Pesticides in three rural rivers in Guangzhou, China: spatiotemporal distribution and ecological risk

Occurrence, multiphase partition and risk assessment of organic amine pesticides in drinking water source of Xiang River, China

The extensive use of organic amine pesticides (OAPs) in agricultural practices has resulted in the contamination of water environments, posing threats to ecosystems and human health. This study focused on the Xiang River (XR), a representative drinking water source, as the research area to investigate the occurrence characteristics of 34 OAPs. Diphenylamine emerged as the most prevalent OAP in surface water due to industrial and agricultural activities, while cycloate dominated in sediments due to cumulative effects. Generally, the concentration of OAPs in a mixed tap water sample was lower than those in surface water samples, indicating OAPs can be removed by water plants to a certain extent. The water-sediment distribution coefficients (kd) of ΣOAPs were much less than 1 L/g, the majority of OAPs maintained relatively high concentrations in water samples instead of accumulating in sediments. Furthermore, risk assessment revealed that carbofuran showed a moderate risk to the aquatic environment, with a risk quotient of 0.23, while other OAPs presented minor risks. This study provided crucial insights for regional pesticide management and control in the XR basin, emphasizing the importance of implementing strategies to minimize the release of OAPs into the environment and protect human health.

Hepatic effects of acetochlor chiral isomers in zebrafish and L02 cells

The pesticide acetochlor (ACT) is a chiral isomer commonly detected in the global environment, yet its specific impacts on liver function remain poorly understood. We utilized zebrafish and L02 cells as research models to comprehensively investigate how ACT and its chiral isomers affect the liver. Our investigations unveiled that the R, Rac, and S isomers of ACT disrupt hepatic lipid transport, catabolism, and synthesis, leading to delayed yolk sac absorption and the accumulation of lipids in zebrafish embryos. These isomers induce oxidative stress in the liver of zebrafish embryos, reducing antioxidant levels and enzyme activity. The accumulated lipids in the liver render it susceptible to oxidative stress, further exacerbating hepatocyte damage. Hepatocyte damage manifests as extensive vacuolization of liver cells and alterations in liver morphology, which are induced by R, Rac, and S. Furthermore, we elucidated the molecular mechanisms underpinning the disturbance of hepatic lipid metabolism by R, Rac, and S in L02 cells. These compounds stimulate lipid synthesis through the upregulation of the AMPK/SREBP-1c/FAS pathway while inhibiting lipolysis via downregulation of the PPAR-α/CPT-1a pathway. Remarkably, our results highlight that S exhibits significantly higher hepatotoxicity in comparison to R. This study provides valuable insights into the hepatic effects of ACT chiral isomers.

Molecular mechanisms of cardiotoxicity induced by acetamide and its chiral isomers

Acetamide (ACT) is used in a racemic form, and the considerable residues of this compound in the environment raise potential safety concerns for human health. We investigated the toxicity of ACT and its chiral isomers on human cardiomyocyte (AC16) cell line and zebrafish embryonic heart, and found that (+)-S-ACT was the main component causing cardiac toxicity. Our findings indicate that the IC50 of (±)-Rac-ACT on AC16 cells was 20.19 μg/mL. (-)-R-ACT, (±)-Rac-ACT, and (+)-S-ACT caused DNA damage and apoptosis in AC16 cells at this concentration. The underlying molecular mechanism may involve the induction of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The accumulation of ROS results in a decline in mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and prompts the release of cytochrome c (cyt c) from the mitochondria. This cascade of events ultimately activates the caspase-3 and caspase-9 signaling pathways, resulting in apoptosis. Furthermore, in vivo observations in zebrafish hearts demonstrated caspase-3 activation and the presence of the DNA damage marker (γH2AX), indicating that (+)-S-ACT is more toxic to cardiomyocytes than (-)-R-ACT and (±)-Rac-ACT. These findings suggest that (+)-S-ACT may be the primary component responsible for the toxicity of (±)-Rac-ACT in AC16 cells. Overall, these findings raise public awareness regarding the risks associated with chiral isomeric pesticides and provide a scientific foundation for their appropriate use.

