Abstract
Sulfur-containing amino acids and peptides play critical roles in organisms. Thiol-ene reactions between the thiol residues of L-cysteine and the alkenyl fragments in the designed coupling partners serve as primary tools for constructing C─S bonds in the synthesis of unnatural sulfur-containing amino acid derivatives. These reactions are favored due to the preference for hydrogen transfer from thiol to β-sulfanyl carbon radical intermediates. In this paper, the study proposes utilizing carbon-centered radicals stabilized by the capto-dative effect, generated under photocatalytic conditions from N-aryl glycine derivatives. The aim is to compete with the thiol hydrogen, enabling radical C─C bond formation with β-sulfanyl carbon radicals. This protocol is robust in the presence of air and water, offers significant potential as a modular and efficient platform for synthesizing sulfur-containing amino acids and modifying peptides, particularly with abundant disulfides and styrenes.

Abstract
We present an organophotoredox-catalyzed direct Csp3-H alkylation of 3,4-dihydroquinoxalin-2-ones employing N-(acyloxy)pthalimides to provide corresponding products in good yields. A broad spectrum of NHPI esters (1°, 2°, 3°, and sterically encumbered) participates in the photoinduced alkylation of a variety of 3,4-dihydroquinoxalin-2-ones. In general, mild conditions, broad scope with good functional group tolerance, and scalability are the salient features of this direct alkylation process.

Abstract
We disclose N'-arylidene-N-acryloyltosylhydrazides as novel skeletons for the synthesis of biologically relevant alkylated pyrazolones through a photoinduced radical cascade with N-(acyloxy)pthalimides as readily available alkyl surrogates. The reaction proceeds through the formation of a photoactivated electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complex between alkyl N-(acyloxy)phthalimide (NHPI) esters and LiI/PPh3 as a commercially available donor system. The reaction exhibits a broad scope and scalability, thereby enabling synthesis of a broad spectrum of functionally orchestrated alkylated pyrazolones under mild and transition-metal-free conditions.

Abstract
An organo-photoredox catalyzed gem-difluoroallylation of glycine with α-trifluoromethyl alkenes via direct C(sp3)-H functionalization of glycine and C-F bond activation of α-trifluoromethyl alkenes has been described. As a consequence, a broad range of gem-difluoroalkene-containing unnatural amino acids are afforded in moderate to excellent yields. This reaction exhibits multiple merits such as readily available starting materials, broad substrate scope, and mild reaction conditions. The feasibility of this reaction has been highlighted by the late-stage modification of several peptides as well as the improved in vitro antifungal activity of compound 3v toward Valsa mali compared to that with commercial azoxystrobin.

Abstract
Herein, we report a heterogeneous visible light-driven preparation of α-alkylated glycine derivatives. This approach employed a β-ketoenamine-linked covalent organic framework (2D-COF-4) as the heterogeneous photocatalyst and N-hydroxy phthalimide (NHPI) esters as the alkyl radical sources. Numerous glycine derivatives, including dipeptides, were precisely and efficiently alkylated under visible light-driven reaction conditions. Based on the excellent photoactivity and organic reaction compatibility of 2D-COF-4, this alkylation could proceed flexibly in a green solvent (ethanol) without any other additives. The photocatalyst and phthalimide were fruitfully recycled with a simple workup procedure, revealing a high ecoscale value and low environmental factor (E-factor).

Abstract
A visible-light-induced decarboxylative cascade reaction of acryloylbenzamides with alkyl N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHP) esters for the synthesis of various 4-alkyl isoquinolinediones mediated by triphenylphosphine (PPh3) and sodium iodide (NaI) was developed. This operationally simple protocol proceeded via the photoactivation of electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complexes between N-hydroxyphthalimide esters and NaI/PPh3, resulting in multiple carbon-carbon bond formations without the use of precious metal complexes or synthetically elaborate organic dyes, which provided an alternative practical approach to synthesize diverse isoquinoline-1,3(2H,4H)-dione derivatives.

Abstract
A facile and efficient method was reported for Cu-catalyzed selective α-alkylation processes of amino acids/peptides and α-bromo esters/ketones through a radical-radical coupling pathway. The reaction displays an excellent functional group tolerance and broad substrate scope, allowing access to desired products in moderate to excellent yields. Notably, this method is distinguished by site-specificity and exhibits total selectivity for aryl glycine motifs over other amino acid units. Furthermore, the practicality of this strategy is certified by the efficient synthesis of the novel SAHA phenylalanine-containing analogue (SPACA).

Abstract
We report a photoredox system comprising sodium iodide, triphenyl phosphine, and N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) that can form a self-assembled tetrameric electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complex with diaryliodonium reagents (DAIRs) and furnish aryl radicals upon visible light irradiation. This practical mode of activation of DAIRs enables arylation of an array of heterocycles under mild conditions to provide the respective heteroaryl-(hetero)aryl assembly in moderate to excellent yields. Detailed mechanistic investigations comprising photophysical and DFT studies provided insight into the reaction mechanism.

