Abstract
PURPOSE The roles of metabolic indices in predicting chronic kidney disease (CKD) were lacking. This study aimed to examine the concomitant impact of metabolic and novel anthropometric indices on incident CKD in the Chinese populations. METHODS This prospective cohort study included 1825 males and 2218 females aged between 45 and 85 years, derived from the ongoing prospectively cohort of China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), from 2011 to 2015. The outcome was defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2. RESULTS During the 5-years follow-up period, 3.0% (55/1825) of males and 4.1% (90/2218) of the females developed CKD. After multivariable adjustment, elevated triglyceride (TG), low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), serum uric acid (sUA), elevated visceral fat index (VFI), elevated body shape index (BSI) and elevated body roundness index (BRI) in males, and sUA, and BRI in females were the independent predictors for CKD. Composite scores, composed of sUA, history of cardiovascular disease (CVD), waist circumstance (WC), HDL-C, and BRI in males and sUA, hypertension, and BRI in females were constructed that could accurately predict CKD. CONCLUSION Our study found that elevated levels of TG, sUA, BSI, BRI, and diminished HDL in males and elevated levels of sUA, and BRI in females, are indicative of the incident CKD. The composite score, integrating a history of disease, metabolic indices, and noval anthropometric indices, could accurately differentiate individuals with and without incident CKD, proving useful for CKD care and management.

Abstract
Background Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a leading cause of death worldwide and has a high cost of treatment. Studies have indicated that a combination of waist circumference (WC) and triglyceride (TG) levels can be used to determine the risk of CKD. This study analyzes the risk of CKD using four phenotype models based on WC and TG. Methods This meta-analysis analyzes 113,019 participants from 13 studies. We conducted relevant literature searches in the Europe PMC, Medline, and Scopus databases using specific keywords. The results obtained were pooled into odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) using random-effects models. Results Our pooled analysis revealed that the highest significant independent association was between CKD and the high WC-high TG phenotype (adjusted OR, 1.61; 95% CI, 1.39 to 1.88; P<0.00001; I2=59%), followed by the high WC-normal TG phenotype (adjusted OR, 1.33; 95% CI, 1.12 to 1.57; P=0.001; I2=67%), and the normal WC-high TG phenotype (adjusted OR, 1.20; 95% CI, 1.06 to 1.37; P=0.005; I2=29%) when the normal WC-normal TG phenotype was taken as the reference. Conclusion Our study suggests that phenotype models based on WC and TG can be used as screening tools to predict the risk of CKD. Our results also indicate that WC plays a larger role than TG in the CKD risk. Further prospective studies are needed to confirm the results of our study.

Abstract
AimsWe aimed to investigate the association of visceral adiposity index (VAI) with decreased renal function in US adults.Design and methodsCross-sectional data were analyzed for 35,018 adults in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005–2018. VAI was determined using waist circumference, body mass index (BMI), triglycerides (TGs) and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol. Albuminuria was defined as urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) >30 mg/g. A low estimated-glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was defined as an eGFR lower than 60 ml/min/1.73 m2. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) was defined as either albuminuria or low-eGFR. A multivariable logistic regression analysis was utilized to explore the relationship of VAI with albuminuria, low-eGFR and CKD. Subgroup analysis and interaction tests were also conducted.ResultsA total of 35,018 participants were enrolled with albuminuria, low-eGFR, and CKD prevalence rates of 5.18, 6.42, and 10.62%, respectively, which increased with the higher VAI tertiles. After full adjustment, a positive association of VAI with albuminuria (OR = 1.03, 95% CI: 1.00, 1.06) and CKD (OR = 1.04, 95% CI: 1.02, 1.06) was observed. Participants in the highest VAI tertile had a significantly 30% increased risk for albuminuria (OR = 1.30, 95% CI: 1.07, 1.58) and a 27% increased risk for CKD (OR = 1.27, 95% CI: 1.08, 1.49) compared with those in the lowest VAI tertile. No statistically significant association between VAI and low-eGFR was detected. Subgroup analysis and the interaction term indicated that there was no significant difference among different stratifications.ConclusionVisceral adiposity accumulation evaluating by VAI was associated with increased likelihood of the decline in renal function.

