[DNVF Memorandum: Objectives and Methods of Physical Activity-Related Health Services Research]

The DNVF Memorandum: Objectives and Methods of Physical Activity-Related Health Services Research summarizes, for the first time, the highly interdisciplinary and interprofessional field of physical activity-based health care in the German healthcare system. In addition to providing a conceptual framework and definition of key measures and concepts in physical activity-related health care research, existing research gaps and needs are identified, and methods for advancing this relatively young field of research are described. A particular focus of this study is the relevant outcome parameters and their standardized assessment using established and valid measurement tools. The memorandum aims to establish a general understanding of the complex subject of promoting physical activity and sports therapy in the context of healthcare, to give an impulse to new research initiatives, and to integrate the currently available strong evidence on the effectiveness of physical activity and exercise into healthcare.

Oxytocin-Augmented Modular-Based Group Intervention for Loneliness: A Proof-Of-Concept Randomized Controlled Trial

INTRODUCTION

Loneliness poses a significant health problem and existing psychological interventions have shown only limited positive effects on loneliness. Based on preliminary evidence for impaired oxytocin signaling in trait-like loneliness, the current proof-of-concept study used a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled design to probe intranasal oxytocin (OT) as an adjunct to a short-term modular-based group intervention for individuals suffering from high trait-like loneliness (HL, UCLA Loneliness Scale ≥55).

METHODS

Seventy-eight healthy HL adults (56 women) received five weekly group psychotherapy sessions. HL participants received OT or placebo before the intervention sessions. Primary outcomes were trait-like loneliness measured at baseline, after the intervention, and again at two follow-up time points (3 weeks and 3 months), and, assessed at each session, state loneliness (visual analog scale), perceived stress (Perceived Stress Scale, PSS-10), quality of life (World Health Organization Five Well-Being Index, WHO-5), and the therapeutic relationship (Group Questionnaire, GQ-D).

RESULTS

The psychological intervention was associated with significantly reduced perceived stress and improved trait-like loneliness across treatment groups, which was still evident at the 3-month follow-up. OT had no significant effect on trait-like loneliness, quality of life, or perceived stress. However, compared to placebo, OT significantly facilitated the decrease in state loneliness within sessions and significantly improved positive bonding between the group members.

CONCLUSION

Despite significantly improved trait-like loneliness after the intervention, OT did not significantly augment this effect. Further studies are needed to determine optimal intervention designs to translate the observed acute effects of OT into long-term benefits.

Development and validation of a questionnaire for measuring team cohesion: the Erlangen Team Cohesion at Work Scale (ETC)

BACKGROUND

Team cohesion is a crucial factor when it comes to job satisfaction and turnovers. However, in Germany, economic measures for team cohesion are scarce. The aim of this study was to develop and validate an economic self-report questionnaire for measuring team cohesion in a work setting in health care.

METHODS

The questionnaire was developed in a stepwise procedure. After item analysis, exploratory factor analysis was conducted to assess factor structure. Reliability was tested via internal consistency. To assess convergent and divergent validity, we applied the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire (COPSOQ), the Perceived Cohesion Scale (PCS), the ENRICHD Social Support Inventory (ESSI), the Effort-Reward Imbalance Scale (ERI) and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-4), respectively.

RESULTS

The pilot version was tested in a sample of n = 126 adult nurses. Item analysis resulted in a total of 13 items for the final version. Exploratory factor analysis indicated a two-factor structure. Internal consistency for the two subscales was good, with α = 0.88 and α = 0.84, respectively. Convergent validity with the subscales of COPSOQ and PCS was moderate to high (r =.26- r =.64). For divergent validity, correlations with the ESSI were low (r =.01- r = -.09). We further found significant correlations with depression symptoms (r=-.22- r=-.37), as well as reward (ERI) (r =.41 -r =.47) and effort (ERI) (r=-.20 - r = -.24).

CONCLUSIONS

We developed and validated the Erlangen Team Cohesion at Work Scale (ETC), a self-report measure for team cohesion with very good psychometric properties. Due to its economic deployment, it is suitable for measuring team cohesion in work settings, especially in health care.

