Pharmaceutically active compounds removal from aqueous solutions by MIL-101(Cr)-NH2: A molecular dynamics study

Discharging pharmaceutically active drugs into water and wastewater has become a significant environmental threat. Traditional methods are unable to effectively remove these compounds from wastewater, so it is necessary to search for more effective methods. This study investigates the potential of MIL-101(Cr)-NH2 as a preferable and more effective adsorbent for the adsorption and removal of pharmaceutically active compounds from aqueous solutions. By utilizing its large porosity, high specific surface area, and high stability, the structural and transport properties of three pharmaceutically active compounds naproxen (NAP), diclofenac (DIC) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX)) studied using molecular dynamics simulation. The results indicate that the MIL-101(Cr)-NH2 adsorbent is suitable for removing drug molecules from aqueous solutions, with maximum adsorption capacities of 697.75 mg/g for naproxen, 704.99 mg/g for diclofenac, and 725.51 mg/g for sulfamethoxazole.

Glyco-conjugated metal-organic framework biosensor for fluorescent detection of bacteria

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are hybrid materials constructed by the linkage between an inorganic secondary building unit and an organic linker. A number of MOFs are luminescent in nature and can be structurally tuned for desirable geometry, surface functionality, and porosity. Luminescent MOFs have been endorsed for various biosensing applications. Lectins and carbohydrates have been used for the development of simple and convenient biosensing and bioimaging tools. Lectins are mostly present on the surface of microorganisms where they aid in pathogenesis. Due to this, they can be potential targets for a microbial biosensor. The present study, for the first time, explores the usage of a carbohydrate-conjugated FeMOF (Glyco-MOF) bioprobe for the selective determination of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. NH₂-MIL-53(Fe) MOF was synthesized via a room temperature protocol and separately conjugated with galactose and mannose sugars via glutaraldehyde chemistry. The synthesized bioprobe is validated for structural integrity, luminescent nature, stability, and analyte assay. Electron microscopy studies validated the unhindered MOF's morphology and structural integrity, after bioconjugation. The synthesized bioprobes were able to detect P. aeruginosa and E. coli up to respective detection limits of 202 and 8 CFU/mL, respectively. The bioprobes are selective even in co-presence of possible interferants as well as being environmentally stable.

In-situ hydrothermal synthesis of CNT decorated by nano ZnS/CuO for simultaneous removal of acid food dyes from binary water samples

The zinc sulfide/copper oxide–carbon nanotube nanocomposite (ZnS/CuO-CNT) was fabricated by using an in-situ hydrothermal synthesis method and was used for simultaneous ultrasound-assisted adsorptive removal of a binary mixture of ponceau 4R (P4R) and tartrazine (TA) acid food dyes from contaminated water. The as-synthesized ZnS/CuO-CNT was described by FESEM, XRD, FTIR, BET, and zeta potential analysis. The results included nested network morphology, high purity with the crystalline structure, oxygen-containing functional groups, mesoporous/micropores texture with cumulate interspace, specific surface area of 106.54 m² g^-1, and zero-point charge (pH_zpc) of 5.3. In adsorption experiments, the simultaneous effect of main independent variables, including solution pH, adsorbent dosage, concentration of each dye, temperature, and sonication time on the removal efficiency of dyes was studied systematically using the central composite design (CCD) method based on response surface methodology (RSM). Also, the second-order multivariate equation was presented to determine the relationship between the removal efficiencies of P4R and AT dyes and six independent effective variables. The high correlation coefficient (R² ≥ 0.99), significant p-value (P < 0.0001), and non-significant lack-of-fit (P > 0.05) showed the high accuracy, and validity of the proposed model to predict the removal efficiency of P4R and TA acid food dyes. The experimental removal efficiency for P4R and TA dyes was found to be 98.45 ± 2.54, and 99.21 ± 2.23, respectively. Also, the Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity for P4R and TA dyes was determined to be 190.1 mg g^-1 and 183.5 mg g^-1, respectively. Finally, the adsorbent's reusability was tested for six periods and could be reused repeatedly without significant reduction in adsorption performance.

