Abstract
In the last three decades, an increase in thyroid cancer incidence has been observed worldwide, as well as in Lithuania. Although the rise was linked to overdiagnosis, the role of lifestyle and environmental factors, including exposure to ionizing radiation, cannot be excluded. In our retrospective study, we aimed to assess the association between the average age-specific thyroid dose due to the radioactive iodine uptake during childhood and adolescence from the Chernobyl fallout in Lithuania, and the trends of incidence of thyroid cancer from 1991 to 2015 in different regions. Averaged age-dependent thyroid doses were estimated for every municipality based on radioiodine activity in milk, reconstructed from available 131I activity measurements in the grass. Thyroid cancer incidence rates were calculated for the entire population and for two age at the time of exposure groups: 0-19 years and 0-9 years. Thyroid cancer relative risk (RR) was estimated for three municipality-specific thyroid dose (for 0-year-old babies) categories: less than 100 mGy (reference group), 100-199 mGy, and ≥200 mGy. Over the study period (1991-2015), a total of 5664 cases of thyroid cancer were registered in the entire Lithuanian population; 817 cases in the age group from 0 to 19 years at the time of the Chernobyl accident, and 266 cases in the age group from 0 to 9 years. Age-standardized thyroid cancer incidence rates have notably increased since 2000, peaked in 2009 (especially in females), and then slightly decreased and stabilized. The estimated average municipality-specific age-dependent thyroid doses ranged from 270 mGy in western Lithuania to 1.5 mGy in central and northern Lithuania. For the age group of 0-19 years at the time of the accident, in the period 1991-1995, the thyroid cancer relative risk was significantly increased (RR 3.91; 95 % CI: 1.27-10.29, p=0.01) in the highest dose category, compared to the lowest (although based on a small number of cases). For the age group 0-9 years at the time of the accident, a tendency of increased RR in the highest dose category appeared in the most recent period, 2011-2015. Our observations need to be confirmed by further following trends of thyroid cancer incidence in the cohort of 0-19-year-old Lithuanians at the time of the Chernobyl accident.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Thyroid cancer (TC) is the most common malignancy of the endocrine system. This study aimed to assess the global distribution of TC incidence and mortality in 2022, as well as to predict the burden for the year 2050. METHODS Data from the GLOBOCAN 2022 database were used to analyze the age-standardized incidence and mortality rates of TC by sex, age group (<55 years and ≥55 years), country, world region, and level of Human Development Index (HDI) for 185 countries. The predicted incidence and mortality burden for 2050 was calculated based on demographic projections. RESULTS In 2022, an estimated 821,214 new TC cases and 47,507 TC-related deaths occurred worldwide. The age-standardized incidence rates (ASIRs) and age-standardized mortality rates (ASMRs) were higher in women (ASIR: 13.60 per 100,000; ASMR: 0.53 per 100,000) than in men (ASIR: 4.60 per 100,000; ASMR: 0.35 per 100,000). The ASIR in high HDI countries was approximately ten times higher than that in low HDI countries for both sexes, with relatively similar ASMR across regions. Among 185 countries, China had the largest number of TC cases (accounting for 56.77% of total cases) and TC-related deaths (accounting for 24.35% of global TC-related deaths), with the highest ASIR in men (13.30 per 100,000). Worldwide, approximately 64.63% of TC cases occurred in populations under 55 years old, while nearly 82.99% of TC-related deaths occurred in populations aged 55 years and above. If the rates stay the same as in 2022, it is projected that approximately 1,100,000 new TC cases and 91,000 TC-related deaths will occur in 2050, indicating a 34.15% and 89.58% increase, respectively. CONCLUSIONS TC is a highly frequent cancer worldwide with disparities across regions, genders, and age groups. Our results provide light on the worldwide TC disease burden and facilitate regionally customized prevention measures.

Abstract
Background Childhood and adolescent cancer represent a significant health burden in the United States. Current and precise epidemiological data are crucial to develop effective cancer control plans and ultimately reduce the burden of childhood and adolescent cancer. Methods We analyzed data obtained from cancer registries in the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program. Age-standardized incidence and death rates, assessed using joinpoint analysis, were quantified as annual percentage changes (APC) and average percentage changes (AAPC). Results The overall cancer incidence rate in 2008-2018 was 187.9 per 1,000,000 persons. Cancer incidence rates demonstrated a sustained upward trend, with an APC of 0.8 from 1975 to 2018. Incidence rates during 2008-2018 remained stable among non-Hispanic Black children but increased among other racial and ethnic groups. Leukemias, central nervous system tumors, and lymphomas were the most common cancer groups for patients aged 0-19 years. Cancer death rates decreased among children [AAPC, -1.3 (95% CI, -1.5 to -1.1)] during 2009-2019, while were stable among adolescents during that period. Conclusions In this study, we analyzed cancer incidence and mortality rates and trends in children aged 0-19 years in the United States. Our findings revealed an overall increase in cancer incidence rates among children and adolescents, accompanied by a decline in cancer mortality rates over time. These rates and trends varied by age, sex, and particularly race and ethnicity, highlighting the significance of comprehending and addressing disparities and ultimately reducing the disease burden of childhood and adolescent cancer.

Abstract
Thyroid cancer (TC) is substantially more common in women than in men, pointing to a possible role of sex steroid hormones. We investigated the association between circulating sex steroid hormones, sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and the risk of differentiated TC in men and women within the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and nutrition (EPIC) cohort. During follow-up, we identified 333 first primary incident cases of differentiated TC (152 in pre/peri-menopausal women, 111 in post-menopausal women, and 70 in men) and 706 cancer-free controls. Women taking exogenous hormones at blood donation were excluded. Plasma concentrations of testosterone, androstenedione, dehydroepiandrosterone, estradiol, estrone and progesterone (in pre-menopausal women only) were performed using liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry method. SHBG concentrations were measured by immunoassay. Odds ratios (ORs) were estimated using conditional logistic regression models adjusted for possible confounders. No significant associations were observed in men and postmenopausal women, while a borderline significant increase in differentiated TC risk was observed with increasing testosterone (adjusted OR T3 vs T1: 1.68, 95% CI: 0.96-2.92, ptrend = .06) and androstenedione concentrations in pre/perimenopausal women (adjusted OR T3 vs T1: 1.78, 95% CI: 0.96-3.30, ptrend = .06, respectively). A borderline decrease in risk was observed for the highest progesterone/estradiol ratio (adjusted OR T3 vs T1: 0.54, 95% CI: 0.28-1.05, ptrend = .07). Overall, our results do not support a major role of circulating sex steroids in the etiology of differentiated TC in post-menopausal women and men but may suggest an involvement of altered sex steroid production in pre-menopausal women.

Abstract
Background We aimed to explore the burden of thyroid cancer worldwide from 1990 to 2019 and to project its future trends from 2020 to 2030. Methods Based on annual data on thyroid cancer cases from 1990 to 2019 available in the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) database, we calculated the age-standardised incidence, death, and disability-adjusted life year (DALY) rates for thyroid cancer. We used the estimated annual percentage change (EPAC) to quantify the temporal trends in these age-standardised rates from 1990 to 2019 and applied generalised additive models to project the disease burden from 2020 to 2030. Results The global age-standardised incidence rate (ASIR) of thyroid cancer increased from 1990 to 2019, with a higher overall disease burden in women than in men at both study time points. The male-to-female ratios for the ASIR increased from 0.41 in 1990 to 0.51 in 2019, while the ratio for the age-standardised death rate (ASDR) increased from 0.60 to 0.82. The models predicted the United Arab Emirates would have the fastest rising trend in both the ASIR (estimated annual percentage changes (EAPC) = 4.19) and age-standardised DALY rate (EAPC = 4.36) in 2020-30, while Saint Kitts and Nevis will have the fastest rising trend in the ASDR (EAPC = 2.29). Meanwhile, the growth trends for the ASDR and age-standardised DALY rate are projected to increase across countries in this period. A correlation analysis of the global burden of thyroid cancer between 1990-2019 and 2020-30 showed a significant positive correlation between the increase in the ASIR and socio-demographic index (SDI) in low-SDI and low-middle-SDI countries. Conclusions The global burden of thyroid cancer is increasing, especially in the female population and in low-middle-SDI regions, underscoring a need to target them for effective prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

Abstract
The influence of iodine-rich foods on thyroid cancer (TC) risk remains inadequately understood. Therefore, we aimed to comprehensively investigate the relationship between three iodine-rich food groups and TC prevalence using extensive data from a large Korean population. We assessed the dietary intake of 169,057 participants in the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (2004-2013) using a food frequency questionnaire. The top-three iodine-rich food groups (including egg, seaweed, and dairy) were selected based on Korean dietary reference intakes and categorized by weekly consumption frequency. We conducted multiple logistic regression models to examine the relationship between food consumption and TC prevalence. After adjusting for confounding factors, higher seaweed consumption (>5 times/week) was significantly associated with lower TC prevalence (odds ratio [OR], 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.42, 0.32-0.56, p-value < 0.001). In contrast, compared with moderate dairy consumption (3-4 times/week), lower dairy product intake (<1 time/week) was associated with higher TC prevalence (OR, 95% CI = 1.32, 1.05-1.67, p-value = 0.017). Our findings suggest that sufficient seaweed consumption may offer protection against TC, and incorporating dairy products into the diet may lower TC incidence in the Korean population. The most significant limitations of our study are the absence of 24 h urine samples for iodine status assessment and the lack of clinical data on the diagnosis of thyroid cancer.

