Occurrence, spatial distribution, sources, and risks of polychlorinated biphenyls and heavy metals in surface sediments from a large eutrophic Chinese lake (Lake Chaohu)

Anthropogenic impact of rare earth elements on groundwater and surface water in the watershed of the largest freshwater lake in China

Limited knowledge exists regarding the potential risks associated with anthropogenic release of rare earth elements (REEs) in the environment. This study aimed to investigate REE signatures in the watershed Poyang Lake, the largest freshwater lake in China. Samples of surface water, wastewater, and groundwater were collected from five rivers discharging into the lake. Results revealed wastewater from wastewater treatment plants contained total REE concentrations from 231 to 904 μg/L, exceeding those found in surface water (0.4 to 1.3 μg/L) and groundwater (0.5 to 416 μg/L). Samples with elevated REE were found in Ca-Mg-Cl/SO4 type waters and exhibited an 18OD deviation from local meteoric water line. Wastewater exhibited a higher positive Gd anomaly compared to surface water and groundwater, attributed to anthropogenic input of Gd (Gdanth). The determined Gdanth concentration ranged from 0.04 to 0.21 μg/L, and from 0.06 to 0.37 μg/L, accounting for 4 % to 21 % and 49 % to 84 % of total Gd concentrations in groundwater and surface water, respectively. Gdanth concentration in wastewater (0.19 to 0.43 μg/L) remained constant in effluent after wastewater treatment. Surface water displayed relatively complex normalized REE patterns influenced by anthropogenic activities and natural processes (weathering and complexation), while groundwater exhibited heavy REEs enrichment, due to carbonate solution complexation. Additionally, Gdanth concentration showed a positive correlation with ΣREE, Pb, Ni, and Co concentrations in groundwater, indicating a good pollution tracing potential. Health risk assessment using the hazard quotient (HQ) suggested higher HQGd values in groundwater compared to surface water. Residents in the eastern part of Poyang Lake were found to face higher risks associated with Gd in groundwater compared to the western part, with infants and children at greater risk than adult males and females. These findings offer valuable insights into environmental behavior and health risks of REEs in aquatic systems impacted by human activities.

Distribution, source and behavior of rare earth elements in surface water and sediments in a subtropical freshwater lake influenced by human activities

As tracers, rare earth elements (REEs) can reflect the influence of human activities on the environmental changes in aquatic systems. To reveal the geochemical behavior of REEs in a water-sediment system influenced by human activities, the contents of REEs in the surface water and sediment in the Chaohu Lake Basin were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results show that the ΣREE contents in the surface water are 0.10-0.850 μg L^-1, the ΣREE contents in the sediments are 71.14-210.01 μg g^-1, and the average contents are 0.24 μg L^-1 and 126.72 μg g^-1, respectively. Almost all water and sediment samples have obvious light REE (LREE) enrichment, which is the result of the input of LREE-rich substances released by natural processes and human activities (industrial and agricultural production). Under the alkaline water quality conditions of Chaohu Lake, REEs (especially LREEs) are easily removed from water by adsorption/coprecipitation reactions with suspended colloidal particles, which leads to the enrichment of LREEs in sediments. The Ce anomaly of the water-sediment system is related to the oxidation environment, while the Eu anomaly is related to the plagioclase crystallization. Significant Gd anomalies was observed in the downstream of rivers flowing through urban areas, which was related to the anthropogenic Gd wastewater discharged by hospitals. The ∑REE-δEu and provenance index (PI) discrimination results are consistent, indicating that the sediments in Chaohu Lake mainly come from rivers flowing through the southwest farmland. Furthermore, the spatial distribution of REEs shows that these tributaries are significantly affected by agricultural activities. The distribution and accumulation of REEs in Chaohu Lake are the result of the interaction of natural and human processes. The results can provide a scientific reference for the distribution and environmental behavior of REEs in aquatic environments disturbed by human beings.