[Quality characteristics and relevance to care of psychodynamic training outpatient clinics:The QVA Project]

Introduction: Quality assurance (QA) in outpatient psychotherapy is currently undergoing a process of change. Hitherto, QA has been conducted by means of an expert review procedure (the so-called "Gutachterverfahren"), inter- and supervision as well as further mandatory training. Data-based QA systems have been increasingly discussed in recent years. On behalf of the G-BA, the IQTIG has recently published a draft of a legally binding QA procedure, which has, however, raised substantial concerns and resistance. Design: TheQVA project has two objectives. First, it provides participating training outpatient clinics with a data-driven QA system that enables an automated and risk-adjusted overall evaluation based on relevant patient and referral parameters. Second, the data is used to conduct research on important issues regarding the relevant psychotherapeutic care provided by outpatient clinics. Results: Since the start of data collection in 2022, n = 2058 patients have been recruited so far (March 2023), and a complete baseline diagnostic report has been generated for n = 1112 patients. The cross-sectional analyses of all patients assessed so far show a high burden of depression, interpersonal problems and impaired quality of life with severe impairment of personality functions, pronounced conflict diagnosis and high utilization of inpatient and day hospital treatments. Discussion: This paper describes an easy-to-implement data-based QA system for psychodynamic training outpatient clinics, while at the same time allowing for the examination of healthcare- relevant questions in a large sample. The first experiences show that the system works technically stable and was well-received by the participating outpatient clinics.

Group interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT-G) for borderline personality disorder: A randomized controlled study

Recent evidence supported the notion that add-on group therapy should be provided to individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) who already undergo individual psychotherapy. The present 20 week-study was aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the adjunction of group interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT-G) to individual interpersonal psychotherapy adapted for BPD - revised (IPT-BPD-R) in comparison with individual IPT-BPD-R alone in a group of BPD patients. In addition, demographical and clinical characteristics that can be considered predictors of response to add-on group therapy were investigated. Forty-six patients were randomly assigned to 1) IPT-BPD-R plus IPT-G or to 2) IPT-BPD-R in the waiting list for IPT-G. Patients were assessed at baseline and after 20 weeks with: the Clinical Global Impression Scale, Severity item (CGI-S); the Social Occupational Functioning Assessment Scale (SOFAS); the Satisfaction Profile (SAT-P); the Borderline Personality Disorder Severity Index (BPDSI); the Modified Overt Aggression Scale (MOAS); the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire - Short Form (CTQ-SF); the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (IIP-32); and the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET). Statistical analyses included: ANOVA for repeated measures to compare score changes of the rating scales within groups (trial duration) and between groups (treatment modalities), and multiple regression analysis to identify which clinical factors are significantly and independently related to the difference of BPDSI score between baseline and week 20 (Δ BPDSI). The significance level was P ≤ 0.05. Both significant within-subjects effects (duration) and between-subjects effects (treatment modalities) were found for the following rating scales: MOAS; BPDSI items "feelings of emptiness", "outbursts of anger," and "affective instability"; RMET; SAT-P items "work" and "sleep, food, free time"; and IIP-32 scale "domineering/controlling". At the multiple regression analysis BPDSI item "impulsivity", RMET, and the subscale "socially inhibited" of the IIP-32 were significantly and independently related to Δ BPDSI score. In conclusion, the add-on of IPT-G produced higher improvement in core BPD symptoms, social cognition, a dysfunctional interpersonal style, and subjective quality of life. Subjects who were less impulsive, less socially inhibited, and with higher abilities in social cognition obtained greater benefits from the adjunction of group therapy. A Clinical Trial of Psychodynamic-Interactional and Body Therapy in Somatoform Pain Disorders - Positive Interpersonal Experiences for Patients with Early Trauma

Objectives: The aim of this clinical trial was to explore whether psychodynamic-interactional therapy leads to a better outcome in the treatment of somatoform pain disorders when combined with body therapy. Methods: 30 patients diagnosed with this disorder took part in outpatient group therapies with 25 sessions. In the intervention condition, sessions based on psychodynamic-interactional and body therapy took place in weekly change, while in the control condition all sessions were based on psychodynamic-interactional therapy. Data were collected with self-report measures at the beginning and end of therapy and at the 6-months follow-up. Results: Under both conditions somatic and psychological symptoms merely remained stable from the first to the third measurement time. However, patients expressed a high level of satisfaction with the relationships in the group. Conclusions: Contrary to the assumptions, the two therapy conditions did not differ in the treatment outcome. Both conditions proved successful in providing patients with supporting interpersonal experiences.