Abstract
Background: Previous observational epidemiological studies such as case-control studies and cohort studies have reported inconsistent results regarding the associations between seafood intake and the risk of thyroid cancer. Materials and methods: We searched PubMed and EMBASE in August 2021 using keywords related to seafood intake and thyroid cancer. A pooled odds ratio (OR) or relative risk (RR) with its 95% confidence interval (CI) was calculated. Results: We included 17 observational studies with 13 case-control studies and 4 cohort studies, which included 4,309 thyroid cancer patients among 599,161 participants. In the random effects model meta-analysis of all 17 studies, we found that there was no significant association between seafood intake (highest vs. lowest intake) and the risk of thyroid cancer (OR or RR, 1.01; 95% CI: 0.86 to 1.19; I2=51.4%). Although the associations were not statistically significant, subgroup meta-analyses by study design showed opposite findings: seafood intake decreased the risk of thyroid cancer in case-control studies (OR or RR, 0.94; 95% CI: 0.74 to 1.19; I2=60.6%; n=13) but increased in cohort studies (OR or RR, 1.14; 95% CI: 0.97 to 1.35; I2=0.0%; n=4). Conclusion: The current meta-analysis of observational epidemiological studies found that that overall, there was no significant association between seafood intake and the risk of thyroid cancer. However, given that cohort studies give us a higher level of evidence than case-control studies, further prospective cohort studies are warranted to confirm the association between them.

Abstract
While Human Papillomavirus (HPV) particles have been detected in a small proportion of benign thyroid nodules or thyroid cancer cases, a role of HPV in these thyroid conditions has not been established. This study aims to investigate the association of HPV infection with thyroid cancer (TC) using a nationwide population-based study. We retrieved data for this case-control study from Taiwan's Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2010. The study sample included 3062 patients with TC and 9186 propensity-scored matched controls. We employed multivariate logistic regression models to quantitatively evaluate the association of TC with HPV infections after taking age, sex, monthly income, geographic location and urbanization level of the patient's residence, diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia into considerations. Chi-squared test revealed that there was a significant difference in the prevalence of prior HPV infections between patients with TC and controls (15.3% vs. 7.6%, p < 0.001). The adjusted odds ratio of prior HPV infections for patients with TC was 2.199 (95% CI = 1.939-2.492) relative to controls. The adjusted ORs of prior HPV infections for patients with TC was similar for males and females. Our research suggests a significant link between HPV infection and the development of TC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer diagnosis is increasing around the world and in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The proportion of thyroid cancer has increased over the past three decades. There are very few studies on cancer epidemiology, and in particular on thyroid cancer in the DRC.
AIM To establish the most recent proportion of thyroid cancer in the DRC compared to other cancers.
METHODS This is a retrospective and descriptive study of 6106 consecutive cancer cases listed in the pathological registers of 4 Laboratories in the city of Kinshasa. This study included all cancer cases recorded in the registers between 2005 and 2019.
RESULTS From a sample of 6106 patients, including all cancer types, 68.3% cases were female and 31.7% were male. Breast and cervical cancer were the most common types of cancer in women and, prostate and skin cancer were the most common types in men. Thyroid cancer was sixth in proportion in women and eleventh in men compared to all cancers. Papillary carcinoma was the most common of thyroid cancers. Rare cancers such as anaplastic and medullary thyroid carcinomas had a proportion of 7% and 2%, respectively.
CONCLUSION Newer diagnostic tools led to a surge in cancer diagnoses in the DRC. Thyroid cancer has more than doubled its proportion over the last several decades in the country.

Abstract
Cancer is one of the important health problems in Iran, which is considered as the third cause of death. Endocrine cancers are rare but mostly curable. Thyroid cancer, the most common endocrine tumors, includes about one percent of malignant cancer. In this study, we examined the 15-year national trend of endocrine cancer incidence in Iranian men and women. The data in each province were evaluated based on age, gender, and cancer type according to International Classification of Disease Codes version 10 (ICD-10) from 2005 to 2020 in Iran. All data were obtained from the reports of the Statistics Center of Iran (SCI), 6 phases of the step-by-step approach to monitoring the risk factors of chronic diseases over 18 years old (STEPs), and 3 periods of the CASPIAN study (survey of non-communicable diseases in childhood and adolescence). Statistical analyzes and graph generation were done using R statistical software. Poisson regression with mixed effects was used for data modeling and incidence rate estimation. The incidence of thyroid gland malignancy is higher in women than in men. On the other hand, the incidence of adrenal gland cancer is slightly higher in men than in women. The same pattern is observed for other endocrine neoplasms and related structures. The incidence rate of these types of cancers has generally increased from 2005 to 2020 in Iran. This increase is more in women than in men. In addition, in the middle of the country, there is a strong region in terms of the occurrence of these types of cancers. The incidence rate in these provinces is relatively higher for both sexes and all studied periods. We conducted a study to observe the changing trends for various types of endocrine cancers over 15 years in men and women. Considering the increasing trend of thyroid cancers in Iran, therefore, creating essential policies for the management of these types of cancers for prevention, rapid diagnosis, and, timely treatment is particularly important.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dietary pattern analysis has gained particular interest, because it reflects the complexity of dietary intake. The aim of this study was to explore the associations between a posteriori dietary patterns, derived using a data-driven approach, and the risk of differentiated thyroid cancer (TC) in Europe. METHODS This investigation included 450,064 adults from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort. Dietary intake was assessed using validated country-specific dietary questionnaires. A posteriori dietary patterns were computed using principal component analyses. Cox regression was used to calculate multivariable adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS After a mean follow-up time of 14 years, 712 first differentiated TCs were diagnosed. In the fully adjusted model, a dietary pattern characterized by alcohol consumption (basically beer and wine) was negatively associated with differentiated TC risk (HRQ4vs.Q1 = 0.75; 95% CI:0.60-0.94, P-trend = 0.005), while a dietary pattern rich in sweetened beverages was positively associated with differentiated TC risk (HRQ4vs.Q1 = 1.26; 95% CI:0.99-1.61; P-trend = 0.07). The remaining 8 dietary patterns were not related to differentiated TC risk. The intake of sweetened beverages was positively associated with differentiated TC risk (HR100mL/d = 1.05; 95% CI:1.00-1.11), especially with papillary TC risk (HR100mL/d = 1.07; 95% CI:1.01-1.13). Similar results were observed with sugary and artificially sweetened beverages. CONCLUSIONS The investigation of dietary patterns detected that the consumption of sweetened beverages was associated with a higher risk of differentiated thyroid cancer. Our results are in line with the general dietary recommendations of reducing the consumption of sweetened beverages.

Abstract
More people are diagnosed with thyroid cancer than any other endocrine tumor. Differentiated thyroid cancer is often treated by removing the thyroid gland (thyroidectomy), iodizing radiation, or inhibiting thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH). Advanced thyroid carcinomas are notoriously resistant to chemotherapy, thus the pursuit of alternative treatments is vital. The best methods for treating individuals with advanced nonmedullary and medullary thyroid carcinomas are discussed in this post. Numerous tyrosine kinase inhibitors and antiangiogenic inhibitors, two types of novel target therapy, have shown promise in studies for individuals with thyroid cancer. Both the positive and unfavourable outcomes of clinical studies of these drugs were addressed. The findings presented here are encouraging, but more study is required to establish whether or not this method is effective in the treatment of thyroid cancer.

