Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Mandibular condylar fractures in pediatric patients may exhibit distinct epidemiological characteristics attributed to their unique growth and development phase, as well as various anatomical, physiological, biomechanical, and behavioral factors that differentiate them from adults. This study aimed to investigate the demographics, injurious factors, classifications, clinical manifestations, and treatments of pediatric mandibular condylar fractures, as well as the concomitant injuries in maxillofacial and other body parts. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study analyzed the clinical data of 189 pediatric patients with mandibular condylar fractures between 2011 and 2022. Variables investigated included age, gender, timing of onset, causes, classification of condylar fracture, concomitant injuries, clinical manifestations, and treatment modalities. RESULTS A total of 189 patients, a higher proportion of boys compared to girls was observed, with the highest incidence rate in children aged 1-3 years. They occurred primarily in July, June, and September as well as on Saturdays and Sundays. The most prevalent cause of mandibular condylar fractures was falls from heights in 73 patients (38.62%). Pediatric patients exhibited a higher susceptibility to condylar head fractures. A significant majority (81.48%) of these fractures were accompanied by soft tissue injuries in the maxillofacial region, with the chin being particularly vulnerable to injury. In addition, 61.90% of pediatric patients experienced fractures in other areas of the maxillofacial region, with the mandibular symphysis being the most commonly affected site. Dental trauma predominantly occurred in the anterior region (44.97%). Notably, a substantial proportion (28.04%) of cases also presented with multiple systemic injuries. CONCLUSIONS The characteristics of pediatric mandibular condylar fractures exhibit distinct features in terms of age, gender, timing of onset, etiology, location and type, the presence of concomitant maxillofacial soft/hard tissue injuries and multiple systemic injuries, as well as clinical manifestations and treatment modalities. Therefore, clinicians should pay special attention to the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric condylar fractures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Domestic violence (DV) encompasses a series of abusive behaviors, perpetrated in a family environment, against individuals of all ages and genders. Injuries to the head, neck, and face are frequent findings among victims of abuse, negatively impacting their quality of life. Although oral and maxillofacial injuries (OMFI) and traumatic dental injuries (TDI) are commonly diagnosed among DV victims, their prevalence is still unknown. This systematic review was aimed to assess the prevalence of OMFI and TDI among victims of DV. METHODS The protocol of the review was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023424235). Literature searches were performed in eight electronic databases, up to August 7th, 2023. Observational studies published in the Latin-roman alphabet and reporting the prevalence of OMFI and/or TDI were included. The Joanna Briggs Institute's critical appraisal tool, checklist for prevalence studies, was used for quality assessment. Results were presented as qualitative and quantitative syntheses. RESULTS Seventeen studies, totaling 12,375 victims of domestic violence, were included. Meta-analyses showed an overall prevalence of 29% (95% CI: 15%-48%, I2 = 99%) and 4% (95% CI: 1%-10%, I2 = 98%) for OMFI and TDI, respectively. Higher pooled prevalence for OMFI (41%, 95% CI: 13%-46%, I2 = 99%) was demonstrated in samples with only women. OMFI was less prevalent (20%) among DV victims under 18, while TDI was lower among adults (1%). Hospital samples presented higher pooled prevalence of OMFI (32%), and forensic data from fatal victims presented higher prevalence of TDI (8%). CONCLUSION The overall prevalence of OMFI and TDI in DV victims was 29% and 4%, respectively. Women victims of DV presented higher rates of OFMI (41%) and TDI (6%).

