Metals pollution from textile production wastewater in Chinese southeastern coastal area: occurrence, source identification, and associated risk assessment

Growth-dependent cr(VI) reduction by Alteromonas sp. ORB2 under haloalkaline conditions: toxicity, removal mechanism and effect of heavy metals

Bacterial reduction of hexavalent chromium (VI) to chromium (III) is a sustainable bioremediation approach. However, the Cr(VI) containing wastewaters are often characterized with complex conditions such as high salt, alkaline pH and heavy metals which severely impact the growth and Cr(VI) reduction potential of microorganisms. This study investigated Cr(VI) reduction under complex haloalkaline conditions by an Alteromonas sp. ORB2 isolated from aerobic granular sludge cultivated from the seawater-microbiome. Optimum growth of Alteromonas sp. ORB2 was observed under haloalkaline conditions at 3.5-9.5% NaCl and pH 7-11. The bacterial growth in normal culture conditions (3.5% NaCl; pH 7.6) was not inhibited by 100 mg/l Cr(VI)/ As(V)/ Pb(II), 50 mg/l Cu(II) or 5 mg/l Cd(II). Near complete reduction of 100 mg/l Cr(VI) was achieved within 24 h at 3.5-7.5% NaCl and pH 8-11. Cr(VI) reduction by Alteromonas sp. ORB2 was not inhibited by 100 mg/L As(V), 100 mg/L Pb(II), 50 mg/L Cu(II) or 5 mg/L Cd(II). The bacterial cells grew in the medium with 100 mg/l Cr(VI) contained lower esterase activity and higher reactive oxygen species levels indicating toxicity and oxidative stress. In-spite of toxicity, the cells grew and reduced 100 mg/l Cr(VI) completely within 24 h. Cr(VI) removal from the medium was driven by bacterial reduction to Cr(III) which remained in the complex medium. Cr(VI) reduction was strongly linked to aerobic growth of Alteromonas sp. The Cr(VI) reductase activity of cytosolic protein fraction was pronounced by supplementing with NADPH in vitro assays. This study demonstrated a growth-dependent aerobic Cr(VI) reduction by Alteromonas sp. ORB2 under complex haloalkaline conditions akin to wastewaters.

Selective removal of copper (II) ions from aqueous solution using pyridyl-bridged mesoporous organosilica hybrid adsorbent

The incorporation of active functional groups into the mesoporous organosilica hybrid materials is efficient for various applications. A newly designed mesoporous organosilica adsorbent was prepared using diaminopyridyl groups bridged-(bis-trimethoxy)organosilane (DAPy) precursor by using Pluronic P123 as structure directing template via sol-gel co-condensation method. The hydrolysis reaction of DAPy precursor and tetraethyl orthosilacate (TEOS) with a DAPy content of about 20 mol% to TEOS were incorporated into the mesopore walls of the mesoporous organosilica hybrid nanoparticles (DAPy@MSA NPs). Low-angle XRD and FT-IR, N₂ adsorption-desorption analysis, SEM, TEM, and TG analysis were used to characterize the synthesized DAPy@MSA NPs. The DAPy@MSA NPs exhibit an order mesoporous structure with a high surface area, mesopore size and pore volume of approximately ∼465 m²/g, 4.4 nm and 0.48 cm³/g, respectively. The pyridyl groups integrated DAPy@MSA NPs showed the selective adsorption of Cu²⁺ ions from the aqueous medium by metal-ligand complex coordination of Cu²⁺ ions with the integrated pyridyl groups and the pendant hydroxyl (-OH) functional groups present into the mesopore walls of the DAPy@MSA NPs. In the presence of other competitive metal ions (Cr²⁺, Cd²⁺, Ni²⁺, Zn²⁺, and Fe²⁺), the DAPy@MSA NPs showed relatively high adsorption of Cu²⁺ ions (276 mg/g) from aqueous solution as compared to the other competitive metal ions at the same concentration (100 mg/L) of initial metal ion solution.

