Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate sleep duration and sleep loss during antenatal period and assess associative factors, including maternal characteristic and mood symptoms. METHODS A cohort of 3038 women was enrolled. Self-reported sleep duration and sleep loss, the latter being calculated from preferred sleep need and actual sleep duration, were measured in early, mid- and late pregnancy, and at delivery. The associations with age, BMI, parity, education, smoking, napping, and depressive and anxiety symptoms were evaluated. RESULTS Sleep duration was longest in early pregnancy and shortest at delivery (7.93 h-7.76 h, p < 0.001). The proportion of short sleepers (< 6 h) increased from 1.4% to 5.9% throughout the studied period (p < 0.001). Mean sleep loss remained stable in early- and mid-pregnancy, lowering in late pregnancy (p < 0.001) and increasing again until delivery (p = 0.003). The number of women with notable sleep loss (> 2 h) was similar during the first three measurement points (9.4%, 8.9% and 9.5%), but increased until delivery (14.1%, p < 0.001). Older, multiparous, and more-depressive women slept less (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p = 0.017). Women with higher BMI were more likely to sleep < 6 h in late pregnancy (p = 0.012). Multiparous, more-depressive, and higher-BMI women reported more sleep loss (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p = 0.049). CONCLUSION We confirmed earlier reported decrease in sleep duration at the end of pregnancy. As a novel finding, we showed a notable increase in sleep loss during the last month of pregnancy. Various factors were associated with both short sleep and sleep loss, especially multiparity, napping and depressive symptoms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Sleep problems are common in pregnant women and sleep is altered during pregnancy. However, the associations between sleep trajectory patterns and adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes are unclear. The current study aims to identify sleep trajectory patterns and explore their associations with adverse perinatal outcomes in a prospective cohort study. METHODS Pregnant women (N = 232) completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index each trimester during pregnancy in Tianjin, China. Perinatal outcomes were extracted from the hospital delivery records. Latent class growth analysis (LCGA) described the trajectories of sleep timing, duration, and efficiency. Multivariable linear regression and multivariable logistic regression were employed to evaluate associations between sleep trajectory patterns and perinatal outcomes. RESULTS Trajectories were identified for bedtime (early, 49.1%; delaying, 50.9%), wake-up time (early, 82.8% of the sample; late, 17.2%), duration (short, 5.2%; adequate 78.0%; excessive, 16.8%), and efficiency (high, 88.4%; decreasing, 11.6%). Compared with women in more optimal sleep groups, those in the late wake-up, excessive duration, and decreasing efficiency groups had babies with shorter birth lengths (β range, -0.50 to -0.28, p < 0.05). Moreover, women in the decreasing efficiency group had babies with lower birth weight (β, -0.44; p < 0.05). Women in the delaying bedtime group had greater odds of preterm delivery (OR, 4.57; p < 0.05), while those in the decreasing efficiency group had greater odds of cesarean section (OR, 3.12; p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Less optimal sleep trajectory patterns during pregnancy are associated with perinatal outcomes. Therefore, early assessment of maternal sleep during pregnancy is significant for identifying at-risk women and initiating interventions to reduce perinatal outcomes.

