Abstract
BACKGROUND Animal experiments and clinical trials have revealed a potential relationship between sleep disorders and asthma. However, the associations between these factors remain unclear. MATERIAL AND METHODS We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane Library databases for eligible studies published before 30 December 2022. Studies investigating the association between sleep disorders (insomnia, poor sleep quality and insufficient sleep time) and asthma were selected. Sleep disorders were assessed using questionnaires, interviews, or medical records. Asthma was diagnosed based on medical history and drug use. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality checklist were employed for quality assessment. We used OR with 95% CI as the effect measures and forest plots to display the results. Heterogeneity was evaluated using I2 statistics and subgroup analyses were performed for bias analysis. Publication bias was evaluated using the funnel plots and Egger's test. RESULTS Twenty-three studies were included in the primary analysis, which suggested a positive association between sleep disorders and asthma (OR: 1.38, 95% CI 1.10 to 1.74). Subgroup analyses were conducted according to the study design, age, family history of asthma and type of sleep disorders. We did not find any association between sleep disorders and asthma in children aged ˂12 years (OR: 1.13, 95% CI 0.97 to 1.32). The association was insignificant in studies where the family history of asthma was adjusted for (OR: 1.16, 95% CI 0.94 to 1.42). Funnel plot and Egger's test indicated a significant publication bias. CONCLUSION Sleep disorders are associated with an increased prevalence and incidence of asthma. However, the quality of the evidence was low because of potential biases. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER CRD42023391989.

Abstract
Objectives: We aim to determine whether comorbidity profiles, night sleep duration, and napping duration trajectories were associated with incident asthma in Chinese adults.Methods: A total of 7,655 community-dwelling individuals were included in this study. Latent class/profile analysis(LCA/LPA) identified comorbidity profiles, night sleep duration, and napping duration trajectories. A generalized additive model with binomial regression assessed the associations between incident asthma with sleep trajectories.Results: During a 7-year follow-up period, 205 individuals were newly diagnosed with asthma. LPA identified four trajectories of night sleep duration: dominant short (n = 2,480), dominant healthy-long (n = 1,405), long decreasing (n = 1875), and short increasing (n = 1895). We also found three trajectories of napping duration: short increasing (n = 3,746), stable normal (n = 1,379), and long decreasing (n = 2,530). We found three comorbidity profiles: dominant heart diseases or risks (n = 766), multiple disorders (n = 758), and minimal or least disorders (n = 6,131). Compared with dominant short night sleep duration, three other trajectories were associated with significantly decreasing incident asthma. Minimal or least disorders profile was associated with a significant reduction of new-onset asthma than two other comorbidity profiles in dominant short night sleep duration.Conclusion: Our findings suggested that a dominant short night sleep duration trajectory potentially increases incident asthma in Chinese adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between asthma and sleep duration in participants of the Study of Cardiovascular Risks in Adolescents. MATERIALS AND METHODS Cross-sectional, national, school-based study, involving adolescents aged 12-17 years. In the period between 2013-14, data from 59,442 participants were analyzed. Bivariate analysis between current asthma and short sleep duration, defined as < 7 h/night, was performed separately with the other variables analyzed: sex, age group, type of school, weight categories, and common mental disorders. Then, different generalized linear models with Poisson family and logarithmic link functions were used to assess the independence of potential confounding covariates associated with both asthma and short sleep duration in the previous analysis. Crude and adjusted prevalence ratios and respective 95% confidence intervals were calculated, and a value of p < 0.05 was considered significant for all analyses performed. RESULTS Prevalence of current asthma was 13.4%, being significantly higher among students with short sleep duration (PR: 1.17; 95% CI: 1.01-1.35; p = 0.034). This remained significant even after adjusting for the other study covariates. CONCLUSION There was a positive association between the prevalence of current asthma and short sleep duration among Brazilian adolescents. Considering the high prevalence and morbidity of the disease