Abstract
Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive subtype of breast cancer that lacks expression of the nuclear steroid receptors that bind estrogens (ER) and progestogens (PRs) and does not exhibit HER2 (Human epidermal growth factor 2) receptor overexpression. Even in the face of initially effective chemotherapies, TNBC patients often relapse. One primary cause for therapy-resistant tumor progression is the activation of cellular stress signaling pathways. The glucocorticoid receptor (GR), a corticosteroid-activated transcription factor most closely related to PR, is a mediator of both endocrine/host stress and local tumor microenvironment (TME)-derived and cellular stress responses. Interestingly, GR expression is associated with a good prognosis in ER+ breast cancer but predicts poor prognosis in TNBC. Classically, GR's transcriptional activity is regulated by circulating glucocorticoids. Additionally, GR is regulated by ligand-independent signaling events. Notably, the stress-activated protein kinase, p38 MAP kinase, phosphorylates GR at serine 134 (Ser134) in response to TME-derived growth factors and cytokines, including HGF and TGFβ1. Phospho-Ser134-GR (p-Ser134-GR) associates with cytoplasmic and nuclear signaling molecules, including 14-3-3ζ, aryl hydrocarbon receptors (AhR), and hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs). Phospho-GR/HIF-containing transcriptional complexes upregulate gene sets whose protein products include the components of inducible oncogenic signaling pathways (PTK6) that further promote cancer cell survival, chemoresistance, altered metabolism, and migratory/invasive behavior in TNBC. Recent studies have implicated liganded p-Ser134-GR (p-GR) in dexamethasone-mediated upregulation of genes related to TNBC cell motility and dysregulated metabolism. Herein, we review the tumor-promoting roles of GR and discuss how both ligand-dependent and ligand-independent/stress signaling-driven inputs to p-GR converge to orchestrate metastatic TNBC progression.

Abstract
PURPOSE Given that risk reduction and healthy lifestyles can prevent 4 in 10 cancers, it is important to understand what survivors believe caused their cancer to inform educational initiatives. METHODS In this secondary analysis, we analyzed cancer survivor responses on the Causes Subscale of the Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire, which lists 18 possible causes of illness and a free text question. We used descriptive statistics to determine cancer survivors' agreement with the listed causes and conducted separate partial proportional odds models for the top three causes to examine their associations with sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. Content analysis was used to examine free text responses. RESULTS Of the 1,001 participants, most identified as Caucasian (n = 764, 77%), female (n = 845, 85%), and were diagnosed with breast cancer (n = 656, 66%). The most commonly believed causes of cancer were: stress or worry (n = 498, 51%), pollution in the environment (n = 471, 48%), and chance or bad luck (n = 412, 42%). The associations of sociodemographic and clinical variables varied across the models. Free text responses indicated that hereditary and genetic causes (n = 223, 22.3%) followed by trauma and stress (n = 218, 21.8%) and bad luck or chance (n = 79, 7.9%) were the most important causes of cancer. CONCLUSIONS Study results illuminate cancer survivors' beliefs about varying causes of their cancer diagnosis and identify characteristics of survivors who are more likely to believe certain factors caused their cancer. Results can be used to plan cancer education and risk-reduction campaigns and highlight for whom such initiatives would be most suitable.

Abstract
Epidemiological results on the link between chronic stress and cancer initiation have been inconsistent. This study examined the relation between chronic biological stress, indicated as hair cortisol (HairF) and hair cortisone (HairE), and cancer incidence, adjusting for metabolic syndrome (MetS) components. We analyzed HairF and HairE samples from 6341 participants from the population-based cohort Lifelines in 2014. A linkage with the Dutch Nationwide Pathology Databank (Palga) provided the cancer incidence from 2015 to 2021. The association between dichotomized HairF and log-transformed HairE (LogHairE) and cancer incidence was estimated using Cox regression. MetS components were evaluated as confounders or moderators. Of the 2776 participants with known HairF levels and no cancer history, 238 developed cancer. The HairF level did not predict cancer incidence (HR: 0.993, 95%CI: 0.740-1.333). No confounders or moderators were identified. Among the 4699 participants with known HairE levels and no cancer history, 408 developed cancer. There was no association between LogHairE and cancer incidence (HR: 1.113, 95%CI: 0.738-1.678). When including age as a confounder and gender as a moderator, LogHairE was statistically significantly associated with cancer incidence (HR: 6.403, 95%CI: 1.110-36.92). In a population-based cohort, chronic biological stress, measured by HairE, was associated with cancer incidence, after controlling for age and gender.

