Abstract
In contrast to the hyperactive platinum electrode, ARS modified platinum electrode presents a remarkable inertness toward adsorption and surface processes and lends it for further voltammetric applications. Measuring pyrogallol levels in samples is significant for assessing their antioxidant activity, which is crucial for understanding their potential health benefits and ability to combat oxidative stress. In addition, the excess consumption of pyrogallol can have significant negative effects on human health. A voltammetric sensor has been developed for the determination of pyrogallol using ARS modified platinum electrode. The electrode was prepared by electrodeposition of alizarin red S on a platinum electrode using cyclic voltammetry with a potential scan range of - 0.4 to 1.2 V against an Ag/AgCl quasi reference electrode for 60 cycles as optimum number of cycles. The modified electrode was characterized by CV and SEM techniques. This modified alizarin red S platinum electrode showed remarkable electrocatalytic performance and stability, resulting in a significant increase in pyrogallol oxidation current by 11.05% compared to the pyrogallol oxidative current at the unmodified platinum electrode. A well-defined oxidation peak was observed at ~ 0.40 V. The sensor exhibited a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.28 µM and a linear standard curve covering the ranges of 1.0-40 µM and 0.01-10.0 mM pyrogallol. Extensive studies were performed to evaluate possible interferences from various organic and inorganic compounds and yielded satisfactory results that confirm the selectivity of the developed sensor for pyrogallol determination. In addition, the ARS-Pt electrode provided consistently reliable results for the accurate detection of pyrogallol in water and tomato samples.

Abstract
A simple fluorescence method is described for measuring rutin dependent on the nitogen-doped carbon dots (NCDs) prepared via simple pyrolysis method from chicken feet biowaste. The as-fabricated NCDs have unique advantages including cost-effectiveness and high quantum yield (42.9 %). The as-prepared NCDs explore an optimal emission band at 430 nm following exciting NCDs at 330 nm. Addition of rutin to blue-emissive NCDs quenched their fluorescence emission by inner-filtration effect (IFE) and static quenching. Under optimized conditions, the fluorescence responses increased as the rutin amount was raised from 100 to 1000 nmol/L with 5.3 nmol/L as a detection limit (S/N = 3). The probe selectivity was improved by adding bovine serum albumin (BSA), which binds other structurally-related compounds (other flavonoids). The as-synthesized NCDs exhibited some advantages towards rutin detection such as: lower LOD value, satisfactorily reproducibility, simplicity, rapidity, selectivity, and stability. The sensing probe was efficiently utilized for determining rutin in different real samples with acceptable results. The sensor offers an efficient biowaste-based approach for the determination of (bio) molecules.

Abstract
Silver ions (Ag+) exist widely in various areas of human life, and the food contamination caused by them poses a serious threat to human health. Among the numerous methods used for the detection of Ag+, fluorescence and colorimetric analysis have attracted much attention due to their inherent advantages, such as high sensitivity, simple operation, short time, low cost and visualized detection. In this work, Pd/Pt nanoflowers (NFs) specifically responsive to Ag+ were synthesized in a simple way to oxidize o-phenylenediamine (OPD) into 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP). The interaction of Ag+ with the surface of Pd/Pt NFs inhibits the catalytic activity of Pd/Pt NFs towards the substrate OPD. A novel dual-channel nanosensor was constructed for the detection of Ag+, using the fluorescence intensity and UV-vis absorption intensity of DAP as output signals. This dual-mode analysis combines their respective advantages to significantly improve the sensitivity and accuracy of Ag+ detection. The results showed that the limit of detection was 5.8 nM for the fluorescence channel and 46.9 nM for the colorimetric channel, respectively. Moreover, the developed platform has been successfully used for the detection of Ag+ in real samples with satisfactory recoveries, which is promising for the application in the point-of-care testing of Ag+ in the field of food safety.

Abstract
Copper (Cu) plays a role in maintaining healthy nerve cells and the immune system. Osteoporosis is a high-risk factor for Cu deficiency. In the proposed research, unique green, fluorescent cysteine-doped MnO2 quantum dots (Cys@MnO2 QDs) were synthesized and assessed for the determination of Cu in different food and hair samples. The developed quantum dots were synthesized with the help of cysteine using a straightforward ultrasonic approach to create 3D fluorescent Cys@MnO2 QDs. The resulting QDs' morphological and optical characteristics were carefully characterized. By adding Cu ions, the intensity of fluorescence for the produced Cys@MnO2 QDs was found to be dramatically reduced. Additionally, the applicability of Cys@MnO2 QDs as a new luminous nanoprobe was found to be strengthened by the quenching effect grounded on the Cu-S bonding. The concentrations of Cu2+ ions were estimated within the range of 0.06 to 7.00 µg mL-1, with limit of quantitation equal to 33.33 ng mL-1 and detection limit equal to 10.97 ng mL-1. The Cys@MnO2 QD technique was applied successfully for the quantification of Cu in a variety of foods, including chicken meat, turkey, and tinned fish, as well as in human hair samples. The chance that this novel technique could be a useful tool for figuring out the amount of cysteine in bio-samples is increased by the sensing system's remarkable advantages, which include being rapid, simple, and economical.

