Abstract
Aim: To prepare experimental adhesive (EA) with 1% and without chitosan nanoparticles on dentin conditioned with a conventional technique phosphoric acid (PA) compared with two different contemporary techniques: photodynamic therapy (PDT) and femtosecond laser (FSL). Method: The methodology consisted of synthesis of EA and 1% chitosan-modified adhesive (CMA). Scanning electron microscopy, dentin adhesive interface assessment, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, shear bond strength (SBS), degree of conversion (DC), and bond failure were assessed. Teeth were selected, disinfected, and mounted in acrylic up to the cementoenamel junction. Occlusal enamel was removed and teeth were randomly allocated into groups and conditioned. These included Group 1: samples treated with PA; Group 2: specimens conditioned with methylene blue photosensitizer (MBP) activated by PDT; and Group 3: samples conditioned with FSL. Following different conditioning regimes, specimens were bonded using 1% CMA and EA. The composite buildup was followed by SBS testing and a bond failure assessment. DC was assessed for both EA and CMA. Analysis of variance and Tukey's post hoc test were used to compare the mean and standard deviation of SBS and DC in different experimental groups, with a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: Dentin pretreated with etch and rinse demonstrated the highest bond strength with 1% CMA. Dentin conditioned with MBP activated by PDT and bonded to EA showed the lowest bond scores. Overall SBS values of 1% CMA were better than EA irrespective of the conditioning regime of dentin. The DC was higher in EA adhesive. This was followed by DC in 1% CMA. DC in EA was found to be comparable with 1% CMA. Conclusions: PA remains the gold standard for dentin conditioning. The incorporation of 1% chitosan in adhesive improves SBS and results in no change in DC. The use of FSL in dentin conditioning can be used as an alternative approach as it results in SBS within acceptable limits. The study was approved by the ethical board of King Saud University.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate how the addition of resveratrol nanoparticles (RNPs), which act as an antimicrobial agent, affects the strength of acrylic resin used in orthodontics. METHODS According to ISO 20795-1-2013, 76 cold cure acrylic resin samples (65×10×3.3mm) were prepared. The samples were divided into four groups (19 samples in each group) based on RN concentrations added to 1mL acrylic monomer (0 for control, 256, 512, and 1024μg/mL). Flexural strength was assessed in megapascal (MPa) using a universal testing machine. Data analysis involved nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis analysis of variance and pairwise post-hoc Dunn's test. RESULTS The flexural strength decreased as the concentration of RNPs increased, with the lowest value observed at 1024μg/mL (63.06±5.33MPa). The control group exhibited the highest mean of flexural strength (88.43±4.41MPa), followed by the groups with RNPs at the concentrations of 256μg/mL (82.69±4.41MPa) and 512μg/mL (76.02±4.59MPa). CONCLUSION In conclusion, the addition of RNs to orthodontic acrylic resin had a dose-dependent impact on its flexural strength. Based on the findings, we recommend incorporating RNs at a concentration of 256μg/mL as an antimicrobial agent in orthodontic acrylic resin. However, further research is necessary to assess the long-term effects and clinical applications of this approach.

Abstract
Enterococcus faecalis is among the most resistant bacteria found in infected root canals. The demand for cutting-edge disinfection methods has rekindled research on photoinactivation with visible light. This study investigated the bactericidal activity of femtosecond laser irradiation against vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis V583 (VRE). The effect of parameters such as wavelength and energy density on the viability and growth kinetics of VRE was studied to design an optimized laser-based antimicrobial photoinactivation approach without any prior addition of exogenous photosensitizers. The most effective wavelengths were 430 nm and 435 nm at a fluence of 1000 J/cm2, causing a nearly 2-log reduction (98.6% and 98.3% inhibition, respectively) in viable bacterial counts. The colony-forming units and growth rate of the laser-treated cultures were progressively decreased as energy density or light dose increased at 445 nm but reached a limit at 1250 J/cm2. At a higher fluence of 2000 J/cm2, the efficacy was reduced due to a photobleaching phenomenon. Our results highlight the importance of optimizing laser exposure parameters, such as wavelength and fluence, in bacterial photoinactivation experiments. To our knowledge, this is the first study to report an optimized wavelength for the inactivation of VRE using visible femtosecond laser light.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tooth discoloration is a common concern in antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) using various photosensitizers (PS). Toluidine Blue (TB), Methylene Blue (MB), Phthalocyanine (Pc), and 2-mercaptopyridine-substituted zinc phthalocyanine (TM-ZnPc) are among those studied, but their relative impacts on tooth discoloration remain unclear. AIM This study aimed to compare the effects of TB, MB, Pc, and TM-ZnPc in aPDT on tooth discoloration, utilizing a controlled experimental setup. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study comprised seventy-five single-rooted incisors with root canals. Following meticulous preparation, a standardized area on the crown surface was designated for examination, and precise measurements of the initial tooth colors were recorded. Samples were randomly divided into five groups: Negative control, MB, TM, Pc, and TM-ZnPc. Photoactivation was performed using LED light, and color measurements were taken at multiple time points up to 90 days. Data were converted to Lab* color values of the CIE Lab* color system (International Commission on Illumination, Vienna, Austria), and ΔE values were calculated. Statistical analysis was performed using Two-way ANOVA and Post-Hoc Tukey tests (p < 0.05). RESULTS At day 7 and 30, TM-ZnPc and Pc caused less discoloration compared to MB and TB. TM-ZnPc caused more tooth discoloration compared to Pc (p < 0.05). Compared to baseline, MB and TM-ZnPc caused more tooth discoloration at 30 days and TB caused more tooth discoloration at 90 days (p < 0.05). No significant difference was observed in terms of tooth discoloration at all periods evaluated after Pc application (p > 0.05). All photosensitizers tested in the study caused tooth coloration. CONCLUSION All PS induced clinically detectable tooth discoloration, with TB and MB causing more significant discoloration compared to Pc and TM-ZnPc at certain time points. TM-ZnPc and Pc demonstrated more stable coloration levels over time, suggesting their potential reliability in aPDT applications. This study highlights the importance of selecting appropriate PS to minimize tooth discoloration in aPDT, with Pc showing promise in this regard.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to assess the influence of methylene blue (MB)-mediated adjunctive antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) when compared to conventional mechanical debridement (MD) alone on periodontal clinical and radiographic outcomes among periodontitis patients. METHODS Randomized clinical trials (RCTs) were incorporated by conducting an electronic search in Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed for articles published in English up to August 2023 to address the following focused question based on the PICO format: "Whether the application of MB-mediated aPDT as an adjunctive to MD (Intervention) leads to improved periodontal clinical and/or radiographic outcomes (Outcome) among participants with and without periodontal diseases (Population) as compared to MD alone (Conparison)". The risk of bias (RoB) of the included studies was assessed using the modified Jadad scale. A meta-analysis was conducted, and it included the presentation of the standard mean difference (SMD) along with a 95 % confidence interval (CI). RESULTS In total, 11 studies were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. The meta-analysis demonstrated statistically significant improvements in periodontal plaque index (SMD: -0.72 % [95 % CI: -0.99 % to -0.45 %]; p<0.00001), probing depth (SMD: -0.38 % [95 % CI: -0.57 % to -0.19 %; p<0.00001), and bleeding on probing (SMD: -0.44 % [95 % CI: -0.68 % to -0.20 %]; p = 0.0003) scores at the final follow-up visit after the application of MB-mediated aPDT in comparison with MD alone. Nevertheless, there was no statistically significant difference was observed in periodontal clinical attachment level values (SMD: -0.01 % [95 % CI: -0.21 % to 0.19 %]; p = 0.95) between the control group and the experimental group. Six studies achieved a low RoB, five were rated as having medium RoB, while no study received a high RoB. CONCLUSION MB-mediated aPDT, when used as an adjunct to conventional MD contributes to the improvement of periodontal clinical outcomes including PI, PD, and BOP in patients with periodontitis.