Abstract
Purpose This study aimed to clarify the relationship between liver fibrosis scores (Fibrosis-4, BARD score, and BAAT score) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Methods We collected a range of data from 11,503 subjects (5,326 men and 6,177 women) from the rural regions of Northeastern China. Three liver fibrosis scores (LFSs) including fibrosis-4 (FIB-4), BARD score, and BAAT score were adopted. A logistic regression analysis was used to calculate odds ratios and the 95% confidence interval. A subgroup analysis showed the association between LFSs and CKD under different stratifications. Restricted cubic spline could further explore whether there is a linear relationship between LFSs and CKD. Finally, we used C-statistics, Net Reclassification Index (NRI), and Integrated Discrimination Improvement (IDI) to assess the effect of each LFS on CKD. Results Through the baseline characteristics, we observed that LFSs were higher in the CKD population than in non-CKD. The proportion of participants with CKD also increased with LFSs. In a multivariate logistic regression analysis, the ORs of CKD were 6.71 (4.45-10.13) in FIB-4, 1.88 (1.29-2.75) in the BAAT score, and 1.72 (1.28-2.31) in the BARD score by comparing the high level with the low level in each LFSs. Moreover, after adding LFSs to the original risk prediction model, which consisted of age, sex, drinking, smoking, diabetes, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and mean waist circumference, we found the new models have higher C-statistics. Furthermore, NRI and IDI both indicate LFSs had a positive effect on the model. Conclusions Our study showed that LFSs are associated with CKD among middle-aged populations in rural areas of northeastern China.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between the dynamic course of insulin resistance and chronic kidney disease (CKD). METHODS In a longitudinal population-based Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study, 3071 eligible participants aged ≥20 years were followed for 18 years at three-year intervals. HOMA-IR and clinical surrogate markers of insulin resistance, including triglyceride-glucose index (TyG), visceral adiposity index (VAI), and lipid accumulation product (LAP), were calculated. Using latent variable mixture modeling, sex-specific trajectories were plotted for each insulin resistance marker. Trajectory group association of the insulin resistance markers with CKD was determined using the multivariate cox proportional hazards regression model. RESULTS For HOMA-IR, two distinct trajectory patterns (stable and increasing), and for TyG, VAI, and LAP, three trajectories (low, moderate, high) were identified. The participants with increasing HOMA-IR trajectory had a significantly increased risk of CKD in men (HR: 1.72, 95%CI: 1.06-2.79) and women (HR: 1.37, 95%CI: 1.00-1.89) after adjusting confounding variables. The high TyG and VAI trajectory classes were associated with a higher risk of CKD than the low TyG and VAI trajectory classes in both men (TyG: HR:1.97, 95%CI: 1.12-3.46; VAI: HR:1.66, 95%CI:1.06-2.62) and women (TyG: HR:1.50, 95%CI:1.06-2.12; VAI: HR:1.66, 95%CI:1.20-2.31). In contrast, the High LAP (HR: 3.38, 95%CI: 2.08-5.48) trajectory was associated with incident CKD only in women. CONCLUSION An increasing trend of HOMA-IR is associated with a higher risk of CKD in men and women. Among clinical insulin resistance surrogate markers, abnormal trajectory patterns of LAP in women and TyG and VAI in both sexes are associated with a higher risk of CKD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The association between visceral adiposity index (VAI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) remains debatable. We aimed to prospectively investigate the relationship between VAI and CKD. METHODS AND RESULTS A total of 8808 participants from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study were included. Males and females were divided into four groups according to gender-specific quartiles of VAI scores. CKD was based on self-reported physicians' diagnosis or personal eGFR level. A logistic regression model was established to analyze the correlation between VAI and CKD. A meta-analysis was conducted to incorporate the results of the current study and previous studies on the association of VAI with CKD. During 7 years of follow-up, a total of 826 participants (9.38%) experienced CKD. In multivariable-adjusted analyses, the adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) for the highest versus lowest quartile of VAI was 1.33 (1.03-1.77) for male, and 1.10 (0.81-1.48) for female, respectively. The meta-analysis found the significant associations between VAI and CKD in total, male and female participants (pooled relative risk for highest vs lowest VAI quartile were 2.24(1.70-2.95), 2.36(1.54-3.61) and 2.57 (1.57-4.22), respectively). CONCLUSIONS Higher VAI score was associated with increased risk of CKD, independently of established risk factors. The VAI may be a predictor of incident CKD, but only among male participants based on present study.

