Relationship between pediatric obesity and otitis media with effusion

Causal Relationship Between Body Mass Index and Risk of Otitis Media with Effusion in Children: A Mendelian Randomization Study

Background

Body mass index(BMI) in children appears to be associated with Otitis media with effusion(OME) in observational studies, but the causal relationship is not clear.

Methods

A two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study was used to explore the causal relationship between childhood BMI and OME in people of European ancestry. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of childhood BMI were used as exposures (n = 61,111), while GWAS of OME were used as outcomes (n = 429,290). The weighted inverse variance method (IVW) was used as a baseline method to test for causality. In addition, MR-Egger, simple mode analysis, weighted median, and weighted mode were used as complementary methods.MR-PRESSO analysis, MR-Egger intercept analysis, and Cochran's Q statistical analysis were also used to detect possible directional heterogeneity and polymorphism. To assess this association, we used ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (ci). All statistical analyses were performed in R.

Results

We selected 22 genome-wide significant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from GWAS as instrumental variables (IVW). the IVW approach showed evidence supporting a causal relationship between BMI and OME in children (β = 0.265, SE = 0.113, P = 0.018). MR-Egger regression showed that targeted polymorphisms were unlikely to bias the results bias (intercept=-0.022; P = 0.488), but there was no causal relationship between BMI and OME (β = 0.584, SE = 0.465, P = 0.224). Although the results of the IVW and MR Egger analyses were not consistent, the IVW analysis maintained higher precision, and the Cochran Q test, heterogeneity and polymorphism tests showed no heterogeneity, no directionality and no polymorphism.

Conclusions

MR studies suggest that genetically predicted body mass index in childhood is associated with an increased risk of OME. Notably, given the limitations of this study, the mechanism of association between body mass index and OME in childhood needs further investigation. These results support the importance of effective management of obesity, which may reduce OME occurrence and decrease OME recurrence.

Otitis Media and Obesity-An Unusual Relationship in Children

Otitis media (OM) represents a public health matter, being the main cause of preventable hearing loss in pediatric patients. Besides well-established risk factors for developing OM, such as craniofacial abnormalities, prematurity, low birth weight, or tobacco exposure, there is evidence that obesity could be associated with a high incidence of OM. Our aim is to perform a literature review on the state of current published research on the relationship between OM and obesity and to discuss the interconnectivity between these two entities. We conducted an electronic search in PubMed and EMBASE databases. Out of 176 references, 15 articles were included in our study. Our findings suggest that obesity and overweight might be risk factors for developing OM, and vice versa. The main mechanisms for developing OM in obese patients include alteration in cytokine profile, increased gastroesophageal reflux, and/or fat accumulation. Conversely, ear infections exposure might increase the risk of obesity, mostly by taste changes through middle ear cavity inflammation.

Impact of pediatric obesity on the prevalence and outcome of otitis media with effusion

INTRODUCTION

Otitis Media with Effusion (OME) is the most common cause of hearing impairment in the pediatric population. Pediatric obesity is another major health issue with numerous reported health consequences, however, published studies about its role in OME are limited. This study aims to investigate the impact of pediatric obesity on the prevalence and outcome of OME.

METHODS

A case-control study on 112 children aged 2-18 years who underwent ventilation tube insertion for the treatment of OME during 2015-2017 (cases) and 130 children with no history of OME matching for age and gender (control group). Each group was divided into four subgroups based on BMI by age and gender. The differences in the BMI between the cases and the control group were explored. The cases were further divided into obese and non-obese subgroups and were compared to determine the impact of obesity on the presentation and outcome of OME.

RESULTS

Mean±SD BMI is significantly higher in the cases compared to the control group (19.98±5.20 vs. 17.25±4.21) (P=0.032). Obesity is significantly more prevalent in patients with OME compared to the control group (25.0% vs. 19.2%) (P=0.021). Obese OME patients are more prone to develop recurrence compared to non-obese OME patients (OR 3.51, 95% CI1.12, 11.01).

CONCLUSION

Pediatric obesity might be associated with the development of OME. Moreover, obese OME patients are more prone to develop recurrence compared to non-obese patients.