Abstract
Sleep quality and depression during pregnancy often affect women's adaptation to motherhood and are linked with adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. Using a prospective cohort study comprising 190 pregnant women in central Taiwan, we investigated the trajectories of sleep quality and depressive symptoms and their associated predictors in perinatal women from pregnancy to postpartum. Sleep and depressive symptoms were assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, respectively, from mid-pregnancy to 3 months postpartum. We used group-based trajectory modelling and logistic regression modelling to analyse the data collected from the structured questionnaires. Pregnant women (50.5% primipara) with a mean (standard deviation) age of 32.3 (4.1) years were included. We identified three distinctive classes of sleep quality trajectories during the perinatal period: 'stable good' (18.4%), 'increasing poor' (48.9%), and 'stable poor' (32.6%). We further detected three stable trajectories of depressive symptoms: 'stable low' (36.3%), 'stable mild' (42.1%), and 'stable high' (21.6%). A significant association between sleep quality and depression trajectories was evident (p < 0.001). High fatigue symptoms and low social support predicted the high trajectories of poor sleep and depressive symptoms. Distinctive dynamic sleep quality and stable depression trajectories were characterised. Our findings revealed that both the sleep and depression trajectories were closely associated with one another, with common predictors of fatigue symptoms and social support. The early assessment of maternal sleep and depression status is important for identifying at-risk women and initiating interventions tailored to perinatal women to improve their sleep and mental health.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Pregnancy has been associated with restless legs syndrome (RLS). RLS is underdiagnosed in most countries. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of RLS among Saudi pregnant women. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 459 pregnant women from all Saudi provinces between December 2022 and March 2023. A structured online questionnaire assessing demographic and pregnancy characteristics, medical conditions, sleep quality, and RLS symptoms was conducted. RESULTS The prevalence of RLS was 26.6% among the participants. Calcium deficiency was significantly associated with RLS (adjusted odds ratio (OR)=2.16, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.2-3.9, p=0.01), but there was no significant association between RLS and vitamin D and iron deficiencies (p>0.05), according to multivariate binary logistic regression analysis. Moreover, RLS increased the risk of insomnia and frequent waking up (adjusted OR=4.95, 95% CI=2.50-9.83, p<0.001, and adjusted OR=2.87, 95% CI=1.55-5.32, p=0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION RLS is common among pregnant women in Saudi Arabia. The study indicates that RLS during pregnancy is linked to calcium deficiency and negatively affects sleep quality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep problems and cognitive changes are typical in pregnant women with depressive symptoms. However, the relationship between sleep quality and executive dysfunction remains unclear. This study aims to explore the differences in sleep quality and cognitive inhibition between pregnant women with and without depressive symptoms in the third trimester of pregnancy and investigate the correlations between sleep quality, cognitive inhibition and depressive symptoms. METHODS In the third trimester, 169 women without depressive symptoms and 88 women with depressive symptoms participated in the study. Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Questionnaire (EPDS) was used to assess depressive symptoms, and Pittsburgh Standard Sleep Quality Index Questionnaire (PSQI) was used to investigate sleep quality. The color-word Stroop task is used to evaluate cognitive inhibition. RESULTS Compared with women without depressive symptoms, pregnant women with depressive symptoms showed worse sleep quality and Stroop task performances (response speed and accuracy). In addition, the speed of cognitive inhibition plays a mediating role in the relationship between sleep quality and prenatal depressive symptoms. CONCLUSION This research emphasizes the importance of sleep quality screening and cognitive training for depression during pregnancy and childbirth in ensuring women's mental health during pregnancy and childbirth.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the self-reported SB prevalence and explore associated risk factors in puerperal women who had given birth in Rio Grande, Southern Brazil. METHODS A single, standardized questionnaire was given within the 48 h postpartum period. Self-reported SB was the main outcome investigated. Chi-square test was used to compare proportions, and Poisson regression with robust variance adjustment was used in the multivariate analysis. RESULTS A total of 2225 women were included. Only 79 (3.6%) of these reported clenching or grinding their teeth during sleep. Adjusted analysis showed that the higher education level of the mothers (PR = 3.07; 95% CI 1.49-6.28; P = 0.006); living with three or more persons in the household (PR = 0.54; 95% CI 0.34-0.84; P = 0.007); medication intake during pregnancy (PR = 1.68; 95% CI 1.09-2.58; P = 0.017); smoking (PR = 1.93; 1.16-3.23; P = 0.024), or ever smoked (PR = 1.82; 95% CI 0.85-3.90; P = 0.024); severe anxiety (PR = 1.36; 95% CI 0.61-3.02; P = 0.005); and headache upon waking (PR = 4.19; 95% CI 1.95-9.00; P < 0.001) were significantly associated with self-reported SB. CONCLUSION FOR PRACTICE Our data pointed towards new factors in a specific group of women that may be relevant for preventing sleep-related behaviors in the pregnancy-puerperal cycle. The higher levels of education, medication intake, smoking or even smoked, severe anxiety, the higher the probability of puerperal woman to self-report SB. The nighttime tooth clenching strongly increased headache upon waking.

Abstract
RESUMO Objetivo: Identificar as características do sono e os fatores associados ao sono de má qualidade ao longo dos trimestres gestacionais. Método: Estudo longitudinal, quantitativo, com três períodos de acompanhamento, nos trimestres gestacionais (denominados T1, T2 e T3). Estudo longitudinal com 50 gestantes sem comorbidades. Utilizou-se os instrumentos: caracterização sociodemográfica e clínica, Índice de Qualidade do Sono de Pittsburgh e Diário de Sono. Os dados foram analisados por testes estatísticos (Qui-quadrado, testes não paramétricos e modelos de regressão). Resultados: Identificou-se que 55,3% das gestantes relataram sono de má qualidade em T1, 39,5% em T2 e 65,8% em T3 e que, em T3, houve 67% a mais de risco de relatos de sono de má qualidade do que em T2. Conclusão: Considerando-se a elevada prevalência de má qualidade do sono, principalmente no terceiro trimestre, compreende-se o pré-natal como um momento de aprendizado e oportunidade para os enfermeiros desenvolverem ações de educação, orientação e higiene do sono.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify sleep characteristics and factors associated with sleep issues during pregnancy. METHOD This is a longitudinal, with three follow-up periods at each gestational trimester (called T1, T2 and T3). Fifty (50) pregnant women without comorbidities started the study. The following instruments were used: sociodemographic and clinical characterization, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Sleep Diary. Data were analyzed using statistical tests (Chi-square, non-parametric tests and regression models). RESULTS We identified that 55.3% of the pregnant women reported sleep disorders in T1, 39.5% in T2, and 65.8% in T3; in T3, the risk of reporting sleep problems increased by 67% in comparison with T2. CONCLUSION Considering the high prevalence of poor-quality sleep, especially in the third trimester, prenatal care is understood as a moment of intense learning and an opportunity for nurses to develop actions concerning education, guidance and sleep hygiene.

Abstract
Maternal sleep patterns during pregnancy are drawing increased attention to examine its role in the regulation of maternal glycemia and physical growth of offspring within 24 months. Among 3329 eligible mother−child pairs included in the Shanghai Maternal−Child Pairs Cohort, sleep patterns of pregnant women were assessed by Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and objective measurement in early and late pregnancy. Offspring physical growth within 24 months was primarily indicated by the body mass index Z-score (BAZ), catch-up growth, and overweight/obesity. In total, 3329 and 382 pregnant women were included with subjectively assessed and objectively measured sleep pattern, respectively. The increased risk of GDM was associated with maternal night-time sleep duration ≥8.5 h in early pregnancy, or sleep quality change from poor to good during pregnancy (OR = 1.48; 95% CI, 1.06 to 2.07). In the GDM group, the effect of sleep duration in early pregnancy on overweight/obesity in offspring within 24 months showed a U-shaped curve, with a 1.73-fold and 1.43-fold increased risk of overweight/obesity of offspring in pregnant women with <7.5 or ≥8.5 h of sleep duration, respectively. A good gestational sleep pattern was required to reduce the risk of GDM and offspring overweight/obesity within 24 months.

Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this systematic review was to examine aromatherapy interventions for prenatal and postnatal women, and to determine the effectiveness of these interventions on fatigue. Methods Six national and international databases were reviewed to retrieve and collect studies published up to September 7, 2021, describing randomized controlled trials and controlled clinical trials of aromatherapy interventions for prenatal and postnatal women's fatigue. Of the 323 articles initially identified, 64 duplicates were excluded and 259 were screened. After further excluding 216 articles not related to PICO framework, 10 were selected for review. Two reviewers independently selected studies and conducted data extraction and quality appraisal using Cochran's Risk of Bias and Risk of Bias Assessment Tool for Non-randomized Studies. Results The quality of the 10 selected studies was overall satisfactory. A meta-analysis of three studies showed that aromatherapy with lavender oil? produced a 0.75-point reduction in postnatal mothers' fatigue when compared to control groups. Sleep quality was also analyzed as a secondary outcome of fatigue. A meta-analysis of four studies using lavender and/or orange peel oil found that aromatherapy produced a 0.98-point improvement in postnatal mothers' quality of sleep. Although a meta-analysis could not be conducted to synthesize the findings for fatigue in pregnant women, inhalation and massage therapy using lavender oil showed positive effects on prenatal fatigue and sleep quality. Conclusion Aromatherapy using lavender oil and orange peel oil is effective in improving prenatal and postnatal fatigue and sleep quality.

Abstract
Most women in the perinatal period face sleep issues, which can affect their mental health. Only a few studies have focused on sleep trajectories and depressive symptoms of women during the perinatal period in China. This study aims to explore the development trajectory of sleep quality by classifying pregnant women according to the changes in their sleep quality during pregnancy and postpartum and investigate the correlation between different sleep quality trajectory groups and depressive symptoms. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess the sleep quality, and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) was used to assess the symptoms of depression. Participants (n = 412) completed the assessment of sleep quality, depressive symptoms, and some sociodemographic and obstetric data at 36 weeks of gestation, 1 week after delivery, and 6 weeks after delivery. The group-based trajectory model (GBTM) was used to complete the trajectory classification, and logistic regression was used to analyze the predictive factors of postpartum depressive symptoms. Four different sleep quality trajectories were determined: "stable-good," "worsening," "improving," and "stable-poor" groups. The results demonstrate that poor sleep trajectories, social support and parenting experience during the perinatal period are related to postpartum depression. Screening for prenatal sleep problems is crucial for identifying the onset of perinatal depressive symptoms.

Abstract
Background Little is known about the physical therapists’ practice and perceptions toward management of pregnancy/postpartum-related disorders in Taiwan. The aim of this study was to document current practice of physical therapy in antepartum and postpartum care in Taiwan. Methods An exploratory, cross-sectional study was conducted in registered physical therapists living in Taiwan. An anonymized online survey was designed, piloted, and advertised widely from March 2020 to March 2021. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chi square analysis and multivariate logistic regression. Results Of the 364 respondents, 37.6% had experience of treating pregnant or postpartum women in clinical practice. The most commonly treated pregnancy/postpartum-related disorder in practice was low back pain (61.3%). All respondents reported little to moderate level of confidence in their ability to manage pregnancy/postpartum-related disorder. Being female (p < 0.01); working at a regional hospital (p = 0.01), district hospital or district teaching hospital (p < 0.01), clinic (p = 0.01) or physiotherapy clinic (p = 0.01); and having prior experience of treating antepartum or postpartum women (p < 0.01) were significantly associated with willingness to provide customer-oriented service or health education to patients/clients with pregnancy/postpartum-related disorder after controlling for other confounding variables. The most commonly reported barrier was “lack of available training” (81.3%). Conclusion The majority of participating physical therapists indicated a positive attitude to antepartum and postpartum care but were not confident in management of various pregnancy/postpartum-related disorder in practices. The findings of this study highlight the educational needs related to antepartum and postpartum care in clinical practice for physical therapists in Taiwan.