Chronological deposition record of trace metals in sediment cores from Chaohu Lake, Anhui Province, China

Lakes located in the mid-low reaches of the Yangtze River watershed have been subjected to various degrees of human perturbation that would have resulted in toxic metal concentrations and would pose potential risk to the natural habitats. Therefore, in the present study, two sediment cores from Chaohu Lake were collected to determine any such concentration, expressed as the enrichment characteristics of major and trace metals (Al, Fe, Mn, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, As, Hg, and Ni) in response to natural and anthropogenic changes. An approximate 180-year (1840-2021) deposition record of trace metals in sediment cores was obtained on the basis of ¹³⁷Cs and ²¹⁰Pb dating. Enrichment factors (EFs) and the geo-accumulation index (I_geo) were adopted to evaluate the enrichment state and pollution status of trace metals. The results showed that Cu and Zn were persistently more enriched in sediment, whereas Mn, Pb, Cd, and Hg has shown remarkable increasing trends in the west lake since the 1970s. Evaluation of the I_geo confirmed that sediment was moderately polluted with Cu and Zn within the whole lake and with Cd in the west lake area, whereas it was uncontaminated with Cr and slightly contaminated with other metals. Furthermore, source identification based on multivariate statistical analysis including correlation analysis, principal component analysis, and cluster analysis suggested similar pollution sources for the studied metals. Combined with the natural and anthropogenic changes within the watershed, enhanced soil erosion due to population expansion and agricultural intensification was a major contributor to sedimentary metals before the 1970s while industrial wastewater, urban runoff, and domestic sewage were predominant inputs of trace metals after the 1970s.

Bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of organic ultraviolet absorbents in the food web of a freshwater lake: Implications for risk estimation

Organic ultraviolet absorbents (UVAs) are increasingly reported in environmental matrices and organisms. However, available information on the bioaccumulation of UVAs in freshwater species is insufficient and their trophodynamics in lake food webs remain unknown. We measured the concentrations of twelve UVAs in the wild species from Lake Chaohu. Except for UV-320 not detected, the other UVAs were prevalent in the study species and their total concentrations were in the range of 5.44-131 ng/g dry weight, which were comparable to the concentrations reported in other waters. Compound and species-specific accumulations of UVAs in the organisms were observed. In the lake, the log-transformed concentrations of 4-methyl benzylidene camphor, octyl p-dimethylaminobenzoate, UV-326, and UV-327 related significantly to the trophic levels of species separately. The calculated trophic magnification factors (TMFs) of the four UVAs were 3.79, implying trophic magnification, and 0.18, 0.40 and 0.58, suggesting trophic dilution, respectively. These suggested that the magnification potential and the associated risks of individual UVAs in freshwater lake differed. To our knowledge, this is the first report of these TMFs in lake food webs. However, more investigation is needed to characterize their trophodynamic behaviors in lakes because food web characteristics likely affect trophic transfer of these chemicals.

Pollution, ecological risk, and source identification of potentially toxic elements in sediments of a landscape urban lagoon, China

Given the great importance of Yundang lagoon (China), a detailed evaluation and source identification of multiple potentially toxic elements (PTEs) is required. Low concentrations of the PTEs were found in the Diversion canal, while high in the Main canal, Inner lagoon, and Outer lagoon. Evaluation results indicated that the pollution of PTEs was widespread, and that the extremely high eco-risks and evident toxicity were owing to the great contributions of Hg and Cd. Positive matrix factorization model demonstrated that the PTEs were from both natural and different types of anthropogenic sources. TOC played a critical role in the PTEs. It was also found that the limited environmental carrying capacity and the poor hydrological condition of the lagoon may still accumulate the pollution in a progressive fashion. These findings provide a detailed information on making effective strategies of new directions for long-term prevention of PTEs pollution in the landscape urban lagoon.

Spatial-temporal dynamics, ecological risk assessment, source identification and interactions with internal nutrients release of heavy metals in surface sediments from a large Chinese shallow lake

The surface sediment concentrations of heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, Cr, Hg, and As), major metals (Fe and Mn), and the nutrient concentrations in the interstitial water of Lake Houguan, a large eutrophic shallow lake, were surveyed for three years. The results showed that Cu, Zn, and Fe were significantly higher in the east lake parts, and Cd in November was significantly higher than April. 19% of Hg and all of As were larger than the probable effect concentrations (PECs) according to the consensus-based sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), and the geo-accumulation index (I_geo) indicated As, Hg, and Cd were slightly polluted to severely polluted. The RI value (average 704.2) of the potential ecological risk index (PERI) suggested that heavy metals posed very high ecological risks with most of the contributions induced by Cd and Hg. The consequence of hierarchical clustering analysis (HCA) and principle component analysis (PCA) identified Cd, As, and Pb might originate from urbanization, industrial pollution, and agricultural activity; Hg might be from atmospheric deposition and anthropogenic sources above; Cu, Zn, Cr, Fe, and Mn might be from both natural and anthropogenic sources. The Spearman correlation analysis indicated Pb and As were significantly positively correlated with total nitrogen, while Cd significantly negatively correlated with sulfate; As was significantly correlated with ammonia, sulfate, and nitrate in the interstitial water. These results suggested eutrophication might affect sedimental heavy metals by increasing organic matter or influencing the redox potentials in the sediment.

