Urban soil phytomanagement for Zn and Cd in situ removal, greening, and Zn-rich biomass production taking care of snail exposure

Development of simplified probabilistic models for predicting phytoextraction timeframes of soil contaminants: demonstration at the DDX-contaminated Kolleberga tree nursery in Sweden

Phytoextraction, utilizing plants to remove soil contaminants, is a promising approach for environmental remediation but its application is often limited due to the long time requirements. This study aims to develop simplified and user-friendly probabilistic models to estimate the time required for phytoextraction of contaminants while considering uncertainties. More specifically we: i) developed probabilistic models for time estimation, ii) applied these models using site-specific data from a field experiment testing pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo ssp. pepo cv. Howden) for phytoextraction of DDT and its metabolites (ΣDDX), iii) compared timeframes derived from site-specific data with literature-derived estimates, and iv) investigated model sensitivity and uncertainties through various modelling scenarios. The models indicate that phytoextraction with pumpkin to reduce the initial total concentration of ΣDDX in the soil (10 mg/kg dw) to acceptable levels (1 mg/kg dw) at the test site is infeasible within a reasonable timeframe, with time estimates ranging from 48-123 years based on literature data or 3 570-9 120 years with site-specific data using the linear or first-order exponential model, respectively. Our results suggest that phytoextraction may only be feasible at lower initial ΣDDX concentrations (< 5 mg/kg dw) for soil polishing and that alternative phytomanagement strategies should be considered for this test site to manage the bioavailable fraction of DDX in the soil. The simplified modes presented can be useful tools in the communication with site owners and stakeholders about time approximations for planning phytoextraction interventions, thereby improving the decision basis for phytomanagement of contaminated sites.

Drivers to improve metal(loid) phytoextraction with a focus on microbial degradation of dissolved organic matter in soils

Bioaugmentation of soils can increase the mobilization of metal(loid)s from the soil-bearing phases. However, once desorbed, these metal(loid)s are mostly complexed to the dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the soil solution, which can restrict their availability to plants (roots mainly taking up the free forms) and then the phytoextraction performances. Firstly the main drivers influencing phytoextraction are reminded, then the review focuses on the DOM role. After having reminding the origin, the chemical structure and the lability of DOM, the pool of stable DOM (the most abundant in the soil) most involved in the complexation of metal(loid)s is addressed in particular by focusing on carboxylic and/or phenolic groups and factors controlling metal(loid) complexation with DOM. Finally, this review addresses the ability of microorganisms to degrade metal(loid)-DOM complexes as an additional lever for increasing the pool of free metal(loid) ions, and then phytoextraction performances, and details the origin of microorganisms and how they are selected. The development of innovative processes including the use of these DOM-degrading microorganisms is proposed in perspectives.

Can mollusks or insects serve as bioindicators of the risk element polluted area? Gastropods (Gastropoda) versus leaf beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae)

Two groups of invertebrates, terrestrial mollusks (Gastropoda) and Chrysomela populi leaf beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), were sampled to estimate the suitability of these organisms as bioindicators of risk element pollution (predominantly Cd, Pb, and Zn) alongside the risk element concentration gradient in the contaminated area (former mining/smelting areas in the vicinity of Příbram city, Central Bohemia, Czech Republic). The individuals representing ten species of terrestrial snails and imagoes of C. populi were collected manually at five sampling sites, differing in the level of soil contamination with risk elements. The findings showed high variability of the results regardless of the element determined, animal species, and sampling location. Among the elements, higher accumulation ability was observed for Cd and Zn, given the higher bioaccessibility of these elements in soils compared to Pb, Cr, and Cu. Higher Cd and Zn accumulation in the soft tissues of gastropods (without any statistically significant differences among the species) compared to C. populi was also recorded. Medians of the bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) reached up to 33.2 for Cd and 5.8 for Zn, in gastropods while reaching up to 3.4 for Cd, and 2.3 for Zn, for C. populi. For both groups of organisms, paradoxically, a higher rate of accumulation of risk elements was observed in all analyzed organisms in sites with lower soil contamination compared to heavily contaminated sites. This indicated the ability of the organisms living in extreme conditions to avoid the uptake of these elements or to move among areas of different contamination levels. Thus, terrestrial gastropods and C. populi proved to be unsuitable bioindicators for assessing soil pollution.

