Simultaneous immobilization of cadmium and lead in contaminated soils by hybrid bio-nanocomposites of fungal hyphae and nano-hydroxyapatites

Mercapto-functionalized palygorskite modified the growth of Ligusticum Chuanxiong and restrained the Cd migration in the soil-plant system

Ligusticum Chuanxiong is an essential medicinal and edible plant, but it is highly susceptible to the enrichment of soil Cadmium (Cd), which seriously affects its medical safety. However, the control of Cd uptake by Ligusticum Chuanxiong is little reported. In this study, we reported that a green Mercapto-functionalized palygorskite (MPAL) effectively promoted Ligusticum Chuanxiong growth, and restrained the Cd uptake by Ligusticum Chuanxiong both in the mildly contaminated soil (M-Soil) and severely contaminated soil (S-Soil). The experimental results demonstrated that the application of MPAL significantly increased the biomass and antioxidant enzyme activity of Ligusticum Chuanxiong. In the M-Soil, the Cd content in the roots, stems, and leaves of Ligusticum Chuanxiong decreased markedly by 82.46-86.66%, 64.17-71.73%, and 64.94-76.66%, respectively, after the MPAL treatment. In the S-Soil, MPAL application decreased the Cd content in roots, stems, and leaves by 89.43-98.92%, 24.19-86.22%, and 67.14-77.90%, respectively. Based on Diethylenetriamine Pentaacetic Acid (DTPA) extraction, the immobilization efficiency of MPAL for Cd in soils ranged from 22.01% to 77.04%. Additionally, the HOAc extractable Cd was transformed into reducible and oxidizable fractions. Furthermore, MPAL enhanced the activities of soil alkaline phosphatase, and urease, but decreased sucrase activity. Environmental toxicological analysis indicated that MPAL reduced the potential ecological risk of Cd in the soil. These findings revealed that MPAL can effectively reduce Cd accumulation in Ligusticum Chuanxiong and promote plant growth, suggesting its potential as a viable amendment for remediating Cd-contaminated soils.

Transformation of As and Cd associated with Fe-Mn-modified biochar during simultaneous remediation on the contaminated soil

Here, Fe- and Mn-modified biochar (BC-Fe-Mn) was applied to simultaneously stabilize As and Cd in the contaminated soil. The removal efficiencies for NaHCO3-extractable As and DTPA-extractable Cd by BC-Fe-Mn were 60.8% and 49.6%, respectively. The speciation analyses showed that the transformation to low-crystallinity Fe-bound (F3) As, Fe-Mn oxide-bound (OX) of Cd, and residual As and Cd was primarily attributed to stabilizing the two metal(loid)s. Moreover, the correlation analyses showed that the increase of As in F3 fraction was significantly and positively associated with the increase of OX fraction Mn (r = 0.64). Similarly, OX fraction Cd was increased notably with increasing OX fraction Fe (r = 0.91) and OX fraction Mn (r = 0.76). In addition, a novel dialysis experiment was performed to separate the reacted BC-Fe-Mn from the soil for intensively investigating the stabilization mechanisms for As and Cd by BC-Fe-Mn. The characteristic crystalline compounds of (Fe0.67Mn0.33)OOH and Fe2O3 on the surface of BC-Fe-Mn were revealed by SEM-EDS and XRD. And FTIR analyses showed that α-FeOOH, R-COOFe/Mn+, and O-H on BC-Fe-Mn potentially served as the reaction sites for As and Cd. A crystalline compound of MnAsO4 was found in the soil treated by BC-Fe-Mn in the dialysis experiment. Thus, our results are beneficial to deeper understand the mechanisms of simultaneous stabilization of As and Cd by BC-Fe-Mn in soil and support the application of the materials on a large scale.

Assessing heavy metal contamination in Amomum villosum Lour. fruits from plantations in Southern China: Soil-fungi-plant interactions

Amomum villosum Lour. fruit is a common healthy food widely cultivated in southern China. Heavy metal contamination of farmland soils has becomes a serious environmental concern in China. Heavy metals in soil can be introduced into the food chain and pose health risks to humans. However, microbial communities may play beneficial roles in plants grown in metal-polluted soils. This study aimed to assess the potential health risks of heavy metals in soils and A. villosum fruits from different production areas and to explore the soil-microbe-plant regulation pattern for heavy metals in A. villosum fruits. Soil and A. villosum fruit samples were collected from nine planting fields in four provinces of southern China. The results showed that soils from seven areas were polluted with heavy metals to different degrees. Cr and Mn were the most serious contaminating elements. However, the accumulation of heavy metals in A. villosum fruit was negligible with no expected human health risks. Partial least squares path analysis of structural equation modeling showed that the accumulation of heavy metals in A. villosum fruits was influenced by multiple factors. More importantly, the PLS-SEM revealed that the heavy metal content in A. villosum fruits was indirectly affected by soil heavy metals through the regulation of the microbial community. Furthermore, some fungal phyla (e.g., Ascomycota and Chytridiomycota) and genera (e.g., Mucor) were related to the heavy metal content in the soil and in A. villosum fruits. The results of this study verified that soil fungal community play an important role in the accumulation of heavy metals in A. villosum fruits. Using fungi provides a potential biological strategy for reducing the health risk posed by heavy metals in food.