Abstract
In this study, a novel "on-off-on" fluorescent probe was suggested for sensitive and selective assay of glutathione (GSH). The as-fabricated nanoswitch employs a Cu2+-sulfur quantum dot system (SQ-dots/Cu2+). The surface reactivity and water solubility of SQ-dots were improved through capping with egg white and bovine serum albumin proteins. The surface functional groups on the surface of double protein-protected SQ-dots enhanced the interaction with Cu2+ ions, resulting in the aggregation induced quenching of SQ-dots. Addition of GSH, a strong Cu2+ ion chelator, disassembles the large aggregates into relatively smaller ones, restoring the fluorescence emission of SQ-dots. Under optimized conditions, the fluorescence intensity was increased by increasing GSH amounts within the range of 0.13-550 μM with a detection limit (S/N = 3) of 0.04 μM. The SQ-dots/Cu2+ system was successfully applied for the detection of GSH in different matrices such as dietary supplements, human serum, and vegetable extract samples. The as-fabricated probe holds great potential for the synthesis of other functionalized SQ-dots for (bio) sensing.

Abstract
Water contamination with harmful ions has grown to be a significant environmental issue on a global scale. Therefore, the fabrication of simple, cost-effective, and reliable sensors is essential for identifying these ions. Herein, co-doping of carbon dots with new caffeine and H3BO3-derived boron (B) and nitrogen (N) was performed (BN@CDs). The as-prepared BN@CDs probe was used for the tandem fluorescence sensing of Al3+ and F- based on "ON-OFF-ON" switches. The BN@CDs nanoswitch has a high quantum yield of 44.8% with λexc. and λem. of 360 nm and 440 nm, respectively. The probe exhibited good stability with different pH, ionic-strengths, and irradiation times. The fluorescence emission of BN@CDs was decreased as the Al3+ concentration was increased with a linear range of 0.03-90 μM and a limit of detection (S/N = 3) equal to 9.0 nM. Addition of F- restored the BN@CDs emission as F- ions form a strong and stable complex with Al3+ ions [Al(OH)3F]-. Therefore, the ratio response (F/F°) was raised by raising the F- ion concentration to the range of 0.18-80 μM with a detection limit (S/N = 3) of 50.0 nM. The BN@CDs sensor exhibits some advantages over other reported methods in terms of simplicity, high quantum yield, and low detection limit. Importantly, the sensor was successfully applied to determine Al3+ and F- in various ecological water specimens with accepted results.

Abstract
The peroxidase-like activity of CdV2O6 nanorods has been considerably improved by modification with N, N-dicarboxymethyl perylene-diimide (PDI) as a photosensitizer. The peroxidase-like behaviors are evaluated by virtue of the colorless chromogenic substrate 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), which is fast changed into blue oxTMB in the presence of H2O2 in only 90 s. PDI-CdV2O6 exhibits high stability at elevated temperatures and PDI-CdV2O6 retains more than 70% of its catalytic activity over a wide range of 15 to 60 °C. The catalytic mechanism of PDI-CdV2O6 is ascribed to the synergistic interaction between PDI and CdV2O6 and the generation of •O2- radicals. Based on the enhanced peroxidase-like activity of PDI-CdV2O6, a selective colorimetric sensor has been constructed for H2O2 and pyrogallol (PG) with detection limits of 36.5 μM and 0.179 μM, respectively. The feasibility of the proposed sensing platform has been validated by detecting H2O2 in milk and pyrogallol in tap water.