Design, synthesis, and characterization of a novel Zn(II)-2-phenyl benzimidazole framework for the removal of organic dyes

A novel Zn (II) organic framework comprising 2-phenyl benzimidazole (ZPBIF-1) was synthesized by using a solvothermal method. The characterization of the synthesized MOF was performed utilizing XRD, SEM, FT-IR, ¹H-NMR, ¹³C-NMR, MS, XPS, TG/DTA, and N₂ sorption analysis. ZPBIF-1 was successfully utilized to remove Acid red 88, Basic Violet 14, Basic Blue 54, and Congo red dyes in aqueous solutions. In this study, some parameters, including adsorbent dosage, initial dye concentration, contact time, temperature, and pH, were examined. To evaluate the experimental data, Freundlich, Langmuir, Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models were used. In this case, Langmuir is the most suitable model. Several kinetic models, including First-order, pseudo-first-order, second-order, and Pseudo-second-order kinetic models, Elovich's, and Weber's intraparticle diffusion models, were utilized to comprehend the detailed adsorption process. According to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, dye sorption kinetics is best described. In addition, thermodynamic parameters like enthalpy (ΔH°), Gibbs free energy (ΔG°), and entropy (ΔS°) were also achieved and analyzed. The experimental studies thus suggest that Zn (II) metal-organic framework based on 2-phenyl benzimidazole could be a promising candidate for eliminating dyes from aqueous solution. The maximum adsorption capacity of ZPBIF-1 was 1666.66, 1250, 1000, and 1250 mg/g for Acid red 88, Basic violet 14, Basic blue 54, and Congo red dyes, respectively. Furthermore, this method was used to remove contaminant dyes from textile wastewater, and an acceptable result was obtained.

Sulfonated graphene oxide impregnated cellulose acetate floated beads for adsorption of methylene blue dye: optimization using response surface methodology

New multi-featured adsorbent beads were fabricated through impregnation of sulfonated graphene (SGO) oxide into cellulose acetate (CA) beads for fast adsorption of cationic methylene blue (MB) dye. The formulated SGO@CA composite beads were thoroughly characterized by several tools including FTIR, TGA, SEM, XRD, XPS and zeta potential. The optimal levels of the most significant identified variables affecting the adsorption process were sequential determined by the response surface methodology (RSM) using Plackett–Burman and Box–Behnken designs. The gained results denoted that the surface of SGO@CA beads displayed the higher negative charges (− 42.2 mV) compared to − 35.7 and − 38.7 mV for pristine CA and SGO, respectively. In addition, the floated SGO@CA beads demonstrated excellent floating property, fast adsorption and easy separation. The adsorption performance was accomplished rapidly, since the adsorption equilibrium was closely gotten within 30 min. Furthermore, the adsorption capacity was greatly improved with increasing SGO content from 10 to 30%. The obtained data were followed the pseudo-second order kinetic model and agreed with Langmuir adsorption isotherm model with a maximum adsorption capacity reached 234.74 mg g⁻¹. The thermodynamic studies designated the spontaneity and endothermic nature of MB dye adsorption. Besides, the floated beads exposed acceptable adsorption characteristics for six successive reuse cycles, in addition to their better adsorption selectivity towards MB dye compared to cationic crystal violet and anionic Congo red dyes. These findings assume that the formulated SGO@CA floated beads could be used effectively as highly efficient, easy separable and reusable adsorbents for the fast removal of toxic cationic dyes.

Facile Fabrication of Novel NiFe2O4@Carbon Composites for Enhanced Adsorption of Emergent Antibiotics

Water purification is becoming one of the most pertinent environmental issues throughout the world. Among common types of water pollution involving heavy metals, pharmaceutical drugs, textile dyes, personal care products, and other persistent organic pollutants, the pollution of antibiotic drugs is increasingly emerging due to their adverse effects on microorganisms, aquatic animals, and human health. Therefore, the treatment of such contaminants is very necessary to reduce the concentration of antibiotic pollutants to permissible levels prior to discharge. Herein, we report the use of NiFe₂O₄@C composites from a bimetallic-based metal-organic framework Ni-MIL-88B(Fe) for removal of ciprofloxacin (CFX) and tetracycline (TCC). The effect of production temperatures (600–900 °C), solution pH (2–10), NiFe₂O₄@C dose (0.05–0.2 g/L), concentration of antibiotics (10–60 mg/L), and uptake time (0–480 min) was investigated systematically. Response surface methodology and central composite design were applied for quadratic models to discover optimum conditions of antibiotic adsorption. With high coefficients of determination (R² = 0.9640–0.9713), the proposed models were significant statistically. Under proposed optimum conditions, the adsorption capacity for CFX and TCC were found at 256.244, and 105.38 mg/g, respectively. Recyclability study was employed and found that NiFe₂O₄@C-900 could be reused for up to three cycles, offering the potential of this composite as a good adsorbent for removal of emergent antibiotics.

