Macroinvertebrate community in relation to water quality and riparian land use in a substropical mountain stream, China

A study of macroinvertebrate community structure and diversity in response to land use type in the Yiluo River Basin

Land use types have a significant impact on river ecosystems. The Yiluo River is the largest tributary below Xiaolangdi Reservoir in the middle reaches of the Yellow River, and is one of the important water conservation areas in the Yellow River Basin. Studying the ecological status of the Yiluo River under varied land use types in this basin is crucial for both ecological protection and the high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin. This study investigated the impacts of land use types on the macroinvertebrate community and functional structure in the Yiluo River Basin and introduced the concept of the land use health index (LUI). During the survey period, a total of 11,894 macroinvertebrates were collected, and 143 species were identified, belonging to 4 phyla, 7 orders, 22 families, and 75 families. The results showed that LUI had the most significant impact on macroinvertebrate community structure, with substrate type, dry plant weight, total phosphorus, turbidity, and attached algae biomass also playing significant roles in affecting macroinvertebrate communities. The species richness, the Shannon-Wiener index, and the Margalef richness index exhibited a nonlinear positive correlation with LUI of the sampling site, increasing as LUI enhancing and eventually reaching a plateau. Functional richness showed a linear and positive correlation with LUI, increasing with its enhancement, while functional evenness and functional divergence exhibited a nonlinear correlation with LUI. Functional evenness initially increased and then decreased with the enhancement of LUI, while functional divergence decreased with LUI enhancement. Bioassessment of Macroinvertebrate Communities Influenced by Gradients of Human Activities

This study explores the impact of anthropogenic land use changes on the macroinvertebrate community structure in the streams of the Cangshan Mountains. Through field collections of macroinvertebrates, measurement of water environments, and delineation of riparian zone land use in eight streams, we analyzed the relationship between land use types, stream water environments, and macroinvertebrate diversities. The results demonstrate urban land use type and water temperature are the key environmental factors driving the differences in macroinvertebrate communities up-, mid-, and downstream. The disturbed streams had lower aquatic biodiversity than those in their natural state, showing a decrease in disturbance-sensitive aquatic insect taxa and a more similar community structure. In the natural woodland area, species distributions may be constrained by watershed segmentation and present more complex community characteristics.

Fatty acid composition of macroinvertebrate scrapers in relation to environmental conditions in subtropical mountain streams

Biochemical fatty acids (FAs) in vivo are essential to the growth and reproduction of animals including macroinvertebrates in streams and are subject to ambient abiotic variables. However, the main abiotic drivers of FA composition in macroinvertebrate scrapers are varying and uncertain. The aim of this research was to quantify the contributions of abiotic variables, including stream physical, chemical, and climatic variables, to the variation of FAs of macroinvertebrate functional feeding group-scrapers (e.g., Bellamya aeruginosa, Radix swinhoe, Heptagenia sp., and Stenelmis sp.). Stream physical, chemical, and climatic variables and the FAs of scrapers were measured in six subtropical streams during spring. The principal component analysis (PCA) indicated the parameters responsible for FA variation were mainly related to polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), saturated fatty acids (SAFAs), ω3 PUFA, and ω6 PUFA. Multiple factor analysis (MFA) showed that the FA profiles of scrapers strongly correlated with the physical variables. Specifically, the correlation analysis showed that PUFA and terrestrial FA were significantly positively associated with canopy cover, and in contrast that SAFA was negatively correlated with canopy cover. Although water quality and climate variables did not have a good relationship with FAs, they had a strong correlation with physical variables. This research suggested that the influence of environmental variables (e.g., stream physical, chemical, and climatic variables) on FAs of macroinvertebrate scrapers has complex paths. This study provides a theoretical basis for stream management and an empirical framework for the construction of an interactive network beyond food webs that includes environmental variables.