Abstract
Novel biomass-derived carbon dots co-doped with nitrogen and sulfur were fabricated through facile and simple synthetic method from manufactured milk powder and methionine as precursors. The as-fabricated platform was used for ratiometric fluorescence sensing of Cu (II) and bisphosphonate drug risedronate sodium. The sensing platform is based on oxidation of o-phenylenediamine by Cu (II) to form 2, 3-diaminophenazine (oxidized product) with an emission peak at 557 nm. The resultant product quenched the fluorescence emission of as-fabricated carbon dots at 470 nm through Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) and inner-filter effect (IFE). Upon addition of risedronate sodium, the formation of 2, 3-diaminophenazine was decreased as a result of Cu (II) chelation with risedronate sodium, recovering the fluorescence emission of carbon dots. The ratio of fluorescence at 470 nm and 557 nm was measured as a function of Cu (II) and risedronate sodium concentrations. The proposed sensing platform sensitively detected Cu (II) and risedronate sodium in the range of 0.01-55 μM and 5.02-883 µM with LODs (S/N = 3) of 0.003 μM and 1.48 µM, respectively. The sensing platform exhibited a good selectivity towards Cu (II) and risedronate sodium. The sensing system was used to determine Cu (II) and risedronate sodium in different sample matrices with recoveries % in the range of 99-103 % and 97.4-103.8 %, and RSDs % in the range of 1.5-3.0 % and 1.8-3.6 %, respectively.

Abstract
2,3-Dihydroxyphenol (DHP) is a phenolic compound that has been used as an additive in biodiesel to avoid the auto-oxidation of biofuels and also in the production of cosmetic products. However, this substance can be released into the environment during its manufacture, transport, disposal and industrial use and can be harmful to health due to its toxicity, and hence, monitoring its presence in different samples is very important. Therefore, this work describes an electroanalytical study of DHP using different carbon-based pastes prepared to evaluate which one would be more promising to be used as an electrochemical platform for DHP quantification. The materials studied (graphite, carbon black and carbon nanotubes) in this work were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and the Boehm method. Voltammetric studies showed that pure carbon black presented a higher current density for detecting DHP than the other materials tested (graphite, carbon black + graphite, carbon nanotubes, carbon nanotubes + graphite). In studying the medium's pH, the highest currents occurred in acid media and acetate buffer solutions. After optimizing the experimental parameters, it was possible to obtain a wide range of linear responses from 0.1 to 10 000 μmol L-1 for DHP and a good limit of detection (LOD) of 0.03 μmol L-1. The selectivity of the electrode was tested for different species that may be present in samples containing DHP. Finally, the electrode was applied to determine DHP in natural water and biodiesel samples, showing recovery values between 98 and 102%, indicating good accuracy.

Abstract
Recently, developments in the field of cosmetics have led to a renewed interest in hair dyeing. However, damage to the hair during the dyeing process has increased hesitation in attempting hair dyeing. As a result, hair dyes with minimal side effects have been in constant demand, and are being developed. In this study, natural-extract polyphenols, pyrogallol, and gallic acid are coordinated by CuCl2 in a NaCl aqueous solution to form an oligomer, which creates an ion-channel coating on the hair surface to protect it. This work attempts to develop fast, simple, and damage-free hair-dye ingredients based on pyrogallol and gallic acid. The morphology and elements of polyphenols coated on hair are characterized. The results reveal that the hair is dyed with the polyphenol-based dye reagent successfully. Moreover, the thickness of the dyed hair continuously rises ten times after dyeing. The tensile strength of the dyed hair is also measured, showing an upward and downward trend. These results reflect the fact that pyrogallol and gallic acid are considered to be the essential and functional polyphenols, and can build ion blocks on hair, which can create new multifunctional coating materials.

Abstract
An one-pot hydrothermal method was developed for synthesis of carbon quantum dots co-doped with copper and nitrogen (Cu, N@CQDs). The synthesized Cu, N@CQDs has unique advantages such as high fluorescence quantum yield (39.1%) and high catalytic activity. Oxidative coupling of amoxicillin (AMX) with 4-aminoantipyrine (4-NH2-APE) in the presence of H2O2 as an oxidant to produce pink quinoneimine chromogen was carried out with the aid of Cu, N@CQDs as a peroxidase-like catalyst. This system was used for the colorimetric and fluorometric assays of AMX with reliable results. Colorimetric method is based on the measurement of a pink-colored product at λmax = 505 nm while the fluorometric assay is based on the quenching of the fluorescence emission of Cu, N@CQDs at 440 nm after excitation at 370 nm. For the colorimetric method, the absorption intensity linearly increased over the concentration range 4.3-110.0 µM with LOD (S/N = 3) of 1.3 µM. For the fluorometric method, the emission intensity of Cu, N@CQDs linearly decreased upon addition of AMX in the concentration range 0.2-120.0 µM with a limit of detection (LOD, S/N = 3) of 0.06 µM. The proposed system was applied to the determination of AMX in different real samples such as pharmaceutical capsules, human serum, milk, and conduit water samples with recoveries in the range 95.8-104.1% and relative standard deviation (RSD %) less than 4.1%.