Abstract
The accumulation of dental plaque is a precursor to various dental infections, including lesions, inflammation around dental implants, and inflammation under dentures. Traditional cleaning methods involving physical removal and chemical agents often fall short of eliminating bacteria and their protective biofilms. These methods can also inadvertently lead to bacteria that resist drugs and upset the mouth's microbial harmony. To counter these issues, a new approach is needed that can target and clear away dental plaque, minimize biofilms and bacteria, and thus support sustained dental health. Enter antimicrobial sonodynamic therapy (aSDT), a supplementary treatment that uses gentle ultrasound waves to trigger a sonosensitizer compound, destroying bacterial cells. This process works by generating heat, mechanical pressure, initiating chemical reactions, and producing reactive oxygen species (ROS), offering a fresh tactic for managing dental plaque and biofilms. The study reviews how aSDT could serve as an innovative dental treatment option to enhance oral health.

Abstract
The formation of dental plaque is well-known for its role in causing various oral infections, such as tooth decay, inflammation of the dental pulp, gum disease, and infections of the oral mucosa like peri-implantitis and denture stomatitis. These infections primarily affect the local area of the mouth, but if not treated, they can potentially lead to life-threatening conditions. Traditional methods of mechanical and chemical antimicrobial treatment have limitations in fully eliminating microorganisms and preventing the formation of biofilms. Additionally, these methods can contribute to the development of drug-resistant microorganisms and disrupt the natural balance of oral bacteria. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) is a technique that utilizes low-power lasers with specific wavelengths in combination with a photosensitizing agent called photosensitizer to kill microorganisms. By inducing damage through reactive oxygen species (ROS), aPDT offers a new approach to addressing dental plaque and associated microbial biofilms, aiming to improve oral health outcomes. Recently, photosensitizers have been incorporated into dental materials to create photosensitive dental materials. This article aimed to review the use of photosensitive dental materials for aPDT as an innovative antimicrobial option in dentistry, with the goal of enhancing oral health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/PURPOSE Orthodontic acrylic resins containing antimicrobial photocatalytic nanoparticles aims to reduce oral lesions including denture stomatitis and white spot lesions but they should not imperil its mechanical properties. This systematic review was done to evaluate the effect of various photocatalytic nanoparticles on the flexural strength (FS) of acrylic resins. MATERIALS AND METHODS We systematically searched the PubMed/Medline, Cochrane Library, and Scopus databases from January 2018 to October 2023. The review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, and the quality of the studies was evaluated using the QUIN tool, which is specifically designed to assess the risk of bias in vitro studies. RESULTS Following screening of 1016 initial records, 23 studies were deemed eligible for inclusion. The addition of photocatalytic nanoparticles, such as emodin (Emo), curcumin (Cur), Cur nisin (CurNis), zeolite/zinc oxide (Zeo/ZnO), and Ulva lactuca (U. lactuca), to acrylic resins resulted in a reduction in FS, with the extent of reduction dependent on the nanoparticle concentration. Specifically, the addition of Emo (≥0.5 %), Cur (≥0.5 %), CurNis (≥5 %), Zeo/ZnO (≥2), and U. lactuca (≥1 %) to acrylic resins significantly decreased FS. Conversely, the inclusion of ZnO and titanium dioxide (TiO2) in acrylic resins improved FS, but higher concentrations (≥5 % for TiO2) had a limited positive effect. CONCLUSION Our study supports the use of low concentrations of photocatalytic nanoparticles, such as ZnO (≤2 %), TiO2 (≤3 %), Emo (≤0.5 %), Cur (≤0.5 %), CurNis (≤5 %), and U. lactuca (≤1 %), in orthodontic acrylic resins without compromising FS.

Abstract
Harnessing the power of light and its photonic energy is a powerful tool in biomedical applications. Its use ranges from biomaterials processing and fabrication of polymers to diagnostics and therapeutics. Dental light curable materials have evolved over several decades and now offer very fast (≤ 10 s) and reliable polymerization through depth (4-6 mm thick). This has been achieved by developments on two fronts: (1) chemistries with more efficient light absorption characteristics (camphorquinone [CQ], ~30 L mol-1 cm1 [ʎmax 470 nm]; monoacylphosphine oxides [MAPO], ~800 L mol-1 cm-1 [ʎmax 385 nm]; bisacylphosphine oxide [BAPO], ~1,000 L mol-1 cm-1 [ʎmax 385 nm]) as well mechanistically efficient and prolonged radical generation processes during and after light irradiation, and; (2) introducing light curing technologies (light emitting diodes [LEDs] and less common lasers) with higher powers (≤ 2 W), better spectral range using multiple diodes (short: 390-405 nm; intermediate: 410-450 nm; and long: 450-480 nm), and better spatial power distribution (i.e. homogenous irradiance). However, adequate cure of materials falls short for several reasons, including improper selection of materials and lights, limitations in the chemistry of the materials, and limitations in delivering light through depth. Photonic energy has further applications in dentistry which include transillumination for diagnostics, and therapeutic applications that include photodynamic therapy, photobiomodulation, and photodisinfection. Light interactions with materials and biological tissues are complex and it is important to understand the advantages and limitations of these interactions for successful treatment outcomes. This article highlights the advent of photonic technologies in dentistry, its applications, the advantages and limitations, and possible future developments.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sporotrichosis, a zoonosis caused by animal, mainly cat, scratches or bites, is caused by fungi belonging to the Sporothrix complex. Treatment usually consists in antifungal administration, although treatment failure and hepatotoxicity reports have been noted. Alternative sporotrichosis treatment methods, such as antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT), may, therefore, be indicated. CASE REPORT In this context, this study followed a 56-year-old male renal transplanted patient displaying disseminated sporotrichosis, presenting erythematous skin lesions with ulcerated backgrounds and hardened consistency on the nose, oral and scalp. The lesions were present for about 2 months and the patient coexisted with cats. Intravenous amphotericin B administration was initiated, and immunosuppression was suspended. Seven aPDT sessions were also performed in 48 h intervals on the oral lesions, employing 0.01% methylene blue gel as the photosensitizing agent. After the 4th aPDT session, the patient was discharged, amphotericin B administration was suspended, and the treatment was continued with itraconazole, without immunosuppression. Red laser was applied to the oral lesions after the 7th aPDT session. Significant lesion improvement was observed after the final aPDT session and complete palate lesion repair was noted after two red laser sessions. CONCLUSION These findings indicate that aPDT is a valuable strategy as an adjunct sporotrichosis treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dental caries is the most common oral disease worldwide, and it is estimated to affect 2.3 billion people, with at least 530 million of them being schoolchildren with decayed primary teeth. This condition can rapidly evolve into irreversible pulp inflammation and pulp necrosis and thus requiring endodontic intervention. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a supplementary method to conventional pulpectomy and is used to improve the protocol used for disinfection. AIM The main objective of this study was to evaluate through a systematic review the efficacy of supplementary PDT on the pulpectomy of primary teeth. This review was registered a priori on the PROSPERO database (CRD42022310581). DESIGN Two independent and blinded reviewers carried out a comprehensive search in five databases: PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science. Eligible studies were randomized and nonrandomized clinical trials that evaluated in vivo microbiological load or clinical outcomes after using supplementary PDT in infected primary teeth. RESULTS After the selection process, four studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in this study. Data regarding the sample characteristics and PDT protocols were retrieved. All included trials used phenothiazinium salts as photosensitizer agents. Only one study observed a significant difference in the in vivo microbiological load reduction outcome when performing PDT on primary teeth. The remaining studies all discussed the possible benefits of this intervention; however, none observed a significant difference in this outcome. CONCLUSION In this systematic review, moderate-to-low certainty of the available evidence was observed, and thus, no significant conclusions can be drawn from the findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this randomized clinical trial was to evaluate the effects of photodynamic therapy (PDT) after traditional activated final irrigation protocol (ultrasonically activated irrigation, UAI) on periapical lesion healing after single-visit root canal retreatment. METHODS We included 36 patients with asymptomatic chronic apical periodontitis with periapical lesions larger than 5 mm and teeth sensitive to percussion and palpation, who had previous root canal treatment. All patients who signed informed consent underwent cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to determine and calculate the preoperative volume of the periapical lesion. Patients were randomly distributed into two groups according to the final disinfection protocol: Group 1; UAI (NaOCl, EDTA, and NaOCl), Group 2; UAI + PDT. All patients underwent single-visit root canal retreatment using rotary instrumentation and standardized irrigation (3 %NaOCl) by the same endodontist. The root canals were filled with epoxy resin-based sealer and single-cone gutta-percha, followed by control radiography. After one year, a new CBCT scan of the teeth was performed to calculate the reduction in the initial periapical lesion as a measure of periapical healing. For the statistical analysis, the chi-square test variants, Fisher's exact test and the Fisher-Freeman-Halton test were used at the level of significance set at 5 %. RESULTS There were no significant differences between the groups in terms of age, sex, preoperative and postoperative lesion volume (p > 0.05), and reduction of periapical lesion volume (median, 86.98 % for UAI and 79.72 % for UAI+PDT) (p = 0.970). Additional use of PDT after UAI did not contribute to the healing of periapical lesions. CONCLUSION The UAI and UAI+PDT protocols had equal effects on healing of periapical lesion.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Persistent apical periodontitis after root canal treatment may require surgical retreatment when non-surgical options are ineffective or impractical due to anatomical challenges or iatrogenic errors. Endodontic microsurgery (EMS) is a precise technique that aims to overcome extraradicular biofilm and root morphology issues. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an emerging supplementary disinfection approach that utilizes a photosensitizer agent and light to eliminate microorganisms through oxidative reactions. REPORT A 60-year-old male with persistent apical periodontitis in a left maxillary first molar underwent non-surgical root canal retreatment followed by surgical reintervention due to anatomical complexities. During surgery, PDT was performed using a novel curcumin-based photosensitizer agent. After the procedure, the tooth was retrofilled with bioceramic cement, and photobiomodulation was applied to enhance tissue healing. One year post-surgery, the patient exhibited complete periradicular repair and remained asymptomatic. DISCUSSION EMS is considered a last resort to salvage an endodontically treated tooth and has shown moderate success rates. PDT has demonstrated promise in improving periapical healing and reducing microorganisms. In this case, curcumin, diluted with 2 % chlorhexidine gel, served as an effective photosensitizer agent with antimicrobial properties. Moreover, performing photobiomodulation aided in cell recovery and reduced postoperative discomfort. CONCLUSION The proposed EMS treatment protocol with PDT using curcumin yielded positive outcomes in this case report. Further randomized clinical trials are necessary to assess the efficacy of this approach in EMS. Additionally, further research on curcumin-based photosensitizer agents encapsulated in nanoparticles and enhanced antimicrobial agents is recommended to refine this treatment protocol for routine use.