Potential functions of engineered nanomaterials in cadmium remediation in soil-plant system: A review

Soil cadmium (Cd) contamination is a global environmental issue facing agriculture. Under certain conditions, the stable Cd that bound to soil particles tend to be remobilized and absorbed into plants, which is seriously toxic to plant growth and threat food safety. Engineering nanomaterials (ENMs) has attracted increasing attentions in the remediation of Cd pollution in soil-plant system due to their excellent properties with nano-scale size. Herein, this article firstly systematically summarized Cd transformation in soil, transport in soil-plant system, and the toxic effects in plants, following which the functions of ENMs in these processes to remediate Cd pollution are comprehensively reviewed, including immobilization of Cd in soil, inhibition in Cd uptake, transport, and accumulation, as well as physiological detoxication to Cd stress. Finally, some issues to be further studied were raised to promote nano-remediation technology in the environment. This review provides a significant reference for the practical application of ENMs in remediation of Cd pollution in soil, and contributes to sustainable development of agriculture.

TET-Yeasate: An engineered yeast whole-cell lysate-based approach for high performance tetracycline degradation

The widespread of tetracycline (TC) residues in anthropogenic and natural environments pose an immediate threat to public health. Herein, we established the TET-Yeasate, an approach based on whole-cell lysate of engineered yeast, to mitigate the TC contamination in environment. The TET-Yeasate is defined as the biological matrix of whole cell lysate from engineered yeast that containing TC-degradative components (Tet(X), NADPH, Mg2+) and protective macromolecules. The TET-Yeasate was able to efficiently eliminate TC residues in tap water (98.8%), lake water (77.6%), livestock sewage (87.3%) and pharmaceutical wastewater (35.3%) without necessity for exogenous addition of expensive cofactors. The TET-Yeasate was further developed into lyophilized form for ease of storage and delivery. The TET-Yeasate in lyophilized form efficiently removed up to 74.6% TC residue within 0.25 h. In addition, the lyophilization confers promising resilience to TET-Yeasate against adverse temperatures and pH by maintaining degradation efficacy of 85.69%-97.83%. The stability test demonstrated that the biomacromolecules in lysate served as natural protectants that exerted extensive protection on TET-Yeasate during the 14-day storage at various conditions. In addition, 5 potential degradation pathways were elaborated based on the intermediate products. Finally, the analysis indicated that TET-Yeasate enjoyed desirable bio- and eco-safety without introduction of hazardous intermediates and spread of resistance genes. To summary, the TET-Yeasate based on whole cell lysate of engineered yeast provides a cost-effective and safe alternative to efficiently remove TC residues in environment, highlighting the great potential of such whole-cell based methods in environmental decontamination.

Simultaneous removal of aflatoxin B1 and zearalenone in vegetable oils by hierarchical fungal mycelia@graphene oxide@Fe3O4 adsorbent

Physical adsorbents for detoxification are widely used in vegetable oil industry. So far, the high-efficiency and low-cost adsorbents have not been well explored. Here, a hierarchical fungal mycelia@graphene oxide@Fe₃O₄ (FM@GO@Fe₃O₄) was fabricated as an efficient adsorbent for simultaneous removal of aflatoxin B₁ (AFB₁) and zearalenone (ZEN). The morphological, functional and structural characteristics of the prepared adsorbents were systematic investigated. Batch adsorption experiments in both single and binary systems were conducted, and the adsorption behaviours and mechanism were explored. The results indicated that the adsorption process occurred spontaneously and the mycotoxin adsorption could be described as physisorption through hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions. Due to good biological safety, magnetic manipulability, scalability, recyclability and easy regeneration, FM@GO@Fe₃O₄ performance is suitable for application as a detoxification adsorbent in vegetable oil industry. Our study addresses a novel green strategy for removing multiple mycotoxins by integrating the toxigenic isolates with advanced nanomaterials.

Use of Three Different Nanoparticles to Reduce Cd Availability in Soils: Effects on Germination and Early Growth of Sinapis alba L

Globally, cadmium (Cd) is one of the metals that causes the most significant problems of contamination in agricultural soils and toxicity in living organisms. In this study, the ability of three different nanoparticles (dose 3% w/w) (hydroxyapatite (HANPs), maghemite (MNPs), or zero-valent iron (FeNPs)) to decrease the availability of Cd in artificially contaminated agricultural soil was investigated. The effect of Cd and nanoparticles on germination and early growth of Sinapis alba L. was also assessed by tolerance/toxicity bioassays. The available Cd contents in the contaminated soil decreased after treatment with the nanoparticles (available Cd decreased with HANPs: >96.9%, MNPs: >91.9%, FeNPs: >94%), indicating that these nanoparticles are highly efficient for the fixation of available Cd. The toxicity/tolerance bioassays showed different behavior for each nanoparticle. The HANPs negatively affected germination (G(%): 20% worsening compared to control soil), early root growth (G_index: -27.7% compared to control soil), and aerial parts (Ap_index: -12%) of S. alba, but showed positive effects compared to Cd-contaminated soils (G_index: +8-11%; Ap_index: +26-47%). MNP treatment in Cd-contaminated soils had a positive effect on germination (G(%): 6-10% improvement) and early growth of roots (G_index: +16%) and aerial parts (Ap_index: +16-19%). The FeNPs had a positive influence on germination (G(%): +10%) and growth of aerial parts (Ap_index: +12-16%) but not on early growth of roots (G_index: 0%). These nanoparticles can be used to reduce highly available Cd contents in contaminated soils, but MNPs and FeNPs showed the most favorable effects on the early growth and germination of S. alba.

