Phytochemicals from fern species: potential for medicine applications

Insights into Chemical Diversity and Potential Health-Promoting Effects of Ferns

The scientific community is focusing on how to enhance human health and immunity through functional foods, and dietary supplements are proven to have a positive as well as a protective effect against infectious and chronic diseases. Ferns act as a taxonomical linkage between higher and lower plants and are endowed with a wide chemical diversity not subjected to sufficient scrutinization before. Even though a wealth of traditional medicinal fern uses were recorded in Chinese medicine, robust phytochemical and biological investigations of these plants are lacking. Herein, an extensive search was conducted using the keywords ferns and compounds, ferns and NMR, ferns and toxicity, and the terms ferns and chemistry, lignans, Polypodiaceae, NMR, isolation, bioactive compounds, terpenes, phenolics, phloroglucinols, monoterpenes, alkaloids, phenolics, and fatty acids were utilized with the Boolean operators AND, OR, and NOT. Databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Reaxys were utilized to reveal a wealth of information regarding fern chemistry and their health-promoting effects. Terpenes followed by phenolics represented the largest number of isolated active compounds. Regarding the neuroprotective effects, Psilotium, Polypodium, and Dryopteris species possessed as their major phenolics component unique chemical moieties including catechins, procyanidins, and bioflavonoids. In this updated chemical review, the pharmacological and chemical aspects of ferns are compiled manifesting their chemical diversity in the last seven years (2017-2024) together with a special focus on their nutritive and potential health-promoting effects.

ent-8(14),15-Pimaradiene-2β,19-diol, a diterpene from Aleuritopteris albofusca, inhibits growth and induces protective autophagy in hepatocellular carcinoma cells

A new pimarane-type diterpene, ent-8(14),15-pimaradiene-2β,19-diol (JXE-23), was isolated from the fern plant Aleuritopteris albofusca by our previous work; however, the biological activity of this diterpene remains unclear. In the present study, the anti-cancer potential of JXE-23 in various cancer cells was investigated. Among MCF-7 breast cancer cells, A549 lung cancer cells, and HepG2 liver cancer cells, JXE-23 displayed significant cytotoxicity to HepG2 cells with an IC50 value of 17.20 ± 1.73 µM, while showing no obvious toxicity in normal hepatocytes HL7702. JXE-23 inhibited cell growth and colony formation in HepG2 cells. A cell cycle distribution analysis showed that JXE-23 caused G2/M cell cycle arrest. Besides, JXE-23 also suppressed the migration of HepG2 cells. Interestingly, an increase of light chain 3 II (LC3II) and Beclin 1 and a decrease of P62 have occurred in JXE-23-treated cells, as well as the formation of GFP-LC3 dots, indicative of autophagy induction by JXE-23. When combined with autophagy inhibitor 3-methyladenine and chloroquine, the cell viability was significantly reduced, suggesting that JXE-23 triggered protective autophagy in hepatoma cells. Further study showed that JXE-23 inactivated the CIP2A/p-AKT/c-Myc signaling axis in HepG2 cells. Our data provided evidence that JXE-23 inhibited cell growth, arrested cells at the G2/M phase, and induced protective autophagy in HepG2 hepatocellular carcinoma cells. JXE-23 may be a potential lead compound for anti-cancer drug development, and autophagy inhibitor treatment may provide an effective strategy for improving its anti-cancer effect.

Transcriptomics and metabolomics analyses provide insights into resistance genes of tree ferns

As ancient organisms, tree ferns play a crucial role as an evolutionary bridge between lower and higher plant species, providing various utilitarian benefits. However, they face challenges such as overexploitation, climate change, adverse environmental conditions, and insect pests, resulting in conservation concerns. In this study, we provide an overview of metabolic and transcriptomic resources of leaves in two typical tree ferns, A. spinulosa and A. metteniana, and explore the resistance genes for the first time. The landscape of metabolome showed that the compound skimmin may hold medicinal significance. A total of 111 differentially accumulated metabolites (DAMs) were detected, with pathway enrichment analysis highlighting 14 significantly enriched pathways, including 2-oxocarboxylic acid metabolism possibly associated with environmental adaptations. A total of 14,639 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were found, among which 606 were resistance (R) genes. We identified BAM1 as a significantly differentially expressed R gene, which is one of the core genes within the R gene interaction network. Both the maximum-likelihood phylogenetic tree and the PPI network revealed a close relationship between BAM1, FLS2, and TMK. Moreover, BAM1 showed a significant positive correlation with neochlorogenic acid and kaempferol-7-O-glucoside. These metabolites, known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, likely play a crucial role in the defense response of tree ferns. This research provides valuable insights into the metabolic and transcriptomic differences between A. spinulosa and A. metteniana, enhancing our understanding of resistance genes in tree ferns.

Antibacterial, Trichomonacidal, and Cytotoxic Activities of Pleopeltis crassinervata Extracts

Pleopeltis crassinervata is a fern documented in ethnobotanical records for its use in Mexican traditional medicine to treat gastric disorders and mouth ulcers. Consequently, conducting biological and pharmacological assays is crucial to validate the therapeutic efficacy of this plant within the context of traditional medicine. In the present study, we investigated the biological activity of extracts and fractions obtained from P. crassinervata organs against bacteria (Salmonella typhimurium, Salmonella typhi, Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus mirabilis, Shigella flexneri, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli) and Trichomonas vaginalis using in vitro models. The precipitate fraction obtained from the frond methanolic extract showed significant antibacterial activity (minimal inhibitory concentration [MIC] 120 µg/mL) against the Staphylococcus aureus strain and was effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The hexane fraction also obtained from frond methanolic extract, showed a trichomonacidal effect with an IC50 of 82.8 μg/mL and a low cytotoxic effect. Hsf6 exhibited the highest activity against T. vaginalis, and the GC-MS analysis revealed that the predominant compound was 16-pregnenolone. The remaining identified compounds were primarily terpene-type compounds.

The traditional utilization, biological activity and chemical composition of edible fern species

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE

Ferns form an important part of the human diet. Young fern fiddleheads are mostly consumed as vegetables, while the rhizomes are often extracted for starch. These edible ferns are also often employed in traditional medicine, where all parts of the plant are used, mostly to prepare extracts. These extracts are applied either externally as lotions and baths or internally as potions, decoctions and teas. Ailments traditionally treated with ferns include coughs, colds, fevers, pain, burns and wounds, asthma, rheumatism, diarrhoea, or skin diseases (eczema, rashes, itching, leprosy).

