Assessment of some heavy metal accumulation and nutritional quality of shellfish with reference to human health and cancer risk assessment: a seafood safety approach

Statistical Analysis and Health Risk Assessment: Vegetables Irrigated with Wastewater in Kirri Shamozai, Pakistan

One of the primary environmental routes through which humans are exposed to metals and may be exposed to health risks is the food chain's contamination with heavy metals. The study observed the risks posed by contaminants in vegetables produced in soil that received wastewater irrigation, as well as their origins and the human health impacts. Eight harmful metals (Cu, Fe, Zn, Mn, Pb, Cd, Ni, and Cr) were tested for concentration levels in water, soil, and vegetable samples using analytical techniques and an atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The present study investigated the potential health implications associated with the consumption of vegetables irrigated using wastewater containing heavy metals. The results indicated a notable accumulation of heavy metals in plant and soil samples obtained from Kirri Shamozai, Pakistan. In comparison to vegetables cultivated in soil irrigated with fresh water, the concentration levels of heavy metals in vegetables grown on soil irrigated with untreated wastewater were considerably higher at (P ≤ 0.001) and above the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended limits. The results showed that heavy metals had significantly accumulated in the soil and had permeated into the crops. Heavy metal concentrations in vegetables cultivated on land irrigated with wastewater were more significant than those grown on land irrigated with freshwater. They exceeded US EPA and World Health Organization (WHO) limits. PCA results for Pb, Cu, and Cr are the main issues impacting water quality and health hazards. The PCA results show that the soil has an extensive loading of heavy metals Cd, Ni, and Mn.

Evaluation of heavy metals contamination in cereals, vegetables and fruits with probabilistic health hazard in a highly polluted megacity

Heavy metals (HMs) contamination in foodstuffs could pose serious health issues for public health and humans are continually exposed to HMs through the consumption of cereals, fruits, and vegetables. The present study was conducted to assess 11 HMs in foodstuffs to investigate pollution levels and health risks to children and adults. The mean contents of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Zn, Fe, Pb, Co, As, Mn and Ba in foodstuffs were 0.69, 2.73, 10.56, 6.60, 14.50, 9.63, 2.75, 0.50, 0.94, 15.39 and 0.43 mg/kg, respectively and the concentration of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni and Pb were higher than maximum permissible concentrations (MPCs) showing that these foods may be contaminated with metals and constitute a danger to consumers. Vegetables had relatively higher metal contents followed by cereals and fruits. The average value of the Nemerrow composite pollution index (NCPI) for cereals, fruits, and vegetables were 3.99, 6.53, and 11.34, respectively indicating cereal and fruits were moderately contaminated whereas vegetables were heavily contaminated by the studied metals. The total estimated daily and weekly intakes for all studied metals were higher than the maximum tolerable daily intake (MTDI) and provisional tolerance weekly intake (PTWI) recommended by FAO/WHO. The target hazard quotients and hazard index of all studied metals exceeded the standard limit for adults and children suggesting significant non-carcinogenic health hazards. The total cancer risk value of Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb, and As from food intake exceeded the threshold range (1.0E-04), suggesting potential carcinogenic risks. Based on practical and sensible evaluation techniques, the current work will assist policymakers in controlling metal contamination in foodstuffs.

Biomonitoring-Health Risk Nexus of Potentially Toxic Metals on Cerithidea obtusa: A Biomonitoring Study from Peninsular Malaysia

