Effective removal of ammonia nitrogen from waste seawater using crystal seed enhanced struvite precipitation technology with response surface methodology for process optimization

Determination of operation parameters for magnesium-air fuel cell to recover nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater

Recovering phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) from wastewater not only contributes to environmental protection but also aligns with sustainable development goals. This study employed a magnesium-air fuel cell (Mg-O2-FC) to extract P and N from wastewater in the form of struvite (MgNH4·6H2O), based on the removal efficiency of ammonia and phosphate, electricity generation capacity and struvite purity to determine the optimal operation parameters. These parameters included hydraulic retention time (HRT), service life of magnesium sheet, and precipitation discharge frequency. The results showed that the removal efficiency of ammonia from 0 to 4h was 55.99%, and that from 4 to 12h was only 15.74%. The phosphate removal efficiency in the initial cycle was 97.68% but decreased to 63.25% after 24h. The phosphate removal rate in 2 min increased by 145% when the precipitation discharge frequency increased from 4 h/time to 24 h/time. Consequently, the HRT, service life of the magnesium sheet, and precipitation discharge frequency were selected as 4 h, 24 h, and 24 h/time. These optimized conditions provide valuable insights for the practical implementation of Mg-O2-FC in recovering N and P from wastewater.

Application of physicochemical techniques to the removal of ammonia nitrogen from water: a systematic review

Ammonia nitrogen is a common pollutant in water and soil, known for its biological toxicity and complex removal process. Traditional biological methods for removing ammonia nitrogen are often inefficient, especially under varying temperature conditions. This study reviews physicochemical techniques for the treatment and recovery of ammonia nitrogen from water. Key methods analyzed include ion exchange, adsorption, membrane separation, struvite precipitation, and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Findings indicate that these methods not only remove ammonia nitrogen but also allow for nitrogen recovery. Ion exchange, adsorption, and membrane separation are effective in separating ammonia nitrogen, while AOPs generate reactive species for efficient degradation. Struvite precipitation offers dual benefits of removal and resource recovery. Despite their advantages, these methods face challenges such as secondary pollution and high energy consumption. This paper highlights the development principles, current challenges, and future prospects of physicochemical techniques, emphasizing the need for integrated approaches to enhance ammonia nitrogen removal efficiency.

Heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification characteristics of the psychrotolerant Pseudomonas peli NR-5 at low temperatures

The nitrogen removal efficiency of heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification (HN-AD) bacteria can be seriously inhibited at low temperatures (< 15 °C). A novel psychrotolerant bacterium, Pseudomonas peli NR-5 (P. peli NR-5), with efficient HN-AD capability was isolated and screened from river sediments in cold areas. When P. peli NR-5 was aerobically cultivated for 60 h at 10 °C with NH₄⁺-N, NO₃^--N, and NO₂^--N as the sole nitrogen sources (N 105 mg/L), the nitrogen removal efficiencies were 97.3, 95.3, and 87.8%, respectively, without nitrite accumulation, and the corresponding average nitrogen removal rates were 1.71, 1.67, and 1.55 mg/L/h, respectively. Meanwhile, P. peli NR-5 exhibited excellent simultaneous nitrification and denitrification capabilities at 10 °C. Sodium succinate was the most favorable carbon substrate for bacterial growth and ammonia removal by strain NR-5. The optimal culture conditions determined by the response surface methodology model were a carbon to nitrogen ratio of 5.9, temperature of 11.5 °C, pH of 7.0, and shaking speed of 144 rpm. Under these conditions, 99.1% of the total nitrogen was removed in the verification experiments, which was not significantly different from the predicted maximum removal in the model (99.6%). Six functional genes participating in the HN-AD process were successfully obtained by polymerase chain reaction amplification, which further confirmed the HN-AD capability of P. peli NR-5 and proposed the metabolic pathway of HN-AD. The above results provide a theoretical background of psychrotolerant HN-AD bacteria in wastewater purification under low-temperature conditions.

