Abstract
Objectives: A growing body of evidence highlights the effects of air pollution on chronic and acute cardiovascular diseases, such as associations between PM10 and several cardiovascular events. However, evidence of the impact of fine air pollutants on the development and progression of peripheral arterial aneurysms is not available. Methods: Data were obtained from the multicenter PAA outcome registry POPART and the German Environment Agency. Means of the mean daily concentration of PM10, PM2.5, NO2, and O3 concentrations were calculated for 2, 10, and 3650 days prior to surgery for each patient. Additionally, weighted ten-year averages were analyzed. Correlation was assessed by calculating Pearson correlation coefficients, and regression analyses were conducted as multiple linear or multiple logistic regression, depending on the dependent variable. Results: For 1193 patients from the POPART registry, paired air pollution data were available. Most patients were male (95.6%) and received open surgical repair (89.9%). On a regional level, the arithmetic means of the daily means of PM10 between 2000 and 2022 were neither associated with average diameters nor runoff vessels. Negative correlations for mean PAA diameter and mean NO2, as well as a positive correlation with mean O3, were found; however, they were not statistically significant. On patient level, no evidence for an association of mean PM10 exposure over ten years prior to inclusion in the registry and PAA diameter or the number of runoff vessels was found. Weighted PM10, NO2, and O3 exposure over ten years also did not result in significant associations with aneurysm diameter or runoff vessels. Short-term air pollutant concentrations were not associated with symptomatic PAAs or with perioperative complications. Conclusions: We found no indication that long-term air pollutant concentrations are associated with PAA size or severity, neither on a regional nor individual level. Additionally, short-term air pollution showed no association with clinical presentation or treatment outcomes.

Abstract
We aimed to evaluate the association between air pollutants and mortality risk in patients with acute aortic dissection (AAD) in a longitudinal cohort and to explore the potential mechanisms of adverse prognosis induced by fine particulate matter (PM2.5). Air pollutants data, including PM2.5, PM10.0, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ozone (O3), were collected from official monitoring stations, and multivariable Cox regression models were applied. Single-cell sequencing and proteomics of aortic tissue were conducted to explore the potential mechanisms. In total, 1,267 patients with AAD were included. Exposure to higher concentrations of air pollutants was independently associated with an increased mortality risk. The high-PM2.5 group carried approximately 2 times increased mortality risk. There were linear associations of PM10, NO2, CO, and SO2 exposures with long-term mortality risk. Single-cell sequencing revealed an increase in mast cells in aortic tissue in the high-PM2.5 exposure group. Enrichment analysis of the differentially expressed genes identified the inflammatory response as one of the main pathways, with IL-17 and TNF signaling pathways being among the top pathways. Analysis of proteomics also identified these pathways. This study suggests that exposure to higher PM2.5, PM10, NO2, CO, and SO2 are associated with increased mortality risk in patients with AAD. PM2.5-related activation and degranulation of mast cells may be involved in this process.

Abstract
Acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD) is a dramatic emergency exhibiting a mortality of 50% within the first 48 hours if not operated. This study found an absolute value of cosine-like seasonal variation pattern for Germany with significantly fewer ATAAD events (Wilcoxon test) for the warm months of June, July, and August from 2005 to 2015. Many studies suspect a connection between ATAAD events and weather conditions. Using ERA5 reanalysis data and an objective weather type classification in a contingency table approach showed that for Germany, significantly more ATAAD events occurred during lower temperatures (by about 4.8 K), lower water vapor pressure (by about 2.6 hPa), and prevailing wind patterns from the northeast. In addition, we used data from a classification scheme for human-biometeorological weather conditions which was not used before in ATAAD studies. For the German region of Berlin and Brandenburg, for 2006 to 2019, the proportion of days with ATAAD events during weather conditions favoring hypertension (cold air advection, in the center of a cyclone, conditions with cold stress or thermal comfort) was significantly increased by 13% (Chi-squared test for difference of proportions). In contrast, the proportion was decreased by 19% for conditions associated with a higher risk for patients with hypotension and therefore a lower risk for patients with hypertension (warm air advection ahead of warm fronts, conditions with no thermal stress or heat stress, in the center of a cyclone with thermal stress). As many studies have shown that hypertension is a risk factor for ATAAD, our findings support the hypothesized relation between ATAAD and hypertension-favoring weather conditions.