Women-only versus mixed-gender groups in multimodal, day clinic treatment of trauma-related disorders

Background: In the German healthcare system benefits include inpatient and day clinic psychotherapy of trauma-related disorders, which are often provided in gender specific groups. Despite this widespread practice, the actual impact and potential outcome have been studied relatively scarcely and are still open to debate. The present study therefore examines whether the therapeutic relationships in the group vary depending on the group composition and whether this has an effect on therapy outcome. Methods: 66 patients (N = 55 women) were treated in our multimodal, day clinic groupbased treatment program and filled out symptom questionnaires (ETI, BDI-II, PHQ-15, Questionnaire on social support) at admission and discharge and the Group Questionnaire (GQ; including subscales positive bonding, positive working and negative relationships) at the end of each of the eight weeks of treatment. Patients took part in five women-only and six mixed-gender groups and underwent therapy in a closed group format, so that they began and ended therapy within the same group. All patients were diagnosed with trauma-related disorders, which included PTSD, cPTSD, depression, somatoform disorders and further mental diseases. Outcome data were examined using functional regression analysis and linear mixed models. Results: In women-only groups, positive bonding and positive working relationship were significantly higher than in mixed-gender groups. Negative relationship ratings were significantly lower in women-only groups, especially in the middle phase of treatment. However, no effect of an exclusively female group composition on treatment outcome was found, except for the higher increase of perceived social support for patients treated in women-only groups. Conclusions: Group relationships were considered more pleasant in women-only groups than in mixed-gender groups, but this had no effect on the symptom-based therapy outcome. To enhance feelings of safety and comfort, traumatized women should have the possibility to choose whether to be treated in a women-only or a mixed-gender group.

Blending Internet-based and tele group treatment: Acceptability, effects, and mechanisms of change of cognitive behavioral treatment for depression

The current COV-19 pandemic increases the need for remote treatment. Among several provision strategies, tele groups have been tested as an efficient option. Still, the number of studies is comparably low, with a clear lack of studies investigating supposed treatment mechanisms. Sixty-one mildly to moderately depressed participants from Salzburg, Bavaria, and Upper Austria were randomized to the intervention or a waiting list control group (RCT). The seven-week treatment comprised preparatory online modules, followed by personalized feedback and a subsequent tele group session. Large treatment effects were observed for depression (CES-D: d = 0.99, p < .001; PHQ-9: d = 0.87, p = .002), together with large effects for cognitive behavioral skills (cognitive style, and behavioral activation, d = 0.88-0.97). Changes in skills mediated treatment outcomes for CES-D and PHQ-9, suggesting comparable mechanisms as in face-to-face therapy. Two typical moderators, therapeutic alliance, and group cohesion, however, failed to predict outcome (p = .289), or only exhibited statistical tendencies (p = .049 to .071). Client satisfaction, system usability, and treatment adherence were high. Blending Internet-based and tele group interventions offers additional options for low-threshold care that is less dependent on population density, commuting distances, or constraints due to the current COV-19 crisis. Results indicate that the blended intervention is clinically effective by fostering core CBT skills. While findings suggest the notion that working alliance and group cohesion can be established online, their relevancy for outcomes of blended treatment needs to be further investigated.

How can learning effects be measured in Balint groups? Validation of a Balint group questionnaire in China

BACKGROUND

Balint groups aim to reflect doctor-patient relationships on the basis of personal cases. This study reports the validation of a questionnaire aimed at the identification of learning processes among Balint group participants in China.

METHODS

This multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted during Balint group sessions in Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai. A heterogeneous sample of different professional groups was intended to adequately capture the reality of Balint work in China. After a Balint group session, the participants were asked to complete the Mandarin version of the Balint group session questionnaire (BGQ-C) and the group questionnaire (GQ), an internationally validated instrument to assess central dimensions of therapeutic relationships during group processes.