The present study aimed to assess the human health risks of six potentially toxic metals (PTMs) (Cd, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb and Zn) in 21 populations of popular mangrove snails, Cerithidea obtusa, collected from Malaysia. In general, the concentrations (mg/kg wet weight) of Cd (0.03-2.32), Cu (11.4-35.2), Fe (40.9-759), Ni (0.40-6.14), Pb (0.90-13.4) and Zn (3.11-129) found in the snails in all populations were lower than the prescribed maximum permissible limits (MPL)s for Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn. However, in the investigated snail populations, Cd (14%), Pb (62%), Cu (19%), and Zn (10%) were found in exceedance of the MPL of the respective metal. The target hazard quotient (THQ) values in all populations for Cu, Ni, Fe and Zn were all found to be below 1.00. However, for the THQ values of Cd and Pb, two populations exceeded 1.00, while others were below the threshold level. The estimated weekly intake (EWI) of all six metals for all populations was only 0.03-4.65% of the provisional tolerable weekly intake. This conclusively indicates that, based on the EWI, there are no health risks of the six PTMs in the consumption of snails from Malaysia since the assessments are dependent on the consumers' body weight and consumption rate. Nonetheless, the present results indicate that the amounts of snails consumed should be limited to minimize the potential health risks of PTMs to consumers. The relatively low and weak but positive correlations of Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn between C. obtusa and their habitat sediments indicate that C. obtusa can be a potential biomonitor for Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn. This is important for effective mangrove management from the perspective of the sustainable resources from the intertidal mangrove environment. Hence, the biomonitoring-health risk nexus of PTMs in mangrove snails is proposed in the present study.

Metal pollution and potential human health risk assessment in major seafood items (fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods)

Global seafood consumers are increasingly concerned about and prefer safe, high-quality, and hazard-free seafood products. This study investigated various Pakistani processing plants supplying the international market and explored commercially important seafood species (fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods) for metal content, contamination, and potential health risks. The results showed that the metal concentrations differed significantly among species. The metals loads were as Fe > Cu > Zn > Mn > Pb > Ni > Cd > Hg. Contamination factor (CF), pollution load index (PLI), and metal pollution index (MPI), verified negligible contamination of seafood. As assessed by the estimated daily intake, target hazard quotient, hazard index, and carcinogenic risk, the potential human health risks associated with the contaminated seafood were lower than the perceived threat. In conclusion, seafood processing plants export products that meet international food safety standards and are safe for consumers worldwide.

Pollution and Potential Ecological Risk Evaluation Associated with Toxic Metals in an Impacted Mangrove Swamp in Niger Delta, Nigeria

Anthropogenic activities along coastal areas have contributed to the unwarranted discharge of toxic metals into mangrove swamps, posing risks to marine deposits and ecological environments. In this research, we studied the Isaka−Bundu tidal swamp area in the Niger Delta, which is an impacted mangrove creek located along the Bonny river, exposed to pollution pressures. The ecological risks (Er) of toxic metals in the sediments and water of the Isaka−Bundu tidal mangrove swamp followed a decreasing order (Cu > Zn > Cd > Cu > Pb > As), according to our results, while the potential ecological risk index (PERI) of the toxic metals in the sediments and water of the Isaka−Bundu tidal mangrove swamp can be said to have a very high ecological risk (PERI ≥ 600). The sediment pollution load index (PLI) was higher than 1 in all three analyzed stations, suggesting extremely toxic pollution. The enrichment evaluation shows that the studied stations have a moderate potential ecological risk of Cd, with the enrichment value for Pb showing low potential ecological risk. Our study shows that the Isaka−Bundu tidal mangrove swamp has a significant level of toxic metal pollution, which is evidence of the illegal activities performed in the Niger Delta.

Consumption of metal-contaminated shellfish from the Cuddalore coast in Southeastern India poses a hazard to public health

Seasonal distribution of four metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) in eight shellfish species collected from the heavily contaminated Cuddalore coast in Tamil Nadu, Southern India, were analyzed. Metal concentrations in all shellfish species were determined using atomic absorption spectrometry. All metals were present in all seasons in most of the species, however, with a few exceptions. Overall, the metal concentration was in the descending order: Zn > Cu > Pb > Cd. Metals might have emerged from both natural and anthropogenic sources as per multivariate statistical analysis. Bioaccumulation factor results showed that cadmium was more bioaccumulated and beyond the threshold limit. Hazard index (HI) values revealed that consuming shellfish from Cuddalore coast can pose hazards to human health, with all HI values beyond threshold limit across all seasons - premonsoon (1.33), monsoon (1.73), postmonsoon (2.55), and summer (2.64). It is evident that consumption of shellfish across all seasons may have adverse health impacts to the people.