Abstract
We conducted an evaluation of the impact of meteorological factor forecasts on the prediction of fine particles in Chengdu, China, during autumn and winter, utilizing the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST)733 objective weather classification software and the Community Multiscale Air Quality model. This analysis was performed under four prevailing weather patterns. Fine particle pollution tended to occur under high-pressure rear, homogeneous-pressure, and low-pressure conditions; by contrast, fine particle concentrations were lower under high-pressure bottom conditions. The forecasts of fine particle concentrations were more accurate under high-pressure bottom conditions than under high-pressure rear and homogeneous-pressure conditions. Moreover, under all conditions, the 24 h forecast of fine particle concentrations were more accurate than the 48 and 72 h forecasts. Regarding meteorological factors, forecasts of 2 m relative humidity and 10 m wind speed were more accurate under high-pressure bottom conditions than high-pressure rear and homogeneous-pressure conditions. Moreover, 2 m relative humidity and 10 m wind speed were important factors for forecasting fine particles, whereas 2 m air temperature was not. Finally, the 24 h forecasts of meteorological factors were more accurate than the 48 and 72 h forecasts, consistent with the forecasting of fine particles.

Abstract
Background Air pollution and severe weather conditions can adversely affect cardiovascular disease emergencies. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether air pollutants and low ambient temperature can trigger the occurrence of acute aortic dissection (AAD) in cold regions. Methods We applied a retrospective analysis to assess the short-term effects of air pollution and ambient temperature on the occurrence of AAD in Harbin, China. A total of 564 AAD patients were enrolled from a major hospital in Harbin between January 1, 2017, and February 5, 2021. Weather condition data and air pollutant concentrations, including fine particulate matter smaller than 10 μm (PM10) and 2.5 μm in diameter (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and ozone (O3), were collected every day. Conditional logistic regressions and correlation analysis were applied to analyze the relationship of environmental and atmospheric parameters with AAD occurrence at lags of 0 to 7 days. Specifically, we appraised the air quality index, CO, NO2, SO2, O3, PM10, PM2.5, temperature, dew point temperature, atmospheric pressure, and cloud amount. Results A total of 1,496 days at risk were assessed, of which 564 patients developed AAD. Specifically, AAD did not occur on 1,043 (69.72%) days, while 1 or more cases occurred on 453 (30.28%) days. Several pollution and weather predictors for AAD were confirmed by multilevel modeling. The air quality index (p = 0.0012), cloud amount (p = 0.0001), and concentrations of PM2.5 (p = 0.0004), PM10 (p = 0.0013), NO2 (p = 0.0007) and O3 (p = 0.0001) predicted AAD as early as 7 days before the incident (lag of 7 days) in the study period. However, only concentrations of the air pollutants NO2 (p = 0.0468) and O3 (p = 0.011) predicted the occurrence of AAD after the COVID-19 outbreak. Similar predictive effects were observed for temperature, dew point temperature, and atmospheric pressure (all p < 0.05) on all days. Conclusion The risk of AAD is closely related to air pollution and weather characteristics in Harbin. While causation was not determined, the impact of air pollutants on the risk of AAD was reduced after the COVID-19 outbreak.