On the Response to Aging of OPEFB/Acrylic Composites: A Fungal Degradation Perspective

Biological agents and their metabolic activity produce significant changes over the microstructure and properties of composites reinforced with natural fibers. In the present investigation, oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) fiber-reinforced acrylic thermoplastic composites were elaborated at three processing temperatures and subjected to water immersion, Prohesion cycle, and continuous salt-fog aging testing. After exposition, microbiological identification was accomplished in terms of fungal colonization. The characterization was complemented by weight loss, mechanical, infrared, and thermogravimetric analysis, as well as scanning electron microscopy. As a result of aging, fungal colonization was observed exclusively after continuous salt fog treatment, particularly by different species of Aspergillus spp. genus. Furthermore, salt spray promoted filamentous fungi growth producing hydrolyzing enzymes capable of degrading the cell walls of OPEFB fibers. In parallel, these fibers swelled due to humidity, which accelerated fungal growth, increased stress, and caused micro-cracks on the surface of composites. This produced the fragility of the composites, increasing Young's modulus, and decreasing both elongation at break and toughness. The infrared spectra showed changes in the intensity and appearance of bands associated with functional groups. Thermogravimetric results confirmed fungal action as the main cause of the deterioration.

Equilibrium kinetics and thermodynamic studies on biosorption of heavy metals by metal-resistant strains of Trichoderma isolated from tannery solid waste

This study was aimed at finding the metal sorption potential of six indigenous Trichoderma strains by using batch experiments for Cd (II), Cr (VI), Cu (II), and Pb (II). Trichoderma atrobrunneum showed maximum metal biosorption potential at 800 mg L^-1 of initial concentration. Two adsorption isotherm models, (1) Langmuir (2) Freundlich models, were employed on the biosorption data obtained at various initial metal concentrations (10 mg L^-1-200 mg L^-1) and pseudo-first (PSI) and pseudo-second (PSII) order equilibrium kinetic models were subjected to data of agitation time (3-7 days). A maximum correlation coefficient value (R²) of ≤ 1 was observed for the Langmuir and PSII model. Results revealed that pH 6-7 was the best for metal sorption, while metal removal efficiency was increased by increasing temperature (298 K, 303 K, 308 K, 313 K). The results of thermodynamic study parameters (∆G°, ∆H°, ∆S°) indicated that heavy metal biosorption by Trichoderma strains was an endothermic, spontaneous, and feasible process. Moreover, surface characterization analysis through SEM, BET, FTIR, and XRD showed that T. atrobrunneum and Trichoderma sp. could adsorb more metal ions when grown in high metal concentrations. The results indicate that living biomass of T. atrobrunneum and Trichoderma sp. is an effective multi-metal biosorbent that can be used for efficacious bioremediation of bio-treatment of heavy metal polluted wastewater.

A review on the bioleaching of toxic metal(loid)s from contaminated soil: Insight into the mechanism of action and the role of influencing factors

The anthropogenic activities in agriculture, industrialization, mining, and metallurgy combined with the natural weathering of rocks, have led to severe contamination of soils by toxic metal(loid)s. In an attempt to remediate these polluted sites, a plethora of conventional approaches such as Solidification/Stabilization (S/S), soil washing, electrokinetic remediation, and chemical oxidation/reduction have been used for the immobilization and removal of toxic metal(loid)s in the soil. However, these conventional methods are associated with certain limitations. These limitations include high operational costs, high energy demands, post-waste disposal difficulties, and secondary pollution. Bioleaching has proven to be a promising alternative to these conventional approaches in removing toxic metal(loid)s from contaminated soil as it is cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and esthetically pleasing. The bioleaching process is influenced by factors including pH, temperature, oxygen, and carbon dioxide supply, as well as nutrients in the medium. It is crucial to monitor these parameters before and throughout the reaction since a change in any, for instance, pH during the reaction, can alter the microbial activity and, therefore, the rate of metal leaching. However, research on these influencing factors and recent innovations has brought significant progress in bioleaching over the years. This critical review, therefore, presents the current approaches to bioleaching and the mechanisms involved in removing toxic metal(loid)s from contaminated soil. We further examined and discussed the fundamental principles of various influencing factors that necessitate optimization in the bioleaching process. Additionally, the future perspectives on adding omics for bioleaching as an emerging technology are discussed.

Development of chitosan-magnetic sawdust hydrochar for Pb and Zn immobilization process on various soil conditions

A series of 60-day soil immobilized incubations were performed to explore the impacts of various factors (incubation time, chitosan modified magnetic sawdust hydrochar (CMSH) dosages, initial pH values, moisture contents, and humic acid (HA)) on CMSH immobilization of Pb and Zn. DTPA and BCR extraction techniques were undertaken to study the distribution of form transformations of Pb and Zn. CMSH showed significant immobilization ability for both DTPA-Pb and DTPA-Zn, and the highest removal rates were shown to be 57.40% and 90.00% for Pb and Zn respectively. After 60 days of incubation, the residual Pb was enhanced by 34-61% and residual Zn increased by 25-41%, which indicated that CMSH was effective in immobilizing Pb and Zn. Meanwhile, the immobilization efficiency improved with increasing incubation time, CMSH dosage, HA dosage, and initial solution pH. In particular, 5% HA application increased the soil TOC and accelerated the metal stabilization processes, with the residual forms of Pb and Zn eventually reaching a maximum of 73% and 71%, respectively. In addition, the alkaline initial solution promoted the ion exchange, surface complexation reaction, and cationic-π interaction, resulting in a better immobilization of Pb and Zn by CMSH. Finally, according to the orthogonal analysis of BCR results, HA dosage was the major factor affecting Pb and Zn immobilization by CMSH compared to soil pH and moisture content in this study.