Amide herbicides: Analysis of their environmental fate, combined plant-microorganism soil remediation scheme, and risk prevention and control strategies for sensitive populations

In this study, we predicted the environmental fate of amide herbicides (AHs) using the EQC (EQuilibrium Criterion) model. We found that the soil phase is the main reservoir of AHs in the environment. Second, a toxicokinetic prediction indicated that butachlor have a low human health risk, while the alachlor, acetochlor, metolachlor, napropamide, and propanil are all uncertain. To address the environmental and human-health-related threats posed by AHs, 27 new proteins/enzymes that easily absorb, degrade, and mineralize AHs were designed. Compared with the target protein/enzyme, the comprehensive evaluation value of the new proteins/enzymes increased significantly: the absorption protein increased by 20.29-113.49%; the degradation enzyme increased by 151.26-425.22%; and the mineralization enzyme increased by 23.70-52.16%. Further experiments revealed that the remediating effect of 13 new proteins/enzymes could be significantly enhanced to facilitate their applicability under real environmental conditions. The hydrophobic interactions, van der Waals forces, and polar solvation are the key factors influencing plant-microorganism remediation. Finally, the simulations revealed that appropriate consumption of kiwifruit or simultaneous consumption of ginseng, carrot, and spinach, and avoiding the simultaneous consumption of maize and carrot/spinach are the most effective means reduce the risk of exhibiting AH-linked toxicity.

Pesticides in sediments from Magdalena River, Colombia, are linked to reproductive toxicity on Caenorhabditis elegans

Pesticides are prevalent pollutants found in river sediments in agricultural regions worldwide, leading to environmental pollution and toxic effects on biota. In this study, twenty sediment samples were collected from the Magdalena River in Colombia and analyzed for forty pesticides. Methanolic extracts of the sediments were used to expose Caenorhabditis elegans for 24 h, evaluating the effects on its reproduction. The most abundant pesticides found in Magdalena River sediments were atrazine, bromacil, DDE, and chlorpyrifos. The concentrations of DDE and the sum of DDD, DDE, and DDT were above the Threshold Effect Concentration (TEC) values for freshwater sediments, indicating potential effects on aquatic organisms. The ratios of DDT/(DDE + DDD) and DDD/DDE suggest historical contributions of DDT and degradation under aerobic conditions. Several sampling sites displayed a moderate toxicity risk to biota, as calculated by the sediment quality guideline quotient (SQGQ). Nematode brood size was reduced by up to 37% after sediment extract exposure. The presence of chlordane, DDT-related compounds, and chlorpyrifos in Magdalena River sediments was associated with reproductive toxicity among C. elegans.

Environmental emissions and pollution characteristics of mosquitocides for the control of dengue fever in a typical urban area

Mosquitocides are frequently used to control the spread of dengue fever in tropical and sub-tropic urban regions worldwide, resulting in their discharge into the environment via rainfall runoff, causing adverse effects on ecological health. This study quantitatively evaluated mosquitocide emissions and environmental pollution in a typical urban district in China affected by the dengue fever epidemic, using a method combining market surveys, monitoring campaigns and SWMM (storm water management model) modelling tools. During the assessment period, the total mosquitocide usage in the urban district reached 6334 kg, with an estimated load of 56.55 g entering the receiving environment via rainfall runoff, 91.04 % of which occurred in the rainy season. Monitoring results indicated that the initial 0.5-1 h was the main period of mosquitocide wash off into the receiving water. Environmental mosquitocide pollution levels were found to be affected by the mosquitocide type and the time interval between mosquitocide application and precipitation events. The measured environmental concentrations of mosquitocides in this study were generally higher than those areas unaffected by the dengue fever epidemic. The modelled mosquitocide concentrations were in accordance with monitoring results. The finding of this study are important for assessing the environmental impact of dengue fever control activities, while also providing valuable baseline data for the effective environmental management of mosquitocides.

Occurrence and ecotoxicological risk assessment of pesticides in sediments of the Rosetta branch, Nile River, Egypt