Abstract
Herein, yellow emissive nitrogen doped graphene quantum dots (N@GQDs) were prepared by a novel advanced thermal driven oxidation. The N@GQDs was functionalized with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) to improve its catalytic performance towards dopamine (DA) detection. The β-CD/N@GQDs exhibited strong fluorescence at λem. = 550 nm after excitation at 460 nm with a quantum yield of 38.6%. The β-CD/N@GQDs showed good peroxidase like activity via catalyzing the oxidation of tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in presence of H2O2 to form blue colored product at λmax = 652 nm. In the colorimetric assay of DA, the detection based on the oxidation of TMB by H2O2 in presence of β-CD/N@GQDs as a catalyst. Then, the color of the blue oxidized TMB (oxTMB) product was reduced by addition of DA. While the fluorometric detection of DA based on the "inner filter effect" of the overlapped emission spectrum of β-CD/N@GQDs with the absorption spectrum of oxTMB, where, addition of DA reduces oxTMB to TMB and restores the fluorescence intensity of β-CD/N@GQDs. Under the optimized conditions, the colorimetric method achieved linearity range of 0.12-7.5 µM and LOD (S/N = 3) of 0.04 µM, while the fluorometric method achieved linearity range of 0.028-1.5 µM and LOD (S/N = 3) of 0.009 µM. The peroxidase like activity of β-CD/N@GQDs was used to detect DA in human plasma and serum samples with good % recoveries. The colorimetric and fluorometric methods exhibited good sensitivity and selectivity toward DA detection.

Abstract
Herein, a novel and rapid fluorometric nanoprobe was constructed for quantitation of dopamine (DA) in presence of biologically interfering compounds. The nanoprobe based on synthesis of yellow emissive nitrogen doped graphene quantum dots (N@GQDs) by advanced thermal driven oxidation. After that, the synthesized N@GQDs was capped with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD), followed by interaction with pyridoxal (PYL) vitamin B6 cofactor. This interaction resulted in diminishing the yellow fluorescence of β-CD/N@GQDs, and appearance of blue emission peak at 420 nm. Upon addition of DA, the blue emission of β-CD/N@GQDs was increased after excitation at λ = 330 nm. Under optimum conditions, the nanoprobe exhibited a linear range of 0.36-400 nM with limit of detection (LOD) of 0.117 nM. In addition, the fluorescent nanoprobe shows high selectivity and can be used for detection of DA in complicated biological matrices and human serum. This strategy might provide a potential tool for clinical diagnosis and biomedical research for DA related diseases.

Abstract
Indigo carmine (IC) dye is hazardous and allergenic for humans even though it has been excessively used in a wide range of industries. Therefore, the quantitative determination of IC is still challenging. Herein, for the first time, we have developed fluorometric and colorimetric dual-mode nanoprobe derived from the ion-pair association complex between the negatively charged IC and positively charged N@C-dots in pH = 3.0. Consequently, the binding between N@C-dots and IC resulted in cyan blue and quenching of N@C-dots fluorescence. The dependence of the fluorescence response on IC concentrations was linear over the range of 0.73-10.0 µM (R2 = 0.9989) with LOD of 0.24 µM. On the other hand, the linearity of the colorimetric method ranged from 9.97 to 80.0 µM (R2 = 0.9986) with LOD of 3.3 µM. The sensor was applied for estimation of IC in fruit juice and soft drink without the need for exhaustive extraction steps.

Abstract
The behaviour of mitoxantrone (MTX), an anthracenedione antineoplastic agent, in different types of organized medium was explored using molecular spectrofluorometry. The original fluorescence and quantum yield of MTX were augmented by about five-fold in the aqueous buffered solution (Britton-Robinson, pH 3.0) by the addition of sodium dodecyl sulfate. Enhancement in the fluorescence intensity did not come from the boost in the ultraviolet (UV) light absorbance of the drug in the presence of micelles but due to shielding of the lowest excited singlet state of the drug from a radiationless process inside the cavity of the micelle. Accordingly, a versatile, sensitive, and feasible spectrofluorimetric method was constructed and evaluated for MTX determination. Fluorescence measurements were performed at 675 nm (λex 610 nm). A linear relationship was shown between fluorescence intensity and drug concentration within the range 0.01-2.0 μg ml-1 of MTX with a correlation coefficient of 0.9999 and a detection limit of 2 ng ml-1 . The developed method was effectively used for analysis of MTX in biological samples and dosage forms. In addition, the method was expanded to study the stability of MTX exposed to different drastic degradations and the kinetic parameters of the degradation were calculated.