Remediation of chromium, zinc, arsenic, lead and antimony contaminated acidic mine soil based on Phanerochaete chrysosporium induced phosphate precipitation

Microbial induced phosphate precipitation (MIPP) is an advanced bioremediation technology to reduce the mobility and bioavailability of heavy metals (HMs), but the high level of HMs would inhibit the growth of phosphate solubilizing microbes. This study proposed a new combination system for the remediation of multiple HMs contaminated acidic mine soil, which included hydroxyapatite (HAP) and Phanerochaete chrysosporium (P. chrysosporium, PC) that had high phosphate solubilizing ability and HMs tolerance. Experimental data suggested that in HAP/PC treatment after 35 d of remediation, labile Cr, Zn and As could be transformed into the stable fraction with the maximum immobilization efficiencies increased by 53.01 %, 22.43 %, and 35.65 %, respectively. The secretion of organic acids by P. chrysosporium was proved to promote the dissolution of HAP. Besides, the pH value, available phosphorus (AP) and organic matter (OM) increased in treated soil than in original soil, which also indicated the related dissolution-precipitation mechanism of HMs immobilization. Additionally, characterization results revealed that adsorption and ion exchange also played an important role in the remediation process. The overall results suggested that applying P. chrysosporium coupled with HAP could be considered as an efficient strategy for the remediation of multiple HMs contaminated mine soil and laid a foundation for the future exploration of soil microenvironment response during the remediation process.

Effect of nanohydroxyapatite/biochar/sodium humate composite on phosphorus availability and microbial community in sandy soils

Phosphorus (P) is essential for crop growth as an indispensable nutrient; however, there has been growing concern over the low use efficiency of P used in current fertilizers. We synthesized and characterized a potential P fertilizer nanohydroxyapatite/biochar/sodium humate (nHAP/BC/HANa) composite. To study the impact of the composite on soil chemical properties and microbial community in sandy soils, we set up four treatments as follows: (1) biochar (BC), (2) nanohydroxyapatite (nHAP), (3) nHAP/BC/HANa composite, and (4) sodium humate (HANa) was added separately into soils amended with nHAP/BC (nHAP/BC + HANa) to compare its performance with that of the nHAP/BC/HANa composite. A key finding was that the nHAP/BC/HANa composite not only significantly increased the soil available P content and alkaline phosphatase activity but also the increased organic matter content compared to the control. Additionally, leaching losses of P in soils amended with the nHAP/BC/HANa composite were lower than those in soils amended with the nHAP/BC + HANa, which suggested that the nHAP/BC/HANa composite had great potential to decrease P loss in sandy soils. Moreover, bacterial communities were more sensitive than fungal communities to all treatments. The bacterial communities showed the most significant changes in the nHAP/BC/HANa treatments. Results from Mantel tests further indicated that the strongest correlation between bacterial communities and soil properties occurring in the nHAP/BC/HANa treatments. Random forest analysis was conducted to identify the dominant microbial taxa, such as Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, and Gemmatimonadetes, for predicting changes in soil properties. There was an asymptotical transition in bacterial community assembly processes from stochastic to deterministic in the nHAP/BC/HANa treatments. In conclusion, we demonstrated that nHAP/BC/HANa composite had the remarkable contribution to soil P availability in sandy soils, and simultaneously promoted the bacterial functions potential for P cycling, which present valuable insights to the development of potential P fertilizer.

Effects of Modified Biochar on the Mobility and Speciation Distribution of Cadmium in Contaminated Soil

Cadmium-contaminated soil poses a threat to the environment and human health. Biochar materials have received widespread attention as an in situ immobilizer for the efficient remediation of heavy-metal-contaminated soils. In this study, a modified biochar material (E–CBC) was developed for the immobilization of Cd in contaminated soil. E–CBC was characterized by XPS, SEM, BET, and FTIR. The effects of pristine biochar (BC) and E–CBC on soil physicochemical properties (pH and soil organic matter (SOM)), CaCl2-extractable Cd, total characteristics leaching procedure (TCLP) Cd, and speciation distribution of Cd were studied by incubation experiments. The results showed that the application of BC and E–CBC increased soil pH slightly and SOM significantly. A 2% dosage BC and E–CBC treatment reduced CaCl2-extractable Cd by 14.62% and 91.79%, and reduced TCLP Cd by 9.81% and 99.8%, respectively. E–CBC was shown to effectively induce the transition of Cd in the soil to a stable state. The application of a 0.25% dosage of E–CBC reduced the acid-extractable fraction of Cd from 58.06% to 10.66%. The functional groups increased after modification and may play an important role in the immobilization of Cd in the contaminated soil. In conclusion, E–CBC is a promising in situ immobilizer for the remediation of Cd-contaminated soil.