This study aimed to (1) monitor the occurrence and spatiotemporal variations of 100 pesticides in sediments collected monthly from July 2018 to June 2019 from sampling sites in El-Rahawy, Sabal, and Tala, along the Rosetta branch of the Nile River, Egypt, and (2) perform an ecological risk assessment for aquatic organisms upon exposure to the detected sediment pesticides based on the risk quotient (RQ) method. Out of the 100 pesticides monitored, 16 pesticides belonging to seven chemical families were detected, and 55% of the sediment samples were contaminated with one or more pesticide residues. The mean concentration (mg/kg dry weight (dw)) and detection frequency (%) of the four most frequently detected pesticides in the sediment samples were as follows: chlorpyrifos (0.18 mg/kg dw and 34%), p,p'-DDE (0.018 mg/kg dw and 30%), cypermethrin (0.03 mg/kg dw and 14%), and deltamethrin (0.026 mg/kg dw and 13%). The spatial distribution exhibited that El-Rahawy had the highest pesticide load (2.86 mg/kg dw) among the studied sites, whereas the temporal variations revealed that the highest total pesticide concentrations were detected in winter season (1.73 mg/kg dw). Meanwhile, 12 pesticides showed high RQs (>1), posing a potential ecological risk to aquatic species that live and feed on such sediments.

Chronic Toxicity of Primary Metabolites of Chloroacetamide and Glyphosate to Early Life Stages of Marbled Crayfish Procambarus virginalis

Degradation products of herbicides, alone and in combination, may affect non-target aquatic organisms via leaching or runoff from the soil. The effects of 50-day exposure of primary metabolites of chloroacetamide herbicide, acetochlor ESA (AE; 4 µg/L), and glyphosate, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA; 4 µg/L), and their combination (AMPA + AE; 4 + 4 µg/L) on mortality, growth, oxidative stress, antioxidant response, behaviour, and gill histology of early life stages of marbled crayfish (Procambarus virginalis) were investigated. While no treatment effects were observed on cumulative mortality or early ontogeny, growth was significantly lower in all exposed groups compared with the control group. Significant superoxide dismutase activity was observed in exposure groups, and significantly higher glutathione S-transferase activity only in the AMPA + AE group. The gill epithelium in AMPA + AE-exposed crayfish showed swelling as well as numerous unidentified fragments in interlamellar space. Velocity and distance moved in crayfish exposed to metabolites did not differ from controls, but increased activity was observed in the AMPA and AE groups. The study reveals the potential risks of glyphosate and acetochlor herbicide usage through their primary metabolites in the early life stages of marbled crayfish.

Characterizing the Semi-Volatile Organic Compounds in Runoff from Roads and Other Impervious Surfaces in a Suburban Area of Beijing

Stormwater runoff samples were collected from five different land use sites (gas station, city road, campus, park, and residential) in a precipitation event on May 22nd, 2017, from a small suburban area (5 km × 2 km) of the city of Beijing, China. There were 72 types of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) found in these runoff samples, including 33 types of monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs), 22 types of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 6 types of phthalate esters (PAEs), 9 types of pesticides and 2 types of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Especially, 26 types of SVOCs (7 MAHs, 9 PAHs, 5 PAEs, and 5 pesticides) were detected in all water samples. SVOCs concentrations were higher in the samples from gas station and city road, and lower in runoff from campus, park and residential sites. The change in the ratio of anthracene to anthracene plus phenanthrene (ANT/(ANT + PHE)) in this study, reflected the importance of PAH source and land use. Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) and di-n-butyl phthalate, are two of the phthalate esters 100% detected in the runoff samples. The city road runoff DEHP concentrations recorded the highest values (> 6000 ng/L), however, were still less than those wastewater DEHP pollutants measured in developed countries (e.g. UK, Canada, Finland, etc.). One-way ANOVA analysis in this study, showed that land use could significantly influence 23 SVOCs in the runoff samples, whereas the runoff SVOCs in different precipitation period showed no statistical changes in the five sites, and presented a general temporal trends "high (beginning)-low (middle period)-little raising (ending)". The findings in this study could be used in municipal management of wastewater collection and treatment.

Trait-based comparison of transgenic Bt rice and its non-Bt counterpart in response to soil copper pollution

Transgenic Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) rice can provide economic and environmental benefits under the current increasing demand for food and socioeconomic pressures for sustainability. However, information about the ecological adaptation of Bt rice under nontarget environmental stress is still lacking. This study compared the adaptability of one Bt rice and its nontransgenic counterpart to soil copper (Cu) pollution in terms of agronomic and physiological traits. With Cu addition, grain yield and biomass of both cultivars were significantly decreased. Within the same Cu treatment, Bt rice exhibited higher biomass and close plant height, chlorophyll content, grain yield, and grain quality compared with non-Bt rice, except for the grain yield with a 35 mg kg^-1 Cu addition with respect to which Bt rice was significantly lower by 22%. The Cu content in Bt rice was generally lower, whereas the antioxidant enzyme activity and lipid peroxidation were stronger than the non-Bt. These results demonstrated that Bt rice exhibited close adaptability but higher Cu tolerance compared with the non-Bt under Cu stress.