Spatial distribution and source apportionment of heavy metal(loid)s in urban topsoil in Mianyang, Southwest China

Spatial distributions and sources of some commonly concerned heavy metal(loid)s (HMs, As, Ba, Cr, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, Mn, Zn, and V) in topsoil of Mianyang city, a typical medium-sized emerging industrial city in Southwest China, were determined to explore the influences of anthropogenic activities on the urban environment. The contents of the 10 HMs in 101 topsoil samples were analyzed using an X-ray fluorescence spectrometer, and their sources were analyzed by positive matrix factorization and statistical analysis. The spatial distributions of the HMs and the source contributions were mapped using GIS technology. The results showed that the mean contents of Ba, Cr, Cu, and Zn in the topsoil were significantly higher than their background values. Industrial activities resulted in high contents of Ba, Zn, Cu, and Cr. As, Co, Ni, and V that primarily came from natural sources; Pb, Cr, Cu, and Zn were chiefly derived from a mixed source of industry and traffic; and Ba and Mn primarily originated from industrial sources. Natural sources, mixed sources, and industrial sources contributed 32.6%, 34.4%, and 33.0% of the total HM contents, respectively. Industrial sources and mixed sources of industry and traffic were the main anthropogenic sources of HMs in the urban topsoil and should be the focus of pollution control.

Food safety of the green tiger shrimp Penaeus semisulcatus from the Persian Gulf

Seafood is a rich source of essential compounds for human health, but the consumption of aquatic products that are exposed to environmental pollutants, especially trace metals, comes with risk. Therefore, in this study, the levels of nickel, zinc, and lead in the muscle of shrimp Penaeus semisulcatus caught from the north of the Persian Gulf as a polluted environment were measured, and the health risks were assessed. The results showed that the level of Zn (300.88 ± 2.76 µg/g) in the muscle of shrimp was higher than Ni (6.82 ± 0.10) and Pb (1.10 ± 0.09 µg/g), and the amount of accumulation of all three metals is higher than the allowable limit proposed by the FAO/WHO. According to values of estimated daily intake (EDI) and target hazard quotient (THQ), the consumption of shrimp has no or minimal risk for health. However, the target cancer risk (TR) of Ni (adult, 0.00294; child, 0.00196) indicated that Ni accumulation is associated with carcinogenic risks. These findings may be helpful in the proper management of seafood quality and public health in the Persian Gulf.

Bridging the gap: linking morpho-functional traits' plasticity with hyperaccumulation

Plant species exhibiting heavy metal tolerance are instrumental in phytoremediation of metalliferous sites. Most of the time, variations in plant functional traits (PFTs) are overlooked while identifying hyperaccumulators. However, investigating morphological, physiological, and phenological variations can contribute to our knowledge about stress tolerance, and aid in identifying potential hyperaccumulators. In the present study, we investigated variation in morpho-functional traits in Solanum nigrum, a known hyperaccumulator, under lead (Pb) stress. Twenty-one PFTs including 9 above-ground (leaf count, leaf area, specific leaf area, leaf dry matter content, leaf thickness, leaf dry mass, shoot length, stem dry mass, stem diameter), 3 below-ground (root length, root dry mass, and root diameter), 4 reproductive (flower bud count, fruit count, flower count, and fruit dry mass), and 5 photosynthetic traits (total chlorophyll, total carotenoid, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and photosynthetic efficiency) under varying Pb concentrations (500-2000 mg kg^-1) were assessed. Pillai's trace test (MANOVA) depicted significant variations in above-ground, below-ground, and photosynthetic traits, whereas reproductive traits did not vary significantly with progressive metal concentration. However, most of the studied traits except flower count, fruit dry mass, and chlorophyll b varied significantly under Pb stress. The study depicts that enhanced PFT's plasticity enables S. nigrum to grow in Pb-contaminated soil effectively without impacting plant fitness. Plasticity of morpho-functional traits, therefore, establishes itself as a resourceful approach in successful identification of phytoremediation capacity of a plant.