Abstract
Two interesting papers explore the beliefs of individuals (general population, or cancer survivors) on the causes of cancer. They reveal a huge discrepancy between scientifically proven factors and spontaneous opinions, that consider "stress" as the major cause of cancer. This is understandable in terms of psychological needs, and must be taken into account in cancer information campaigns.

Abstract
Breast cancer affected more than 2.3 million women in 2022 and is the most diagnosed cancer among women worldwide. The incidence rates are greater in developed regions and are significantly higher among women with higher education and socioeconomic status. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that the way women live their lives may impact their risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer. This systematic review aimed to identify what is known about the causes and risk factors of breast cancer, excluding genetic causes. A comprehensive systematic search identified 2387 systematic reviews, 122 were included and six overall themes identified. In our "top list" with the 36 most important findings, a study of breast density had the highest effect size for increasing the risk of breast cancer, and a high sex-hormone-binding globulin level was the most protective factor. Many of the included studies investigating the same topics had conflicting results. The conclusion from this evidence synthesis reveals a lack of consensus of factors associated with the causes and risk of breast cancer. These findings suggest that recommendations about lifestyle and breast cancer should be made with caution.

Abstract
Noradrenaline and adrenaline, and their cognate receptors, are currently accepted to participate in cancer progression. They may also participate in cancer initiation, although their role in this phase is much less explored. The aim of this work was to study the influence of adrenergic stimulation in several processes related to breast cancer carcinogenesis, using several adrenergic agonists in the MCF-10A non-tumorigenic breast cells. Activation of the β-adrenoceptors promoted an epithelial phenotype in MCF-10A cells, revealed by an increased expression of the epithelial marker E-cadherin and a decrease in the mesenchymal markers, N-cadherin and vimentin. MCF-10A cell motility and migration were also impaired after the β-adrenoceptors activation. Concomitant with this effect, β-adrenoceptors decrease cell protrusions (lamellipodia and filopodia) while increasing cell adhesion. Activation of the β-adrenoceptors also decreases MCF-10A cell proliferation. When the MCF-10A cells were cultured under low attachment conditions, activation the of β- (likely β2) or of α2-adrenoceptors had protective effects against cell death, suggesting a pro-survival role of these adrenoceptors. Overall, our results showed that, in breast cells, adrenoceptor activation (mainly through β-adrenoceptors) may be a risk factor in breast cancer by inducing some cancer hallmarks, providing a mechanistic explanation for the increase in breast cancer incidences that may be associated with conditions that cause massive adrenergic stimulation, such as stress.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Psychological stress can cause various mental and physical health problems. The previous results on stress and oral health are inconsistent, possibly because of the narrow stress measurements. We aimed to examine the association between a broader range of stressful life events and oral health among workers. METHODS This cross-sectional study analyzed anonymous individual data from a national survey in Japan. Data on stressful life events, oral health problems which are one or more of tooth pain, gum swelling/bleeding, and difficulty chewing, and covariates were obtained using a self-reported questionnaire. Covariates used included gender, age group, and disease under treatment. Logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the association between stressful life events and oral health problems. We then estimated the causal treatment effects of stress using the augmented inverse-probability weighting (AIPW) method. RESULTS Among the 274,881 subjects, 152,850 men (55.6%) and 122,031 women (44.4%) with a mean age of 47.0 (standard deviation, 14.4) years, 4.0% reported oral health problems, with a prevalence of 2.1% among those without any stress. The prevalence increased with stress score, reaching 15.4% for those with the maximum stress score. The adjusted odds ratio of this group compared to those without any stress was 9.2 (95% confidence interval [CI], 8.2-10.3). The estimated prevalence of oral health problems by the AIPW analysis was 2.2% (95% CI, 2.1-2.3%) for those without any stress and 14.4% (95% CI, 12.1-16.7%) for those with the maximum stress scores. CONCLUSION There was a clear dose-response association between stressful life events and oral health problems.