Abstract
Background In addition to the thyroid cancer (TC) risk from lifestyle and environmental factors such as radiation exposure, some studies have indicated that diet may affect TC development; however, previous findings are inconsistent. The objective of our study was to investigate the association between dietary habits and TC risk in a Korean population. Materials and methods A total of 13,973 participants were selected after excluding ineligible subjects from the Cancer Screenee Cohort at National Cancer Center in Korea from October 2007 to December 2021. Participants were followed until May 2022 to identify incident TC cases. Information on dietary habits and general characteristics was collected using a self-report questionnaire administered at enrollment without keeping track of changes in eating habits during the follow-up period. A Cox proportional hazards model was used to determine the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of TC risk for each dietary factor. Results A total of 138 incident TC cases were identified during the median follow-up period of 7.6 years. Of the 12 dietary habits evaluated, only two habits showed significant associations with TC. A significantly decreased TC risk was found among participants who consumed milk and/or dairy products 5 or more days a week [adjusted HR (aHR), 0.58; 95% CI, 0.39-0.85]. Notably, a stronger protective effect of dairy consumption was observed in participants aged ≥ 50 years (aHR, 0.44; 95% CI, 0.26-0.75), in women (aHR, 0.53; 95% CI, 0.35-0.81), and in non-smokers (aHR, 0.60; 95% CI, 0.39-0.92). There was a reduced risk of TC in participants with meal durations longer than 10 min (aHR, 0.58; 95% CI, 0.41-0.83). However, this association was limited to individuals aged ≥ 50 years (aHR, 0.49; 95% CI, 0.31-0.79), women (aHR, 0.61; 95% CI, 0.41-0.90), and non-smokers (aHR, 0.62; 95% CI, 0.41-0.92). Conclusion Our findings suggest that consuming milk and/or dairy products 5 or more days a week and having a meal duration longer than 10 min could be protective factors against TC, especially in individuals aged ≥ 50 years, women and non-smokers. Further prospective studies are needed to investigate the association of dietary intake with specific types of TC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Although polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were banned decades ago, populations are continuously exposed to PCBs due to their persistence and bioaccumulation/biomagnification in the environment. Results from limited epidemiologic studies linking PCBs to thyroid cancer have been inconclusive. This study aimed to investigate the association between individual PCBs and PCB mixture and papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), the most common thyroid cancer histologic subtype. METHODS We carried out a nested case-control study including 742 histologically confirmed PTC cases diagnosed in 2000-2013 and 742 individually matched controls among U.S. military service members. Pre-diagnostic serum samples that were collected on average nine years before PTC diagnosis were used to measure PCB congeners by gas chromatography isotope dilution high resolution mass spectrometry (GC/ID-HRMS). Conditional logistic regression, Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR), and weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression were employed to estimate the association between single PCB congeners as well as their mixture and PTC. RESULTS Four PCB congeners (PCB-74, PCB-99, PCB-105, PCB-118) had significant associations and dose-response relationships with increased risk of PTC in single congener models. When considering the effects from all measured PCBs and their potential interactions in the BKMR model, PCB-118 showed positive trends of association with PTC. Increased exposure to the PCB congeners as a mixturewas also associated with an increased risk of PTC in the WQS model, with the mixture dominated by PCB-118, followed by PCB-74 and PCB-99. One PCB congener, PCB-187, showed an inverse trend of association with PTC in the mixture analysis. DISCUSSION This study suggests that exposure to certain PCBs as well as a mixture of PCBs were associated with an increased risk of PTC. The observed association was mainly driven by PCB-118, and to a lesser extent by PCB-74 and PCB-99. The findings warrant further investigation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the incidence trend of the five main causes of cancer, according to sex and age, in Greater Cuiabá, in the state of Mato Grosso, from 2000 to 2016. METHODS Incidence information was obtained from the Population-Based Cancer Registry, referring to the municipalities Cuiabá and Várzea Grande (RCBP - Cuiabá). Crude incidence rates were calculated and the five main types of cancer were selected: for males, prostate (C61), lung (C33-34), colorectal (C18-21), stomach (C16) and oral cavity cancer (C00-10); and for females, breast (C50), cervix (C53), colorectal (C18-21), lung (C33-34) and thyroid gland cancer (C73). Age-adjusted rates were calculated by the direct method, using the world population as reference. Trends were estimated using the Joinpoint method and evaluated by Annual Percent Change (APC) and Average Annual Percent Change (AAPC). The Joinpoint Regression Program software, version 8.3.6.1, was used. RESULTS During the period, there was a decreasing trend of lung (AAPC=-2.2; 95%CI -4.0--0.3) and stomach cancer (AAPC=-5.2; 95%CI -7.7--2.6) in men, and of cervix cancer (AAPC=-7.2; 95%CI -9.0--5.3) in women, and increasing for breast (AAPC=2.8; 95%CI 0.2-5.5) and thyroid cancer (AAPC=8.3; 95%CI 4.6-12.2). CONCLUSION In Greater Cuiabá, we found a downward incidence trend among elderly men for prostate, lung and stomach cancer. Women are affected at younger age groups, with an upward trend for breast cancer and downward trend for cervix cancer.

Abstract
Iodine deficiency is the most important established nutritional risk factor for the development of thyroid nodular disease. Nevertheless, to the best of our knowledge, to date no study focused on the association between the adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) and thyroid nodular disease. Adherence to the MD was evaluated using the PREvención con DIetaMEDiterránea (PREDIMED) questionnaire. Physical activity, smoking habits, and anthropometric parameters were studied. PREDIMED was used to evaluate the degree of adherence to the MD. Evaluation of fine needle aspiration cytology of thyroid lesions based on 2013 Italian thyroid cytology classification system. Cytology of thyroid nodules was carried out through sonography-guided fine-needle aspiration and patients were divided into 5 categories: TIR2, TIR3a, TIR3b, TIR4, and TIR5. The study population consisted of 794 subjects (554 females, 69.8%), aged 18–65 years, with BMIs ranging from 19.4 to 55.3 kg/m2. Thyroid nodular disease was present in 391 participants (49.2%), and the most frequent cytological categories was TIR2 (18.3 %), followed by a TIR4 (8.9 %). The presence of thyroid nodules was also significantly associated with the lowest adherence to the MD (OR 6.16, p < 0.001). Patients with TIR5 had the lower adherence to the MD (2.15 ± 1.12 score) compared to other TIRs (p < 0.001). The cytological category with high-risk of malignancy (TIR4/TIR5) was significantly associated with the lowest adherence to the MD (OR 137.55, p < 0.001) and PREDIMED score (OR = 0.33, p < 0.001, 95% IC = 0.26–0.41, R2 = 0.462). At multiple regression analysis, PREDIMED score was the main predictor of both the presence of nodules (p < 0.001) and the cytological category with high-risk of malignancy (p < 0.001). At ROC analysis PREDIMED score ≤ 5 and ≤ 4 (p = 0.001) were the values that predicted the presence of thyroid nodular disease and cytological category with high-risk of malignancy, respectively. In conclusion, our study demonstrated that the low adherence to the MD is associated with the presence of thyroid nodular disease and in particular with those at high-risk of malignancy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hyperthyreoidism due to Graves' disease is a rare disorder in pediatric practice. There is 2 treatment options in Graves' disease: medical treatment and definitive treatment, including surgery and radioactive iodine. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages. If medical therapy is ineffective the choice between radical treatment method is raised: radioactive iodine or total thyroidectomy. In this research we analyze treatment outcomes in pediatric Graves' disease patients after different radical treatment methods. AIM Comparative analysis of radical treatment outcomes in pediatric patients with Graves' disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS Retrospective and prospective one-center research of 122 patients with Graves' disease after radical treatment (between 2016 and 2021)RESULTS: The mean age was 13.5±3,5 year at the moment of examination. Patients were divided into 2 groups due to the radical treatments method: 1 group (n=60) were children after surgical treatment, 2 group (n=62) - after radioactive iodine. The mean dose of medical treatment in these groups did not reliably differ (p=0,06), duration of the medical treatment was reliably longer in patients after radioactive iodine (p=0,024). Graves' orbitopathy was diagnosed in 58 patients (47,5%) and met equally often in both groups, but active stage of Graves' orbitopathy was diagnosed only in patients from the 1st group. Thyroid size was reliable bigger in patients from the 1st group (p=0,004), and thyroid gland nodes were diagnosed only in patients from 1st group (p=0,0007). CONCLUSION RI can be considered an effective and safe treatment for GD. The effectiveness of RI depends on the volume of the thyroid gland; according to the results of the constructed ROC curve, the risk of repeated RI is higher with a volume of more than 55 cm3. Also radioactive iodine is undesirable if there is signs of ophatalmopathy due to its possible deterioration. According to the results of the study hypoparathyroidism after surgical treatment was diagnosed in 20%, recurrent laryngeal nerve injury was diagnosed after surgical treatment in 5% of patients. In patients with identified nodular goiter according to the results of ultrasound, surgical treatment is preferable due to the impossibility of excluding thyroid cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Thyroid cancer incidence rates have increased in many countries and settings; however, mortality rates have remained stable at lower rates. This epidemiological pattern has been largely attributed to an overdiagnosis effect. Timely evidence for the global epidemiological status is necessary to identify the magnitude of this problem and the areas mostly affected by it. We therefore aimed to provide an up-to-date assessment on the global distribution of thyroid cancer incidence and mortality rates in 2020. METHODS We extracted age-standardised incidence and mortality rates per 100 000 person-years of thyroid cancer as defined by the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology 10th Revision (code C73), for 185 countries or territories by sex and 18 age groups (ie, 0-4, 5-9, …, 80-84, and ≥85 years) from the GLOBOCAN database. Both incidence and mortality estimates were presented by country and aggregated across the 20 UN-defined world regions and according to the UN's four-tier Human Development Index (ie, low, medium, high, and very high) in 2020. FINDINGS Globally, in 2020, the age-standardised incidence rates of thyroid cancer were 10·1 per 100 000 women and 3·1 per 100 000 men, and age-standardised mortality rates were 0·5 per 100 000 women and 0·3 per 100 000 men. In both sexes, incidence rates were five times higher in high and very high Human Development Index countries than in low and medium Human Development Index countries, whereas mortality rates were relatively similar across different settings. Incidence rates in women differed by more than 15 times across world regions, with the highest incidence rates being in the Federated States of Micronesia and French Polynesia (18·5 per 100 000 women), North America (18·4 per 100 000), and east Asia (17·8 per 100 000, with South Korea reaching 45 per 100 000). Mortality rates were less than one per 100 000 in most countries and in both sexes. South Korea had the highest incidence-to-mortality rate ratio in both sexes, followed by Cyprus and Canada. INTERPRETATION The current thyroid cancer epidemiological landscape is strongly suggestive of a large effect of overdiagnosis in many countries and settings worldwide, confirming the relevance of thyroid cancer overdiagnosis as a global public health problem. Abstract
BACKGROUND In January 2021, the European Union ended the license of Mancozeb, the bestselling ethylenedithiocarbamate (EBDC) fungicide, because of some properties typical of human carcinogens. This decision contrasts the IARC classification of EBDC fungicides (Group 3, not classifiable as to human carcinogenicity). A systematic review of the scientific literature was conducted to explore the current evidence. METHODS Human and experimental studies of cancer and exposure to EBDC fungicides (Mancozeb, Maneb, Zineb, and others) and ethylene thiourea (ETU), their major metabolite, published in English as of December 2021, were retrieved using PubMed, the list of references of the relevant reports, and grey literature. RESULTS The epidemiological evidence of EBDC carcinogenicity is inadequate, with two studies each suggesting an association with melanoma and brain cancer and inconsistent findings for thyroid cancer. Experimental animal studies point at thyroid cancer in rats and liver cancer in mice, while multiple organs were affected following the long-term oral administration of Mancozeb. The mechanism of thyroid carcinogenesis in rats has also been shown to occur in humans. Genotoxic effects have been reported. CONCLUSIONS The results of this systematic review suggest inadequate evidence for the carcinogenicity of EBDC fungicides from human studies and sufficient evidence from animal studies, with positive results on three out of ten key characteristics of carcinogens applying to humans as well. An IARC re-evaluation of the human carcinogenicity of EBDC fungicides is warranted.