Abstract
Background Pregnancy associated sleep disturbances is a common pregnancy-related complication which can lead to significant maternal distress and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Sleep quality can be affected by multiple factors and obesity has been recognized as one of them. Various previous studies have demonstrated poorer sleep quality during pregnancy. However, most studies included assessment at only one point of pregnancy. This prospective cohort study aimed to better evaluate the effect of pregnancy on the quality of sleep throughout the antenatal period and how BMI affects antenatal sleep. Methods A total of 926 women were recruited before 14 weeks of gestation and followed throughout pregnancy. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire (PSQI) was employed to assess sleep quality in 4 antenatal visits throughout pregnancy. Their weight was also recorded at each visit. Results The PSQI global score was higher towards the later part of pregnancy (6.4 to 8.0, p < 0.001) and highest at the 4th visit. Sleep latency was longer as pregnancy progressed (18.5 mins to 23.2 mins, p = 0.001). Sleep duration became shorter over time and was the shortest at the 4th visit (7.1 h to 6.5 h, p < 0.001). Sleep efficiency was the lowest at the 4th visit (85.2 to 81.6%, p < 0.001). The same trend was observed for subjects in different BMI groups throughput pregnancy. PSQI score increased and sleep duration decreased as BMI increased. The effect of increasing BMI on PSQI and sleep duration was only observed in the higher BMI groups (> 25 kg/m2). Conclusions Our study showed that sleep quality gradually declined throughout pregnancy for all BMI groups. Higher BMI was associated with poorer sleep as represented by PSQI score and sleep duration, particularly in the overweight and obese subgroups. Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aims of this study were to examine the incidence and correlates of insomnia and its impact on health-related quality of life among Chinese pregnant women. METHOD A cross-sectional study was performed from November 2018 to April 2019 in a university-affiliated general hospital in Guangzhou, China. Seven hundred and seventeen pregnant women completed the 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), and the obstetric and sociodemographic data sheet. FINDINGS 24.3% of the pregnant women suffered from insomnia. Compared with women without insomnia, those with insomnia had a significantly lower health-related quality of life during pregnancy. Maternal age, educational level, occupation, economic status, insurance coverage, gestational age, the woman's relationship with her mother-in-law and anxiety were significantly associated with insomnia among pregnant women. CONCLUSION The incidence of insomnia among pregnant women is high, and insomnia is negatively correlated with health-related quality of life. Appropriate measures and practical therapeutic programmes should be provided to prevent the adverse effects of insomnia in pregnant women with advanced maternal age, lower education, lower economic status, unemployment, lack of insurance coverage, unsatisfied with their relationships with their mothers-in-law, and suffering from anxiety symptoms, especially in the third trimester.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep disorders are common in perinatal women and may underlie or trigger anxiety and depression. We aimed to translate and validate and evaluate the psychometric properties of the Italian version of the Insomnia Symptom Questionnaire (ISQ), in a sample of women during late pregnancy and 6-months postpartum according to the DSM-5 criteria. METHODS The ISQ was administered to 292 women prenatally along with other measures of sleep quality, depression, and anxiety, to examine its construct and convergent validity. Women were readministered the ISQ six months postdelivery to assess test-retest reliability. Women were divided into DSM-5 No-Insomnia (N = 253) and Insomnia (N = 39) groups. RESULTS The insomnia group had received more psychopharmacotherapy, had more psychiatric family history, increased rates of medically assisted reproduction, of past perinatal psychiatric disorders, and scored higher on almost all TEMPS-A dimensions, on the EPDS, HCL-32, PSQI, and on ISQ prenatally and postnatally. ISQ scores correlated with all scales, indicating adequate convergent and discriminant validity; furthermore, it showed antenatal-postnatal test-retest reliability, 97.5% diagnostic accuracy, 79.5% sensitivity, 94.9% specificity, 70.5% positive predictive power, and 92.8% negative predictive power. CONCLUSIONS The ISQ is useful, valid, and reliable for assessing perinatal insomnia in Italian women. The Italian version showed equivalent properties to the original version.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Pregnant and postpartum women experience significant sleep disruption, but the role of perinatal sleep disturbances in breastfeeding is understudied. METHODS In this observational cohort study, we used mixed methods to examine associations between perinatal sleep and breastfeeding. Forty-eight women (mean age 28.2 ± 4.9 years) who were euthymic at enrollment but had a history of major depression (n = 43) or bipolar disorder (n = 5) had sleep recorded with wrist actigraphy. We determined feeding status through daily diaries and used semi-structured interviews to identify themes regarding participants' experiences, breastfeeding decisions, and behaviors. To examine whether sleep disturbance during pregnancy predicted breastfeeding (BF) rates, we defined "lower sleep efficiency" (LSE) and "higher sleep efficiency" (HSE) groups based on the median split of actigraphic SE at 33 weeks' gestation (cutoff SE = 84.9%) and classified mothers as No-BF, Mixed-BF (BF + formula), and Exclusive-BF at 2 weeks postpartum. RESULTS Percentages of women who did any breastfeeding were: Week 2 = 72.3%, Week 6 = 62.5%, Week 16 = 50%. LSE mothers were less likely than HSE mothers to initiate breastfeeding (percent No-BF: LSE = 45.8%, HSE = 16.7%, P < .05). Average actigraphic sleep onset, sleep offset, time in bed, sleep duration, and SE did not differ based on breastfeeding status at any time point. Qualitative themes included insufficient preparation for the demands of breastfeeding, interrupted and nonrestorative sleep, and unrelenting daytime tiredness. CONCLUSIONS In our sample, preserved actigraphic SE during pregnancy was associated with initiation and continuation of breastfeeding. Future work should examine whether improving sleep in pregnancy improves mothers' feeding experiences.