Abstract
Root canal therapy is a predominant method for treatment of dental pulp and periapical diseases. Conventional methods such as mechanical instrumentations, chemical irrigation and intracanal medicaments pose a huge limitation to root canal disinfection as they kill bacteria and dental stem cells simultaneously. Therefore, much attention has been focused on finding more efficacious antibacterial methods that has no or negligible cytotoxicity for dental stem cells. Herein, we hypothesized that combining antibacterial medicaments with Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) and methylene blue (MB) as a photosensitizer would be effective in reducing death of dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs). To examine this, DPSCs were isolated from third molar teeth through enzymatic digestion. Isolated cells were cultured in αMEM and when reached adequate confluency, were used for further analysis. Cytotoxicity effect of different groups of MB, DAP, MB, LED and their combination on DPSCs was analyzed using MTT assay. DPSCs membrane integrity as a marker of live cells was assessed through measuring lipid peroxidation and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release into extracellular space. Results showed that the combination of LED, MB and TAP or aPDT, MB and DAP was more effective in reducing DPSCs death rate compared to TAP and DAP administration alone. Moreover, Malondialdehyde (MDA) and LDH levels were found to be decreased in cells exposed to combination treatment in comparison with single TAP or DAP therapy. Our study shows the promising perspectives of employing combined aPDT, MB and antibiotic medicaments for reduction of dental stem cell death.

Abstract
In the current study, we synthesized and characterized new BODIPY derivatives (1-4) having pyridine or thienyl-pyridine substituents at meso- position and 4-dibenzothienyl or benzo[b]thien-2-yl moieties at 2-,6- positions. We investigated fluorescence properties and the ability to form singlet oxygen. In addition, various biological activities of BODIPYs such as DPPH scavenging, DNA binding/cleavage ability, cell viability inhibition, antimicrobial activity, antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) and biofilm inhibition properties were performed. BODIPY derivatives BDPY-3 (3) and BDPY-4 (4) have high fluorescence quantum yields as 0.50 and 0.61 and 1 O2 quantum yields were calculated as 0.83 for BDPY-1 (1), 0.12 for BDPY-2 (2), 0.11 for BDPY-3 and 0.23 for BDPY-4. BODIPY derivatives BDPY-2, BDPY-3 and BDPY-4 displayed 92.54 ± 5.41%, 94.20 ± 5.50%, and 95.03 ± 5.54% antioxidant ability, respectively. BODIPY compounds showed excellent DNA chemical nuclease activity. BDPY-2, BDPY-3 and BDPY-4 also exhibited 100% APDT activity against E. coli at all tested concentrations. In addition to these, they demonstrated a highly effective biofilm inhibition activity against Staphyloccous aureus and Pseudomans aeruginosa. BDPY-4 showed the most effective antioxidant and DNA cleavage activity, while BDPY-3 exhibited the most effective antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity.

Abstract
Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) used to sterilize carious dentin may irritate pulp tissues because of tissue-penetrating laser and singlet oxygen generation. This study aimed to assess the effects of aPDT on rat pulp tissues. A cavity formed in a rat maxillary first molar was treated with aPDT. The combined photosensitizer and laser irradiation conditions in the aPDT groups were as follows: methylene blue and 100 mW for 60 s, brilliant blue (BB) and 100 mW for 60 s, BB and 50 mW for 120 s, and BB and 200 mW for 30 s. Each cavity was treated with an all-in-one adhesive and filled with flowable resin. aPDT was not applied for the control. In each group, the rats were sacrificed on postoperative days 1 and 14, and thin sections of the treated teeth were prepared. Pulp tissue disorganization (PTD), inflammatory cell infiltration (ICI), and tertiary dentin formation (TDF) were evaluated. At 1-day evaluation, there were significant differences between the aPDT group and controls with respect to PTD and ICI (p < 0.01); 14 days later, almost all specimens showed tertiary dentin formation. The application of aPDT caused reversible damage to the rat pulp, while in the long term, healing occurred with the formation of tertiary dentin.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of the study is to determine the cytotoxic, genotoxic and inflammatory effects of indocyanine green (ICG) mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT) in direct contact with L-929 mouse fibroblast cells and over a dentin barrier. METHODS Eight groups were evaluated; control (C), group with a dentin barrier (D), ICG applied directly on the cells (ICG), ICG applied over a dentin barrier (D-ICG), only laser applied (L), laser applied over a dentin barrier (D-L), ICG and laser applied directly on the cells (ICG-L), ICG and laser applied over a dentin barrier (D-ICG-L). Cell viability was evaluated via ATP Assay, DNA damage was evaluated via Comet Assay, and inflammatory markers IL-1β and TNF-α were assessed via ELISA test. RESULTS Cell viability decreased in group ICG (p<0.001). Cell viability decrease was higher in Group ICG-L (p<0.001). Cell viability decrease was lower in group D-ICG-L (p>0.05). Group L caused an increase in cell number (p<0.001). DNA damage was observed in ICG, D-ICG, and ICG-L groups (p<0.05). None of the groups displayed an increase of inflammatory markers IL-1β and TNF-α (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS The presence of dentin between ICG and cells acted as a barrier and protected the cells. ICG-mediated PDT did not cause any cytotoxic, genotoxic or inflammatory effect. The use of ICG-mediated PDT for cavity disinfection is acceptable, but at this concentration its use in periodontal pocket disinfection is not recommended due to its cytotoxic and genotoxic properties.