Nitrogen loadings affect trophic structure in stream food webs on the Tibetan Plateau, China

Anthropogenic activities, such as agricultural and industrial development, have increased nutrient inputs into waterways, which affect trophic interactions and the flow of energy through food webs in the aquatic ecosystems. However, the responses of food web structure and function to specific anthropogenic stressors in the alpine stream systems remain unclear. Here, we studied the stream food webs in the Lhasa River on the Tibetan Plateau, China. We measured the isotopic ratios (δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N) of macroinvertebrate and fish functional feeding groups (FFGs) and their basal resources in the streams. Dietary contributions of basal resources to consumers and food web metrics including trophic length, diversity, and redundancy were used to quantify changes in stream food webs in response to anthropogenic disturbance. Dietary analysis showed that allochthonous resources contributed more than autochthonous resources to macroinvertebrate primary consumers regardless of the disturbance intensity in the adjacent land areas. Anthropogenic activities increased the δ¹⁵N values in epilithic algae and isotopic variation in basal resources and fish but reduced the trophic length and redundancy (i.e., fewer species or taxon at each trophic level) in food webs. Additionally, the total nitrogen concentration in waters was the most important environmental variable affecting trophic diversity and redundancy. Therefore, the reduction of nitrogen inputs into streams is critical for sustainable river management and biodiversity conservation in the streams on the Tibetan Plateau.

Spatial Factors Outperform Local Environmental and Geo-Climatic Variables in Structuring Multiple Facets of Stream Macroinvertebrates' β-Diversity

Simple Summary

One of the key targets of community ecology and biogeography concerns revealing the variability and underlying drivers of biodiversity. Most current studies understand biodiversity based on taxonomic information alone. Our study was based on macroinvertebrates from 179 stream sampling sites in the Hun-Tai River Basin in Northeastern China. The correlation of different facets of β-diversity was compared while revealing the relative contribution of multiple abiotic factors (i.e., local environmental, geo-climatic, and spatial factors) to shaping β-diversity based on taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic information. The results showed that functional β-diversity provides important complementary information to taxonomic and phylogenetic β-diversity. Moreover, spatial factors outperform local environmental and geo-climatic variables in structuring multiple facets of stream macroinvertebrates’ β-diversity. Our study provides guidance for future conservation studies of watershed biodiversity, as well as implications for future studies of β-diversity.

Abstract

One of the key targets of community ecology and biogeography concerns revealing the variability and underlying drivers of biodiversity. Most current studies understand biodiversity based on taxonomic information alone, but few studies have shown the relative contributions of multiple abiotic factors in shaping biodiversity based on taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic information. We collected 179 samples of macroinvertebrates in the Hun-Tai River Basin. We validated the complementarity between the three facets and components of β-diversity using the Mantel test. Distance-based redundancy analysis and variance partitioning were applied to explore the comparative importance of local environmental, geo-climatic, and spatial factors on each facet and component of β-diversity. Our study found that taxonomic and phylogenetic total β-diversity was mainly forced by turnover, while functional total β-diversity was largely contributed by nestedness. There is a strong correlation between taxonomic and phylogenetic β-diversity. However, the correlations of functional with both taxonomic and phylogenetic β-diversity were relatively weak. The findings of variation partitioning suggested that distinct facets and components of macroinvertebrates’ β-diversity were impacted by abiotic factors to varying degrees. The contribution of spatial factors was greater than that of the local environment and geo-climatic factors for taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic β-diversity. Thus, studying different facets and components of β-diversity allows a clearer comprehension of the influence of abiotic factors on diversity patterns. Therefore, future research should investigate patterns and mechanisms of β-diversity from taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic perspectives.

Directional spatial processes override non-directional ones in structuring communities of lotic macroinvertebrates differing in dispersal ability

Dispersal is an essential natural process that influences community assembly, yet directional dispersal through wind and water may have distinctive effects. Environmental and spatial factors jointly influence community structure, but their relative importance is anticipated to vary with spatial distance, dispersal mode, and season. Accordingly, a systemic survey was conducted in subtropical Chinese mountain lotic systems to distinguish the relative contributions of environmental control and spatial structuring upon communities of macroinvertebrates with different dispersal ability. Macroinvertebrate samples were collected from the upper reaches and five tributaries of the Hanjiang River in October 2017 (autumn) and April 2018 (spring). These macroinvertebrates were identified and classified into three dispersal groups: aquatic passive (AqPa), terrestrial passive (TePa), and terrestrial active (TeAc). Variation partitioning analyses were performed on environmental factors and different sets of spatial factors (overland dispersal: Overland, directional downwind dispersal: AEM_Wind, along watercourse dispersal: Watercourse, and directional downstream dispersal: AEM_Water). Findings showed that both environmental filtering and spatial structuring influenced the structure of macroinvertebrate metacommunities. For AqPa and TePa groups, pure environmental effects were stronger than pure spatial effects based on most distance matrices; however, in AEM_Water, the effects of spatial processes surpassed those of environmental filtering. For TeAc group, the role of environmental control and spatial structuring varied depending on different spatial models. The results also highlighted seasonal shifts in metacommunity structuring processes. Spatial structures featuring direction, especially AEM_Water, were predominant in explaining the construction of macroinvertebrate communities. This work suggests that directional dispersal should be explicitly considered when examining the structure of ecological communities.