Abstract
Among natural macromolecules, the polyphenol extract from Annurca flesh (AFPE) apple could play a potential therapeutic role for a large spectrum of human cancer also by exerting antioxidant properties. Thyroid cancer is a common neoplasia in women, and it is in general responsive to treatments although patients may relapse and metastasize or therapy-related side effects could occur. In this study, we explored the effects of AFPE on papillary (TPC-1) and anaplastic (CAL62) thyroid cancer cell line proliferation and viability. We found that AFPE exposure induced a reduction of cell proliferation and cell viability in dose-dependent manner. The effect was associated with the reduction of phosphorylation of Rb protein. To study the mechanisms underlying the biological effects of AFPE treatment in thyroid cancer cells, we investigated the modulation of miRNA (miR) expression. We found that AFPE treatment increased the expression of the miR-141, miR-145, miR-200a-5p, miR-425, and miR-551b-5p. Additionally, since natural polyphenols could exert their beneficial effects through the antioxidant properties, we investigated this aspect, and we found that AFPE treatment reduced the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in CAL62 cells. Moreover, AFPE pretreatment protects against hydrogen peroxide-induced oxidative stress in thyroid cancer cell lines. Taken together, our findings suggest that AFPE, by acting at micromolar concentration in thyroid cancer cell lines, may be considered a promising adjuvant natural agent for thyroid cancer treatment approach.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN Cadaveric. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to quantify the amplitude and duration of surgeons' muscle exertion from pedicle cannulation to screw placement using both manual and power-assisted tools in a simulated surgical environment using surface electromyography (EMG). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA A survey of Scoliosis Research Society members reported rates of neck pain, rotator cuff disease, lateral epicondylitis, and cervical radiculopathy at 3 ×, 5 ×, 10 ×, and 100 × greater than the general population. The use of power-assisted tools in spine surgery to facilitate pedicle cannulation through screw placement during open posterior fixation surgery may reduce torque on the upper limb and risk of overuse injury. METHODS Pedicle preparation and screw placement was performed from T4-L5 in four cadavers by two board-certified spine surgeons using both manual and power-assisted techniques. EMG recorded muscle activity from the flexor carpi radialis, extensor carpi radialis, biceps, triceps, deltoid, upper trapezius, and neck extensors. Muscle activity was reported as a percentage of the maximum voluntary exertion of each muscle group (%MVE) and muscle exertion was linked to low- (0-20% MVE), moderate- (20%-45% MVE), high- (45%-70% MVE) and highest- (70%-100% MVE) risk of overuse injury based on literature. RESULTS Use of power-assisted tools for pedicle cannulation through screw placement maintains average muscle exertion at low risk for overuse injury for every muscle group. Conversely with manual technique, the extensor carpi radialis, biceps, upper trapezius and neck extensors operate at levels of exertion that risk overuse injury for 50% to 92% of procedure time. Powerassisted tools reduce average muscle exertion of the biceps, triceps, and deltoid by upwards of 80%. CONCLUSION Power-assisted technique protects against risk of overuse injury. Elevated muscle exertion of the extensor carpi radialis, biceps, upper trapezius, and neck extensors during manual technique directly correlate with surgeons' self-reported diagnoses of lateral epicondylitis, rotator cuff disease, and cervical myelopathy.Level of Evidence: N/A.

Abstract
Introduction
Head and neck cancers (HNCs) are increasing in Nepal and have become a major public health issue. This study aims to describe the trend of HNCs in a national tertiary cancer hospital in Nepal.
Methods
This was a cross-sectional study with secondary data analysis conducted at B.P Koirala Memorial Hospital, Chitwan, Nepal. The data were obtained from the medical record section and included all new HNC cases registered from 2012 to 2017. Analysis was done using Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 17. Subgroup analysis was done according to age, gender, site, and year.
Results
A total of 4,582 new HNCs were registered, of which 3,097 (67.6%) were males and 1,482 (32.4%) were females. Lip and oral cavity cancers (46.5%) were the most common HNCs followed by tonsil and pharynx (18.0%) and larynx (15.8%). The trend of HNCs shows a steady rise in incidence with difference according to the sites. HNCs were more common among males than females except for thyroid cancer. The most common age group was 60 to 74 years.
Conclusions
The trend of HNCs is increasing in Nepal especially oral cancers. Awareness of risk factors, effective screening programs, and comprehensive treatment should be focused to decrease the burden of HNCs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the prevalence of thyroid nodules in Chinese adult women. To analyze the relationships between lifestyle, metabolic syndrome and thyroid nodules. METHODS We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study in the tertiary hospital from 2017 to 2019. Included participants underwent thyroid color Doppler ultrasonography, lipids examination, and dietary evaluation. RESULTS Totally 2,784 participants were included, and 933 participants were found to have thyroid nodule(s) by B-ultrasound. The prevalence of thyroid nodules was 33.3%. Women in 50-59 years (OR: 1.746, 95% CI [1.356-2.249]), older than 60 (2.147 [1.540-2.993]) and occupations with mainly manual work (1.780 [1.367-2.317]) were risk factors for thyroid nodules, while moderate dietary diversity (0.624 [0.476-0.817]) and normal triglycerides level (0.739 [0.604-0.905]) were protective factors. CONCLUSION Women over 50 and those whose jobs are mainly manual should enhance screening, follow-up and health management of thyroid nodules. Higher dietary diversity is protective measures against thyroid nodules for adult women and should consider dietary balance and the food varieties, not just increased quantities.

Abstract
PURPOSE The correlation of abnormal glucose metabolism and thyroid carcinoma, especially the aggressiveness of thyroid cancer, still remains controversial. We conducted this study to investigate the relationship between abnormal glucose metabolism parameters and differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) in the Chinese population. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study was designed as a hospital-based case-control study and was approved by the Ethics Committee of our hospital and registered in the Clinical Trial Protocol Registration and Results System (Registration code: NCT03006289). From January 1, 2018 to June 30, 2021, a total of 377 DTC patients were enrolled in the study. Demographic and general characteristics, details of thyroid surgery and histopathological results, hematological test indicators were collected. Glucose metabolism parameters were calculated. Variables were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, chi-squared analysis and Fisher's exact test. Pearson bi-variate correlation and Spearman's correlation analysis were used for bi-variate analysis. RESULTS More than 40% of patients with DTC were multifocality, more than half were extra-glandular invasion, and nearly 85% complied by lymph node metastasis. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) was about 10.08% in DTC patients. It was found that the proportion of postprandial 2 h blood glucose ≥11.1mmol/L and HbA1c ≥6.5% was significantly higher than the known proportion of DM (17.8%, 16.7% vs. 10.08%). Additionally, 87.3% of the DTC patients in this study had varying degrees of insulin resistance. Further analysis found that higher T staging was associated with higher levels of area under curve of C-peptide (P = 0.029), insulin sensitivity index (P = 0.012) and C-peptide sensitivity index (P = 0.016). A delayed peak of insulin secretion was found to be positive related with capsule invasion (r = 0.206, P = 0.004). In patients without a DM history, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (P = 0.017), insulin sensitivity index (P = 0.019) and C-peptide sensitivity index (P = 0.020) were statistic associated with T staging. Also, the glucose metabolism parameter at 3-hour after a meal was related to a larger number of metastatic lymph nodes. CONCLUSION Abnormal glucose metabolism, namely, DM, hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance, were significantly associated with the carcinogensis and aggressiveness of DTC.

Abstract
RESUMO: Objetivo: Analisar a tendência da incidência das cinco principais causas de câncer, segundo sexo e faixa etária, na Grande Cuiabá, no estado de Mato Grosso, no período 2000 a 2016. Métodos: As informações da incidência foram obtidas no Registro de Câncer de Base Populacional referente aos municípios Cuiabá e Várzea Grande. Foram calculadas as taxas de incidência brutas e selecionados os cinco principais tipos de câncer: para o sexo masculino foram próstata (C61), pulmão (C33–34), colorretal (C18–21), estômago (C16) e cavidade oral (C00–10) e para o sexo feminino foram mama (C50), colo do útero (C53), colorretal (C18–21), pulmão (C33–34) e glândula tireoide (C73). As taxas foram padronizadas pelo método direto, utilizando-se população mundial como referência. As tendências foram estimadas pelo método de regressão joinpoint, segundo sexo e faixa etária, e avaliadas por meio da variação percentual anual (annual percent change — APC) e da variação percentual média anual (average annual percent change — AAPC). Utilizou-se o software Joinpoint Regression Program, versão 8.3.6.1. Resultados: No período, verificou-se tendência decrescente do câncer de pulmão (AAPC=-2,2; intervalo de confiança 95% [IC95%] −4,0–-0,3) e estômago (AAPC=-5,2; IC95% −7,7–-2,6), nos homens, e colo do útero (AAPC=-7,2; IC95% −9,0–-5,3), nas mulheres, e crescente para mama (AAPC=2,8; IC95% 0,2–5,5) e tireoide (AAPC=8,3; IC95% 4,6–12,2). Conclusão: Na Grande Cuiabá, verificou-se tendência decrescente da incidência entre homens idosos para próstata, pulmão e estômago. Mulheres são acometidas em idades mais jovens, com tendência crescente para mama e decrescente para colo do útero.