AIM OF THE REVIEW

This review aims to compile the worldwide knowledge on the traditional medicinal uses of edible fern species correlating to reported biological activities and isolated bioactive compounds.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The articles and books published on edible fern species were searched through the online databases Web of Science, Pubmed and Google Scholar, with critical evaluation of the hits. The time period up to the end of 2022 was included.

RESULTS

First, the edible fern species were identified based on the literature data. A total of 90 fern species were identified that are eaten around the world and are also used in traditional medicine. Ailments treated are often associated with inflammation or bacterial infection. However, only the most common and well-known fern species, were investigated for their biological activity. The most studied species are Blechnum orientale L., Cibotium barometz (L.) J. Sm., Diplazium esculentum (Retz.) Sw., Marsilea minuta L., Osmunda japonica Thunb., Polypodium vulgare L., and Stenochlaena palustris (Burm.) Bedd. Most of the fern extracts have been studied for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities. Not surprisingly, antioxidant capacity has been the most studied, with results reported for 28 edible fern species. Ferns have been found to be very rich sources of flavonoids, polyphenols, polyunsaturated fatty acids, carotenoids, terpenoids and steroids and most of these compounds are remarkable free radical scavengers responsible for the outstanding antioxidant capacity of fern extracts. As far as clinical trials are concerned, extracts from only three edible fern species have been evaluated.

CONCLUSIONS

The extracts of edible fern species exert antioxidant anti-inflammatory and related biological activities, which is consistent with their traditional medicinal use in the treatment of wounds, burns, colds, coughs, skin diseases and intestinal diseases. However, studies to prove pharmacological activities are scarce, and require chemical-biological standardization. Furthermore, correct botanical classification needs to be included in publications to simplify data acquisition. Finally, more in-depth phytochemical studies, allowing the linking of traditional use to pharmacological relevance are needed to be done in a standardized way.

Inhibitory effect of food-functioned phytochemicals on dysregulated inflammatory pathways triggered by SARS-CoV-2: a mechanistic review

Inflammatory cascades of the dysregulated inflammatory pathways in COVID-19 can cause excessive production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines leading to cytokine storm syndrome (CSS). The molecular cascades involved in the pathways may be targeted for discovery of new anti-inflammatory agents. Many plant extracts have been used clinically in the management of COVID-19, however, their immunosuppressive activities were mainly investigated based on in silico activity. Dietary flavonoids of the extracts such as quercetin, luteolin, kaempferol, naringenin, isorhamnetin, baicalein, wogonin, and rutin were commonly identified as responsible for their inhibitory effects. The present review critically analyzes the anti-inflammatory effects and mechanisms of phytochemicals, including dietary compounds against cytokine storm (CS) and hyperinflammation via inhibition of the altered inflammatory pathways triggered by SARS-CoV-2, published since the emergence of COVID-19 in December 2019. Only a few phytochemicals, mainly dietary compounds such as nanocurcumin, melatonin, quercetin, 6-shagoal, kaempferol, resveratrol, andrographolide, and colchicine have been investigated either in in silico or preliminary clinical studies to evaluate their anti-inflammatory effects against COVID-19. Sufficient pre-clinical studies on safety and efficacy of anti-inflammatory effects of the phytochemicals must be performed prior to proper clinical studies to develop them into therapeutic adjuvants in the prevention and treatmemt of COVID-19 symptoms.

Discovery of a Pimaradiene that Decreases Viability of MDA-MB-468 Cells Through Inhibition of EGFR Signaling Pathway

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is characterized by strong invasiveness, high relapse rates, and poor overall survival. It occurs in approximately 15-20 % of all breast cancer cases. Natural compounds are a promising option for managing breast cancer. ent-8(14),15-Pimaradiene-2β,19-diol (JXE-23), is a pimaradiene isolated from the fern Aleuritopteris albofusca. However, the effects and molecular mechanisms of JXE-23 on cancer cells are still unknown. Thus, this study was designed to determine the potential of JXE-23 for its anticancer properties in TNBC cells. JXE-23 was evaluated for its antiproliferative activity in vitro against human breast cancer cell lines, and showed selectively cytotoxic activity against MDA-MB-468, an EGFR-overexpressing TNBC cancer cell line, with an IC50 value of 1.17±0.04 μM. Moreover, mechanistic investigations indicated that JXE-23 was significantly capable of inhibiting cell proliferation and viability in MDA-MB-468 cells. In addition, JXE-23 exerted an anticancer effect against MDA-MB-468 cells via restraining cell migration in a dose-dependent mode. Moreover, after treatment with JXE-23, the protein expressions of pEGFR, pERK, pAkt and p-p70S6K were significantly reduced in MDA-MB-468 cells. The results underscored that JXE-23 could be a potential lead compound for the treatment of EGFR-overexpressing TNBC cells.

Evaluation of Biological Potency of two Endemic Species Integrated with in vitro and in silico Approches: LC-MS/MS Analysis of the Plants

In the present study, the main phytochemical components of endemic plant extracts and inhibitory potency were screened related to different biological activities. Seven compounds were quantified, and cyanidin-3-o-glucoside was the dominant secondary metabolite in the extract of plants. The extract from P. asiae-minoris (PAM) exhibited the best enzyme inhibitory activity against BChE (1.73±0.23 μg mL-1 ), tyrosinase (2.47±0.28 μg mL-1 ), α-glucosidase (5.28±0.66 μg mL-1 ), AChE (8.66±0.86 μg mL-1 ), and ACE (19.27±1.02 μg mL-1 ). In vitro antioxidant assay, PAM extract possessed the highest activity in respect of DPPH radical scavenging (24.29±0.23 μg/mL), ABTS⋅+ scavenging (13.50±0.27 μg/mL) and FRAP reducing power (1.56±0.01 μmol TE/g extract). MIC values ranged from 1-8 mg/mL for antibacterial ability, and the PAM extract showed a stronger effect for B. subtilis, E. faecalis, and E. coli at 1 mg/mL. The antiproliferative ability of A. bartinense (AB) extract demonstrated a suppressive effect (IC50 : 70.26 μg/mL) for pancreatic cancer cell lines. According to the affinity scores analysis, the cyanidin-3-o-glucoside demonstrated the lowest docking scores against ACE, AChE, BChE, and collagenase. It was found that the PAM extract exhibited better inhibitory capabilities than A. bartinense. The P. asiae-minoris plant, reported to be in the Critically Endangered (CR) category, should be conserved by culturing, considering its biological abilities.