in this age group, the promotion of sleep hygiene should be considered as a possible health strategy aimed at contributing to better control of asthma in this population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study investigates sociodemographic and environmental correlates of sleep duration among school-aged children. DESIGN & SETTING The New York City 2009 Child Community Health Survey was analyzed using weighted regression analyses. PARTICIPANTS 1293 Asian, Black, Latino and White children ages 6-12 years, 999 children in Pre-K - 5th grade and 294 children in the 6th-8th grades. MEASUREMENTS Parents/guardians completed a survey about the target child's sleep duration on a typical school night/day, and sociodemographic and household characteristics. RESULTS Most children (89.3%) met the National Sleep Foundation's (NSF) recommendation of 9-11 h of sleep per night. Pre-K-5th grade children who were born in the United States were less likely than children born outside of the United States to sleep 9-11 h. When sleep duration was examined continuously, children slept an average of 9 h 44 min. On average, with each additional year of age, children slept 7.2 min less than children who were one year younger. Although there were no differences among ethnic/racial groups in sleeping the recommended 9-11 h/night, when sleep duration was measured as a continuous variable, Asian, Latino, and Black children slept an average of 23, 14, and 17 min fewer, respectively, than White children, adjusting for sociodemographic and environmental factors. CONCLUSIONS Sleep duration varied across sociodemographic groups of children in New York City in 2009. Future studies should determine causal influences and whether these differences persist.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study examined the association between sleep duration trajectories from adolescence to young adulthood and the risk of asthma into young adulthood. METHODS Using data from 10,362 participants in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) free of asthma at baseline, we constructed trajectories of sleep duration from adolescence (age 13-18 years) to young adulthood (age 24-32 years) and used them to examine the association between sleep duration patterns and the risk of new-onset asthma using a log-binomial regression model after adjusting for potential confounders. RESULTS The results revealed that 14.4% of nonasthmatic participants had persistent short sleep duration, whereas 80.0% had adequate sleep duration from adolescence through young adulthood. Consistently short-sleepers had 1.52 times the risk of new-onset asthma by age 32 years (95% CI 1.11, 2.10) compared with consistently adequate sleepers. The association was stronger in those with a family history of asthma (aRR = 2.43, 95% CI 1.15, 5.13) than in those without such history (aRR = 1.43, 95% CI 1.05, 1.95). CONCLUSIONS We conclude that persistent short sleep duration is associated with an increased risk of new-onset asthma in young adults. This association may be more pronounced among those at high risk of asthma because of family history.

Abstract
Objectives: In the study, we explored whether sleep chronotypes are associated with asthma in adolescents. Methods: We analyzed 24,655 physician-diagnosed adolescent asthmatic patients and 253,775 non-asthmatic adolescent patients from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBWS). Socioeconomic factors, health behaviors factors, psychological factors, and sleep parameters were assessed using the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire (MCTQ). Logistic regression after adjusting for multiple confounders was used to explore the association between sleep chronotype and asthma. Results: The asthmatic adolescent group slept less (≤5 h: 24.3% vs. 23.2%) than the non-asthmatic adolescent group. Mean sleep duration (430.6 ± 95.6 vs. 433.5 ± 93.6 min), midpoint of sleep on school-free days (MSF; 255.9 ± 75.9 vs. 258.3 ± 73.6 min), midpoint of sleep on school days (MSW; 199.1 ± 49.1 vs. 200.1 ± 48.4 min), sleep duration on school days (SDW; 398.2 ± 98.1 vs. 400.2 ± 96.8 min), and sleep duration on school-free days (SDF; 511.8 ± 151.9 vs. 516.7 ± 147.2 min) were significantly lower, sleep satisfaction was significantly poorer (low sleep satisfaction: 41.3% vs. 37.5%), and late chronotype was significantly higher in the asthmatic adolescent (21.1% vs. 20.0%). After adjusting for multiple confounders, late chronotype was significantly associated with an increased frequency of adolescent asthma (OR 1.05; 95% CI 1.01–1.09) compared to intermediate chronotypes. Conclusions: Although our study shows a very modest association (OR of 1.05 in the fully adjusted model), we show that the late sleep chronotype is associated with asthma in adolescents in South Korea.