Characterization of the bacterioplankton community and the influencing factors in the upper reaches of the Han River basin

The upper reaches of the Han River are the source region of water for the Middle Route of China's South-to-North Water Diversion Project, mainly for household, industrial, and irrigation purposes. Planktonic bacteria are more sensitive than macroorganisms to water physical and chemical properties and play a critical role in biogeochemical processes in river ecosystems. In November 2017 and April 2018, a systematic and methodical survey was carried out to evaluate the water quality and bacterial communities, on the mainstem of the Han River and its five main tributaries. In this study, high-throughput sequencing technology has been employed to investigate the bacterioplankton community composition. The results indicated the following: (1) diversity increased downstream, especially in the upper reaches of the Han River. (2) The relative abundance of Actinobacteria increased with the increase of river length, while that of Bacteroidetes decreased slightly. (3) Five tributaries were found to be importance sources of taxa to the Han River; however, in both months, a large proportion of operational taxonomic units (37.84% and 36.34%, respectively) had unknown sources. (4) Finally, redundancy analysis (RDA) and Bioenv analysis showed that environmental parameters (pH, TN, Cond, NH₄⁺-N, DO, NO₂^--N, Chl-a, and T) had a great influence (p ≤ 0.05) on the bacterioplankton community. These research results are beneficial for the managing the ecological system, protecting the tributary biodiversity, and conserving the mainstem and tributaries of the Han River basin.

Evaluation of the surface water quality in the Kebir-Rhumel catchment area (northeast Algeria) using biotic indices and physico-chemical analyses

Assessing the water quality of the Kebir-Rhumel watershed by the use of benthic macroinvertebrates and physico-chemical analysis is the aim of this work. Thirteen physicochemical parameters and macroinvertebrates fauna were collected monthly in 15 stations located along the catchment area in the two principal wadis: El Kebir and Rhumel. Canonical correspondence analysis was used to study the relationships between physico-chemical parameters and macroinvertebrates. Biotic indices Biological Monitoring Working Party (BMWP'), Global Biological Normalized Index (IBGN), EPT index (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera), and %EPT/Chironomidae, based on benthic macroinvertebrates, have been applied in assessing the biological water quality. According to the results, a majority of the physicochemical parameters measured during the study period show spatial heterogeneity (Kruskal-Wallis, P value < 0.05), indicating that Rhumel wadi is more polluted compared with El Kebir wadi; the NO₂^-, NO₃^-, PO₄^-3, Cl^-, and SM contents are very high consequences of human and industrial anthropogenic actions. Canonical correspondence analysis has shown that the environmental parameters measured during this study influence the dynamics of macroinvertebrates, and the polluo-resistant taxa (Chironomidae) predominate in sites very rich in organic matter with low oxygen conditions. Sensitive taxa have a vulnerability to pollution. The biotic indices used confirm the diagnosis of the physicochemical analysis demonstrating a very degraded quality at Rhumel wadi. The EPT index and %EPT/Chironomidae results are closer to the scores of the BMWP' index.

Effects of different types of land-use on taxonomic and functional diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates in a subtropical river network

Expansion of agricultural and urban areas and intensification of catchment land-use increasingly affect different facets of biodiversity in aquatic communities. However, understanding the responses of taxonomic and functional diversity to specific conversion from natural forest to agriculture and urban land-use remains limited, especially in subtropical streams where biomonitoring programs and using functional traits are still under development. Here, we conducted research in a subtropical stream network to examine the responses of macroinvertebrate taxonomic and functional diversity to different types of land-use in central China. Our results showed that medium body size, univoltine, gill respiration, and slow seasonal development were much higher in natural forest sites, while certain traits related to strong resilience and resistance (e.g., small body size, fast seasonal development, bi-or multivoltine, abundant occurrence in drift, sprawler) dominated in high-intensity agriculture and urbanization sites. We further found that land-use compromised water quality (e.g., increases in total phosphate, conductivity and water temperature) and habitat conditions (e.g., high proportion of sand and silt, gravel, and channel width) accounted for the changes in trait composition based on a combination of RLQ and fourth-corner analysis. Moreover, natural forest sites presented relatively high values of functional richness than other land-use, demonstrating the importance of natural forest maintenance to promote high levels of functional diversity. However, taxonomic diversity indexes showed higher sensitivity to distinguish different types of land-use compared to functional diversity measures. Even so, given that certain trait categories showed significant relationships with specific local environmental stressors, trait-based approaches can provide reliable evidence to diagnose the cause of impairment and complement the results of the taxonomic-based approaches. Our findings support the idea that taxonomic and functional approaches should be integrated in river restoration and land-use management.