Abstract
AIMS Children and adolescents who are affected by trauma may have complications that are more serious and dangerous. Herein, a meta-analysis to evaluate the prevalence of maxillofacial trauma caused by various etiologies according to the geographic regions of the world among children and adolescents was conducted. MATERIALS AND METHODS A comprehensive search was performed in four databases of PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Scopus from January 1, 2006 until July 7, 2021. To evaluate the quality of included articles, an adapted version of the Newcastle-Ottawa scale was used. The prevalence of maxillofacial trauma was estimated by event rates and 95% confidence intervals in relation to etiology and geographic region of study population. RESULTS Through search in the databases and the electronic sources, 3071 records were identified, and 58 studies were eligible for inclusion in the meta-analysis. A total of 264,433 maxillofacial trauma cases were reported by all included studies. Globally, the overall prevalence of maxillofacial trauma was highest due to Road Traffic Crashes (RTC) (33.8%) followed by falls (20.7%), violence (9.9%), and sports (8.1%) in children/adolescents. The highest prevalence of maxillofacial trauma were observed in African population (48.3%) while trauma due to falls was most prevalent in Asian population (44.1%). Maxillofacial trauma due to violence (27.6%) and sports (13.3%) were highest in North Americans. CONCLUSION The findings demonstrate that RTC was the most prevalent etiology of maxillofacial trauma in the world. The prevalent causes of maxillofacial trauma differed between the regions of study population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Contact-sports are known to have higher risk of orofacial injuries due to the bodily contact with other players or equipment. Kabaddi is a traditional contact-sport of India that has gained an international recognition. There is a paucity of data regarding prevalence of traumatic dental and orofacial injuries among the Kabaddi players. Hence this study aimed to assess the prevalence, distribution and pattern of orofacial injuries among the Kabaddi players of Delhi and NCR region. MATERIAL AND METHODS This observational cross-sectional study was designed as per the best practices of epidemiology and reported as per the STROBE guidelines. The sample size was calculated as 440 and comprised of 10-18 years old players of either gender. Cluster random sampling was performed and the information was collected by one-calibrated evaluator by using a self-designed proforma. The injuries were classified as per standard criteria and the description of each episode was recorded. Statistical analysis was performed using the Statistical software-STATA-version-14(StataCorpLLC,Texas,USA). RESULTS Total of 393 players were included in the study (Males-295, Females-98) with majority of them between 15 and 18 years of age. The prevalence of traumatic episode was 49.11% and the prevalence orofacial-trauma was 44.02%.The frequency of extraoral-injuries was higher when compared to the intraoral injuries, with orbit(26.67%) being the commonest-site. Most of the players had not received adequate emergency treatment in the first incident which had improved in the second. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of traumatic orofacial injuries in 10-18 years old Kabaddi players of Delhi-NCR region was found to be 44.02% while the prevalence of traumatic episodes was 49.11%. The prevalence of dental injuries was 5.1%. Majority of the players perceived that Kabaddi can lead to orofacial-injuries.

Abstract
Background/Aims Paediatric maxillofacial trauma accounts for 15% of all maxillofacial trauma but remains a leading cause of mortality. The aim of this prospective, multicentric epidemiological study was to analyse the characteristics of maxillofacial fractures in paediatric patients managed in 14 maxillofacial surgery departments on five continents over a 1‐year period. Methods The following data were collected: age (preschool [0–6 years], school age [7–12 years], and adolescent [13–18 years]), cause and mechanism of the maxillofacial fracture, alcohol and/or drug abuse at the time of trauma, fracture site, Facial Injury Severity Scale score, associated injuries, day of the maxillofacial trauma, timing and type of treatment, and length of hospitalization. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS software. Results Between 30 September 2019 and 4 October 2020, 322 patients (male:female ratio, 2.3:1) aged 0–18 years (median age, 15 years) were hospitalized with maxillofacial trauma. The most frequent causes of the trauma were road traffic accidents (36%; median age, 15 years), followed by falls (24%; median age, 8 years) and sports (21%; median age, 14 years). Alcohol and/or drug abuse was significantly associated with males (p < .001) and older age (p < .001). Overall, 474 fractures were observed (1.47 per capita). The most affected site was the mandibular condyle in children <13 years old and the nose in adolescents. The proportion of patients who underwent open reduction and internal fixation increased with age (p < .001). Conclusion The main cause of paediatric maxillofacial fractures was road traffic accidents, with the highest rates seen in African and Asian centres, and the frequency of such fractures increased with age. Falls showed an inverse association with age and were the leading cause of trauma in children 0–6 years of age. The choice of treatment varies with age, reflecting anatomical and etiological changes towards patterns more similar to those seen in adulthood.