Abstract
Background Extreme precipitation events are becoming more frequent due to climate change. The present study aimed to explore the impacts of extreme precipitation on hospitalizations for acute aortic dissection (AAD) and to identify susceptible populations and quantify the corresponding disease burden. Methods The present study used a distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) with a quasi-Poisson function to investigate the association between extreme precipitation (≥95th percentile) and the risk of hospitalizations for AAD from 2015 to 2020 in Shantou, Guangdong Province, China. Results The significant adverse effects of extreme precipitation (relative to no precipitation) on daily AAD hospitalizations lasted from lag 5 [relative risk (RR): 1.0318, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.0067-1.0575] to lag 9 (RR: 1.0297, 95% CI: 1.0045-1.0555) and reached its maximum at lag 7 (RR: 1.0382, 95% CI: 1.0105-1.0665). Males and older adult individuals (≥60 years) were more susceptible to extreme precipitation. A total of 3.68% (118 cases) of AAD hospitalizations were due to extreme precipitation. Conclusion Extreme precipitation was significantly correlated with AAD hospitalizations. Government departments should actively implement extreme precipitation intervention measures to strengthen the protection of males and the older adult (≥60 years) and effectively reduce AAD hospitalizations.

Abstract
Air pollution is a major public health concern worldwide. Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is closely associated with cardiovascular diseases. However, the effect of PM2.5 exposure on thoracic aortic aneurysm and dissection (TAAD) has not been fully elucidated. Diesel exhaust particulate (DEP) is an important component of PM2.5, which causes health effects and is closely related to the incidence of cardiovascular disease. In the current study, we found that DEP exposure increased the incidence of aortic dissection (AD) in β-aminopropionitrile (BAPN)-induced thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA). In addition, exposure to PM2.5 increased the diameter of the thoracic aorta in mice models. The number of apoptotic cells increased in the aortic wall of PM2.5-treated mice, as did the protein expression level of BAX/Bcl2 and cleaved caspase3/caspase3. Using a rhythmically stretching aortic mechanical simulation model, fluorescent staining indicated that PM2.5 administration could induce mitochondrial dysfunction and increase reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in human aortic smooth muscle cells (HASMCs). Furthermore, ERK1/2 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathways participated in the apoptosis of HASMCs after PM2.5 exposure. Therefore, we concluded that PM2.5 exposure could exacerbate the progression of TAAD, which could be induced by the increased apoptosis in HASMCs through the ERK1/2 MAPK signaling pathway.

Abstract
Background Acute aortic dissection (AAD) is a life-threatening cardiovascular emergency with high mortality, so identifying modifiable risk factors of AAD is of great public health significance. The associations of non-optimal temperature and temperature variability with AAD onset and the disease burden have not been fully understood. Methods We conducted a time-stratified case-crossover study using a nationwide registry dataset from 1,868 hospitals in 313 Chinese cities. Conditional logistic regression and distributed lag models were used to investigate associations of temperature and temperature changes between neighboring days (TCN) with the hourly AAD onset and calculate the attributable fractions. We also evaluated the heterogeneity of the associations. Findings A total of 40,270 eligible AAD cases were included. The exposure-response curves for temperature and TCN with AAD onset risk were both inverse and approximately linear. The risks were present on the concurrent hour (for temperature) or day (for TCN) and lasted for almost 1 day. The cumulative relative risks of AAD were 1.027 and 1.026 per 1°C lower temperature and temperature decline between neighboring days, respectively. The associations were significant during the non-heating period, but were not present during the heating period in cities with central heating. 23.13% of AAD cases nationwide were attributable to low temperature and 1.58% were attributable to temperature decline from the previous day. Interpretation This is the largest nationwide study demonstrating robust associations of low temperature and temperature decline with AAD onset. We, for the first time, calculated the corresponding disease burden and further showed that central heating may be a modifier for temperature-related AAD risk and burden. Abstract
Aortic dissection (AD) is a severe cardiovascular disease with a high mortality rate. However, the associations between the serum levels of metals and the risk of AD remain unclear. One hundred twenty-seven patients with AD (type A and B) identified from 2017 to 2019 at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University were included; 183 controls that were also included. A logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the associations between serum levels of metals and the risk of AD. Weighted Quantile Sum (WQS) regression and Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression (BKMR) analyses were performed to explore the effects of mixtures of metals on the risk of AD. A linear regression analysis was performed to evaluate the relationships between the serum levels of metals and the white blood cells (WBCs) count and serum lipid levels and blood glucose. We conducted a mediation analysis to explore the contribution rates of WBC counts or serum lipid levels and blood glucose to the association between metal levels and the risk of AD. Exposure to serum levels of Cu (coefficient = 6.33; 95 % CI = 2.52, 10.14; p trend < 0.001) were significantly and positively associated with the risk of AD. In the WQS analysis, Cu (50.3 %), Ni (32.7 %) and Mo (17.1 %) contributed to the AD risk. In the BKMR analysis, Cu and Mo were shown to play important roles in the association with the AD risk. Moreover, serum concentrations of Cu were significantly and inversely associated with HDL-cholesterol levels. HDL-cholesterol levels mediated 7.42 % of the association between serum Cu levels and the prevalence of AD. Our study provided the first evidence that serum levels of mixtures of metals are associated with the AD risk in a Chinese population. Increased concentrations of metals, particularly Cu, may increase the risk of AD by reducing HDL-cholesterol levels.