Abstract
Evidence on the association between hypertriglyceridemic-waist phenotype (HTGW) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) is limited and inconsistent. We aimed to explore such association among 7406 Chinese aged ≥ 45 years in a cohort setting, followed by a meta-analysis. Participants were categorized into four phenotypes: NTNW (normal triglycerides and normal waist circumference), NTGW (isolated enlarged waist circumference), HTNW (isolated high triglycerides), and HTGW (high triglycerides and enlarged waist circumference). We used multivariate logistic regression to determine the association between different phenotypes and risk of CKD in the cohort study. For meta-analysis, we searched relevant studies from Embase, Medline, PubMed, and Web of Science from dataset inception up to May 1, 2021. A random-effect model was used to estimate the pooled effect and I2 statistic was applied to evaluate heterogeneity. In the cohort study, compared to the NTNW phenotype, HTGW (OR 1.82, 95% CI 1.32 to 2.51, p < 0.01) and NTGW (OR 1.48, 95% CI 1.13 to 1.94, p = 0.004) were significantly associated with CKD risk after 4 years follow-up, but not for the HTNW phenotype. The meta-analysis also showed a positive association between HTGW phenotype and CKD risk (pooled OR 1.53, 95% CI 1.31 to 1.79, I2 = 62.4%). Assessment of triglyceridemic-waist phenotypes might help to identify individuals with high-risk of developing CKD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was measuring the association between the hypertriglyceridemic-waist (HTGW) phenotype and chronic kidney disease in a large type 2 diabetes population. METHODS A total of 4254 diabetic patients from the cross-sectional Environmental Pollutant Exposure and Metabolic Diseases in Shanghai (METAL) study were enrolled. The hypertriglyceridemic-waist (HTGW) phenotype was defined as the presence of an elevated waist circumference (WC) and elevated triglyceride (TG) concentration. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) was defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) less than 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 or urinary albumin creatinine ratio (uACR) more than 30 mg/g. Linear and multiple logistic regression models were used for measuring the association between HTGW phenotype and chronic kidney disease. RESULTS The prevalence of CKD was 29% and 35.8% in total participants and participants with HTGW phenotype, respectively. Subjects in the HTGW phenotype group were more likely to have CKD (OR 1.47, 95% CI: 1.11, 1.95) compared with subjects in the normal waist circumference and normal triglycerides (NTNW) group. HTGW phenotype was both associated with the increasing risk of decreased eGFR (OR 1.31, 95% CI: 1.02, 1.75) and elevated uACR (OR 1.57, 95% CI: 1.18, 2.11). Furthermore, the stratified analysis showed that the strongest positive association between HTGW phenotype and CKD presence was found in the subgroup of presence of hypertension. The associations were all fully adjusted for age, sex, BMI, current smoking, current drinking and other confounding factors. CONCLUSION Our study suggested a positive association between the HTGW phenotype and CKD in Chinese type 2 diabetes patients. Further prospective studies are needed to confirm our findings and to investigate the underlying biological mechanisms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is higher in normal-weight metabolically unhealthy people, especially when combined with hypertension. In this context, whether the visceral adiposity index (VAI), which reflects body fat distribution and metabolism, can be used to identify the risk of CKD among normal-weight hypertensive patients is unclear. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate the association between VAI and renal function in normal-weight hypertensive patients. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 8591 hypertensive patients with normal BMI from the China H-type Hypertension Registry Study were analyzed. The VAI was calculated with serum triglycerides, serum HDL cholesterol, waist circumference, and BMI. VAI was ln-transformed for analysis on account of the skewed distribution. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was calculated using the CKD-Epidemiology Collaboration equation. CKD was defined as an eGFR <60 mL · min-1 · 1.73 m-2. Multivariable linear and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the association of VAI with eGFR and CKD. RESULTS The prevalence rate of CKD was 10.1%. Multivariable linear regression analyses showed that an elevated lnVAI reduced eGFR by 2.63 mL · min-1 · 1.73 m-2 (95% CI: -3.54, -1.72 mL · min-1 · 1.73 m-2). Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that an elevated lnVAI was independently associated with the prevalence of CKD (OR: 1.59; 95% CI: 1.31, 1.93). As possible confounding factors were removed the association became greater. The higher the VAI was, the greater the decrease in eGFR and the higher the risk of CKD. No significant interactions were found in any of the subgroups (age, sex, physical activity, current smoking, current drinking, fasting glucose, LDL cholesterol, blood pressure, and antihypertensive drugs). CONCLUSIONS VAI, as a simple surrogate measure of visceral fat accumulation, is independently and inversely associated with renal function in normal-weight Chinese hypertensive adults.This trial was registered at chictr.org.cn as ChiCTR1800017274.

Abstract
Background The hypertriglyceridemic waist (HTGW) phenotype has been proposed to be related to the occurrence and progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The ageing trend of the Chinese population continues to intensify, and elderly individuals are at high risk of CKD. The purpose of this study was to investigate the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between the HTGW phenotype and the risk of CKD by following community-dwelling adults aged 60 years and older in Tianjin, China, for 7 years. Methods This study was an observational cohort study conducted between 2013 and 2019. Of 2050 participants aged 60 years and older who underwent an annual health examination in 2013, 1605 individuals with complete data were enrolled in the cross-sectional analysis. Among them, 1271 individuals were observed until 2019. Detailed follow-up records were available for 816 participants, of whom 600 participants without CKD at baseline were eligible for inclusion in the retrospective analysis. The HTGW phenotype was defined as a waist circumference of 90 cm or more and triglyceride concentrations of 2.0 mmol/L or more in males or a waist circumference of 85 cm or more and triglyceride concentrations of 1.5 mmol/L or more in females. CKD was defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) < 60 mL/min/1.73m2 and/or proteinuria (urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) ≥ 30 mg/g). Multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the relationship between the HTGW phenotype and CKD. Results In 2013, the prevalence of CKD among older adults was 31.03%, and the prevalence of CKD in the HTGW phenotype group was 37.81%. Over a 7-year observation period, 195 individuals developed CKD, with an incidence rate of 32.50%. Statistically significant associations were observed between the HTGW phenotype and CKD in older adults in both cross-sectional surveys and retrospective analyses, with odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals of 1.38 (95% CI: 1.03–1.86, P = 0.033) and 2.27 (95% CI: 1.30–3.97, P = 0.004), respectively, after adjustment for confounders. Conclusions In this community-based cohort study, the HTGW phenotype was confirmed to be independently associated with an increased risk of prevalent and incident CKD in older adults aged 60 years and above in Tianjin, China. Abstract
Background Hypertriglyceridemic waist (HTGW) phenotype has been suggested as a risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, there is limited evidence on the relationship of triglyceride waist phenotypes with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) status and severity. Our aim was to explore the associations of triglyceride waist phenotypes with reduced eGFR and various decreased eGFR stages among Chinese adults. Methods A population-based, cross-sectional study was conducted among Chinese participants aged 20–74 years from June 2016 to December 2017 in Shanghai, China. An eGFR value below 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 was defined as decreased eGFR. HTGW phenotype was defined as triglyceride (TG) ≥1.7 mmol/L and a waist circumference (WC) of ≥90 cm for men and ≥ 80 cm for women. We