Field evaluation of industrial non-food crops for phytomanaging a metal-contaminated dredged sediment

Phytomanagement is a concept fit for a bio-based circular economy that combines phytotechnologies and biomass production for non-food purposes. Here, ten annual and perennial industrial non-food crops (Sorghum Biomass 133, Sorghum Santa Fe red, Linum usitatissimum L., Eucalyptus sp., Salix Inger, Salix Tordis, Beta vulgaris L., Phacelia tanacetifolia Benth., Malva sylvestris L., and Chenopodium album L.) were studied under field conditions for phytomanaging a metal (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn)-contaminated dredged sediment in the North of France. The crops were selected according to their relevance to pedoclimatic and future climatic conditions, and one or more non-food end-products were proposed for each plant part collected, such as biogas, bioethanol, compost, natural dye, ecocatalyst, and fiber. Based on the soil-plant transfer of metals, eight out of the crops cultivated on field plots exhibited an excluder behavior (bioconcentration factor, BCF < 1), a trait suitable for phytostabilization. However, these crops did not change the metal mobilities in the dredged sediment. The BCF < 1 was not sufficient to characterize the excluder behavior of crops as this factor depended on the total dredged-sediment contaminant. Therefore, a BCF group ranking method was proposed accounting for metal phytotoxicity levels or yield decrease as a complemental way to discuss the crop behavior. The feasibility of the biomass-processing chains was discussed based on these results and according to a survey of available legislation in standard and scientific literature.

The Effect of "Production during Remediation" of Plants in Cd-Contaminated Soil

In order to find suitable plants for "production during remediation" in wheat fields moderately contaminated by cadmium (Cd), five plants-green amaranth, oil sunflower, broomcorn, maize, and waxy maize-were planted in pots to study their enrichment characteristics and remediation effects in Cd-contaminated soil. The results showed that the highest bioaccumulation and translocation factors were greater than 0.5 for oil sunflower, which had the strongest Cd-enrichment ability in Cd-contaminated soil, but its biomass was small, and the Cd content of the grain exceeded the standard (GB2762-2017). The Cd content in the grains of broomcorn, maize, and waxy maize was less than 0.1 mg∙kg^-1, which is lower than the national food safety standard on limiting pollutants in food (GB2762-2017). Broomcorn accumulated 0.429 mg∙pot^-1 for Cd, with a Cd-extraction efficiency of 1.73%, which were higher than other plants. Taking the risk-screening values in GB15618-2018 "Soil Environmental Quality Standard" as the target, it will take 80 years to remediate using broomcorn, which has the highest extraction efficiency, based on cultivating remediation plants once per year. However, in view of the scarcity of arable land resources in China and the objective of safe production during remediation, the use of broomcorn can be considered for production during remediation for the given degree of Cd contamination of the soil.

Green and Effective Preparation of α-Hydroxyphosphonates by Ecocatalysis

A green and effective approach for the synthesis of structurally diversed α-hydroxyphosphonates via hydrophosphonylation of aldehydes under solventless conditions and promoted by biosourced catalysts, called ecocatalysts "Eco-MgZnOx" is presented. Ecocatalysts were prepared from Zn-hyperaccumulating plant species Arabidopsis halleri, with simple and benign thermal treatment of leaves rich in Zn, and without any further chemical treatment. The elemental composition and structure of Eco-MgZnOx were characterized by MP-AES, XRPD, HRTEM, and STEM-EDX techniques. These analyses revealed a natural richness in two unusual and valuable mixed zinc-magnesium and iron-magnesium oxides. The ecocatalysts were employed in this study to demonstrate their potential use in hydrophosphonylation of aldehydes, leading to various α-hydroxyphosphonate derivatives, which are critical building blocks in the modern chemical industry. Computational chemistry was performed to help discriminate the role of some of the constituents of the mixed oxide ecocatalysts. High conversions, broad substrate scope, mild reaction conditions, and easy purification of the final products together with simplicity of the preparation of the ecocatalysts are the major advantages of the presented protocol. Additionally, Eco-MgZnOx-P could be recovered and reused for up to five times.

Potential ability of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) to phytomanage an urban brownfield soil

The ability of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. Badischer Geudertheimer) for phytomanaging and remediating soil ecological functions at a contaminated site was assessed with a potted soil series made by fading an uncontaminated sandy soil with a contaminated sandy soil from the Borifer brownfield site, Bordeaux, SW France, at the 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% addition rates. Activities of sandblasting and painting with metal-based paints occurred for decades at this urban brownfield, polluting the soil with metal(loid)s and organic contaminants, e.g., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, in addition to past backfilling. Total topsoil metal(loid)s (e.g., 54,700 mg Zn and 5060 mg Cu kg-1) exceeded by seven- to tenfold the background values for French sandy soils, but the soil pH was 7.9, and overall, the 1M NH4NO3 extractable soil fractions of metals were relatively low. Leaf area, water content of shoots, and total chlorophyll (Chl) progressively decreased with the soil contamination, but the Chl fluorescence remained constant near its optimum value. Foliar Cu and Zn concentrations varied from 17.8 ± 4.2 (0%) to 27 ± 5 mg Cu kg-1 (100%) and from 60 ± 15 (0%) to 454 ± 53 mg Zn kg-1 (100%), respectively. Foliar Cd concentration peaked up to 1.74 ± 0.09 mg Cd kg-1, and its bioconcentration factor had the highest value (0.2) among those of the metal(loid)s. Few nutrient concentrations in the aboveground plant parts decreased with the soil contamination, e.g., foliar P concentration from 5972 ± 1026 (0%) to 2861 ± 334 mg kg-1 (100%). Vulnerability to drought-induced embolism (P50) did not differ for the tobacco stems across the soil series, whereas their hydraulic efficiency (Ks) declined significantly with increasing soil contamination. Overall, this tobacco cultivar grew relatively well even in the Borifer soil (100%), keeping its photosynthetic system healthy under stress, and contaminant exposure did not increase the vulnerability of the vascular system to drought. This tobacco had a relevant potential to annually phytoextract a part of the bioavailable soil Zn and Cd, i.e., shoot removals representing here 8.8% for Zn and 43.3% for Cd of their 1M NH4NO3 extractable amount in the potted Borifer soil.