Abstract
Many studies have reported that gynecologic cancer diagnosis, surgery, adjuvant therapy, and survivorship can be extremely stressful for many people during their cancer journey, and most cancer survivors have experienced stress after cancer, which impacts their quality of life. Importantly, healthy stress management will assist patients in overcoming obstacles in their lives and enhance both the quality of life and the cancer adjustment process. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between stress, coping strategies, and quality of life among gynecologic cancer survivors and to assess the mediating effects of coping on the relationship between quality of life and stress. A series of regression models and Sobel test were conducted to investigate whether coping strategies mediated the relationship between stress and quality of life. Stress was a predictor of quality of life. Acceptance was the mediator between stress and quality of life. Tailored programs that foster coping strategies, such as the strategy of acceptance, to reduce stress and maintain quality of life in this vulnerable group need to be developed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies examining the relationships of stressful life events and cancer yielded inconsistent findings, while relevant evidence in mainland China is scarce. The current study sought to determine whether experience of stressful life events was associated with cancer prevalence in Chinese population. METHODS We used cross-sectional data from the China Kadoorie Biobank study which that recruited 0.5 million Chinese adults aged 30 to 79 from 2004 to 2008. Logistic regression models were used to estimate adjusted odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for cancer associated with stressful life events reported at baseline. RESULTS Among the 461,696 participants included in this analysis, 2,122 (0.46%) had self-reported cancer with the mean (SD) age was 57.12 (9.71) years. Compared to those without any stressful life event, participants who experienced 1 and 2 or more events had significantly higher odds of cancer, with the ORs of 1.80 (95% CI: 1.58-2.05) and 3.05 (2.18-4.28). For categories of work-, family-, and personal-related events, the OR of cancer was 1.48 (1.07-2.05), 2.06 (1.80-2.35), and 1.65 (1.17-2.33), respectively. Regarding the specific stressful life events, loss of income/living on debt, major conflict within family, death/major illness of other close family member, and major injury/traffic accident were significantly associated with increased odds of cancer, with the ORs of 2.64 (1.81-3.86), 1.73 (1.20-2.50), 2.36 (2.05-2.72), and 2.11 (1.43-3.13). CONCLUSION Our findings suggested that experiences of cumulative and specific stressful life events were significantly associated with increased cancer prevalence in Chinese population.

Abstract
Background Several studies have suggested links between psychological stress, depression or anxiety, and cancer incidence or outcomes. Existing systematic reviews have addressed this question, with differing results. Aims This rapid systematic umbrella review summarises existing reviews assessing the association between psychological stress, depression or anxiety and cancer incidence or cancer outcomes. Methods Systematic reviews assessing stress, depression or anxiety and cancer were identified via searches of MEDLINE, PsycInfo and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews from 2010 to November 2020. Results Twelve systematic reviews were included, summarising cohort and case-control studies, most of which adjusted for confounders. Regarding cancer incidence, one large meta-analysis reported a significant association between depression/anxiety and cancer incidence, while another showed a non-significant trend. Two further meta-analyses reported significant associations between stressful life events and cancer incidence. Conversely, two meta-analyses of work stress showed no significant association with cancer incidence. Regarding outcomes among cancer patients, three meta-analyses reported significant associations between depression/anxiety and cancer mortality, while another reported a non-significant trend for depression and cancer recurrence. One meta-analysis reported a significant association between partner bereavement and cancer mortality, while another showed no significant association between work stress and cancer mortality. Conclusions There is consistent evidence for an association between psychological stress, depression or anxiety and cancer incidence in general populations, and some evidence for an association with mortality in cancer populations. Future research may focus on confirmation of these findings, as well as the role of social support and stress-reducing interventions in buffering against these effects.