Are Children Scheduled for Ventilation Tubes Insertion Overweight? A Cohort of Israeli Children

OBJECTIVE

To study the hypothesis that children scheduled for ventilation tube insertion (VTI), a surrogate procedure reflecting otitis media (OM) presence, are overweight or obese.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

Charts of Israeli children aged 0 to 9 years undergoing VTI with or without adenoidectomy between 9/1/17 and 3/31/19 in a secondary level hospital were retrospectively identified. We compared their mean body mass index (BMI, kg/m²) to the mean BMI of a control group comprised of children who underwent surgeries unrelated to OM (fracture fixation/reduction, inguinal/umbilical hernia repair, meatotomy, appendectomy). BMI measurements were plotted on gender- and age-matched curves to determine BMI percentile, and were also compared to the national pediatric overweight/obesity data. Normal weight was defined as BMI percentile <85%, overweight was BMI percentile between 85% and 97%, and obesity was BMI percentile >97%.

RESULTS

The VTI group included 83 children (mean age: 3.5 ± 1.8 years). The control group included 77 children (mean age: 6.3 ± 1.9 years). No statistically significant difference was found in the mean BMI values between both groups (P = .22). When compared to age- and gender-adjusted 50th BMI percentile of the general pediatric population, the mean BMI of the VTI group was significantly higher: for boys, 16.9 versus 15.2 (P < .01), and for girls, 16.6 versus 15.3 (P = .03), but not in the control group: P = .16 (boys) and P = .11 (girls).

CONCLUSION

Children undergoing VTI were overweight when compared to their age- and gender-matched peers. This observation was more noticeable in boys.

Updated Guidelines for the Management of Acute Otitis Media in Children by the Italian Society of Pediatrics: Prevention

BACKGROUND

In recent years, new information has been acquired regarding the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of acute otitis media (AOM). The Italian Pediatric Society, therefore, decided to issue an update to the Italian Pediatric Society guidelines published in 2010.

METHODS

The search was conducted on Pubmed, and only those studies regarding the pediatric age alone, in English or Italian, published between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2018, were included. Each study included in the review was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) methodology. The quality of the systematic reviews was evaluated using the A MeaSurement Tool to Assess systematic Reviews (AMSTAR) 2 appraisal tool. The guidelines were formulated using the GRADE methodology by a multidisciplinary panel of experts.

RESULTS

The importance of eliminating risk factors (passive smoking, environmental pollution, use of pacifier, obesity, limitation of day-care center attendance) and the promotion of breastfeeding and hygiene practices (nasal lavages) was confirmed. The importance of pneumococcal vaccination in the prevention of AOM was reiterated with regard to the prevention of both the first episode of AOM and recurrences. Grommets can be inserted in selected cases of recurrent AOM that did not respond to all other prevention strategies. Antibiotic prophylaxis is not recommended for the prevention of recurrent AOM, except in certain carefully selected cases. The use of complementary therapies, probiotics, xylitol and vitamin D is not recommended.

CONCLUSIONS

The prevention of episodes of AOM requires the elimination of risk factors and pneumococcal and influenza vaccination. The use of other products such as probiotics and vitamin D is not supported by adequate evidence.

Role of Obesity in Otorhinolaryngologic Diseases

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

Obesity is a major public health problem associated with various diseases. Improving obesity control and achieving greater patient satisfaction are critical unmet needs. Various otorhinolaryngologic diseases can have negative effects on quality of life or actual health status depending on their type. Over the past decade, the relationship between obesity and otorhinolaryngologic conditions has been investigated. The purpose of this review was to discuss the relationship between obesity and otorhinolaryngological diseases.

RECENT FINDINGS

This is a narrative review on the current state of incidence, effects, and associated mechanisms between obesity and otorhinolaryngologic diseases. In various otologic diseases, otitis media (OM) and hearing loss (HL) are associated with obesity. In rhinologic parts, chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) were significantly associated with obesity. Most of these diseases are reported to have higher susceptibility and severity as body mass index (BMI) increases. However, the incidence of head and neck cancer (HNC) was inversely associated with obesity, especially central adiposity. The relevance of obesity in laryngopharyngeal reflux disease (LPR) and allergic rhinitis (AR) has yet to be clarified, and this remains controversial. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of incidence, effects, and associated mechanisms between obesity and otorhinolaryngologic diseases. Various otorhinolaryngological diseases are related to obesity. As obesity can be a negative risk factor in these otorhinolaryngologic diseases, early diagnosis and treatment of these diseases in obese patients will be critical.

