Magnetic ethylene diamine-functionalized graphene oxide as novel sorbent for removal of lead and cadmium ions from wastewater samples

Employing a magnetic chitosan/molybdenum disulfide nanocomposite for efficiently removing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from milk samples

This study aimed to develop a highly efficient nanocomposite composed of magnetic chitosan/molybdenum disulfide (CS/MoS2/Fe3O4) for the removal of three polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)-pyrene, anthracene, and phenanthrene. Novelty was introduced through the innovative synthesis procedure and the utilization of magnetic properties for enhanced adsorption capabilities. Additionally, the greenness of chitosan as a sorbent component was emphasized, highlighting its biodegradability and low environmental impact compared to traditional sorbents. Factors influencing PAH adsorption, such as nanocomposite dosage, initial PAH concentration, pH, and contact time, were systematically investigated and optimized. The results revealed that optimal removal efficiencies were attained at an initial PAH concentration of 150 mg/L, a sorbent dose of 0.045 g, pH 6.0, and a contact time of 150 min. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model exhibited superior fitting to the experimental data, indicating an equilibrium time of approximately 150 min. Moreover, the equilibrium adsorption process followed the Freundlich isotherm model, with kf and n values exceeding 7.91 mg/g and 1.20, respectively. Remarkably, the maximum absorption capacities for phenanthrene, anthracene, and pyrene on the sorbent were determined as 217 mg/g, 204 mg/g, and 222 mg/g, respectively. These findings underscore the significant potential of the CS/MoS2/Fe3O4 nanocomposite for efficiently removing PAHs from milk and other dairy products, thereby contributing to improved food safety and public health.

Modeling sunset yellow removal from fruit juice samples by a novel chitosan-nickel ferrite nano sorbent

Analysis of food additives is highly significant in the food industry and directly related to human health. This investigation into the removal efficiency of sunset yellow as an azo dye in fruit juices using Chitosan-nickel ferrite nanoparticles (Cs@NiFe2O4 NPs). The nanoparticles were synthesized and characterized using various techniques. The effective parameters for removing sunset yellow were optimized using the response surface methodology (RSM) based on the central composite design (CCD). Under the optimum conditions, the highest removal efficiency (94.90%) was obtained for the initial dye concentration of 26.48 mg L-1 at a pH of 3.87, a reaction time of 67.62 min, and a nanoparticle dose of 0.038 g L-1. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model had a better fit for experimental data (R2 = 0.98) than the other kinetic models. The equilibrium adsorption process followed the Freundlich isotherm model with a maximum adsorption capacity of 212.766 mg g-1. The dye removal efficiency achieved for industrial and traditional fruit juice samples (91.75% and 93.24%), respectively, confirmed the method's performance, feasibility, and efficiency. The dye adsorption efficiency showed no significant decrease after five recycling, indicating that the sorbent has suitable stability in practical applications. variousThe synthesized nanoparticles can be suggested as an efficient sorbent to remove the sunset yellow dye from food products.

Simultaneous removal of four aflatoxins using magnetic nanobentonite as a green and fast sorbent: kinetic, thermodynamic, and isotherm investigation

In the study, an adsorptive removal strategy as a straightforward and fast procedure was developed to remove four aflatoxins, including aflatoxin B1 (AF-B1), aflatoxin B2 (AF-B2), aflatoxin G1 (AF-G1), and aflatoxin G2 (AF-G2). A simple and green sorbent consisting of two components (activated nanobentonite and Fe3O4 nanoparticles) was synthesized based on three steps using acidic treatment, ultrasonic procedure, and chemical precipitation method. The sorbent was characterized by several techniques such as FTIR, FESEM, TEM, XRD, and VSM to determine the sorbent structure and morphology. An experimental design based on a central composite design was utilized to optimize factors in the removal of AFs. The optimum values of the factors (pH, sorbent amount, shaking rate) were 6.8, 0.076 g, and 160 rpm, respectively. Three models, including pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intra-particle diffusion models, were used to investigate the kinetics of the removal process. The removal of AFs using magnetic nanobentonite was fitted with the pseudo-second-order model better than other models with an equilibrium time lower than 30 min. The thermodynamic data show that the adsorption of AFs on the sorbent is a spontaneous and feasible process due to negative values of the Gibbs-free energy change (ΔG) at different temperatures. Two models (Langmuir and Freundlich models) were chosen to study the isotherm of the removal procedure, indicating that the Freundlich model describes the results better than the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacity of the sorbent for removing AF-B1, AF-B2, AF-G1, and AF-G2 is 357.14, 400.0, 370.37, and 400.0 mg g-1, respectively. The sorbent reusability was also evaluated to study the sorbent's ability for the removal of AFs, indicating that the sorbent was used for 5 cycles without a significant reduction in the ability to remove AFs.