Assessment of Environmental Pollution and Human Exposure to Pesticides by Wastewater Analysis in a Seven-Year Study in Athens, Greece

Pesticides have been used in large amounts around the world for decades and are responsible for environmental pollution and various adverse effects on human health. Analysis of untreated wastewater can deliver useful information on pesticides’ use in a particular area and allow the assessment of human exposure to certain substances. A wide-scope screening method, based on liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry, was applied, using both target and suspect screening methodologies. Daily composite influent wastewater samples were collected for seven or eight consecutive days in Athens between 2014 and 2020 and analyzed for 756 pesticides, their environmental transformation products and their human metabolites. Forty pesticides were quantified at mean concentrations up to 4.9 µg/L (tralkoxydim). The most abundant class was fungicides followed by herbicides, insect repellents, insecticides and plant growth regulators. In addition, pesticide transformation products and/or metabolites were detected with high frequency, indicating that research should be focused on them. Human exposure was evaluated using the wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) approach and 3-ethyl-carbamoyl benzoic acid and cis-1,2,3,6-tetrahydrophthalimide were proposed as potential WBE biomarkers. Wastewater analysis revealed the presence of unapproved pesticides and indicated that there is an urgent need to include more transformation products in target databases.

Suspect and target screening of emerging pesticides and their transformation products in an urban river using LC-QTOF-MS

This study sheds light on the occurrence of emerging pesticides and their transformation products (TPs) in an urban river in Beijing that is mainly supplemented with treated wastewater. To this end, suspect and non-target screening was conducted using a database of 557 commercial pesticides and over 1400 predicted TPs. Finally, 30 pesticides and 20 TPs were identified, with 12 pesticides and 10 TPs detected in all samples. Eleven pesticides and 17 TPs were detected in Beijing for the first time. Among these, 18 compounds were confirmed using authentic standards. Concentrations of the confirmed and suspected compounds were determined by quantification and semi-quantification, respectively, based on 18 authentic standards. Fungicides and their TPs constituted the largest group and exhibited the highest total concentration (26 compounds; 52.2 μg/L), followed by insecticides (14 compounds; 51.3 μg/L) and herbicides (10 compounds; 24.5 μg/L). DEET, carbendazim, prometryn, ω-carboxylic acid, 2-aminobenzimidazole, metolachlor TP, hexaconazole TP, metalaxyl TP, and azoxystrobin TP exhibited relatively high mean concentration (>100 ng/L). Among the 20 TPs, approximately 65% showed higher concentrations than their parent compounds. Correlation analysis revealed that 6 pesticides and 10 TPs in the river were mainly contributed by the discharge from a wastewater treatment plant. Although a majority of the emerging pesticides had low toxicity, 10 pesticides exhibited high risks to aquatic systems, especially invertebrates.

Profiles and risk assessment of legacy and current use pesticides in urban rivers in Beijing, China

Pesticides in the environment can pose serious risks to aquatic ecosystems. This study focused on the existence of 27 pesticides, including 13 pesticides regulated by the Stockholm Convention as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and 14 commonly used pesticides in three urban rivers in Beijing that receive effluents from three municipal wastewater treatment plants (MWTPs). Among the 27 pesticides, 12 were detected at least once over a period of 4 seasons. Atrazine, aldrin and dieldrin were universally found in the three rivers, with the highest concentrations being 311, 163 and 23.3 ng/L, respectively. HCHs, DDTs, heptachlor and endosulfan, which are POPs, were detected at lower concentrations (ND-16.7 ng/L). Most of the insecticides and some of the herbicides in the rivers originated from MWTP effluents. The risk assessment results showed that aldrin posed medium risk (0.1 ≤ RQ < 1) to fish, and atrazine exhibited medium risk to both fish and algae. Despite the implementation of the Stockholm Convention and the upgrades of MWTPs emitting ozone, high loads of aldrin, atrazine and dieldrin were discharged to the rivers. Efforts should be devoted to identifying POP pesticide sources and upgrading MWTPs with other technologies to ensure the ecological safety of rivers.