RESULTS

Questionnaires from n = 806 participants from 55 Chinese Balint groups, predominantly comprising individuals with a medical background, were analyzed. Most participants were female (74.6%), and the average age was 34.2 years old (SD = 9.4). The results indicated good to very good reliability (Cronbach's α = .70 to .86; retest r_s = .430 to .697). The verification of the construct validity of the BGQ-C showed satisfying convergent (r_s = .465 to .574) and discriminant validity (r_s = -.117 to -.209). The model was tested with a confirmatory factor analysis of a three-factor model (standardized root mean square residual = .025; comparative fit index = .977; Tucker-Lewis index = .971). The 3 empirically identified scales resulted in good model fit with the theoretical dimensions of Balint work postulated in the literature: "reflection of transference dynamics in the doctor-patient relationship", "emotional and cognitive learning" and "case mirroring in the dynamic of the group". Due to the high correlations between the factors, a single-factor model was possible. A group comparison between the German and Chinese samples showed different loadings across cultures.

CONCLUSIONS

The BGQ-C is a quick-to-complete, item-based measuring instrument that allows the relevant dimensions of Balint group work to be recorded. This study suggests good psychometric properties of the Chinese version. Nevertheless, it must be assumed that the composition of constructs in the two countries is different.

Group cohesion in group-based personal practice

BACKGROUND

Personal practice (PP) is an integral component of many psychotherapy training programmes. It aims to promote personal and professional growth and is often conducted in a group format (g-PP). Group cohesion is one of the most researched mechanisms in group psychotherapy, but has rarely been studied in the context of g-PP.

AIMS AND METHOD

This exploratory study examines the associations between cohesion, satisfaction with g-PP, its impact on personal and professional development, and theoretical orientation in a sample of n = 329 German psychotherapy trainees. Cohesion was assessed with the group questionnaire (GQ-D; Positive Bonding, Positive Working, Negative Relationship).

RESULTS

Overall, participants reported high levels of all outcome variables. Positive Bonding was the strongest predictor of satisfaction with g-PP (β = 0.46, p<.001). While trainees in cognitive behaviour therapy reported significantly better cohesion scores (d≥0.31), trainees in psychodynamic therapy reported significantly higher satisfaction with g-PP and its impact on their developments (d≥0.30).

CONCLUSIONS

Group cohesion appears to be an important factor in g-PP that should be actively promoted by group leaders. However, longitudinal study designs are needed to better understand the emergence of cohesion in g-PP as well as potential moderating factors.

Alliance Rupture Detection and Repair in Group Therapy: Using the Group Questionnaire--GQ

The identification of relationship ruptures in group therapy coupled with repair efforts by the group leader are addressed from a measurement-based care (MBC) perspective. Several MBC systems are now recognized as evidence-based treatments, and these systems typically use self-report assessment of both outcome and relationship measures. After laying a brief foundation of alliance rupture and repair from an individual therapy perspective, the complexity of applying alliance and repair across the multiple therapeutic relationships and constructs found in the group treatment literature is considered. The Group Questionnaire (GQ) is an empirically derived measure designed to capture the multiple relationship structures (member-member, member-leader, and member-group) and constructs (alliance, cohesion, climate, and empathy) in group therapy. Similarities and differences between the GQ and alliance rupture and repair measures are considered, followed by algorithms used to identify rupture and repair in group therapy on the three GQ subscales-positive bond, positive work, and negative relationship. MBC clinical reports are used to illustrate how rupture is identified at both a group and individual member perspective along with information to support repair interventions. Finally, both clinical and empirical reasons for using the MBC approach are considered along with clinical observations.

Italian adaptation of the Group Questionnaire: validity and factorial structure

The Group Questionnaire (GQ) is a measure recently developed by Krogel et al. (2013) for the evaluation of the therapeutic relationship in group. The GQ identifies a three-factor model of the relationship that allows to measure quality (Positive Bonding, Positive Working and Negative Relationship) and structure (member-member, member-leader and member-group), dimensions in group. This work shows the results of a first study on the Italian validation of the GQ. In this study the GQ was administered to 536 subjects from 32 non-clinical groups of undergraduate students. The cross-cultural validity of the GQ in the Italian population has been examined by comparing the psychometric properties and equivalence in factor structure and scores of the Italian GQ with the original American version. Multilevel confirmatory factor analysis was used to examine both the between- and within-group structures. Data concerning reliability and validity of GQ and the results for different SEM in Multilevel CFA confirm the three factors structure of the GQ. Data from the Italian population have a good fit with the original proposed model. Finally, we discuss the importance of an instrument like GQ, short but consistent, for the evaluation of the therapeutic relationship in clinical and training group.