Abstract
Polyfluoroaromatic compounds play crucial roles in medicinal and material science. However, the synthesis of alkylated polyfluoroarenes has been relatively underdeveloped. In this study, we devised a novel decarboxylative coupling reaction between aliphatic N-hydroxyphthalimide esters and polyfluorostyrene, leveraging the photochemical activity of electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complexes. This method offers simple reaction conditions, a broad substrate scope, and excellent functional group tolerance. Furthermore, we have demonstrated the practicality of this protocol through late-stage polyfluoroaryl modification of biologically active molecules using readily available carboxylic acids as starting materials, thus providing an important supplement to the current toolbox for accessing alkylated polyfluoroaryl motifs.

Abstract
Acyl radicals are significant synthetic active species in organic synthesis. However, their generation via green and compatible methods remains challenging. Herein, we report an unprecedented visible-light-mediated approach for generating aryl acyl radicals from readily available triazine esters. This protocol with mild and redox-neutral conditions affords a diverse array of oxindoles attached to alcohol groups in a single operation. The recycling of leaving groups and a range of visible-light-mediated reactions using triazine ester as an acyl radical precursor demonstrate the synthetic potential of this methodology.

Abstract
A new method for the synthesis of α-amino phenylpropanoids under blue light-emitting diode irradiation has been developed through α-C-H benzylation of readily available N-phenyl glycine ester with benzyl oxalates as a coupling partner under mild conditions. A range of N-phenyl glycine esters were successfully converted to α-amino phenylpropanoid products in moderate to good yields. The utility of this methodology is underlined by its application to the late-state modification of natural products.

Abstract
We disclose a transition-metal-free NaI/PPh3-mediated direct C-H alkylation of azauracils using N-(acyloxy)pthalimides (NHPIs) as readily available alkyl surrogates under visible light irradiation. Detailed mechanistic studies reveal formation of a photoactivated electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complex between NaI/PPh3, TMEDA, and alkyl NHPI ester and establish the crucial role of TMEDA in increasing the activity of the photoredox system. The reaction demonstrates a broad scope, scalability, and appreciable functional group tolerance. A variety of azauracils are shown to undergo alkylation by primary, secondary, and tertiary NHPI esters under mild conditions, furnishing the desired products in good to excellent yields.

Abstract
Metal- and additive-free, photoinduced decarboxylative radical alkylation-cyclization of CF3-acrylamides with alkyl redox-active esters provided the corresponding quaternary CF3-oxindole derivatives in good yields. Notably, diaryliodonium salts also efficiently participated in the arylation-cyclization of CF3-acrylamides in environmentally benign H2O as a solvent. The present approach has been extended for the concise synthesis of CF3-attached indoline alkaloid analogues, i.e., CF3-(±)-desoxyeseroline, CF3-(±)-esermethole, and CF3-(±) progesterone receptor antagonists. The preliminary mechanistic studies revealed that the reaction is likely to proceed through initial photoexcitation of redox-active ester/diaryliodonium salts followed by the SET process with acrylamide.

Abstract
A simple and practical electron donor-acceptor (EDA) strategy to synthesize various 3-alkylated coumarins from easily available coumarins and naturally abundant carboxylic acids under photocatalyst-, oxidant-, and additive-free and mild conditions is reported. Using Na2S as the catalytic electron donor, a series of primary, secondary, and tertiary carbon radicals can be efficiently generated, and the EDA complex can be regenerated without an alkaline additive.

Abstract
Electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complexes provide a means to initiate radical reactions under visible light irradiation using substrates that do not absorb visible light individually. Catalytic approaches to complex formation are vital for advancing this synthetic strategy as it decouples the complexation and photogeneration of radicals from substrate functionalization, a limitation inherent to stoichiometric approaches that restricts structural diversity. This Synopsis highlights recent developments in EDA complex photochemistry in which either the donor or acceptor are employed catalytically.

Abstract
Reactions of acceptor-substituted aryl iodides and bromides with potassium thiocarboxylates under white light irradiation allow for the preparation of S-aryl thioesters including synthetically versatile S-aryl thioacetates. This transition-metal and external photocatalyst-free method features extremely mild reaction conditions compared with those used in transition-metal-catalyzed protocols. Reactions proceed via the initial formation of an electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complex in the ground state, which was supported by UV-vis spectra. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spin-trapping experiments using phenyl-N-tert-butylnitrone (PBN) have revealed the radical nature of the reaction.