examined the association of triglyceride waist phenotypes with decreased eGFR risk using the weighted logistic regression models. Results A total of 31,296 adults were included in this study. Compared with normal TG level/normal WC (NTNW) phenotype, normal TG level/enlarged WC (NTGW) and elevated TG level/enlarged WC (HTGW) phenotypes were associated with the increased risk of decreased eGFR. Multivariable-adjusted ORs (95% CI) associated with NTGW, elevated TG level/normal WC (HTNW), and HTGW phenotypes were 1.75 (1.41–2.18), 1.29 (0.99–1.68), and 1.99 (1.54–2.58), respectively. These associations between triglyceride waist phenotypes and decreased eGFR risk remained across almost all the subgroups, including sex, age, BMI, T2DM, and hypertension. HTGW phenotype was consistently positively associated with the risk of mildly and moderately decreased eGFR, but not with severely decreased eGFR risk. Conclusions HTGW was consistently associated with the increased risk of decreased eGFR and various decreased eGFR stages, except for severely decreased eGFR. Further prospective studies are warranted to confirm our findings and to investigate the underlying biological mechanisms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Visceral adiposity index (VAI) is a sex-specific surrogate marker of adipose tissue distribution and function. Little is known about the longitudinal relationship between VAI and proteinuria. This study aimed to examine the prospective relationship of baseline VAI with new-onset of proteinuria in hypertensive patients without major cardiovascular diseases. METHODS A total of 10 699 hypertensive patients without proteinuria (negative urine dipstick reading) at baseline from the renal sub-study of the China Stroke Primary Prevention Trial (CSPPT) were included. Participants were randomly assigned to a double-blind daily treatment with 10 mg enalapril and 0.8 mg folic acid or 10 mg enalapril alone. Participants were followed every 3 months after randomization. The primary outcome was new-onset proteinuria, defined as a urine dipstick reading of ≥1+ at the exit visit. The secondary outcome was progression of proteinuria, defined as a urine dipstick reading of trace or ≥1+ at the exit visit. RESULTS During a median follow-up duration of 4.4 years, a total of 396 (3.7%) participants developed new-onset proteinuria, while 1236 (11.6%) participants met progression of proteinuria. When VAI was categorized into quartiles, compared with participants in quartile 1-3 (<2.99), a significantly higher risk of new-onset proteinuria (OR, 1.43; 95%CI: 1.07-1.91) and progression of proteinuria (OR, 1.23; 95%CI: 1.03-1.46) was found in those in quartile 4 (≥2.99). Moreover, the positive association was consistent in participants with or without general obesity, abdominal obesity, and dyslipidemia (all P-interactions > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS There was a positive association between VAI levels and the risk of new-onset proteinuria in hypertensive patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study was to perform a meta-analysis to assess the relationship between hypertriglyceridemic-waist (HTW) phenotype and abnormal glucose metabolism. METHODS The data sources were PubMed and EMBASE up to June 2018. Studies providing the relationship between HTW phenotype and abnormal glucose metabolism were included. RESULTS In total, 48 eligible studies that evaluated 2,42,879 subjects were included in the meta-analysis. In the general population, the pooled odds ratios (ORs) for elevated blood glucose and diabetes related to HTW phenotype was 2.32 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.98-2.71) and 2.69 (95% CI: 2.40-3.01), respectively. In cohort studies, the pooled OR for diabetes related to HTW phenotype was 2.89 (95% CI: 1.97-4.25) in subjects without diabetes. The levels of homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) in the HTW population were increased with values of mean differences (MD) 1.12 (95% CI: 0.81-1.43. P < 0.00001, I2 = 99%) in the general population and 0.89 (95% CI: 0.75-1.04, P < 0.00001, I2 = 67%) in subjects without diabetes. CONCLUSION HTW phenotype was closely associated with increased risk of abnormal glucose metabolism. There was also a significant correlation between HTW phenotype and insulin resistance.

