the impact of conditions for remedy and rectification. None the less, modifications and future investigations into the synthesis of novel iron sulfides, their use to adsorb diverse environmental pollutants, and their fate after injection into polluted aquifers, remain crucial to maximizing pollution control.

Roles and significance of chelating agents for potentially toxic elements (PTEs) phytoremediation in soil: A review

Phytoremediation is a biological remediation technique known for low-cost technology and environmentally friendly approach, which employs plants to extract, stabilise, and transform various compounds, such as potentially toxic elements (PTEs), in the soil or water. Recent developments in utilising chelating agents soil remediation have led to a renewed interest in chelate-induced phytoremediation. This review article summarises the roles of various chelating agents and the mechanisms of chelate-induced phytoremediation. This paper also discusses the recent findings on the impacts of chelating agents on PTEs uptake and plant growth and development in phytoremediation. It was found that the chelating agents have increased the rate of metal absorption and translocation up to 45% from roots to the aboveground plant parts during PTEs phytoremediation. Besides, it was also explored that the plants may experience some phytotoxicity after adding chelating agents to the soil. However, due to the leaching potential of synthetic chelating agents, the use of organic chelants have been explored to be used in PTEs phytoremediation. Finally, this paper also presents comprehensive insights on the significance of using chelating agents through SWOT analysis to discuss the advantages and limitations of chelate-induced phytoremediation.

Influence of Tubificidae Limnodrilus and electron acceptors on the environmental fate of BDE-47 in sediments by (14)C-labelling

2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) was difficult to degrade in sediments. In this study, the environmental behavior of BDE-47 with/without the effect of benthos (Tubificidae Limnodrilus) and electron acceptors in sediments was investigated using C-14 tracer. Generally, extractable residues of BDE-47 were dominant in sediment and posed high environment risk. The amount of non-extractable residues (NERs) accounted for 39.0% of initial radioactivity in oxic sediments was significantly higher than those in anoxic sediments (17.6%). Most of NERs were localized in the humin fraction and presented as sequestrated forms. Under oxic conditions, the present of Limnodrilus significantly increased the proportion of NERs in sediment. Limnodrilus accumulated 34.2% of initial radioactivity. Under anoxic conditions, the addition of iron (Ⅲ) [Fe(III)], sulfate and nitrate reduced the environmental risk of BDE-47 with the increase of NERs formation, while manganese (IV) [Mn(IV)] addition had no effect on the formation of NERs. The present of Limnodrilus and electron acceptors promoted the production of metabolites. Meanwhile, BDE-47 changed the microbial community structure of sediments. These findings indicated that the environmental behavior and risk of BDE-47 was affected by benthos and electron acceptors, and the high proportion of sequestrated NERs posed high bioactivity and toxic threat to ecological environment.

Evolution of humic substances and the forms of heavy metals during co-composting of rice straw and sediment with the aid of Fenton-like process

The Fenton-like process was established by Fe₃O₄ nanomaterials (NMs) and Phanerochaete chrysosporium or oxalate, and applied to the co-composting of rice straw and sediment to study its effect on the formation of humic substance and the bioavailability of Cd, Cu, and Pb. Results shown that the application of Fenton-like process significantly promoted the passivation of Cd and Cu, while not shown obvious enhancement for Pb. The decrease of exchangeable fraction Cd (EXC-Cd) and the humic acid (HA) content in pile B with Fe₃O₄ NMs and oxalate were highest, which were 22.35% and 20.3 g/kg, respectively. Redundancy analyses (RDA) manifested that the Fenton-like process enhanced the influence of humus substance on the bioavailability of Cd, Cu, and Pb. Excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectra analysis suggested that Fenton-like process could obviously enhance the generation of humic substance. This research provides a new perspective and way for composting to remediate heavy metals pollution.

Current progress in degradation and removal methods of polybrominated diphenyl ethers from water and soil: A review

The widespread of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the environment has caused rising concerns, and it is an urgent endeavor to find a proper way for PBDEs remediation. Various techniques such as adsorption, hydrothermal and thermal treatment, photolysis, photocatalytic degradation, reductive debromination, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and biological degradation have been developed for PBDEs decontamination. A comprehensive review of different PBDEs remediation techniques is urgently needed. This work focused on the environmental source and occurrence of PBDEs, their removal and degradation methods from water and soil, and prospects for PBDEs remediation techniques. According to the up-to-date literature obtained from Web of Science, it could be concluded that (i) photocatalysis and photocatalytic degradation is the most widely reported method for PBDEs remediation, (ii) BDE-47 and BDE-209 are the most investigated PBDE congeners, (iii) considering the recalcitrance nature of PBDEs and more toxic intermediates could be generated because of incomplete degradation, the combination of different techniques is the most potential solution for PBDEs removal, (iv) further researches about the development of novel and effective PBDEs remediation techniques are still needed. This review provides the latest knowledge on PBDEs remediation techniques, as well as future research needs according to the up-to-date literature.

