Comparative assessment of leaf photosynthetic capacity datasets for estimating terrestrial gross primary productivity

The maximum Rubisco carboxylation rate normalized to 25 °C (Vcmax25) is a key parameter in terrestrial biosphere models for simulating carbon cycling. Recently, global distributions of Vcmax25 have been derived through various methods and different data, including field measurements, ecological optimality theory (EOT), leaf chlorophyll content (LCC), and solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF). However, direct validation poses challenges due to high uncertainty arising from limited ground-based observations. This study conducted an indirect evaluation of four Vcmax25 datasets by assessing the accuracy of gross primary productivity (GPP) simulated using the Biosphere-atmosphere Exchange Process Simulator (BEPS) at both site and global scales. Results indicate that, compared to utilizing Vcmax25 fixed by plant functional types (PFT) derived from field measurements, incorporating Vcmax25 derived from SIF and LCC (SIF + LCC), or solely LCC, into BEPS significantly reduces simulated errors in the annual total GPP, with a 23.2 %-25.1 % decrease in the average absolute bias across 196 FLUXNET2015 sites. Daily GPP for evergreen needleleaf forests, deciduous broadleaf forests, shrublands, grasslands, and croplands shows a 7.8 %-27.6 % decrease in absolute bias, primarily attributed to reduced simulation errors during off-peak seasons of vegetation growth. Conversely, the annual total GPP error simulated using EOT-derived Vcmax25 increases slightly (2.2 %) compared to that simulated using PFT-fixed Vcmax25. This is primarily due to a significant overestimation in evergreen broadleaf forests and underestimation in croplands, despite slight increased accuracy for other PFTs. The global annual GPP simulated using Vcmax25 with seasonal variations (i.e., LCC Vcmax25 and SIF + LCC Vcmax25) yields a 4.3 %-7.3 % decrease compared to that simulated using PFT-fixed Vcmax25. Compared to FLUXCOM and GOSIF GPP products, the GPP simulated based on SIF + LCC Vcmax25 and LCC Vcmax25 demonstrates better consistency (R2 = 0.91-0.93, RMSE = 314.2-376.6 g C m-2 yr-1). This study underscores the importance of accurately characterizing the spatiotemporal variations in Vcmax25 for the accurate simulation of global vegetation productivity.

Low-temperature behaviors of the dipolar magnet Dy3Sb3Zn2O14 with a strongly site-mixing disordered kagome lattice

Interesting behaviors may emerge in the magnetic frustrated materials with significant site-mixing disorder. We present the results of the structural, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements of Dy3Sb3Zn2O14with ~20\% Dy/Zn site-mixing disorder, which results in either a diluted 2D triangular lattice, or an immediate structure between the kagome and pyrochlore lattice. In addition to the sharp anomaly of the temperature dependence of specific heat atT~ 0.35 K, which was attributed to the emergent charge order state for the sample with less disorder, a broad peak atT~ 1.5 K, and a small hump belowT~ 0.1 K are observed. The measured temperature dependence of specific heat and the Monte Carlo simulation suggest that the magnetic frustration persists despite of a strong site-mixing disorder.

Satellite NO2 Retrieval Complicated by Aerosol Composition over Global Urban Agglomerations: Seasonal Variations and Long-Term Trends (2001-2018)

Tropospheric nitrogen dioxide (NO2) poses a serious threat to the environmental quality and public health. Satellite NO2 observations have been continuously used to monitor NO2 variations and improve model performances. However, the accuracy of satellite NO2 retrieval depends on the knowledge of aerosol optical properties, in particular for urban agglomerations accompanied by significant changes in aerosol characteristics. In this study, we investigate the impacts of aerosol composition on tropospheric NO2 retrieval for an 18 year global data set from Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME)-series satellite sensors. With a focus on cloud-free scenes dominated by the presence of aerosols, individual aerosol composition affects the uncertainties of tropospheric NO2 columns through impacts on the aerosol loading amount, relative vertical distribution of aerosol and NO2, aerosol absorption properties, and surface albedo determination. Among aerosol compositions, secondary inorganic aerosol mostly dominates the NO2 uncertainty by up to 43.5% in urban agglomerations, while organic aerosols contribute significantly to the NO2 uncertainty by -8.9 to 37.3% during biomass burning seasons. The possible contrary influences from different aerosol species highlight the importance and complexity of aerosol correction on tropospheric NO2 retrieval and indicate the need for a full picture of aerosol properties. This is of particular importance for interpreting seasonal variations or long-term trends of tropospheric NO2 columns as well as for mitigating ozone and fine particulate matter pollution.

Deep learning-assisted detection and segmentation of intracranial hemorrhage in noncontrast computed tomography scans of acute stroke patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Deep learning (DL)-assisted detection and segmentation of intracranial hemorrhage stroke in noncontrast computed tomography (NCCT) scans are well-established, but evidence on this topic is lacking.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

PubMed and Embase databases were searched from their inception to November 2023 to identify related studies. The primary outcomes included sensitivity, specificity, and the Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC); while the secondary outcomes were positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), precision, area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC), processing time, and volume of bleeding. Random-effect model and bivariate model were used to pooled independent effect size and diagnostic meta-analysis data, respectively.

RESULTS

A total of 36 original studies were included in this meta-analysis. Pooled results indicated that DL technologies have a comparable performance in intracranial hemorrhage detection and segmentation with high values of sensitivity (0.89, 95% CI: 0.88-0.90), specificity (0.91, 95% CI: 0.89-0.93), AUROC (0.94, 95% CI: 0.93-0.95), PPV (0.92, 95% CI: 0.91-0.93), NPV (0.94, 95% CI: 0.91-0.96), precision (0.83, 95% CI: 0.77-0.90), DSC (0.84, 95% CI: 0.82-0.87). There is no significant difference between manual labeling and DL technologies in hemorrhage quantification (MD 0.08, 95% CI: -5.45-5.60, P=0.98), but the latter takes less process time than manual labeling (WMD 2.26, 95% CI: 1.96-2.56, P=0.001).

CONCLUSION

This systematic review has identified a range of DL algorithms that the performance was comparable to experienced clinicians in hemorrhage lesions identification, segmentation, and quantification but with greater efficiency and reduced cost. It is highly emphasized that multicenter randomized controlled clinical trials will be needed to validate the performance of these tools in the future, paving the way for fast and efficient decision-making during clinical procedure in patients with acute hemorrhagic stroke.

Explainable machine learning in outcome prediction of high-grade aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage

OBJECTIVE

Accurate prognostic prediction in patients with high-grade aneruysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) is essential for personalized treatment. In this study, we developed an interpretable prognostic machine learning model for high-grade aSAH patients using SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP).

METHODS

A prospective registry cohort of high-grade aSAH patients was collected in one single-center hospital. The endpoint in our study is a 12-month follow-up outcome. The dataset was divided into training and validation sets in a 7:3 ratio. Machine learning algorithms, including Logistic regression model (LR), support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), were employed to develop a prognostic prediction model for high-grade aSAH. The optimal model was selected for SHAP analysis.

RESULTS

Among the 421 patients, 204 (48.5%) exhibited poor prognosis. The RF model demonstrated superior performance compared to LR (AUC = 0.850, 95% CI: 0.783-0.918), SVM (AUC = 0.862, 95% CI: 0.799-0.926), and XGBoost (AUC = 0.850, 95% CI: 0.783-0.917) with an AUC of 0.867 (95% CI: 0.806-0 .929). Primary prognostic features identified through SHAP analysis included higher World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS) grade, higher modified Fisher score (mFS) and advanced age, were found to be associated with 12-month unfavorable outcome, while the treatment of coiling embolization for aSAH drove the prediction towards favorable prognosis. Additionally, the SHAP force plot visualized individual prognosis predictions.

CONCLUSIONS

This study demonstrated the potential of machine learning techniques in prognostic prediction for high-grade aSAH patients. The features identified through SHAP analysis enhance model interpretability and provide guidance for clinical decision-making.