Abstract
This systematic review investigated whether antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) after chemomechanical root canal disinfection (CD) yields a greater microbial load reduction than only CD. An electronic literature search was conducted on four databases up to November 2022, with no language or publication date restrictions. Randomized and non-randomized clinical trials were included if participants had a primary endodontic infection in permanent teeth, and if microbial loads before and after using aPDT were compared. Two researchers independently screened titles and abstracts to determine study eligibility. Assessments included risk of bias and methodological quality. This review was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42020181783). Eight studies were included in the qualitative analysis, and six were eligible for meta-analysis. In the random effects model, aPDT significantly improved the results of root canal disinfection when compared with standard protocols for cleaning and shaping (p = 0.04, 95% CI -1.72, -0.05). Subgroup analysis suggested that aPDT has a better effect on reducing the load of anaerobic microorganisms (p = 0.003, 95% CI -3.36, -0.69). The use of aPDT as an adjunct to chemomechanical disinfection promotes additional reduction of the microbial load and, therefore, seems to improve the results of root canal treatments in permanent teeth with a primary endodontic infection. However, certainty of evidence should be improved.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the clinical and microbiological efficacy of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) in patients with erythematous candidiasis (EC). METHODS This study was a controlled and randomized clinical trial in patients diagnosed with EC, who were allocated into a control group (CG) and experimental group (EG) treated with nystatin oral suspension and aPDT with methylene blue 0.1%, respectively. A clinical index was used to classify the EC lesions from mild to severe and assess the treatment efficacy. Microbiological samples were collected before and after aPDT session and analyzed by counting colony-forming units (CFUs) of Candida and Staphylococcus sp. RESULTS A total of 41 patients (CG (n = 18); EG (n = 23)) were analyzed in our research. Of these, 16 (94.1%) of the CG and 16 (84.2%) of the EG exhibited complete remission of the lesions. Regarding the degree of the lesion, it was observed that the severe lesions were more difficult to present remission, while all the mild and moderate lesions showed complete regression (p = 0.001). The microbiological analysis showed that Candida albicans and Staphylococcus sp. were the most prevalent microorganisms, and the aPDT group showed a decrease in CFUs of these microorganisms after the first aPDT session (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS aPDT proved to be a clinically and microbiologically effective therapy for treating EC. TRIAL REGISTRATION Registered at ClinicalTrials.gov; Set 12th, 2019; No. RBR-8w8599. CLINICAL RELEVANCE aPDT is a promising alternative treatment since it presents satisfactory results and does not cause damage to oral tissues or develop resistance to the treatment.

Abstract
To evaluate the efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) as adjunctive to oral debridement (OD) in the improvement of clinical, microbiological, and pain in patients with necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (NUG). Patients with NUG were split into two groups: Group-OD + PDT received PDT with OD, while Group-OD underwent OD alone. Clinical inflammatory parameters including full mouth plaque scores (FMPS), full mouth bleeding scores (FMBS), and probing depth (PD) were assessed. Fusobacterium nucleatum and Prevotella intermedia were analyzed using the polymerase chain reaction technique. Pain examination was done using various pain scales. Group PDT + OD showed more reduction in FMPS, FMBS, and greater reduction in F. nucleatum and P. intermedia count compared to group OD at 12 weeks follow up (p < 0.01). Group PDT + OD showed significantly lower pain scores at 12 weeks (p < 0.05). PDT was more effective in improving clinical parameters, and reducing bacterial counts and pain in NUG patients than dental scaling alone.