Genotoxicity of chloroacetamide herbicides and their metabolites in vitro and in vivo

The toxicity of chloroacetamide herbicide in embryo development remains unclear. Acetochlor (AC) is a chloroacetamide that metabolizes into 2‑ethyl‑6‑methyl-2-chloroacetanilide (CMEPA) and 6‑ethyl‑o‑toluidine (MEA). The present study determined the potential effect of AC and its metabolites on embryo development. Both HepG2 cells and zebrafish embryos were exposed to AC, CMEPA and MEA in the presence or absence of co‑treatment with anti‑reactive oxygen species (ROS) reagent N‑acetylcysteine. The generation of ROS, levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione (GSH) in HepG2 cells and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) leakage from HepG2 cells were investigated. The effects of AC, CMEPA and MEA on DNA breakage, MAPK/ERK pathway activity, viability and apoptosis of HepG2 cells were examined by comet assay, western blotting, MTT assay and flow cytometry, respectively. Levels of LDH, SOD and GSH in zebrafish embryos exposed to AC, CMEPA and MEA were measured. The hatching and survival rates of zebrafish embryos exposed to AC, CMEPA and MEA, were determined, and apoptosis of hatched fish was investigated using acridine orange staining. The present data showed AC, CMEPA and MEA induced generation of ROS and decreased levels of SOD and GSH in HepG2 cells, which in turn promoted DNA breakage and LDH leakage from cells, ultimately inhibiting cell viability and inducing apoptosis, as well as phosphorylation of JNK and P38. However, co‑treatment with N‑acetylcysteine alleviated the pro‑apoptosis effect of AC and its metabolites. Moreover, exposure to AC, CMEPA and MEA lead to toxicity of zebrafish embryos with decreased SOD and GSH and increased LDH levels and cell apoptosis, ultimately decreasing the hatching and survival rates of zebrafish, all of which was attenuated by treatment with N‑acetylcysteine. Therefore, AC and its metabolites (CMEPA and MEA) showed cytotoxicity and embryo development toxicity.

Developmental assays using invasive cane toads, Rhinella marina, reveal safety concerns of a common formulation of the rice herbicide, butachlor

Identifying the adverse impacts of pesticide exposure is essential to guide regulations that are protective of wildlife and human health. Within rice ecosystems, amphibians are valuable indicators because pesticide applications coincide with sensitive reproductive and developmental life stages. We conducted two experiments using wild cane toads (Rhinella marina) to test 1) whether environmentally relevant exposure to a commercial formulation of butachlor, an acetanilide herbicide used extensively in rice, affects amphibian development and 2) whether cane toad tadpoles are capable of acclimatizing to sub-lethal exposure. First, we exposed wild cane toads to 0.002, 0.02, or 0.2 mg/L of butachlor (Machete EC), during distinct development stages (as eggs and hatchlings, as tadpoles, or continuously) for 12 days. Next, we exposed a subset of animals from the first experiment to a second, lethal concentration and examined survivorship. We found that cane toads exposed to butachlor developed slower and weighed less than controls, and that development of the thyroid gland was affected: exposed individuals had smaller thyroid glands and thyrocyte cells, and more individual follicles. Analyses of the transcriptome revealed that butachlor exposure resulted in downregulation of transcripts related to metabolic processes, anatomic structure development, immune system function, and response to stress. Last, we observed evidence of acclimatization, where animals exposed to butachlor early in life performed better than naïve animals during a second exposure. Our findings indicate that the commercial formulation of butachlor, Machete EC, causes thyroid endocrine disruption in vertebrates, and suggest that exposure in lowland irrigated rice fields presents a concern for wildlife and human health. Furthermore, we establish that developmental assays with cane toads can be used to screen for adverse effects of pesticides in rice fields.

Effective abatement of 29 pesticides in full-scale advanced treatment processes of drinking water: From concentration to human exposure risk

This study investigated the occurrence and removal of 29 pesticides in 4 drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) with conventional and advanced treatment processes (i.e., ozonation + biological activated carbon, and ultrafiltration) in Shanghai, China from 2018 to 2019. The concentration levels of target pesticides in raw waters ranged from below the limit of quantification (<LOQ) to 2391.3 ng L^-1, whereas in finished waters significantly decreased to a range of <LOQ to 269 ng L^-1. The application of the advanced treatment process could effectively remove target pesticides. For example, the highest removal of isocarbophos after the advanced treatment process reached 94.6%, whereas its removal after the conventional treatment process was just 42.6%. The estimated daily intake level of target pesticides in finished water, which were pretty lower than acceptable daily intake levels in finished water, could be reduced by 67% if combining the conventional and advanced treatment processes. Although the multiple pesticides in raw waters were effectively removed by advanced treatment process, their synergistic toxic effects induced by the residual pesticides and their degradation by-products on human health deserve further attentions.