Abstract
Epidemiological studies have focused on the effects of iodine intake on the risk of thyroid cancer. However, their relationship is still obscure. The objective of the present study was to examine the association in the Chinese population. A new ecological study which combined the Data of Annual Report of Cancer, the Survey of Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) surveillance and the Water Iodine Survey was conducted to analyse the relationship between iodine intake and the thyroid cancer incidence in China. In total, 281 counties were included. Thyroid cancer incidence was negatively correlated with the consumption rate of qualified iodised salt (CRQIS) and positively correlated with goiter prevalence (GP) of children aged 8-10 years, residents' annual income and coastal status. Areas with a low CRQIS and areas with a high GP had a relatively high incidence of thyroid cancer. Regression models showed that a low CRQIS and a high GP in children aged 8-10 years (both reflecting iodine deficiency status) play a substantial role in thyroid cancer incidence in both males and females. Additionally, living in coastal areas and having a high annual income may also increase the risk of thyroid cancer. These findings suggest that mild iodine deficiency may contribute to the exceptionally high incidence of thyroid cancer in some areas in China. Maintaining appropriate iodine nutrition not only helps to eliminate IDD but also may help to reduce the occurrence of thyroid cancer.

Abstract
Background Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), with a rapidly increasing incidence, is the most prevalent malignant cancer of the thyroid. However, its pathogenesis is unclear and its specific clinical indicators have not yet been identified. There is increasing evidence that microRNAs (miRNAs) play important roles in tumor occurrence and progression. Specifically, miR-613 participates in the regulation of tumor development in various cancers; however, its effects and mechanisms of action in PTC are still unclear. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the expression and function of miR-613 in PTC. Methods qRT-PCR was used to determine miR-613 expression in 107 pairs of PTC and adjacent-normal tissues as well as in PTC cell lines and to detect TAGLN2 mRNA expression in PTC tissues and adjacent normal tissues. Western blot analysis was performed to identify TAGLN2 and epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) biomarkers. The effects of miR-613 on PTC progression were evaluated by performing MTS, wound-healing, and Transwell assays in vitro. Luciferase reporter assays were also performed to validate the target of miR-613. Results In PTC, miR-613 was significantly downregulated and its low expression level was associated with cervical lymph node metastasis. However, its overexpression significantly suppressed PTC cell proliferation, migration, and invasion and inhibited EMT. TAGLN2 was identified as a target of miR-613, which also significantly inhibited the expression of TAGLN2. Further, the restoration of TAGLN2 expression attenuated the inhibitory effects of miR-613 on PTC cell proliferation and metastasis. Conclusion Our findings demonstrated that miR-613 can suppress the progression of PTC cells by targeting TAGLN2, indicating that miR-613 plays the role of a tumor suppressor in PTC. Overall, these results suggest that the upregulation of miR-613 is a promising therapeutic strategy for PTC. Abstract
By combining data across multiple studies, researchers increase sample size, statistical power, and precision for pooled analyses of biomarker-disease associations. However, researchers must adjust for between-study variability in biomarker measurements. Previous research often treats the biomarker measurements from a reference laboratory as a gold standard, even though those measurements are certainly not equal to their true values. This paper addresses measurement error and bias arising from both the reference and study-specific laboratories. We develop two calibration methods, the exact calibration method and approximate calibration method, for pooling biomarker data drawn from nested or matched case-control studies, where the calibration subset is obtained by randomly selecting controls from each contributing study. Simulation studies are conducted to evaluate the empirical performance of the proposed methods. We apply the proposed methods to a pooling project of nested case-control studies to evaluate the association between circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and colorectal cancer risk.

Abstract
Background Thyroid cancer is a growing threat to human health. Few studies have explored trends of thyroid cancer and relationships with social development factors. In this study, we explored the trend and relationship based on GBD. Methods By using GBD study, we obtained detailed data of thyroid cancer. Incidence, mortality and DALY were used to assess epidemiological characteristics. ASR and EAPC were used to estimate the trend. Results Globally, the incidence significantly increased from 1990 to 2017, especially in high‐income regions. Males and middle SDI region demonstrated a higher increase of age‐standardized incidence rates. Unlike incidence trend, mortality trend showed a minor increase, and even showed a decreasing trend in some regions such as Eastern Sub‐Saharan Africa. Additionally, the DALY trend also demonstrated a slightly increase with an EAPC of 0.77 (95% CI 0.73–0.81). More significant increase of DALY was found in males, middle SDI region and high‐income Asia Pacific. The incidence of thyroid cancer peaked in middle‐aged people, while the mortality and DALY peaked in elder‐aged. Moreover, the proportion of thyroid cancer deaths contributable to high BMI was highest in developed countries and middle‐aged people. Conclusions Thyroid cancer is a public health problem worldwide. Over‐diagnosis might be partly responsible for its rising trend. It remains us to revise the guidelines to avoid unnecessary burdens. Moreover, we should pay attention to the risk factors of thyroid cancer. More targeted measures should be formulated to improve potential environmental and lifestyle‐related factors which might contribute to rising trend of thyroid cancer.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The substantial differences in socioeconomic and lifestyle exposures between urban and rural areas in China may lead to urban-rural disparity in cancer risk. This study aimed to assess the urban-rural disparity in cancer incidence in China. METHODS Using data from 36 regional cancer registries in China in 2008-2012, we compared the age-standardised incidence rates of cancer by sex and anatomic site between rural and urban areas. We calculated the rate difference and rate ratio comparing rates in rural versus urban areas by sex and cancer type. RESULTS The incidence rate of all cancers in women was slightly lower in rural areas than in urban areas, but the total cancer rate in men was higher in rural areas than in urban areas. The incidence rates in women were higher in rural areas than in urban areas for cancers of the oesophagus, stomach, and liver and biliary passages, but lower for cancers of thyroid and breast. Men residing in rural areas had higher incidence rates for cancers of the oesophagus, stomach, and liver and biliary passages, but lower rates for prostate cancer, lip, oral cavity and pharynx cancer, and colorectal cancer. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest substantial urban-rural disparity in cancer incidence in China, which varies across cancer types and the sexes. Cancer prevention strategies should be tailored for common cancers in rural and urban areas.

Abstract
Background Since the early 1980s, papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) incidence rates and the prevalence of obesity, a risk factor for PTC, have increased substantially in the United States. We estimated the proportion of PTC incidence in the United States attributable to overweight and obesity during 1995–2015. Methods National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health Study cohort data (n = 457 331 participants, 50–71 years and cancer-free at baseline) were used to estimate multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for PTC across body mass index categories. Population attributable fractions (PAFs) were calculated using estimated hazard ratios and annual overweight and obesity prevalence estimates from the National Health Interview Survey. PAF estimates were combined with Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-13 data to calculate annual percent changes in PTC incidence rates attributable (and unrelated) to overweight and obesity. Results Overweight (25.0–29.0 kg/m2) and obesity (≥30.0 kg/m2) were associated with 1.26-fold (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.05- to 1.52-fold) and 1.30-fold (95% CI = 1.05- to 1.62-fold) increased risks of PTC, respectively, and nearly threefold (HR = 2.93, 95% CI = 1.25 to 6.87) and greater than fivefold (HR = 5.42, 95% CI = 2.24 to 13.1) increased risks of large (>4 cm) PTCs compared with normal weight (18.5–24.9 kg/m2). During 1995–2015, PAF estimates for overweight and obesity increased from 11.4% to 16.2% for all PTCs and from 51.4% to 63.2% for large PTCs. Overweight or obesity accounted for 13.6% and 57.8% of the annual percent changes in total (5.9%/y) and large (4.5%/y) PTC incidence rates, respectively, during 1995–2015. Conclusions Overweight and obesity may have contributed importantly to the rapid rise in PTC incidence during 1995–2015. By 2015, we estimate that one of every six PTCs diagnosed among adults 60 years or older, including nearly two-thirds of large PTCs, were attributable to overweight and obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Thyroid cancer (TC) is the most common malignant disease of the endocrine system. Based on the previously published reports, the incidence of TC has been increasing in the past 25 years, and the reason for the increase is not yet clear. The present study aims to reveal the long-term trends and age-period-cohort effects for the incidence of TC in China and the U.S. from 1990 to 2017. METHODS We examined the trends of TC incidence and the average annual percentage change (AAPC) of rate using the Joinpoint regression analysis in the two countries, for the different genders (men/women) in the Global Burden of Disease (GBD 2017). We further used an age-period-cohort model to analyze age-period-cohort effects on TC incidence. RESULTS The ASIR of China increased markedly with AAPC of 4.5% (95% confidence interval (CI): 4.0, 5.0%) and 1.8% (1.6, 2.0%) for men and women during 1990-2017. The ASIR of the U. S increased by 1.4% (1.0, 1.8%) and 1.3% (0.9, 1.7%) for men and women from 1990 to 2017.TC increased with the age and period. Aging was one of the most influential factors of TC in China. The age effect increased markedly in the U.S. compared with China. The period effect showed an increase in China while that tended to grow steadily during 1990-2017 in the U.S. The cohort effect peaked in 1963-1967 birth cohorts for men and women in China and declined consistently in the birth cohort in the U.S. CONCLUSION From 1990 to 2017, due to ionizing radiation and over-diagnosis, age-standardized TC incidence rates in both genders rose in China and the U.S. The standardized incidence rate of women is higher than that of men. It is necessary to provide women with reasonable prevention and protection measures for TC. We need to apply for health services and screening to reduce ionizing radiation.