Influences of environmental parameters and phytoplankton productivity on benthic invertebrates in a tropical oligotrophic lake, northern Malaysia

Studies that associate environmental parameters with aquatic organisms in man-made lakes remain limited by accessibility and interest particularly in many Asian countries. With missed opportunities to monitor environmental transitions at Lake Kenyir, our knowledge of lake transition is restricted to the non-mixing shallow waters only. Triplicate monthly benthic invertebrate samples were collected concurrently with various environmental parameters at three locations (zones A-C) of Kenyir Lake, Malaysia. Our results affirmed that the northeast part of Lake Kenyir is oligotrophic. Abundance of phytoplankton, total suspended solids, phosphate, nitrite and nitrate drive the abundance of various groups of benthic invertebrates. All of these extrinsic variables (except phosphate) negatively influenced the density of Trichoptera and positively influenced (P<0.05) the densities of Polychaeta, Oligochaeta, Bivalvia, Gastropod, Isopoda and Copepod in all zones. Phosphate negatively influenced the density of Trichoptera and positively influenced (P<0.05) the densities of Oligochaeta, Bivalvia and Copepod. Its influences on the Polychaeta, Gastropod and Isopoda densities were zone-specific. Overall, seasons equally influenced the relationships between extrinsic and response variables in all zones. The results of this study are useful to evaluate the lake's environmental quality, in conservation and in similar projects involving environmental handling, monitoring and recovery.

The determinant factors for macroinvertebrate assemblages in a recreational river in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia

The determinant factors for macroinvertebrate assemblages in river ecosystems are varied and are unique and specific to the type of macroinvertebrate family. This study aims to assess the determinant factors for macroinvertebrate assemblages in a recreational river. The study was conducted on the Ulu Bendul River, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. A total of ten sampling stations were selected. The research methodology included (1) water quality measurement, (2) habitat characterization, and (3) macroinvertebrate identification and distribution analysis. The statistical analysis used in this study was canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) to represent the relationship between the environmental factors and macroinvertebrate assemblages in the recreational river. This study found that most of the families of macroinvertebrates were very dependent on the temperature, DO, NH₃-N, type of riverbed, etc. All of these factors are important for the survival of the particular type of macroinvertebrate, plus they are also important for selecting egg-laying areas and providing suitable conditions for the larvae to grow. This study advises that improved landscape design for watershed management be implemented in order to enhance water quality and physical habitats, and hence the protection and recovery of the macroinvertebrate biodiversity.

Determination of Changes in the Quality of Surface Water in the River—Reservoir System

Assessing the changing parameters of water quality at different points in the river–reservoir system can help prevent river pollution and implement remedial policies. It is also crucial in modeling water resources. Multivariate statistical analysis is useful for the analysis of changes in surface water quality. It helps to identify indicators that may be responsible for the eutrophication process of a reservoir. Additionally, the analysis of the water quality profile and the water quality index (WQI) is useful in assessing water pollution. These tools can support and verify the results of a multivariate statistical analysis. In this study, changes in water quality parameters of the Turawa reservoir (TR), and the Mała Panew river at the point below the Turawa reservoir (bTR) and above the Turawa reservoir (aTR), were analyzed. The analyzed period was from 2019 to 2020 (360 samples were analyzed). It was found that TN, NO2-N, and NO3-N decreased after passing through the Turawa reservoir. Nevertheless, principal component analysis (PCA) and redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that NO2-N and NO3-N contribute to the observed variability of the water quality in the river-reservoir system. PCA showed that pH and PO4-P had a lower impact on the water quality in the reservoir than nitrogen compounds. Additionally, RDA proved that the values of the NO3-N and NO2-N indicators obtained the highest values at the aTR point, PO4-P at the bTR, and pH at the TR. This allows the conclusion that the Turawa reservoir reduced the concentration of NO2-N and NO3-N in comparison with the concentration of these compounds flowing into the reservoir. PCA and RDA showed that both parameters (NO2-N and NO3-N) may be responsible for the eutrophication process of the Turawa reservoir. The analysis of short-term changes in water quality data may reveal additional sources of water pollution. High temperatures and alkaline reaction may cause the release of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds from sediments, which indicates an increased concentration of TP, PO4-P, and Norg in the waters at the TR point, and TP, PO4-P, and NH4-N concentrations at the bTR point. The water quality profile combined with PCA and RDA allows more effective monitoring for the needs of water management in the reservoir catchment area. The analyzed WQI for water below the reservoir (bTR) was lower than that of the reservoir water (TR), which indicates an improvement in water after passing through the reservoir.