Nutrient released characteristics of struvite-biochar fertilizer produced from concentrated sludge supernatant by fluidized bed reactor

With the exacerbating water eutrophication globally, it is important to recover nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from sewage for recycle. In this study, coconut shell biochar and ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) were added into the designed fluidized bed reactor (FBR) to create struvite-biochar. N and P released from struvite-biochar and the recovery efficiency of N and P from concentrated sludge supernatant were analyzed. Results showed that the optimal operation condition for hydraulic retention time (HRT), pH, Mg/P molar ration, and addition amount EDTA were 90 min, 9.5, 1.2, and 0.2 g/L, respectively. The recovery efficiency of NH₄⁺-N and PO₄^3--P, and purity struvite for FBR were 34.41%-38.05%, 64.95-68.40%, and 84.15%, respectively. The recovery efficiency of NH₄⁺-N and PO₄^3--P were respectively increased by 7.23% and 5.36% when FBR with addition of 0.33 g/L coconut shell biochar, but purity struvite from struvite-biochar decreased by 45.70%. Contents of As, Cd, Pb, and Cr in struvite and struvite-biochar were all lower than Chinese Standard Limits of Fertilizer. Compared to commercial chemical fertilizer, such as superphosphate and urea, struvite-biochar and struvite have slowly released N and P. The amounts of released P, NO₃^--N and NH₄⁺-N from struvite-biochar were higher than struvite during the five leaching times. Compared with struvite, the total amounts of released P, NO₃^--N and NH₄⁺-N from struvite-biochar increased by 4.9%, 3.5% and 8.3%, respectively. Therefore, it is valuable to add biochar into FBR to recovery N and P from concentrated sludge supernatant and make struvite-biochar as a slow-release fertilizer.

Evaluation of Virucidal Efficacy of Human Norovirus Using Combined Sprayed Slightly Acidic Electrolyzed Water and Ultraviolet C-Light-Emitting Diode Irradiation Treatment Based on Optimized Capture Assay for Quantitative RT-qPCR

Slightly acidic electrolyzed water (SAEW), an effective non-thermal virucidal treatment, is used widely to prevent infectious viral cross-contamination. Surface disinfection technologies using ultraviolet C-light-emitting diode (UVC-LED) irradiation have recently attracted considerable attention. The SAEW sprayer technique is an efficient approach to preventing the spread of infectious viral pathogens in the public healthcare sector. Therefore, we investigated a small-scale system comprising sprayed SAEW disinfection combined with UVC-LED irradiation to inactivate the human norovirus (HuNoV) in the environment. A stainless-steel surface was inoculated with a HuNoV genogroup II genotype 4 (GII.4) to achieve maximum reduction values of 3.21 log10 genomic copies. For optimal disinfection conditions, the response surface methodology based on the Box–Behnken design revealed that the specific treatment conditions for inactivation of HuNoV GII.4 were an SAEW droplet volume of 180 μL, 30 ppm available chlorine concentration of SAEW, and a UVC-LED exposure dose of 2 mJ/cm². The results indicate that the combined disinfection treatment could efficiently prevent the spread of HuNoVs in environment. Furthermore, the quadratic polynomial equations of the 3-D response surface can be employed to predict the effects of combined disinfection treatment on HuNoV contamination on environmental surfaces. Therefore, sprayed SAEW disinfection combined with UVC-LED irradiation proposed in this study may offer insights for designing optimal control strategies and techniques to prevent the transmission of infectious diseases, particularly HuNoV.

Crystal seed-enhanced ammonia nitrogen and phosphate recovery from landfill leachate using struvite precipitation technique

Nitrogen and phosphorous are limiting and crucial elements for all living organisms. The recovery of nitrogen and phosphorous as struvite gained attention due to its ecofriendly fertilizer application. In the present study, feasible recovery of NH₄⁺ -N available in the landfill leachate with addition of economically viable waste resources like sewage sludge and Mg²⁺ source as struvite is investigated. However, the fertilizer application of struvite depends upon its purity, which in turn is influenced by pH, molar ratio, and presence of other ions. Laboratory scale studies are conducted to find optimum pH and molar ratio. The results of the studies demonstrated the optimum pH being 9.5 along with PO₄^3- -P: Mg²⁺: NH₄⁺ -N molar ratio of 1:1.3:1 is the best condition for struvite formation. To further augment the struvite precipitation kaolinite seed is added to the solution and optimized seed dose is 20 g/L. Existence of Ca²⁺ and Na⁺ ions in the solution exhibits a negative impact on struvite precipitation. Response surface methodology is employed to understand the interactive influence of parameters on recovery efficiency. The recovered precipitate consists of 82.5% struvite with PO₄^3- -P: Mg²⁺: NH₄⁺ -N ratio 1:1.1:0.9. Also, bioavailability of PO₄^3- -P in the recovered precipitate is 89.3%; this signifies high performance of precipitate as fertilizer. Economic assessment highlights that the struvite production is profitable and the profit gained is 159.5$/m³.