The Utilization of Modified Zeolite for the Removal of Cs Ions in an Aqueous Solution: Adsorption Capacity, Isotherms, Kinetics and Microscopic Studies

Nuclear energy is a double-edged technology, which has a significant role in the chemical industry, but may bring about radioactivity and destruction. The 2011 Fukushima nuclear power plant accident caused by a tsunami, which flooded and led to tens of millions of disaster debris and tsunami deposits, severely disrupted the electricity supply in Japan and induced USD 211 billion worth of direct economic losses. Cs+ was easily dissolved in this accident, had a high chemical activity, and thus required an appropriate adsorption method. Zeolite is an effective removal adsorbent, which is suitable to be investigated. The present study uses natural zeolite and three inorganic modified zeolites. Furthermore, the effects of various factors are investigated. Kinetic models and the isothermal adsorption mechanism are also conducted. For microscale studies for the adsorption mechanism, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were involved in the study. The results indicate that the optimal dosage is 1.1 g and the maximum adsorption rate is around 80%. An alkaline environment is more conducive to the occurrence of adsorption. As for the isotherm and kinetic studies, the data fits better with the Redlich–Peterson isothermal model and intragranular diffusion model. In this small-scale experiment, the highest adsorption capacity was for Mg-zeolite at 6.53 mg/g. Finally, Mg-Zeolite presents the best adsorption capacity.

Effects of nanoparticles on trace element uptake and toxicity in plants: A review

Agricultural soils are receiving higher inputs of trace elements (TEs) from anthropogenic activities. Application of nanoparticles (NPs) in agriculture as nano-pesticides and nano-fertilizers has gained rapid momentum worldwide. The NPs-based fertilizers can facilitate controlled-release of nutrients which may be absorbed by plants more efficiently than conventional fertilizers. Due to their large surface area with high sorption capacity, NPs can be used to reduce excess TEs uptake by plants. The present review summarizes the effects of NPs on plant growth, photosynthesis, mineral nutrients uptake and TEs concentrations. It also highlights the possible mechanisms underlying NPs-mediated reduction of TEs toxicity at the soil and plant interphase. Nanoparticles are effective in immobilization of TEs in soil through alteration of their speciation and improving soil physical, chemical, and biological properties. At the plant level, NPs reduce TEs translocation from roots to shoots by promoting structural alterations, modifying gene expression, and improving antioxidant defense systems. However, the mechanisms underlying NPs-mediated TEs uptake and toxicity reduction vary with NPs type, mode of application, time of NPs exposure, and plant conditions (e.g., species, cultivars, and growth rate). The review emphasizes that NPs may provide new perspectives to resolve the problem of TEs toxicity in crop plants which may also reduce the food security risks. However, the potential of NPs in metal-contaminated soils is only just starting to be realized, and additional studies are required to explore the mechanisms of NPs-mediated TEs immobilization in soil and uptake by plants. Such future knowledge gap has been highlighted and discussed.

Identification of Cd-resistant microorganisms from heavy metal-contaminated soil and its potential in promoting the growth and Cd accumulation of bermudagrass

Phytoremediation has been increasingly used as a green technology for the remediation of heavy metal contaminated soils. Microorganisms could enhance phytoremediation efficiency by solubilizing heavy metal and improve plant growth by producing phytohormones in the heavy metal contaminated soils. In this study, we investigated the abundance and composition of soil microbial communities in heavy metal contaminated soils. Furthermore, we identified a Cd-resistant fungal strain Penicillium janthinellum ZZ-2 and assessed its potential in improving plant growth, Cd accumulation and Cd tolerance in bermudagrass. The results indicated that long-term heavy metal pollution decreased microbial biomass and activity by inhibiting microbial community diversity, but did not significantly affect community composition. Mainly, the relative abundance of some specific bacterial and fungal taxa, such as Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, Bacteroidetes, Ascomycota and Basidiomycota, changes under metal pollution. Furthermore, at genus level, certain microbial taxa, such as Pseudonocardiaceae, AD3, Latescibacteria, Apiotrichum and Paraboeremia, only exist in polluted soil. One Cd-resistant fungus ZZ-2 was isolated and identified as Penicillium janthinellum. Further characterization revealed that ZZ-2 had a greater capacity for Cd²⁺ absorption, produced indole-3-acid (IAA), and facilitated plant growth in the presence of Cd. Interestingly, ZZ-2 inoculation significantly increased Cd uptake in the stem and root of bermudagrass. Thus, ZZ-2 could improve plant growth under Cd stress by reducing Cd-toxicity, increasing Cd uptake and producing IAA. This study suggests a novel fungus-assisted phytoremediation approach to alleviate Cd toxicity in heavy metals contaminated soils.

A review on new aspects of lipopeptide biosurfactant: Types, production, properties and its application in the bioremediation process

Nowadays, the worldwide search regarding renewable products from natural resources is increasing due to the toxicity of chemical counterparts. Biosurfactants are surface-active compounds that contain several physiological functions that are used in industries like food, pharmaceutical, petroleum and agriculture. Microbial lipopeptides have gained more attention among the researchers for their low toxicity, efficient action and good biodegradability when compared with other surfactants. Because of their versatile properties, lipopeptide compounds are utilized in the remediation of organic and inorganic pollutants. This review presented a depth evaluation of lipopeptide surfactants in the bioremediation process and their properties to maintain a sustainable environment. Lipopeptide can acts as a replacement to chemical surfactants only if they meet industrial-scale production and low-cost substrates. This review also demonstrated the production of a lipopeptide biosurfactant from a low-cost substrate and depicted plausible techniques to manage the substrate residues to determine its ability in the different applications particularly in the bioremediation process.