"Turn-on" fluorometric probe for α-glucosidase activity using red fluorescent carbon dots and 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine. Mikrochim Acta 2020; 187:498. Abstract
A turn-on method for determining α-glucosidase activity is described using a chemical redox strategy in which the fluorescence of red fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) is modulated. The red fluorescent CDs were prepared using a solvothermal method with p-phenylenediamine and sodium citrate. The excitation and emission maxima of the CDs were 490 and 618 nm, respectively. Ce4+ ions catalyze the oxidation of the colorless substrate 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to give a blue oxidized TMB product (oxTMB). Absorption by oxTMB overlaps with the red light emitted by the CDs because of the fluorescence inner filter effect; therefore the presence of oxTMB decreases the intensity of fluorescence emission by the CDs. However, hydrolysis of L-ascorbic acid-2-O-α-D-glucopyranosyl by the enzyme α-glucosidase causes formation of ascorbic acid . Ascorbic acid reduces oxTMB to TMB, so that the inner filter effect disappeared and the fluorescence recovered. The strategy allows α-glucosidase activity to be successfully determined down to 0.02 U mL-1 and gives a dynamic linear range of 0-5.5 U mL-1. The strategy is very selective for α-glucosidase activity in the presence of potentially interfering substances. The method has been successfully applied to the determination of α-glucosidase activity in spiked human serum samples and gave satisfactory results. Graphical Abstract Schematic of the method used to prepare the carbon dots and the mechanisms involved in determining α-glucosidase activity.

Abstract
Dual-emissive carbon dots (CDs) were fabricated for dual-channel ratiometric fluorometric determination of pH and mercury ion (Hg2+) and intracellular imaging. Dual-emissive CDs were synthesized by one-pot solvothermal treatment of cabbage. The CDs exhibited two distinctive fluorescence emissions at 500 and 678 nm under single excitation at 410 nm. The green emission (500 nm) had reversible linear response to pH (7.0-12.0) due to deprotonation and protonation of surface functional groups and their non-covalent interactions. On the other hand, the red emission (678 nm) had efficient and selective fluorescence response to Hg2+ by formation of non-emission complex between CDs and Hg2+. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) for Hg2+ were 6.25 and 20.63 nM, respectively. The CDs have been successfully applied for label-free ratiometric fluorometric determination of pH and Hg2+ in fish and human serum samples with good recoveries (92.0-108.3%). In addition, the CDs had excellent photostability, low cytotoxicity, and good biocompatibility for intracellular imaging. All in all, the system was multi-functional in determination, high in sensitivity, and excellent in selectivity, which demonstrated wide and promising applicability for biosensing and bioimaging in the future. Abstract
The study of biologically important Cu2+ and S2- ions has drawn great attention in the recent years since an abnormal level of these ions is an indication for health impairment. Therefore, a reliable strategy for effective fluorescence determination of Cu2+ and S2- ions was developed. Simply, the method based on economical plant-dependent thermolysis procedure for efficient green synthesis of water dispersible luminescent polyamine-based carbon dots (PA@C-dots) utilizes Vitis vinifera juice as precursor with a high quantum yield (32.1%) and good photo-stability. The fluorescent PA@C-dots were characterized by different spectroscopical, physical, and structural techniques. Furthermore, the synthesized PA@C-dots can be used as an efficient dual functional fluorescent probe for the sensitive and selective estimation of Cu2+ and S2- ions. The incorporation of Cu2+ ions and their adsorption on the surface of PA@C-dot skeleton leads to the respectable fluorescence quenching of C-dots (turn-off mode). The Cu2+-PA@C-dot was found to be sensitive to S2- ions. The addition of S2- recovers the fluorescence (turn-on mode) of Cu2+-PA@C-dots, thanks to its capacity for withdrawing Cu2+ from the shell of PA@C-dots. Fluorescence quenching in the range of 0.07-60 μM Cu2+ was obtained with LOD and LOQ of 0.02 and 0.066 μM, respectively. Sulfide detection provides linearity in the range of 0.8 to 95 μM with LOD and LOQ of 0.24 and 0.79 μM, respectively. The optimal excitation and emission wavelengths for all experiments are 435 nm and 498 nm, respectively. Experiment results elucidate that the proposed method is suitable for Cu2+and S2- ion detection in environmental water samples. Graphical abstract Green synthesis of polyamine-functionalized nanoprobe by thermolysis method from plant source as bifunctional sensing platform for determination of Cu2+ and S2- in environmental water samples.