Preparation of molecularly imprinted resin/polydopamine nanofibers mat for the highly efficient extraction and determination of sulfonamides in environmental water

With polyacrylonitrile nanofibers mat (PAN NFsM) as a template, molecularly imprinted resin/polydopamine nanofibers mat (MIR/PDA NFsM) was synthesized for the extraction of sulfonamides (SAs) in water. The specific surface area and pore volume were increased obviously due to the functionalization of MIR. The adsorption efficiencies of MIR/PDA NFsM under optimized conditions for SAs were 92.3-99.3%. Possible adsorption mechanisms of imprinting recognition and hydrogen bond interactions were also put forward. Compared with MIR particles, the MIR/PDA NFsM exhibited much superior adsorption performance. Particularly, the outstanding mass transfer efficiency of MIR/PDA NFsM was much higher than the other reported adsorbents for SAs. Finally, a new method based on the solid-phase extraction (SPE) of MIR/PDA NFsM was successfully developed for the detection of five SAs in environmental water with HPLC-MS/MS and applied to the analysis of actual samples. Under the selected conditions, the enrichment factors of MIR/PDA NFsM of SCP, SMT, SMZ, SMR, and SMX were between 23.0 and 25.0. Low detection limits (0.26-0.76 ng L^-1), broad linear range (1.0 ng L^-1 to 10.0 μg L^-1), and satisfactory recoveries (82.8-115.6%) and precisions (RSDs < 7.2%) were obtained. Moreover, the excellent reusability properties and storage stability endowed MIR/PDA NFsM with great value for practical applications.

Multifunctional ZnO nanoparticles bio-fabricated from Canna indica L. flowers for seed germination, adsorption, and photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes

The potential of green nanomaterials for environmental and agricultural fields is emerging due to their biocompatible, eco-friendly, and cost-effective performance. We report the use of Canna indica flowers extract as new capping and stabilizing source to bio-fabricate ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs for dyes removal, seed germination. ZnO NPs was biosynthesized by ultrasound-assisted alkaline-free route to reach the critical green strategy. The physicochemical findings of ZnO revealed small crystallite size (27.82 nm), sufficient band-gap energy (3.08 eV), and diverse functional groups. Minimum‑run resolution IV approach found the most pivotal factors influencing on removal of Coomassie Brilliant Blue G-250. Uptake studies pointed out that pseudo second-order, and Langmuir were the best fitted models. Dye molecules behaved monolayer adsorption on ZnO surface layers, and controlled by chemisorption. Natural solar light was used as effective source for photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (94.23% of removal and 31.09 mg/g of uptake capacity). Compared with H₂O and ZnSO₄, ZnO NPs positively affected the growth of shoot and root lengths (10.2-27.8%) of bean seedlings in most cases. ZnO acts an agrochemical for boosting weight gain, and germination ratio. This study may be promising for developing the recyclable, multifunctional ZnO nanoparticles for environmental and agricultural applications.

Eco-friendly Transformation of Waste Biomass to Biofuels

Background:

The development of viable alternative fuel sources is assuming a new urgency in the face of climate change and environmental degradation linked to the escalating consumption of fossil fuels. Lignocellulosic biomass is composed primarily of high-energy structural components such as cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. The transformation of lignocellulosic biomass to biofuels requires the application of both pretreatment and conversion technologies.

Methods:

Several pretreatment technologies (e.g. physical, chemical and biological) are used to recover cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin from biomass and begin the transformation into biofuels. This paper reviews the thermochemical (e.g. pyrolysis, gasification and liquefaction), hydrothermal (e.g. subcritical and supercritical water gasification and hydrothermal liquefaction), and biological (e.g. fermentation) conversion pathways that are used to further transform biomass feedstocks into fuel products.