Abstract
Background Obesity is a well-established risk factor for atherosclerosis. However, it is unknown which measure of adiposity best relates to atherosclerosis in relatively lean maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients. We aimed to explore and compare the associations between different adiposity indices reflecting general, abdominal, visceral adiposity and arteriosclerosis risk with atherogenic index of plasma(AIP) in relatively lean MHD patients. Methods We conducted a multicenter, cross-sectional study in Guizhou Province, Southwest China. General/abdominal adiposity indices like body mass index (BMI), waist circumference(WC), waist-height ratio(WHtR), conicity index (Ci) and visceral obesity indices including visceral adiposity index (VAI), lipid accumulation product (LAP) and the hypertriglyceridemic waist phenotype (HW phenotype) were recorded. Univariate and multivariate linear regression models were used. Results All adiposity indices correlated positively with AIP in univariate analysis both in men and women except for Ci. After adjustment for age and traditional atherosclerosis risk factors, BMI, WC, WHtR, VAI and LAP still had associations with AIP both in men (β = 0.265, 0.153, 0.16, 0.788 and 0.74, respectively, all P < 0.001) and women (β = 0.34,0.199, 0.21, 0.83 and 0.74, respectively, all P < 0.001). After further adjustment for BMI, associations between AIP and VAI, LAP remained significant, but associations between WC, WHtR and AIP disappeared. Conclusions The HW phenotype, VAI, and LAP, validated and convenient markers of visceral obesity, were superior to classical anthropometric general/ abdominal adiposity indices for atherosclerosis risk assessment, especially in relatively lean MHD patients aged 40 years or older.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The effects of visceral fat accumulation on the renal damage have drawn much attention. We aimed to investigate the possible relationship between visceral adiposity and albuminuria. METHODS We included information from a population-based study in 9473 subjects aged 40 years or older. As a novel and valid indicator for visceral adipose function, visceral adiposity index (VAI) was determined by gender-specific equations and calculated using simple anthropometric and functional parameters. Increased urinary albumin excretion was defined as albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) 30 mg/g or greater. RESULTS The prevalence rate of increased urinary albumin excretion was 6.6% in this population and gradually increased across VAI quartiles. Participants with higher VAI had elevated age, blood pressure, cholesterol, fasting insulin and decreased high density lipoprotein cholesterol and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) level. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, the adjusted odds ratios (ORs) of increased urinary albumin excretion for increasing VAI quartiles were 1.00 (reference), 1.29 (95% confidence intervals [CI] 0.94-1.76), 1.46 (95% CI 1.08-1.97) and 1.79 (95% CI 1.33-2.41). In subgroup analysis and after multiple adjustments, significant relation between VAI level and prevalent increased urinary albumin excretion was detected in women, younger subjects, non-obesity subjects, those without diabetes and those with eGFR ≥60 ml/min per 1.73 m2. CONCLUSION Visceral fat accumulation evaluating by VAI is independently associated with increased urinary albumin excretion in middle-aged and elderly Chinese.

Abstract
Visceral adiposity index (VAI) is a novel sex-specific index for visceral adipose function; however the association between VAI and hyperuricemia in China is unknown. We aimed to investigate this association, also whether it was independent of metabolic health and obesity phenotypes. 7632 adult subjects from the China Health and Nutrition Survey 2009 were retained. Subjects were categorized into four obesity phenotypes based on a cross-classification of BMI and metabolic health status by two representative criteria. VAI was the best predictors for hyperuricemia irrespective of obesity phenotypes, with area under curve (AUC) ranging 0.665–0.719. The odd ratio (OR) for hyperuricemia in the highest quartile of the VAI were 6.93 (95% CI 5.79–8.29) after adjusting for age and gender. Following further adjustments for metabolic obesity phenotypes and lifestyle confounders, the ORs were 4.88 (3.92–6.09) and 5.65 (4.68–6.82) according to these two criteria, respectively. A similar significant pattern was still found even after adjustment for blood pressure and other cardiovascular risks. Within each metabolic obesity phenotype, the significant association between VAI and hyperuricemia was consistently evident. In conclusion, the association of the VAI with hyperuricemia was significant, especially this association was independent of metabolic health and obesity phenotypes in the Chinese population.