Ultra-Sensitive and Stable Multiplexed Biosensors Array in Fully Printed and Integrated Platforms for Reliable Perspiration Analysis

Electrochemical biosensors have emerged as one of the promising tools for tracking human body physiological dynamics via non-invasive perspiration analysis. However, it remains a key challenge to integrate multiplexed sensors in a highly controllable and reproducible manner to achieve long-term reliable biosensing, especially on flexible platforms. Herein, a fully inkjet printed and integrated multiplexed biosensing patch with remarkably high stability and sensitivity is reported for the first time. These desirable characteristics are enabled by the unique interpenetrating interface design and precise control over active materials mass loading, owing to the optimized ink formulations and droplet-assisted printing processes. The sensors deliver sensitivities of 313.28 µA mm-1 cm-2 for glucose and 0.87 µA mm-1 cm-2 for alcohol sensing with minimal drift over 30 h, which are among the best in the literature. The integrated patch can be used for reliable and wireless diet monitoring or medical intervention via epidermal analysis and would inspire the advances of wearable devices for intelligent healthcare applications.

Elucidating drivers of severe wintertime fine particulate matter pollution episodes in the Yangtze River Delta region of eastern China

Understanding the causes and sources responsible for severe fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution episodes that occur under conducive synoptic weather patterns (SWPs) is essential for regional air quality management. The Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region in eastern China has experienced recurrent severe PM2.5 episodes during the winters from 2013 to 2017. In this study, we employed an objective classification approach, the self-organizing map, to investigate the underlying impact of predominant SWPs on PM2.5 pollution in the YRD. We further conducted a series of source apportionment simulations using the Particulate Source Apportionment Technology (PSAT) tool integrated within the Comprehensive Air Quality Model with Extensions (CAMx) to quantify the source contributions to PM2.5 pollution under different SWPs. Here we identified six predominant SWPs over the YRD that are robustly connected to the evolution of the Siberian High. Considering the regional average PM2.5 anomalies, our results show that polluted SWPs favourable for the occurrence of regional PM2.5 pollution account for 61-78 %. The most conducive SWP, associated with the highest regional exceedance (46 %) of PM2.5 levels, is characterized by noticeable cyclonic anomalies at 850 hPa and stagnant surface weather conditions. Our source apportionment analysis emphasizes the pivotal role of local emissions and intra-regional transport within the YRD in shaping PM2.5 pollution in representative cities. Local emissions have the most significant impact on PM2.5 levels in Shanghai (32-48 %), while PM2.5 pollution in Nanjing, Hangzhou, and Hefei is more influenced by intra-regional transport (33-61 %). Industrial and residential emissions are the dominant sources, contributing 32-41 % and 24-38 % to PM2.5, respectively. Under specific SWPs associated with a stronger influence of inter-regional transport from northern China, there is a synchronously remarkable enhancement in the contribution of residential emissions. Our study pinpoints the opportunities for future air quality planning that would benefit from quantitative source attribution linked to prevailing SWPs.

Effectiveness of the Sellick maneuver for painless gastroscopy in patients with esophageal hiatal hernia: A randomized, self‑control trial

The Sellick maneuver is used for endotracheal intubation to prevent the occurrence of gastroesophageal reflux. The aim of the present study was to observe the effect of the Sellick maneuver on safety, esophageal closure status, gastric mucosal fold extension status, and positive detection rate of lesions in patients with esophageal hiatal hernia under painless gastroscopy. A total of 40 patients with esophageal hiatal hernia who underwent painless gastroscopy were screened for the use of the Sellick maneuver, in which the operator applied pressure to the cervical cricoid cartilage during the examination. The status of esophageal closure at the are pressed, examination time, gastric mucosal fold extension score, positive rate of lesion detection, and reflux of gastric juice or gastric contents, amongst other parameters were assessed. After using the Sellick maneuver, the state of esophageal closure during gastroscopy was significantly better than the no-Sellick maneuver group (P<0.05), and the extension scores of the greater curvature folds of the gastric body, the lateral folds of the lesser curvature of the gastric body, and the mucosal folds of the fundus were significantly higher than that of the no-Sellick maneuver (all P<0.05). The number of gastric polyps and gastric lesions (gastric ulcers and mucosal hyperplasia, amongst others) examined with the Sellick maneuver was significantly higher than the no-Sellick maneuver group (P<0.01). The Sellick maneuver effectively improved the extension of gastric mucosal folds during gastroscopy in patients with esophageal hiatal hernia, increased the positive detection rate of gastric lesions, and shortened the endoscopy time.

Observing network effect of shipping emissions from space: A natural experiment in the world's busiest port

Maritime trade and associated emissions are dynamic in nature. Although shipping emissions contribute significantly to air quality and climate change, their trade-governed dynamics remain less explored due to the lack of observational evidence. Here, we use satellite measurements to capture the redistribution of shipping nitrogen oxides (NOx ) emissions from Shanghai port, the world's busiest port, during a natural experiment posted by the localized COVID-19 lockdown in 2022. Viewing the ports as nodes in a network linked by ship journeys, we quantify a lockdown-induced - 42% reduction in shipping NOx emissions for Shanghai port. We further identify an emission transfer to its neighboring connected ports, confirmed by comprehensive vessel activity observations. Our study highlights the socioeconomic drivers of shipping emissions, which may add additional layers of complexity to air quality management.

Deep learning-assisted identification and quantification of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage in non-contrast CT scans: Development and external validation of Hybrid 2D/3D UNet

Accurate stroke assessment and consequent favorable clinical outcomes rely on the early identification and quantification of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) in non-contrast computed tomography (NCCT) images. However, hemorrhagic lesions can be complex and difficult to distinguish manually. To solve these problems, here we propose a novel Hybrid 2D/3D UNet deep-learning framework for automatic aSAH identification and quantification in NCCT images. We evaluated 1824 consecutive patients admitted with aSAH to four hospitals in China between June 2018 and May 2022. Accuracy and precision, Dice scores and intersection over union (IoU), and interclass correlation coefficients (ICC) were calculated to assess model performance, segmentation performance, and correlations between automatic and manual segmentation, respectively. A total of 1355 patients with aSAH were enrolled: 931, 101, 179, and 144 in four datasets, of whom 326 were scanned with Siemens, 640 with Philips, and 389 with GE Medical Systems scanners. Our proposed deep-learning method accurately identified (accuracies 0.993-0.999) and segmented (Dice scores 0.550-0.897) hemorrhage in both the internal and external datasets, even combinations of hemorrhage subtypes. We further developed a convenient AI-assisted platform based on our algorithm to assist clinical workflows, whose performance was comparable to manual measurements by experienced neurosurgeons (ICCs 0.815-0.957) but with greater efficiency and reduced cost. While this tool has not yet been prospectively tested in clinical practice, our innovative hybrid network algorithm and platform can accurately identify and quantify aSAH, paving the way for fast and cheap NCCT interpretation and a reliable AI-based approach to expedite clinical decision-making for aSAH patients.

Comparing endoscopic mucosal resection with endoscopic submucosal dissection in colorectal adenoma and tumors: Meta-analysis and system review

AIMS

This study aimed to evaluate the safety, efficacy, and long-term outcomes of endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for treating colorectal adenomas and tumors.

METHODS

A systematic literature review was conducted using databases including PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase. Parameters such as number of patients or lesions, histological diagnosis, lesion size, surgery time, en-bloc resection, R0 resection, severe postoperative complications, and local recurrence were extracted and pooled for analysis.

RESULTS

A total of 12 retrospective studies involving 1289 patients and 1850 lesions were included in the analysis. EMR was found to have a shorter operation time by 53.6 minutes (95% CI: 51.3, 55.9, P<0.001) and fewer incidences of severe postoperative complications such as perforation and delayed bleeding (OR = 0.40, 95%CI: 0.23, 0.71, P<0.001). On the other hand, ESD had higher rates of en-bloc resection (OR = 0.15, 95%CI: 0.07, 0.30, P<0.001) and R0 resection (OR = 0.32, 95%CI: 0.16, 0.65, P<0.001). Recurrence after EMR was found to be significantly higher than that after ESD surgery (OR = 5.88, 95%CI: 2.15, 16.07, P = 0.037).