Abstract
Most investigations of iodine metabolism in humans and animals have focused on its role in thyroid function. However, considerable evidence indicates that iodine could also be implicated in the physiopathology of other organs. We review the literature that shows that molecular iodine (I2) exerts multiple and complex actions on the organs that capture it, not including its effects as part of thyroid hormones. This chemical form of iodine is internalized by a facilitated diffusion system that is evolutionary conserved, and its effects appear to be mediated by a variety of mechanisms and pathways. As an oxidized component, it directly neutralizes free radicals, induces the expression of type II antioxidant enzymes, or inactivates proinflammatory pathways. In neoplastic cells, I2 generates iodolipids with nuclear actions that include the activation of apoptotic pathways and the inhibition of markers related to stem cell maintenance, chemoresistance, and survival. Recently, I2 has been postulated as an immune modulator that depending on the cellular context, can function as an inhibitor or activator of immune responses. We propose that the intake of molecular iodine is increased in adults to at least 1 mg/day in specific pathologies to obtain the potential extrathyroid benefits described in this review.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Polyphenols are natural compounds with anticarcinogenic properties in cellular and animal models, but epidemiological evidence determining the associations of these compounds with thyroid cancer (TC) is lacking. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to evaluate the relations between blood concentrations of 36 polyphenols and TC risk in EPIC (the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition). METHODS A nested case-control study was conducted on 273 female cases (210 papillary, 45 follicular, and 18 not otherwise specified TC tumors) and 512 strictly matched controls. Blood polyphenol concentrations were analyzed by HPLC coupled to tandem MS after enzymatic hydrolysis. RESULTS Using multivariable-adjusted conditional logistic regression models, caffeic acid (ORlog2: 0.55; 95% CI: 0.33, 0.93) and its dehydrogenated metabolite, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylpropionic acid (ORlog2: 0.84; 95% CI: 0.71, 0.99), were inversely associated with differentiated TC risk. Similar results were observed for papillary TC, but not for follicular TC. Ferulic acid was also inversely associated only with papillary TC (ORlog2: 0.68; 95% CI: 0.51, 0.91). However, none of these relations was significant after Bonferroni correction for multiple testing. No association was observed for any of the remaining polyphenols with total differentiated, papillary, or follicular TC. CONCLUSIONS Blood polyphenol concentrations were mostly not associated with differentiated TC risk in women, although our study raises the possibility that high blood concentrations of caffeic, 3,4-dihydroxyphenylpropionic, and ferulic acids may be related to a lower papillary TC risk.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To summarize the latest evidence on head and neck cancer epidemiology from the International Head and Neck Cancer Epidemiology (INHANCE) consortium. SUBJECTS AND METHODS INHANCE was established in 2004 to elucidate the etiology of head and neck cancer through pooled analyses of individual-level data on a large scale. We summarize results from recent INHANCE-based publications updating our 2015 overview. RESULTS Seventeen papers were published between 2015 and May 2020. These studies further define the nature of risks associated with tobacco and alcohol, and occupational exposures on head and neck cancer. The beneficial effects on incidence of head and neck cancer were identified for good oral health, endogenous and exogenous hormonal factors, and selected aspects of diet related to fruit and vegetables. INHANCE has begun to develop risk prediction models and to pool follow-up data on their studies, finding that ~30% of cases had cancer recurrence and 9% second primary cancers, with overall- and disease-specific 5-year-survival of 51% and 57%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The number and importance of INHANCE scientific findings provides further evidence of the advantages of large-scale internationally collaborative projects and will support the development of prevention strategies.

Ecological Study on Thyroid Cancer Incidence and Mortality in Association with European Union Member States' Air Pollution. Abstract
Over the last few decades, thyroid cancer incidence has had a significant increase. Despite well-known genetic and epigenetic factors (radiation, overdiagnosis, already existing benign thyroid tumors), the effect of air pollution on its incidence and mortality has not yet been fully elucidated. In this study, air pollution data from 27 EU member states is used in order to analyze its association with thyroid cancer incidence, and mortality and socioeconomic factors are examined as confounders. This ecological study used age standardized thyroid cancer incidence and mortality rates per 100,000 people for the year 2012 from 27 EU member states, collected from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, World Health Organization and European Cancer. Data regarding mean air pollutant mass concentrations for 1992, 2002 and 2012 was collected from the European Environment Agency. Data analysis was carried out using Prism 5.0 and SPSS v.20. Multiple regression analysis showed a statistically significant positive association between thyroid cancer incidence in men and the environmental 2012 masse of Benzo (k) Fluoranthene (r2 = 0.2142, p = 0.042) and HexaChlorocycloHexane (r2 = 0.9993, p = 0.0166). Additionally, a statistically significant positive association was observed between the thyroid cancer mortality rate in men and the 1992 environmental concentrations of Hg (r2 = 0.1704, p = 0.043). Data indicates that some air pollutants may have an effect on increased thyroid cancer incidence and mortality, at least in men. However, causal relationships cannot be fully supported via ecological studies, and this article only focuses on the EU and uses only three distinct time periods.

Background: Thyroid cancer is the most common malignancy of the endocrine system and it has become the fastest growing cancer among women. The suspected risk factors include increased exposure to ionizing radiation during childhood, environmental pollutants, possible iodine deficiency, and excessive iodine exposure. Aims: To analyze the thyroid cancer incidence between 1980 and 2013 in Bulgaria and to determine the incidence rate before and after the introduction of universal salt iodization in 1994 in regions with different iodine deficiency levels. Study Design: Retrospective cohort. Methods: The study was a retrospective analysis of the total number of thyroid cancer cases with all histological types in Bulgaria (thyroid cancer, ICD10 code C73), diagnosed between 01/01/1980 and 31/12/2013, and retrieved from the anonymous cancer registry database of the Bulgarian National Cancer Registry. Age-standardized rates of thyroid cancer per 100,000 persons were calculated for each year of the periods mentioned below by sex and age, utilizing the WHO world reference populations with a special statistical module of the Bulgarian National Cancer Registry’s software CancerRegBG, 2011. Incidence rates were reported by age, sex, and period of diagnosis (1980-86, 1987-93, 1994-99, 2000-2006, 2007-2013). Trends among males and females were analyzed separately, as well as by age category: 0-19, 20-44, 45-64, and 65+. Annual percentage changes of age-standardized incidence rates were analyzed by Joinpoint regression to determine trends using the Joinpoint statistical software SEER* Stat Software, Version 4.1.1, 2014. Results: The age-standardized rates of thyroid cancer in Bulgaria has been increasing since 1990, being higher among women compared to men (4.68 vs 2.81). The highest age-standardized rates of thyroid cancer was observed in women in the 2007-2013 period. The only significant joinpoint was recorded in 1990 for females and in 1991 for males. The highest incidence rates was in the Smolyan district, a region with historically existing iodine deficiency and relatively high post-Chernobyl radiation exposure. Conclusion: Our results showed that, in different regions, the age-standardized thyroid cancer rates between endemic and non-endemic differ greatly depending on the radiation dose from the Chernobyl accident. The role of iodine intake in thyroid cancer remains uncertain, but iodine deficiency could be a contributing factor to the increased risk of thyroid cancer.

Abstract
Several studies have investigated the role of diet as a risk and/or protective factor against thyroid cancer, both considering individual foods, groups of foods and dietary patterns, but the results are not consistent. The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between dietary habits and thyroid cancer. Cases and controls were recruited at the University Hospital "G. Rodolico" of Catania. The dietary habits were defined through the "Lifestyle Assessment Questionnaire". The frequency of consumption of each food item was reported on a 4-level scale (never, one time a week, 2-3 times a week, every day of the week). We computed the odds ratios (ORs) of thyroid cancer and the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) according to the median of control group daily intake of each food group, using multiple logistic regression models adjusted for major confounding factors. Starchy foods (OR = 1.39, 95% CI 0.83-2.32), sweets (OR = 1.39, 95% CI 0.81-2.40) and products rich in salt and fat showed a positive association with thyroid cancer risk. Conversely, an inverse association with disease risk was found for vegetables (cruciferous OR = 0.30, 95% CI 0.10-0.92, non cruciferous OR = 0.57 (0.20-1.57) milk and dairy products (OR = 0.68, 95% CI 0.40-1.13) and seafood (OR = 0.68, 95% CI 0.34-1.22). An increased risk was observed for consumption of iodized salts (OR 2.06, 95% CI 1.21-3.51), tea (OR = 1.42, 95% CI 0.84-2.41) and coca-cola (OR = 3.08, 95% CI 1.53-6.20). Finally, our results confirm the protective effect of a daily water intake of 1-2 L, but unfortunately this quantity is usually consumed by about a quarter of the sample. Dietary habits appear to modify the risk of thyroid carcinoma. A diet with a limited consumption of starchy foods, products rich in salt, fat and sugar and a higher consumption of, cruciferous/non-cruciferous vegetables, milk and dairy products and seafood could be protective towards thyroid cancer. Moreover, the water intake should be increased and the actual need to consume iodized salt should be verified for each subject/area. These results warrant further investigations and, if confirmed, they might have important public health implications for the reduction of thyroid cancer through the improvement of dietary habits.