Cytotoxic Natural Products Isolated from Cryptogramma crispa (L.) R. Br

Parsley fern, Cryptogramma crispa, is a common fern in arctic-alpine regions, and even though this species has been known since ancient times and has been presumed to cause the poisoning of horses, its natural products have not previously been investigated. Here, we characterise 15 natural products isolated from the aerial parts of Cryptogramma crispa, including the previously undescribed compound 3-malonyl pteroside D. The structure determinations were based on several advanced 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic techniques, Circular Dichroism spectroscopy and high-resolution mass spectrometry. The pteroside derivatives exhibited selective moderate cytotoxic activity against the acute myeloid leukaemia MOLM13 cell line and no cytotoxicity against the normal heart and kidney cell lines, suggesting that their potential anticancer effect should be further investigated.

Non-seed plants are emerging gene sources for agriculture and insect control proteins

The non-seed plants (e.g., charophyte algae, bryophytes, and ferns) have multiple human uses, but their contributions to agriculture and research have lagged behind seed plants. While sharing broadly conserved biology with seed plants and the major crops, non-seed plants sometimes possess alternative molecular and physiological adaptations. These adaptations may guide crop improvements. One such area is the presence of multiple classes of insecticidal proteins found in non-seed plant genomes which are either absent or widely diverged in seed plants. There are documented uses of non-seed plants, and ferns for example have been used in human diets. Among the occasional identifiable toxins or antinutritive components present in non-seed plants, none include these insecticidal proteins. Apart from these discrete risk factors which can be addressed in the safety assessment, there should be no general safety concern about sourcing genes from non-seed plant species.

Functional characterization of triterpene synthases in Cibotium barometz

Cibotium barometz (Linn.) J. Sm., a tree fern in the Dicksoniaceae family, is an economically important industrial exported plant in China and widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. C. barometz produces a range of bioactive triterpenes and their metabolites. However, the biosynthetic pathway of triterpenes in C. barometz remains unknown. To clarify the origin of diverse triterpenes in C. barometz, we conducted de novo transcriptome sequencing and analysis of C. barometz rhizomes and leaves to identify the candidate genes involved in C. barometz triterpene biosynthesis. Three C. barometz triterpene synthases (CbTSs) candidate genes were obtained. All of them were highly expressed in C. barometz rhizomes, consisting of the accumulation pattern of triterpenes in C. barometz. To characterize the function of these CbTSs, we constructed a squalene- and oxidosqualene-overproducing yeast chassis by overexpressing all the enzymes in the MVA pathway under the control of GAL-regulated promoter and disrupted the GAL80 gene in Saccharomyces cerevisiae simultaneously. Heterologous expressing CbTS1, CbTS2, and CbTS3 in engineering yeast strain produced cycloartenol, dammaradiene, and diploptene, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that CbTS1 belongs to oxidosqualene cyclase, while CbTS2 and CbTS3 belong to squalene cyclase. These results decipher enzymatic mechanisms underlying the origin of diverse triterpene in C. barometz.

Flavonoids as Promising Natural Compounds in the Prevention and Treatment of Selected Skin Diseases

Phytochemicals represent a large and diverse group of naturally occurring compounds, bioactive nutrients, or phytonutrients produced by plants, widely found in fruits, vegetables, whole grains products, legumes, beans, herbs, seeds, nuts, tea, and dark chocolate. They are classified according to their chemical structures and functional properties. Flavonoids belong to the phenolic class of phytochemicals with potential solid pharmacological effects as modulators of multiple signal transduction pathways. Their beneficial effect on the human body is associated with their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimutagenic, and anticarcinogenic properties. Flavonoids are also widely used in various nutritional, pharmaceutical, medical, and cosmetic applications. In our review, we discuss the positive effect of flavonoids on chronic skin diseases such as vitiligo, psoriasis, acne, and atopic dermatitis.

Phytochemical Characterization and In Vitro and In Silico Biological Studies from Ferns of Genus Blechnum (Blechnaceae, Polypodiales)

The genus Blechnum represents one of the most ecologically and therapeutically important groups of ferns that grow in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions. In this work, the chemical fingerprint of lyophilized extracts of Blechnum chilense, B. hastatum, B. magellanicum and B. penna-marina species, the determination of their antioxidant activity through ORAC, FRAP and DPPH assays and inhibition of cholinesterase enzymes (AChE and BChE), and an in silico analysis of selected majority compounds on cholinesterase enzymes were identified. Nineteen compounds were recorded for B. chilense, nine in B. hastatum, seventeen in B. magellanicum and seventeen in B. penna-marina by liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS). The content of phenolic compounds, flavonoids, antioxidant activity and enzyme inhibition were variable among species, with best results for B. penna-marina. Molecular docking evidenced low toxicities, significant pharmacokinetic properties, and significant binding affinities of the tested compounds for the AChE and BChE enzymes. These fern species show high diversity of bioactive compounds and represent a promising resource in phytotherapy, especially for their optimal levels of phenolic compounds that support their antioxidant activity.

Elucidating Flavonoid and Antioxidant Activity in Edible and Medicinal Herbs Woodwardia japonica (L.f.) Sm. Based on HPLC-ESI-TOF-MS and Artificial Neural Network Model: Response to Climatic Factors

Woodwardia japonica is a kind of great potential edible and medicinal fern. In a previous study, it was found that flavonoid and antioxidant activity of W. japonica from different sites were different. However, the cause of the differences has still been unclear, which has restricted the utilization of W. japonica. In this paper, flavonoid and antioxidant activity of W. japonica from nine different regions were determined with the method of a colorimetric assay with UV-VIS spectrophotometry and HPLC-ESI-TOF-MS, and the effects of climate factors on flavonoids and antioxidant activities were evaluated by mathematical modeling and statistical methods. The results showed: (1) total flavonoid content (TFC) of W. japonica from Wuyi Mountain (Jiangxi) was the highest, which might be related to the low temperature; (2) the differences of antioxidant activities of W. japonica might be related to precipitation; (3) five flavonols, two flavones and one isoflavone were tentatively identified in W. japonica; (4) flavonol and isoflavone might be affected by sunshine duration, and flavones were probably related to temperature. In conclusion, the effects of climate factors on flavonoids and antioxidants are significant, which would provide an important basis for further exploring the mechanism of climate affecting secondary metabolites.

