Recent progress on the frontiers of polyoxometalates structures and applications

Research on the Construction of a Series of Transition Metal-Substituted Keggin-Type TMSPOMs@PCN-224 Composites through the Encapsulation Method and Their Electron Transfer Mechanism in CO2RR

In order to take advantage of the distinct reversible multielectron transfer properties of polyoxometalates (POMs) and increase the electron density at the active sites during the electrochemical reduction of CO2 (CO2RR), a range of transition metal-doped polyoxometalates (TMSPOMs) was entrapped within the porphyrin-based framework of PCN-224 via an encapsulation method, known as TMSPOMs@PCN-224 (TMSPOMs = [XW11O39MII(H2O)]n-, [XW11O40VIV]n-, M = CoII, MnII; X = Si, n = 6; X = P, n = 5). The central elements (Si, P) and the incorporated transition metals (VIV, CoII, and MnII) both play a role in adjusting the electronic structure and electron transfer during the CO2RR process. Remarkably, the composite material with cobalt substitution displayed significantly improved performance. Through fine-tuning the POM loading, the electrocatalytic activity was optimized, leading to an impressive Faradaic efficiency for CO production (FECO) of 89.9% for SiW11Co@PCN-224, a significant improvement compared to the 12.1% FECO of PCN-224. Furthermore, the electrochemical stability of this catalyst was demonstrated over 20 h. Comparative analyses involving six composite materials indicated a relationship between the negative charge of the polyanions and their ability to facilitate effective electron transfer, ultimately enhancing the catalyst's performance. Meanwhile, these findings were supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Selective direct oxidation of 1-butanol into acetal using hydrogen peroxide and Cs5MPW11(H2O)O39 (M=Fe, Co, Cu) catalysts

Direct catalytic oxidation of alcohols to acetals in one step process is very attractive, because the two steps process leads firstly to aldehydes, which are unstable species serving as reactive intermediates to generate several by-products reducing process efficiency and selectivity. In this work, a new selective catalytic acetalization of 1-butanol into 1-1-dibutoxybutane acetal using H2O2 in one step process is investigated using Keggin-type polyoxometalates catalysts. The materials developed consisted of new lacunary phophotungstate salts Cs5MPW11(H2O)O39 (M=Fe, Co and Cu) which were prepared by inorganic solution condensation method and characterized using XRD, IR, SEM and EDX analysis to verify their structure, surface morphology and chemical composition. Cs5CuPW11(H2O)O39 catalyst allowed the highest performance for the oxidation of 1-butanol at 60 °C using H2O2 excess with a yield approaching 92 % and a turnover number of 784. Such activity is related to a bifunctional behavior of the catalyst as superacid and redox operating system and the synergistic effect created between the [PW11O39]7- Keggin framework, Cs+ and Cu2+.

Six polyoxotungstate-based transition metal compounds for electrochemical capacitor application and a comparative analysis of factors affecting capacitances

Six different polyoxotungstate-based transition metal complexes were synthesized, namely [Cu5(2,2'-bpy)5(μ2-Cl)2(PO4)2(H2O)2][HPW12O40]·2H2O (1), [Cu1.5(2,2'-bpy)1.5(inic)2(H2O)1.5]3[H1.5PW12O40]2·16.25H2O (2), [Cu(2,2'-bpy)2]2[SiW12O40]·10H2O (3), [Zn(phen)3]2[PWVWVI11O40]·5H2O (4), [Zn(phen)2(H2O)]2[SiW12O40]·2H2O (5), and [Zn(2,2'-bpy)2]2[SiW12O40] (6) (2,2'-bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, inic = isonicotinic acid, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline). Compound 1 is based on [HPW12O40]2- anions, which are accommodated within the open channels of a supramolecular network formed by novel Cu-P-Cl coordination clusters. Compound 2 is constructed from [H1.5PW12O40]1.5- and novel [Cu1.5(2,2'-bpy)1.5(inic)2(H2O)1.5]+ coordination fragments, and polyoxoanions are encapsulated within the pores created by the copper coordination fragments, resulting in a unique three-dimensional supramolecular architecture. Compound 3 is a two-dimensional structure formed through the covalent linkage between [SiW12O40]4- and [Cu(2,2'-bpy)2]2+. Compound 4 is a supramolecular architecture formed by [PWVWVI11O40]4- and [Zn(phen)3]2+ coordination fragments, while compound 5 is a supramolecular structure based on POM bi-supported Zn coordination complexes. Compound 6 is a two-dimensional framework structure constituted by [SiW12O40]4- and [Zn(2,2'-bpy)2]2+via covalent interactions. In addition, electrochemical measurement results show that the copper-based tungstate compounds 1-3 and zinc-based tungstate compounds 4-6 exhibit different performances and durabilities as electrochemical capacitors (compound 1 shows the highest specific capacitance of 94.0 F g-1 at 1.5 A g-1, whereas compound 6 maintains the best cycling stability with the capacity retention of 80.7% after 1000 cycles at 4 A g-1.). This study contributes to the development of POM-based transition metal complexes with high capacitance by providing insights into the design and synthesis process.