Enhanced remediation of lead (II) and cadmium (II) ions from aqueous media using porous magnetic nanocomposites - A comprehensive review on applications and mechanism

Lead and Cadmium, identified as toxic heavy metals, cause significant imbalance in the eco-system due to their tendency to bioaccumulate. Remediation of heavy metals by conventional adsorptive materials suffer demerits related to low efficiency or removal. Among the variety of adsorbent materials used in the adsorption process, metal oxides- and graphene oxide magnetic nanocomposites have gained a considerable attention. The use of nanomaterials may help to reduce this contamination, but after use, they are difficult to remove from water. An added magnetic property to nanomaterials facilitates their retrieval after use. The magnetic properties of these hybrid magnetic nanocomposites, coupled with unique characteristics of organic and inorganic elements, have found extensive application in water treatment technology. Detailed discussion on functionalisation of magnetic nanocomposites and the enhanced performance are presented. Magnetic graphene oxide-covalently functionalized-tryptophan was reported to have the highest adsorption capacity of 766.1 mg/g for remediation of lead (II) ions and graphene oxide exhibited the highest adsorption capacity of 530 mg/g for Cd (II) ions. The adsorption mechanisms for heavy metal ions on the surface of novel adsorbents, particularly lead and cadmium, using magnetic nanocomposites have been explained with reference to the isotherm models studied. The future scope of research in this area of research is proposed.

Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Functionalized with Hydroxamic Acid Derivatives for the Removal of Lead from Wastewater: Kinetics, Isotherm, and Thermodynamic Studies

Hydroxamic acids are recognized chelators for various metals; however, using them as functional groups on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is rare. In this study, novel multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) functionalized with hydroxamic acid derivatives were developed. The MWCNTs were first oxidized, and the resulting product, MWCNT-COOH (A), was treated with oxalyl chloride to yield MWCNT-COCl. The functionalized MWCNTs were susceptible to reacting with the hydroxylamine derivatives of type R–NHOH and produced MWCNTs functionalized with the following hydroxamic acid derivatives (MWCNT-HA): MWCNT-CONOHMe (B), MWCNT-CONOHCOMe(C), and MWCNT-CONOHPh (D). The synthesized derivatives were confirmed by various techniques such as scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. In order to examine their chelation ability, these materials were examined as possible new adsorbents for harmful Pb(II) particles. The adsorption efficiency of the functionalized MWCNT adsorbents toward Pb(II) was investigated. The effects of the adsorbent dose, temperature, pH, and time on adsorption efficiency were considered, and adsorption boundaries that resulted in enhanced effectiveness were obtained. The developed materials were found to have extraordinary coordination sites, such as amine, hydroxyl, and carboxyl groups, which served as excellent chelating specialists for the Pb(II) particles. Thermodynamic and kinetic investigations revealed the unconstrained nature of the adsorption of Pb(II) by the developed MWCNT adsorbents at room temperature. The adsorption was noted to follow the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isotherm models.

A Double cross-linked strategy to construct graphene aerogels with highly efficient methylene blue adsorption performance

A novel lysine and EDA double cross-linked graphene aerogel (LEGA) was constructed. The prepared LEGA was utilized as a methylene blue (MB) adsorbent in the wastewater treatment. It exhibits a three-dimensional interconnected porous structure benefiting dye adsorption. Its compression property is highly enhanced with the addition of lysine. Adsorption isotherm and kinetics of MB onto LEGA were discussed. Their results show that MB adsorption onto LEGA was fitted to follow Langmuir adsorption isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. LEGA has an excellent adsorption capacity towards MB as high as 332.23 mg/g and its MB adsorption process is proved to be an exothermic process. The mechanism for MB adsorption onto LEGA was proposed as the ion exchange, electrostatic interaction, π-π stacking interaction and hydrogen bonding. Thus, LEGA is confirmed to be a sustainable and green MB adsorbent with highly removal efficiency in the treatment of wastewater.

Lead ion adsorption on functionalized sugarcane bagasse prepared by concerted oxidation and deprotonation

Targeting the removal of Pb²⁺ in wastewater, sugarcane bagasse was treated with nitric acid and an alkaline solution to prepare adsorbents. On a typical adsorbent, the adsorption isotherms agreed well with the Langmuir expression, and the maximum adsorption capacity reached 200.3 mg/g. In the presence of 150 ppm Ca²⁺, a common cation in natural water, the Pb²⁺ adsorption capacity slightly declined. In contrast, Mg²⁺ obviously prohibited the adsorption for Pb²⁺. The spent adsorbent could be regenerated at least five times through elution with an EDTA solution. EDS and XPS results demonstrated that nitric acid functioned as an oxidant instead of nitrification agent in the treatment of bagasse. The adsorption process was consistent with quasi-second-order kinetics. Based on thermodynamic studies, the changes in enthalpy and Gibbs free energy were calculated to be - 33.3 and ca. - 18 kJ/mol, indicating that the adsorption process was exothermic and spontaneous. The equilibrium Pb²⁺ adsorption amounts were proportional to the numbers of carboxylate groups on different adsorbents. The binding energies of Pd 4f_5/2 and Pd 4f_7/2 XPS spectra of Pb²⁺ adsorbed were 0.6-0.7 eV lower than those of free Pb(NO₃)₂, indicating the transfer of electrons during adsorption. The conversion of hydroxymethyl groups in sugarcane bagasse into carboxylate groups, as well as the chelation between Pb²⁺ ions and carboxylate groups, was validated in this work, which is beneficial for the treatment of wastewater polluted by lead ions.