Distribution of organochlorine, organophosphates, carbamate, thiocarbamate, pyrethroids, and strobilurins in surface sediments of the Rio de Ondas watershed by GC-MS

The determination of some pesticides in surface sediments can provide important information about their distribution in the water column. This work aimed to determine the distribution of the classes of pesticides along the Ondas River's hydrographic basin (ORHB), in eighteen different points, during the dry and rainy periods. The pesticides were extracted from the sediment samples by solid-liquid extraction and then analyzed using a gas chromatograph coupled to mass spectrometry. After the development and validation of the method, nineteen pesticides from the group of organochlorine, organophosphates, carbamate and thiocarbamate, pyrethroids, and strobilurins were quantified in at least one point in the two collection periods, with accuracy varying between 86 and 126%. The average concentrations were 0.020 ng g^-1 (carbofuran) to 249.123 ng g^-1 (dimethoate) and 0.029 ng g^-1 (carbofuran and sulfotep) to 533.522 ng g^-1 in the dry and rainy periods, respectively. The results showed a wide distribution of pesticide residues in the ORHB, with higher levels for dimethoate, phenitrothion, and malathion, which may be related to their agricultural use in the region. In Brazil, it does not have specific legislation for maximum permitted values of pesticides in sediment, allowing for inappropriate or prohibited use and, consequently, affecting water quality.

Pesticide occurrence and water quality assessment from an agriculturally influenced Latin-American tropical region

A monitoring study was carried out in three agriculturally influenced microcatchments in Costa Rica during 2012-2014, for pesticides and water quality parameters. A total of 42 pesticides were analyzed, detecting the following in water samples: two herbicides (oxyfluorfen, diuron), four insecticides (carbofuran, chlorpyrifos, oxamyl, ethion), and two fungicides (thiabendazole, carbendazim); while in sediment samples only the insecticides, chlorpyrifos and cypermethrin were found. Water quality was also assessed by the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment Water Quality Index and the National Sanitation Water Quality Index, the first one classified most of the sampling point as marginal and poor quality while the second one classified most of them as good quality, the most affected parameters were nitrate, phosphorous, suspended solids and organic matter content. The results suggest that the water quality in the microcatchments seems to be affected by the nearby agricultural and urban activities in the region.

Chlorpyrifos removal: Nb/boron-doped diamond anode coupled with solid polymer electrolyte and ultrasound irradiation

Chlorpyrifos is an organophosphorus insecticide, acaricide and miticide used worldwide for the control of soil-borne insect pests. It must be considered as a substance of growing concern, given its use, toxicity, environmental occurrence, and potential for regional to long-range atmospheric transport. Considering the incomplete removal attained by conventional water treatment processes, we investigated the efficiency of electrolytic radicals production and sonoelectrolysis on the degradation of the pesticide. The treatment has been conducted in a novel electrochemical reactor, equipped with a boron-doped diamond anode and a solid polymer electrolyte (SPE). Different current intensity and times have been tested and coupled with sonication at 40 kHz. Up to 69% of chlorpyrifos was completely removed in 10 min by electrolysis operated at 0.1 mA, while 12.5% and 5.4% was converted into the treatment intermediates 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCP) and diethyl (3,5,6-trichloropyridin-2-yl) phosphate, respectively. Ultrasound irradiation did not enhance the removal efficiency, likely due to mass transport limitations, while the energy consumption increased from 8.68∙10- 6 to 9.34∙10- 4 kWh µg- 1 removed. Further research is encouraged, given the promising processing by the SPE technology of low conductivity solutions, as pharmaceuticals streams, as well as the potential for water and in-situ groundwater remediation from different emerging pollutants as phytosanitary and personal care products.