Effect of a tropical cyclone on the distribution of heavy metals in the marine sediments off Kameswaram, Southeast coast of India

Cyclones and heavy rainfalls are the main reasons for incessant environmental aggravation in the coastal regions and the distribution of pollutants from the contaminated terrestrial areas to the offshore regions. Twenty-five surface sediment samples were collected off Kameswaram, SE coast of India, and assessed for their geochemical and sedimentological characteristics post Cyclone Gaja. Sediment texture and various geochemical analyses were carried out to assess the metal distribution in the study area. Environmental impacts caused by heavy metal contamination in the marine sediments were assessed using different sediment pollution indices and it was found that metals such as Cu, Zn, Ni, and Co were moderately contaminated. Fe and Cr were uncontaminated to moderately contaminated, and Mn fall under the uncontaminated category. Multivariate statistical analyses revealed that the enrichment of organic-rich mud helps in entrapping the heavy metals, thus polluting the environment. Moreover, these metals were mainly derived from anthropogenic activities.

Assessment of Heavy Metals in Agricultural Land: A Literature Review Based on Bibliometric Analysis

A great amount of negative influence on human existence and environmental protection has been brought on by heavy metal pollution in agriculture soil. Thus, major awareness has been diverted to the evaluation of heavy metals (EHM) in agricultural land, which is used to improve the environment and ensure people’s health. Based on 3759 publications collected from the Web of Science Core CollectionTM (WoS), this paper’s aim is to illustrate a comprehensive bibliometric run-through and visualization of the subject of EHM. Contingent on influential authors, top institutions, keywords are discussed in detail. Afterwards, the ruling publications and focal assemblage of EHM and leading publications are analyzed to discover the main research topics, according to citation analysis and reference co-citation analysis. The main motive of the paper is to assist research workers interested in the area of EHM determine the ongoing potential research opportunities and hotspots.

Enrichment, sources and ecological risk mapping of heavy metals in agricultural soils of dhaka district employing SOM, PMF and GIS methods

Rapid urbanization and industrial growth have triggered heavy metal contamination in agricultural soil in Dhaka, which is a serious concern for ecological risk and public health issues. In this study, fifty-four soil samples from agricultural lands of Dhaka had been analyzed for assessing accumulation, spatial enrichment, ecological risk and sources apportionment of heavy metals using a combined approach of self-organizing map (SOM), positive matrix factorization (PMF), geographical information system (GIS), and enrichment factor (EF). The results of the enrichment factor, geoaccumulation index and contamination factor index showed that more than 90% of the soil samples were polluted by higher levels of Cr and Cd. The mean pollution load index (PLI) results demonstrated that about 73% of soil samples were moderately polluted by heavy metals. Based on SOM and PMF analysis, four potential sources of heavy metals were found in this study area: (i) agrochemical and sewage irrigation (Cd-As); (ii) combined effect of agriculture, industrial and natural sources (Mn, Co, Ni and Zn); (iii) atmospheric deposition and industrial emission (As-Pb); (iv) chemical and leather tanning industries (Cr). The ecological risk index demonstrated that in terms of Cd content, about 75% of soil samples were moderate to high risk, and 20% were moderate to considerable ecological risk, which was the serious environmental, ecological, and public health concern. The spatial projection of ecological risk values showed that the southern part of Dhaka (Keraniganj Upazila) is a high ecological risk in terms of heavy metal pollution. These risk maps in agricultural soils may play a vital role in reducing pollution sources; so that zonal pollution control, as well as ecological protection, may be achieved in this resource-based agricultural land.