CONCLUSIONS

The study suggests that the choice of surgical method may have a greater impact on recurrence compared to the pathological type, and that ESD may be more suitable for the treatment of malignant lesions despite its higher rates of severe postoperative complications and longer operation time.

How to Choose the Appropriate Posterior Slope Angle Can Lead to Good Knee Joint Function Recovery in Total Knee Arthroplasty?

Objective

In this study, we aim to examine the effects of osteotomy under varying posterior slope angles on knee joint function recovery following knee arthroplasty.

Methods

We conducted a retrospective analysis from September 2015 to September 2018 on 240 patients who underwent knee arthroplasty three years previously. The study participants were categorized based on changes in the angle of the posterior slope before and after surgery: Group 1, > 5°; Group 2, 3°-5°; Group 3, 0°-3°; Group 4, -3°-0°; Group 5, < -3°. All participants were affected with knee osteoarthritis. The Knee Society Clinical Rating System (KSS) knee function score, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC) knee function score, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) pain score, and postoperative complications were measured 3 years after surgery.

Results

The level of pain experienced by the patients decreased significantly than before, with pain scores ranging from 1.0-3.0, and there was a statistical difference between groups (H = 93.400, P < 0.001). The KSS score increased, with group 5 having the lowest median score of 78.0 and group 2 having the highest median score of 97.0, and there was a statistical difference between groups (H = 164.460, P < 0.001). The WOMAC score was reduced, with the median score being 24.0, 11.0, 14.0, 20.0, and 26.0, in the five groups, respectively. Group 5 had the highest score, while Group 2 had the lowest score, and there was a statistically significant difference between groups (H = 164.223, P < 0.001). No symptoms such as periprosthetic femoral fracture, prosthetic loosening, or pad wear were detected in patients postoperatively.

Conclusion

Osteotomy at various posterior slope angles in total knee arthroplasty impacts postoperative knee function rehabilitation. An excessive increase or decrease in angle can have an impact on the postoperative recovery of knee function.

Utilization of Lyotropic Liquid Crystalline Gels for Chronic Wound Management

Management of chronic wounds is becoming a serious health problem worldwide. To treat chronic wounds, a suitable healing environment and sustained delivery of growth factors must be guaranteed. Different therapies have been applied for the treatment of chronic wounds such as debridement and photodynamic therapy. Among them, growth factors are widely used therapeutic drugs. However, at present, growth factor delivery systems cannot meet the demand of clinical practice; therefore new methods should be developed to meet the emerging need. For this reason, researchers have tried to modify hydrogels through some methods such as chemical synthesis and molecule modifications to enhance their properties. However, there are still a large number of limitations in practical use like byproduct problems, difficulty to industrialize, and instability of growth factor. Moreover, applications of new materials like lyotropic liquid crystalline (LLC) on chronic wounds have emerged as a new trend. The structure of LLC is endowed with many excellent properties including low cost, ordered structure, and excellent loading efficiency. LLC can provide a moist local environment for the wound, and its lattice structure can embed the growth factors in the water channel. Growth factor is released from the high-concentration carrier to the low-concentration release medium, which can be precisely regulated. Therefore, it can provide sustained and stable delivery of growth factors as well as a suitable healing environment for wounds, which is a promising candidate for chronic wound healing and has a broad prospective application. In conclusion, more reliable and applicable drug delivery systems should be designed and tested to improve the therapy and management of chronic wounds.

Fluctuating magnetic droplets immersed in a sea of quantum spin liquid

The search of quantum spin liquid (QSL), an exotic magnetic state with strongly fluctuating and highly entangled spins down to zero temperature, is a main theme in current condensed matter physics. However, there is no smoking gun evidence for deconfined spinons in any QSL candidate so far. The disorders and competing exchange interactions may prevent the formation of an ideal QSL state on frustrated spin lattices. Here we report comprehensive and systematic measurements of the magnetic susceptibility, ultralow-temperature specific heat, muon spin relaxation (μSR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and thermal conductivity for NaYbSe2 single crystals, in which Yb3+ ions with effective spin-1/2 form a perfect triangular lattice. All these complementary techniques find no evidence of long-range magnetic order down to their respective base temperatures. Instead, specific heat, μSR, and NMR measurements suggest the coexistence of quasi-static and dynamic spins in NaYbSe2. The scattering from these quasi-static spins may cause the absence of magnetic thermal conductivity. Thus, we propose a scenario of fluctuating ferrimagnetic droplets immersed in a sea of QSL. This may be quite common on the way pursuing an ideal QSL, and provides a brand new platform to study how a QSL state survives impurities and coexists with other magnetically ordered states.

Novel practical stereoselective synthesis of a bicyclic hydantoino-thiolactone as the key intermediate for production of (+)-biotin

Bicyclic hydantoinothiolactone (1), as the key intermediate for production of (+)-biotin, has been efficiently and high-stereoselectively synthesized from the cheap starting material l-cystine via nine steps in 44% overall yield. In this new practical synthesis, there are two characteristic steps worthy of note. One step is TMSOTf-catalyzed efficient cyanation of (3S,7aR)-6-benzyl-5-oxo-3-phenyltetrahydro-1H,3H-imidazo[1,5-c]thiazol-7-yl acetate, the other step is DBU-catalyzed rapid isomerization of trans-isomer to cis-isomer of the bicyclic hydantoinothiolactone.

High-efficiency, flexible and large-area red/green/blue all-inorganic metal halide perovskite quantum wires-based light-emitting diodes

Metal halide perovskites have shown great promise as a potential candidate for next-generation solid state lighting and display technologies. However, a generic organic ligand-free and antisolvent-free solution method to fabricate highly efficient full-color perovskite light-emitting diodes has not been realized. Herein, by utilizing porous alumina membranes with ultra-small pore size as templates, we have successfully fabricated crystalline all-inorganic perovskite quantum wire arrays with ultrahigh density and excellent uniformity, using a generic organic ligand-free and anti-solvent-free solution method. The quantum confinement effect, in conjunction with the high light out-coupling efficiency, results in high photoluminescence quantum yield for blue, sky-blue, green and pure-red perovskite quantum wires arrays. Consequently, blue, sky-blue, green and pure-red LED devices with spectrally stable electroluminescence have been successfully fabricated, demonstrating external quantum efficiencies of 12.41%, 16.49%, 26.09% and 9.97%, respectively, after introducing a dual-functional small molecule, which serves as surface passivation and hole transporting layer, and a halide vacancy healing agent.

Hybrid Threshold Denoising Framework Using Singular Value Decomposition for Side-Channel Analysis Preprocessing

The traces used in side-channel analysis are essential to breaking the key of encryption and the signal quality greatly affects the correct rate of key guessing. Therefore, the preprocessing of side-channel traces plays an important role in side-channel analysis. The process of side-channel leakage signal acquisition is usually affected by internal circuit noise, external environmental noise, and other factors, so the collected signal is often mixed with strong noise. In order to extract the feature information of side-channel signals from very low signal-to-noise ratio traces, a hybrid threshold denoising framework using singular value decomposition is proposed for side-channel analysis preprocessing. This framework is based on singular value decomposition and introduces low-rank matrix approximation theory to improve the rank selection methods of singular value decomposition. This paper combines the hard threshold method of truncated singular value decomposition with the soft threshold method of singular value shrinkage damping and proposes a hybrid threshold denoising framework using singular value decomposition for the data preprocessing step of side-channel analysis as a general preprocessing method for non-profiled side-channel analysis. The data used in the experimental evaluation are from the raw traces of the public database of DPA contest V2 and AES_HD. The success rate curve of non-profiled side-channel analysis further confirms the effectiveness of the proposed framework. Moreover, the signal-to-noise ratio of traces is significantly improved after preprocessing, and the correlation with the correct key is also significantly enhanced. Experimental results on DPA v2 and AES_HD show that the proposed noise reduction framework can be effectively applied to the side-channel analysis preprocessing step, and can successfully improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the traces and the attack efficiency.