Abstract
To evaluate the effect of the photodynamic therapy (PDT) using with different photosensitizers on the bond strength of BioRoot RCS (BR) to radicular dentin by comparing with AH Plus (AH). The shaped root canals of 80 human mandibular premolars were divided into four groups based on the final disinfection protocol: NaOCl/EDTA, PDT with methylene Blue (MB), PDT with curcumin (CUR) and PDT with toluidine blue O (TBO) (n = 20). Each group was randomly divided into two subgroups (n = 10), according to the endodontic sealer used for obturation (n = 10). The test of push-out bond strength (PBS) was performed using an universal test machine. The data were analysed using ANOVA, Tukey post-hoc, and independent sample t-test (α = 0.05). MB-BR group showed the highest PBS at the cervical level (p < 0.05). The selection of the photosensitizer in PDT influenced adhesion of root canal sealers to radicular dentin.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)-based removable orthodontic appliances are susceptible to microbial colonization due to the surface porosity, and accumulating the biofilms causes denture stomatitis. the present study evaluated the anti-biofilm and antiinflammatory effects of antimicrobial photo-sonodynamic therapy (aPSDT) against multispecies microbial biofilms (Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus sobrinus, and Actinomyces naeslundii) formed on acrylic resin modified with nanoresveratrol (NR). MATERIALS AND METHODS Following the determination of the minimum biofilm inhibitory concentration (MBIC) of NR, in vitro anti-biofilm activity of NR was evaluated. The antibiofilm efficacy against multispecies microbial biofilm including C. albicans, S. aureus, S. sobrinus, and A. naeslundii, were assessed by biofilm inhibition test and the results were measured. To reveal the anti-inflammatory effects of aPSDT on human gingival fibroblast (HGF) cells, the gene expression levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were evaluated via quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). RESULTS According to the results, the MBIC dose of NR against multispecies microbial biofilm was considered 512 µg/mL. The highest biofilm reduction activity was observed in MBIC treated with aPSDT and 2 × MBIC exposed to light emitting diode (LED) and ultrasound waves (UW). The expression level of TNF-α and IL-6 genes were significantly increased when HGF cells were exposed to multispecies microbial biofilms (P<0.05), while after treatment with aPSDT, the expression levels of genes were significantly downregulated in all groups (P<0.05). CONCLUSION Overall, NR-mediated aPSDT reduced the growth of the multispecies microbial biofilm and downregulated the expression of TNF-α and IL-6 genes. Therefore, modified PMMA with NR can be serving as a promising new orthodontic acrylic resin against multispecies microbial biofilms and the effect of this new material is amplified when exposed to LED and UW.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with fixed orthodontic appliances have higher plaque accumulation and gingival inflammation. Our aim was to compare the effectiveness of a light emitting diode (LED) toothbrush with a manual toothbrush in reducing dental plaque and gingival inflammation in orthodontic patients with fixed appliances, and to investigate the effect of the LED toothbrush on Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) biofilm in vitro. METHODS Twenty-four orthodontic patients were recruited and randomly assigned into 2 groups: (1) started with manual and (2) started with LED toothbrushes. After a 28-day usage and 28-day wash-out period, the patients switched to the other intervention. The plaque and gingival indices were determined at baseline and 28 days after each intervention. The patients' compliance and satisfaction scores were collected using questionnaires. For the in vitro experiments, S. mutans biofilm was divided into 5 groups (n = 6) with 15-, 30-, 60-, or 120-sec LED exposure, and without LED exposure as a control group. RESULTS There was no significant difference in the gingival index between the manual and LED toothbrush groups. The manual toothbrush was significantly more effective in reducing the plaque index in the proximal area on the bracket side (P = 0.031). However, no significant difference was found between the two groups in other areas around the brackets or on the non-bracket side. After LED exposure in vitro, the percentages of bacterial viability after LED exposure for 15-120 s were significantly lower compared with the control (P = 0.006). CONCLUSION Clinically, the LED toothbrush was not more effective in reducing dental plaque or gingival inflammation than the manual toothbrush in orthodontic patients with fixed appliances. However, the blue light from the LED toothbrush significantly reduced the number of S. mutans in biofilm when it was exposed to the light for at least 15 s in vitro. Abstract
PURPOSE The present study aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the effectiveness of the contemporary photoactivated disinfection methods on the mechanical features and/or antimicrobial activity of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) dentures bases. METHODS THE FOCUSED RESEARCH QUESTION WAS: : "What is the effect of contemporary photoactivated disinfection methods as compared to conventional disinfection protocols on the mechanical features and/or antimicrobial activity of PMMA dentures bases?". An electronic literature search was carried out by the author and a senior librarian specialized in health sciences on Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus. In vitro investigations evaluating the antimicrobial and/or mechanical effects of photoactivated disinfectants as compared to conventional chemical disinfectants on the microbes formed on PMMA denture bases were included. Meta-analysis was performed for calculating the standard mean difference (SMD) with a 95% confidence interval. RESULTS Four out of eight studies concluded that photoactivated disinfectants, including riboflavin-mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT), hematoporphyrin-mediated PDT, poly-L-glycolic acid loaded with methylene blue, Erbium, chromium-doped yttrium, scandium, gallium, and garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG) laser, erbium-doped yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) laser, and chitosan-mediated PDT, demonstrated a significant reduction in colony-forming unit per milliliter (CFU/mL) of exposed viable colonies of Escherichia coli (E. coli), Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans), Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), and Candida albicans (C. albicans) comparable to the conventionally used chemical disinfectants of PMMA denture bases. Contrarily, two studies concluded that the PMMA denture base colonized with C. albicans and disinfected with conventional chemical disinfectants showed the greatest anti-fungal efficaciousness. All the included studies concluded that the application of photoactivated disinfectants does not negatively impact the mechanical features of the PMMA denture bases colonized with microbes including E. coli, S. mutans, S. aureus, and C. albicans. The meta-analysis revealed statistically significant reduction in C. albicans counts (CFU/mL [Log10]) (p < 0.00001) and improvement in the flexural strength (p = 0.0002) of PMMA-based denture base after the application of conventional disinfectants, while a statistically significant improvement in the fracture strength of PMMA-based denture base was observed after the application of photoactivated disinfectants (p = 0.03). CONCLUSION According to the systematic review (qualitative synthesis), photoactivated disinfectants demonstrated comparable mechanical features and antimicrobial activity of PMMA dentures bases to conventional chemical disinfectants suggesting their potential to be utilized as an alternative to conventional chemical disinfectants. However, the meta-analysis (quantitative synthesis) revealed that the application of conventional disinfectants demonstrated better outcomes related to antimicrobial activity and flexural strength of PMMA-based denture based.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Photodynamic therapy is an alternative anticancer treatment approach that promises high therapeutic efficacy. In this study, it is aimed to investigate the PDT-mediated anticancer effects of newly synthesized silicon phthalocyanine (SiPc) molecules on MDA-MB-231, MCF-7 breast cancer cell lines, and non-tumorigenic MCF-10A breast cell line. METHODS Novel bromo substituted Schiff base (3a), its nitro homolog (3b), and their silicon complexes (SiPc-5a and SiPc-5b) were synthesized. Their proposed structures were confirmed by FT-IR, NMR, UV-vis and MS instrumental techniques. MDA-MB-231, MCF-7 and MCF-10A cells were illuminated at a light wavelength of 680 nm for 10 min, giving a total irradiation dose of 10 j/cm2. MTT assay was used to determine the cytotoxic effects of SiPc-5a and SiPc-5b. Apoptotic cell death was analyzed using flow cytometry. Changes in the mitochondrial membrane potential were determined by TMRE staining. Intracellular ROS generation was observed microscopically using H2DCFDA dye. Colony formation assay and in vitro scratch assay were performed to analyze the clonogenic activity and cell motility. Transwell migration and matrigel invasion analyzes were conducted to observe changes in the migration and invasion status of the cells. RESULTS The combination of SiPc-5a and SiPc-5b with PDT exhibited cytotoxic effects on cancer cells and triggered cell death. SiPc-5a/PDT and SiPc-5b/PDT decreased mitochondrial membrane potential and increased intracellular ROS production. Statistically significant changes were detected in cancer cells' colony-forming ability and motility. SiPc-5a/PDT and SiPc-5b/PDT reduced cancer cells' migration and invasion capacities. CONCLUSION The present study identifies PDT-mediated antiproliferative, apoptotic, and anti-migratory characteristics of novel SiPc molecules. The outcomes of this study emphasize the anticancer properties of these molecules and suggest that they may be evaluated as drug-candidate molecules for therapeutic purposes.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial effect of photodynamic therapy (PDT) against Staphylococcus aureus biofilm on a titanium surface and to compare the differences in the effect of PDT using toluidine blue O (TBO) and methylene blue (MB) as a photosensitizer. METHODS The bacterial strain S. aureus ATCC 25,923 was used. Sandblasted and acid-etched (SLA) disks were divided into the following six groups: phosphate buffer saline (PBS), TBO, MB, PBS with laser (PBS + L), TBO with laser (TBO + L), and MB with laser (MB + L). The laser group samples were irradiated by a cold diode laser for 60 s. After treatment, the number of surviving bacteria was calculated by counting the colony-forming units (CFUs) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) was applied to observe the bacteria on the disk surface. RESULTS The TBO + L and MB + L groups showed significantly lower CFU/ml than the other groups (p < 0.01). The TBO + L group showed significantly lower CFU/ml than the MB + L group (p = 0.032). There was no significant difference between the PBS, TBO, MB, and PBS + L groups. Within the limitations of this in vitro study, PDT with TBO and MB can effectively reduce S. aureus biofilm on SLA titanium surfaces. TBO is more effective than MB as a photosensitizer. PDT with TBO may be applied to the treatment of peri‑implant disease in the future.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of the study was to clinically evaluate the efficacy of photodynamic therapy in treatment of the reticular form of oral lichen planus (OLP). MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty patients aged 40-76, with 40 confirmed OLP lesions in total, underwent photodynamic therapy (PDT) following the authors' own protocol, which used 5% 5-aminolevulinic acid as a photosensitizer applied two hours prior to illumination with a diode lamp emitting light at 630 nm and 300 mW. The therapy comprised of 10 weekly illumination sessions and was clinically evaluated between its completion and the end of a 12-month follow-up. RESULTS While the baseline mean size of all 40 lesions was 2.74 ± 3.03 cm2, it was 2.97 ± 3.4 cm2 for the 30 lesions on the buccal mucosa and 2.02 ± 1.32 cm2 for the remaining 10 on the gingiva and tongue. On completion of the therapy, 37 sites improved, including 14 showing complete remission. From that point, the mean size reduction of 56.2% (1.2 ± 1.4 cm2) rose to 67.88% (0.88 ± 1.3 cm2) 12 months later. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that ALA-mediated photodynamic therapy was effective for the reticular form of OLP and may become an optional or complementary treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE The emergence of peri-implant diseases has prompted various methods for decontaminating the implant surface. This study compared the effectiveness of three different approaches, chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX) combined with erbium-doped yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) laser, photodynamic therapy (PDT), and CHX only, for reducing biofilm vitality from implant-like titanium surfaces. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS The study involved eight volunteers, each receiving a custom mouth device containing eight titanium discs. The volunteers were requested to wear the device for 72 h for biofilm development. Fluorescence microscopy was used to evaluate the remaining biofilm with a two-component nucleic acid dye kit. The vital residual biofilm was quantified as a percentage of the surface area using image analysis software. Sixty-four titanium discs were assigned randomly to one of four treatment groups. RESULTS The percentage of titanium disc area covered by vital residual biofilm was 43.9% (7.7%), 32.2% (7.0%), 56.6% (3.6%), and 73.2% (7.8%) in the PDT, Er:YAG, CHX, and control groups, respectively (mean (SD)). Compared to the control group, the treatment groups showed significant differences in the area covered by residual biofilm (P < 0.001). CHX combined with Er:YAG laser treatment was superior to CHX combined with PDT, and CHX only was better than the control. CONCLUSION Within the current in vitro model's limitations, CHX combined with Er:YAG laser treatment is a valid method to reduce biofilm vitality on titanium discs.

Abstract
The synergic effect of Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans increases dental caries severity. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) is a non-invasive treatment for antimicrobial aspects. However, the current photosensitizers (PS) have many downsides for dental applications. This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of two different Brazilian green propolis (BGP-AF and BGP-AG) as PS for aPDT against these microorganisms. A single-species biofilm was irradiated with crude extracts and their fractions and controls. Such extracts showed the best results and were evaluated in dual-species biofilms. Photodegradation, reactive oxygen species (ROS), cytotoxicity, and color stability assays were also investigated. Reductions higher than 3 log10 CFU/mL (p < 0.0001) occurred for crude BGP in single- and dual-species biofilms. Singlet oxygen was produced in BGP (p < 0.0001). BGP-mediated aPDT delayed S. mutans and C. albicans regrowth after 24 h of treatment (p < 0.0001). Both BGP did not change the color of dental materials (p > 0.05). BGP-AF-mediated aPDT showed 72.41% of oral keratinocyte viability (p < 0.0001). BGP extracts may be used in aPDT against S. mutans and C. albicans. Specifically, BGP-AF may represent a promising PS for dental applications.