Results:

Through several thermochemical and biological conversion technologies, lignocellulosic biomass and other organic residues can produce biofuels such as bio-oils, biochar, syngas, biohydrogen, bioethanol and biobutanol, all of which have the potential to replace hydrocarbon-based fossil fuels.

Conclusions:

This review paper describes the conversion technologies used in the transformation of biomass into viable biofuels. Biofuels produced from lignocellulosic biomass and organic wastes are a promising potential clean energy source with the potential to be carbon-neutral or even carbonnegative.

Optimization, equilibrium, adsorption behavior and role of surface functional groups on graphene oxide-based nanocomposite towards diclofenac drug

Aquatic contamination of diclofenac (DCF), an emergent non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAIDs), can result in adverse effects to many ecosystems through biomagnification. Hence, introducing effective remediation techniques to sequester the pharmaceutical wastes is highly fundamental to prevent their accumulation in the environment. Generally, adsorption has been presented as a green and efficient approach. Herein, we report the characterization and application of the novel magnetic nanocomposite (GO@CoFe₂O₄) derived from cobalt-based ferrite (CoFe₂O₄) and graphene oxide (GO) for DCF adsorption. For the optimization procedure, the response surface methodology (RSM) was adopted to investigate the impacts of DCF concentration (1.6-18.4 mg/L), DCF dosage (0.08-0.92 g/L), and solution pH (2.6-9.4) to find the optimum conditions for DCF removal, at 10.5 mg/L, 0.74 g/L, and pH 4, respectively. For the adsorption experiments, the kinetic, isotherm, thermodynamic, and intraparticle diffusion models were systematically studied. Moreover, we have elucidated the role of functional groups on the surface of GO@CoFe₂O₄ in enhancing the adsorption of DCF drug. With good removal efficiency (up to 86.1%), high maximum adsorption capacity (32.4 mg/g), GO@CoFe₂O₄ can be a potential candidate to eliminate DCF drug from water.

Bioplastic (poly-3-hydroxybutyrate) production by the marine bacterium Pseudodonghicola xiamenensis through date syrup valorization and structural assessment of the biopolymer

Biobased degradable plastics have received significant attention owing to their potential application as a green alternative to synthetic plastics. A dye-based procedure was used to screen poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB)-producing marine bacteria isolated from the Red Sea, Saudi Arabia. Among the 56 bacterial isolates, Pseudodonghicola xiamenensis, identified using 16S rRNA gene analyses, accumulated the highest amount of PHB. The highest PHB production by P. xiamenensis was achieved after 96 h of incubation at pH 7.5 and 35 °C in the presence of 4% NaCl, and peptone was the preferred nitrogen source. The use of date syrup at 4% (w/v) resulted in a PHB concentration of 15.54 g/L and a PHB yield of 38.85% of the date syrup, with a productivity rate of 0.162 g/L/h, which could substantially improve the production cost. Structural assessment of the bioplastic by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy revealed the presence of methyl, hydroxyl, methine, methylene, and ester carbonyl groups in the extracted polymer. The derivative products of butanoic acid estimated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry [butanoic acid, 2-amino-4-(methylseleno), hexanoic acid, 4-methyl-, methyl ester, and hexanedioic acid, monomethyl ester] confirmed the structure of PHB. The present results are the first report on the production of a bioplastic by P. xiamenensis, suggesting that Red Sea habitats are a potential biological reservoir for novel bioplastic-producing bacteria.

CoFe2O4 Nanomaterials: Effect of Annealing Temperature on Characterization, Magnetic, Photocatalytic, and Photo-Fenton Properties

In this research, structural, magnetic properties and photocatalytic activity of cobalt ferrite spinel (CoFe2O4) nanoparticles were studied. The samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and UV-visible diffused reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) analysis. The XRD analysis revealed the formation of the single-phase CoFe2O4 with a cubic structure that is annealed at 500–700 °C in 3 h. The optical band gap energy for CoFe2O4 was determined to be in the range of 1.57–2.03 eV. The effect on the magnetic properties of cobalt ferrites was analyzed by using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The particle size and the saturation magnetization of cobalt ferrite nanoparticles increased with increasing annealing temperature. The photocatalytic activity of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles was investigated by using rhodamine B dye under visible light. The decomposition of rhodamine B reached 90.6% after 270 min lighting with the presence of H2O2 and CF500 sample.