Assessment of Heavy Metal Concentration in Water, Sediment and Common Fish Species of Dhaleshwari River in Bangladesh and their Health Implications

The present study emphasized on evaluating the extent of pollution of Dhaleshwari River in Bangladesh due to the discharge of heavy metals from tanneries and other industries along with the health risks associated with the consumption of the heavy metals accumulated fish. For this purpose, three spots of Dhaleshwari River which are in the vicinity of the industrial outlet were selected for evaluating the seasonal status of heavy metals in water, sediment, and organs of three common fish species. Average concentrations of metals in water and sediment were in the order of Cr > Cd > Pb > Cu > As and Cr > Pb > Cu > As > Cd respectively. The average HM concentrations in water and sediment exceeded WHO and USEPA standards suggesting serious pollution to the aquatic environment. In fish organs, metal concentrations were in the order of Cu > Cr > Pb > Cd > As. Accumulation was highest in gills and lowest in muscles. Fish muscles had a relatively higher concentration of heavy metals (except As) exceeding the safe limits of FAO and WHO. Seasonal variation was also observed in water for all metals (p < 0.01), in sediment for Cu and As (p < 0.05), and in fish for Cr, Cd, and Cu (p < 0.05); higher concentrations were observed in winter. Bioconcentration factor analysis indicated that Cu, Pb, and Cr were more concentrated in fish. Health risk assessment reveals that the carcinogenic risk of Cr is associated with the consumption of contaminated fish species of the studied area.

Potential health risks of toxic heavy metals and nitrate via commonly consumed bivalve and vegetable species in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

This study aimed to evaluate the health risks of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), inorganic arsenic (As), and nitrate exposure through the consumption of bivalves and vegetables collected from local markets in Ho Chi Minh City. The present study analyzed four favorite bivalve species (Meretrix lyrate; Perna viridis; Anadara subcrenata; Anadara granosa) for concentrations of Cd, Pb, and inorganic As and 9 vegetable species (Brassica juncea; Brassica integrifolia; Brassica rapa chinensis; Nasturtium officinale; Lactuca sativa; Ipomoea aquatica; Amaranthus gangeticus; Ipomoea batatas; Spinacia oleracea) for concentrations of Pb and nitrate. The target hazard quotient (THQ) and target cancer risk (TR) were calculated to estimate non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks, respectively. For bivalves, Cd and inorganic As were present at relatively lower concentrations, whereas a relatively higher accumulation of Pb was recorded. The THQ for Cd, Pb, or inorganic As was below the threshold of 1, suggesting no potential health risks. In the case of vegetables, Pb was present at relatively low concentrations, while nitrate accumulation was at relatively high concentrations. The THQ for nitrate was higher than the threshold of 1, suggesting a potential health risk. The combined effects are estimated according to the hazard index (HI), which shows the health risks associated with the consumption of these bivalves and vegetable species. Therefore, continuous and excess consumption for a lifetime of more than 70 years has a probability of target cancer risk.

Tracing the heavy metals zinc, lead and nickel in banana shrimp (Penaeus merguiensis) from the Persian Gulf and human health risk assessment

Seafood has long been considered a unique source of nutrition. However, increasing trends in consumption of marine products must be considered, especially in potentially polluted environments such as the Persian Gulf. This study was undertaken to analyse the level of heavy metal contamination of nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn), and lead (Pb) in shrimp (Penaeus merguiensis) captured from the northern Persian Gulf. The concentration of heavy metals in the muscle of shrimp followed the order Zn > Ni > Pb. The content of Zn and Ni was higher than recommended standard limits by the FAO/WHO. The combined impact of all metals was lower than the acceptable limit of 1 in shrimp. The carcinogenic risk for Ni was higher than the unacceptable value. In total, our finding indicated no potential health risk from the daily consumption of this species. However, long-term consumption of shrimp can pose a risk of carcinogenic effects of nickel. Continuous monitoring of these trace metals in seafood is necessary to ensure the quality of seafood and food safety.