Abstract
Background There were inconsistent findings in the literature regarding the associations of physical activity and sleep duration during pregnancy with caesarean delivery for different reasons. It was also unknown whether physical activity and sleep duration during pregnancy had interactive effects on the risks of different types of caesarean delivery. The study aimed to investigate the effects of physical activity, sleep duration and their interactions on the risk of caesarean delivery for medical reasons and non-medical reasons. Methods From October 2010 to August 2012, a prospective population-based cohort of 13,015 pregnant women was established in six central urban districts of Tianjin, China. Pregnancy outcomes were retrieved from an electronic database and caesarean delivery was divided into caesarean delivery for medical reasons and caesarean delivery for non-medical reasons. Physical activity and sleep status were collected at 24–28 weeks of gestation using self-reported questionnaires. Logistic regression and additive interaction were used to examine physical activity, sleep duration and their interactive effects on risk of caesarean delivery. Results In the cohort, 5692 (43.7%) and 2641 (20.3%) of women had caesarean delivery for medical reasons and non-medical reasons, respectively. Low physical activity increased the risk of caesarean delivery for medical reasons (adjusted OR: 1.13, 95%CI 1.04–1.23) but not caesarean delivery for non-medical reasons. Sleep duration < 7 h/day and poor sleep quality were not associated with caesarean delivery. Sleep duration ≥9 h/day increased the risk of caesarean delivery for medical reasons (1.12, 1.02–1.22) and caesarean delivery for non-medical reasons (1.16, 1.05–1.29). Co-presence of low physical activity and sleep duration ≥9 h/day increased risk of caesarean delivery (1.25, 1.12–1.41), and their additive interaction was statistically significant for caesarean delivery for medical reasons but not for caesarean delivery for non-medical reasons. Conclusions Low physical activity and excessive sleep duration during pregnancy each increased the risk of caesarean delivery, and they had an interactive effect on the risk of caesarean delivery for medical reasons but not on the risk of caesarean delivery for non-medical reasons. Increasing physical activity and maintaining recommended sleep duration during pregnancy may have benefits for perinatal health. Abstract
The aim of this study was to identify the relationship between musculoskeletal problems and sleep quality and exposure to occupational hazards in working pregnant women. The study included a total of 142 pregnant women working in various industries. The risk of experiencing musculoskeletal system problems was found to increase with impaired sleep quality (OR interval min =1.132 max =1.303). As the amount of work-related physical damage increased, musculoskeletal complaints increased (OR interval min = 1.228 max = 1.527). Environmental hazards and psychosocial hazards seemed to increase the risk of having musculoskeletal problems (OR interval min = 1.209 max = 1.465, and OR interval min = 1.326 max = 1.547, respectively). Physical, psychosocial and workplace environmental hazards seemed to increase the risk of musculoskeletal complaints in pregnancy. It was also seen that as sleep quality decreased, so musculoskeletal complaints increased.Impact StatementWhat is already known about this subject? Occupational hazards and poor sleep quality can be associated with adverse health outcomes. Pregnant women working in different industries in Turkey may also face work-related hazards. They may also experience pregnancy-related sleep problems. In this context, there is a need to identify occupational hazards and problems related to sleep and to provide protective strategies.What do the results of this study add? The most frequent physical hazard was determined to be a simultaneous bending and rolling movement, the most frequent work environment hazard was noise exposure and the most frequent psychosocial hazard was the lack of a reward system. Physical, work environment and psychosocial hazards were observed to increase the risk of musculoskeletal problems. Moreover, the risk of having musculoskeletal problems increased as sleep quality deteriorated.What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? Training should be planned for working women, including the idea of conception and work-related hazards and protective strategies. It may be possible to provide arrangements related to the workplace by including employers in this training.

Abstract
Objective The aim of this study was to investigate prevalence of idiopathic and secondary restless legs syndrome (RLS) according to pregnancy trimester, and its effects on delivery-related outcomes among pregnant women in Japan. Methods This was a single-center, prospective observational study. One hundred eighty-two consecutive pregnant women participated in the study from June 2014 to March 2016. Participants were interviewed and examined in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy and 1 month after delivery. At each term, RLS was identified by a research assistant and then specialist in sleep medicine based on the diagnostic criteria of the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group. Delivery-related data was collected from medical charts. RLS was classified as idiopathic RLS, which originally existed before the index pregnancy, or secondary RLS, which newly appeared during the index pregnancy. Results The prevalence of RLS was 4.9% (idiopathic 3.3%, secondary 1.6%) in the second trimester, 5.0% (idiopathic 0.0%, secondary 5.0%) in the third trimester, and 0.6% (idiopathic 0.0%, secondary 0.6%) after delivery. Prolonged labor, emergency Cesarean section, and arrest of labor tended to be more frequent in idiopathic and/or second RLS (all p<0.05). Conclusions The prevalence of RLS during pregnancy was 4–5% and decreases after delivery in current Japan. The presence of RLS was associated with an increase in some delivery-related outcomes. Early detection and treatment of RLS during pregnancy may be beneficial to safe delivery for pregnant women.

Abstract
Objective/Background: The current study identified heterogeneous trajectories of insomnia symptoms from early pregnancy to early postpartum. The relationship between demographic and psychological predictors of trajectories and associations between trajectory group membership and symptoms of postpartum depression and anxiety were also explored.Participants: 142 pregnant women were enrolled in a prospective online survey.Method: Women were recruited from a maternity clinic in Calgary, AB and completed measures of insomnia symptoms, depression, generalized anxiety, and interpersonal support at four time-points. Women were recruited and completed the first survey before 20 weeks gestation and were reassessed every 10 weeks. Women were on average 15 weeks gestation, 25 weeks gestation, 35 weeks gestation, and 6 weeks postpartum at the respective time-points. Group-based trajectory analysis was used to determine trajectories of pregnancy insomnia symptoms.Results: Three trajectory groups were identified. A no insomnia group (42.3%) in which women reported consistently low insomnia symptoms. A subclinical insomnia group (44.3%) in which women reported subclinical symptoms which briefly elevated to clinical levels in late-pregnancy, and a clinical insomnia group (13.4%) in which women reported consistently elevated insomnia symptoms. Baseline predictors of membership group included anxiety, depression, and ethnicity such that members of the clinical insomnia group were more likely to also endorse anxiety and depression. Membership in the clinical insomnia group was associated with higher postpartum generalized anxiety and depressive symptoms. Additionally, the clinical insomnia group were more likely to experience symptoms indicative of clinically significant depression.Conclusions: A small group of pregnant women experienced consistently high and elevated insomnia symptoms throughout pregnancy and another larger group endorsed consistently elevated but subthreshold symptoms. Future studies should explore long-term consequences of experiencing high insomnia symptomatology during pregnancy and early postpartum, as well as safe and efficacious interventions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between maternal sleep duration (an important health indicator) and neonate birth weight. METHODS The study included 2536 mother-neonate pairs of a Spanish birth cohort (2004-2006, INMA project). The exposures were questionnaire-based measures of sleep duration before and during pregnancy. The primary outcome was neonate birth weight score (g) standardized to 40 weeks of gestation. RESULTS In women sleeping for <7 h/day before pregnancy, each additional hour of sleep increased birth weight score by 44.7 g (P = 0.049) in the minimally adjusted model, although findings were not statistically significant after considering other potential confounders (P > 0.05). However, increasing sleep duration for the group of mothers who slept for more than 9 h/day decreased birth weight score by 39.2 g per additional hour (P = 0.001). Findings were similar after adjusting for several sociodemographic confounders and maternal depression-anxiety clinical history as an intermediate factor. Similar but attenuated associations were observed with sleep duration in the second trimester of pregnancy. CONCLUSION The relationship between maternal sleep duration before and during pregnancy and neonate birth weight is an inverse U-shaped curve. Excessive sleep duration may adversely affect neonate health through its impact on birth weight.