Abstract
AIMS The incidence of acute aortic dissection (AAD) has been shown to have seasonal variation, but whether this variation can be explained by non-optimum ambient temperature and temperature change between neighbouring days (TCN) is not clear. METHODS AND RESULTS We performed a time-stratified case-crossover study in the Registry of Aortic Dissection in China covering 14 tertiary hospitals in 11 cities from 2009 to 2019. A total of 8182 cases of AAD were included. Weather data at residential address were matched from nearby monitoring stations. Conditional logistic regression model and distributed lag nonlinear model were used to estimate the associations of daily temperature and TCN with AAD, adjusting for possible confounders. We observed an increase of AAD risk with lower temperature cumulated over lag 0-1 day and this association became statistically significant when daily mean temperature was below 24°C. Relative to the referent temperature (28°C), the odds ratios (ORs) of AAD onset at extremely low (-10°C) and low (1°C) temperature cumulated over lag 0-1 day were 2.84 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.69, 4.75] and 2.36 (95% CI: 1.61, 3.47), respectively. A negative TCN was associated with increased risk of AAD. The OR of AAD cumulated over lag 0-6 days was 2.66 (95% CI: 1.76, 4.02) comparing the extremely negative TCN (-7°C) to no temperature change. In contrast, a positive TCN was associated with reduced AAD risk. CONCLUSION This study provides novel and robust evidence that low ambient temperature and temperature drop between neighbouring days were associated with increased risk of AAD onset. KEY QUESTION Incidence of acute aortic dissection (AAD) was reported to have seasonal trends, but it remains unclear whether non-optimum ambient temperature and temperature change between neighbouring days (TCN) is associated with AAD onset. KEY FINDING Daily mean temperature lower than 24°C was significantly associated with increased risk of AAD at lag 0-1 day. A negative TCN (temperature drop) was associated with increased risk of AAD, whereas a positive TCN was associated with decreased risk. TAKE HOME MESSAGE This multi-centre, case-crossover study provides novel and robust evidence that low ambient temperature and temperature drop between neighbouring days were associated with increased AAD risk.

Abstract
Background The association between ambient temperature and cardiovascular diseases has been well established, but evidence of temporal changes in the risk of acute aortic dissection (AAD) onset is lacking. Methods and Results We conducted an 8-year time-series study based on data from 2120 patients diagnosed with AAD at Tongji Hospital (Wuhan, China). Daily meteorological parameters were measured in the study area. Spearman's rank correlation analysis was applied to measure the associations between daily meteorological data and air pollution indicators. A distributed lag nonlinear model following quasi-Poisson regression was used to express the nonlinear exposure-response relationships and lag effects of daily mean temperature and temperature variability on the occurrence of AAD. Considering a 25-day lag effect, lower or higher temperatures with reference to 25°C did not alter the onset risk of AAD. The lag effect of daily mean temperature on the incidence of AAD is statistically significant within 2 days, and the impact of daily mean temperature on the risk is most influential on the day. The exposure-response curve between daily mean temperature and onset risks of AAD at lag 0 showed that the extremely cold temperature (2.5th percentile, 0.5°C) significantly increased the AAD risk for the total (relative risk, 1.733; 95% CI, 1.130-2.658) and type A dissection (relative risk, 3.951; 95% CI, 1.657-9.418). Temperature variability within 1 week did not affect the onset risks of AAD for the total. Conclusions We confirmed that extremely cold temperatures significantly increased the AAD risk, which could contribute to early prevention and timely diagnosis of the disease.