A Lightweight Fault-Detection Scheme for Resource-Constrained Solar Insecticidal Lamp IoTs

The Solar Insecticidal Lamp Internet of Things (SIL-IoTs) is an emerging paradigm that extends Internet of Things (IoT) technology to agricultural-enabled electronic devices. Ensuring the dependability and safety of SIL-IoTs is crucial for pest monitoring, prediction, and prevention. However, SIL-IoTs can experience system performance degradation due to failures, which can be attributed to complex environmental changes and device deterioration in agricultural settings. This study proposes a sensor-level lightweight fault-detection scheme that takes into account realistic constraints such as computational resources and energy. By analyzing fault characteristics, we designed a distributed fault-detection method based on operation condition differences, interval number residuals, and feature residuals. Several experiments were conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results demonstrated that our method achieves an average F1-score of 95.59%. Furthermore, the proposed method only consumes an additional 0.27% of the total power, and utilizes 0.9% RAM and 3.1% Flash on the Arduino of the SIL-IoTs node. These findings indicated that the proposed method is lightweight and energy-efficient.

miR-21-5p Inhibits the Proliferation, Migration, and Invasion of Glioma by Targeting S100A10

S100A10, a member of the S100 protein family, is upregulated in multiple human malignancies and plays a key role in regulating tumor progression. This study aimed to reveal the underlying mechanism by which S100A10 in regulates the proliferation, migration, and invasion of glioma. The expression and clinical information data of S100A10 were downloaded from public databases (TCGA, CGGA, and GEPIA2). S100A10 expression levels in glioma tumor tissues and adjacent nontumor tissues were compared by immunohistochemistry (IHC). The functional roles of S100A10 in glioma were assessed by cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) cell proliferation assay, wound healing assay, transwell assay, and flow cytometry. miRDB and double luciferase assay were used to predict and identify potential S100A10 mRNA-complementary miRNAs, and the roles of miR-21-5p in glioma cell were examined by targeted knockdown or overexpression miR-21-5p in glioma cell lines. We found that S100A10 was overexpressed in glioma tissues and predicted a worse prognosis. S100A10 knockdown significantly inhibited glioma cell proliferation, invasion, and migration. Furthermore, we demonstrated that miR-21-5p inhibits glioma proliferation, migration, and invasion by targeting S100A10. This study showed S100A10 was a new prognostic predictor among glioma patients and provided new insights into the pathogenesis of gliomas, suggesting that miR-21-5p /S100A10 axis may serve as a valuable therapeutic target for glioma.

[Synchronization isolation method for multiple types of cells from mouse liver]

Objective: To explore a simple and feasible method for the isolation and purification of hepatocytes, hepatic stellate cells (HSC), and lymphocytes from mice. Methods: The cell suspension was obtained from male C57bl/6 mice by hepatic perfusion through the portal vein digestion method and then isolated and purified by discontinuous Percoll gradient centrifugation. Trypan blue exclusion was used to determine cell viability. Glycogen staining, cytokeratin 18, and transmission electron microscopy were used to identify hepatic cells. Immunofluorescence was used to detect α-smooth muscle actin combined with desmin in HSCs. Flow cytometry was used to analyze lymphocyte subsets in the liver. Results: After isolation and purification, about 2.7×10(7) hepatocytes, 5.7×10(5) HSCS, and 4.6×106 hepatic mononuclear cells were obtained from the liver of mice with a body weight of about 22g. The cell survival rate in each group was > 95%. Hepatocytes were apparent in glycogen deposited purple-red granules and cytokeratin 18. Electron microscopy showed that there were abundant organelles in hepatocytes and tight junctions between cells. HSC had expressed α-smooth muscle actin and desmin. Flow cytometry showed hepatic mononuclear cells, including lymphocyte subsets such as CD4, CD8, NKs, and NKTs. Conclusion: The hepatic perfusion through the portal vein digestion method can isolate multiple primary cells from the liver of mice at once and has the features of simplicity and efficiency.

An investigation into whether changes in the posterior tibial slope affect the outcome of cruciate-retaining total knee arthroplasty by affecting tibiofemoral articular contact kinematics

Aims

The outcomes of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are affected by many factors. This study aims to evaluate whether changes in the posterior tibial slope (PTS) affect patients' outcomes after cruciate-retaining TKA by affecting tibiofemoral articular contact kinematics. It was hypothesized that changes in PTS affect the outcomes of PCR TKA by affecting tibiofemoral articular contact kinematics.

Methods

A total of 60 knees (30 patients) that underwent posterior cruciate-retaining TKA (with the same size prosthesis) for medial osteoarthritis were assessed preoperatively and one year postoperatively. Before and after TKA, changes in the PTS, as seen on lateral radiographs, were noted. The knees were placed in groups according to these PTS changes (preoperative value - postoperative value): group 1 >3° change and group 2 ≤3° change. Knee kinematics were observed under mid-flexion weight-bearing conditions and were compared between the two groups using the two-dimensional/three-dimensional registration technique. Pain was measured using the visual analog scale, and knee function was assessed using the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) and the Knee Society Score (KSS).

Results

Group 2 experienced paradoxical anterior motion of the medial femoral condyle postoperatively, but group 1 did not. A comparison of the results of the TKA between the two groups showed a significant difference in pain using the visual analog scale, and knee function of the KSS and the WOMAC (P < 0.05). The postoperative results were better in group 1 than in group 2.

Conclusions

These results suggest that achieving a greater change in the PTS improves outcomes in patients undergoing posterior cruciate-retaining TKA because it reduces the paradoxical motion of the medial femoral condyle.

KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDES, AND PRACTICES TOWARD MALARIA AND ANTIMALARIAL MASS DRUG ADMINISTRATION AMONG HEADS OF HOUSEHOLDS IN VILLAGES ON GRANDE COMORE ISLAND, THE COMOROS

Knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) surveys on malaria and antimalarial mass drug administration (MDA) have not received much attention in the Union of the Comoros. This study is a household-based cross-sectional survey using a multi-stage sampling technique aiming at investigating KAP toward malaria and antimalarial MDA with artemisinin-piperaquine among heads of households on Grande Comore Island, the largest island of the Comoros. A predefined structured questionnaire containing socio-demographic characteristics and questions about malaria and antimalarial MDA was administered to 1,368 randomly selected heads of households from 10 malaria-endemic villages on Grande Comore Island. The results showed that 81.4% of the heads of households knew that malaria is a transmissible disease, 77.6% recognized mosquitoes as the vectors of malaria, and 70.8% recognized fever as one of the frequent symptoms of malaria; 40.8% of respondents remembered the name of the antimalarial drug used for MDA, and 62.1% remembered the color of the antimalarial tablets; and 65.1% chose to go to a public health center to seek treatment as their first option within 24 hr of the onset of initial malaria symptoms. This study found that most heads of households had a reasonable level of knowledge about malaria and antimalarial MDA. However, only 7.3% obtained full points on all knowledge-related questions. Misconceptions about malaria cause, transmission, diagnostic method, and antimalarial MDA exist in the community of Grande Comore Island. As the Comoros continues to put great efforts to go toward malaria elimination, the community's KAP on malaria and antimalarial MDA is crucial to guarantee the community's long-term adherence to malaria elimination interventions and could become key to guaranteeing malarial elimination in the Comoros. Therefore, there is a great need to improve malaria prevention awareness through strengthening malaria education and promoting behavioral change. Heads of households should be the core target of malaria education and behavioral change for malaria elimination.

Analysis of the correlation between BMI and respiratory tract microbiota in acute exacerbation of COPD

Objective

To investigate the distribution differences in the respiratory tract microbiota of AECOPD patients in different BMI groups and explore its guiding value for treatment.

Methods

Sputum samples of thirty-eight AECOPD patients were collected. The patients were divided into low, normal and high BMI group. The sputum microbiota was sequenced by 16S rRNA detection technology, and the distribution of sputum microbiota was compared. Rarefaction curve, α-diversity, principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) and measurement of sputum microbiota abundance in each group were performed and analyzed by bioinformatics methods.