Abstract
Introduction: Prior research has shown an association between breast and thyroid cancers, although their relationship is unclear. In China, asymptomatic women undergoing regular health checkups usually undergo breast and thyroid ultrasonography screening. The present cross-sectional ultrasound-based study estimated the prevalence of breast masses (BM) and thyroid nodules (TN) and their relationship among a population-based cohort of Chinese women. Methods: This study included 34,184 consecutive asymptomatic Chinese women who underwent both breast and thyroid ultrasound evaluation during one health care examination. Detected lesions were assigned into categories of different malignant risks according to the Breast and Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-/TI-RADS). Binomial logistic regression was used to determine the association between occurrence of BM and TN, and multinomial logistic regression was used to analyze the correlation of BM and TN in different BI-/TI-RADS categories. Associations between BM and TN, as well as anthropometric and biochemical markers, were also explored. Results: Of those enrolled, 6371 (18.6%) had BM, 12,153 (35.6%) had TN, and 2279 (6.7%) had both. After adjusting for age, body mass index (BMI), and height, females with TN had a higher risk of BM (odds ratio [OR] = 1.151, 95% confidence interval [CI 1.081-1.225], p < 0.0001) than those with normal thyroids, and females with BM had a higher risk of TN (OR = 1.165 [CI 1.096-1.238], p < 0.0001) than those without BM. Women with a TN >10 mm (OR = 1.249 [CI 1.104-1.413], p = 0.0004) and those with a TN ≤10 mm (OR = 1.134 [CI 1.062-1.211], p = 0.0002) were at higher risk of BM compared with those with normal thyroids. As RADS categories increased, so did the correlation between BM and TN. The increased risk of TN was associated with a higher BMI, height, systolic blood pressure, and a lower plasma albumin level. The increased risk of BM was associated with a lower BMI, plasma albumin levels, and higher height. Conclusions: A high prevalence of BM and TN was detected by ultrasonography screening in this cohort of Chinese women. These lesions occurred frequently and simultaneously, particularly in women with lesions in higher RADS categories.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Thyroid cancer is the most pervasive endocrine cancer worldwide. Studies examining the association between thyroid cancer and country, sex, age, sociodemographic index (SDI), and other factors are lacking. OBJECTIVE To examine the thyroid cancer burden and variation trends at the global, regional, and national levels using data on sex, age, and SDI. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS In this cross-sectional study, epidemiologic data were gathered using the Global Health Data Exchange query tool, covering persons of all ages with thyroid cancer in 195 countries and 21 regions from January 1, 1990, to December 31, 2017; data analysis was completed on October 1, 2019. All participants met the Global Burden of Disease Study inclusion criteria. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Outcomes included incidence, deaths, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) of thyroid cancer. Measures were stratified by sex, region, country, age, and SDI. The estimated annual percentage changes (EAPCs) and age-standardized rates were calculated to evaluate the temporal trends. RESULTS Increases of thyroid cancer were noted in incident cases (169%), deaths (87%), and DALYs (75%). Age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) showed an upward trend over time, with an EAPC of 1.59 (95% CI, 1.51-1.67); decreases were noted in EAPCs of age-standardized death rate (-0.15; 95% CI, -0.19 to -0.12) and age-standardized DALY rate (-0.11; 95% CI, -0.15 to -0.08). Almost half (41.73% for incidence, 50.92% for deaths, and 54.39% for DALYs) of the thyroid cancer burden was noted in Southern and Eastern Asia. In addition, females accounted for most of the thyroid cancer burden (70.22% for incidence, 58.39% for deaths, and 58.68% for DALYs) and increased by years in this population, although the ASIR of males with thyroid cancer (EAPC, 2.18; 95% CI, 2.07-2.28) increased faster than that of females (EAPC, 1.38; 95% CI, 1.30-1.46). A third (34%) of patients with thyroid cancer resided in countries with a high SDI, and most patients were aged 50 to 69 years, which was older than the age in other quintiles (high SDI quintile compared with all other quintiles, P<.05). The most common age at onset of thyroid cancer worldwide was 15 to 49 years in female individuals compared with 50 to 69 years in male individuals (P<.05). Death from thyroid cancer was concentrated in participants aged 70 years or older and increased by years (average annual percentage change, 0.10; 95% CI, 0.01-0.21; P<.05). Furthermore, people in lower SDI quintiles developed thyroid cancer and died from it earlier than those in other quintiles (high and high-middle SDI vs low and low-middle SDI, P<.05). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Data from this study suggest considerable heterogeneity in the epidemiologic patterns of thyroid cancer across sex, age, SDI, region, and country, providing information for governments that may help improve national and local cancer control policies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Thyroid Cancer is one of the rarest cancers but its prevalence has been increasing worldwide for the last couple of decades. METHODS The data collection tool was designed to assess knowledge, awareness, perception, and attitude towards preventive practices of thyroid cancer in Pakistani university students. The data were collected over a duration of six months and a total number of 3722 students participated. RESULTS The knowledge of risk factors of thyroid cancer was an important parameter of this study. The students who knew all the early signs of thyroid cancer were 28.7%. In this study, the independent variables such as age, gender, demographic location, and financial status were found to be highly significant with knowledge, attitude towards warning signs of cancer, and the perception of students about developing thyroid cancer. CONCLUSIONS The participants were found to have poor knowledge about early signs of thyroid cancer. The study participants perception, behavior, and attitude towards preventive practices of thyroid cancer were found inadequate and appropriate measures on a National level should be taken to enhance the knowledge about preventive practices of thyroid cancer. Increasing knowledge and awareness shall help decrease the overall morbidity and mortality linked with thyroid carcinomas and thyroid diseases.

Abstract
Background: CDK12 is a potential therapeutic target in papillary thyroid cancer that regulates the c-myc/β-catenin pathway. Objective: We aimed to explore the specific mechanism of CDK12 in papillary thyroid cancer and provide a new target of cancer therapy. Methods: RT-qPCR was used to determine the CDK12 mRNA expression level. An IHC assay was performed to detect the tissue expression of CDK12. Then, we downregulated CDK12 expression in the thyroid cancer cell lines TPC-1-shCDK12 and KAT-5-shCDK12. CCK8 assays, colony formation assays, and animal xenograft models were used to evaluate the effect of CDK12 on tumorigenesis. Transwell assays and in vivo metastasis models were used to observe whether CDK12 can promote cancer metastasis. Western blotting further confirmed the mechanism of CDK12 in papillary thyroid cancer through the c-myc/β-catenin pathway. Results: Upregulated CDK12 expression in papillary thyroid cancer promoted papillary thyroid cancer carcinogenesis in vivo, and in vitro CDK12 strengthened papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) cell migration and tumor metastasis. CDK12 promoted tumor progression by regulating c-myc/β-catenin pathway activation. Conclusions: CDK12 affects the c-myc/β-catenin pathway to stimulate papillary thyroid cancer proliferation and metastasis. Inhibiting CDK12 might be a new method in papillary thyroid cancer therapy.

Abstract
Polyphenols are bioactive compounds with several anticarcinogenic activities; however, human data regarding associations with thyroid cancer (TC) is still negligible. Our aim was to evaluate the association between intakes of total, classes and subclasses of polyphenols and risk of differentiated TC and its main subtypes, papillary and follicular, in a European population. The European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition cohort included 476,108 men and women from 10 European countries. During a mean follow-up of 14 years, there were 748 incident differentiated TC cases, including 601 papillary and 109 follicular tumors. Polyphenol intake was estimated at baseline using validated center/country-specific dietary questionnaires and the Phenol-Explorer database. In multivariable-adjusted Cox regression models, no association between total polyphenol and the risks of overall differentiated TC (HRQ4 vs. Q1 = 0.99, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.77-1.29), papillary (HRQ4 vs. Q1 = 1.06, 95% CI 0.80-1.41) or follicular TC (HRQ4 vs. Q1 = 1.10, 95% CI 0.55-2.22) were found. No associations were observed either for flavonoids, phenolic acids or the rest of classes and subclasses of polyphenols. After stratification by body mass index (BMI), an inverse association between the intake of polyphenols (p-trend = 0.019) and phenolic acids (p-trend = 0.007) and differentiated TC risk in subjects with BMI ≥ 25 was observed. In conclusion, our study showed no associations between dietary polyphenol intake and differentiated TC risk; although further studies are warranted to investigate the potential protective associations in overweight and obese individuals.