Abstract
Excitation of photoactive electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complexes is an effective way to generate radicals. Applications in a catalytic regime typically use catalytic donors. Herein, we report that readily available electron-poor tetrachlorophthalimides can act as effective organocatalytic acceptors to trigger the formation of EDA complexes with a variety of radical precursors not amenable to previous catalytic methods. Excitation with visible light generates carbon radicals under mild conditions. The versatility of this EDA complex catalytic platform allowed us to develop mechanistically distinct radical reactions, including in combination with a cobalt-based catalytic system. Quantum yield measurements established that a closed catalytic cycle is operational, which hints at the ability of tetrachlorophthalimides to readily turn over and govern each catalytic cycle.

Abstract
Under visible light irradiation, o-phosphinophenolate functions as an easily accessible photoredox catalyst to activate trifluoromethyl groups in trifluoroacetamides, trifluoroacetates, and trifluoromethyl (hetero)arenes to deliver corresponding difluoromethyl radicals. It works in relay with a thiol hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) catalyst to enable selective defluoroalkylation and hydrodefluorination. The reaction allows for the facile synthesis of a broad scope of difluoromethylene-incorporated carbonyl and (hetero)aromatic compounds, which are valuable fluorinated intermediates of interest in the pharmaceutical industry. The ortho-diphenylphosphino substituent, which is believed to facilitate photoinduced electron transfer, plays an essential role in the redox reactivity of phenolate. In addition to trifluoromethyl groups, pentafluoroethyl groups could also be selectively defluoroalkylated. Photoredox catalysis can strongly reduce and cleave unactivated chemical bonds via photoinduced electron transfer. Here the authors use o-phosphinophenolate for photocatalytic C–F activation of a wide range of trifluoromethyl groups in trifluoroacetamides, trifluoroacetates, and trifluoromethyl(hetero)arenes to deliver corresponding difluoromethyl radicals.

Abstract
Diazirines have been recently demonstrated to serve as electrophilic amination reagents that afford diaziridines, versatile heterocycles that are readily transformed into amines, hydrazines, and nitrogen-containing heterocycles. Here, we report the photodecarboxylative amination of redox-active esters with diazirines using inexpensive photoactivators under mild conditions with an enhanced scope for primary substrates. The stability of diazirines to blue light is demonstrated, paving the way for further research into other photochemical amination methods with these unique heterocycles.

Abstract
Chiral cis-cyclopropanes are strained rigid analogues of alkyl chains, whose study and application are limited by their difficult synthesis. A modular approach from olefin materials is enabled by the discovery of the electron donor-acceptor (EDA) interaction between 2-substituted benzothiazolines and N-hydroxyphthalimide esters. These complexes are activated by visible light without photocatalysts, and the benzothiazoline reagent plays a triple role as a photoreductant, a stereoselective hydrogen-atom donor, and a Brønsted acid. Beyond the enantioselective synthesis of cis-cyclopropanes, these results introduce benzothiazolines as accessible and easily tunable self-sensitized photoreductants.

Abstract
Doubly decarboxylative, photoredox synthesis of 4-substituted-chroman-2-ones and 2-substituted-chroman-4-ones is described. The reaction involves two independent decarboxylation processes: the first one initiating the cycle and the second completing the process. Visible light, photoredox catalyst, base, anhydrous solvent and inert atmosphere constitute the key parameters for the success of the developed transformation. The protocol proved applicable for coumarin-3-carboxylic acids and chromone-3-carboxylic acids as well as N-(acyloxy)phthalimide which served as precursors of the corresponding alkyl radicals. The manuscript describes the doubly decarboxylative Giese reaction between N-(acyloxy)phthalimides and coumarin-3-carboxylic acids or chromone-3-carboxylic acids.![]()

Abstract
A catalyst- and additive-free decarbonylative trifluoromethylthiolation of aldehyde feedstocks has been developed. This operationally simple, scalable, and open-to-air transformation is driven by the selective photoexcitation of electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complexes, stemming from the association of 1,4-dihydropyridines (donor) with N-(trifluoromethylthio)phthalimide (acceptor), to trigger intermolecular single-electron transfer events under ambient- and visible light-promoted conditions. Extension to other electron acceptors enables the synthesis of thiocyanates and thioesters, as well as the difunctionalization of [1.1.1] propellane. The mechanistic intricacies of this photochemical paradigm are elucidated through a combination of experimental efforts and high-level quantum mechanical calculations [dispersion-corrected (U)DFT, DLPNO-CCSD(T), and TD-DFT]. This comprehensive study highlights the necessity for EDA complexation for efficient alkyl radical generation. Computation of subsequent ground state pathways reveals that SH2 addition of the alkyl radical to the intermediate radical EDA complex is extremely exergonic and results in a charge transfer event from the dihydropyridine donor to the N-(trifluoromethylthio)phthalimide acceptor of the EDA complex. Experimental and computational results further suggest that product formation also occurs via SH2 reaction of alkyl radicals with 1,2-bis(trifluoromethyl)disulfane, generated in-situ through combination of thiyl radicals.