Abstract
Chronic stress affects immune function and hormonal signaling and has been hypothesized to be associated with breast cancer, although results from the few prior studies are mixed and have not examined potential differences by estrogen receptor (ER) status. Using the Women's Health Initiative study, we included 76,951 postmenopausal women followed for events for a median of 16.7 years to investigate the association between baseline self-reported stressful life events and incident breast cancer by ER status and whether the association was modified by social support. We generated Cox proportional hazards models adjusting for demographic, clinical, lifestyle/behavioral, and social factors to estimate HRs and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). The mean age was 63 (SD, 7.3), and majority of participants were White race (83.5%) and married or in a marriage-like relationship (63.0%). In analyses stratified by ER status, there was no relationship between stressful life events and ER-positive breast cancer. In contrast, compared with women in the lowest quartile, those in higher quartiles had an increased risk of ER-negative breast cancer, where those in quartile 4 had the highest risk (Quartile 4 vs. Quartile 1; HR = 1.30; 95%CI, 1.01-1.68; Ptrend = 0.050). Moreover, associations were stronger for the highest versus lowest quartile of stressful life events among widowed women (HR = 2.39; 95%CI, 1.29-4.44; Pinteraction<0.001). Association between stressful life events and ER-negative breast cancer was not modified by social support. In this cohort of postmenopausal women, higher experiences of prediagnostic stressful life events were associated with increased risk of ER-negative breast cancer. PREVENTION RELEVANCE Epidemiologic studies on the association between psychosocial stress and breast cancer risk remain inconsistent, while investigation of whether the association differs by ER status is limited. In this prospective cohort of postmenopausal women, high experiences of stressful life events were positively associated with ER-negative disease but not ER-positive.

Abstract
BACKGROUND One-third or more of breast cancer survivors report stress and other psychological and physical complaints that can negatively impact quality of life. Psychosocial stress-management interventions, shown to mitigate the negative impact of these complaints, can now be delivered as accessible and convenient (for the patient and provider) e-health interventions. In the present randomized controlled trial (RCT), Coping After Breast Cancer (CABC), two modified versions of the stress management e-health intervention program StressProffen were created: one with predominantly cognitive-behavioral stress-management content (Stressproffen-CBI) and one with predominantly mindfulness-based stress-management content (StressProffen-MBI). OBJECTIVE To investigate the effects in breast cancer survivors of using StressProffen-CBI and StressProffen-MBI compared to a control group (treatment as usual). METHODS Women diagnosed with breast cancer (stage I-III, unequivocally HER2+ or ER- tumors) or DCIS aged 21-69 years who completed the Cancer Registry of Norway- initiated health survey on quality of life, are invited to the CABC trial about seven months after diagnosis. Women who give consent to participate are randomized (1:1:1) to: Stressproffen-CBI, Stressproffen-MBI, or control group. Both Stressproffen interventions consist of 10 modules of stress management content delivered through text, sound, video, and images. The primary outcome is between-groups changes in perceived stress at six months, assessed with Cohen's Perceived Stress Scale. Secondary outcomes comprise changes in quality of life, anxiety, depression, fatigue, sleep, neuropathy, coping, mindfulness and work-related outcomes approximately 1, 2 and 3 years after diagnosis. Long-term effects of the interventions on work participation, comorbidities, relapse or new cancers and mortality will be obtained from national health registries. RESULTS We plan to recruit 430 participants in total (100 in each group). Recruitment is scheduled from January 2021 through May 2023. CONCLUSIONS The CABC trial is possibly the largest ongoing psychosocial e-health RCT in breast cancer patients at current. If one or both interventions prove to be effective in reducing stress and improving psychosocial and physical complains, the StressProffen e-health interventions could be beneficial, inexpensive, and easily implementable tools for breast cancer survivors when coping with late effects after cancer and cancer treatments. Abstract
Lifestyle-associated factors play an important role in prevention of such malignancies as breast cancer (BC), prostate cancer, or colon cancer. Physical activity (PA) before, during, and after diagnosis improves outcomes for BC. People after BC live with numerous side effects and PA has potential to reduce some of them. Unfortunately, few cancer survivors exercise regularly. The aim of this study was to ascertain motivations for running among BC survivors (in comparison with the motivations of healthy women) in order to better manage their attitudes in terms of PA and active lifestyle. A total of 317 Polish women took part in the study: 152 BC women (age 46.49 ± 7.83; BMI 24.78 ± 3.50) and 165 healthy runners (control group (age 36.91 ± 9.68; BMI 23.41 ± 3.94)) using the diagnostic survey method with the Motivation for Marathoners Scale (MOMS) questionnaire. Study results show that healthy runners had higher scores for health orientation, personal goal achievement, and affiliation compared to the group of BC survivors. The scores for weight concern, recognition, psychological coping, life meaning, and self-esteem were lower than those of BC survivors. These results should be included in the management of PA attitudes among BC survivors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE WORK Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) may give rise to harmful effects on health throughout life. Epigenetic changes explain how preexisting risk factors may contribute to produce altered biological responses and cancer risk. The main aim of the review is to summarize studies examining the means in which Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) can modulate individual vulnerability to breast cancer (BC) development through multifaceted mechanisms. METHODS Studies selection, data extraction, and assessments agreed to PRISMA criteria. We included original research with clinical samples following BC interventions, investigating potential mechanisms linking ACEs and BC in adults. RESULTS From the 3321 papers found, nine articles involving 2931 participants were selected. All studies included ACEs retrospective assessments and psychological measures, and seven of them considered biomarkers. Individuals exposed to greater ACEs were at increased BC risk compared with individuals with no ACEs. Associations were found between child abuse and/or neglect, depression, perceived stress, fatigue, and plasma levels of cytokines interleukin (IL-6), C-reactive protein (CRP), soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor type II (sTNF-RII), interleukin IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra), and psycho-physiological adjustments that may lead to BC. CONCLUSIONS Exposure to multiple ACEs appears a risk factor for BC development in adulthood. Although the clinical relevance of findings such as this is ambiguous, the review added evidence for a link between the presence of childhood adversity and BC occurrence, pointing to psychological, hormonal, and immunological dysregulations.