Relationship between chronic otitis media with effusion and overweight or obesity in children

OBJECTIVES

Otitis media with effusion and obesity are both common in childhood and might share some immunological alterations. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between chronic otitis media with effusion and childhood overweight or obesity, including the potential effects of adenoid or tonsillar hypertrophy on that relationship.

METHODS

This study included 60 children with chronic otitis media with effusion and 86 healthy children aged from 2 to 10 years. Measures of height and weight were used to calculate the body mass index, weight for height and weight z score.

RESULTS

The prevalence of overweight or obesity was higher in children with chronic otitis media with effusion, according to the weight for height percentiles (p = 0.012). However, neither the presence of adenoid or tonsillar hypertrophy nor the degree of adenoid hypertrophy was associated with overweight or obesity.

CONCLUSION

Overweight and obesity might be risk factors for developing chronic otitis media with effusion, or vice versa.

Oral sensory nerve damage: Causes and consequences

Oral sensations (i.e., taste, oral somatosensation, retronasal olfaction) are integrated into a composite sense of flavor, which guides dietary choices with long-term health impact. The nerves carrying this input are vulnerable to peripheral damage from multiple sources (e.g., otitis media, tonsillectomy, head injury), and this regional damage can boost sensations elsewhere in the mouth because of central interactions among nerve targets. Mutual inhibition governs this compensatory process, but individual differences lead to variation in whole-mouth outcomes: some individuals are unaffected, others experience severe loss, and some encounter sensory increases that may (if experienced early in life) elevate sweet-fat palatability and body mass. Phantom taste, touch, or pain sensations (e.g., burning mouth syndrome) may also occur, particularly in those expressing the most taste buds. To identify and treat these conditions effectively, emerging clinical tests measure regional vs. whole-mouth sensation, stimulated vs. phantom cues, and oral anatomy. Scaling methods allowing valid group comparisons have strongly aided these efforts. Overall, advances in measuring oral sensory function in health and disease show promise for understanding the varied clinical consequences of nerve damage.

Risk factors for respiratory infections among children attending day care centres

BACKGROUND

Upper respiratory tract infection (URTI), lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) and acute otitis media (AOM) are common in children attending day care centres.

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to characterize the risk factors of URTI, LRTI and AOM in children attending day care.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted in children aged up to 3 years (n = 152) of six day care centres in Porto. Logistic regression was used on independent variables: mother-related, household-related, child-related and day care-related risk factors as predictors of the dependent variables: URTI, LRTI and AOM.

RESULTS

The risk of URTI increased as the number of children decreased [odds ratio (OR) = 0.620, 95% CI = 0.411-0.935], as the area per child decreased (OR = 0.434, 95% CI = 0.206-0.914) and as the disinfection of WC/diapers-change increased (OR = 2.56, 95% CI = 1.089-6.017). There was a higher risk of URTI if nasal aspirators (OR = 6.763, 95% CI = 1.022-44.753), rather than physiologic serum (OR = 5.296, 95% CI = 1.097-25.559), were used at day care centres. The risk of LRTI increased as the household size decreased (OR = 0.213, 95% CI = 0.048-0.937) and it was higher if the child had no siblings (OR = 7.831, 95% CI = 1.065-57.578). The risk of LRTI was higher if the child was not exclusively breastfed (OR = 24.612, 95% CI = 1.108-546.530) and the risk increased as the duration of exclusive breastfeeding decreased (OR = 0.396, 95% CI = 0.170-0.920). The risk of AOM increased as the birth body mass index (OR = 2.247, 95% CI = 1.011-4.992) and weight (OR = 1.607, 95% CI = 1.014-2.545) increased and if nasal aspirators were used (OR = 6.763, 95% CI = 1.022-44.753).

CONCLUSION

URTI were related with day care centres' risk factors, LRTI were associated with mother-related and household-related risk factors and AOM was connected with child-related risk factors.