Instrumente und Materialien zur Unterstützung gruppenpsychotherapeutischer Praxis

Unter Verwendung des Akronyms IMELDA fasst diese Arbeit eine Auswahl von Instrumenten und Materialien zusammen, die in der Praxis der Gruppenpsychotherapie hilfreich und nützlich sein können. Das Akronym fasst die Aspekte der Information, der Motivation und Auswahl, der Evaluation zusammen sowie das Gruppenleiterverhalten, die Dokumentation von Gruppensitzungen sowie die Erfassung von Allianz und anderen Prozessmerkmalen. Die verschiedenen Bereiche von „IMELDA“ werden skizziert, unter Darstellung beispielhafter Methoden sowie ihrer Qualität und Verfügbarkeit. Insbesondere vor dem Hintergrund der erhofften Zunahme gruppentherapeutischer Angebote auch im ambulanten Kontext ist davon auszugehen, dass eine gewisse Standardisierung von Abläufen und Begleitdiagnostiken in der Gruppenpsychotherapie für Praktikerinnen und Praktiker von Nutzen ist.

Online-group intervention after suicide bereavement through the use of webinars: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

Introduction

The death of a significant person through suicide is a very difficult experience and can have long-term impact on an individual’s psychosocial and physical functioning. However, there are only few studies that have examined the effects of interventions in suicide survivors. In the present study, we examine an online-group intervention for people bereaved by suicide using a group-webinar.

Methods

The intervention was developed based on focus groups with the target group. The cognitive-behavioral 12-module webinar-based group intervention focuses on suicide bereavement-related themes such as feelings of guilt, stigmatization, meaning reconstruction and the relationship to the deceased. Further, the webinar includes testimonial videos and psychoeducation. The suicide survivors are randomized to the intervention or the waiting list in a group-cluster randomized controlled trial. Primary outcomes are suicidality (Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation) and depression (Beck Depression Inventory-II) and secondary outcomes are symptoms of prolonged grief disorder (Inventory of Complicated Grief-German Version ), posttraumatic stress disorder ( Revised Impact of Event Scale ), stigmatization (Stigma of Suicide and Suicide Survivor ) and posttraumatic cognitions (Posttraumatic Cognitions Inventory).

Discussion

Previous studies of Internet-based interventions for the bereaved were based on writing interventions showing large treatment effects. Little is known about the use of webinars as group interventions. Advantages and challenges of this novel approach of psychological interventions will be discussed.

Exclusion-Proneness in Borderline Personality Disorder Inpatients Impairs Alliance in Mentalization-Based Group Therapy

Interpersonal sensitivity, particularly threat of potential exclusion, is a critical condition in borderline personality disorder (BPD) which impairs patients’ social adjustment. Current evidence-based treatments include group components, such as mentalization-based group therapy (MBT-G), in order to improve interpersonal functioning. These treatments additionally focus on the therapeutic alliance since it was discovered to be a robust predictor of treatment outcome. However, alliance is a multidimensional factor of group therapy, which includes the fellow patients, and may thus be negatively affected by the exclusion-proneness of BPD patients. The aim of this pilot study was to examine the predictive value of threat of social exclusion for the therapeutic alliance in MBT-G. In the first part of the study, social exclusion was experimentally induced in 23 BPD inpatients and 28 healthy subjects using the Cyberball paradigm, a virtual ball tossing game. The evoked level of threat was measured with the Need-Threat Scale (NTS) which captures four dimensions of fundamental human needs, i.e., the need for belongingness, for self-esteem, for control, and for a meaningful existence. In the second part of the study, therapeutic alliance was measured on three dimensions, the therapists, the fellow patients and the group as a whole, using the Group-Questionnaire (GQ-D). BPD patients scored higher in their level of threat according to the NTS in both, the inclusion and the exclusion condition. The level of threat after exclusion predicted impairments of the therapeutic alliance in MBT-G. It was associated with more negative relationships, lower positive bonding and a lower positive working alliance with the fellow patients and lower positive bonding to the group as a whole whilst no negative prediction of the alliance to the therapists was found. Consequently, our translational study design has shown that Cyberball is an appropriate tool to use as an approach for clinical questions. We further conclude that exclusion-proneness in BPD is a critical feature with respect to alliance in group treatments. In order to neutralize BPD patients’ exclusion bias, therapists may be advised to provide an “inclusive stance,” especially in initial sessions. It is also recommendable to strengthen patient to patient relations.