Ionomics and metabolomics analysis reveal the molecular mechanism of metal tolerance of Pteris vittata L. dominating in a mining site in Thai Nguyen province, Vietnam

This study aims to find the interaction between ionome and metabolome profiles of Pteris vittata L., an arsenic hyperaccumulator plant, to reveal its metal tolerance mechanism. Therefore, at the Pb-Zn mining sites located in Thai Nguyen province, Vietnam, where these species dominate, soil and plant samples were collected. Their multi-element compositions were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and thus referred to as the "ionomics" approach. In parallel, the widely targeted metabolomics profiles of these plant samples were performed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-QqQ-MS). Nineteen elements, including both metals and nonmetals, were detected and quantified in both tissues of thirty-five plant individuals. A comparison of these elements' levels in two tissues showed that above-ground parts accumulated more As and inorganic P, whereas Zn, Pb, and Sb were raised mostly in the under-ground samples. The partial least squares regression (PLSR) model predicting the level of each element by the whole metabolome indicated that the enhancement of flavonoids content plays an essential contribution in adaptation with the higher levels of Pb, Ag, and Ni accumulated in the aerial part, and Mn, Pb in subterranean part. Moreover, the models also highlighted the effect of Mn and Pb on the metabolic induction of adenosine derivatives in subterranean parts. At the same time, the model presented the most contribution of As to the metabolisms of the amino acids of this tissue. On those accounts, the developed integration approach linking the ionomics and metabolomics data of P. vittata improved the understanding of the molecular mechanism of hyperaccumulation characteristics and provided markers that could be targeted in future investigations.

Free Radical Scavenging, Anti-Infectious, and Toxicity Activities from Stenochlaena palustris (Burm.f.) Bedd. Extracts

Stenochlaena palustris (Burm.f.) Bedd. (Blechnaceae) or Kelakai is a traditional medicinal plant found in the Indonesian islands of Borneo and Sumatra. It has been used to treat wound healing, infection, and diabetes. This study looked into the free radical scavenging activity, antiplasmodial activity, toxicity, and antibacterial activity against pathogenic bacteria. The species' aerial part was extracted with methanol, followed by a liquid-liquid extraction against (n-hexane, dichloromethane, and ethyl acetate). The extracts' free radical scavenging activities were determined using DPPH and NO radicals. The antiplasmodial and toxicity assays were conducted using two Plasmodium falciparum strains (3D7 and W2) and the brine shrimp lethality test. In addition, antibacterial activity was determined using the well diffusion method. The results revealed that ethyl acetate depicted potential activities toward the assay. The ethyl acetate showed potential free radical scavenging activities with an IC₅₀ value of 51.63 ± 0.46 μg/mL (DPPH) and 60.03 ± 0.65 μg/mL (NO). The antiplasmodial activities showed that the ethyl acetate had potential activities among the extracts with an IC₅₀ value of 11.06 ± 0.45 μg/mL. However, all the extracts demonstrated nontoxic toward Artemia salina with LC₅₀ > 1000 μg/mL. Furthermore, the ethyl acetate demonstrated intermediate susceptibility against B. cereus ATCC 10876, V. parahaemolyticus ATCC 17802, L. monocytogenes ATCC 7644, and S. Typhimurium ATCC 14028 at a concentration of 500 μg/disc. According to these findings, the ethyl acetate extract of S. palustris (Burm.f.) Bedd is a promising source of natural antioxidants and antiplasmodial agents.

The Metabolite Content of the Post-Culture Medium of the Tree Fern Cyathea delgadii Sternb. Cell Suspension Cultured in the Presence of 2,4-D and BAP

The aim of this study was to demonstrate the metabolic profile of post-culture medium as an expression of cell suspension metabolic activity of the tree fern Cyathea delgadii Sternb. The molecular profile of the tree fern’s cell culture has been never described, according to our knowledge. The cell suspension was established using ½ MS medium supplemented with various concentrations of 2,4-D and BAP. The optimal concentrations were 2.0 mg·L−1 and 0.2 mg·L−1, respectively. The cell suspension initially showed an organized system of cell division and later unorganized cell proliferation. LC-MS and GC-MS were used to identify the chemical composition of the post-culture medium. The LC-MS analysis results suggested that the color of liquid medium could be due to the presence of flavonoid derivatives, as this group of compounds was represented by eight compounds. After GC-MS analysis based on retention indexes and thanks to mass spectra comparison, 130 natural products were recognized, belonging to various classes of primary and secondary metabolites.

Exploring wild Aspleniaceae ferns as safety sources of polyphenols: The case of Asplenium trichomanes L. and Ceterach officinarum Willd

The forest ecosystem is a source of material resources used since ancient times by mankind. Ferns are part of different oriental systems of traditional medicine due to the phytochemical variety of their fronds, which have allowed their traditional use to be validated through ethnopharmacological studies. In Europe, different cultures have used the same fern with a wide variety of applications due to its presence in most European forests. In recent years, studies on the phytocharacterization and biological activity of the fronds of the main European ferns have been published. In this study, the presence of polyphenolic phytochemicals has been evaluated by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) in the fronds of two wild ferns together with in vitro activities in non-tumoral and human tumoral cell lines. The polyphenols were extracted from Asplenium trichomanes L. and Ceterach officinarum Willd. by cold maceration using methanol. The main phytochemicals of polyphenolic origin in the extracts of A. trichomanes and C. officinarum determined by HPLC-MS/MS were the flavonol hyperoside and the phenolic acid chlorogenic acid, respectively. This different polyphenolic nature of both extracts contributes to the divergence of the behavior experienced in the biological activities tested, but none of the extracts showed a cytotoxic or phototoxic profile in the different tested cell lines. However, the cytoprotective values in front of the H₂O₂ oxidative stress induced in the 3T3 and HaCaT cell lines position these extracts as possible candidates for future health applications.