DPSIR Model Applied to the Remediation of Contaminated Sites. A Case Study: Mar Piccolo of Taranto

The study critically analyses the complex situation of the Mar Piccolo of Taranto (South of Italy), considered one of the most polluted marine ecosystems in Europe. In order to investigate possible cause–effect relationships, useful to plan appropriate planning responses or remediation technologies to be adopted, the Driver–Pressure–State–Impact–Response (DPSIR) model was applied. Methodologically, about 100 references have been considered, whose information was organized according to the logical scheme of the DPSIR. The results showed how the Mar Piccolo is the final receptor of pollutants coming from all industrial and agricultural activities, especially due to its natural hydrogeological network conformation. The anthropic activity represents a critical impact on the ecosystem due to the subsequent marine litter. The mobility of contaminants from sediments to the water column showed the potential risk related to the bioaccumulation of organisms from different trophic levels, posing a threat of unacceptable magnitude to human safety. The paper concludes by discussing the actions currently implemented by the authorities in response to the anthropogenic impacts as well as the need for new ones concerning both plans, programs, and remediation interventions. The case study shows how the DPSIR is a useful framework to organize extensive and heterogeneous information about a complex environmental system, such as the one investigated. This preliminary organization of the available data can represent the starting point for the development of a DPSIR-based Environmental Decision Support System (EDSS) with robust cause–effect relationships.

Distribution characteristics, sources identification and risk assessment of n-alkanes and heavy metals in surface sediments, Tajikistan, Central Asia

Central Asia is the global hotspot resulting from either a scarcity of natural resources or environmental degradation. Tajikistan, however, is called the "central Asian water tower", is rich in water and minerals and plays a very important role in the ecology of Central Asia. Given the soil contamination issues in Tajikistan, the spatial distributions and sources of n-alkanes and heavy metals in surface sediments of Tajikistan were investigated. The evaluation of n-alkane and elemental indices helped to elucidate the origins of complex pollutants. The n-alkane indices were allowed to identify biogenic and petrogenic sources, and statistical methods were used to identify natural and anthropogenic sources of heavy metals. Enrichment factors were used to assess the contamination statuses of heavy metals. The results indicated that n-alkanes in the cluster I (sample 23) and II (samples 1, 5, 12, 14, 18, 22, 29, and 30) samples were affected by crude oil or incomplete fossil fuel combustion. Biomarker indices indicated strong contributions of petroleum sources to the n-alkanes in samples 14, 18, 23, and 29, but that n-alkanes in the other samples were mainly derived from higher plant waxes. Statistical analyses showed that cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn) were originated from industrial activities. Phosphorus (P) was closely related to local agricultural activities. Manganese (Mn) was derived from mining activities and industrial wastewater. The enrichment factors indicated that sediment was zero to minor contamination with Cr, Cu, Ni, and Pb, but moderate contamination with Cd and significant contamination with Zn. Interestingly, the samples contaminated with Cd included the cluster I and II samples, meaning the source of Cd contamination had agreed with the results of n-alkanes. The combined evaluation of n-alkanes and heavy metals suggested that their pollutant sources were crude oil contamination.

Characteristics and Assessment of Toxic Metal Contamination in Surface Water and Sediments Near a Uranium Mining Area

Concentrations of potentially toxic metals including Cd, Cu, Pb, Cr, U, Th in surface water and sediment samples collected from a river were analyzed to assess the contaminations, distribution characteristics, and sources of these metals. The contents of the metals were lower than the standard levels set by World Health Organization (WHO) for drinking water. However, U and Th contents were far beyond the background values of surface water. The concentrations of Cd, Cr, and U in sediments were higher than the background values and the Probable Effect Level (PEL) of sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) which may result in high potential harmful biological effects to aquatic ecosystems. Based on the contamination factor (CF), geo-accumulation index (I_geo), and potential ecological risk index (RI), Cd, Cr, and U were considered to be the metals that mainly contribute to the contamination of sediments. The calculation results also indicated that the sites adjacent to the uranium ore field were highly polluted. Results of cluster analysis, principal component analysis, and correlation analysis revealed that Cr, Pb, U, and Th were highly correlated with each other. These metals mainly originated from both anthropogenic sources and natural processes, especially emissions from uranium mining and quarrying, whereas Cd mostly came from anthropogenic sources (agricultural activities) of the upper reaches of the river.

