Stereomeric effects of bisPC71BM on polymer solar cell performance

Structure-Property Relationships for the Electronic Applications of Bis-Adduct Isomers of Phenyl-C61 Butyric Acid Methyl Ester

Higher adducts of a fullerene, such as the bis-adduct of PCBM (bis-PCBM), can be used to achieve shallower molecular orbital energy levels than, for example, PCBM or C60. Substituting the bis-adduct for the parent fullerene is useful to increase the open-circuit voltage of organic solar cells or achieve better energy alignment as electron transport layers in, for example, perovskite solar cells. However, bis-PCBM is usually synthesized as a mixture of structural isomers, which can lead to both energetic and morphological disorder, negatively affecting device performance. Here, we present a comprehensive study on the molecular properties of 19 pure bis-isomers of PCBM using a variety of characterization methods, including ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, single crystal structure, and (time-dependent) density functional theory calculation. We find that the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of such bis-isomers can be tuned to be up to 170 meV shallower than PCBM and up to 100 meV shallower than the mixture of unseparated isomers. The isolated bis-isomers also show an electron mobility in organic field-effect transistors of up to 4.5 × 10-2 cm2/(V s), which is an order of magnitude higher than that of the mixture of bis-isomers. These properties enable the fabrication of the highest performing bis-PCBM organic solar cell to date, with the best device showing a power conversion efficiency of 7.2%. Interestingly, we find that the crystallinity of bis-isomers correlates negatively with electron mobility and organic solar cell device performance, which we relate to their molecular symmetry, with a lower symmetry leading to more amorphous bis-isomers, less energetic disorder, and higher dimensional electron transport. This work demonstrates the potential of side chain engineering for optimizing the performance of fullerene-based organic electronic devices.

Concise Synthesis of Low-Cost Fullerene Derivatives as Electron Transport Materials for Efficient Air-processed Invert Perovskite Solar Cells

Due to its excellent charge extraction ability, fullerene derivative phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) is widely used as electron transport materials (ETM) in invert perovskite solar cells. However, the complicated synthetic routes and low productivity of PCBM limiting its commercial application. Moreover, the insufficient defect passivation ability of PCBM is contributed to inferior device performance because it lacks hetero-atoms/groups with lone pair electrons, it is highly desirable for exploration of new fullerene-based ETM with excellent photoelectric properties. Therefore, three new fullerene malonate derivatives were synthesized by simple two-step reaction with a high yield, and then developed as electron transport materials in invert perovskite solar cells which fabricated in air condition. The constituent thiophene and pyridyl group of the fullerene-based ETM can heighten the chemical interaction between under-coordinated Pb²⁺ and lone pair electrons of N, S atom by electrostatic interaction. Hence, the air-processed unencapsulated device with new fullerene-based electron transport materials (C₆₀-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl) malonate (C₆₀-PMME)) can obtain a enhanced power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.38%, which is significantly higher than the PCBM-based devices (16.64%). Additionally, the C₆₀-PMME-based devices exhibit significantly more outstanding long-term stability than PCBM-based devices, owing to the strong hydrophobic properties of these new fullerene-based ETM. This study shows the promising potentials of these new low-cost fullerene derivatives as ETM to replace commercially used fullerene derivatives PCBM.

Efficient and stable inverted perovskite solar cells enabled by inhibition of self-aggregation of fullerene electron-transporting compounds

Fullerene-based electron-transporting layers (ETLs) significantly influence the defect passivation and device performance of inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the π-cage structures of fullerenes lead to a strong tendency to self-aggregate, which affects the long-term stability of the corresponding PSCs. Experimental results revealed that [6,6]-phenyl-C₆₁-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM)-based ETLs exhibit a certain degree of self-aggregation that affects the stability of the device, particularly under continuous irradiation stress. To modulate the aggregation behavior, we replaced a methyl hydrogen of PCBM with a phenyl group to yield [6,6]-phenyl-C₆₁-butyric acid benzyl ester (PCBB). As verified through X-ray crystallography, this minor structural modification results in more non-covalent intermolecular interactions, which effectively enhanced the electron-transporting ability of the PCBB-based ETL and led to an efficiency approaching 20%. Notably, the enhanced intermolecular forces of PCBB suppressed its self-aggregation, and the corresponding device showed significantly improved stability, retaining approximately 90% of its initial efficiency after 600 h under one-sun irradiation with maximum power point tracking. These findings provide a viable approach for the design of new fullerene derivatives to tune their intermolecular interactions to suppress self-aggregation within the ETL for high-performance PSCs.