Abstract
Postpartum emotional distress is very common, with 10%-20% of postpartum women reporting depressive or anxiety disorders. Sleep is a modifiable risk factor for emotional distress that has a pivotal role in postpartum adjustment. The present study aimed to examine whether sleep duration and quality during pregnancy predict trajectories of emotional distress in the postpartum period. Participants were 215 women that were assessed from the third trimester of pregnancy to 18-months postpartum. At all five time points (third trimester, 3-, 6-, 12-, and 18-months postpartum), measures of sleep duration and quality (measured by wake time after sleep onset; WASO) were derived from both actiography and diary-based measures. Repeated measures of depression and anxiety symptoms were collected using self-report measures. Results indicated four bivariate postpartum depression and anxiety growth trajectories, including (a) high comorbidity (5.4%); (b) moderate comorbidity (19.4%); (c) low anxiety and decreasing depression symptomology (18.6%); and (d) low symptomology (56.6%). Multinomial logistic regression analyses showed that mothers with shorter sleep durations during pregnancy were more likely to belong to the high comorbidity or moderate symptoms classes compared to the low symptomology class. In addition, mothers with higher WASO (i.e. lower sleep quality) at 3-months postpartum were more likely to belong to the moderate class compared to the low symptomology class. Given the potential negative implications of disrupted sleep in the perinatal period, the present study may inform future intervention studies that target sleep problems during pregnancy.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To examine how changes in physical activity, sitting time and sleep duration through pre-, mid- and late pregnancy are in association with Caesarean section, medically indicated Caesarean section and small for gestational age. BACKGROUND While circadian activities could change throughout pregnancy, studies exploring the effect of change in those activities on pregnancy outcomes remain limited. DESIGN This study applied a prospective panel design. METHODS A self-reported questionnaire was used to assess the three activities before and during pregnancy and was administered three times from August 2015-July 2017. Multiple logistic regression models were used. The analysis included 488, 477 and 455 participants in the models for Caesarean section, medically indicated Caesarean section and small for gestational age, respectively. This study followed the STROBE guidelines. RESULTS The mean age of participants was 32.18 years, and more than half (54.90%) were primiparous. Sleep duration of >8 hr/day before pregnancy and experiencing a decrease in mid-pregnancy was a risk factor for Caesarean section and medically indicated Caesarean section. Sitting ≥8 hr/weekday in pre-, mid- and late pregnancy had a protective effect for Caesarean section and medically indicated Caesarean section. Sitting <8 hr in mid-pregnancy and experiencing a decrease in late pregnancy was a risk factor for small-for-gestational-age infants. Physical activity was not significantly related to pregnancy outcomes. CONCLUSION Sleep duration of 7-8 hr and sitting time of more than 8 hr/day seem beneficial for women both before and during pregnancy. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Health professionals could assess pregnant women or those intending to become pregnant regarding their sleep and sitting behaviour and provide relevant interventions.

Abstract
Background To assess the association of sleep duration and quality with the risk of preterm birth. Methods Relevant studies were retrieved from the PubMed and Web of Science databases up to September 30, 2018. The reference lists of the retrieved articles were reviewed. Random effects models were applied to estimate summarized relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results Ten identified studies (nine cohort studies and one case-controlled study) examined the associations of sleep duration and quality with the risk of preterm birth. As compared with women with the longest sleep duration, the summary RR was 1.23 (95% CI = 1.01–1.50) for women with the shortest sleep duration, with moderate between-study heterogeneity (I2 = 57.4%). Additionally, as compared with women with good sleep quality, the summary RR was 1.54 (95% CI = 1.18–2.01) for women with poor sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index > 5), with high between-study heterogeneity (I2 = 76.7%). Funnel plots as well as the Egger’s and Begg’s tests revealed no evidence of publication bias. Conclusions This systematic review and meta-analysis revealed that short sleep duration and poor sleep quality may be associated with an increased risk of preterm birth. Further subgroup analyses are warranted to test the robustness of these findings as well as to identify potential sources of heterogeneity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Perinatal depression is one of the important mental illnesses among women. However, not enough reviews have been done, and a certain consensus has not been obtained about the prevalence of perinatal depression among Japanese women. The purpose of our study is to reveal the reliable estimates about the prevalence of perinatal depression among Japanese women. METHOD We searched two databases, PubMed and ICHUSHI, to identify studies published from January 1994 to December 2017 with data on the prevalence of antenatal or postnatal depression. Data were extracted from published reports. RESULTS We reviewed 1317 abstracts, retrieved 301 articles and included 123 studies. The point prevalence of postpartum depression at 1 month was 14.3% incorporating 108,431 Japanese women. The period prevalence of depression at pregnancy was 14.0% in the second trimester and 16.3% in the third trimester. The period prevalence of postpartum depression was 15.1% within the first month, 11.6% in 1-3 months, 11.5% in 3-6 months and 11.5% in 6-12 months after birth. We also identified that compared with multiparas, primiparas was significantly associated with a higher prevalence of postpartum depression; the adjusted relative risk was 1.76. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of postpartum depression at 1 month after childbirth was found to be 14.3% among Japanese women. During pregnancy, the prevalence of depression increases as childbirth approaches, and the prevalence of depression was found to decrease in the postpartum period over time. In addition, we found that the prevalence of postpartum depression in primiparas was higher than that in multiparas. Hence, we suggest that healthcare professionals need to pay more attention to primiparas than multiparas regarding postpartum depression.