Effect of Food Matrix Type on Growth Characteristics of and Hemolysin Production by Vibrio alginolyticus

ABSTRACT

The growth of and hemolysin production by two V. alginolyticus strains (HY9901 and ATCC 17749T) at 30°C were investigated in briny tilapia, shrimp, scallop, oyster, pork, chicken, freshwater fish, and egg fried rice. Bacteria were enumerated by plate counting. Hemolysin production was evaluated with blood agar and hemolytic titer tests. The two V. alginolyticus strains had similar growth and hemolysin production patterns in all tested foods. Based on the goodness-of-fit primary model statistics (coefficient of determination, mean square error, bias factor, and accuracy factor), the modified Gompertz model was a better fit than the logistic model to V. alginolyticus growth in foods. Growth kinetic parameters of V. alginolyticus had a higher μmax and shorter λ in the following order: briny tilapia > shrimp > freshwater fish > egg fried rice > scallop > oyster > chicken > pork. V. alginolyticus levels were similar at the stationary phase, with no significant growth difference between raw and cooked foods. Significantly higher thermostable direct hemolysin activity (P < 0.05) was found for V. alginolyticus in the following order: briny tilapia > freshwater fish > shrimp > chicken > egg fried rice > scallop > oyster > pork. However, the hemolytic titer was not consistent with the thermostable direct hemolysin activity and was significantly higher (P < 0.05) in the following order: briny tilapia > egg fried rice > shrimp > freshwater fish > chicken > scallop > oyster > pork. Contrary to current belief, V. alginolyticus produced more hemolysin in some nonseafoods (freshwater fish, egg fried rice, and chicken) than in scallops or oysters. This report is the first on the growth and toxicity of V. alginolyticus in different food matrices and confirms that some nonseafoods can be contaminated with pathogenic V. alginolyticus. These results should increase awareness of nonseafood safety issues and improve the accuracy of V. alginolyticus risk assessments.

HIGHLIGHTS

A novel dispersive magnetic solid phase microextraction using ionic liquid-coated amino silanized magnetic graphene oxide nanocomposite for high efficient separation/preconcentration of toxic ions from shellfish samples

A novel dispersive magnetic solid phase microextraction (d-MSPE) method using ionic liquid-coated amino silanized magnetic graphene oxide (MGO@SiO₂-APTES-IL) as adsorbent has been established for enriching and extracting lead(II), copper(II) and cadmium(II) in shellfish samples. The novel nanocomposite was proved synthesized successfully by various characterization technologies. Parameters that could affect the recoveries of target ions were investigated and optimized focusing on adsorption and desorption using Box-Behnken design of response surface methodology (BBD-RSM). The limits of detection (LODs) for three target heavy metal ions were 2.42, 3.36, 3.75 ng L^-1, respectively. Additionally, the maximum adsorption capacities of the nanocomposite for target ions were 251.23, 138.51, 159.31 mg g^-1 at 298 K, respectively, the nanoadsorbent can be regenerated without significant adsorption capacities loss for four times. These observations revealed that the novel nanocomposite can be used as an excellent adsorbent for separation and preconcentration of the target ions.

Heavy metal spatial and temporal trends (2008-2018) in clams and mussel from Adriatic Sea (Italy): Possible definition of forecasting models

In 2008-2018, 1458 georeferenced samples of clams and 343 of mussels were harvested in Italy from classified areas along Marche coast and analyzed within food-safety monitoring plans. Pb, Cd, V, Ni, Cr, and As median levels (mg kg^-1) were 0.09, 0.08, 0.29, 0.77, 0.35, and 2.35 in clams and 0.16, 0.15, 0.46, 0.48, 0.25, and 3.34 in mussels. The reported levels were comparable with the published ones, and Hg always fell below LOQ (0.025 mg kg^-1). Pb and Cd datasets, based on quarterly results, show a decreasing trend in clams and constant baseline value for mussels. Time-trends and forecasting models represent an asset to predict emerging food safety/security risks. The metal levels in mussels and clams from the same area allow environmental safety assessment and thus enable the evaluation of contaminants in both water column and sediment. Monitoring of elements that are not regulated may help in preserving food and environmental safety.