Otologic and audiologic characteristics of type 2 diabetics in a tertiary health institution in Nigeria

Introduction

This cross-sectional comparative study was carried out at the Diabetes outpatient clinic of LAUTECH Teaching Hospital (LTH) Ogbomoso, Nigeria.

Objective

This study assessed patterns of otologic diseases and auditory acuity among type 2 diabetics and determinants of these findings among diabetics.

Methods

Ninety-seven consenting patients with clinical diagnosis of diabetes mellitus (194 ears) were matched for age and sex with ninety non-diabetic patients (180 ears). These patients were screened using otoscopy and pure tone audiometry over a 6-month period.

Results

The study reported a crude prevalence rate of 21.6% hearing loss in T2DM patients. The most common type of otologic disease that showed significant association with T2DM patients was otitis media with effusion (p = 0.027). T2DM was significantly associated with abnormal audiometric findings (p = 0.022), particularly sensorineural hearing loss (p = 0.022), of the moderate grade (p = 0.057). There were no differences of the audilogical findings for any particular ear, and no differential affectation of frequency range was observed. Coexisting hypertension and poor glycaemic control were significantly associated with aggravation of the hearing of the T2DM patients (p <  0.001, and p = 0.009 respectively).

Conclusion

T2DM had appreciable effects on hearing acuity. T2DM was significantly associated with the type and the degree of the hearing loss. The need for screening of hearing acuity of T2DM patients, in order to detect early changes, and promptly offer an adequate management and remedial measures was emphasized in this study.

A high-fat diet is associated with otitis media with effusion

OBJECTIVE

An association between obesity and otitis media with effusion (OME) has been previously reported. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between dietary intake and OME when adjusting obesity.

METHODS

We analyzed the differences in dietary intake between children with/without OME who were 4 through 13 years of age using data from a large population-based survey - the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey - from 2008 through 2012. Data from 4359 participants were analyzed using simple and multiple logistic regression analyses with complex sampling.

RESULTS

The BMI category, the proportion of total calorie intake, protein intake, water intake, and Na intake (intake/recommendation), and the distribution of carbohydrate intake were not associated with OME. The distribution of fat intake was associated with OME (each 10% increase of fat calories/total calories: unadjusted odds ratio [OR]=1.331, 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.016-1.744, P=0.038; age- and sex-adjusted OR=1.359, 95% CI=1.028-1.797, P=0.031; adjusted for age, sex and other factors OR=1.392, 95% CI=1.054-1.839, P=0.020). Based on BMI subgroup analysis, the distribution of fat intake was associated with OME in the healthy weight group (each 10% increase of fat calories/total calories: unadjusted OR=1.393, 95% CI=1.017-1.909, P=0.039; adjusted OR=1.470, 95% CI=1.051-2.055, P=0.024) but not in the obese group.

CONCLUSIONS

A high-fat diet was associated with OME and may represent a confounding factor between obesity and OME.

Relationship Between Otorhinolaryngologic Diseases and Obesity

Objectives

Obesity rates have been increasing for all population groups worldwide, leading to the increased development of various diseases. This study was designed is to identify the relationships between obesity and several important otorhinolaryngologic diseases, including chronic otitis media (COM), chronic rhinosinusitis, and chronic tonsillitis.

Methods

Mean body mass index (BMI) was compared in patients with COM, rhinosinusitis, and tonsillitis and in a control group. The relationships among the prevalence rates of overweight and obesity, morbidity period, and BMI were assessed in each group.

Results

Mean BMIs in the COM, rhinosinusitis, and tonsillitis groups were 24.45±2.72 kg/m², 24.68±3.25 kg/m², and 24.67±3.82 kg/m², respectively, with each significantly higher than in the control group (23.22±3.01 kg/m², P<0.05). The rates of obesity in the COM, rhinosinusitis, and tonsillitis groups were 37.5%, 42.9%, and 40.1%, respectively, each significantly higher than in the control group (24.3%, P<0.05). However, the rates of overweight did not differ significantly in the COM, rhinosinusitis, and tonsillitis compared with the control group (P>0.05 each).

Conclusion

Mean BMI and the prevalence of obesity were elevated in the three groups of patients with representative otorhinolaryngologic inflammatory diseases, including COM, chronic rhinosinusitis, and chronic tonsillitis.