Dynamic genome evolution in a model fern

The large size and complexity of most fern genomes have hampered efforts to elucidate fundamental aspects of fern biology and land plant evolution through genome-enabled research. Here we present a chromosomal genome assembly and associated methylome, transcriptome and metabolome analyses for the model fern species Ceratopteris richardii. The assembly reveals a history of remarkably dynamic genome evolution including rapid changes in genome content and structure following the most recent whole-genome duplication approximately 60 million years ago. These changes include massive gene loss, rampant tandem duplications and multiple horizontal gene transfers from bacteria, contributing to the diversification of defence-related gene families. The insertion of transposable elements into introns has led to the large size of the Ceratopteris genome and to exceptionally long genes relative to other plants. Gene family analyses indicate that genes directing seed development were co-opted from those controlling the development of fern sporangia, providing insights into seed plant evolution. Our findings and annotated genome assembly extend the utility of Ceratopteris as a model for investigating and teaching plant biology.

Chemistry and Bioactivity of Microsorum scolopendria (Polypodiaceae): Antioxidant Effects on an Epithelial Damage Model

Microsorum scolopendia (MS), which grows on the Chilean island of Rapa Nui, is a medicinal fern used to treat several diseases. Despite being widely used, this fern has not been deeply investigated. The aim of this study was to perform a characterization of the polyphenolic and flavonoid identity, radical scavenging, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties of MS rhizome and leaf extracts (RAE and HAE). The compound identity was analyzed through the reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) method coupled with mass spectrometry. The radical scavenging and anti-inflammatory activities were evaluated for DPPH, ORAC, ROS formation, and COX inhibition activity assay. The antimicrobial properties were evaluated using an infection model on Human Dermal Fibroblast adult (HDFa) cell lines incubated with Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. The most abundant compounds were phenolic acids between 46% to 57% in rhizome and leaf extracts, respectively; followed by flavonoids such as protocatechic acid 4-O-glucoside, cirsimaritin, and isoxanthohumol, among others. MS extract inhibited and disaggregated the biofilm bacterial formed and showed an anti-inflammatory selective property against COX-2 enzyme. RAE generated a 64% reduction of ROS formation in the presence of S. aureus and 87.35% less ROS in the presence of S. epidermidis on HDFa cells. MS has great therapeutic potential and possesses several biological properties that should be evaluated.

Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Activity of Filipendula glaberrima Nakai Ethanolic Extract and Its Chemical Composition

Many countries are endeavoring to strengthen the competitiveness of their biological resources by exploring and developing wild endemic plants. This study examined the effects of Filipendula glaberrima Nakai (FG) on the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity using an in vitro system. The bioactive components were also examined using chromatographic techniques. The ethanol extract of Filipendula glaberrima Nakai (FGE) exerted antioxidant activities in the radical scavenging and reducing power assays and had high amounts of total polyphenolic compounds. The qRT-PCR results suggested that FGE significantly downregulated the levels cyclooxygenase (COX)-2, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) 2, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and interleukin (IL)-6 in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. The FGE treatment also decreased the production of nitric oxide, TNF-α, and IL-6 significantly in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, FGE downregulated phosphorylation of MAPK and NF-κB signaling pathway-related proteins. The chromatographic and mass spectrometry results showed that FGE contained bioactive flavonoids such as (+)-catechin, miquelianin, quercitrin, and afzelin, which may be active compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. This study provides fundamental data on the anti-inflammatory activity of the FG and can serve as a good starting point for developing a novel natural anti-inflammatory agent using FGE-containing bioactive flavonoids.

Daphnetin inhibits α-MSH-induced melanogenesis via PKA and ERK signaling pathways in B16F10 melanoma cells

Daphnetin is a dehydroxylated derivative of coumarin isolated from Daphne species. However, the effect of daphnetin on melanogenesis has not been elucidated. This study aims to investigate the inhibitory effect of daphnetin on melanogenesis in α-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH)-treated B16F10 cells and its potential mechanism. Melanin content analysis and cellular tyrosinase activity assay showed that daphnetin inhibited melanin biosynthesis in α-MSH-treated B16F10 cells. Immunoblotting and qRT-PCR also indicated that daphnetin suppressed the expression of microphthalmia-associated transcription factor, a mastering transcription factor of melanogenesis and its downstream melanogenic enzymes including tyrosinase and tyrosinase-related proteins. Moreover, daphnetin downregulated the phosphorylation of PKA, ERK, MSK1, and CREB. Additionally, daphnetin inhibited melanin synthesis in UVB-irradiated HaCaT conditioned medium system suggesting that daphnetin has potential as an antipigmentation activity in a physiological skin condition. Our data propose that daphnetin inhibits melanogenesis via modulating both the PKA/CREB and the ERK/MSK1/CREB pathways.

Biotechnology of the Tree Fern Cyathea smithii (J.D. Hooker; Soft Tree Fern, Katote) II Cell Suspension Culture: Focusing on Structure and Physiology in the Presence of 2,4-D and BAP

The aim of our research was to describe the structure and growth potential of a cell suspension of the tree fern Cyathea smithii. Experiments were performed on an established cell suspension with ½ MS medium supplemented with 9.05 µM 2,4-D + 0.88 µM BAP. In the experiments, attention was paid to the microscopic description of cell suspension, evaluation of cell growth dependent on the initial mass of cells and organic carbon source in the medium, the length of the passage, the content of one selected flavonoid in the post-culture medium, nuclear DNA content, ethylene production, and the antimicrobial value of the extract. For a better understanding of the cell changes that occurred during the culture of the suspension, the following structures of the cell were observed: nucleus, lipid bodies, tannin deposits, starch grains, cell walls, primary lamina, and the filaments of metabolites released into the medium. The nuclear DNA content (acriflavine-Feulgen staining) of cell aggregates distinctly indicated a lack of changes in the sporophytic origin of the cultured cell suspension. The physiological activity of the suspension was found to be high because of kinetics, intensive production of ethylene, and quercetin production. The microbiological studies suggested that the cell suspension possessed a bactericidal character against microaerobic Gram-positive bacteria. A sample of the cell suspension showed bacteriostatic activity against aerobic bacteria.

Plant Terpenoids as the Promising Source of Cholinesterase Inhibitors for Anti-AD Therapy

Plant-derived terpenes have been a research interest in the recent years, as they are believed to possess the ability to function as a cholinesterase inhibitor. As the deficit of cholinergic activity is one of the factors that causes cognitive impairment in Alzheimer’s disease patients, it serves as a great therapeutic target. It has been found that various terpenoids, such as diterpenoids, triterpenoids and sesquiterpenoids, do have the ability to inhibit cholinesterase activity, and their chemical structures do play a role in this. As terpenoids possess anti-cholinesterase properties, it is encouraged to have future research on drug discovery and development in treating Alzheimer’s disease.