Distance decay of benthic macroinvertebrate communities in a mountain river network: Do dispersal routes and dispersal ability matter?

Environmental heterogeneity and dispersal limitation are important drivers of beta diversity; however, their relative influence on the two fundamental components of beta diversity (i.e., species replacement and richness difference) has not been fully examined in montane streams. Here, we examined the relative importance of local environmental gradients and three physical distance matrices (i.e., overland, watercourse and cost distances) on beta diversity and its two components for a macroinvertebrate metacommunity in a stream network. To provide additional insights into community assembly, we also analysed variation in two deconstructed sub-communities based on dispersal ability (i.e., weak and strong dispersers). Both environmental filters and physical distances (dispersal limitation) drove patterns of overall beta diversity, with the former generally prevailing over the latter. Species replacement components showed stronger correlations with environmental gradients than physical distances, while the opposite is true for the richness difference components. Overland distances were generally more important than cost and watercourse distances for community dissimilarity of stream macroinvertebrates, implying that lateral dispersal out of stream corridors through flight was the major dispersal route in the studied steam network. As expected, community dissimilarity of strong dispersers was primarily shaped by environmental filtering, while community dissimilarity of weak dispersers was associated with the joint effects of environmental filtering and dispersal limitation. Our findings demonstrate that partitioning overall dissimilarity into species replacement and richness difference provides more insights into the processes driving spatial variability in biological communities compared with the utilization of total beta diversity alone. Our results support the notion that maintaining environmental heterogeneity and natural connectivity of stream networks should be effective measures to conserve regional biodiversity.

Taxonomic and functional responses of macroinvertebrates to riparian forest conversion in tropical streams

Land use change threatens the ecological integrity of tropical rivers and streams; however, few studies have simultaneously analyzed the taxonomic and functional responses of tropical macroinvertebrates to riparian forest conversion. Here, we used community structure, functional diversity, and stable isotope analyses to assess the impacts of riparian deforestation on macroinvertebrate communities of streams in southern Mexico. Monthly sampling during the dry season was conducted in streams with riparian forest (forest streams), and in streams with pasture dominating the riparian vegetation (pasture streams). Samples were collected for water quality (physical-chemical variables, nutrient concentrations, and total suspended solids), organic matter (leaf litter abundance and algal biomass), and macroinvertebrate abundance and diversity. Higher temperature, conductivity, suspended solids, and chlorophyll a were detected in pasture streams, while nitrate concentrations and leaf litter biomass were greater in forest streams. Macroinvertebrate density was higher in pasture sites, while no differences in taxonomic diversity and richness were found between land uses. Functional evenness was greater in forest streams, while richness and divergence were similar between land uses, despite differences in taxonomic composition. Environmental variables were associated with taxa distribution but not with functional traits, suggesting current conditions still promote redundancy in ecological function. Isotopic analyses indicated consumers in pasture streams were enriched in ¹³C and ¹⁵N relative to forest streams, potentially reflecting the higher algal biomass documented in pasture systems. Isotopic niches were broader and more overlapped in pasture streams, indicating more generalist feeding habits. No significant losses of taxonomic or functional diversity were detected in pasture streams. However, changes in trophic ecology suggest landscape-level processes are altering macroinvertebrate feeding habits in streams. The changes we observed in habitat, water quality, and macroinvertebrate community were related to the removal of the riparian vegetation, suggesting the structure and function of the focal systems would benefit from riparian restoration.