An overview of heavy metal pollution in Chaohu Lake, China: enrichment, distribution, speciation, and associated risk under natural and anthropogenic changes

An exhaustive overview of heavy metal pollution in Chaohu Lake illustrating enrichment intensity, temporal and spatial distribution, chemical speciation, and ecological risk under natural and anthropogenic changes was conducted. Low concentrations of heavy metals excluding Hg were found in water whereas high Hg might be ascribed to surrounding coal-fired power plants. Copper, Pb, Zn, Cd, and Hg were enriched in sediment whereas Cr and Ni were comparable to background values. Besides, As demonstrated an equal accumulation from natural and anthropogenic fluxes. Heavy metals were at a low level prior to the 1950s; it increased gradually during the 1950s-1960s owing to population growth and agricultural expansion; then it displayed abrupt increase since the late 1970s due to rapid modern urbanization and industrialization and agricultural intensification. Spatial distribution of heavy metals was a good indicator of natural and anthropogenic changes, where higher enrichment was found in the western lake. Apart from fluvial input, anthropogenic disturbances such as land use changes, atmospheric deposition, and algae-derived organic matter, along with natural stressors including climate change, hydrological alteration, and soil erosion, made significant contribution to the biogeochemical cycle of heavy metals in the lake. Heavy metals mainly from anthropogenic sources were dominantly partitioned in non-residual fractions, whereas those mainly from natural sources were predominantly distributed in residual form. Mercury and Cd were below the threshold effect concentration (TEC) indicating that adverse effects were excluded. However, result of chemical speciation demonstrated Cd would pose a considerable potential ecological risk. Besides, most of the heavy metals were in the range of TEC-PEC suggesting possible toxicity.

Occurrence, Removal and Bioaccumulation of Perfluoroalkyl Substances in Lake Chaohu, China

The perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAAs) have received growing attention in recent years as emerging contaminants in the aquatic environment. The occurrence, removal and bioaccumulation of fourteen PFAAs (C4-C14 carboxylate; C4, C6, C8 sulfonates) were investigated in Lake Chaohu, China. The concentrations of the selected PFAAs in inflowing river, lake water and sewage treatment plant (STP) samples were analyzed by ultra performance liquid chromatograph (UPLC-MS/MS). The results showed that perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS), perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS), perfluorobutyric acid (PFBA) and perfluoropentanoic acid (PFPeA), instead of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), were predominant PFAAs in the inflowing river and lake water with maximum concentrations in the ranges of 52.2-1866 and 27-236 ng L^-1, respectively. The highest concentrations of total PFAAs were detected in the western rivers. The effluents from seven STPs were likely important sources of PFAAs in surface water, and the amount of the daily fluxes in the effluent were 132 g for short-chain PFAAs and 109 g for long-chain PFAAs. PFAAs were widely detected in Chinese icefish (Neosalanx tangkahkeii taihuensis) collected from Lake Chaohu, with maximal concentrations ranging from 1.79 ng g^-1 to 50.9 ng g^-1. The logarithmic bioaccumulation factors of perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA, 3.5), perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS, 3.35) and perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA, 3.31) indicated the bioaccumulation of these long-chain PFAAs. This study is useful for enhancing our understanding of the pollution profiles of PFAAs and their environmental health risk in the freshwater lake.

Distribution, bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of trace metals in the food web of Chaohu Lake, Anhui, China

Chaohu Lake is one of the five largest freshwater lakes in China situated in Anhui Province. Water, sediment and aquatic organisms were collected from Chaohu Lake. Trace metals were measured to investigate their bioaccumulation pattern and trophic transfer in the food web as well as potential health risk assessment through fish consumption. Trophic interactions were investigated by stable nitrogen isotope. Linear regression of log metal concentration versus δ¹⁵N was used to determine whether there is biomagnification or biodilution. Results showed that concentrations of trace metals in water were rather low except Hg, some of which surpassed the scope of quality standard. Trace metals in sediment exceeded background values nevertheless within the range for the protection of aquatic life. Therein, geochemical fractionation showed that Cd would pose a considerable potential ecological risk. Trace metals were higher in plankton except for Cu and Zn was higher in shrimp due to metabolic needs. Decreasing trend was observed in Pb, Cr, Cd, As and Hg levels with increasing trophic level whereas increasing trend was observed in Zn. Trace metals in fish were lower than legislation thresholds except for Cr in two samples that exceeded the threshold value. Nonetheless, total target hazard quotient values and target cancer risk were lower than unit and within acceptable range, indicating there was no health risk for inhabitants from trace metals through fish consumption.