Effects of an additive (hydroxyapatite-bentonite-biochar) on Cd and Pb stabilization and microbial community composition in contaminated vegetable soil

A two-year pot experiment was conducted with a pimiento-celery cabbage (Capsicum annuum L.-Brassica pekinensis) rotation in acidic soil contaminated with Cd and Pb, which was amended with 0.0, 1.0, 2.5, 5.0 and 10.0% (w/w) premixtures of hydroxyapatite, bentonite and biochar combinations (HTB, in a ratio of 1 : 2 : 2). The results showed that the application of HTB at 2.5-10.0% significantly increased soil pH and organic carbon by an average of 10.38-17.60% and 35.60-55.34% during the two years, respectively. Compared to the control treatment, 1.0-10.0% HTB decreased the available Cd and Pb concentrations by 40.92-77.53% and 41.60-82.79% on average, respectively. In addition, the diversity and richness of the soil bacterial community improved after the two-year application of HTB. The relative abundances of Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes and Chloroflexi increased under the HTB treatments, while those of Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria decreased. Redundancy analysis (RDA) and regression analysis indicated that soil pH and Cd and Pb availability were important factors shaping the soil bacterial community. The Cd and Pb concentrations in the edible parts of pimiento and celery cabbage decreased as the HTB application rate increased and met the Food Quality Standard in each season when the HTB application rate was 5.0% or higher. Higher rates of HTB (5.0% and 10.0%) not only ensured the quality of vegetables, but also significantly promoted pimiento and celery cabbage growth. Overall, these results indicated that the application of HTB, especially at a rate of 5.0%, could be an effective way to immobilize Cd and Pb, improve soil quality and ensure vegetables produced in acidic contaminated soil are safe for human consumption.

Simultaneous immobilization of Pb, Cd and As in soil by hybrid iron-, sulfate- and phosphate-based bio-nanocomposite: Effectiveness, long-term stability and bioavailablity/bioaccessibility evaluation

Here, the bio-nanocomposite (n-HFP + n-HFS)@An was developed to simultaneously immobilize Pb, Cd and As in the severely contaminated soil. The immobilization rates of diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA)/decarbonate-extracted bioavailable Pb, Cd and As were 59.87%, 31.28% and 62.30%, and the immobilization rates of their water-soluble forms were 63.12%, 60.02% and 89.39%, respectively. Moreover, the ten-year acid rain simulated leaching assay showed that the maximum cumulative release contents of Pb, Cd and As in the treated soil samples were decreased by 2.94, 2.46 and 40.60 times, comparing to the un-treated ones. Additionally, the results of SBRC (Solubility Bioaccessibility Research Consortium) revealed that the bioaccessible rates of the three metals in intestinal phase were lower than in gastric phase, and both of them decreased with increasing the immobilization time. The gastric bioaccessibility of Pb, Cd and As had a higher correlation with the contents of water-soluble forms, while the intestinal bioaccessibility was more strongly positively associated with the bioavailable forms.

Highly effective stabilization of Cd and Cu in two different soils and improvement of soil properties by multiple-modified biochar

Heavy metal contamination in soil has attracted great attention worldwide. In situ stabilization has been considered an effective way to remediate soils contaminated by heavy metals. In the present research, a multiple-modified biochar (BCM) was prepared to stabilize Cd and Cu contamination in two different soils: a farmland soil (JYS) and a vegetable soil (ZZS). The results showed that BCM was a porous-like flake material and that modification increased its specific surface area and surface functional groups. The incubation experiment indicated that BCM decreased diethylenetriaminepentaacetic (DTPA)-extractable Cd and Cu by 92.02% and 100.00% for JYS and 90.27% and 100.00% for ZZS, respectively. The toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP)-extractable Cd and Cu decreased 66.46% and 100.00% for JYS and 46.33% and 100.00% for ZZS, respectively. BCM also reduced the mobility of Cd and Cu in soil and transformed them to more stable fractions. In addition, the application of BCM significantly increased the soil dehydrogenase, organic matter content and available K (p < 0.05). These results indicate that BCM has great potential in the remediation of Cd- and Cu-contaminated soil.

Dynamic proteome responses to sequential reduction of Cr(VI) and adsorption of Pb(II) by Pannonibacter phragmitetus BB

Here, the microbial responses to Cr(VI) and Pb(II) with bio-removal of the metals in water by Pannonibacter phragmitetus BB were explored. The comparative bacterial proteomics showed that the intracellular and extracellular Cr(VI) reduction proteins, Pb(II) adsorption by the lipoprotein and sugar-related bacterial proteins, as well as Pb(II) precipitation by phosphate and OH^- were vital to the bio-removal of Cr(VI) and Pb(II). Moreover, the influx and efflux channels of Cr(VI) and Cr(III), Pb(II) transporters, extracellular siderophores for Pb(II) complexation and antioxidant proteins enabled the strain BB to resist the toxicity of Cr(VI) and Pb(II). In addition, the dynamic expression levels of the proteins related to reduction and transportation of Cr(VI), and adsorption, transportation and complexation of Pb(II) were dependent on the corresponding metal, respectively. The anti-oxidative stress system, such as superoxide dismutase, and Na⁺/H⁺ antiporters played central roles in the protein-protein interaction network to resist and detoxify Cr(VI) and Pb(II). The results of our study provide a novel insight for the physiological responses of the strain BB to the combined stresses of Pb(II) and Cr(VI).