Abstract
Dental diseases occur in children with cerebral palsy three times higher than in healthy children. Low values of the unstimulated salivation rate (<0.3 ml per minute), pH and buffer capacity, changes in enzyme activity and sialic acid concentration, as well as increased saliva osmolarity and total protein concentration, which indicates impaired hydration, are the factors in the development of a gingiva disease in case of cerebral palsy. This leads to increased bacterial agglutination and the formation of acquired pellicle and biofilm, leading to the formation of dental plaque. There is a tendency toward an increase in the concentration of hemoglobin and a decrease in the degree of hemoglobin oxygenation, as well as an increase in the generation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) with the use of photosensitizer methylene blue improves blood circulation and the degree of oxygenation in periodontal tissues, as well as eliminates a bacterial biofilm. Analysis of back diffuse reflection spectra makes it possible to conduct non-invasive monitoring determine tissue areas with a low level of hemoglobin oxygenation for precision photodynamic exposure. Aim To improve the effectiveness of phototheranostics methods using, namely PDT with simultaneous optical-spectral control, for the treatment of gingivitis in children with complex dental and somatic status (cerebral palsy). Methods The study involved 15 children (6-18 y.o.) with various forms of cerebral palsy, in particular, spastic diplegia and atonic-astatic form and with gingivitis. The degree of hemoglobin oxygenation was measured in tissues before PDT and on the 12th day. PDT was performed using laser radiation (λ = 660 nm) with a power density of 150 mW/cm2 with a five-minute application of 0.01% MB. The total light dose was 45 ± 15 J/cm2. For statistical evaluation of the results, a paired Student's t-test was used. Results The paper presents the results of phototheranostics using methylene blue in children with cerebral palsy. An increase in the level of hemoglobin oxygenation from 50 to 67% (p < 0.001) and a decrease in blood volume in the microcirculatory bed of periodontal tissues were shown. Conclusion Photodynamic therapy methods with application of methylene blue make it possible to assess the state of the gingival mucosa tissue diseases objectively in real time, and to provide effective targeted therapy for gingivitis in children with cerebral palsy. There is a prospect that they can become widely used clinical methods.

Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of photodynamic therapy (PDT) using toluidine blue O (TBO), curcumin (CUR) and methylene blue (MB) photosensitizers on root canal dentin microhardness by comparing it with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) + ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA).
Materials and methods: The root canals of 100 human premolar teeth were shaped by the R25 file (Reciproc; VDW, Munich, Germany). The working length of the teeth was determined by using a #10 K-file, keeping it 1mm shorter than the tooth apex. The R25 file was used to prepare the root canals. After every three pecking motions, irrigation was performed and a total of 10 mm of distilled water was used. The specimens were randomly distributed according to the disinfection method; NaOCl+EDTA, PDT with TBO, PDT with CUR, PDT with MB and distilled water (DS) (n=20). Grooves were prepared on the buccal and lingual surfaces of the prepared teeth, parallel to the long axis of the tooth, without touching the root canals. The roots were divided into two parts by means of a cement spatula placed in these grooves. Root canal dentin microhardness was evaluated by the Vickers test method. Three measurements were made by applying 300 g of force for 15 seconds and the average was calculated. It was recorded as the Vickers hardness value. The data were analyzed by using the one-way ANOVA and Dunnett’s post hoc tests (α=0.05).
Results: All photosensitizer groups showed significantly higher microhardness value than the groups of DS and NaOCl + EDTA (p0.05).
Conclusions: PDT with CUR obtained the highest radicular dentin microhardness.

Abstract
AIM To assess and compare push-out bond strength (PBS) when canal disinfected with 5.25% NaOCl, 400 nm femtosecond laser, and natural PS activated by PDT (CP and Zn (II) Ce6 methyl ester) on bond efficacy of radicular dentin bonded to glass fiber post. MATERIAL AND METHODS A sum of 40 non-traumatic, cautiously extracted with closed apex human mandibular premolars were collected and decoronated up to the cement-o-enamel junction. Canals of all specimens were cleaned and shaped using a Protaper universal NiTi system via a crown-down approach, then finally dried out and obturated with gutta-percha. Post alignment space was formed with peso reamers and sanitized. Then samples were randomly allocated into four groups as per the radicular dentin designated disinfection protocols. Group 1 disinfected with curcumin photosensitizer + EDTA, group 2: 5.25% NaOCl and EDTA, group 3: Zn (II) Ce6 methyl ester and EDTA and group 4 sanitized with 400 nm fs-laser + EDTA. GFP was cemented into the radicular canal space and specimens were placed in a thermocycler. Segmentation of the root was done at three levels (coronal, middle, and apical) and positioned in a universal testing machine for PBS analysis. Failure mode analysis was performed using a stereomicroscope and statistical analysis was executed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey multiple comparison tests at a statistically significant level of p < 0.05. RESULTS The highest PBS was revealed by group 2 canal disinfected with 5.25% NaOCl +17% EDTA (control) at coronal (9.49 ± 1.42 MPa) and middle (7.545 ± 0.15 MPa) root levels. Whereas, the lowest PBS was displayed by group 3: Zn (II) Ce6 methyl ester +17% EDTA at coronal (6.31 ± 0.54 MPa) middle (4.85 ± 0.11 MPa) root levels respectively. Intergroup comparison presented that radicular dentin disinfected with 400 nm femtosecond laser + 17% EDTA substantiated comparable PBS result to group 2 (control) at all three root levels (p > 0.05). Likewise, root surface disinfection with Curcumin activated by PDT+17% EDTA unveiled no statistically significant result for specimens disinfected with Zn(II) Ce6 methyl ester +17% EDTA(p > 0.05). Furthermore, apical root segments in all groups showed a substantial decrease in PBS value and were comparable (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION The bond efficacy of glass fiber post to radicular dentin disinfected with 400 nm femtosecond laser has the potential to be used as an alternative to conventional sodium hypochlorite.