Results

1. The rarefaction curve in each BMI group reached a plateau. No significant differences were observed in the OTU total number or α-diversity index of microbiota in each group. PCoA showed significant differences in the distance matrix of sputum microbiota between the three groups, which was calculated by the Binary Jaccard and the Bray Curtis algorithm. 2. At the phylum level, most of the microbiota were Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, and Fusobacteria. At the genus level, most were Streptococcus, Prevotella, Haemophilus, Neisseria and Bacteroides. 3. At the phylum level, the abundance of Proteobacteria in the low group was significantly higher than that in normal and high BMI groups, the abundances of Firmicutes in the low and normal groups were significantly lower than that in high BMI groups. At the genus level, the abundance of Haemophilus in the low group was significantly higher than that in high BMI group, and the abundances of Streptococcus in the low and normal BMI groups were significantly lower than that in the high BMI group.

Conclusions

1. The sputum microbiota of AECOPD patients in different BMI groups covered almost all microbiota, and BMI had no significant association with total number of respiratory tract microbiota or α-diversity in AECOPD patients. However, there was a significant difference in the PCoA between different BMI groups. 2. The microbiota structure of AECOPD patients differed in different BMI groups. Gram-negative bacteria (G-) in the respiratory tract of patients predominated in the low BMI group, while gram-positive bacteria (G+) predominated in the high BMI group.

A Pilot Study Exploiting the Industrialization Potential of Solid Lipid Nanoparticle-Based Metered-Dose Inhalers

BACKGROUND

Delivery of inhalable nanoparticles through metered-dose inhalers (MDI) is a promising approach to treat lung disease such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Nanocoating of the inhalable nanoparticles helps in stability and cellular uptake enhancement but complicates the production process. Thus, it is meaningful to accelerate the translation process of MDI encapsulating inhalable nanoparticles with nanocoating structure.

METHODS

In this study, solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) are selected as a model inhalable nanoparticle system. An established reverse microemulsion strategy was utilized to explore the industrialization potential of SLN-based MDI. Three categories of nanocoating with the functions of stabilization (by Poloxamer 188, encoded as SLN(0)), cellular uptake enhancement (by cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, encoded as SLN(+)), and targetability (by hyaluronic acid, encoded as SLN(-)) were constructed upon SLN, whose particle size distribution and zeta-potential were characterized. Subsequently, SLN were loaded into MDI, and evaluated for the processing reliability, physicochemical nature, formulation stability, and biocompatibility.

RESULTS

The results elucidated that three types of SLN-based MDI were successfully fabricated with good reproducibility and stability. Regarding safety, SLN(0) and SLN(-) showed negligible cytotoxicity on cellular level.

CONCLUSIONS

This work serves as a pilot study for the scale-up of SLN-based MDI, and could be useful for the future development of inhalable nanoparticles.

Current Status and Prospects of Research on Sensor Fault Diagnosis of Agricultural Internet of Things

Sensors have been used in various agricultural production scenarios due to significant advances in the Agricultural Internet of Things (Ag-IoT), leading to smart agriculture. Intelligent control or monitoring systems rely heavily on trustworthy sensor systems. Nonetheless, sensor failures are likely due to various factors, including key equipment malfunction or human error. A faulty sensor can produce corrupted measurements, resulting in incorrect decisions. Early detection of potential faults is crucial, and fault diagnosis techniques have been proposed. The purpose of sensor fault diagnosis is to detect faulty data in the sensor and recover or isolate the faulty sensors so that the sensor can finally provide correct data to the user. Current fault diagnosis technologies are based mainly on statistical models, artificial intelligence, deep learning, etc. The further development of fault diagnosis technology is also conducive to reducing the loss caused by sensor failures.

Probing FeSi, a d-electron topological Kondo insulator candidate, with magnetic field, pressure, and microwaves

Recently, evidence for a conducting surface state (CSS) below 19 K was reported for the correlated d-electron small gap semiconductor FeSi. In the work reported herein, the CSS and the bulk phase of FeSi were probed via electrical resistivity ρ measurements as a function of temperature T, magnetic field B to 60 T, and pressure P to 7.6 GPa, and by means of a magnetic field-modulated microwave spectroscopy (MFMMS) technique. The properties of FeSi were also compared with those of the Kondo insulator SmB6 to address the question of whether FeSi is a d-electron analogue of an f-electron Kondo insulator and, in addition, a "topological Kondo insulator" (TKI). The overall behavior of the magnetoresistance of FeSi at temperatures above and below the onset temperature TS = 19 K of the CSS is similar to that of SmB6. The two energy gaps, inferred from the ρ(T) data in the semiconducting regime, increase with pressure up to about 7 GPa, followed by a drop which coincides with a sharp suppression of TS. Several studies of ρ(T) under pressure on SmB6 reveal behavior similar to that of FeSi in which the two energy gaps vanish at a critical pressure near the pressure at which TS vanishes, although the energy gaps in SmB6 initially decrease with pressure, whereas in FeSi they increase with pressure. The MFMMS measurements showed a sharp feature at TS ≈ 19 K for FeSi, which could be due to ferromagnetic ordering of the CSS. However, no such feature was observed at TS ≈ 4.5 K for SmB6.

A campaign of mass drug administration with artemisinin-piperaquine to antimalaria in Trobriand Islands

We conducted a study on the Trobriand Islands of Papua New Guinea (PNG) in 2018 to verify the safety and efficacy of the artemisinin-piperaquine (AP) mass drug administration (MDA) campaign in regions with moderate to high mixed malaria transmission. Based on the natural topography of the Trobriand Islands, 44,855 residents from 92 villages on the islands were enrolled and divided into the main and outer islands. Three rounds of MDA were conducted using grid-based management. The primary endpoint was the coverage rate. Adverse reactions, parasitemia, and malaria morbidity were the secondary endpoints. There were 36,716 people living in 75 villages on the main island, and the MDA coverage rate was 92.58-95.68%. Furthermore, 8,139 people living in 17 villages on the outer islands had a coverage rate of 94.93-96.11%. The adverse reactions were mild in both groups, and parasitemia decreased by 87.2% after one year of surveillance. The average annual malaria morbidity has decreased by 89.3% after the program for four years. High compliance and mild adverse reactions indicated that the MDA campaign with AP was safe. The short-term effect is relatively ideal, but the evidence for long-term effect evaluation is insufficient.

Rhein Exhibits Anti-Inflammatory Effects in Chronic Atrophic Gastritis via Nrf2 and MAPK Signaling

BACKGROUND

Chronic atrophic gastritis is a premalignant lesion with a high risk of developing into gastric cancer. Rhein is a key active ingredient of several traditional Chinese medicines with multiple pharmacological effects. Nevertheless, the role of rhein in chronic atrophic gastritis is unclear.

METHODS

Helicobacter pylori infection was used to establish chronic atrophic gastritis in a mouse model. Murine gastric mucosa treated with saline or rhein was used in experiments. Hematoxylin and eosin staining and Alcian blue-periodic acid-Schiff staining were utilized for histopathological observation of murine gastric mucosa. The levels of proinflammatory factors were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and oxidative stress-associated markers were detected by commercially available assay kits. Western blotting was used for measuring the levels of nuclear factor, erythroid 2-like bZIP transcription factor 2, and mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling-related proteins.

RESULTS

Rhein mitigated the gastric mucosal injury and suppressed inflammation and oxidative stress in H. pylori-infected chronic atrophic gastritis mouse models. Rhein inactivated mitogen-activated protein kinase and activated erythroid 2-like bZIP transcription factor 2 signaling in gastric mucosa of mice with chronic atrophic gastritis.

CONCLUSION

Rhein exhibits anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects in chronic atrophic gastritis via erythroid 2-like bZIP transcription factor 2 and mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling.