Abstract
Background/Aims The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between hypertriglyceridemic waist (HW) phenotype and early diabetic nephropathy in type 2 diabetes. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted on 538 type 2 diabetes patients in Qinhuangdao. The HW phenotype was defined as serum triglyceride concentrations ≥1.7 mmol/L and waist circumference ≥90 cm (males) and ≥85 cm (females). Results The prevalence of the HW phenotype was 34.9%. The prevalence of early diabetic nephropathy was 10.6% in type 2 diabetes patients with normal waist circumference and triglycerides and 24.5% in type 2 diabetes patients with HW phenotype. After adjustment for sex, age, body mass index, hypertension, history of diabetes, and glycosylated hemoglobin A1c, the prevalence of early diabetic nephropathy among type 2 diabetes patients with the HW phenotype was 2.81 (95% confidence interval 1.36-5.80, p = 0.005) times higher than that among type 2 diabetes patients with normal waist circumference and triglycerides. Conclusion There was a significant correlation between HW phenotype and early diabetic nephropathy in type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
Background: The primary objective of this study was to explore the association of hypertriglyceridemic waist (HTGW) phenotype with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its sex difference in an urban Chinese elderly population. Methods: In a cross-sectional study, a total of 2102 participants aged 60–95 years were recruited and classified into four phenotypes: normal waist-normal triglyceride (NWNT), normal waist-elevated triglycerides (NWET), elevated waist-normal triglycerides (EWNT), and HTGW. Logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the associations of interest. Results: Total prevalence of CKD was 12.6%, and the CKD prevalence in participants with EWNT and HTGW was higher than with NWNT and NWET without regard to sex. Compared to NWNT phenotype, the adjusted OR for CKD was 1.95 (95% CI: 1.32–2.88) in HTGW groups. In contrast with the null findings (OR: 1.66; 95% CI: 0.94–2.94) in women after additional adjustment for diabetes and hypertension, the OR with HTGW remained strong (OR: 1.88; 95% CI: 1.04–3.39) in men. Similar findings appeared with the EWNT phenotype. Conclusions: The HTGW phenotype is positively associated with CKD among Chinese community elderly and may have a greater impact on men. More attention should be paid to the association between triglycerides and waist circumference in clinical practice and to the further identification this uncertain sex-related association.

Visceral Adiposity Index and Lipid Accumulation Product Index: Two Alternate Body Indices to Identify Chronic Kidney Disease among the Rural Population in Northeast China. Abstract
We aimed to compare the relative strength of the association between anthropometric obesity indices and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Another objective was to examine whether the visceral adiposity index (VAI) and lipid accumulation product index (LAPI) can identify CKD in the rural population of China. There were 5168 males and 6024 females involved in this cross-sectional study, and 237 participants (2.12%) suffered from CKD. Obesity indices included body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), VAI and LAPI. VAI and LAPI were calculated with triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), BMI and WC. VAI = [WC/39.68 + (1.88 × BMI)] × (TG /1.03) × (1.31/ HDL) for males; VAI = [WC/36.58 + (1.89 × BMI)] × (TG/0.81) × (1.52/HDL) for females. LAPI = (WC-65) × TG for males, LAPI = (WC-58) × TG for females. CKD was defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of less than 60 mL/min per 1.73 m2. The prevalence of CKD increased across quartiles for WHtR, VAI and LAPI. A multivariate logistic regression analysis of the presence of CKD for the highest quartile vs. the lowest quartile of each anthropometric measure showed that the VAI was the best predictor of CKD in females (OR: 4.21, 95% CI: 2.09–8.47, p < 0.001). VAI showed the highest AUC for CKD (AUC: 0.68, 95% CI: 0.65–0.72) and LAPI came second (AUC: 0.66, 95% CI: 0.61–0.70) in females compared with BMI (both p-values < 0.001). However, compared with the traditional index of the BMI, the anthropometric measures VAI, LAPI, WC, and WHtR had no statistically significant capacity to predict CKD in males. Our results showed that both VAI and LAPI were significantly associated with CKD in the rural population of northeast China. Furthermore, VAI and LAPI were superior to BMI, WC and WHtR for predicting CKD only in females.