Abstract
AIM To assess the efficacy of disinfection of caries-effected dentin (CAD) using KTP laser and different decontamination methods using ozonated water (OW), Rose Bengal photosensitizer (RBP), chlorhexidine (CHX), and Er, YAG laser on the shear bond strength (SBS) of adhesive resin bonded to deciduous teeth. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 50 extracted and radiographically verified carious primary molars were collected and scrutinized according to ICDAS criteria. Specimens were allocated randomly into five groups (n = 10) as per the type of CAD disinfectants. KTP laser, OW, RBP, CHX (control), and Er, YAG laser. After cavity sanitization, a resin adhesive (prime and bond NT) was smeared on the dentinal exterior followed by incremental composite filling. SBS evaluation was performed by employing specimens in the universal testing machine. The debonded surface was assessed under 40x magnification in a stereomicroscope to ascertain fracture mode. Statistical analysis was done by using the ANOVA and the Post Hoc Tukey multiple comparison tests (p < 0.05). RESULTS The highest SBS was exhibited by group 2 i.e., when OW was employed for CAD disinfection (10.25 ± 0.24 MPa). Whereas, the lowest SBS bond value was unveiled by samples in group 3 when RBP was applied for dentin surface sanitization (7.85 ± 0.59 MPa).CAD disinfection with KTP laser (8.25 ± 0.41 MPa), CHX (8.19 ± 0.73 MPa), and RBP displayed comparable bond values (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION Ozonated water and Er, YAG laser could be employed as cavity disinfectants in primary teeth as they demonstrated better shear bond strength without jeopardizing the adhesive binding capacity of restorative resins bonded to caries-affected dentin.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate in vitro the efficacy of ultrasound device to remove caries-like dentin and the curcumin-mediated antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) to decontaminate the affected dentin. METHODS Bovine dentin specimens (n = 173) of 4 × 4 × 2 mm were first submitted to Knoop surface microhardness to standardize the specimens (29 ± 3 KHN). Artificial caries lesion was induced by Streptococcus mutans strain by biological model for 7 days. Infected dentin was removed (1 min) with the following techniques: dentin excavator, bur at low-speed rotation and ultrasound device. After that, aPDT application was performed using blue LED under 460 nm. Polarized light microscopy (PLM), removal rate (n = 10), cross-sectional microhardness (n = 10), colony forming units per milliliter (CFU) (n = 9) and confocal laser microscopy (CM) (n = 2) were performed. ANOVA with Welch correction, post-hoc Games-Howell and two-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post-hoc tests were used. RESULTS PLM confirmed the caries lesion formation with a depth of ∼147.9 µm. Groups treated with ultrasound showed lower removal rate (p = 0.001). Regardless of the treatment, the microhardness values increased as function of depth (p ≤ 0.05). Carbide bur showed the highest microhardness value, followed by ultrasound and excavator. CFU and CM showed a significant reduction in S. mutans after aPDT application. CONCLUSION Ultrasound was efficient, since it removed infected dentin, preserving the affected dentin and aPDT can be used as a complementary therapy to decontaminate the affected dentin. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Ultrasound device may help the clinician to remove dentin caries-like lesions since it is a conservative technique and provided the removal of infected dentin, preserving the affected dentin. aPDT application may be used as a complimentary technique to promote antibacterial effect and possibly minimize the risk of secondary caries.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an adjunctive treatment that aims to inactivate microorganisms through an oxidative reaction produced by irradiating a photosensitizing agent. The quest for improved root canal disinfection has sought supplementary methods when performing chemomechanical procedures. From this perspective, PDT protocols were proposed as an auxiliary approach in endodontics. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate publication metrics and research trends related to this scope. METHODS This review is reported in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 recommendations. Two blinded and independent reviewers systematically searched five electronic databases until December 2021. The acquired bibliometric parameters were analyzed through descriptive statistics and graphical mappings with VOSViewer software. RESULTS The search retrieved 342 studies from 84 journals originating from 33 countries. About 85% of the included studies were published over the last decade. Most of the available evidence is laboratory-based (74.5%), and the main clinical outcomes evaluated were microbiological load reduction and postoperative pain. Mayram Pourhajibagher is the researcher with the most publications as the first author (n = 16). Tehran University of Medical Sciences carried out the highest number of studies (n = 29), and Photodiagnosis and Photodynamic Therapy is the journal that most published on the theme (n = 111). CONCLUSIONS This bibliometric analysis mapped and discussed the scientific progress and publication metrics in PDT in endodontic research. Additionally, future perspectives were highlighted and should focus on discovering new photosensitizer agents, standardizing optimal photoactivation protocols, and conducting more clinical-oriented research.

Abstract
The present study aims to discuss the main factors involving the use of 5-aminolevulinic acid together with red LED light and its application in endodontic treatment through a narrative review and a case report. Persistence of microorganisms remaining on chemical-mechanical preparation or intracanal dressing is reported as the leading cause of failure in endodontics. Photodynamic therapy has become a promising antimicrobial strategy as an aid to endodontic treatment. Being easy and quick to apply, it can be used both in a single session and in several sessions, as well as not allowing forms of microbial resistance. 5-aminolevulinic acid in combination with red LED light has recently been studied in many branches of medicine, with good results against numerous types of bacteria including Enterococuss faecalis. The case report showed how bacterial count of CFU decreased by half (210 CFU/mL), after 45 min of irrigation with a gel containing 5% of 5-aminolevulinic acid compared to the sample before irrigation (420 CFU/mL). The subsequent irradiation of red LED light for 7 min, the bacterial count was equal to 0. Thus, it is concluded that the use of 5-aminolevulinic acid together with red LED light is effective in endodontic treatment.

Abstract
Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) and Candida albicans (C. albicans) are prominent microbes associated with rapid and aggressive caries. In the present study, we investigated the antimicrobial efficacy, cytotoxicity, and mechanism of toluidine blue O (TBO)-mediated antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) and potassium iodide (KI). The dependence of KI concentration, TBO concentration and light dose on the antimicrobial effect of aPDT plus KI was determined. The cytotoxicity of TBO-mediated aPDT plus KI was analyzed by cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay. A singlet oxygen (1O2) probe test, time-resolved 1O2 detection, and a 1O2 quencher experiment were performed to evaluate the role of 1O2 during aPDT plus KI. The generation of iodine and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) were analyzed by an iodine starch test and Amplex red assay. The anti-biofilm effect of TBO-mediated aPDT plus KI was also evaluated by counting forming unit (CFU) assay. KI could potentiate TBO-mediated aPDT against S. mutans and C. albicans in planktonic and biofilm states, which was safe for human dental pulp cells. 1O2 measurement showed that KI could quench 1O2 signals, implicating that 1O2 may act as a principal mediator to oxidize excess iodide ions to form iodine and H2O2. KI could highly potentiate TBO-mediated aPDT in eradicating S. mutans and C. albicans due to the synergistic effect of molecular iodine and H2O2.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Considering the importance of disinfecting dentin and enamel after cavity preparation and the possible effect of disinfection methods on induction of various reactions in the tooth structure the aim of the present study was to evaluate microleakage of composite resin restoration after disinfecting the prepared dentin and enamel surface with antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) with toluidine blue (TBO) and indocyanine green (ICG). MATERIALS AND METHODS Standard class V cavities were prepared on buccal surface of 71 human premolar teeth. The samples were randomly divided into 3 groups based on disinfection method: Group 1: conventional disinfection method with Phosphoric acid 37% as the control; Group 2: aPDT with TBO and diode laser with wavelength of 635 nm; Group 3: aPDT with ICG and diode laser with wavelength of 808 nm. All the cavities were restored with composite resin (3M™ Filtek™ Z250). After thermocycling and immersing in 0.5% basic fuchsin, the samples were prepared for microleakage evaluation under a stereomicroscope. Data was analyzed with Kruskal-Wallis and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests at P < 0.05. RESULTS There were no significant differences in the microleakage of occlusal and gingival margins between the TBO and control groups (P > 0.05). Also, the microleackage of occlusal margins between groups was not significantly different (P > 0.05) but microleackage of gingival margins of ICG group was lower than two other groups in a meaningful way (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Photodynamic therapy with ICG as disinfecting agent in cavity preparations before composite resin restorations decreases the microleackage of gingival margins.

Abstract
Cutaneous fungal infections are common in humans and are associated with significant physical and psychological distress to patients. Although conventional topical and/or oral anti-fungal medications are commonly recommended treatments, drug resistance has emerged as a significant concern in this patient population, and safer, more efficacious, and cost-effective alternatives are warranted. Recent studies have reported effectiveness of photodynamic therapy (PDT) against fungal infections without severe adverse effects. In this review, we briefly discuss the mechanisms underlying PDT, current progress, adverse effects, and limitations of this treatment in the management of superficial and deep fungal infections.

Abstract
AIM The present study intended to evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) of resin cement bonded to caries affected dentin (CAD) after disinfection with rose Bengal (RB), Ti-Sapphire Laser, Ammonium Hexafluorosilicate (NH4)2[SiF6], and ozonated water (O3) MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 100 extracted human mandibular molars were acquired using caries severity code, 6 of the ICDAS criteria. To achieve homogeneity and prevent size-biased distributions, the average cavity preparation of all specimens had a depth of 2 mm and a breadth of 3 mm. Specimens were divided into five groups (n = 20) at random according to type of disinfection. Group 1: control group, Group 2: RB, Group 3: O3, Group 4: Ti-sapphire laser, and Group 5: (NH4)2[SiF6]. All specimens were etch and rinsed, bonding agent was applied and restored with resin cement. Estimation of SBS was performed by placing samples (10/group) in universal testing machine. Stereomicroscope under 40 × magnification was employed for failure mode analysis (FMA). Statistical analysis was executed using the ANOVA and the Tukey multiple test (p<0.05). RESULTS The highest SBS was demonstrated in the control group when CAD bonded to resin cement without disinfection (18.22±1.14 MPa). Likewise, the lowest SBS values were unveiled by CAD disinfection with O3 (12.44±1.36 MPa). Similarly, CAD when disinfected with RB (16.25±1.01 MPa) and Ti-sapphire laser (16.25±1.22 MPa) bonded to resin cement exhibited comparable bond results (p>0.05). CONCLUSION Caries affected dentin when treated with etch and rinse technique without the use of disinfectant displayed the highest SBS. However, it was seen that utilization of various disinfectants has altered the adhesion capacity or bonding efficacy of caries-affected dentin.