The Recovery of Phosphate and Ammonium from Biogas Slurry as Value-Added Fertilizer by Biochar and Struvite Co-Precipitation

Biowaste materials could be considered a renewable source of fertilizer if methods for recovering P from waste can be developed. Over the last few decades, there has been a high level of interest in using biochar to remove contaminants from aqueous solutions. This study was conducted using a range of salts that are commonly found in biogas slurry (ZnCl2, FeCl3, FeCl2, CuCl2, Na2CO3, and NaHCO3). Experiments with a biogas digester and aqueous solution were conducted at pH nine integration with NH4+, Mg2+, and PO43− molar ratios of 1.0, 1.2, and 1.8, respectively. The chemical analysis was measured to find out the composition of the precipitate, and struvite was employed to remove the aqueous solutions. The study found that the most efficient removal of phosphate and ammonium occurred at pH nine in Tongan sludge urban biochar and rice biochar, respectively. Increasing the concentration of phosphate and ammonium increased the phosphate and ammonium content. Moreover, increasing the biochar temperature and increasing the concentration of phosphate and ammonium increased the efficiency of the removal of ammonium and phosphate. The removal efficiency of ammonium and phosphate increased from 15.0% to 71.0% and 18.0% to 99.0%, respectively, by increasing the dose of respective ions K+, Zn2+, Fe3+, Fe2+, Cu2+, and CO32.The elements were increased from 58.0 to 71.0 for HCO3− with the increasing concentration from 30 mg L−1 to 240 mg L−1.This study concluded that phosphate and ammonium can be recovered from mushroom soil biochar and rice biochar, and phosphate can be effectively recovered via the struvite precipitation method.

Technologies for biological removal and recovery of nitrogen from wastewater

Water contamination is a growing environmental issue. Several harmful effects on human health and the environment are attributed to nitrogen contamination of water sources. Consequently, many countries have strict regulations on nitrogen compound concentrations in wastewater effluents. Wastewater treatment is carried out using energy- and cost-intensive biological processes, which convert nitrogen compounds into innocuous dinitrogen gas. On the other hand, nitrogen is also an essential nutrient. Artificial fertilizers are produced by fixing dinitrogen gas from the atmosphere, in an energy-intensive chemical process. Ideally, we should be able to spend less energy and chemicals to remove nitrogen from wastewater and instead recover a fraction of it for use in fertilizers and similar applications. In this review, we present an overview of various technologies of biological nitrogen removal including nitrification, denitrification, anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox), as well as bioelectrochemical systems and microalgal growth for nitrogen recovery. We highlighted the nitrogen removal efficiency of these systems at different temperatures and operating conditions. The advantages, practical challenges, and potential for nitrogen recovery of different treatment methods are discussed.

Influences of organic nitrogen on the removal of inorganic nitrogen from complicated marine aquaculture water by Marichromatium gracile YL28

The sediment-water interface is not only an important location for substrate conversion in a mariculture system, but also a major source of eutrophication. This study aimed to clarify the characteristics of inorganic nitrogen (ammonia, nitrite and nitrate) removal by Marichromatium gracile YL28 in the presence of both organic nitrogen and inorganic nitrogen. The results showed that, in the presence of peptone or urea, seaweed oligosaccharides (SOS) effectively enhanced the ammonia removal capacity of YL28 (6.42 mmol/L) and decreased the residual rate by 54.04% or 8.17%, respectively. With increasing peptone or urea concentrations, the removal of both ammonia and nitrate was gradually inhibited, and the residual rates of ammonia and nitrate reached 22.56-34.36% and 12.03-15.64% in the peptone system and 20.65-24.03% and 12.20-13.21% in the urea system, respectively. However, in the control group the residual rates of ammonia and nitrate reached 11.97% and 5.12%, respectively. In addition, the concentrations of peptone and urea did not affect nitrite removal, and YL28 displayed better cell growth and nitrogen removal activity in the presence of bait and SOS. Overall, the ability of YL28 to remove inorganic nitrogen was enhanced in the presence of organic nitrogen.

Exploring the effect of a peptide additive on struvite formation and morphology: a high-throughput method

Precipitation of struvite (MgNH₄PO₄·6H₂O), a slow-release fertilizer, provides a means of recycling phosphate from wastewater streams. In this work, a high-throughput struvite precipitation method is developed to investigate the effects of a peptide additive. The reactions occurred in small volumes (300 μL or less) in a 96-well plate for 45 minutes. The formation of struvite was monitored by fitting absorbance at 600 nm over time to a first order model with induction time, with the addition of peptide inducing significant changes to the yield parameter and formation constant in that model. The impact of struvite seed dosing was also investigated, highlighting the importance of optimization when peptide is present. The composition of the precipitate was confirmed through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, while morphology and crystal size were analyzed through optical microscopy. Crystals had a higher aspect ratio when precipitated with the peptide. Finally, the utility of the high-throughput platform was demonstrated with a 2⁵ full factorial design to capture the effects and interactions of: magnesium dose, mixing time, seed dose, pH, and temperature. Overall, this study quantifies novel effects of a sequence-defined peptide on struvite formation and morphology via a newly developed high throughput platform.