Abstract
Introduction: Management of recurrent differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) may include surgery, radioactive iodine (RAI), and external beam radiotherapy (EBRT). Systemic therapy may also be offered for RAI-refractory DTC. The study objective was to review patterns of practice in British Columbia (BC) for treatment of recurrent DTC, assess rates of RAI-refractory disease, and evaluate outcomes. Methods: BC Cancer provides cancer care to a population of 4.6 million. A retrospective review of all patients with DTC stage I-IVB disease referred to BC Cancer from 2009 to 2013 was conducted. Patient and DTC characteristics, locoregional and distant recurrence, surgical management, RAI, EBRT, and systemic therapy details were retrospectively collected. Relapse-free survival (RFS), overall survival (OS), and disease-specific survival (DSS) were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Results/Discussion: Some 1062 DTC patients were identified. Median follow-up was 4.1 years. Baseline characteristics: female 74%, median age 50, papillary/follicular/Hurthle cell 92%/6%/2%. Stage at presentation: I 60%, II 8%, III 22%, IVA/IVB 10%. Locoregional and/or distant recurrence occurred in 136 patients (13%). Locoregional recurrence (n=118) was treated with surgery +/- RAI or EBRT 48%, RAI +/- EBRT 40%, EBRT alone 1%, 11% were observed without treatment. Some 27 patients had a second cancer recurrence. Some 37 patients (3%) developed distant metastatic disease and common sites of distant metastases were: lung 76%, bone 30%, and liver 8%. Some 27 cases (2%) were deemed RAI-refractory. Some six patients (0.6%) received systemic therapy with a vascular endothelial growth factor tyrosine kinase inhibitor (VEGF TKI). Five-year RFS was calculated to be 82%, OS 95%, and DSS 98% for the study population. Conclusions: In our population-based study cohort, 87% of patients were rendered disease-free by primary disease management. Multi-modality treatment of locoregional recurrence facilitated disease-free status in the majority of patients (67%). RAI-refractory disease developed in 2% of patients and despite a significant number of metastatic recurrences, only a small number of patients received systemic therapy.

Abstract
Background Thyroid cancer (TC) is an endocrine disease, and its progression is regulated by many factors, including circular RNAs (circRNAs). However, as a new circRNA, the role of circ_0058124 in TC is worth further exploration. Methods The expression levels of circ_0058124, microRNA-940 (miR-940) and mitogen-activated protein kinase 1 (MAPK1) were assessed by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (q-PCR). The circular characteristic of circ_0058124 was identified by oligo (dT)18 primers, Ribonuclease R (RNase R) and Actinomycin D (ActD), and its localization was determined by nuclear-cytoplasmic separation assay. Also, cell proliferation was detected by colony formation assay, and cell migration and invasion were assessed by transwell assay. Further, Seahorse XF Extracellular Flux Analyzer was used to measure the oxygen consumption rate (OCR) of cells. Besides, dual-luciferase reporter, RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP) and RNA pull-down assays were used to identify the mechanism of circ_0058124. Western blot (WB) analysis was used to test the MAPK1 protein level. In addition, mice xenograft models were constructed to test the effect of circ_0058124 on TC tumor growth in vivo. Results Circ_0058124 was highly expressed in TC and is a stable cyclic transcript, mainly located in the cytoplasm. Circ_0058124 knockdown suppressed proliferation, migration, invasion and metabolic abilities in TC cells. MiR-940 could be absorbed by circ_0058124, and the inhibition effect of its overexpression on TC progression could be reversed by overexpressed-circ_0058124. MAPK1 was a target of miR-940, and the suppression effect of its silencing on TC progression could be inverted by miR-940 inhibitor. Besides, MAPK1 expression was regulated by circ_0058124 and miR-940. Interference of circ_0058124 also reduced TC tumor growth in vivo. Conclusion Circ_0058124 might play a carcinogenic role in TC progression by regulating the miR-940/MAPK1 axis, which might provide a new idea for the treatment of TC.

Abstract
Purpose: In this study, we aimed to evaluate ABO blood groups and Rh factor in patients with thyroid cancer.Methods: Demographical and clinical features, cytological results, ABO blood groups, and Rh factor status of patients with benign and malignant thyroid disease were evaluated. Histopathological features of thyroid cancer were compared in Rh positive and negative patients, and patients with different ABO blood groups.Results: Histopathological diagnosis was benign in 1,299 (63.5%) and malignant in 744 (36.5%) patients. There was no significant difference between benign and malignant patients in terms of age, sex, thyroid autoantibody positivity, and ABO blood groups (p > .05 for each). A significantly higher rate of patients with malignant disease were Rh positive compared to patients with benign disease (91.8% vs. 88.1%, p = .046). In thyroid cancer patients, extrathyroidal extension and advanced stage (3-4) were observed more frequently in patients with B compared to non-B blood groups (p = .028 and 0.042, respectively). The likelihood of the extrathyroidal extension was 4.272 (95%: 1.816-10.049) times higher in B blood group compared to non-B blood groups in patients with multifocal disease (p < .001). Patients with O blood group had lower rate of capsular invasion than patients with non-O blood groups (p = .018).Conclusion: Patients with B blood group had higher risk of extrathyroidal extension and advanced stage compared to patients with non-B blood group.

Abstract
The incidence of differentiated thyroid cancer has been increasing in the last decades all over the world. Such a steady growth cannot be entirely attributable to more intensive thyroid nodule screening and more sensitive diagnostic procedures. Several environmental factors have changed with sufficient rapidity in the same time frame and may represent credible candidates for this increase. They include modified iodine intake, lifestyle-associated risk factors, exposure to various toxic compounds, pollutants and xenobiotics, nutritional deficiencies, eating habits and comorbidities. Foremost, nutritional patterns have gained high interest as possible promoters and modifiable risk factors for thyroid cancer in recent years. The aim of this narrative review is to focus on the relationship between thyroid cancer and nutritional factors, dietary habits and obesity. Low iodine intake has been associated to increased risk of thyroid cancer, favoring the development of more aggressive histotypes. Moreover, correction of iodine deficiency can shift thyroid cancer subtypes toward less aggressive forms, without affecting the overall risk for cancer. Actually, evidence regarding the association between selenium and vitamin D deficiency and thyroid cancer is very limited, despite their well-known anti-cancer potentials, and the clinical usefulness of their supplementation is still uncertain in this setting. Albeit the relationship between single foods and thyroid cancer is difficult to examine, fish and iodine-rich foods, vegetables, and fruits might exert protective effects on thyroid cancer risk. Conversely, no clear association has been found for other foods to date. Lastly, a clear association between obesity and the risk of thyroid cancer, with more aggressive behavior, seems to emerge from most studies, likely involving variations in thyroid function and chronic inflammation mediated by cytokines, insulin, leptin and adiponectins. Although no definite association between dietary factors and thyroid cancer has been firmly established so far, some nutritional patterns, together with excessive weight, seem to play a relevant role in thyroid cancer carcinogenesis as well as in its severity and aggressiveness. These effects may play an additive role to the well-established one exerted by environmental carcinogens, such as pollutants and radiation exposure.

Abstract
The study was primarily aimed at investigating the effect of brassica sprout consumption, namely rutabaga (Brassica napus L. var. napobrassica) sprouts (R) generally recognized as antithyroid agent due to its goitrogenic substance content, on hematological, biochemical, and immunological parameters in rats. Sprouts were tested alone and in a combination with other antithyroid factors, such as iodine deficiency (RDI) and sulfadimethoxine (RS). The expression of the heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) gene in the thyroid as a stress-inducible protein was determined. The thermographic analysis was also estimated. The intake of rutabaga sprouts by healthy rats did not reveal any significant, harmful effect on the thyroid function. Both body temperature and expression of HO-1 remained unchanged in response to the consumed sprouts. In animals with hypothyroidism, rutabaga sprouts enhanced the negative effect of iodine deficiency or sulfadimethoxine ingestion on the organism by increasing the WBC (RDI), TNF-α (RS), creatinine (RS), and triglyceride (RDI and RS) levels, as well as decreasing PLT (RS) level. Moreover, rutabaga sprout consumption by rats with iodine deficiency and sulfadimethoxine decreased their body temperature. Additionally, the concomitant administration of sprouts and iodine depletion significantly reduced the expression of HO-1 in the thyroid. The results may prove useful in confirming rutabaga sprout consumption to be safe, though the seeds of this vegetable provide a well-known antithyroid agent. Our results have shown that rutabaga sprout consumption may be also a factor that enhances the negative clinical features only when combined with iodine deficiency and sulfadimethoxine ingestion.

Abstract
PURPOSE Coffee and tea constituents have shown several anti-carcinogenic activities in cellular and animal studies, including against thyroid cancer (TC). However, epidemiological evidence is still limited and inconsistent. Therefore, we aimed to investigate this association in a large prospective study. METHODS The study was conducted in the EPIC (European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition) cohort, which included 476,108 adult men and women. Coffee and tea intakes were assessed through validated country-specific dietary questionnaires. RESULTS During a mean follow-up of 14 years, 748 first incident differentiated TC cases (including 601 papillary and 109 follicular TC) were identified. Coffee consumption (per 100 mL/day) was not associated either with total differentiated TC risk (HRcalibrated 1.00, 95% CI 0.97-1.04) or with the risk of TC subtypes. Tea consumption (per 100 mL/day) was not associated with the risk of total differentiated TC (HRcalibrated 0.98, 95% CI 0.95-1.02) and papillary tumor (HRcalibrated 0.99, 95% CI 0.95-1.03), whereas an inverse association was found with follicular tumor risk (HRcalibrated 0.90, 95% CI 0.81-0.99), but this association was based on a sub-analysis with a small number of cancer cases. CONCLUSIONS In this large prospective study, coffee and tea consumptions were not associated with TC risk.
