Evidence linking calcium to increased organo-mineral association in soils

Responses of particulate and mineral-associated organic carbon to temperature changes and their mineral protection mechanisms: A soil translocation experiment

Mineral protection mechanisms are important in determining the response of particulate organic carbon (POC) and mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC) to temperature changes. However, the underlying mechanisms for how POC and MAOC respond to temperature changes are remain unclear. By translocating soils across 1304 m, 1425 m and 2202 m elevation gradient in a temperate forest, simulate nine months of warming (with soil temperature change of +1.41 °C and +3.91 °C) and cooling (with soil temperature change of -1.86 °C and -4.20 °C), we found that warming translocation significantly decreased POC by an average of 10.84 %, but increased MAOC by an average of 4.25 %. Conversely, cooling translocation led to an average increase of 8.64 % in POC and 13.48 % in MAOC. Exchangeable calcium (Caexe) had a significant positive correlation with POC and MAOC during temperature changes, and Fe/Al-(hydr)oxides had no significant correlation or a significant negative correlation with POC and MAOC. Our results showed that POC was more sensitive than MAOC to temperature changes. Caexe mediated the stability of POC and MAOC under temperature changes, and Fe/Al-(hydr)oxides had no obvious protective effect on POC and MAOC. Our results support the role of mineral protection in the stabilization mechanism of POC and MAOC in response to climate change and are critical for understanding the consequences of global change on soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics.

Elucidating Amendment Resources for Reclaiming Efficacy of Sodic Soils around Abaya and Chamo Lakes, South Ethiopia Rift Valley

BACKGROUND

Sodic soils are harmful to agricultural and natural environments in Ethiopia's semi-arid and arid regions, leading to soil degradation and reduced productivity. This study investigated how amendment resources could help improve the chemical properties of sodic soils around the Abaya and Chamo Lakes in the South Ethiopia Rift Valley.

METHODS

A factorial experiment was conducted to study the effects of gypsum (GYP) and farmyard manure (FYM) on sodic soil reclamation. The experiment had four levels of GYP (0, 50, 100, and 150%) and four levels of FYM (0, 10, 20, and 30 tons ha-1), with three replications. The pots were incubated for three months and leached for one month, after which soil samples were collected and analyzed for chemical properties. ANOVA was performed to determine the optimal amendment level for sodic soil reclamation.

RESULTS

The study found that applying 10 ton FYM ha-1 and gypsum at 100% gypsum required (GR) rate resulted in a 99.8% decrease in exchangeable sodium percentages (ESP) compared to untreated composite sodic soil and a 1.31% reduction over the control (GYP 0% + FYM 0 ton ha-1). As a result, this leads to a decrease in soil electrical conductivity, exchangeable sodium (Ex. Na), and ESP values. The results were confirmed by the LSD test at 0.05. It is fascinating to see how different treatments can have such a significant impact on soil properties. The prediction models indicate that ESP's sodic soil treatment effect (R2 = 0.95) determines the optimal amendment level for displacing Ex. Na from the exchange site. The best estimator models for ESP using sodic soil treatment levels were ESP = 1.65-0.33 GYP for sole gypsum application and ESP = 1.65-0.33 GYP + 0.28 FYM for combined GYP and FYM application, respectively.

CONCLUSION

The study found that combined GYP and FYM applications reduced ESP to less than 10% in agriculture, but further research is needed to determine their effectiveness at the field level.

Self-assembled silk fibroin cross-linked with genipin supplements microbial carbonate precipitation in building material

The process of microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) is known to effectively improve engineering properties of building materials and so does silk fibroin (SF). Thus, in this study, an attempt was taken to see the improvement in sand, that is, basic building material coupled with MICP and SF. Urease producing Bacillus megaterium was utilized for MICP in Nutri-Calci medium. To improve the strength of SF itself in bacterial solution, it was cross-linked with genipin at the optimized concentration of 3.12 mg/mL. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra confirmed the crosslinking of SF with genipin in bacterial solution. In order to understand how such cross-linking can improve engineering properties, sand moulds of 50 mm3 dimension were prepared that resulted in 35% and 55% more compressive strength than the one prepared with bacterial solution with SF and bacterial solution only, respectively with higher calcite content in former one. The FTIR, SEM, x-ray powder diffraction spectrometry and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses confirmed higher biomineral precipitation in bacterial solution coupled with genipin cross-linked SF. As the process of MICP is proven to replace cement partially from concrete without negatively influence mechanical properties, SF cross-linked with genipin can provide additional significance in developing low-carbon cement-based composites.