Abstract
AIM The present study aimed to assess the antimicrobial efficacy of hematoporphyrin derivative, sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), glutaraldehyde (GaH), and a chlorhexidine (CHX) on mass loss (ML), microhardness, and surface roughness (Ra) of acrylic denture base colonized with C. Albicans. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 40 heat cure acrylic resin dentures were fabricated and inoculated by the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) of C. Albicans in an in-vitro situation. Specimens were divided into four groups (n=10) based on the method of disinfection. Hematoporphyrin derivatives, 1% NaOCl, 2% GaH, and 4% CHX.The pre and post candida (CFU/ml) counts were recorded before and after immersion. ML, microhardness, and Ra of acrylic denture were also assessed. Statistical analysis was executed for CFU/mL (log10) for exposed C. Albicans by two-way ANOVA and Tukey's multiple tests (p>0.05). For normality of the data, Dunnet's Simultaneous test was performed. RESULTS In terms of candida strain analysis, pretreatment to posttreatment comparisons revealed a reduction in mean Candida count in all groups (p<0.05). The highest ML value after post candida disinfection of acrylic denture was observed in 2% GaH (1.587 ± 0.25) treated specimens. The least microhardness value was found in group 1 when treated with hematoporphyrin (0.97 ± 0.22 VHN) which was significantly different from other groups (p<0.05). Group 1 surface treated with hematoporphyrin derivate (1.84 ± 0.22 μm) showed the highest Ra values (p<0.05). CONCLUSION Acrylic denture base resin colonized with C. Albicans when treated with a chemical disinfectant of 4% chlorhexidine displayed the highest antimicrobial efficacy with reduced mass loss, less surface roughness, and maximum denture hardness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study investigated the effect of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (PDT), using methylene blue (MBO) and photobiomodulation therapy (PT), on the alveolar bone of rats submitted to bisphosphonate-induced osteonecrosis of the maxillaries (OMB) model using zoledronic acid (ZA). METHODS Sixty rats divided into six groups were used: SALINE, PDT, ZA, ZA+PDT, ZA+PT, and ZA+MBO. Three weekly administrations (Days 0, 7, and 14) of ZA 0.20 mg/kg or saline solution were performed. After one month (Day 42), the exodontia of the left lower first molars were performed. An additional dose of ZA was administered at Day 49. PDT was performed on days 42, 45, 49, and 54. One month after exodontia (Day 70), the animals were euthanized to obtain samples for imaging and microscopic analysis. ANOVA/Bonferroni tests were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS The ZA+PDT group showed a significantly lower percentage of apoptotic osteocytes than the ZA group (p<0.001). The ZA+MBO, ZA+PT, and PDT groups significantly reduced the number of mononuclear cells compared to the ZA group (p<0.001). The ZA+PT and ZA+PDT groups showed a significant reduction in the number of CD 68+ (p<0.001) and CD3+ (p=0.002) cells compared to the ZA group. The number of cells expressing INF-y had a significant reduction in the groups co-treated with PT and PDT compared to the ZA group (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS We conclude that PDT and PT attenuated the severity of OMB and the inflammatory process due to a reduction of macrophages, T lymphocytes, and cytokines that stimulate the activity of these cells.

Abstract
5, 10, 15, 20-Tetrakis(3-hydroxyphenyl)chlorin (temoporfin) is a photosensitizer used in photodynamic therapy for oral cancer and periodontal disease treatment. This study determined the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) of temoporfin. Additionally, the combination of potassium iodide (KI) or antimicrobial agents in oral pathogens under hypoxic or normoxic conditions were determined. We also evaluated the biofilm removal effect and detected the expressions of the antibiotic resistance-related genes and biofilm formation-related genes of methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The results provided reveal that the combination of the temoporfin and KI had a synergistic effect of reducing the MICs and MBCs of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus paracasei under normoxic and hypoxic conditions due to increasing H2O2 production. Temoporfin increased the biofilm removal of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Enterococcus faecalis, and Staphylococcus aureus under normoxic condition, and it reduced the antibiotic resistance-related genes expression of MRSA. The combination of temoporfin with ampicillin or chlorhexidine significantly enhanced the bactericidal effect on MRSA. This study provides a potential application of temoporfin on the clinical side against oral pathogens and the prevention of oral diseases.

Abstract
AIM The present study aimed to evaluate the impact of Photodynamic therapy (PDT) and Er,Cr:YSGG laser (ECL) adjunct to nonsurgical mechanical debridement (NSMD) in comparison to conventional NSMD in overweight individuals with peri‑implant disease on peri‑implant inflammatory parameters and cytokine levels of IL-6 and TNF-α in Peri-implant crevicular fluid (PICF) MATERIALS AND METHODS: Recruitment of volunteers was performed from the outpatient department according to predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Group 1 consisted of obese participants who underwent peri‑implant mechanical debridement (MD); group 2, obese participants who experienced MD adjunct to ECL, and in group 3, obese participants were treated with MD and adjunct PDT. Clinical periodontal parameters, plaque index (PI), bleeding index (BI) and probing depth (PD) along with crestal bone loss (CBL) were assessed at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months. PICF was collected to evaluate the levels of IL-6 and TNF-α. Kruskal-Wallis and Bonferroni post hoc test were employed for the comparison of peri‑implant inflammatory parameters and PICF cytokine profiles among the study groups. RESULTS Clinical peri‑implant parameters (PI, BI and PD) at baseline among subjects in group 1, group 2 and group 3 were comparable (p > 0.05). At 3 months follow up, mean scores of peri‑implant PI, BI, and PD (P <0.05) in group 1 (control) were significantly higher compared to group 2 (ECL) and 3 (PDT) (p < 0.05). At 6 months follow-up, PI and BI mean scores among groups 1, 2, and 3 were comparable (p>0.05). At 6 months participants in groups 2 and 3 noted significant difference (p<0.05) compared to baseline with no difference noted in the control group (p>0.05). CONCLUSION Photodynamic therapy and Er, Cr: YSGG adjunct to NSMD demonstrated significant improvement in peri‑implant inflammatory parameters in obese individuals. Multicentric clinical trials are suggested to extrapolate the findings of the present study.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The objective of this study was to investigate the action of photodynamic therapy on pain control after endodontic treatment in asymptomatic teeth with a primary infection, within a single visit. METHODS Sixty (60) single-rooted teeth with pulp necrosis and periapical lesions were selected and randomly divided into two (2) groups (n=30), according to the protocol; a control group (CG) and a group using photodynamic therapy (aPDT). The canals were instrumented with Reciproc files # 25 up to 40 along the entire length of the canal, using 2% chlorhexidine gel as the auxiliary chemical substance, followed by irrigation with sterile saline. The canals were filled with Endomethasone N cement, 0.005% methylene blue, using AsGaAl diode laser, 660 nm wavelength, 100 mW of power and 9 J of energy, using optical fibers with 365 µm in diameter. RESULTS Pain intensity was assessed at 8, 12, 24, 48, 72 hours and 1 week after endodontic treatment using a visual analogue scale. The level of pain was classified as none (0), mild (1-3), moderate (4-7) or severe (8-10). The data were at a significance level of 5%. There was a statistically significant difference (p<0.05) in the periods of 8, 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours between the control group and the aPDT group. After 1 week, there was no statistically significant difference. CONCLUSIONS It is concluded that photodynamic therapy had a significant effect on decreasing post-endodontic treatment pain in teeth with necrotic pulp and asymptomatic periapical lesions.