Abstract

Plant-derived terpenes are the prolific source of modern drugs such as taxol, chloroquine and artemisinin, which are widely used to treat cancer and malaria infections. There are research interests in recent years on terpene-derived metabolites (diterpenes, triterpenes and sesquiterpenes), which are believed to serve as excellent cholinesterase inhibitors. As cholinesterase inhibitors are the current treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, terpene-derived metabolites will have the potential to be involved in the future drug development for Alzheimer’s disease. Hence, a bibliographic search was conducted by using the keywords “terpene”, “cholinesterase” and “Alzheimer’s disease”, along with cross-referencing from 2011 to 2020, to provide an overview of natural terpenes with potential anticholinesterase properties. This review focuses on the extraction, chemical structures and anti-cholinesterase mechanisms of terpenes, which support and encourage future research on drug discovery and development in treating Alzheimer’s disease.

Application of enzyme-digested soy protein hydrolysate on hydroponic-planted lettuce: Effects on phytochemical contents, biochemical profiles and physical properties

Plant-derived protein hydrolysates (PH) offer many promising benefits and applications. In this paper, PH was prepared from soy-based processing waste via enzymatic-digestion method and supplemented into hydroponic grow medium solution. The hydroponic-planted lettuces were then harvested and assessed for their selected phytochemical contents, biochemical parameters, antioxidative enzymes and mineral contents. Additionally, the lettuce’s physical properties were assessed. Based on our results, increases in three phytochemical contents were observed, in a PH concentration-dependent manner (0–0.01 mg/mL). Similar trends were also observed for chlorophyll and carotenoid contents. Harvested lettuce length and fresh weight peaked at 0.01 mg/mL PH treatment group, but not in a PH concentration-dependent manner. Whereas, for other physical properties (lettuce leaf surface area, root length, root weight), no significant difference was detected. Through this study, we are hoping to contribute toward the potential PH application as agricultural nutrient supplement for hydroponic plants, with accompanied improvements in harvest yields and nutritional contents.

Drug Delivery of Natural Products Through Nanocarriers for Effective Breast Cancer Therapy: A Comprehensive Review of Literature

Despite recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer (BC), it remains a global health issue affecting millions of women annually. Poor prognosis in BC patients is often linked to drug resistance as well as the lack of effective therapeutic options for metastatic and triple-negative BC. In response to these unmet needs, extensive research efforts have been devoted to exploring the anti-BC potentials of natural products owing to their multi-target mechanisms of action and good safety profiles. Various medicinal plant extracts/essential oils and natural bioactive compounds have demonstrated anti-cancer activities in preclinical BC models. Despite the promising preclinical results, however, the clinical translation of natural products has often been hindered by their poor stability, aqueous solubility and bioavailability. There have been attempts to overcome these limitations, particularly via the use of nano-based drug delivery systems (NDDSs). This review highlights the tumour targeting mechanisms of NDDSs, the advantages and disadvantages of the major classes of NDDSs and their current clinical status in BC treatment. Besides, it also discusses the proposed anti-BC mechanisms and nanoformulations of nine medicinal plants' extracts/essential oils and nine natural bioactive compounds; selected via the screening of various scientific databases, including PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar, based on the following keywords: "Natural Product AND Nanoparticle AND Breast Cancer". Overall, these nanoformulations exhibit improved anti-cancer efficacy against preclinical BC models, with some demonstrating biocompatibility with normal cell lines and mouse models. Further clinical studies are, however, warranted to ascertain their efficacy and biocompatibility in humans.

LC-HRMS Profiling and Antidiabetic, Antioxidant, and Antibacterial Activities of Acacia catechu (L.f.) Willd

Acacia catechu (L.f.) Willd is a profoundly used traditional medicinal plant in Asia. Previous studies conducted in this plant are more confined to extract level. Even though bioassay-based studies indicated the true therapeutic potential of this plant, compound annotation was not performed extensively. This research is aimed at assessing the bioactivity of different solvent extracts of the plant followed by annotation of its phytoconstituents. Liquid chromatography equipped with high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) is deployed for the identification of secondary metabolites in various crude extracts. On activity level, its ethanolic extract showed the highest inhibition towards α-amylase and α-glucosidase with an IC₅₀ of 67.8 ± 1 μg/mL and 10.3 ± 0.1 μg/mL respectively, inspected through the substrate-based method. On the other hand, the plant extract showed an antioxidant activity of 23.76 ± 1.57 μg/mL, measured through radical scavenging activity. Similarly, ethyl acetate and aqueous extracts of A. catechu showed significant inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus with a zone of inhibition (ZoI) of 13 and 14 mm, respectively. With the LC-HRMS-based dereplication strategy, we have identified 28 secondary metabolites belonging to flavonoid and phenolic categories. Identification of these metabolites from A. catechu and its biological implication also support the community-based usage of this plant and its medicinal value.

European ferns as rich sources of antioxidants in the human diet

Wild edible plants have become an attractive variation of the human diet, especially in East Asia, North America, and Oceania. However, their potential in nutrition is only rarely considered in Europe. This study aims to reveal the nutritional and antioxidant potential of mature fern leaves from 13 families grown in Europe. We found that most of the examined fern species displayed a high antioxidant capacity, exceeding 0.5 g Trolox equivalent per gram of extract dry weight in ORAC assay and reaching IC₅₀ values lower than 30 µg·mL^-1 in DPPH assay (with the value for Trolox 7 µg·mL^-1). Most of the species also appeared to be a good source of carotenoids, especially of lutein (205 µg·g^-1 DW on average) and β-carotene (161 µg·g^-1 DW on average) when compared to the reference leafy vegetables spinach and rocket. A cytotoxicity test using ovine hepatocytes showed a non-toxicity effect of fern leaf extracts.

Development of a Pteris vittata L. compound database by widely targeted metabolomics profiling

The objective of this work was the development of a detailed, extensive and reliable database of the metabolomes of P. vittata. Using an ultra-performance liquid chromatography-triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry system (UPLC-QqQ-MS/MS) and based on the knowledge of retention time and mass spectral characteristics of an in-house collection of authentic standards, we screened for the presence of a large collection of natural compounds. The database represents 359 authenticated metabolites, comprising 220 primary and 139 secondary metabolites (70 flavonoids, 16 phenylpropanoic acid derivatives, five coumarins, two stilbenoids, 14 benzoic acids, nine phenols, 20 alkaloids and three terpenoids). Comparison of the accumulation of these compounds in two tissues showed that the aerial parts were enriched in flavonols, whereas the subterranean parts were enriched in anthocyanins. The comprehensive database developed here will be beneficial in improving the understanding of the chemical basis of plant therapeutic profile using multivariate analysis, with a particular example of antioxidant activity.