An Estimated Structural Equation Model to Assess the Effects of Land Use on Water Quality and Benthic Macroinvertebrates in Streams of the Nam-Han River System, South Korea

The extent of anthropogenic land use in watersheds determines the amount of pollutants discharged to streams. This indirectly and directly affects stream water quality and biological health. Most studies have therefore focused on ways to reduce non-point pollution sources to streams from the surrounding land use in watersheds. However, the mechanistic pathways between land use and the deterioration of stream water quality and biological assemblages remain unclear. This study estimated a structural equation model (SEM) representing the impact of agricultural and urban land use on water quality and the benthic macroinvertebrate index (BMI) using IBM AMOS in the Nam-Han river systems, South Korea. The estimated SEM showed that the percent of urban and agricultural land in the watersheds significantly affected both the water quality and the BMI of the streams. Specifically, a higher percent of urban land use had directly increased the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and total phosphorus (TP), and deteriorated the BMI of streams. Similarly, higher proportions of agricultural land use had also directly increased the BOD, total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) concentrations, and lowered the BMI of streams. In addition, it was observed that the percent of urban and agricultural land use had indirectly deteriorated the BMI through increased BOD. However, we were not able to observe any significant indirect effect of the percent of urban and agricultural land use through increased nutrients including TN and TP. These results indicate that increased urban and agricultural land use in the watersheds had directly and indirectly affected the physicochemical characteristics and benthic macroinvertebrate communities in streams. Our findings emphasize the need to develop more elaborate environmental management and restoration strategies to improve the water quality and biological status of streams.

Evaluating the impact of land uses on stream integrity using machine learning algorithms

A general pattern of declining aquatic ecological integrity with increasing urban land use has been well established for a number of watersheds worldwide. A more nuanced characterization of the influence of different urban land uses and the determination of cumulative thresholds will further inform watershed planning and management. To this end, we investigated the utility of two machine learning algorithms (Random Forests (RF) and Boosted Regression Trees (BRT)) to model stream impairment through multimetric macroinvertebrate index known as High Gradient Macroinvertebrate Index (HGMI) in an urbanizing watershed located in north-central New Jersey, United States. These machine learning algorithms were able to explain at least 50% of the variability of stream integrity based on watershed land use/land cover. While comparable in results, RF was found to be easier to train and was somewhat more robust to model overfitting compared to BRT. Our results document the influence of increasing high-medium density (> 30% Impervious Surface cover (ISC)), low density (15-30% ISC) urban and transitional/barren land had in negatively affecting stream biological integrity. The thresholds generated by partial plots suggest that the stream integrity decreased abruptly when the percentage of high-medium and low density urban, and transitional/barren land went above 10%, 8%, and 2% of the watershed, respectively. Additionally, when rural residential surpassed 30% threshold, it behaved similar to low density urban towards stream integrity. Identification of such cumulative thresholds can help watershed managers and policymakers to craft land use zoning regulations and design restoration programs that are grounded by objective scientific criteria.

Priority Pollutants in Water and Sediments of a River for Control Basing on Benthic Macroinvertebrate Community Structure

Understanding the drivers of macroinvertebrate community structure is fundamental for adequately controlling pollutants and managing ecosystems under global change. In this study, the abundance and diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates, as well as their chemical parameters, were investigated quarterly from August 2014 to April 2015 in four reaches of the Huai River basin (HRB). The self-organizing map (SOM) algorithm and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) were simultaneously applied to identify the main factors structuring the benthic community. The results showed that the benthic community structure was always dominated by gastropoda and insecta over seasons and presented obvious spatial and temporal heterogeneity along different pollution levels. The insects were always the top contributors to number density of the benthic community, except for the summer, and the biomass was mainly characterized by mollusca in all seasons. Statistical analysis indicated that TN and NH3-N in water, as well as Hg, As, Cd, and Zn in sediments, were the dominant factors structuring the community, which determined the importance of sediment heavy metal concentrations in explaining the benthic community composition in comparison with other factors. These major factors should be given priority in the process of river pollutant control, which might be rated as a promising way to scientifically improve river health management and ecological restoration.