The phototactic rhythm of pests for the Solar Insecticidal Lamp: A review

Pest management has been a great challenge since the beginning of human agricultural activities. Since the 1930s, chemical pesticide control has been a major control technology that can solve some of the pest problems in agricultural production. Still, it is harmful to food safety and the ecological environment. Meanwhile, the extensive use of chemical pesticides may lead to the rapid development of pest resistance. Because of the advantages of low cost, eco-friendly advantage, and low side effects, Solar Insecticidal Lamp (SIL) as the main physical control technology has been widely used for pest management in agricultural production in China. Owing to the phototaxis of pests, they have a phototropic rhythm during the nighttime. We can adjust the SIL insecticidal time according to the phototropic rhythm of pests. The purpose of this paper is to provide a comprehensive review of the pest phototactic rhythm in a selection of 24 pest species. It is the first comprehensive survey on the phototactic rhythm of pests and the time segments of this survey are accurate to the hour. The phototactic rhythm of pests are investigated in two different varieties of crops: 1) food crops and 2) economic crops. We also discuss and analyze the various factors (e.g., meteorological conditions, insecticidal devices, physiological states and others) that affect the changing phototactic rhythm of pests. Finally, we highlight some open research challenge issues and future directions.

Three-Dimensional Nanopillar Arrays-Based Efficient and Flexible Perovskite Solar Cells with Enhanced Stability

Perovskite nanopillars (PNPs) are propitious candidates for solar irradiation harvesting and are potential alternatives to thin films in flexible photovoltaics. To realize efficient daily energy output, photovoltaics must absorb sunlight over a broad range of incident angles and wavelengths congruent with the solar spectrum. Herein, we report highly periodic three-dimensional (3D) PNP-based flexible photovoltaics possessing a core-shell structure. The vertically aligned PNP arrays demonstrate up to 95.70% and 75.10% absorption at peak and under an incident angle of 60°. The efficient absorption and the orthogonal carrier collection facilitate an external quantum efficiency of 84.0%-89.18% for broadband wavelength. PNPs have been successfully implemented in flexible solar cells. The porous alumina membrane protects PNPs against water and oxygen intrusion and thereby imparts robustness to photovoltaic devices. Meanwhile, the excellent tolerance to mechanical stress/strain enables our unique PNP-based device to provide efficient solar-to-electricity conversion while undergoing mechanical bending.

Automatic captioning of early gastric cancer using magnification endoscopy with narrow-band imaging

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

The detection rate for early gastric cancer (EGC) is unsatisfactory, and mastering the diagnostic skills of magnifying endoscopy with narrow-band imaging (ME-NBI) requires rich expertise and experience. We aimed to develop an EGC captioning model (EGCCap) to automatically describe the visual characteristics of ME-NBI images for endoscopists.

METHODS

ME-NBI images (n = 1886) from 294 cases were enrolled from multiple centers, and corresponding 5658 text data were designed following the simple EGC diagnostic algorithm. An EGCCap was developed using the multiscale meshed-memory transformer. We conducted comprehensive evaluations for EGCCap including the quantitative and quality of performance, generalization, robustness, interpretability, and assistant value analyses. The commonly used metrics were BLEUs, CIDEr, METEOR, ROUGE, SPICE, accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity. Two-sided statistical tests were conducted, and statistical significance was determined when P < .05.

RESULTS

EGCCap acquired satisfying captioning performance by outputting correctly and coherently clinically meaningful sentences in the internal test cohort (BLEU1 = 52.434, CIDEr = 36.734, METEOR = 27.823, ROUGE = 49.949, SPICE = 35.548) and maintained over 80% performance when applied to other centers or corrupted data. The diagnostic ability of endoscopists improved with the assistance of EGCCap, which was especially significant (P < .05) for junior endoscopists. Endoscopists gave EGCCap an average remarkable score of 7.182, showing acceptance of EGCCap.

CONCLUSIONS

EGCCap exhibited promising captioning performance and was proven with satisfying generalization, robustness, and interpretability. Our study showed potential value in aiding and improving the diagnosis of EGC and facilitating the development of automated reporting in the future.

Interfering with CALCRL expression inhibits glioma proliferation, promotes apoptosis, and predicts prognosis in low-grade gliomas

Background

CALCRL is involved in a variety of key biological processes, including cell proliferation, apoptosis, angiogenesis, and inflammation. However, the role of CALCRL in glioma remains unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of differential CALCRL expression on the malignant progression of glioma and its value in glioma prognosis.

Methods

Sequencing data from glioma and normal tissues were downloaded from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) databases, and the downloaded data were statistically analyzed using bioinformatics tools and the corresponding R package. The expression of CALCRL in normal brain tissue and different grades of glioma tissue was detected by pathological and immunohistochemical staining of clinical glioma specimens. The expression of CALCRL in different glioma cell lines was detected by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), and the U87 cell line with high expression was selected to construct the CALCRL knockdown model by transfection with short hairpin (shRNA). The cell proliferation ability was detected by Celigo assay and 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, the ability of cell clone formation was detected by clone formation assay, and the level of apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry.

Results

The expression of CALCRL in glioma was significantly upregulated compared with that of normal tissue, especially in low-grade glioma (LGG) compared to glioblastoma, and the differential expression of CALCRL correlated significantly with the prognosis of LGG. Clinical pathology and immunohistochemistry showed that the expression of CALCRL was related to the pathological grade of glioma, and the highest expression was found in World Health Organization (WHO) grade Ⅲ glioma. The results of qRT-PCR showed that CALCRL expression was highest in the U87 cell line. After knockdown of CALCRL expression, the proliferation and clonogenic ability of U87 cells were significantly decreased, and the apoptosis rate was significantly increased.

Conclusions

CALCRL is highly expressed in LGG. Interfering with CALCRL expression inhibits glioma cell proliferation and promotes apoptosis, and thus has potential as a biomarker and therapeutic target for the prognosis of those with LGGs.

New insights into the phylogeny of the complex thalloid liverworts (Marchantiopsida) based on chloroplast genomes

Marchantiopsida (complex thalloid liverworts) are one of the earliest lineages of embryophytes (land plants), and well-known for their air pores and chambers, pegged rhizoids, and absence of organellular RNA editing sites. Despite their importance to an understanding of early embryophyte evolution, many key nodes within this class remain poorly resolved, owing to the paucity of genetic loci previously available for phylogenetic analyses. Here, we sequenced 54 plastomes, representing 28 genera, nearly all families, and all orders of Marchantiopsida. Based on these plastomes, we present a hypothesis of deep relationships within the class, and make the first investigations of gene contents and synteny. Overall, the Marchantiopsida plastomes were well-conserved, with the exception of the genus Cyathodium that has plastomes with higher GC content, fewer single sequence repeats (SSRs), and more structural variations, implying that this genus might possess RNA editing sites. Abundant repetitive elements and six highly divergent regions were identified as suitable for future infrafamilial taxonomic studies. The phylogenetic topology of Sphaerocarpales, Neohodgsoniales and Blasiales within Marchantiopsida was essentially congruent with previous studies but generally we obtained higher support values. Based on molecular evidence and previous morphological studies, we include Lunulariales in Marchantiales and suggest the retention of narrowed delimitation of monotypic families. The phylogenetic relationships within Marchantiales were better resolved, and 13 monophyletic families were recovered. Our analyses confirmed that the loss of intron 2 of ycf3 is a synapomorphy of Marchantiidae. Finally, we propose a new genus, Asterellopsis (Aytoniaceae), and present an updated classification of Marchantiopsida. The highly supported phylogenetic backbone provided here establishes a framework for future comparative and evolutionary studies of the complex thalloid liverworts.

Upadacitinib Therapy Reduces Ulcerative Colitis Symptoms as Early as Day 1 of Induction Treatment

BACKGROUND & AIMS

We evaluated the efficacy of once-daily (QD) upadacitinib 45 mg, an oral, reversible Janus kinase inhibitor, on early symptomatic improvement for ulcerative colitis (UC). Post hoc analyses were performed on pooled data from 2 replicate, phase 3, multicenter induction trials, U-ACHIEVE Induction and U-ACCOMPLISH, to determine the earliest time point of efficacy onset.