Adsorptive removal of enrofloxacin with magnetic functionalized graphene oxide@ metal-organic frameworks employing D-optimal mixture design

A novel sorbent based on a mixture of magnetic functionalized graphene oxide and MOFs was developed to remove enrofloxacin (EFX) from water samples. The prepared sorbent was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectra, scanning electron microscope images, and X-ray powder diffraction pattern. The sorbent compositions were optimized by the mixture experimental design. Under the optimal condition, the percentages of each sorbent component, including triethylene tetramine-functionalized graphene oxide (FGO), Fe₃ O₄ , and MOF-5, were 40%, 21%, and 39%, respectively. Besides, the intraparticle diffusion and pseudo-second-order kinetic models can describe the EFX adsorption procedure because of two adsorption mechanisms of EFX on FGO and MOF-5. A positive standard enthalpy of 49.80 kJ/mol indicated the EFX adsorption is endothermic with a chemisorption process. The negative values of ΔG^o obtained in the range of -8.979 to -3.431 kJ/mol at all studied temperatures showed that the adsorption process was also spontaneous. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were analyzed with the partition coefficient to reduce bias in the isotherm model evaluation. The maximum adsorption capacity of 344.83 mg/g and a high partition coefficient of 17.42 g/L in an initial EFX concentration of 10 mg/L were obtained for the EFX removal. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Magnetic functionalized graphene oxide @MOF-5 as a sorbent for the enrofloxacin removal is synthesized. The percentage amount of each component of the sorbent is optimized using the D-optimal mixture design. Adsorption mechanisms of enrofloxacin on magnetic functionalized graphene oxide @MOF-5 are discussed. Thermodynamic parameters for the enrofloxacin adsorption with the sorbents are determined. Isotherm model for the enrofloxacin removal with the sorbent is investigated.

Amino-modified Graphene Oxide/Fe3O4 for Dispersive Solid-Phase Extraction of Cadmium Ions in Rice, Lentil, and Water Samples

In this study, amino groups were directly coated on reduced graphene oxide sheets and applied for the extraction of cadmium(II) ions from well water, aqueduct (water coming from mountain), lentils and rice prior to measurements by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The properties of the adsorbent were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and a vibrating sample magnetometer. Some parameters related to the adsorption and desorption stages were optimized. After preconcentration, the linear determination range of cadmium(II) was 0.5 - 40 μg L^-1. The limit of quantification, relative standard deviation and preconcentration factor were obtained as 0.5 μg L^-1, 0.39 - 2.18% and 100, respectively.

Adsorptive removal of lead (II) ion from water and wastewater media using carbon-based nanomaterials as unique sorbents: A review

Carbon-based nanomaterials and its derivatives such as carbon nanotubes, graphene, reduced graphene oxide, and graphene oxide have been widely used as unique sorbents for removal of both organic and inorganic contaminants due to unique physical and chemical properties. In the review, application of the carbon-based nanomaterials or nanocomposites is considered with particular focus on the lead(II) removal from water and wastewater samples. Moreover, various procedures of synthesis and functionalization of each class of carbon-based nanomaterials were reviewed. A critical review has been given to the adsorption behavior of these nanomaterials and interaction type between the sorbent and lead(II) ion s due to changes in their surface structure and functional group modification for the removal of lead(II)ions. The adsorption capacity, the sorbent selectivity and structure, and the adsorption mechanism for lead(II) ion adsorption with these sorbents were studied and compared. Specific consideration is devoted to effecting of pH of samples as a critical factor in the adsorption of lead(II)ions on each class of carbon-based nanomaterials. Also, the advantages and disadvantages of the nanomaterials or nanocomposites for the adsorption of lead(II) ion were evaluated in detail. In this way, the paper will contribute to presenting suggestions for the preparation of new sorbents to researchers for future study, as well as the remaining research challenges in this field.