Abstract
Introduction: In 2020, according to the Global Cancer Observatory, nearly 10 million people died of cancer. Amongst all cancers, breast cancer had the highest number of new cases and lung cancer had the highest number of deaths. Even though the literatures suggest a possible connection between psychological factors and cancer risk, their association throughout studies remains inconclusive. The present systematic review studied the connection between psychological factors and the risk of breast and lung cancer, prior to a cancer diagnosis. The psychological factors of trauma, grief, and depression were studied. Methods: The current systematic review was carried out across multiple databases in two phases, an initial exploratory research in June 2020, refined with a second electronic research in December 2020. The inclusion criteria included studies describing the association between trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), grief, and depression with breast and lung cancer risk. The psychological data collection must have been carried out prior to a confirmed breast or lung cancer diagnosis, and accessed through self-report measures, questionnaires, clinical interviews, or clinical diagnoses. Study reports had to contain information about the incidence of cancer and effect size. The exclusion criteria were studies in which psychological factors were collected after cancer diagnosis. Results and Conclusion: A total of 26 studies were included. Although non-consensual, the findings from the present systematic review suggest that, in addition to the known risk factors, psychological factors may play an important role in the etiology of both breast and lung cancer. To include psychological factors as a variable that affects cancer development may be fundamental to opening new avenues for prevention and intervention. Abstract
The classification and treatment of breast cancer is largely defined by the expression of steroid hormone receptors (HRs), namely estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR), and gene amplification/overexpression of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2). More recently, studies of androgen receptor (AR), glucocorticoid receptor (GR), and mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) have revealed that targeting these related HRs may be a promising strategy for a more personalized approach to the treatment of specific subtypes of HR+ breast cancer. For example, GR expression is associated with a good prognosis in ER+ breast cancer, but predicts poor prognosis in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). GR, like ER, PRs, and AR, is a ligand-activated transcription factor, but also has significant ligand-independent signaling activities. GR transcriptional activity is classically regulated by circulating glucocorticoids (GCs; ligand-dependent). Recent studies demonstrate that GR transcriptional activity is also regulated by a variety of cellular stress stimuli that input to GR Ser134 phosphorylation via rapid activation of the p38 mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway (ligand-independent). Furthermore, ligand-independent GR activation promotes feedforward signaling loops that mediate sustained activation of stress signaling pathways to drive advanced cancer biology (i.e. migration, invasion, chemoresistance, survival, and cellular growth). In this review, we will focus on the role of GR as a key sensor and mediator of physiologic and tumor microenvironment (TME)-derived cellular stress signaling in TNBC and discuss how targeting GR and/or associated signaling pathways may provide a strategy to inhibit deadly TNBC progression.