Recent Advances in Confining Polyoxometalates and the Applications

Polyoxometalates (POMs) are widely used in catalysis, energy storage, biomedicine, and other research fields due to their unique acidity, photothermal, and redox features. However, the leaching and agglomeration problems of POMs greatly limit their practical applications. Confining POMs in a host material is an efficient tool to address the above-mentioned issues. POM@host materials have received extensive attention in recent years. They not only inherent characteristics of POMs and host, but also play a significant synergistic effect from each component. This review focuses on the recent advances in the development and applications of POM@host materials. Different types of host materials are elaborated in detail, including tubular, layered, and porous materials. Variations in the structures and properties of POMs and hosts before and after confinement are highlighted as well. In addition, an overview of applications for the representative POM@host materials in electrochemical, catalytic, and biological fields is provided. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives of POM@host composites are discussed.

New Application of Polyoxometalate Salts as Cathode Materials in Single Chamber MFC Using Wastewater for Bioenergy Production

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are a promising technology that can be applied in a bifunctional process in which wastewater treatment is used for renewable electric power generation. In this study, novel transition metal-modified Keggin-type lacunar polyoxometalate salts (L-POMs) Cs5PMo11M(H2O)O39 (M = Fe, Co), were synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction, SEM, EDX, IR, TGA/DSC, and UV-Vis/DSR spectroscopies to be tested, for the first time, as a cathode component in wastewater-fed air chamber MFCs. Both materials were tested in the presence and absence of light to evaluate their photocatalytic behavior. The best performance in terms of electricity production was obtained for the MFC containing the Co-modified POM-based cathode, which showed a maximum power of 418.15 mW/m2 equivalent to 331 mW per cubic meter of treated wastewater, and a maximum COD removal percentage of 97% after 96 h of MFC operation. Co- and Fe-modified POMs had outstanding optical behavior with lower energy gap values, 1.71 and 2.68 eV, respectively. The newly developed materials can be considered as promising alternative cathode catalysts in a new generation of MFC devices integrating full carbon removal from wastewater and a fast reduction of oxygen.

Stepwise assembly and reversible structural transformation of ligated titanium coated bismuth-oxo cores: shell morphology engineering for enhanced chemical fixation of CO2

Herein, we report the stepwise assembly and reversible transformation of atomically precise ligated titanium coated bismuth-oxide core nanostructures. The soluble and stable Bi38O45@Ti6-oxo clusters with weakly coordinated surface salicylate ligands were first prepared as precursors. Owing to the high surface reactivity of the Bi38O45 inner core, its shell composition and morphology could be systemically modified by assembly with various Ti ions and auxiliary ligands (L), especially those with different flexibility, bridging ability and steric hindrance. As a result, a series of new core-shell Bi38O44/45@Ti x L-oxo (x = 14, 16, 18 or 20) clusters containing gradually increasing shell Ti atoms were successfully synthesized. Among them, the Bi38Ti20-oxo cluster is the largest one in the family of heterometallic Bi/Ti-oxo clusters to date. In addition, the sensitized titanium outer shell can effectively improve the photocurrent response under visible light irradiation. More remarkably, the obtained core-shell Bi38O44/45@Ti x L-oxo clusters can serve as stable and efficient catalysts for CO2 cycloaddition with epoxides under ambient conditions, whose activity was significantly influenced by the outer ligated titanium shell structure. This work provides a new insight into the construction of atomically precise heterometallic core-shell nanostructures and also an interesting shell engineering strategy for tuning their physicochemical properties.

Removal of nitrate nitrogen from water by phosphotungstate-supported TiO2 photocatalytic method

Nitrate nitrogen in water, especially in groundwater, is a major problem in the current drinking water environment. In this study, copper- and nickel-modified phosphotungstate catalysts supported on TiO₂ were prepared by the sol-gel solvothermal method, and photocatalytic reduction by phosphotungstate was used to remove nitrate nitrogen in water under ultraviolet irradiation. The maximum removal rate was 59.60% with 0.8 g/L Cu-H₃PW₁₂O₄₀/TiO₂, 90 mg/L nitrate nitrogen, and 60 min reaction time. For Ni-H₃PW₁₂O₄₀/TiO₂, the maximum removal rate of nitrate nitrogen was 54.58%, achieved with a catalyst concentration of 0.8 g/L, nitrate nitrogen concentration of 120 mg/L, and reaction time of 30 min. Both catalysts could remove nitrate nitrogen from water under the condition of photocatalysis.

Self-Assembly of Ultrathin Nanocrystals to Multidimensional Superstructures

The self-assembly of ultrathin nanocrystals (UTNCs) into well-organized multidimensional superstructures is one of the key topics in material chemistry and physics. Highly ordered nanocrystal assemblies also known as superstructures or synthetic structures have remained a focus for researchers over the past few years due to synergy in their properties as compared to their components. Here, we aim to present the recent progress being made in this field with highlights of our research group endeavors in the engineering of self-assembled complex multidimensional superstructures of various inorganic materials, including polyoxometalates. The driving forces for the assembly process and its kinetics along with the potential applications associated with these unique ordered and spatially complex superstructures are also discussed.