Role of obesity in otitis media in children

The ongoing childhood obesity epidemic has garnered significant attention among healthcare providers due to its short- and long-term sequelae. Multiple diseases have been associated with obesity, not limited to hypertension, diabetes, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Over the past decade, the relationships between obesity and otologic conditions have been investigated. In this setting, otitis media has remained the focus of research, representing one of the most common pediatric illnesses. Initial studies suggesting a relationship between the two conditions have been supported with epidemiological studies controlling for socioeconomic factors. The purpose of this article is to review our current understanding of the relationship between otitis media and obesity and to discuss the healthcare implications of this association. In addition, several identifiable factors associated with each condition are discussed, as are potential pathophysiologic mechanisms that may help to elucidate the complex and multifactorial relationship between the two disease entities.

Decreased pattern-recognition receptor-mediated cytokine mRNA expression in obese children with otitis media with effusion

Objectives

To assess innate and humoral immune responses in middle ear effusion of obese pediatric patients with otitis media with effusion (OME).

Methods

We evaluated 219 children with OME, of whom 21 were obese and 198 were non-obese. We compared the expression in middle ear effusion of mRNAs encoding toll-like receptors (TLR) 2, 4, 5, and 9; nucleotide-binding oligomerization domains (NOD) 1 and 2; retinoic acid-inducible gene (RIG)-I; interleukins (IL)-6, -10, and -12; interferon (IFN)-γ; and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α mRNAs. We also compared the expression of immunoglobulins IgG, IgA, and IgM and the bacterial detection rate in the two groups.

Results

TLR2-mediated expression of IL-6 mRNA, TLR4-mediated expression of IL-6 and IL-10 mRNA, TLR5-mediated expression of IL-6, IL-10, and TNF-α mRNA, TLR9-mediated expression of IL-6 mRNA, and NOD2-mediated expression of IL-6, IL-12, and TNF-α mRNA were significantly lower in obese than in non-obese children (P<0.05). However, concentrations of IgG, IgA, and IgM in middle ear effusion were lower in obese than in non-obese children, but none of these differences was significant (P>0.05).

Conclusion

Mean body mass index was higher and pattern-recognition receptor-mediated cytokine mRNA expression was lower in obese than in non-obese children with OME.

Obesity and the risk of chronic rhinosinusitis, allergic rhinitis, and acute otitis media in school-age children

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS

To determine if obesity is a significant risk factor for acute otitis media (AOM), allergic rhinitis (AR), or chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) in children and to understand the potential otolaryngological implications of childhood obesity.

STUDY DESIGN

Cross-Sectional Analysis.

METHODS

The 2006 and 2008 the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey was utilized to identify school-aged children with AOM, AR, and/or CRS. Risk factors for the diagnoses extracted included standard demographics and the presence or absence of obesity. Multivariate analyses were conducted for associations between childhood obesity and AOM, AR, and CRS.

RESULTS

42.1 million (95% CI, 40.4-44.2) school-age children (unweighted N = 10623) were sampled in 2006 and 2008. There was a slight male predominance (51.0% [95% CI, 49.8-52.2]). Of these patients, 2.2 million (95% CI 1.9-2.4) received a diagnosis of AOM, 4.0 million (95% CI 3.6-4.4) received a diagnosis of AR, and 1.7 million (95% CI 1.4-1.9) received a diagnosis of CRS. Approximately 9.3 million (95% CI 8.7-10.0) children were obese, representing 22.2% (95% CI 21.0-23.3) of the U.S. population (age 6-17). Utilizing an adjusted multivariate model, childhood obesity was found to be associated with AOM (odds ratio, 1.44; [95% CI 1.08-1.93]; P = 0.033). Significant associations between obesity and AR (OR 1.14; [95% CI 0.88-1.47]; P = 0.60) or obesity and CRS (OR0.73; [95% CI 0.48-1.10]; P = 0.79) were not identified.

CONCLUSION

Childhood obesity appears to be associated with the development of AOM; however, an association between obesity and AR or CRS was not demonstrated. Given that in the United States nearly one-fourth of all children seeking health care are obese, these data may have important preventative care implications.