METHODS

Diary entry data through 14 days from the first dose of placebo or upadacitinib 45 mg QD were analyzed for daily improvement in UC symptoms (stool frequency, rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, and bowel urgency). Changes in inflammatory markers, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and fecal calprotectin (FCP) were assessed at week 2 and quality of life (QoL) at weeks 2 and 8. Regression analysis determined the association between changes in UC symptoms and the likelihood of achieving clinical remission/response per Adapted Mayo score at week 8.

RESULTS

Overall, 988 patients (n = 328 placebo, n = 660 upadacitinib) were analyzed. Patients treated with upadacitinib demonstrated significant improvements vs placebo in all UC symptoms between days 1 and 3 and maintained through day 14. A >50% reduction from baseline in hs-CRP and FCP levels was achieved by 75.7% and 48.2% of patients, respectively (P < .001 vs placebo). Increased rates of clinical remission/response per Partial Mayo score from week 2 (26.9%/59.4% upadacitinib 45 mg QD vs 4.3%/22.3% placebo, P < .001) and significant improvements in QoL at weeks 2 and 8 were observed. Early improvement in stool frequency and bowel urgency by day 3 and reductions in hs-CRP and FCP by week 2 were significantly associated with clinical remission/response at week 8.

CONCLUSIONS

Upadacitinib 45 mg QD provided rapid relief of UC symptoms from day 1.

Will climate change cause the global peatland to expand or contract? Evidence from the habitat shift pattern of Sphagnum mosses

Peatlands play a crucial role in the global carbon cycle. Sphagnum mosses (peat mosses) are considered to be the peatland ecosystem engineers and contribute to the carbon accumulation in the peatland ecosystems. As cold-adapted species, the dominance of Sphagnum mosses in peatlands will be threatened by climate warming. The response of Sphagnum mosses to climate change is closely related to the future trajectory of carbon fluxes in peatlands. However, the impact of climate change on the habitat suitability of Sphagnum mosses on a global scale is poorly understood. To predict the potential impact of climate change on the global distribution of Sphagnum mosses, we used the MaxEnt model to predict the potential geographic distribution of six Sphagnum species that dominate peatlands in the future (2050 and 2070) under two greenhouse gas emission scenarios (SSP1-2.6 and SSP5-8.5). The results show that the mean temperature of the coldest quarter, precipitation of the driest month, and topsoil calcium carbonate are the main factors affecting the habitat availability of Sphagnum mosses. As the climate warms, Sphagnum mosses tend to migrate northward. The suitable habitat and abundance of Sphagnum mosses increase extensively in the high-latitude boreal peatland (north of 50°N) and decrease on a large scale beyond the high-latitude boreal peatland. The southern edge of boreal peatlands would experience the greatest decline in the suitable habitat and richness of Sphagnum mosses with the temperature rising and would be a risk area for the transition from carbon sink to carbon source. The spatial-temporal pattern changes of Sphagnum mosses simulated in this study provide a reference for the development of management and conservation strategies for Sphagnum bogs.

Algebraic Persistent Fault Analysis of SKINNY_64 Based on S_Box Decomposition

Algebraic persistent fault analysis (APFA), which combines algebraic analysis with persistent fault attacks, brings new challenges to the security of lightweight block ciphers and has received widespread attention since its introduction. Threshold Implementation (TI) is one of the most widely used countermeasures for side channel attacks. Inspired by this method, the SKINNY block cipher adopts the S_box decomposition to reduce the number of variables in the set of algebraic equations and the number of Conjunctive Normal Form (CNF) equations in this paper, thus speeding up the algebraic persistent fault analysis and reducing the number of fault ciphertexts. In our study, we firstly establish algebraic equations for full-round faulty encryption, and then analyze the relationship between the number of fault ciphertexts required and the solving time in different scenarios (decomposed S_boxes and original S_box). By comparing the two sets of experimental results, the success rate and the efficiency of the attack are greatly improved by using S_box decomposition. In this paper, We can recover the master key in a minimum of 2000s using 11 pairs of plaintext and fault ciphertext, while the key recovery cannot be done in effective time using the original S_box expression equations. At the same time, we apply S_box decomposition to another kind of algebraic persistent fault analysis, and the experimental results show that using S_box decomposition can effectively reduce the solving time and solving success rate under the same conditions.

[Effect of dyslipidemia on clinical outcome of infertility patients receiving donor eggs]

Objective: To explore the effect of dyslipidemia on the clinical outcome of intracytoplasmic sperm injection-embryo transfer (ICSI-ET) in infertility patients receiving donor eggs. Methods: A total of 118 patients were selected to receive egg donors and ICSI-ET at the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University between April 2007 and December 2020. According to the levels of triacylglycerol, serum cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL), and low density lipoprotein, they were divided into dyslipidemia group (35 cases) and normal blood lipids group (83 cases). The influence of body mass index (BMI) and age was adjusted by 1∶1 propensity score matching, and the general condition and clinical outcome of the two groups were analyzed retrospectively. Finally, the relationship between lipid composition and clinical outcome was analyzed according to patients' age and BMI. Results: (1) Comparing the pre-matching dyslipidemia group with the normal blood lipids group, the BMI of the dyslipidemia group was significantly higher than that of the normal blood lipids group [(23.5±2.4) vs (22.4±2.7) kg/m²], and the embryo implantation rate was significantly lower than that of the normal blood lipids group [13.6% (8/59) vs 27.3% (36/132)], the differences were statistically significant (both P<0.05). (2) There were no significant differences in years of infertility, number of pregnancies, number of abortions, number of transplanted embryos, protocol of endometrial preparation, endometrial thickness on transplantation day and high quality embryo rate between the two groups, through propensity score matching (all P>0.05). The biochemical pregnancy rate [28.6% (10/35)], embryo implantation rate [13.6% (8/59)] and live birth rate [20.0% (7/35)] in dyslipidemia group were significantly lower than those in the normal blood lipids group (P<0.05). The clinical pregnancy rate was lower than that of the normal blood lipids group (P>0.05). (3) The results of stratified analysis showed that the level of HDL in the clinically non-pregnant group was significantly lower than that in the pregnant group in patients ≤ 35 years old [(1.5±0.3) vs (1.8±0.5) mmol/L; P<0.05]. In the overweight recipient patients, the level of HDL of the clinically non-pregnant group was lower than that of the pregnant group (P>0.05). Conclusions: Dyslipidemia significantly reduces the biochemical pregnancy rate, embryo implantation rate and live birth rate in patients with receiving donor eggs. Especially in patients aged ≤35 years old, the reduction of HDL is closely related to adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Upon a potential approach to regulate the targeting region of inhalable liposomes

Liposomes for inhalation have high biosafety and can achieve slow and controlled delivery, which are especially suitable for the treatment of lung diseases and have a promising clinical application prospect. However, liposomes for inhalation have the key bottleneck problem of the lack of strategies to control the targeting region, which restricts its clinical transformation. The root cause is the inability to control the bio-corona (BC) generation upon liposomes, which dominates the specific targeting regions. In order to overcome the above bottleneck, a high density hybrid liposome system based on distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine-N-[methoxy(polyethylene glycol)] (DSPE-PEG) may be a potential choice. The PEG chain in DSPE-PEG has “stealth” effect that can hinder the adsorption of biological molecules. When the density of DSPE-PEG hybridization is high, the “stealth” effect is more significant, and the total adsorption amount of liposomal BC can be effectively reduced. By optimizing the PEG chain structures of DSPE-PEG, viz PEG chain length and terminal group modification, DSPE-PEG high density hybrid liposomes can be endowed with the function of targeting site regulation based on BC domination effect. It is believed that this proposed system can promote the profound reform of the research paradigm of inhalational liposomes, and accelerate the development of related products.