A full-scale survey of sludge landfill: sludge properties, leachate characteristics and microbial community structure

In this study, a full-scale survey was conducted of a sludge landfill that had been sealed for 10 years to investigate sludge properties, leachate characteristics and microbial community structure. Vertical distribution of sludge and leachate pollutants in the landfill site showed that the sludge and soluble pollutants in the leachate were both distributed almost evenly even after long-term anaerobic digestion, and higher concentrations of soluble pollutants and richness of microbial community were observed at the middle layer. Compared to dewatered excess sludge generated from the activated sludge process before landfill, landfill sludge had a much lower organic content (28.1%), smaller particle size and worse dewaterability. Compared to municipal waste landfill, sludge landfill generated leachate with a lower concentration of organic substances, and comparable concentrations of nitrogenous and phosphorus pollutants. Bacterial community analysis by Illumina MiSeq sequencing showed that Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Chloroflexi, Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes were the major phyla, and some new genera (Methylocystaceae, Mariniphaga and Aminicenantes) were enriched in the sludge landfill. Archaeal community analysis showed that aceticlastic methanogenesis by Methanosaeta and Methanosarcina was the main pathway for methane production in the sludge landfill, in contrast to waste landfill with hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis as the main pathway.

Application of MgO-modified palygorskite for nutrient recovery from swine wastewater: effect of pH, ions, and organic acids

In this study, MgO-modified palygorskite (MgO-PAL) was used for simultaneous recovery of ammonia nitrogen (AN) and phosphate, and the effects of pH, ions, and organic acids on nutrient recovery were investigated. The highest removal amount of AN and phosphate separately reached 42.6 mg/g and 69.8 mg/g at pH of 9.0, 0.6 g/L dosage of modified palygorskite, and 180 min of the reaction time. MgO-PAL provided a wide range of pH (3-9) for nutrient removal. Mg released concentration was tested to investigate the removal mechanisms. The individual presence of four cations (K⁺, Ca²⁺, Na⁺, and Mg²⁺) showed negative effect on AN removal at different mass concentrations. However, those cations, except Na⁺, exhibited positive influence on phosphate removal. Compared with SO₄^2-, CO₃^2-showed more negative effect on nutrient removal due to the reaction between Mg²⁺ and CO₃^2-. The results showed that the nutrient removal amount and the morphology and composition of collected products were not affected in the presence of acetic acid. Citric acid, humic acid, and fulvic acid displayed the inhibition effects on the morphology of the crystallized products.

Nutrient removal from digested swine wastewater by combining ammonia stripping with struvite precipitation

Typical biological processing is often challenging for removing ammonia nitrogen and phosphate from swine wastewater due to inhibition of high ammonia on activity of microorganisms, exhaustion of time, and low efficiency. In this study, a physicochemical process by combining ammonia stripping with struvite precipitation has been tested to simultaneously remove ammonia nitrogen, phosphate, and chemical oxygen demand (COD) from digested swine wastewater (DSW) with high efficiency, low cost, and environmental friendliness. The pH, temperature, and magnesium content of DSW are the key factors for ammonia removal and phosphate recovery through combining stripping with struvite precipitation. MgO was used as the struvite precipitant for NH₄⁺ and PO₄^3- and as the pH adjusted for air stripping of residual ammonia under the condition of 40 °C and 0.48 m³ h^-1 L^-1 aeration rate for 3 h. The results showed that the removal efficiency of ammonia, total phosphate, and COD from DSW significantly increased with increase of MgO dosage due to synergistic action of ammonia stripping and struvite precipitation. Considering the processing cost and national discharge standard for DSW, 0.75 g L^-1 MgO dosage was recommended using the combining technology for nutrient removal from DSW. In addition, 88.03% NH₄⁺-N and 96.07% TP could be recovered from DSW by adsorption of phosphoric acid and precipitation of magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP). The combined technology could effectively remove and recover the nutrients from DSW to achieve environmental protection and sustainable and renewable resource of DSW. An economic analysis showed that the combining technology for nutrient removal from DSW was feasible.