Nutritional and Antioxidant Potential of Fiddleheads from European Ferns

Ferns are part of the diet and traditional medicine in East Asia, North America, and Oceania, however, their importance has been forgotten in Europe. Here, the nutritional and antioxidant potential of young fern fronds (fiddleheads) of eight families were studied. Most of the tested fern species excelled in high antioxidant capacity when compared to the reference leafy vegetables spinach and rocket. On average, the total phenol content reached 220 mg·g-1 of extract dry weight for all fiddleheads, and 15 out of 24 tested species exceeded 1 g Trolox equivalent per gram of extract dry weight in Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) assay. On the other hand, fiddleheads contained a comparable amount of carotenoids and ascorbic acid with the reference vegetables. In the case of fatty acid composition, fiddleheads contained especially high amounts of essential omega-3 (n3) and omega-6 (n6) polyunsaturated fatty acids with a beneficial n6/n3 ratio. The n6/n3 ratio in all tested species was between 2 and 6.4, whereas the ratio in the reference vegetables was below 0.4. All in all, fiddleheads from European ferns are a rich source of valuable antioxidants and essential fatty acids with a desirable n-6/n-3 ratio and may thus form an alternative source of these compounds, especially for those people not consuming fish and fish products.

Rutaecarpine Protects against Acetaminophen-Induced Acute Liver Injury in Mice by Activating Antioxidant Enzymes

Rutaecarpine, an indolopyridoquinazolinone alkaloid isolated from the unripe fruit of Evodia rutaecarpa, is used to treat hypertension, postpartum hemorrhage, dysentery, and amenorrhea as a traditional medicine in Asia. We investigated the effect of rutaecarpine on acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity in mice. Rutaecarpine was administered orally daily for seven consecutive days, followed by intraperitoneal injection of acetaminophen in mice on day seven to induce hepatotoxicity. Rutaecarpine pretreatment significantly decreased acetaminophen-induced serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT)/aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activities and hepatic malondialdehyde content and prevented acetaminophen-induced hepatic glutathione depletion. Furthermore, CYP2E1 expression was decreased by rutaecarpine pretreatment in a dose-dependent manner. Rutaecarpine pretreatment inhibited acetaminophen-induced expression of inflammatory cytokines by inhibiting NF-κB activation by JNK1/2. Also, rutaecarpine pretreatment promoted Nrf2-mediated activation of the antioxidant enzymes GCLC, HO-1, and NQO1. This indicates that the protective effect of rutaecarpine during acetaminophen-induced acute liver injury is mediated by the activation of antioxidant enzymes. Therefore, rutaecarpine has a protective effect of APAP-induced liver damage.

Phytochemical conjugation as a potential semisynthetic approach toward reactive and reuse of obsolete sulfonamides against pathogenic bacteria

The emergence and reemergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria and mycobacteria in community and hospital periphery have directly enhanced the hospitalization costs, morbidity and mortality, globally. The appearance of MDR pathogens, the currently used antibiotics, remains insufficient, and the development of potent antibacterial(s) is merely slow. Thus, the development of active antibacterials is the call of the day. The sulfonamides class of antibacterials was the most successful synthesized drug in the 19th century. Mechanically, sulfonamides were targeting bacterial folic acid biosynthesis and today, those are obsolete or clinically inactive. Nevertheless, the magic sulfonamide pharmacophore has been used continuously in several mainstream antibacterial, antidiabetic, antiviral drugs. Concomitantly, thousands of phytochemicals with antimicrobial potencies have been recorded and were commanded as alternate antibacterials toward control of MDR pathogens. However, none/very few isolated phytochemicals have gone up to the pure-drug stage due to the lack of the desired drug-likeness values and the required pharmacokinetic properties. Thus, chemical modification of parent drug remains as the versatile approach in antibacterial drug development. Improvement of clinically inactive sulfa drugs with suitable phytochemicals to develop active, low-toxic drug molecules followed by medicinal chemistry could be prudent. This review highlights such "sulfonamide-phytochemical" hybrid drug development research works for utilizing inactive sulfonamides and phytochemicals; the ingenious cost-effective and resource-saving hybrid drug concept could be a new trend in current antibacterial drug discovery to reactive the obsolete antibacterials.

Adiantic acid, a new unsaturated fatty acid with a cyclopropane moiety from Adiantum flabellulatum L

Phytochemical investigation of Adiantum flabellulatum L. led to the isolation of four natural compounds, including a novel unsaturated fatty acid with a cyclopropane moiety, i.e. (S,E)-7-(2-octylcyclopropylidene)heptanoic acid (1), together with three known compounds, isoadiantol B (2), stigmast-4-en-6β-ol-3-one (3), β-sitosterol (4). Compound 3 was isolated from the A. flabellulatum L. for the first time. The structure of 1 was elucidated following a comprehensive analysis of spectroscopic analyses including MS, 1 D and 2 D NMR, and by a mass spectrometry experiment of the dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) adduct, while the known compounds were identified by comparisons with those reported in the literature. Enzyme evaluation of 1 indicated this compound possesses anti- protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP1B) activity with an IC₅₀ value of 6.99 ± 0.41 μM in vitro.

Incorporation of amino moiety to alepterolic acid improve activity against cancer cell lines: Synthesis and biological evaluation

Aleuritopteris argentea (S. G. Gmél.) Fée is a medicinal fern consisting of an ent-labdane diterpene, i.e. alepterolic aicd, as the major metabolite. We recently isolated grams of alepterolic acid from A. argentea enabling subsequent structural modification. By incorporation of amino moiety to alepterolic acid, fifteen amide derivatives were synthesized, characterized, and further biological evaluated regarding their activity against four cancer cells and normal human liver cells. The potency of synthesized amides dramatically improved as compared to alepterolic aicd itself. The best hit (compound 11) inhibits HeLa cells with an IC₅₀ of 7.39 ± 0.80 μM, and is nearly nontoxic to normal cells. Compound 11 exhibits an inhibitory effect on the colony forming ability of the four cancer cells, especially of HeLa cells. Moreover, it induces apoptosis of HeLa cells by decreasing mitochondrial membrane potential and altering expression of apoptosis-associated proteins. Release of cytochrome c, activation of caspases-3, caspases-9 and alteration of Bax/Bcl-2 balance was detected in the biological assays. These results imply that compound 11 can inhibit the proliferation of cervical cancer cell line HeLa and induce apoptosis through the mitochondrial pathway. These findings encourage further rational structural modification of 15- carboxyl group of alepterolic acid.