Calcium promotes persistent soil organic matter by altering microbial transformation of plant litter

Calcium (Ca) can contribute to soil organic carbon (SOC) persistence by mediating physico-chemical interactions between organic compounds and minerals. Yet, Ca is also crucial for microbial adhesion, potentially affecting colonization of plant and mineral surfaces. The importance of Ca as a mediator of microbe-mineral-organic matter interactions and resulting SOC transformation has been largely overlooked. We incubated 44Ca labeled soils with 13C15N labeled leaf litter to study how Ca affects microbial transformation of litter and formation of mineral associated organic matter. Here we show that Ca additions promote hyphae-forming bacteria, which often specialize in colonizing surfaces, and increase incorporation of litter into microbial biomass and carbon use efficiency by approximately 45% each. Ca additions reduce cumulative CO2 production by 4%, while promoting associations between minerals and microbial byproducts of plant litter. These findings expand the role of Ca in SOC persistence from solely a driver of physico-chemical reactions to a mediator of coupled abiotic-biotic cycling of SOC.

Association between soil organic carbon and calcium in acidic grassland soils from Point Reyes National Seashore, CA

Organo-mineral and organo-metal associations play an important role in the retention and accumulation of soil organic carbon (SOC). Recent studies have demonstrated a positive correlation between calcium (Ca) and SOC content in a range of soil types. However, most of these studies have focused on soils that contain calcium carbonate (pH > 6). To assess the importance of Ca-SOC associations in lower pH soils, we investigated their physical and chemical interaction in the grassland soils of Point Reyes National Seashore (CA, USA) at a range of spatial scales. Multivariate analyses of our bulk soil characterisation dataset showed a strong correlation between exchangeable Ca (CaExch; 5-8.3 c.molc kg-1) and SOC (0.6-4%) content. Additionally, linear combination fitting (LCF) of bulk Ca K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectra revealed that Ca was predominantly associated with organic carbon across all samples. Scanning transmission X-ray microscopy near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (STXM C/Ca NEXAFS) showed that Ca had a strong spatial correlation with C at the microscale. The STXM C NEXAFS K-edge spectra indicated that SOC had a higher abundance of aromatic/olefinic and phenolic C functional groups when associated with Ca, relative to C associated with Fe. In regions of high Ca-C association, the STXM C NEXAFS spectra were similar to the spectrum from lignin, with moderate changes in peak intensities and positions that are consistent with oxidative C transformation. Through this association, Ca thus seems to be preferentially associated with plant-like organic matter that has undergone some oxidative transformation, at depth in acidic grassland soils of California. Our study highlights the importance of Ca-SOC complexation in acidic grassland soils and provides a conceptual model of its contribution to SOC preservation, a research area that has previously been unexplored.

Contrasting catchment soil pH and Fe concentrations influence DOM distribution and nutrient dynamics in freshwater systems

Organic matter (OM) quantity, quality, and nutrient dynamics within twelve shallow lakes in the Czech Republic were assessed in the context of catchment soil pH and iron (Fe) concentration. The catchments of the lakes were classified into two categories: (i) slightly acidic (soil pH = 5.1-6.3) with Fe-rich soils (H_Fe; Fe = 315-344 mg kg^-1 in Mehlich 3 extract); and (ii) neutral (soil pH = 6.8-7.6) with Fe-poor soils (L_Fe; Fe = 126-259 mg kg^-1 in Mehlich 3 extract). The quality of OM in the two lake types was characterized using a combination of spectroscopic techniques (UV-Vis, fluorescence, and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy). We show that dissolved nutrient and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations, as well as the amount of aromatic and protein-like compounds in the water column and sediment porewater were significantly (p < 0.01) lower in the H_Fe lakes compared to the waterbodies located within L_Fe catchments. The FTIR analyses of the H_Fe sediments contained higher relative concentrations of aromatic compounds with hydroxyl-containing functional groups and carbohydrates, while more aliphatic and oxidised OM was found in the L_Fe lake sediments. These results suggest that the pH value of catchment soils and, particularly, their Fe content have profound geochemical effects on the mobility of OM and nutrients in the sediments of recipient waters. Because the OM-Fe association stabilises OM in sediments, waterbodies within L_Fe catchments are likely more vulnerable to increasing eutrophication and oxygen depletion compared to those in H_Fe catchments and this has important implications for water quality management, risk assessment, and predictions of aquatic ecosystem vulnerability under conditions of accelerating climate change.