Bioaccessibility-corrected health risk of heavy metal exposure via shellfish consumption in coastal region of China

A systematic investigation into bioaccessible heavy metals in shellfish Crassostrea ariakensis, Chlamys farreri, and Sinonovacula constricta from coastal cities Shenzhen, Zhoushan, Qingdao, and Dandong was carried out to assess the potential health risk to residents in coastal regions in China. The bioaccessible fractions of heavy metals were (μg‧g-1): Zn (0.63-15.01), Cu (0.10-12.91), Cd (0.01-0.64), As (0.11-0.33), Cr (0.07-0.12), Pb (0.01-0.03). The bioaccessibilities of heavy metals were Cr 61.86%, inorganic As (iAs) 60.44%, Pb 55.74%, Cu 46.83%, Zn 28.16%, and Cd 24.99%. As for child and adult, the bioaccessibility-corrected estimated daily intakes were acceptable and the non-carcinogenic risks posed by heavy metals were not obvious. The carcinogenic risks posed by bioaccessible heavy metals at the fifth percentile were 10-fold higher than the acceptable level (10-4), with iAs and Cd to be the major contributors, regardless of child or adult. The probabilistic estimation showed the low risk of shellfish consumption, which was verified by higher values of maximum allowable consumption rate and monthly meals at the 95 percentile; while some control of consumption rate and monthly meals was necessary for reducing heavy metal exposure of most shellfish samples, except for the safe consumption of S. constricta for both child and adult in Qingdao and Shenzhen, China.

Assessment of toxic elements in road dust from Hutou Village, China: implications for the highest incidence of lung cancer

We attempt to understand the pollution characteristics and carcinogenic risk of toxic elements around Hutou Village, Xuanwei City, Yunnan Province, China. For this propose, 48 road dust samples were collected systematically, and the concentrations of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Pb, Co, and Cr(IV) were analyzed and compared; the spatial distribution was obtained. The I_geo and EF indices and multivariate statistical analysis (CA, PCA, HACA) were carried out for source investigation, and human health risk assessment was also adopted to evaluate local non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks. The result showed that Cr, Ni, Cu, Cd and Co contaminations were quite serious; Zn, As, Cd, and Pb had similar distribution pattern, and Cr and Ni also shared similar distribution characteristics; Cd, Pb, Zn, and As ascribed to anthropogenic sources, while Cr and Ni originated from either anthropogenic activity or natural sources; Co and Cu originated from natural sources; the non-carcinogenic risk of Co cannot be ignored. The carcinogenic risk of Ni was considered unacceptable. Finally, an indoor coal-burning pattern was established that the high Cd and Ni inhalation and ingestion model was associated with lung cancer.

In Situ-Grown Cdot-Wrapped Boehmite Nanoparticles for Cr(VI) Sensing in Wastewater and a Theoretical Probe for Chromium-Induced Carcinogen Detection

In modern society, massive industrialization escalates environmental degradation by liberating various contaminants into the environment. Hexavalent chromium is a heavy metal that is being discharged from tannery and other industries, resulting in various carcinogenic diseases. This study reports a carbon dot (cdot)-based fluorometric probe for detecting hexavalent chromium in water. This is the very first time that cdots are tailored over the boehmite nanoparticle's surface using an in situ approach. Validation of formation of the nanocomposite has been discussed in detail employing the Rietveld refinement-based X-ray crystallography method. Vibrational spectroscopy and electron microscopy of the sample authenticate the nucleation process and the growth mechanism. The Stern-Volmer approach and time-resolved fluorescence measurements justify the sensitivity of the sensor (∼58 nM), and selectivity is analyzed by exposing the material to different ionic environments. Density functional theory (DFT) is applied herein to analyze the origin of fluorescence and the sensing mechanism of the probe, which shows that photoinduced electron transfer is responsible for the turn-off-based sensing of Cr(VI). The molecular docking simulation is carried out to ensure the binding of cdots to the binding pocket of the glutathione enzyme, which is responsible for treating reactive oxygen species-mediated DNA damage due to elements such as hexavalent chromium. Time-dependent density functional calculations show that the fluorometric probe is capable of detecting Cr(VI) in living cells making it an early stage chromium-mediated carcinogen detector.