Abstract
Objective/Background: Poor sleep during pregnancy is common and is associated with pregnancy complications. Physical activity (PA) is associated with better sleep in nonpregnant populations. However, studies among pregnant women are sparse, conflicting, and none have been conducted among Hispanic women, who face a disproportionate burden of poor sleep and pregnancy complications. Therefore, our objective was to examine the relationship between intensity- and domain-specific PA, respectively, on sleep quality and duration among Hispanic pregnant women. Participants: We evaluated these associations among participants (n = 251) in Estudio PARTO, an ongoing randomized controlled trial aimed at reducing type 2 diabetes among women at high risk. Methods: We assessed the cross-sectional relationship between PA (via Pregnancy PA Questionnaire) and sleep quality and duration (via Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index) using baseline data (26.5 ± 6.9 weeks gestation). Results: In multivariable logistic models, household and caregiving activities were associated with higher odds of very poor sleep quality (OR = 2.69; 95% CI = 1.04 to 7.04) and with short (vs. medium) sleep duration (OR = 2.85; 95% CI = 1.07 to 7.56). In contrast, occupational PA was associated with lower odds of very poor sleep quality (OR = 0.39; 95% CI = 0.17 to 0.89). Light-intensity PA was associated with lower odds of long (vs. medium) sleep duration (OR = 0.13; 95% CI = 0.03 to 0.52). There were no statistically significant relationships between PA in any other domain and sleep. Conclusions: Prospective studies will be critical in evaluating the potential adverse impact of household and caregiving activities on poor sleep quality.

Abstract
Background Sleep disruptions are common during pregnancy and associated with increased risk of adverse maternal outcomes such as preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, prolonged labor, and cesarean birth. Given the morbidity associated with poor sleep, cost-effective approaches to improving sleep that can be disseminated in community or clinical settings are needed. Personal health monitor (PHM) devices offer an opportunity to promote behavior change, but their acceptability and efficacy at improving sleep in pregnant women are unknown. Objective The goal of the paper is to describe the protocol for an ongoing pilot randomized controlled trial that aims to establish the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of using a PHM device (Shine 2, Misfit) to promote sleep during pregnancy. Methods The proposed pilot study is a 12-week, parallel arm, randomized controlled trial. Pregnant women, at 24 weeks gestation, will be randomized at a 1:1 ratio to a 12-week sleep education plus PHM device group or a sleep education alone comparison group. The primary outcomes will be measures of feasibility (ie, recruitment, enrollment, adherence) and acceptability (ie, participant satisfaction). The secondary outcomes will be self-reported sleep quality and duration, excessive daytime sleepiness, fatigue, and depressive symptoms. Results Recruitment for this study began in September 2017 and ended in March 2018. Data collection for the primary and secondary aims was completed in August 2018. We anticipate that the data analysis for primary and secondary aims will be completed by December 2019. The results from this trial will inform the development of a larger National Institutes of Health grant application to test the efficacy of an enhanced version of the sleep intervention that we plan to submit in the year 2020. Conclusions This study will be the first to apply a PHM device as a tool for promoting self-management of sleep among pregnant women. PHM devices have the potential to facilitate behavioral interventions because they include theory-driven, self-regulatory techniques such as behavioral self-monitoring. The results of the study will inform the development of a sleep health intervention for pregnant women. Abstract
Anatomical, physiological, psychological and hormonal alterations affect sleep during pregnancy. Sleep appears tobe commonly impaired only after the first trimester. Albeit objective data regarding the reduction of sleep durationand efficiency are not univocal, poor sleep is reported by over half of pregnant women. The reasons underlyingthese complaints are multiple, including lower back pain, gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD), increasedmicturition and repositioning difficulties at night. Specific primary sleep disorders whose prevalence drasticallyincreases during pregnancy include obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and restless legs syndrome (RLS), both relatedto gestational hypertension and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Pre-eclampsia and labor complicationsleading to an increased number of cesarean sections and preterm births correlate with insomnia and OSA inparticular. Post-partum depression (PPD) and impairment of the mother-infant relationship may also be consideredas secondary effects deriving from poor sleep during pregnancy. Recognition and treatment of sleep disordersshould be encouraged in order to protect maternal and fetal health and prevent dire consequences at birth.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To characterize sleep patterns among pregnant women undergoing prolonged antepartum hospitalization. STUDY DESIGN We conducted a prospective cohort study of women undergoing prolonged antepartum hospitalization after 20 weeks' gestation. Women were recruited to wear an Actigraph, complete a sleep log for 7 consecutive days, and complete a sleep survey at the end of the study period. Actigraphy was used to determine rest and sleep intervals, sleep onset latency, and wake time after sleep onset. RESULTS A total of 40 participants were recruited, and 28 had ≥ 5 nights of data for a total of 177 nights of antepartum sleep data. Mean gestational age was 30 weeks. Median sleep duration was 7.05 h ± 1.71 h. In all, 43.5% of women had an average sleep duration of <7 h per night. In all, 28.2% of the study nights had a bedtime between midnight and 5 am. Going to bed between midnight and 5 am was significantly associated with sleep durations of <7 h (70.7 vs. 32.5%, p < .001). Participants reported an average of 2.4 awakenings per night due to hospital-related events. CONCLUSIONS Prolonged antepartum hospitalization has a negative impact on sleep duration and quality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exploring patterns of childhood wheeze may help to clarify the etiology and prognosis of respiratory diseases. The purpose of this study was to classify phenotypes of wheezing in children up to 9 years of age in Japan and to evaluate the individual and environmental risk factors for these phenotypes. METHODS Wheeze was evaluated at approximately 1-year intervals based on the mothers' recollection of their child's wheezing or whistling in the chest during the preceding 12 months. The children were aged 1-9 years. In total, 1116 children who had at least five measures of wheezing at all nine time points were used for identifying trajectories. Trajectories were identified with group-based trajectory analysis. A multinomial logit model was built to evaluate the relationships between phenotypes and risk factors. RESULTS Five typical trajectories were identified. The probability of group membership was 43.7%, 32.2%, 6.2%, 8.6%, and 9.2% for the never/infrequent wheeze, transient early wheeze, school-age-onset wheeze, early-childhood-onset remitting wheeze, and persistent wheeze trajectories, respectively. Infant tobacco exposure increased the odds of membership in the transient early wheeze trajectory compared to the never/infrequent wheeze trajectory. CONCLUSIONS Using the group-based trajectory modeling approach, we identified five trajectories of childhood wheeze development in a Japanese population. The trajectories shown here are based on formal statistical modeling rather than on subjective classification, and an assessment of its precision suggested that the model has high assignment accuracy.