Abstract
Numerous studies have found that chronic stress could promote tumor progression and this may be related to inhibtion of immune system. Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) are a heterogeneous population of cells with immunosuppressive activity. MDSCs may represent a key link between chronic stress and tumor progression. However, the role of stress-induced MDSCs in breast cancer progression is unclear. The present study showed that pre-exposure of chronic stress could lead to MDSCs elevation and facilitated breast cancer metastasis in tumor-bearing mice. Adoptive transfer of MDSCs could significantly increase lung metastatic foci. In contrast, lung metastasis could be alleviated by depleting endogenous MDSCs with Gr-1 antibody. The concentration of norepinephrine in serum and the expression of tyrosine hydroxylase in bone marrow could be significantly elevated by chronic stress. Moreover, propranolol, an inhibitor of β-adrenergic signaling, could inhibit breast carcinoma metastasis and prevent the expansion of chronic stress-induced MDSCs. Further study revealed that the expressions of IL-6 and JAK/STAT3 signaling pathways were upregulated by chronic stress in mice, and this upregulation could be inhibited by propranolol. Blocking the IL-6 signal or inhibiting the activation of the JAK/STAT3 signaling pathway could reduce tumor growth and metastasis by attenuating the accumulation of MDSCs in vivo. Besides, propranolol inhibited the expression of IL-6 in supernatant of 4T1 cells induced by isoproterenol and reduced the proportion of inducible MDSCs in vitro. Taken together, these data indicated that chronic stress may accumulate MDSCs via activation of β-adrenergic signaling and IL-6/STAT3 pathway, thereby promoting breast carcinoma metastasis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cortisol's immunosuppressive, obesogenic, and hyperglycaemic effects suggest that it may play a role in cancer development. However, whether cortisol increases cancer risk is not known. We investigated the potential causal association between plasma cortisol and risk of overall and common site-specific cancers using Mendelian randomisation. METHODS Three genetic variants associated with morning plasma cortisol levels at the genome-wide significance level (P < 5 × 10-8) in the Cortisol Network consortium were used as genetic instruments. Summary-level genome-wide association study data for the cancer outcomes were obtained from large-scale cancer consortia, the UK Biobank, and the FinnGen consortium. Two-sample Mendelian randomisation analyses were performed using the fixed-effects inverse-variance weighted method. Estimates across data sources were combined using meta-analysis. RESULTS A standard deviation increase in genetically predicted plasma cortisol was associated with increased risk of endometrial cancer (odds ratio 1.50, 95% confidence interval 1.13-1.99; P = 0.005). There was no significant association between genetically predicted plasma cortisol and risk of other common site-specific cancers, including breast, ovarian, prostate, colorectal, lung, or malignant skin cancer, or overall cancer. CONCLUSIONS These results indicate that elevated plasma cortisol levels may increase the risk of endometrial cancer but not other cancers. The mechanism by which this occurs remains to be investigated.

Abstract
PURPOSE While the association between diagnosis of breast cancer and post-diagnosis psychological distress has been well documented, data regarding pre-diagnosis psychological distress in the breast cancer population are limited. Here, we assessed pre-diagnosis major life stressors and breast cancer outcomes, namely stage of disease and choice of surgery, in a single-center population. METHODS Patients with newly diagnosed clinical stage 0-3 breast cancer seen at Mayo Clinic Florida between June 11, 2018, and October 7, 2019, were administered voluntary telephone surveys to assess major life stressors during the 24 months preceding their cancer diagnosis. Subsequent clinical outcomes of cancer stage at diagnosis and surgical treatment were obtained through retrospective chart review. Study subjects who had experienced major life stressors and those who had not were compared using Chi-square tests. RESULTS Of 222 patients who were included, 51.3% reported experiencing a major life event before breast cancer diagnosis. 43.9% of these patients endorsed family-related stress. 21.1% had experienced multiple stressors. 1.8% described financial stress. Although more patients in the group with pre-diagnosis stress had carcinoma in situ (21.1% versus 13.0%, p = 0.11) and fewer had stage T1/T2 disease (64% versus 73.1%, p = 0.14) than in the group without stress, these differences were not statistically significant. More patients with pre-diagnosis stress chose mastectomy (34.2% versus 22.2%, p = 0.048). CONCLUSIONS Psychological distress is prevalent prior to breast cancer diagnosis and may merit early intervention. While additional study in diverse populations is needed, current data suggest possible associations between pre-diagnosis psychological distress and surgical decision making, specifically mastectomy.