Interactions between organic matter and Fe oxides at soil micro-interfaces: Quantification, associations, and influencing factors

Iron (Fe) oxides are widely recognized to prevent the degradation of organic matter (OM) in environments, thereby promoting the persistence of organic carbon (OC) in soils. Thus, discerning the association mechanisms of Fe oxides and OC interactions is key to effectively influencing the dynamics and extent of organic C cycling in soils. Previous studies have focused on i) quantifying Fe oxide-bound organic carbon (Fe-OC) in individual environments, ii) investigating the distribution and adsorption capacity of Fe-OC, and iii) assessing the redox cycling and transformation of Fe-OC. Furthermore, the widespread application of high-tech instrumentation and methods has greatly contributed to a better understanding of the mechanism of organic mineral assemblages in the past few decades. However, few literature reviews have comprehensively summarized Fe-OC distributions, associations, and characteristics in soil-plant systems. Here, studies investigating the Fe-OC contents among different environments are reviewed. In addition, the mechanisms and processes related to OM transformation dynamics occurring at mineral-organic interfaces are also described. Recent studies have highlighted that diverse interactions occur between Fe oxides and OC, with organic compounds adhering to Fe oxides due to their huge specific surfaces area and active reaction sites. Moreover, we also review methods for understanding Fe-OC interactions at micro-interfaces. Lastly, developmental prospects for understanding coupled Fe-OC geochemical processes in soil environments at molecular- and nano-scales are outlined. The summary suggests that combined advanced techniques and methods should be used in future research to explore micro-interfaces and in situ descriptions of organic mineral assemblages. This review also suggests that future studies need to consider the functional and spatial complexity that is typical of soil/sediment environments where Fe-OC interactions occur.

Spotted knapweed (Centaurea stoebe) creates a soil legacy effect by modulating soil elemental composition in a semi-arid grassland ecosystem

Invasive plants such as spotted knapweed (Centaurea stoebe) are particularly detrimental to fragile ecosystems like semi-arid grasslands in the interior British Columbia, impacting aboveground and belowground ecology. Physical removal of C. stoebe has been one of the most popular invasive species management strategies, but the impact of C. stoebe removal on soil has hardly been studied. Here, we examine the legacy effect of C. stoebe on soil elemental composition and ecosystem function following its removal in the Lac Du Bios Grasslands Protected Area, British Columbia. First, we selected 40 paired C. stoebe invaded and control (uninvaded) plots and removed all vegetation from these plots. We planted Festuca campestris seedlings in these plots and harvested and weighed the biomass after four months. Additionally, we quantified total carbon and nitrogen in soil. We observed that C. stoebe invaded plots had significantly lower F. campestris biomass. Moreover, the total carbon and nitrogen content, and carbon/nitrogen ratio were significantly lower in C. stoebe invaded plots. We further analyzed 12 common soil elements and found the elemental composition was significantly different in C. stoebe invaded plots compared to controls. We investigated the impact of elemental composition on soil ecosystem functions (such as total soil carbon, total soil nitrogen, and F. campestris productivity). Our analysis revealed significant relationships amongst the elemental composition and total soil carbon and nitrogen, and F. campestris productivity. The results indicate that C. stoebe exerts a legacy effect by altering the soil elemental composition that may subsequently impacts soil ecosystem functions such as plant productivity and total carbon and nitrogen content.

Cadmium-tolerant bacteria: current trends and applications in agriculture

Cadmium (Cd) is considered a toxic heavy metal; nevertheless, its toxicity fluctuates for different organisms. Cadmium-tolerant bacteria (CdtB) are diverse and non-phylogenetically related. Because of their ecological importance these bacteria become particularly relevant when pollution occurs and where human health is impacted. The aim of this review is to show the significance, culturable diversity, metabolic detoxification mechanisms of CdtB and their current uses in several bioremediation processes applied to agricultural soils. Further discussion addressed the technological devices and the possible advantages of genetically modified CdtB for diagnostic purposes in the future.

Is the climate change mitigation effect of enhanced silicate weathering governed by biological processes?

A number of negative emission technologies (NETs) have been proposed to actively remove CO₂ from the atmosphere, with enhanced silicate weathering (ESW) as a relatively new NET with considerable climate change mitigation potential. Models calibrated to ESW rates in lab experiments estimate the global potential for inorganic carbon sequestration by ESW at about 0.5-5 Gt CO₂  year^-1 , suggesting ESW could be an important component of the future NETs mix. In real soils, however, weathering rates may differ strongly from lab conditions. Research on natural weathering has shown that biota such as plants, microbes, and macro-invertebrates can strongly affect weathering rates, but biotic effects were excluded from most ESW lab assessments. Moreover, ESW may alter soil organic carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas emissions by influencing physicochemical and biological processes, which holds the potential to perpetuate even larger negative emissions. Here, we argue that it is likely that the climate change mitigation effect of ESW will be governed by biological processes, emphasizing the need to put these processes on the agenda of this emerging research field.