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic forced many governments to impose nation-wide lockdowns. Government legislation forced limited travel on the population with restrictions on the normal way of life to limit spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The aim of this study is to explore the effects of lockdown on the presentation of maxillofacial trauma in a level I trauma centre. METHODS Comparative analysis was carried out using prospective and retrospective review of all consecutive patients admitted with any maxillofacial fracture in the lockdown period between 15th March and 15th June 2020 with the same period in 2019 to a Regional Trauma Maxillofacial Surgery Unit. Data included basic demographics and mechanism of injury including alcohol/drug influence, polytrauma, site of injury and treatment modality including escalation of care. RESULTS Across both periods, there were a total of one hundred and five (n = 105) recorded episodes of traumatic fractures with fifty-three (n = 53) in the pre-lockdown cohort and fifty-two (n = 52) in the lockdown. Included patients were significantly (p = 0.024) older during lockdown (mean age 41.44 years SD 20.70, range 5-96) with no differences in gender distribution between cohorts (p = 0.270). Patients in lockdown were more likely to be involved in polytrauma (p < 0.05) and have sustained their injury by cycling/running or any outdoor related activity (p = 0.013). Lockdown saw a significant reduction in alcohol and drug related violence (p < 0.05). Significantly more patients required operative management (p = 0.038). CONCLUSION Local lockdowns form part of the governments public health strategy for managing future outbreaks of SARS-CoV-2. Our study showed no significant reduction in volume of trauma during lockdown. It is vital that hospitals maintain trauma capacity to ensure that patients are treated in a timely manner.

Abstract
Study Design Retrospective case series review. Objective Participation in athletics is common in high school and college students and presents an increased risk of injury in this age-group. Previous studies have included National Collegiate Athletic Association athletes but not high school athletes. Here we report the trends of maxillofacial injuries in high school students. Methods Patients presenting to a level 1 trauma center with maxillofacial injuries were identified by chart query with associated International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision codes for facial fractures between October 2015 and October 2017. Data collected included age, sport, fracture type, need for surgery, associated concussion, and time to return to play were measured. New York State Public High School Athletic Association regional high school sports participation data from 2016 to 2018 were used to calculate incidence. Results A total of 33 patients aged 13 to 19 years were identified. Baseball, basketball, and lacrosse were most frequently associated with maxillofacial trauma. Annual incidence rates for mandible fractures in high school athletes were 0.037%, 0.012%, and 0.01% for lacrosse, baseball, and basketball, respectively. Annual fracture incidence rates for midface fractures in high school athletes were 0.17%, 0.018%, and 0.01% for baseball, lacrosse, and basketball, respectively. Conclusion Maxillofacial fractures are uncommon injuries among athletes but present with serious implications including surgical correction. Baseball was strongly associated with midface fractures despite being considered a noncontact sport. Improved facial protection across all sports will be imperative at reducing the incidences of these injuries. Level of Evidence Level 4.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Dental trauma (DT) occurs frequently in children and adolescents. Therefore, understanding the factors associated with its occurrence in these age groups is important to establish specific preventive measures. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships of lip coverage, overjet, and open bite to dental trauma in Brazilian children and adolescents. MATERIAL AND METHODS The review protocol was registered in the PROSPERO database (CRD42020156290) and the bibliographic search was performed in nine electronic databases until July 2020. The studies included were observational, performed in Brazil, with healthy children and adolescents (0-19 years old), and without the restriction of date or language. Two reviewers assessed the individual risk of bias of the eligible studies with a standardized checklist. The meta-analyses were stratified by dentition stage and age range using fixed or random effects, odds ratio (OR) as the effect measure, and 95% confidence interval. The heterogeneity across studies was assessed with the I² test and the GRADE approach assessed the certainty of evidence. RESULTS The search presented 2493 initial results, from which 55 met the eligibility criteria and were included. Most studies (67%) presented a low risk of bias and were published between 2000 and 2019. Children and adolescents with inadequate lip coverage are 1.86-2.36 times more likely to suffer from DT, while those with increased overjet are 1.94-3.11 times more likely. Children with primary dentitions and anterior open bites are 1.76 (95% CI: 1.20-2.59) times more likely to suffer from DT. The certainty of evidence varied from very low to moderate. CONCLUSIONS Inadequate lip coverage, increased overjet, and anterior open bite are associated with the occurrence of dental trauma in Brazilian children and adolescents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Road traffic collisions (RTC) are known to be one of the major causes of maxillofacial trauma (MFT). The road user factor is of crucial importance in the prevalence, severity, and treatment of maxillofacial injuries. The aims of the study were to determine the prevalence of maxillofacial trauma among road users, to illustrate injury patterns and to identify road users at high risk. METHODS This historical prospective multi-center study was based on Israel's Trauma Registry between 2008-2018, which included 4829 hospitalized patients following RTC with MFT. Data were analyzed according to six road user types (vehicle driver, passenger, bicyclist, motorcyclist, pedestrian, and e-bike/scooter), maxillofacial injury location, and maxillofacial treatment. RESULTS MFT, which accounted for 5% of the hospitalized RTC injuries, was not equally distributed among road users, as bicyclists and e-bike/scooters were more prone to maxillofacial trauma (7.2% and 10.1%, respectively) than vehicle drivers (3.2%). Children (age 0-14 years) comprised almost half of the cyclists, 25% of the pedestrians and 20% of the passengers. Some MFT patients experienced multiple injuries, with the majority involving jaw and facial bones and to a lesser extent the mouth, teeth, gingivae, and alveolar bone (mouth and dento-alveolar (DA) trauma). Approximately 30% of hospitalized road casualties with MFT underwent MF surgery, with the need for surgery lowest among pedestrians. CONCLUSION Hospitalized road casualties had different types of MFT in terms of prevalence, location, severity, and treatment, depending on the road user type.

Abstract
An analysis of the mortality of children and adolescents as a result of road injuries in Nizhny Novgorod, Volgograd, Krasnoyarsk, Yaroslavl regions over the past 5 years is presented. The relevance of the topic is due to the large number of deaths of minors as a result of road traffic accidents on the roads of the Russian Federation. The impact of qualitative factors (gender, age, season, type of motor vehicle accident) on the number of deaths was evaluated. We used the mathematical-statistical method - the Pearson criterion. We revealed similar general patterns of mortality from road injuries, despite some differences in the territorial distribution of this indicator. We established the need to create a unified information and analytical center, which will concentrate information on cases of traffic accidents throughout the region, including information from units of the forensic medical examination service.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/PURPOSE To retrospectively analyze the epidemiological features, clinical diagnosis, and treatment of 610 patients with maxillofacial fractures, while providing a reference for the prevention and optimized treatment of maxillofacial fractures. METHODS Data of patients with maxillofacial fractures who were treated and followed up at the Second People's Hospital of Kashi Prefecture from June 2012 to April 2018 were summarized. The epidemiological features, clinical manifestations, fracture sites, treatment methods, and results were analyzed. RESULTS The highest incidence was in the age range of 20 to 49 years. The main cause of fracture was traffic injury. Mandibular fractures accounted for 37.77%, zygoma and zygomatic arch fractures for 37.00%, and maxillary fractures for 21.19%. Atypical zygomatic arch fractures were more common in the maxilla, followed by Le Fort I and II fractures. Closed fractures accounted for 85.97%. Many (73.39%) patients were treated with computed tomography 3-dimensional (3D)-mediated precision modified incision internal fixation with satisfactory results. CONCLUSIONS There is a high incidence of maxillofacial fractures among young men, especially in summer, with the most common injuries being traffic-related injuries. The most common site is the mandible, followed by the zygomatic arch, zygomatic complex, and maxilla. Computed tomography 3D-mediated precision modified incision internal fixation can achieve satisfactory results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Very few studies have been