Removal of fluoride from wastewater solution using Ce-AlOOH with oxalic acid as modification

In this paper, Ce-AlOOH were investigated to develop as an adsorbent for removing fluoride. Oxalic acid was selected as an effectively modified reagent to improve the performance of adsorption. Cerium existed in the form of CeO₂ and kept good stability during the adsorption process through XRD, TEM, BET, Raman, and Infrared spectra. The adsorption capacity could be improved with the addition of cerium (62.8 mg/g). Specially, the oxalic acid modification significantly promoted the adsorption capacity to 90 mg/g. There adsorption isotherm and kinetics were estimated independently. These adsorption behaviors were in accordance with the Freundlich model and pseudo-second-order model, indicating that chemisorption was the rate-determining step. the obtained adsorbents all exhibited good recycling performance using oxalic acid as the regeneration reagent. The species of tetravalent cerium was the important adsorption sites. The mechanism was carefully explored by XPS analysis. The fluoride adsorption process can be ascribed to the combined effect of the electrostatic action, surface coordination, and ion exchange between M-OH and F^-. Furthermore, modification of oxalic acid exhibited a new easier way to quickly increase M-OH content, which contributed to the dominated adsorption sites.

The Immobilization of Soil Cadmium by the Combined Amendment of Bacteria and Hydroxyapatite

The remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils has attracted increased attention worldwide. The immobilization of metals to prevent their uptake by plants is an efficient way to remediate contaminated soils. This work aimed to seek the immobilization of cadmium in contaminated soils via a combination method. Flask experiments were performed to investigate the effects of hydroxyapatite (HAP) and the Cupriavidus sp. strain ZSK on soil pH and DTPA-extractable cadmium. Pot experiments were carried out to study the effects of the combined amendment on three plant species. The results showed that HAP has no obvious influence on the growth of the strain. With increasing concentrations of HAP, the soil pH increased, and the DTPA-extractable Cd decreased. Via the combined amendment of the strain and HAP (SH), the DTPA-extractable Cd in the soil decreased by 58.2%. With the combined amendment of the SH, the cadmium accumulation in ramie, dandelion, and daisy decreased by 44.9%, 51.0%, and 38.7%, respectively. Moreover, the combined amendment somewhat benefitted the growth of the three plant species and significantly decreased the biosorption of cadmium. These results suggest that the immobilization by the SH combination is a potential method to decrease the available cadmium in the soil and the cadmium accumulation in plants.

Seasonal and spatial contamination statuses and ecological risk of sediment cores highly contaminated by heavy metals and metalloids in the Xiangjiang River

To reveal seasonal and spatial variations of heavy metals and metalloids (HMMs) in sediment of the Xiangjiang River, a total of 24 water and 649 sediment samples were collected from six sampling stations in the Songbai section of the river which had been polluted by HMMs for 100 years. Their contamination statuses and ecological risk were determined by enrichment factor (EF), geo-accumulation index (I_geo), pollution load index (PLI), and mean probable effect concentration quotients (mPECQs) analyses. The results revealed a unique seasonal distribution of metals in the sampling stations: The highest concentrations were revealed in the dry seasons (autumn and winter) and the lowest during the wet seasons (spring and summer). It exhibited a greater seasonal variation in the estuary sediment cores (sites ME and MW) than in the cores of other sites. Moreover, the highest concentrations of the tested metals were also found in the estuary sediment cores in the dry seasons (autumn and winter). The highest vertical concentrations of Pb, Zn, Cu, Ni, As, Fe, and Mn were observed at the depths of 16-36 cm in all of the sampled sediment cores. The EF, I_geo, PLI, and mPECQs values of all samples in autumn were higher than in summer. Cd posed the highest ecological risk in all seasons, although its concentrations were lower compared to other studied elements. Our results will benefit to develop feasible sediment quality guidelines for government monitor and remediate the local sediments in the Xiangjiang River.

Simultaneous adsorption of As(III), Cd(II) and Pb(II) by hybrid bio-nanocomposites of nano hydroxy ferric phosphate and hydroxy ferric sulfate particles coating on Aspergillus niger

To develop an efficient, convenient and cost-effective method to simultaneously remove pollution of As(III), Cd(II) and Pb(II) in wastewater, a strategy to fabricate hybrid bio-nanocomposites ((n-HFP + n-HFS)@An) of nano hydroxy ferric phosphate (n-HFP) and hydroxy ferric sulfate (n-HFS) particles coating on Aspergillus niger was applied. The scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive spectrum analyses showed that (n-HFP + n-HFS)@An composites had been successfully developed which well solved the self-agglomeration problem of the nano particles. Comparing to the bulk nanoparticles, the adsorption rates of the (n-HFP + n-HFS)@An composites for the three metals were promoted 145.34, 28.98 and 25.18% and reached 76.84, 73.62 and 94.31%, respectively. Similarly, the adsorption capacities for As(III), Cd(II), and Pb(II) were 162.00, 205.83 and 730.79 mg/g, respectively. Moreover, the pseudo-second-order kinetic model was more relevant to the adsorption on the three metals by (n-HFP + n-HFS)@An, and adsorbing As(III) was fitted to the Freundlich isotherm model, while the adsorption on Cd(II) or Pb(II) was related to the Langmuir isotherm model. In addition, the adsorption of Cd(II) and Pb(II) was associated with transformation of hydroxyl groups and precipitation with phosphate. As(III) was adsorbed through exchange between AsO₂^- and SO₄^2- in the (n-HFP + n-HFS)@An composites.