Occurrence and risk assessment of heavy metals in water, sediment, and fish from Dongting Lake, China

In this study, 15 representative surface waters and sediments and seven typical fish were collected during the wet season in 2016 to explore the occurrence, chemical fractionation, and ecological risk of heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, Cr, Hg, As, and Ni) in aquatic ecosystems of Dongting Lake in China. In surface water, the concentrations of all elements were lower than the third grade of the surface water quality standards (GB3838-2002). The highest concentrations of Zn, Pb, Cd, Ni, and Cu were found in the outlet of Dongting Lake, whereas As and Cr were highest in the Xiangjiang River Delta area. In surface sediments, the concentration decreased in the order of Zn > Cr > Pb > Cu > Ni > As>Cd > Hg; the highest concentration of all elements, except for Hg, was located in the Xiangjiang River Delta area; for chemical fractionation, Cr, Hg, Zn, As, Ni, and Cu were mainly residual fractionation; and Pb and Cd were mainly in a reducible state and fraction soluble in acid, respectively. In fish muscle, the concentrations of all elements were lower than relevant standards; the highest concentration appeared in fish living in the middle-lower and demersal layers. As for the feeding habits of fish, the average concentration decreased in the order of carnivorous > omnivorous > herbivorous fish. The potential ecological risk and the ratio of secondary phase to primary phase assessment showed that Cd and Hg had the highest ecological risk and that Cd and Pb had a high risk of secondary release. A health risk assessment showed that drinking water and fish for consumption in urban and rural areas around Dongting Lake were in the acceptable level.

Quantitative contributions of the major sources of heavy metals in soils to ecosystem and human health risks: A case study of Yulin, China

Quantifying source-oriented risk can identify primary pollution sources to help alleviate risks to ecosystems and human health posed by soil heavy metals. Taking Yulin National Energy and Chemical Industry Base as an example, ecosystem and human health risk assessments of each identified source category were quantitatively calculated by combining the Potential Ecological Risk (RI) and Total Carcinogenic Risk (Total-CR)/Total Hazard Index (Total-HI) assessment models with the positive matrix factorization (PMF) receptor model. In this work, an analysis of the Geoaccumulation Index (I_geo), Contamination Index (P_i), RI, CR and HI of heavy metals (As, Cr, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Hg and Mn) identified universal ecosystem risks and both carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic health risks in most sites. Source apportionment results indicated that the dominant source of heavy metals in the soil was coal-related activities (52.5%), followed by industrial activities (22.0%), traffic activities (13.2%) and agricultural activities (12.3%). The source-oriented quantitative risk assessment results showed that coal-related activities are the greatest contributor to RI and Total-HI, while industrial activities are the largest source of Total-CR, which should be controlled, to reduce the carcinogenic health risk posed by exposure to heavy metals.

Anthropogenic Impact and Ecological Risk Assessment of Thallium and Cobalt in Poyang Lake Using the Geochemical Baseline

As the largest freshwater lake in China, water environmental pollution in Poyang Lake is increasingly attracting attention. However, to date, the occurrence of seldom-monitored trace elements (SMTEs) (such as thallium (Tl) and cobalt (Co)) and their potential ecological influences in the Poyang Lake area remain unclear. Here, geochemical baseline concentrations (GBCs) were employed to investigate anthropogenic inputs of these two metals (Tl and Co) and were used to assess the potential ecological risk in surface sediments of Poyang Lake. The results showed that the mean concentrations of Tl and Co were 1.11 mg/kg and 15.42 mg/kg, respectively, slightly higher than background values (BVs) in local soil. Spatially, the Co concentrations in surface sediments of Poyang Lake varied; Co concentrations in the west of the study area were significantly lower than in the middle of the lake. In contrast, no significant spatial variation of Tl was found in studied areas of Poyang Lake. Average GBCs were similar to the mean measured concentrations of Tl and Co in the lake, and both were higher than the BVs in local soil. In anthropogenic source analysis based on the GBCs, 47.22% samples and 41.67% samples were influenced by human activity for Tl and Co, respectively; the mean anthropogenic contribution rate was 5.90% for Tl (0.43 to 16.22%), and 13.01% for Co (0.82 to 31.59%). These results indicated that Tl and Co mainly originate from natural processes. However, the anthropogenic contribution should not be ignored. Moreover, the geo-accumulation index (Igeo) and potential ecological parameter (Er) generally indicated no contamination and a low potential risk for Tl and Co in Poyang Lake sediments, which used the GBCs as BVs. The results of this study suggest that GBCs are more scientifically robust and practical as a reference than BVs. They can also be used when BVs are lacking.