Abstract
Stress is a common belief among breast cancer patients and the public to explain variation in breast cancer incidence. Epidemiological studies interrogating the relationship between stress and cancer have reported mixed results. The impact of the topic and the lack of consensus has sparked this review of the literature to investigate gaps in knowledge and identify areas of research. We first present a brief summary of the biopsychosocial model generally used to conduct research on stress. We then divide the overview of the literature into areas of research focus. These include the role of distressing life events in breast cancer incidence, the role of adverse childhood events in later breast cancer incidence, the importance of race and socioeconomic status (SES) as social determinants of breast cancer incidence, and the specific role of chronic stress in relation to breast cancer. For each topic, we discuss the potential of stress as a risk factor and possible intervention strategies that could reduce the effects of stress. We then identify further research questions to be probed to fill the gaps in knowledge. We conclude with a discussion of future research directions for stress research as it relates to breast cancer incidence.

Abstract
Background Quality of life (QoL) indicates individual’s perception of the physical, psychological and social aspects of health. The association between QoL and all stressful life events‘ dimensions has not been investigated among industrial employees. Purpose The present study aimed to investigate the association between stressful life events and QoL in a large sample of Iranian industrial employees. Material and Methods In a cross-sectional study, 3063 manufacturing employees in Isfahan, Iran, were recruited. QoL was measured with the Euro-QoL five dimension questionnaire (EQ-5D). Stressful life events were assessed by an Iranian validated stressful life event questionnaire (SLE). Multilevel latent class regression was employed for classifying participants based on QoL and for determining its association with stressful life events. Results Two classes of employees, ie, low (comprised 20% of participants) and high QoL (80%), were identified. From 11 dimensions of stressful life events two major domains, socioeconomic and personal stressor profiles, were identified. Multilevel latent class regression results showed that the higher scores of social (OR: 1.14, 95%CI: 1.12–1.16) and personal (OR: 2.36, 95%CI: 1.87– 2.98) stressor domains were significantly associated with increased risk of being in the poor QoL class. Among personal and socioeconomic stressors, health concerns and daily life dimensions had higher significant association with poor QoL. Conclusion Results of our study indicated that life stressors have negative impacts on QoL of employees. Personal stressors showed higher negative impact than socioeconomic on QoL. Managing the stressors can play an effective role in improving the QoL of employees, their physical and mental health, and indirectly enhances the organizational performance and job productivity.

Abstract
Measuring systemic chronic inflammatory markers in the blood may be one way of understanding the role of inflammation in breast cancer risk, and might provide an intermediate outcome marker in prevention studies. Here, we present the results of a systematic review of prospective epidemiologic studies that examined associations between systemic inflammatory biomarkers measured in blood and breast cancer risk. From 1 January 2014 to 20 April 2020, we identified 18 unique studies (from 16 publications) that examined the association of systemic inflammatory biomarkers measured in blood with breast cancer risk using prospectively collected epidemiologic data. Only one marker, C-reactive protein, was studied extensively (measured in 13 of the 16 publications), and had some evidence of a positive association with breast cancer risk. Evidence associating other inflammatory biomarkers and more comprehensive panels of markers with the development of breast cancer is limited. Future prospective evidence from expanded panels of systemic blood inflammatory biomarkers is needed to establish strong and independent links with breast cancer risk, along with mechanistic studies to understand inflammatory pathways and demonstrate how breast tissue responds to chronic inflammation. This knowledge could ultimately support the development and evaluation of mechanistically driven interventions to reduce inflammation and prevent breast cancer.