Environmental sustainability assessment of a polyester T-shirt - Comparison of circularity strategies

The considerable environmental burden of textiles is currently globally recognized. This burden can be mitigated by applying circular economy (CE) strategies to the commonly linear, short garment life cycles that end with incineration or landfill disposal. Even though all CE strategies strive to promote environmental sustainability, they might not be equally beneficial. Environmental data on different textile products is insufficiently available, which leads to complications when assessing and deciding on different CE strategies to be implemented. This paper studies the environmental impacts of a polyester T-shirt's linear life cycle through life cycle assessment (LCA) and evaluates the benefits attainable by adopting different CE strategies, and their order of priority, while noting uncertainty arising from poor data quality or unavailability. The LCA is complemented by assessing health and environmental risks related to the different options. Most of the linear life cycle's LCA-based impacts arise from use-phase washing. Hence, it is possible to reduce the environmental impact notably (37 %) by reducing the washing frequency. Adopting a CE strategy in which the shirt is reused by a second consumer, to double the number of uses, enables an 18 % impact reduction. Repurposing recycled materials to produce the T-shirt and recycling the T-shirt material itself emerged as the least impactful CE strategies. From the risk perspective, reusing the garment is the most efficient way to reduce environmental and health risks while washing frequency has a very limited effect. Combining different CE strategies offers the greatest potential for reducing both environmental impacts as well as risks. Data gaps and assumptions related to the use phase cause the highest uncertainty in the LCA results. To gain the maximum environmental benefits of utilizing CE strategies on polyester garments, consumer actions, design solutions, and transparent data sharing are needed.

Impact of Textile Industries on Surface Water Contamination by Sb and Other Potential Toxic Elements: A Case Study in Taihu Lake Basin, China

Contamination of industry-derived antimony (Sb) is currently of great concern. This study was conducted to identify the source of Sb together with other potential toxic elements (PTEs) in a typical industrial area in China and emphasize the contribution of Sb to ecological risk in the local aquatic environment. By investigating the distribution of nine PTEs in surface water in Wujiang County in dry and wet seasons, this study revealed that textile wastewater was the main source of Sb. The distribution of Sb (0.48~21.4 μg/L) showed the least seasonal variation among the nine elements. Factor analysis revealed that the factor that controlled Sb distribution is unique. In general, Sb was more concentrated in the southeastern part of the study area where there was a large number of textile industries, and was affected by the specific conductivity and total dissolved solids in water (p < 0.01). Sb concentration in 35.71% of samples collected from the drainage outlet exceeded the standard limit of 10 μg/L. Results from three pollution assessment methods suggested that >5% of the sampling sites were slightly too heavily polluted and Sb contributed the most. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the administrative supervision of local textile enterprises and elevate the local standard of textile wastewater emission.

Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Catalytic Ozonation of Textile Wastewater: Application and Mechanism

This paper presents an overview of textile wastewater treatment by catalytic ozonation, highlighting the parameters of the process and accompanying mechanisms. Since more than 800,000 tons of dyes are produced annually and thousands of cubic meters of highly polluted textile wastewater have been emitted into the environment every day, this issue has become an environmental concern. Due to the high oxidative potential of ozone (2.08 V) and hydroxyl radical (2.80 V), the main reactive species in catalytic ozonation, the burdensome organic pollutants, including textile dyes, can be successfully decomposed. The paper shows the main groups of catalysts, emphasizing novel structural, nano-structured, and functionalized materials. The examples of catalytic ozonation in the industrial application for real textile wastewater were specially highlighted.

Effect of Chronic Exposure to Textile Wastewater Treatment Plant Effluents on Growth Performance, Oxidative Stress, and Intestinal Microbiota in Adult Zebrafish (Danio rerio)

The ever-increasing production and processing of textiles will lead to greater risks of releasing pollutants into the environment. Textile wastewater treatment plants (TWTPs) effluent are an important source of persistent toxic pollutants in receiving water bodies. The effects of specific pollutants on organisms are usually studied under laboratory conditions, and therefore, comprehensive results are not obtained regarding the chronic combined effects of pollutants under aquatic environmental conditions. Thus, this study aimed to determine the combined effects of TWTP effluents on the growth performance, oxidative stress, inflammatory response, and intestinal microbiota of adult zebrafish (Danio rerio). Exposure to TWTP effluents significantly inhibited growth, exacerbated the condition factor, and increased the mortality of adult zebrafish. Moreover, markedly decreases were observed in the activities of antioxidant enzymes, such as CAT, GSH, GSH-Px, MDA, SOD, and T-AOC, mostly in the intestine and muscle tissues of zebrafish after 1 and 4 months of exposure. In addition, the results demonstrated that TWTP effluent exposure affected the intestinal microbial community composition and decreased community diversity. Slight changes were found in the relative abundance of probiotic Lactobacillus, Akkermansia, and Lactococcus in zebrafish guts after chronic TWTP effluent exposure. The chronic toxic effects of slight increases in opportunistic pathogens, such as Mycoplasma, Stenotrophomonas, and Vibrio, deserve further attention. Our results reveal that TWTP effluent exposure poses potential health risks to aquatic organisms through growth inhibition, oxidative stress impairment of the intestine and muscles, and intestinal microbial community alterations.