Removal of heavy metals in aquatic environment by graphene oxide composites: a review

As the most important graphene derivate, graphene oxide (GO) is a high-efficient adsorbent for the removal of heavy metals in aquatic environment due to its abundant oxygen functional groups, enormous specific area, and strong hydrophilia. However, there are some drawbacks, such as easily aggregating and difficult separation, restricting the environmental application of GO. GO is not a suitable adsorbent by itself. Hence, some materials were used to synthesize GO composites, and GO composites are commonly characterized by high adsorption capacity to overcome the above drawbacks. This review discusses five main GO composites-GO-chitosan, GO-alginate, GO-SiO₂, NZVI-rGO, and magnetic GO composites-and summarizes the synthesis methods of GO composites and its application for the removal of heavy metals in aquatic environments. The influencing factors, adsorption capacities, and mechanisms related to the removal of heavy metals by GO composites are highlighted. Lastly, the application potentials and challenges of GO composites for aqueous environmental remediation are discussed. Graphical abstract.

Diversity evolution of functional bacteria and resistance genes (CzcA) in aerobic activated sludge under Cd(II) stress

An activated sludge sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was used to treat divalent cadmium (Cd(II)) wastewater for 60 d to investigate the overall treatment performance, evolution of the bacterial community, and abundance of the Cd(II) resistance gene CzcA and shifts in its potential host bacteria. During stable operation with a Cd(II) concentration of 20 mg/L, the average removal efficiencies of Cd(II) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were more than 85% and that of total phosphorus was greater than 70%, while the total nitrogen (TN) was only about 45%. The protein (PN) content in the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) increased significantly after Cd(II) addition, while polysaccharides displayed a decreasing trend (p < 0.05), indicating that EPS prefer to release PN to adsorb Cd(II) and protect bacteria from damage. Three-dimensional fluorescence spectral analysis showed that fulvic acid-like substances were the most abundant chemical components of EPS. The addition of Cd(II) adversely affected most denitrifying bacteria (p < 0.05), which is consistent with the low TN removal. In addition, quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis revealed that CzcA gene abundance decreased as the Cd(II) concentration increased, possibly because expression of the CzcA gene was inhibited by Cd(II) stress. The majority of CzcA gene sequences were carried by Pseudomonas, making it the dominant genus among Cd(II)-resistant bacteria.

Synthesis of novel sepiolite-iron oxide-manganese dioxide nanocomposite and application for lead(II) removal from aqueous solutions

In this study, the sepiolite-iron oxide-manganese dioxide (Sep-Fe₃O₄-MnO₂) nanocomposite was synthesized and applied as a magnetically separable adsorbent for removal of Pb(II) ions from water in a batch system. The effects of initial Pb(II) concentration, adsorbent dosage, contact time, pH value, and temperature were investigated to optimize the conditions for maximum adsorption. The equilibrium adsorption data were analyzed with the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin models. The adsorption process closely agreed with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, and the monolayer saturation adsorption value was achieved as 131.58 mg g^-1. The adsorption kinetics follow the pseudo-second-order (PSO) model that illustrated the rate controlling step might be chemisorption. Thermodynamic investigations for the removal process were conducted by determining the values of ∆G°, ∆H°, and ∆S°. The adsorption behavior of Pb(II) on the Sep-Fe₃O₄-MnO₂ was a spontaneous and endothermic process. Several consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles confirmed that the proposed Sep-Fe₃O₄-MnO₂ nanocomposite could be reused after successive lead removal. Furthermore, the practical application of the adsorbent was successfully realized by the treatment of real Pb-contaminated water samples.

Cross-Linking Stabilizes Electrical Resistance of Reduced Graphene Oxide in Humid Environments

Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is an excellent candidate for many sensor applications, since its electrical properties can be tailored to become sensitive to temperature, humidity, strain, and chemicals. However, the wide use of rGO may be limited by its susceptibility to humidity changes. Here, for the first time, we report experimental evidence that (i) the interlayer spacing between rGO sheets can swell upon exposure to humid environments due to the intercalation of water and (ii) the expanded interlayer spacing increases electrical resistance. As a novel means of mitigating this instability, ethylenediamine was used as a covalent cross-linker to anchor rGO sheets to limit interlayer expansion and stabilize electrical resistance under humid environments.

Self-assembled three-dimensional double network graphene oxide/polyacrylic acid hybrid aerogel for removal of Cu2+ from aqueous solution

Three-dimensional (3D) double network graphene oxide/polyacrylic acid (GO/PAA) hybrid aerogels were fabricated under mild conditions from the mixture of GO and acrylic acid (AA) monomers using a one-pot in situ solution polymerization process which included the polymerization of AA and the self-assembly of functional GO sheets. The PAA chains served as not only binder to assemble GO sheets into 3D framework but also modifier to provide more active functional groups. The adsorbents based on such material exhibited superior adsorption performance towards Cu²⁺ ions in aqueous media due to rich mesopores, high specific surface area, and abundant active sites. This work brings a new vision for assembling 3D porous graphene-based nanomaterials as adsorbents in environmental protection.