Physiological response and oxidative transformation of 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) by a Chlorella isolate

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are ubiquitous, toxic and persistent pollutants in environments. Microalgae frequent exposed to these pollutants may possess defense mechanisms against their toxicity and have the ability to metabolize them, thus are important in bioremediation. This study investigated the mechanism of a Chlorella isolate to degrade BDE-47, a common PBDE congener, and its subcellular responses to BDE-47 stress. Results showed that 86-98% of the spiked BDE-47 was removed by Chlorella via adsorption, uptake and metabolism. BDE-47 was metabolized through debromination, hydroxylation and methoxylation. The oxidative transformation to hydroxylated products was the initial and main metabolic process. BDE-47 induced the production of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) in cell wall, plasma membrane and chloroplast of Chlorella, and such increase was regulated by nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase and H₂O₂-producing peroxidases (PODs). The activity of H₂O₂-consuming PODs and the content of glutathione were also significantly enhanced to detoxify the oxidative stress.

Assessing microbial degradation degree and bioavailability of BDE-153 in natural wetland soils: Implication by compound-specific stable isotope analysis

Microbial degradation is an important pathway for the attenuation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in natural soils. In this study, the compound-specific stable isotope analysis (CSIA) was applied to characterize microbial degradation of BDE-153, one of the prevailing and toxic PBDE congeners, in natural wetland soils. During the 45-day incubation, the residual percentages of BDE-153 decreased to 67.9% and 73.6% in non-sterilized soils spiked with 1.0 and 5.0 μg/g, respectively, which were both much lower than those in sterilized soils (96.0% and 97.2%). This result indicated that microbial degradation could accelerate BDE-153 elimination in wetland soils. Meanwhile, the significant carbon isotope fractionation was observed in non-sterilized soils, with δ¹³C of BDE-153 shifting from -29.4‰ to -26.7‰ for 1.0 μg/g and to -27.2‰ for 5.0 μg/g, respectively, whilst not in sterilized soils. This phenomenon indicated microbial degradation could induce stable carbon isotope fractionation of BDE-153. The carbon isotope enrichment factor (ε_c) for BDE-153 microbial degradation was first determined as -7.58‰, which could be used to assess the microbial degradation and bioavailability of BDE-153 in wetland soils. Based on δ¹³C and ε_c, the new methods were developed to dynamically and quantitatively estimate degradation degree and bioavailability of BDE-153 during degradation process, respectively, which could exclude interference of physical processes. This work revealed that CSIA was a promising method to investigate in situ microbial degradation of PBDEs in field studies.

Changes of heavy metal fractions during co-composting of agricultural waste and river sediment with inoculation of Phanerochaete chrysosporium

The effects of Phanerochaete chrysosporium on the bioavailability of multiple heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Cu, and Zn) in river sediments were investigated by co-composting with the agricultural waste. The results showed that the Phanerochaete chrysosporium inoculation can greatly enhance the passivation on Cu, Pb and Cd during 60 days co-composting. The effects in the three metals followed the order: Cu > Cd > Pb. There were no differences for Zn whether inoculation with P. chrysosporium or not. Redundancy analysis (RDA) implied that more than 4/5 of the variation of all fractions data for all heavy metals was explained by all significant canonical axes. P. chrysosporium can change the significant parameters for each metal and enhance the explanatory power of RDA model. The inoculation can strengthen the effect of OM (organic matter) on the bioavailability of heavy metals, but weaken the contribution of pH.

Effects of Physico-Chemical Parameters on Actinomycetes Communities during Composting of Agricultural Waste

The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of physico-chemical parameters on Actinomycetes communities and to prioritize those parameters that contributed to Actinomycetes community composition during the composting of agricultural waste. Denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis of polymerase chain reaction (PCR-DGGE) and redundancy analysis (RDA) were used to determine the relationships between those parameters and Actinomycetes community composition. Quantitative PCR (qPCR) and regression analysis were used to monitor the 16S rDNA copy numbers of Actinomycetes and to analyse the correlations between physico-chemical parameters and Actinomyces 16S rDNA gene abundance, respectively. The RDA results showed that moisture content, water soluble carbon (WSC) and pH (p < 0.05) made the main contributions to the temporal variations of Actinomycetes community composition. The output of the regression analysis indicated that moisture content (R2 = 0.407, p < 0.01) showed a negative linear relationship with the Actinomyces 16S rDNA gene abundance.