Abstract
PURPOSE Inadequate sleep duration affects asthma and weight. The associations among sleep duration, asthma, and different weight statuses in the Chinese population need to be further determined. METHODS The study included 32,776 Chinese adults from the China Health and Nutrition Survey during 2009-2015. Self-reported sleep duration was classified into three groups: ≤ 6 h (short), 7 to 8 h (optimal), and ≥ 9 h (long). Age, sex, smoking, drinking alcohol, and residence location were adjusted as potential confounding factors in a generalized estimating equations model. RESULTS The prevalence of asthma in the Chinese population was approximately 1.17% (383/32,776). Asthmatics were associated with shorter sleep duration and higher indices of central obesity (mean waist circumference, waist to height ratio, and conicity index) than the population without asthma. After adjusting for potential confounding factors, odds ratios (ORs) indicated positive associations between sleep duration and asthma (short vs optimal, adjusted OR = 1.74, 95%CI 1.33, 2.26; and long vs optimal, adjusted OR = 1.51, 95%CI 1.18, 1.93). When stratified by weight status, the participants with central obesity showed highest prevalence of asthma among the three sleep duration groups. With the adjustment of confounding factors, underweight and obesity grouped by waist to height ratio and conicity index remained associated with higher risk of asthma among short and long sleepers than in optimal sleepers. CONCLUSIONS Short and long sleepers with central obesity and underweight status were associated with significantly higher prevalence of asthma than optimal sleepers in Chinese adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inadequate sleep duration potentially increases the risk of allergic asthma; yet, the effect of different sleep duration on asthma-related episodes/attacks and emergency department (ED) visits has remained unclear. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the association between sleep duration, asthma-related episodes/attacks and ED visits. METHODS This study included 1526 asthma participants from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Questionnaire during 2013-2017. Self-reported sleep duration was classified into three groups: ≤6 h (short), 7 h to 8 h (optimal) and ≥9 h (long). Generalized additive model with binomial or Poisson regression was used to complete all statistical analyses. RESULTS During a 12-month period, 857 participants reported acute episodes/attacks of asthma, and 279 participants reported asthma-related ED visits. Asthmatics with ED visits harbored significantly lower mean sleep duration (6.50 h vs 7.01 h, adjusted OR=0.93, 95% CI: 0.88-0.98) than those without episodes/attacks. After adjusting the potential confounding factors, the participants with long sleep duration were associated with lower risk of asthma-related episodes/attacks (adjusted OR=0.59, 95% CI: 0.41-0.86) than those with short sleep duration. The prevalence (adjusted OR=0.67, 95% CI: 0.47-0.94) and frequency (adjusted OR=0.83, 95% CI: 0.69-0.9996) of asthma-related ED visits among short sleepers were significantly higher than that among optimal sleepers. The differences of asthma-related episodes/attacks and ED visits between long and optimal sleepers were statistically insignificant. CONCLUSION Our study demonstrated that asthmatics with short sleep duration were associated with highest prevalence of asthma-related episodes/attacks and ED visits among the three sleep duration groups.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Asthma may worsen during adolescence, due to both health risk behaviors and psychosocial stressors commonly encountered during this life stage. METHODS Cross-sectional study of 24 612 high school students who participated in the 2009 and 2011 National Youth Risk Behavior Survey. Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine the relation between self-reported health risk behaviors or psychosocial stressors and current asthma. Mediation analysis was performed to assess whether depressive symptoms or suicidal behavior contribute to the link between psychosocial stressors and asthma. RESULTS Current asthma was reported by 13.1% of the study participants. In a multivariable analysis, female sex, obesity, shorter sleep duration, frequent soda/pop consumption, and marijuana use were each significantly associated with 14-36% increased odds of asthma. Any violent behavior (adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 1.12, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.02-1.24), any victimization (OR = 1.43, 95%CI = 1.29-1.58), any suicidal behavior (OR = 1.41, 95%CI = 1.22-1.64) and having felt sad or hopeless in the past year (OR = 1.57, 95%CI = 1.40-1.75) were each associated with current asthma. In a mediation analyses, having felt sad/hopeless and suicidal behaviors accounted for 21% and 14%, respectively, of the victimization-asthma association. CONCLUSION Potentially modifiable risk factors, including obesity, short sleep duration, frequent soda/pop consumption, and psychosocial stressors are associated with asthma in US adolescents. Promoting healthier lifestyles, as well as screening for violence exposure and treating depressive symptoms, could help reduce asthma burden in this population.

Abstract
Objectives: Weekend oversleep or catch-up sleep is common among adolescents, but relatively few data are available with regard to its effects on asthma. Our aim was to investigate whether weekend oversleep is associated with ever having asthma among Korean adolescents. Methods: We analyzed web-based self-reported data from the Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey in 25,927 physician-diagnosed adolescent asthma cases and 266,160 non-asthma cases. Self-report questionnaires were used to assess socioeconomic status, health behaviors, psychological factors and sleep patterns. Multiple logistic regression after adjusting for factors was used to determine the association between sleep and asthma. Results: The asthma group slept less (≤5 hours: 23.9% vs. 22.8%) had a later weekend bedtime (≥1:00 AM: 58.1% vs. 57.8%), and an earlier weekend wake time (≤7:00 AM: 18.1% vs. 17.0%) compared to the non-asthma group. After multiple logistic regression, a sleep duration ≤5 hours (odds ratio (OR), 1.09; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.04-1.14) and weekend "early bird" (weekend wake time ≤7:00 AM: OR, 1.03; 95% CI, 1.00-1.07) were significantly associated with an increased frequency of asthma. Long weekend catch-up sleep (weekend sleep duration minus weekday sleep duration ≥2 hours) was significantly associated with a decreased frequency of asthma (OR, 0.98; 95% CI, 0.94-0.99). Conclusion: Long weekend catch-up sleep, as an indicator of insufficient weekday sleep, is associated with a decreased frequency of asthma in Korean adolescents.