Validation of the URICA-S in Group Therapy: Associations of Stages of Change with Therapeutic Factors and Treatment Outcome

Stages of change could be driving forces to activate the realization of therapeutic factors and symptom change. Consequently, the aims of the present study were to investigate whether the stages of change concept is valid in group therapy settings shown by factor analysis, internal consistencies, and criterion validity. A total of 377 patients completed measures of stages of change, symptom change, and therapeutic factors. A confirmatory factor analysis replicated the stages of change factors for group therapy. Related to the criterion validity, stages of change demonstrated only low, non-significant associations with symptom change, but some stages of change were significant predictors of certain therapeutic factors. Further research is needed to explore whether a stronger focus on motivational stages of change could help to intensify the realization of therapeutic factors in group therapy.

Adverse events of group psychotherapy in the in-patient setting - results of a naturalistic trial

OBJECTIVE

Adverse events of psychotherapy have often been neglected in research. In this study, potential adverse events of group psychotherapies in a psychiatric hospital were systematically assessed, explored for predictors and linked to treatment outcome.

METHOD

A naturalistic trial was conducted in 180 in-patients attending different group psychotherapies. Adverse events were assessed using three different measures: (i) weekly reporting of unwanted treatment reactions, (ii) mood changes in response to every single group session and (iii) premature group termination.

RESULTS

Different measures of adverse events were weakly associated. Deterioration of mood state and/or unwanted treatment reactions were experienced by 60-65% of all patients. Reports of unwanted treatment reactions decreased over time and were negatively associated with symptom improvement. However, mood state deterioration was constant and unrelated to treatment outcome. The rate of premature group termination was 34%. Significant predictors of adverse events included patient characteristics as well as disadvantageous group conditions.

CONCLUSIONS

For the majority of patients, group psychotherapy in the in-patient setting is associated with adverse events. Changes over time and a strong correlation with general symptom severity must be considered in the assessment and interpretation of adverse events. Predictors should be considered as potential risk factors in future research.

Internet-based individually versus group guided self-help treatment for social anxiety disorder: protocol of a randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is one of the most common mental disorders and causes subjective suffering and economic burden worldwide. Although effective treatments are available, a lot of cases go untreated. Internet-based self-help is a low-threshold and flexible treatment alternative for SAD. Various studies have already shown that internet-based self-help can be effective to reduce social phobic symptoms significantly. Most of the interventions tested include therapist support, whereas the role of peer support within internet-based self-help has not yet been fully understood. There is evidence suggesting that patients' mutual exchange via integrated discussion forums can increase the efficacy of internet-based treatments. This study aims at investigating the added value of therapist-guided group support on the treatment outcome of internet-based self-help for SAD.

METHODS/DESIGN

The study is conducted as a randomized controlled trial. A total of 150 adults with a diagnosis of SAD are randomly assigned to either a waiting-list control group or one of the active conditions. The participants in the two active conditions use the same internet-based self-help program, either with individual support by a psychologist or therapist-guided group support. In the group guided condition, participants can communicate with each other via an integrated, protected discussion forum. Subjects are recruited via topic related websites and links; diagnostic status will be assessed with a telephone interview. The primary outcome variables are symptoms of SAD and diagnostic status after the intervention. Secondary endpoints are general symptomology, depression, quality of life, as well as the primary outcome variables 6 months later. Furthermore, process variables such as group processes, the change in symptoms and working alliance will be studied.

DISCUSSION

The results of this study should indicate whether group-guided support could enhance the efficacy of an internet-based self-help treatment for SAD. This novel treatment format, if shown effective, could represent a cost-effective option and could further be modified to treat other conditions, as well.

Integrating psychotherapy research with public health and public policy goals for incarcerated women and other vulnerable populations

OBJECTIVE AND METHOD

In this article, I review my research applying interpersonal treatments and interpersonal principles from psychotherapy for major depression and substance use to broader public health goals for incarcerated women and other vulnerable populations.

RESULTS

A public health focus has led me to expand the boundaries of psychotherapy research to include partners such as prisons, parole officers, and bachelor's level providers; behaviors like risky sex; service delivery challenges; and ultimately to research with an eye toward informing policy and advocacy.

CONCLUSIONS

A public health perspective provides context and rationale for conducting sound psychotherapy research; the combination of public health and psychotherapy-specific perspectives can lead to novel research.