Mixed Fullerene Electron Transport Layers with Fluorocarbon Chains Assembling on the Surface: A Moisture-Resistant Coverage for Perovskite Solar Cells

In p-i-n structure perovskite solar cells (PSCs), the most prevalent electron transport layer (ETL), [6, 6]-phenyl-C₆₁-butyric acid methyl ester (PC₆₁BM), acts as both electron extractor and protective coverage to the underlayer perovskite. Notably, multifunctional mixed fullerene ETLs show great potential in further improving both the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of PSCs compared to the single PC₆₁BM ETL. In this work, we reported the mixed fullerene ETLs comprising of PC₆₁BM and its two analogs with different length of fluorocarbon chains, [6, 6]-phenyl-C₆₁-buryric acid 1H,1H-trifluoro-1-ethyl ester (abbreviated, CF₃-PC₆₁BM) and [6, 6]-phenyl-C₆₁-buryric acid 1H, 1H-tridecafluoro-1-heptyl ester (abbreviated, C₆F₁₃-PC₆₁BM). We obtained excellent PCEs of 18.37% and 17.71% for 1 wt % CF₃-PC₆₁BM- and C₆F₁₃-PC₆₁BM-based PSCs (1 wt % addition of PC₆₁BM) with CH₃NH₃PbI₃ (MAPbI₃) perovskites, respectively. Moreover, champion PCEs of ∼19% were obtained based on the CsFAMAPbIBr perovskites. Subsequent experiments demonstrated that the fluorocarbon chains of CF₃-PC₆₁BM and C₆F₁₃-PC₆₁BM assembled at the surfaces of ETLs with the formation of thin-layer moisture-resistant protective coverage above perovskite. Results show that it significantly retarded water penetrating down to perovskite layers and led to optimal humidity stability under ambient atmosphere.

Hybrid Fullerene-Based Electron Transport Layers Improving the Thermal Stability of Perovskite Solar Cells

The structure-dependent thermal stability of fullerene electron transport layers (ETLs) and its impact on device stability have been underrated for years. Based on cocrystallographic understanding, herein, we develop a thermally stable ETL comprising a hybrid layer of [6,6]-phenyl-C₆₁-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) and [6,6]-phenyl-C₆₁-propylbenzene (PCPB). By tuning the weight ratios of PCBM and PCPB to influence the noncovalent intermolecular interactions and packing of fullerene derivatives, we obtained a champion device based on the 20PCPB (20 wt % addition of PCPB into the mixture of PCBM/PCPB) ETL and excellent thermal stability of 500 h under 85 °C thermal aging in a N₂ atmosphere in the dark. The present work exemplifies that cocrystallography can be a precise tool to probe the interaction and aggregation of fullerene derivatives in ETLs, and mixed fullerene derivatives can be sought as promising ETLs to enhance the long-term stability of perovskite solar cells under high-temperature working environments.

Double Negatively Curved C70 Growth through a Heptagon-Involving Pathway

All previously reported C₇₀ isomers have positive curvature and contain 12 pentagons in addition to hexagons. Herein, we report a new C₇₀ species with two negatively curved heptagon moieties and 14 pentagons. This unconventional heptafullerene[70] containing two symmetric heptagons, referred to as dihept-C₇₀ , grows in the carbon arc by a theoretically supported pathway in which the carbon cluster of a previously reported C₆₆ species undergoes successive C₂ insertion via a known heptafullerene[68] intermediate with low energy barriers. As identified by X-ray crystallography, the occurrence of heptagons facilitates a reduction in the angle of the π-orbital axis vector in the fused pentagons to stabilize dihept-C₇₀ . Chlorination at the intersection of a heptagon and two adjacent pentagons can greatly enlarge the HOMO-LUMO gap, which makes dihept-C₇₀ Cl₆ isolable by chromatography. The synthesis of dihept-C₇₀ Cl₆ offers precious clues with respect to the fullerene formation mechanism in the carbon-clustering process.

cis-1 Isomers of tethered bismethano[70]fullerene as electron acceptors in organic photovoltaics

Isomer-controlled [70]fullerene bis-adducts can achieve high performance as electron-acceptors in organic photovoltaics (OPVs) because of their stronger absorption intensities than [60]fullerene derivatives, higher LUMO energy levels than mono-adducts, and less structural and energetic disorder than random isomer mixtures. Especially, attractive are cis-1 isomers that have the closest proximity of addends owing to their plausible more regular close packed structure. In this study, propylene-tethered cis-1 bismethano[70]fullerene with two methyl, ethyl, phenyl, or thienyl groups were rationally designed and prepared for the first time to investigate the OPV performances with an amorphous conjugated polymer donor (PCDTBT). The cis-1 products were found to be a mixture of two regioisomers, α-1-α and α-1-β as major and minor components, respectively. Among them, the cis-1 product with two ethyl groups (Et₂-cis-1-[70]PBC) showed the highest OPV performance, encouraging us to isolate its α-1-α isomer (Et₂-α-1-α-[70]PBC) by high-performance liquid chromatography. OPV devices based on Et₂-cis-1-[70]PBC and Et₂-α-1-α-[70]PBC with PCDTBT showed open-circuit voltages of 0.844 V and 0.864 V, respectively, which were higher than that of a device with typical [70]fullerene mono-adduct, [70]PCBM (0.831 V) with a lower LUMO level. However, the short-circuit current densities and resultant power conversion efficiencies of the devices with Et₂-cis-1-[70]PBC (9.24 mA cm⁻², 4.60%) and Et₂-α-1-α-[70]PBC (6.35 mA cm⁻², 3.25%) were lower than those of the device with [70]PCBM (10.8 mA cm⁻², 5.8%) due to their inferior charge collection efficiencies. The results obtained here reveal that cis-1 [70]fullerene bis-adducts do not guarantee better OPV performance and that further optimization of the substituent structures is necessary.

cis-1 Isomers of [70]fullerene bis-adducts were utilized as electron-acceptors in organic photovoltaic devices for the first time.