LC-MS analysis and cytoprotective effect against the mercurium and aluminium toxicity by bioactive products of Psidium brownianum Mart. ex DC

This study aimed to verify the chelating, antioxidant and cytoprotective activities of Psidium brownianum Mart. Ex DC against mercury and aluminum. The ethanolic extract, as well as the tannic and flavonoid fractions, were prepared and subjected to liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. Ferric ion reduction and antioxidant activity measurement using the FRAP method were performed with P. brownianum. After determining the sub-allelopathic doses, germination tests using Lactuca sativa (lettuce) seeds were performed. The main compounds identified in the extract and fractions were: quercetin and its derivatives; myricetin and its derivatives; gallic acid; ellagic acid; quinic acid and gallocatechin. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) for all samples were ≥ 1024 μg/mL. The flavonoid fraction in association with mercury chloride demonstrated cytoprotection (p < 0.001). The sub-allelopathic concentration used was 64 μg/mL. The extract and fractions were cytoprotective for radicles and caulicles when assayed in association with mercury and against aluminum for radicles. This suggests that the P. brownianum extract and its fractions present cytoprotective activity, possibly related to the antioxidant effect of secondary metabolites, especially flavonoids.

Evaluation of Anti-Tyrosinase and Antioxidant Properties of Four Fern Species for Potential Cosmetic Applications

Ferns are poorly explored species from a pharmaceutical perspective compared to other terrestrial plants. In this work, the antioxidant and tyrosinase inhibitory activities of hydrophilic and lipophilic extracts, together with total polyphenol content, were evaluated in order to explore the potential cosmetic applications of four Spanish ferns collected in the Prades Mountains (Polypodium vulgare L., Asplenium adiantum-nigrum L., Asplenium trichomanes L., and Ceterach officinarum Willd). The antioxidant activity was evaluated using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical, oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) and xanthine/xanthine oxidase (X/XO) assays. The potential to avoid skin hyperpigmentation was tested by inhibiting the tyrosinase enzyme, as this causes melanin synthesis in the epidermis. All ferns were confirmed as antioxidant and anti-tyrosinase agents, but interestingly hydrophilic extracts (obtained with methanol) were more potent and effective compared to lipophilic extracts (obtained with hexane). Polypodium vulgare, Asplenium adiantum-nigrum, and Ceterach officinarum methanolic extracts performed the best as antioxidants. Polypodium vulgare methanolic extract also showed the highest activity as a tyrosinase inhibitor.

Report on the 2nd International Symposium on Phytochemicals in Medicine and Food (4-7 April 2017, FuZhou, China)

The second International Symposium on Phytochemicals in Medicine and Food (2-ISPMF), organized by the Phytochemical Society of Europe (PSE), the Phytochemical Society of Asia (PSA) and the International Society for Chinese Medicine (ISCM), was held on 4-7 April 2017 in FuZhou, China. This symposium created a stage for more than 290 scientists from 33 countries to discuss the latest research in phytochemicals for food and human health. The program comprised 14 plenary lectures, 27 invited talks, 49 short oral presentations, a graduate student forum consisting of 22 oral presentations, and more than 110 posters. 2-ISPMF received supports from several international journals.

ABSTRACT Ceratocystis cacaofunesta is the etiologic agent of “Ceratocystis wilt of cacao”, an irreversible disease that affects the vascular system of the plant. The management of the disease is difficult and economic and alternative solutions are needed. The medicinal plants compounds are known to have antimicrobial activity, and they could be an alternative choice in the C. cacaofunesta control. Considering this, this work aimed to verify the in vitro antifungal activity of aqueous and alcoholic solutions of Adiantum latifolium leaves on C. cacaofunesta. Plant material was collected at Atlantic Forest biome in cacao cultivation area in South of Bahia state. Aqueous and ethanolic solutions were made by boiling and maceration in 70% ethanol, respectively. After filtration, they were added to culture medium at 1, 5 and 10% dilution. A 7 mm disc colony of C. cacaofunesta was inoculated in the middle of the well containing Sabouraud dextrose agar (SDA) and the mycelial growth was observed. Controls consisted on SDA with sterile water or 70% ethanol at the same dilution of treatments, and Tebuconazole at 4 μg.mL-1. Neither aqueous nor ethanolic solutions inhibited the mycelial growth. However, aqueous solution presence induced a higher mycelial growth rate. Conversely, aqueous solution treatment induced mycelial growth. Tebuconazole showed important mycelial growth inhibition and it could be considered in C. cacaofunesta propagation control in areas where genetic selection or handling management still fail.

Ancient Food Habits Dictate that Food Can Be Medicine but Medicine Cannot Be "Food"!!

Background: Extensive surveys of several population settlements in different parts of India-covering plains, mountains, valleys, river banks and deeper areas of forests at different altitudes-between 1968 and 2016 demonstrated that the basic vital need of hunger is being fulfilled since antiquity by plants in the wild. Methods: Based on collections, consultations with local population personnel and literature searches, this paper presents many plants that are commonly used as food and focuses on their products, which are rich in alkaloids, polysaccharides, steroids, terpenoids, flavonoids, aminoacids, fatty acids and antibiotics etc. These complex organic compounds are suitable for the production of drugs for many ailments/diseases, including the prevention of cancers. Results: There are more than 100 families including several hundred plant taxa from various plant groups like angiosperms, bryophytes, pteridophytes, gymnosperms and even fleshy fungi, which have offered essential food items to ever-growing human populations since antiquity. Phytochemicals functioning as antioxidants are exceedingly beneficial to the human body but excess consumption of these compounds, adding higher levels of antioxidants, may even be responsible for chronic diseases including aging, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, atherosclerosis, etc. These medicines can obviously be taken in small and prescribed quantities but can never be consumed as "food items."