Impact of O3 or O3/H2O2 treatment via a membrane contacting system on the composition and characteristics of the natural organic matter of surface waters

The present study aims to evaluate changes in the structure-composition of natural organic matter (NOM) that occur after the application of bubbleless ozonation or peroxone treatment of surface waters. The oxidation experiments (using 0.5-2 mg O3/mg DOC, or 2:1 O₃:H₂O₂ molar ratio) were performed in a continuous mode, using a tubular ceramic membrane contactor. Fluorescence spectroscopy (emission-excitation matrix) and liquid chromatography-organic carbon detection (LC-OCD) were mainly used for the detailed DOC characterization. In brief, the application of single ozonation resulted to high reduction of humic-like peak fluorescence intensities (50-85%) and also to the formation of two new peaks in the region of protein-like components. The co-addition of H₂O₂ did not present the anticipated increase in the reduction of fluorescence intensity; however, it resulted to the further oxidation of protein-like fluorophores. LC-OCD measurements confirmed the decrease of average molecular weight of NOM during ozone treatment, due to the gradual degradation of biopolymers (14-23%) and humic substances (11-17%) towards building blocks and low molecular weight (LMW) neutrals. Advanced oxidation process (AOP) treatment by the mixture O₃/H₂O₂ resulted in the simultaneous decrease of building blocks and LMW neutral concentrations. Conventional batch ozonation and AOP experiments were conducted using ozone-saturated solutions to investigate the effect of different contacting patterns. The results revealed that the different reaction pathways followed during bubbleless and conventional batch experiments may also influence the formation of NOM oxidation intermediates.

Polychlorinated biphenyls in the Yellow River of Henan section: occurrence, composition, and impact factors

The levels, spatial variation, congener profiles, impact factors, and ecological risk of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the sediment from the Yellow River of Henan section, China, were investigated in this paper. Total concentration of 31 PCBs and seven indicator PCBs varied from ND to 1015 pg g^-1 and ND to 423 pg g^-1, respectively. Compared with other aquatic environments around China, PCB levels in the studied area were relatively low. Spatial variations revealed that tributaries possessed higher PCB levels, in comparison to mainstream, which acted as input sources of PCBs in the mainstream. The homolog profiles were dominated by lighter PCBs (Tri-PentaCBs), contributing above 70% of total PCBs. Correlation analysis between PCB concentrations and total organic carbon indicated that local input or atmospheric deposition was the primary controls of spatial variation of PCBs. According to simple sediment quality guidelines (SQG), the risks posed by PCBs in the sediments might be negligible.

Heavy metal pollution in immobile and mobile components of lentic ecosystems-a review

With growing population and urbanization, there is an increasing exploitation of natural resources, and this often results to environmental pollution. In this review, the levels of heavy metal in lentic compartments (water, sediment, fishes, and aquatic plants) over the past two decades (1997-2017) have been summarized to evaluate the current pollution status of this ecosystem. In all the compartments, the heavy metals dominated are zinc followed by iron. The major reason could be area mineralogy and lithogenic sources. Enormous quantity of metals like iron in estuarine sediment is a very natural incident due to the permanently reducing condition of organic substances. Contamination of cadmium, lead, and chromium was closely associated with anthropogenic origin. In addition, surrounding land use and atmospheric deposition could have been responsible for substantial pollution. The accumulation of heavy metals in fishes and aquatic plants is the result of time-dependent deposition in lentic ecosystems. Moreover, various potential risk assessment methods for heavy metals were discussed. This review concludes that natural phenomena dominate the accumulation of essential heavy metals in lentic ecosystems compared to anthropogenic sources. Amongst other recent reviews on heavy metals from other parts of the world, the present review is executed in such a way that it explains the presence of heavy metals not only in water environment, but also in the whole of the lentic system comprising sediment, fishes, and aquatic plants.