Associations between obesity and comorbid mental health, developmental, and physical health conditions in a nationally representative sample of US children aged 10 to 17

OBJECTIVE

This large population-based study of US children considered the association of obesity with a broad range of comorbidities. This study examined relationships between weight status and health for US children.

METHODS

We performed cross-sectional analysis of data on 43,297 children aged 10 to 17 from the 2007 National Survey of Children's Health. Weight status was calculated from parent report of child height and weight. Logistic regression models assessed associations between weight status and 21 indicators of general health, psychosocial functioning, and specific health disorders, adjusting for sociodemographic factors.

RESULTS

Using body mass index (BMI) percentiles for age and sex, 15% of US children were considered overweight (BMI 85th to <95th percentile), and 16% were obese (BMI ≥95th percentile). Compared with children classified as not overweight, obese children were more likely to have reported good/fair/poor health (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 2.18, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.76-2.69), activity restrictions (AOR 1.39, 95% CI 1.10-1.75), internalizing problems (AOR 1.59, 95% CI 1.04-2.45), externalizing problems (AOR 1.33, 95% CI 1.07-1.65), grade repetition (AOR 1.57, 95% CI 1.24-1.99), school problems, and missed school days. Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, conduct disorder, depression, learning disability, developmental delay, bone/joint/muscle problems, asthma, allergies, headaches, and ear infections were all more common in obese children.

CONCLUSIONS

Obese children have increased odds of worse reported general health, psychosocial functioning, and specific health disorders. Physicians, parents, and teachers should be informed of the specific comorbidities associated with childhood obesity to target interventions that could enhance well-being. Future research should examine additional comorbidities and seek to confirm associations using longitudinal data and clinical measures of height and weight.

The association between childhood overweight and obesity and otitis media

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this study was to examine the association between otitis media and childhood obesity in a population-based sample of elementary school children in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia.

METHODS

The study design is a prospective cohort study, linking data from a population-based survey of Grade 5 students (aged 10-11 years) in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia in 2003 with Nova Scotia administrative health data. Measured body mass index was used to define weight status based on the age- and gender-specific cut-off points of the International Obesity Task Force. Health administration data for each child was linked via Health Card numbers. The primary outcome was healthcare utilization (physician visits and costs) for suppurative otitis media (International Classification of Diseases [ICD]9: 382; ICD10: H65-66) with no previous diagnosis of otitis in the last 30 days.

RESULTS

Relative to normal weight children, obese children had more healthcare provider contacts for otitis media (adjusted incidence rate ratio 2.03, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.66-2.49), incurred more costs per otitis media-related visit ($47 vs. $24, P  = 0.0001) and had higher odds to have repeated otitis media (adjusted odds ratio 2.27, 95% CI 1.54-3.35). Socioeconomic factors, a history of breastfeeding, presence of an allergic disorder or chronic adenoid/tonsil disorder did not change the association between obesity and otitis media.

CONCLUSION

There is a clear association between childhood obesity and otitis media that cannot be explained by confounding by socioeconomic factors or clinically associated disorders.

Health care utilization from prevalent medical conditions in normal-weight, overweight, and obese children

OBJECTIVE

To explore the commonly recorded diagnoses in overweight and obese children presenting to a clinical care setting compared with their normal-weight peers.

STUDY DESIGN

This was a cross-sectional study linking data from 3361 fifth grade students from the 2003 Children's Lifestyle and School Performance Study with Nova Scotia administrative health data over 6 years.

RESULTS

Overweight and obese children were more likely to have had a diagnosis of internalizing disorders, asthma, other respiratory disorders, obesity, otitis media, and chronic adenoid/tonsil disorder. Conversely, normal-weight children were more likely to have a diagnosis of conduct disorder or other mental diseases. Except for internalizing disorders, overweight and obese children also had significantly higher health care costs for these conditions.

CONCLUSION

Overweight and obese children had higher health care utilization across a range of diagnoses, further confirming that health care utilization patterns of overweight and obese children differ from those of their normal-weight peers. Greater attention to the relationship between more common childhood conditions and overweight and obesity is needed, given the greater prevalence in overweight and obese children and the fact that some of the more established obesity-related conditions occur less frequently, particularly in younger children.