performed to evaluate cranio-maxillofacial trauma diagnosed in hospitals in children and adolescents. The aim of this study was to perform an analysis of oral and cranio-maxillofacial trauma in the aforementioned population. MATERIALS AND METHODS A hospital-based retrospective study, which reviewed 1438 patient records, was conducted at the "Teresina Emergency Hospital", Brazil. Data regarding demographics, day of the week on which trauma occurred, type of injury, etiology, anatomic trauma site, time of hospital admission, and associated comorbidities (or injuries) were collected. RESULTS There were 1092 (75.9%) males and 346 (24.1%) females. The largest group was adolescents aged between 13 and 18 years (956, 66.5%). The majority lived in urban areas (69%). Trauma occurred most frequently during the week. The most prevalent etiology was road traffic accidents involving motorcycles (771, 53.6%) causing facial and skull fractures (598, 41%). The most prevalent soft tissue lesions were facial abrasions (49%), followed by injuries to the cheek (16.7%). Comorbidities associated with craniofacial trauma were present in 82%, with complications from traumatic brain injuries being the most prevalent (65.6%) Dental trauma was recorded in only 81 cases (5.6%). CONCLUSION Male adolescents living in urban areas were most affected by craniofacial trauma. The most common cause was road traffic accidents involving motorcycles, resulting in facial and skull fractures. Complications from traumatic brain injuries were the most common associated injuries.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to evaluate the scientific evidence regarding the risk factors for maxillofacial injuries among victims of traffic accidents. METHOD A systematic review of articles published until February 2017 was carried out in the following databases: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane Library. Studies were selected by two independent reviewers (ϰ = 0.841). The risk of bias in the selected studies was assessed using an adapted version of the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale for observational studies. RESULTS A total of 2703 records were found, of which only three articles fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were analyzed, including 422 244 patients. The male/female ratio ranged from 3.4: 1 to 6: 1. All eligible studies performed the multivariate statistical analysis. Eleven risk factors for maxillofacial traumas were identified: victim's gender (P < 0.05), age group (P < 0.05), residence region (P < 0.05), impact characteristics (P < 0.05), increased net change in velocity due to collision (P < 0.05), increase in occupant's height (P < 0.05), nonuse of protective equipment (P < 0.05), type of accident (P < 0.05), time of occurrence (P < 0.05), lesion severity (P < 0.05), and occurrence of concomitant lesions (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION The results suggest that sociodemographic characteristics, as well as those related to the collision patterns and circumstances of traffic accidents, may influence the occurrence of maxillofacial injuries. However, the results should be interpreted with caution due to the high heterogeneity among studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is little consensus regarding the prevalence and distribution of underlying systemic diseases among patients with pyoderma gangrenosum. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to synthesize existing data on the prevalence of associated systemic diseases in patients with pyoderma gangrenosum. METHODS We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies in MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Scopus (1823-2017). The quality of evidence was assessed using a modified Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. A meta-analysis was performed using random-effects models to estimate pooled prevalence rates with 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS Twenty-one eligible studies comprising 2611 patients with pyoderma gangrenosum were included in the quantitative synthesis. The overall random-effects pooled prevalence of associated systemic diseases was 56.8% (95% confidence interval 45.5-67.4). The leading underlying disease was inflammatory bowel disease (17.6%; 95% confidence interval 13.0-22.7), followed by arthritis (12.8%; 95% confidence interval 9.2-16.9), hematological malignancies (8.9%; 95% confidence interval 6.5-11.6), and solid malignancies (7.4%; 95% confidence interval 5.8-9.1). In 16.3% (95% confidence interval 7.7-27.1) of cases, the onset of pyoderma gangrenosum was attributed to the pathergy phenomenon. CONCLUSIONS More than half of patients with pyoderma gangrenosum present with a relevant underlying disease. Inflammatory bowel disease and arthritis are the most frequently associated diseases. Relative to the reported literature, the pooled prevalence of arthritis and hematological malignancies is lower, while the pooled prevalence of solid malignancies is higher. Owing to the high level of heterogeneity among most of the comparisons, results should be interpreted with caution.