Spatial distributions, fractionation characteristics, and ecological risk assessment of trace elements in sediments of Chaohu Lake, a large eutrophic freshwater lake in eastern China

The concentrations, spatial distribution, fractionation characteristics, and potential ecological risks of trace elements (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Ni, and Co) in the surface sediment samples collected from 32 sites in Chaohu Lake were investigated. The improved BCR sequential extraction procedure was applied to analyze the chemical forms of trace elements in sediments. The enrichment factor (EF), sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), potential ecological risk index (PERI), and risk assessment code (RAC) were employed to evaluate the pollution levels and the potential ecological risks. The results found that the concentrations of Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Ni, and Co in the surface sediments were 78.59, 36.91, 161.84, 98.87, 38.92, and 10.09 mg kg^-1, respectively. The lower concentrations of Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, and Ni were almost found in the middle part of the lake, while Co increased from the western toward the eastern parts of the lake. Cr, Ni, Co, and Zn predominantly existed in the residual fractions, with the average values of 76.35, 59.22, 45.60, and 44.30%, respectively. Cu and Pb were mainly combined with Fe/Mn oxides in reducible fraction, with the average values of 66.4 and 69.1%, respectively. The pollution levels were different among the selected elements. Cu had the highest potential ecological risk, while Cr had the lowest potential ecological risk.

Levels and risk assessment of metals in sediment and fish from Chaohu Lake, Anhui Province, China

Chaohu Lake is the fifth largest freshwater lake in China, which tolerates substantial amount of anthropogenic discharge from surrounding cities that resulting in the degradation of water and damage of aquatic ecosystem. Metal analysis of sediment and aquatic organisms can provide important information on the environmental contamination and potential impact of aquatic food consumption. Thus, the concentrations of Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, As, and Hg in sediment and fish from Chaohu Lake were analyzed with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and atomic fluorescence spectrometry. The mean content of Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, As, and Hg in the sediment samples were 27.4 ± 6.3, 40.5 ± 12.3, 136.8 ± 65.5, 68.5 ± 9.1, 0.357 ± 0.141, 10.8 ± 1.7, and 0.117 ± 0.049 mg/kg, respectively. The results were compared with background values and evaluation methods, to characterize the potential ecological risk. The concentrations of Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd, As, and Hg in the fish muscle samples were 1.68-5.31, 0.078-0.31, 15.55-372.98, 0.31-0.93, 0.001-0.033, 0.29-1.03, and 0.04-0.197 mg kg^-1 of dry mass, respectively. Most of the concentrations of the studied metals in muscles were found to be below the safe limits; however, the concentration of inorganic As (10% of total As) in two specimens exceeded the maximum allowance in fish. The ecological risk evaluation showed that the metals in sediment posed low to medium risk. The health risk assessment suggested that the consumption of fish from Chaohu Lake is currently safe with respect to the metals.

Polychlorinated biphenyls and organochlorine pesticides in Tiber River and Estuary: Occurrence, distribution and ecological risk

The polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) pollution in the Tiber River and its environmental impact on the Tyrrhenian Sea (Central Mediterranean Sea) were estimated. 32 PCBs and 17 OCPs (aldrin, α-BHC, β-BHC, δ-BHC, lindane, p,p'-DDD, p,p'-DDE, p,p'-DDT, dieldrin, endosulfan I, endosulfan II, endosulfan sulfate, endrin, endrin aldehyde, heptachlor, heptachlor epoxide, methoxychlor) were determined in the water dissolved phase (DP), suspended particulate matter (SPM) and sediment samples. Total concentrations of PCBs ranged from 0.54 to 74.75ngL(-1) in water (sum of DP and SPM) and from 3.73 to 79.30ngg(-1) dry weigh in sediment samples; while the concentrations of total OCPs collected in water (sum of DP and SPM) ranged from 0.07 to 7.04ngL(-1) and from 0.66 to 10.02ngg(-1) dry weigh in sediment samples. Contaminant discharges into the sea were calculated in about 227.08kgyear(-1) for PCBs and 24.91kgyear(-1) for OCPs, showing that this river should account as one of the main contribution sources of PCBs and OCPs to the Tyrrhenian Sea. The ∑TEQPCB from the sediment samples ranged from 0.0006 to 0.37ngg(-1) with an average level of 0.13ngg(-1). Based on Sediments Quality Guidelines, biological adverse effects on aquatic ecosystem were rare to occasional for PCB and OCP levels in Tiber water system.