An explanation of soil amendments to reduce cadmium phytoavailability and transfer to food chain

Cadmium contamination in soil, water and food has become a global problem since last century's industrial and agricultural revolution. It is a highly toxic metal with serious consequences on human and animal health. Different natural and anthropogenic sources are responsible for Cd release in the soil which ultimately leads to the food chain. Cd persists in soil for long durations due to its minimal microbial or chemical loss. There are various physical, chemical or biological techniques which are helpful to minimize Cd risk in food chain. Among them, in-situ immobilization with organic, inorganic or clay amendments is a cost-effective and an environment friendly strategy to remediate Cd polluted sites. Lime, biochar, organic wastes, phosphorus fertilizers, sepiolite, zeolite, hydroxyapatite and bentonite are commonly used amendments for amelioration of Cd contaminated soils. These amendments reduce Cd uptake and enhance immobilization by adsorption, complexation, and precipitation processes. This review is aimed to provide a comprehensive note on Cd toxicity in humans and environment, its immobilization by different agents through variety of processes, and comparison of technologies for Cd removal from contaminated sites.

Phytoextraction potential of Pteris vittata L. co-planted with woody species for As, Cd, Pb and Zn in contaminated soil

The objective of this study was to determine the phytoextraction potential of a hyperaccumulator co-planted with a large biomass of woody plant in metal(loid)-contaminated soil. A pot experiment was conducted for 270 days (d) to study the growth, physiological responses, and metal(loid)s accumulation characteristics of plants, which included a shade-requiring, As-hyperaccumulator perennial herb, Pteris vittata L., co-planted with a woody tree, namely Morus alba L. or Broussonetia papyrifera L., for soil contaminated with arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn). The results showed that the biomass, photosynthetic pigment contents, antioxidant enzyme activity, and uptake of As in P. vittata L. were significantly enhanced by co-planting with M. alba L. or B. papyrifera L. Especially, the uptake of As by P. vittata L. was significantly (p < 0.05) increased by 80.0% and 64.2% when it was co-planted with M. alba L. or B. papyrifera L., respectively, while the As, Cd, Pb, and Zn contents of both M. alba L. and B. papyrifera L. were not significantly promoted by the co-planting. The comprehensive phytoextraction of metal(loid)s could be optimized by the co-planting of P. vittata L. with M. alba L. or B. papyrifera L. The total amount of As in the shoots from co-planting species was significantly (p < 0.05) higher than that of the monoculture with M. alba L. or B. papyrifera L., and that of Cd and Zn in the shoots was significantly (p < 0.05) higher than that of the monoculture with P. vittata L. The results showed that the co-planting of P. vittata L. with M. alba L. or B. papyrifera L. can alleviate the toxic effects of metal(loid)s on plant growth and improve the comprehensive phytoextraction amounts of metal(loid)s, and is a promising strategy for remediation of metal(loid)-contaminated soil.

Discerning three novel chromate reduce and transport genes of highly efficient Pannonibacter phragmitetus BB: From genome to gene and protein

Here, Pannonibacter phragmitetus BB was investigated at genomic, genetic and protein levels to explore molecular mechanisms of chromium biotransformation, respectively. The results of Miseq sequencing uncovered that a high-qualified bacterial genome draft was achieved with 5.07 Mb in length. Three novel genes involved in chromate reduce and transport, named nitR, chrA1 and chrA2, were identified by alignment, annotation and phylogenetic tree analyses, which encode a chromate reductase (NitR) and two chromate transporters (ChrA1 and ChrA2). Reverse transcription real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) analyses showed that the relative quantitative transcription of the three genes as the maximum reduction rate of Cr(VI) were significantly up-regulated with the increasing initial Cr(VI) concentrations. However, at the maximum cell growth points nitR was in a low transcription level, while the transcription of chrA1 and chrA2 were hold at a relatively high level and decreased with the increasing initial Cr(VI) concentrations. The ex-situ chromate reducing activity of NitR was revealed a V_max of 34.46 µmol/min/mg enzyme and K_m of 14.55 µmol/L, suggesting feasibility of the reaction with Cr(VI) as substrate. The multiple alignment demonstrates that NitR is potentially a nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) dependent flavin mononucleotide (FMN) reductase of Class I chromate reductases. Our results will prompt a large-scaled bioremediation on the contaminated soils and water by Pannonibacter phragmitetus BB, taking advantage of uncovering its molecular mechanisms of chromium biotransformation.

Stabilization of Cd-, Pb-, Cu- and Zn-contaminated calcareous agricultural soil using red mud: a field experiment

Red mud (RM) was used to remediate heavy metal-contaminated soils. Experiments with two different dosages of RM added to soils were carried out in this study. It was found that soil pH increased 0.3 and 0.5 unit with the dosage of 3 and 5% (wt%), respectively. At the dosage of 5%, the highest stabilization efficiencies for Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn reached 67.95, 64.21, 43.73 and 63.73%, respectively. The addition of RM obviously transferred Cd from the exchangeable fraction to the residual fraction. Meanwhile, in comparison with the control (no RM added), it reduced 24.38, 49.20, 19.42 and 8.89% of Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn in wheat grains at the RM addition dosage of 5%, respectively. At the same time, the yield of wheat grains increased 17.81 and 24.66% at the RM addition dosage of 3 and 5%, respectively. Finally, the addition of RM did not change the soil bacterial community. These results indicate that RM has a great potential in stabilizing heavy metals in calcareous agricultural soils.