Influence of inoculating white-rot fungi on organic matter transformations and mobility of heavy metals in sewage sludge based composting

White-rot fungi, Phanerochaete chrysosporium was inoculated to sewage sludge composting. Its effect on transformation of organic matter and mobility of heavy metals (Zn, Pb, Cu, and Ni) was studied. Detailed sampling was performed to measure C contents in humic extracts (HE), humic acids (HAs), fulvic acids (FAs), humin and distribution of heavy metals, including acid exchangeable fraction (AE), reducible fraction (RED), oxidization fraction (OXI) and residual fraction (RES). In our study, it is evident that the HE, HAs increased obviously and hydrolyzed humin decreased markedly in inoculation. The stabilization rate ((OXI+RES)/(AE+RED)) of Zn, Pb, Cu, and Ni was 20.31%, 7%, 14.3% and 19.79% higher in inoculating reactor. Additionally, the changes of heavy metals fractions could be explained by the organic variables. The results of this study demonstrated that Phanerochaete chrysosporium passivates the heavy metal by provoking the formation of humus.

The potential impact on the biodegradation of organic pollutants from composting technology for soil remediation

Large numbers of organic pollutants (OPs), such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, pesticides and petroleum, are discharged into soil, posing a huge threat to natural environment. Traditional chemical and physical remediation technologies are either incompetent or expensive, and may cause secondary pollution. The technology of soil composting or use of compost as soil amendment can utilize quantities of active microbes to degrade OPs with the help of available nutrients in the compost matrix. It is highly cost-effective for soil remediation. On the one hand, compost incorporated into contaminated soil is capable of increasing the organic matter content, which improves the soil environment and stimulates the metabolically activity of microbial community. On the other hand, the organic matter in composts would increase the adsorption of OPs and affect their bioavailability, leading to decreased fraction available for microorganism-mediated degradation. Some advanced instrumental analytical approaches developed in recent years may be adopted to expound this process. Therefore, the study on bioavailability of OPs in soil is extremely important for the application of composting technology. This work will discuss the changes of physical and chemical properties of contaminated soils and the bioavailability of OPs by the adsorption of composting matrix. The characteristics of OPs, types and compositions of compost amendments, soil/compost ratio and compost distribution influence the bioavailability of OPs. In addition, the impact of composting factors (composting temperature, co-substrates and exogenous microorganisms) on the removal and bioavailability of OPs is also studied.

Effect of Phanerochaete chrysosporium inoculation on bacterial community and metal stabilization in lead-contaminated agricultural waste composting

The effects of Phanerochaete chrysosporium inoculation on bacterial community and lead (Pb) stabilization in composting of Pb-contaminated agricultural waste were studied. It was found that the bioavailable Pb was transformed to stable Pb after composting with inoculum of P. chrysosporium. Pearson correlation analysis revealed that total organic carbon (TOC) and carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio significantly (P<0.05) influenced the distribution of Pb fractions. The richness and diversity of bacterial community were reduced under Pb stress and increased after inoculation with P. chrysosporium. Redundancy analysis indicated that C/N ratio, total organic matter, temperature and soluble-exchangeable Pb were the significant parameters to affect the bacterial community structure, solely explained 14.7%, 11.1%, 10.4% and 8.3% of the variation in bacterial community composition, respectively. In addition, the main bacterial species, being related to organic matter degradation and Pb stabilization, were found. These findings will provide useful information for composting of heavy metal-contaminated organic wastes.

Influence of biochar on heavy metals and microbial community during composting of river sediment with agricultural wastes

Studies were performed to evaluate influence of biochar addition on physico-chemical process, heavy metals transformation and bacterial community diversity during composting of sediment with agricultural wastes. Simultaneously, the relationships between those parameters including heavy metals and bacterial community compositions were evaluated by redundancy analysis (RDA). The results show that the extraction efficiency of DTPA extractable heavy metals decreased in both piles, and reduced more in pile with biochar addition about 0.1-2.96%. Biochar addition dramatically influenced the bacterial community structure during the composting process. Moreover, the bacterial community composition was significantly correlated with C/N ratio, water soluble carbon (WSC), and organic matter (OM) (P<0.05) in pile with biochar addition; while significantly correlated with temperature, WSC, and C/N ratio in pile which was free of biochar. This study would provide some valuable information for improving the composting for disposal of river sediment with heavy metals contamination.