Effect of Chromium Content on the Oxidation Behavior of a Ta Stabilized γ'-Strengthened Polycrystalline Co-30Ni-10Al-4W-4Ti-2Ta Alloy

The high-temperature oxidation behaviors of polycrystalline Co-30Ni-10Al-4W-4Ti-2Ta superalloys with Cr contents ranging from 1 to 5 at.% are characterized at 900 °C to provide benchmark data for the alloy design of the CoNi-based superalloys. The mass gain curves for all three alloys exhibit parabolic growth, and the addition of 5Cr at.% is sufficient to decrease the oxidation rate by two orders of magnitude compared to the Cr-free alloy. Furthermore, cross-sectional findings reveal that these three alloys form qualitatively similar oxide scales composed of an outer oxide layer of Co₃O₄ and CoAl₂O₄ phase on top of an Al₂O₃ scale, following the inner oxide layers of Cr₂O₃, TiO₂, and TiTaO₄, and internally oxidized Al₂O₃ precipitate. The alloy forms a chromium-rich oxide scale as the Cr addition increased, and the concentration of Cr in the scale/alloy interface increases, promoting the growth of Cr₂O₃, while CoAl₂O₄ and Co₃O₄ nucleation is inhibited. The results further indicate that Cr has a superior effect on improving the oxidation resistance of CoNi-based alloys and that a higher content of Cr can assist the formation of a continuous Al₂O₃, Cr₂O₃, and TiTaO₄ layers, which in turn hampers outer Co and Ni, and inward oxygen flux.

One-year follow-up study after patients with severe COVID-19 received human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells treatment

Background

The novel coronavirus is still mutating, and the pandemic continues. Meanwhile, many COVID-19 survivors have residual postinfection clinical manifestations. Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) have been shown to be effective in the early stages of COVID-19.

Objectives

The aim of this study was to investigate long-term safety and efficacy of treatment in patients with severe COVID-19 patients who had received hUC-MSCs therapy.

Methods

Twenty-five discharged patients who had severe COVID-19 (including the standard treatment group and the standard treatment plus hUC-MSCs group) were enrolled in a 1-year follow-up. The assessment considered adverse effects (including effects on liver and kidney function, coagulation, ECG, tumor marker, and so on), pulmonary function, St George’s Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ), postinfection sequelae and serum concentration of Krebs von den Lungen-6 (KL-6), malondialdehyde (MDA), H₂S, carnitine, and N-6 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (N-6 LC-PUFAs).

Measurements and main results

Pulmonary ventilation function had significantly improved at the 1-year follow-up in both the hUC-MSCs group and the control group compared with the 3-month follow-up (P < 0.01). Fatigue (60% [15/25]) remained the most common symptom at the 1-year follow-up. The rate of fatigue relief was significantly reduced in the hUC-MSCs group (25% [2/8]) compared to the control group (76.5% [13/17]) (P = 0.028). The level of KL-6 was significantly lower in the hUC-MSCs group (2585.5 ± 186.5 U/ml) than in the control group (3120.7 ± 158.3 U/ml) (P < 0.001). Compared with the control group, the hUC-MSCs group had a lower level of MDA (9.27 ± 0.54 vs. 9.91 ± 0.72 nmol/ml, P = 0.036). No obvious adverse effects were observed in the hUC-MSCs treatment group at 1 year after discharge.

Conclusions

Intravenous transplantation of hUC-MSCs was a safe approach in the long term in the treatment of patients with severe COVID-19. In addition, hUC-MSCs had a positive effect on postinfection sequelae in COVID-19 survivors.

Strongly Quantum-Confined Perovskite Nanowire Arrays for Color-Tunable Blue-Light-Emitting Diodes

Color tunability of perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) by mixed halide compositional engineering is one of the primary intriguing characteristics of PeLEDs. However, mixed halide PeLEDs are often susceptible to color red-shifting caused by halide ion segregation. In this work, strongly quantum-confined perovskite nanowires (QPNWs) made of CsPbBr₃ are grown in nanoporous anodic alumina templates using a closed space sublimation process. By tuning the pore size with atomic layer deposition, QPNWs with a diameter of 6.6 to 2.8 nm have been successfully obtained, with continuous tunable photoluminescence emission color from green (512 nm) to pure blue (467 nm). To better understand the photophysics of QPNWs, carrier dynamics and the benefit of alumina passivation are studied and discussed in detail. Eventually, PeLEDs using various diameters of CsPbBr₃ QPNWs are successfully fabricated with cyan color (492 nm) PeLEDs, achieving a record high 7.1% external quantum efficiency (EQE) for all CsPbBr₃-based cyan color PeLEDs. Sky blue (481 nm) and pure blue (467 nm) PeLEDs have also been successfully demonstrated, respectively. The work here demonstrates a different approach to achieve quantum-confined one-dimensional perovskite structures and color-tunable PeLEDs, particularly blue PeLEDs.

The Pseudomonas aeruginosa Secreted Protein PA3611 Promotes Bronchial Epithelial Cell Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition via Integrin αvβ6-Mediated TGF-β1-Induced p38/NF-κB Pathway Activation

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) is an important pathogen that has been proven to colonize and cause infection in the respiratory tract of patients with structural lung diseases and to lead to bronchial fibrosis. The development of pulmonary fibrosis is a complication of PA colonization of the airway, resulting from repeated infection, damage and repair of the epithelium. Bronchial epithelial cell epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) plays a vital role in bronchial fibrosis. To date, research on bronchial epithelial cell EMT caused by PA-secreted virulence factors has not been reported. Here, we found that PA3611 protein stimulation induced bronchial epithelial cell EMT with mesenchymal cell marker upregulation and epithelial cell marker downregulation. Moreover, integrin αvβ6 expression and TGF-β1 secretion were markedly increased, and p38 MAPK phosphorylation and NF-κB p65 subunit phosphorylation were markedly enhanced. Further research revealed that PA3611 promoted EMT via integrin αvβ6-mediated TGF-β1-induced p38/NF-κB pathway activation. The function of PA3611 was also verified in PA-infected rats, and the results showed that ΔPA3611 reduced lung inflammation and EMT. Overall, our results revealed that PA3611 promoted EMT via integrin αvβ6-mediated TGF-β1-induced p38/NF-κB pathway activation, suggesting that PA3611 acts as a crucial virulence factor in bronchial epithelial cell EMT and is a potential target for the clinical treatment of bronchial EMT and fibrosis caused by chronic PA infection.

Soybean Yield Preharvest Prediction Based on Bean Pods and Leaves Image Recognition Using Deep Learning Neural Network Combined With GRNN

Soybean yield is a highly complex trait determined by multiple factors such as genotype, environment, and their interactions. The earlier the prediction during the growing season the better. Accurate soybean yield prediction is important for germplasm innovation and planting environment factor improvement. But until now, soybean yield has been determined by weight measurement manually after soybean plant harvest which is time-consuming, has high cost and low precision. This paper proposed a soybean yield in-field prediction method based on bean pods and leaves image recognition using a deep learning algorithm combined with a generalized regression neural network (GRNN). A faster region-convolutional neural network (Faster R-CNN), feature pyramid network (FPN), single shot multibox detector (SSD), and You Only Look Once (YOLOv3) were employed for bean pods recognition in which recognition precision and speed were 86.2, 89.8, 80.1, 87.4%, and 13 frames per second (FPS), 7 FPS, 24 FPS, and 39 FPS, respectively. Therefore, YOLOv3 was selected considering both recognition precision and speed. For enhancing detection performance, YOLOv3 was improved by changing IoU loss function, using the anchor frame clustering algorithm, and utilizing the partial neural network structure with which recognition precision increased to 90.3%. In order to improve soybean yield prediction precision, leaves were identified and counted, moreover, pods were further classified as single, double, treble, four, and five seeds types by improved YOLOv3 because each type seed weight varies. In addition, soybean seed number prediction models of each soybean planter were built using PLSR, BP, and GRNN with the input of different type pod numbers and leaf numbers with which prediction results were 96.24, 96.97, and 97.5%, respectively. Finally, the soybean yield of each planter was obtained by accumulating the weight of all soybean pod types and the average accuracy was up to 97.43%. The results show that it is feasible to predict the soybean yield of plants in situ with high precision by fusing the number of leaves and different type soybean pods recognized by a deep neural network combined with GRNN which can speed up germplasm innovation and planting environmental factor optimization.