Occurrences of 29 pesticides in the Huangpu River, China: Highest ecological risk identified in Shanghai metropolitan area

To investigate the occurrence and risk of pesticides in the Huangpu River basin, spatial and temporal concentration variations of 29 commonly used pesticides and their risk quotient (RQ) values for three different trophic organisms (fish, daphnia, green algae) from 16 sampling sites were conducted in 2018-2019. These 29 pesticides include 4 carbamates, 2 benzimidazoles, 6 neonicotinoids, 2 organophosphates, 9 triazoles, and 6 others. Of the 29 pesticides analyzed, 18 were present in every sample taken from the Huangpu River. The concentration of target pesticides in water samples ranged from < LOQ (for buprofezin in summer, autumn, and winter) to 607.30 ng L^-1 (for carbendazim in spring). From the source (i.e., Taihu Lake) to the estuary of the Huangpu River, with the exception of isocarbophos and isoprothiolane (gradual decrease), the spatial variation of target pesticide concentrations firstly exhibited an increasing trend and then a decreasing trend. Peak spatial variation was seen in metropolitan area, which is closely related to the type of land use and the discharge of tributaries. In addition, the total summed concentration of the 29 pesticides during winter (1037.60 ng L^-1) was higher than summer (788.82 ng L^-1) in rural and metropolitan areas. For the ecological risk assessments of fish, daphnia, and green algae, the triazoles, carbamates, neonicotinoids were risk-dominant pesticides, respectively. Notably, carbendazim had a 100% detection frequency and the highest concentration of the 29 pesticides analyzed, indicating its high consumption in the Huangpu River basin.

Spatio-temporal distribution and ecological risk assessment of pesticides in the water resources of Abou Ali River, Northern Lebanon

The objective of this study is to assess the occurrence, spatial, and temporal distribution of forty-eight multiclass pesticides in surface and groundwater samples of the Abou Ali River, located in the North of Lebanon. A 3-year monitoring program (six batches from August 2015 to March 2017) was implemented, and thirty sampling points were selected along the river for analysis. The analysis was executed using a previously developed and optimized solid-phase micro-extraction (SPME) gas-chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method. Statistical analysis, using Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Kruskal-Wallis, and Dunnet T3 multiple comparison tests, was applied to compare mean concentrations of pesticides between the different sampling sites and the batches taken. The pesticides that had the highest frequency of detection in the surface and groundwater samples were alachlor, α-endosulfan, and methomyl. For surface water samples, high mean concentrations were perceived for two stations in the upper stream (S5 and S7), two stations (S11 and S14) in the middle stream, and one station (S16) in the lower stream of the river. The highest mean concentrations were observed in October 2015 and August 2016, the time of the year which correlates with the period of pesticide application. Considering groundwater samples, high mean concentrations of pesticides were detected in sites G4, G9, G10, and G12 and during October 2015 and March 2016, following the rainy season. Ecotoxicological risk assessment using the risk quotient (RQ) methodology revealed high risk for five pesticides under average conditions and fourteen under extreme conditions. This study presents, for the first time, a statistical analysis showing the quantification of pesticides in the water resources of the Abou Ali River. In conclusion, it reveals the need to apply a complete pesticide monitoring program, not only for the Abou Ali River but for all the water resources in Lebanon.

Health risk assessment of heavy metals and pesticides: A case study in the main drinking water source in Dalian, China

Health risk associated with drinking water has attracted increasing attention worldwide. Here, we conducted a survey on the main drinking water sources of Dalian in China to clarify the local human health risk associated with heavy metal and pesticide contaminants in the drinking water sources. The results showed that six heavy metals, namely, copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), arsenic (As), and mercury (Hg), and two pesticides (atrazine and acetochlor) were detected in water samples, where the highest concentration of Hg (0.0621 μg L^-1) exceeded the domestic standard only. In addition to the above-mentioned metals, Cr was also detected in the sediment/soil samples. As to the pesticides, atrazine, acetochlor, hexachlorobenzene, p,p'-DDE, and p,p'-DDD were detected in the sediment/soil samples at ng g^-1 levels, and atrazine and acetochlor were found in water samples at ng L^-1 levels. The human health risk assessment showed no marked difference in carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic risks from drinking water. Our study approved that hexachlorobenzene and arsenic were the main contributors to human carcinogenic risks, which were calculated at the level of 10^-4. Furthermore, sediment and soil ingestion was considered as the major source of human health risk in our study area. This study revealed the current pollution status in the surrounding area of the drinking water source and the main source associated with human health risk, which established a sound basis for further decision-making to take necessary action on pollution control.