River health assessment of the Yellow River source region, Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, China, based on tolerance values of macroinvertebrates

For decades, the river health of the Yellow River source region (YRSR) on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau has been a focal issue owing to its unique geographic location and ecological functions. This study investigated the ecological status of the headwater streams, the main stem, and the tributaries of the Yellow River in the YRSR using the tolerance values of macroinvertebrates and those related to biotic indices. The macroinvertebrate assemblages of the headwater streams were characterized by lower biodiversity than the tributaries downstream, based on comparisons of taxonomical composition, functional feeding group composition, and the pollution-tolerant capacity of taxa. The headwater streams had a lower ratio (16%) of pollution-sensitive macroinvertebrate taxa than that of the tributaries downstream (30%). The biotic indices (family- and genus-level biotic indices) indicated that the ecological health of the headwater streams was comparably poorer than that of the downstream tributaries. The combined effect of vulnerable natural conditions and increasing human disturbance is likely the main cause of eco-environmental degradation in the Yellow River headwater streams.

Different responses of taxonomic and functional structures of stream macroinvertebrate communities to local stressors and regional factors in a subtropical biodiversity hotspot

Examining the relative contribution of local environmental stressors and regional factors in structuring biological communities is essential for biodiversity conservation and environmental assessment, yet their relative roles for different community characterizations remain elusive. Here, we examined the responses of taxonomic and functional structures of stream macroinvertebrate communities to local and regional factors across a human-induced environmental gradient in the Han River Basin, one subtropical biodiversity hotspot in China. Our objectives were: 1) to examine the responses of traditional taxonomic measures and functional traits to anthropogenic disturbances; 2) to compare the relative importance of environmental versus spatial variables and catchment-scale versus reach-scale variables for the two community characterizations. We found that both species and trait compositions performed well in differentiating anthropogenic disturbances, indicating that both taxonomic and functional structures of macroinvertebrate communities were strongly altered by human activities. Particularly, some traits related to life history (e.g., voltinism), resilience and resistance (e.g., adult flying ability) are well suited for predicting changes of communities towards anthropogenic disturbances owing to their mechanistic relationship with environmental gradients. We found that environmental variables played more important roles than spatial effects in structuring both taxonomic and functional facets of macroinvertebrate communities. Environmental filtering was more important in determining functional than taxonomic structure, and the opposite was true for spatial effects. In terms of environmental variables, catchment land-uses played the primary role in determining taxonomic composition, whereas reach-scale variables related to local habitat heterogeneity were more influential for functional structure. Our study highlights the importance of employing metacommunity perspectives and different community characterizations in both theoretical and applied research. For stream bioassessment and management, we argue that the combination of taxonomic and functional characterizations of community should be implemented, as different facets of biological communities responded to different types of anthropogenic disturbances.

Statistical assessment of nonpoint source pollution in agricultural watersheds in the Lower Grand River watershed, MO, USA

The water quality in many Midwestern streams and lakes is negatively impacted by agricultural activities. Although the agricultural inputs that degrade water quality are well known, the impact of these inputs varies as a function of geologic and topographic parameters. To better understand how a range of land use, geologic, and topographic factors affect water quality in Midwestern watersheds, we sampled surface water quality parameters, including nitrate, phosphate, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, bacteria, pH, specific conductance, temperature, and biotic index (BI) in 35 independent sub-watersheds within the Lower Grand River Watershed in northern Missouri. For each sub-watershed, the land use/land cover, soil texture, depth to bedrock, depth to the water table, recent precipitation area, total stream length, watershed shape/relief ratio, topographic complexity, mean elevation, and slope were determined. Water quality sampling was conducted twice: in the spring and in the late summer/early fall. A pairwise comparison of water quality parameters acquired in the fall and spring showed that each of these factors varies considerably with season, suggesting that the timing is critical when comparing water quality indicators. Correlation analysis between water quality indicators and watershed characteristics revealed that both geologic and land use characteristics correlated significantly with water quality parameters. The water quality index had the highest correlation with the biotic index during the spring, implying that the lower water quality conditions observed in the spring might be more representative of the longer-term water quality conditions in these watersheds than the higher quality conditions observed in the fall. An assessment of macroinvertebrates indicated that the biotic index was primarily influenced by nutrient loading due to excessive amounts of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) discharge from agricultural land uses. The PCA analysis found a correlation between turbidity, E. coli, and BI, suggesting that livestock grazing may adversely affect the water quality in this watershed. Moreover, this analysis found that N, P, and SC contribute greatly to the observed water quality variability. The results of this study can be used to improve decision-making strategies to improve water quality for the entire river basin.