Bioaccumulation of trace metals in freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii from farmed and wild sources and human health risk assessment in Bangladesh

The giant freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii, is an important species for Bangladesh's national economy, aquatic biodiversity, and employment opportunities; furthermore, human health risk associated to consumption of this species has become a crucial issue. Eight trace metals (Pb, Cr, Ni, Cd, Fe, Cu, Zn, and Mn) in different body parts of M. rosenbergii (U/10 as large and U/12 and U/15 as medium size), and water collected from farm and wild sources along with the human health risks were assessed in this study. Except Cd, all trace metals exceeded the maximum permissible limits proposed by different authorities. Elevated levels of Pb, Cr, Fe, Cu, Zn, and Mn were found in the wild-caught prawn, whereas Ni and Cd were higher in farmed prawn. A higher trace metal contamination was recorded from the cephalothorax part than the abdomen of both sized prawns. However, trace metal concentrations between two sizes of prawns were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). The estimated daily intakes (EDI) values were higher than the recommended and/or tolerable daily intake for Pb and Cr. Moreover, the target hazard quotient (THQ) values were > 1 for Pb, Cd, Cu, and Zn, elucidating non-carcinogenic risks to the consumers. In addition, the target cancer risk (TR) values of Pb and Ni were high and exceeded the acceptable guideline of 10^-6, explicating the possibility of carcinogenic risks. Therefore, the study concludes that the consumption of the studied prawn species contaminated with elevated levels of toxic metals is associated with higher degree of potential health risks.

Content and dietary exposure of cadmium among residents in Northeast China: a case study based on the 5th China Total Diet Study

Cadmium (Cd), one of the harmful heavy metals, and its accumulation or pollution might cause itai-itai disease. In this study, we investigated the dietary exposure of Cd among residents in Northeast China (including Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning provinces) and also compared the health risks in adult males in terms of dietary intake. Cd contents in 12 categories of foods were derived from original data from the 5th China Total Diet Study (TDS). The following results were obtained in this study: (i) dietary exposure levels of Cd at the margin of safety (MOS) were 4.55, 1.82, and 2.85 in Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning provinces, respectively; (ii) the primary dietary sources of Cd included cereals, legumes, potatoes, meat, aquatic products, and vegetables; (iii) Cd contents in the same food category from different regions were not significantly different from the limit of China's National Standards (LCNSs); (iv) dietary exposure of Cd would not have a detrimental effect on the health of residents in Northeast China; (v) we recommend the government to take precedence of the supervision and spot-checking of cereals, legume-nuts, potatoes, meat, aquatic products, vegetables, and alcoholic beverages because of the higher dietary consumption than others; (vi) 99.99% of the Cd content in cereals, legumes, vegetables, meat, and aquatic products sold in Northeast China was less than the LCNSs at the present situation; and (vii) the harmful effects of Cd to human beings are associated with the Cd content in foods and the consumption of such foods.

Health Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals from Smoked Corbicula fluminea Collected on Roadside Vendors at Kelantan, Malaysia

Corbicula fluminea serves as traditional food to the local people in Kelantan, Malaysia. Concerns regarding river contamination, smoking method, and associated adverse effects on public health had been increasing. Hence, this study aims to measure the level of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb, and Zn) and assess human health risk in C. fluminea consumption at Kelantan. Heavy-metal analysis was done using flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry, while human health risk was assessed using provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI), target hazard quotient (THQ), and hazard index (HI). The estimated weekly intake (EWI) for all metals was found within PTWI, while THQ for Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb, and Zn was 0.12, 0.06, 0.04, 0.41, and 0.03, respectively. The HI was calculated at 0.61 which is less than 1, considered as the safe consumption level. Therefore, C. fluminea consumption in this study was found safe from the health risk of noncarcinogenic effect over a lifetime.