This paper explored whether air pollutants influenced acute aortic dissection (AAD) incidence in a moderately polluted area. A total of 494 AAD patients’ data from 2013 to 2016 were analyzed. The results showed that AAD had the strongest associations with PM10, SO2, NO2, CO, and O3 on the day before an AAD incident (lag1) and with PM2.5 two days before an incident (lag2) in single-pollutant model. In the three-pollutant model, PM10 was associated with the highest risk of adverse effects (RR = 1.37, 95% CI: 1.22, 1.53), whereas PM2.5 was associated with the lowest risk (RR = .83, 95% CI: .79, .88). Both PM2.5 and PM10 were affected by season, and SO2 was significantly different between heating and non-heating seasons as well. This study revealed significant associations between short-term PM2.5, PM10, and SO2 exposure and daily AAD incidence, showing that PM10 and SO2 were strong predictors of AAD incidence in a moderately polluted area.

Abstract
It remains unknown whether ambient air pollution could induce the onset of acute aortic dissection (AAD). This study aimed to investigate the potential association between fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and AAD onset. We collected new episodes of AAD between January 1, 2014 and December 31, 2018 from the emergency department of a major hospital in Shanghai, China. The overdispersed generalized additive model was used to estimate the association between PM2.5 and AAD emergency hospitalizations and was adjusted for time trends and weather conditions. During the study period, we identified a total of 1335 cases of AAD hospitalizations and recorded an average PM2.5 concentration of 45 ± 30 μg/m3. The association was statistically significant on the concurrent day of hospital admission, remained on the lag 1 day. For the average of the two lags, a 10 μg/m3 increase of PM2.5 was associated with 3.38% (95% confidence interval: 1.02%, 5.79%) increase of AAD hospitalizations. The association between PM2.5 and AAD remained when adjusting for the concomitant exposures to coarse particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and ozone. The concentration-response curves increased apparently when daily PM2.5 concentration was beyond the China's National Ambient Air Quality Standard (35 μg/m3). In stratified analyses, the significant association was only present among elders and males, and during cool season. This investigation demonstrated a significant and robust association between short-term PM2.5 exposure and increased AAD hospitalizations in Shanghai, China. Our findings have important implications for the prevention of AAD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: There is still much controversy about whether meteorological conditions influence the occurrence of acute aortic dissection (AAD). The aim of the present study was to investigate the possible correlation between atmospheric pressure, temperature, lunar cycle and the event of aortic dissection in our patient population. METHODS: The clinical data for 348 patients with AAD (73% type Stanford A) were confronted with the meteorological data provided by the Cologne weather station over the same period. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences between meteorological parameters on days of AAD events compared with control days. A logistic regression model showed that air pressure (odds ratio [OR] 1.004, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.991-1.017, p = 0.542), air temperature (OR 0.978, 95% CI 0.949-1.008, p = 0.145), season ( p = 0.918) and month of the event ( p = 0.175) as well as presence of full moon (OR 1.579, 95% CI 0.763-3.270, p = 0.219) were not able to predict AAD events. Also, no predictive power of meteorological data and season was found on analysing their impact on different types of AAD events. CONCLUSIONS: Our study did not reveal any dependence of atmospheric pressure, air temperature or the presence of full moon on the incidence of different types of AAD.