In situ and ex situ bioassays with Cantareus aspersus for environmental risk assessment of metal(loid) and PAH-contaminated soils

Environmental risk assessment of contaminated soils requires bioindicators that allow the assessment of bioavailability and toxicity of chemicals. Although many bioassays can determine the ecotoxicity of soil samples in the laboratory, few are available and standardized for on-site application. Bioassays based on specific threshold values that assess the in situ and ex situ bioavailability and risk of metal(loid)s and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soils to the land snail Cantareus aspersus have never been simultaneously applied to the same soils. The aims of this study were to compare the results provided by in situ and ex situ bioassays and to determine their respective importance for environmental risk assessment. The feasibility and reproducibility of the in situ bioassay were assessed using an international ring test. This study used five plots located at a former industrial site and six laboratories participated in the ring test. The results revealed the impact of environmental parameters on the bioavailability of metal(loid)s and PAHs to snails exposed in the field to structured soils and vegetation compared to those exposed under laboratory conditions to soil collected from the same field site (excavated soils). The risk coefficients were generally higher ex situ than in situ, with some exceptions (mainly due to Cd and Mo), which might be explained by the in situ contribution of plants and humus layer as sources of exposure of snails to contaminants and by climatic parameters. The ring test showed good agreement among laboratories, which determined the same levels of risk in most of the plots. Comparison of the bioavailability to land snails and the subsequent risk estimated in situ or ex situ highlighted the complementarity between both approaches in the environmental risk assessment of contaminated soils, namely, to guide decisions on the fate and future use of the sites (e.g., excavation, embankments, and land restoration). Phytoextraction of Zn and Cd with Arabidopsis halleri: a focus on fertilization and biological amendment as a means of increasing biomass and Cd and Zn concentrations

The current work aims to investigate the influence of fertilization (fertilizer) and fungal inoculation (Funneliformis mosseae and Serendipita indica (formerly Piriformospora indica), respectively arbuscular mycorrhizal (AMF) and endophytic fungi) on the phytoextraction potential of Arabidopsis halleri (L.) O'Kane & Al-Shehbaz (biomass yield and/or aboveground part Zn and Cd concentrations) over one life plant cycle. The mycorrhizal rates of A. halleri were measured in situ while the fungal inoculation experiments were carried out under controlled conditions. For the first time, it is demonstrated that the fertilizer used on A. halleri increased its biomass not only at the rosette stage but also at the flowering and fruiting stages. Fertilizer reduced the Zn concentration variability between developmental stages and increased the Cd concentration at fruiting stage. A. halleri roots did not show AMF colonization at any stage in our field conditions, neither in the absence nor in the presence of fertilizer, thus suggesting that A. halleri is not naturally mycorrhizal. Induced mycorrhization agreed with this result. However, S. indica has been shown to successfully colonize A. halleri roots under controlled conditions. This study confirms the benefit of using fertilizer to increase the phytoextraction potential of A. halleri. Overall, these results contribute to the future applicability of A. halleri in a phytomanagement strategy by giving information on its cultural itinerary.

Water and soil contaminated by arsenic: the use of microorganisms and plants in bioremediation

Owing to their roles in the arsenic (As) biogeochemical cycle, microorganisms and plants offer significant potential for developing innovative biotechnological applications able to remediate As pollutions. This possible use in bioremediation processes and phytomanagement is based on their ability to catalyse various biotransformation reactions leading to, e.g. the precipitation, dissolution, and sequestration of As, stabilisation in the root zone and shoot As removal. On the one hand, genomic studies of microorganisms and their communities are useful in understanding their metabolic activities and their interaction with As. On the other hand, our knowledge of molecular mechanisms and fate of As in plants has been improved by laboratory and field experiments. Such studies pave new avenues for developing environmentally friendly bioprocessing options targeting As, which worldwide represents a major risk to many ecosystems and human health.