Abstract
PURPOSE To examine the association between snoring, sleep quality, quantity, and blood pressure in third-trimester normotensive pregnant women. DESIGN This study was a cross-sectional analysis of two cohorts of healthy pregnant women recruited from a prenatal clinic in a medical center in Northern Taiwan. METHODS A total of 322 women reported sociodemographic and health characteristics in a structured interview and wore a wrist actigraph on their nondominant wrist for 7 consecutive days to assess objective sleep patterns. The women's resting blood pressures were measured while seated in the clinic by trained personnel using an electronic sphygmomanometer. FINDINGS One hundred thirty-three (41.3%) women reported snoring. Ninety-three women (28.9%) had <6 hr of nighttime sleep, with only 95 (29.5%) women averaging 7 or more hours of nighttime sleep. In the univariate analyses, snoring was positively associated with systolic and diastolic blood pressure as well as mean arterial pressure levels (p < .05). In the multivariate analyses, snoring remained as a significant predictor of higher diastolic blood pressure (β = 2.07, p < .05) and mean arterial pressure levels (β = 2.00, p < .05), after adjustment for age, parity, gestational age, body mass index before pregnancy, and sleep quantity and quality by actigraphy. CONCLUSIONS Snoring is a highly prevalent condition experienced by healthy third-trimester pregnant women and is associated with elevated blood pressure. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Clinical assessment and screening of snoring are of utmost importance in obstetric nursing practice to potentially prevent or reduce the associated adverse cardiovascular consequences in women during pregnancy.

There are many ways in which women experience sleep differently from men. Women contending with distinct sleep challenges respond differently to sleep disorders, as well as sleep deprivation and deficiency, and face particular health outcomes as a result of poor sleep. Idiosyncrasies, including changes that occur with the biological life cycles of menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause, make the understanding of sleep in women an important topic to study. Each phase of a woman's life, from childhood to menopause, increases the risk of sleep disturbance in unique ways that may require distinct management. Indeed, new research is unraveling novel aspects of sleep pathology in women and the fundamental role that sex hormones play in influencing sleep regulation and arousals and possibly outcomes of sleep conditions. Moreover, studies indicate that during times of hormonal change, women are at an increased risk for sleep disturbances such as poor sleep quality and sleep deprivation, as well as sleep disorders such as OSA, restless legs syndrome, and insomnia. This article reviews sleep changes in female subjects from neonatal life to menopause.

Abstract
Pregnant women are more likely to be affected by restless legs syndrome (RLS) than the general population. Restless legs syndrome during pregnancy is associated with adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. Currently unknown is the worldwide and regional prevalence of RLS in pregnant women. We performed a meta-analysis to provide a full profile of the prevalence of RLS during pregnancy. A systematic search of the PubMed, Medline, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases was performed to identify studies that were published up to April 2017, followed by random-effects meta-analyses. A total of 196 articles were identified, among which 27 longitudinal and cross-sectional observational studies with 51,717 pregnant subjects were included in the analysis. The pooled overall prevalence of RLS across all three trimesters was 21%. According to the regional classification of the World health organization, the prevalence of RLS during pregnancy in the European Region, Western Pacific Region, Eastern Mediterranean Region, and Region of the Americas was 22%, 14%, 30%, and 20%, respectively. The regional prevalence in the African Region and South-East Asia Region was not assessed because of insufficient data. We also analyzed the prevalence of RLS in the first, second, and third trimesters of pregnancy, and the rates of RLS were 8%, 16%, and 22%, respectively. We also found that the high prevalence of RLS decreased to 4% after delivery. No publication bias was found in these analyses. The findings emphasize the high occurrence of RLS during pregnancy. Future studies should examine the effects of RLS during pregnancy on maternal and fetal outcomes.
