Abstract
Sustainable aqua feeds have become an urgent necessity for future-oriented aquaculture sector development, and especially mineral supply could be limited when diets are being prepared with low amounts of animal-based sources. Since knowledge about the efficiency of organic trace mineral supplementation in different species of fish is limited, the effects of chromium DL-methionine in African catfish nutrition were evaluated. Four commercially based diets with increasing chromium DL-methionine supplementation (0, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6 mg Cr kg-1) in the form of Availa-Cr 1000 were fed to African catfish (Clarias gariepinus B., 1822) in quadruplicate groups for 84 days. Growth performance parameters (final body weight, feed conversion ratio, specific growth rate, daily feed intake, protein efficiency ratio, and protein retention efficiency), biometric indices (mortality, hepatosomatic index, spleen somatic index, and hematocrit), and mineral retention efficiency were assessed at the end of the feeding trial. The specific growth rate was significantly increased in fish-fed diets with 0.2 mg Cr kg-1 and 0.4 mg Cr kg-1 supplementation in comparison with control and based on the second-degree polynomial regression analysis; supplementation with 0.33 mg Cr kg-1 was optimal in commercially based diets for African catfish. Chromium retention efficiency was reduced with increasing supplementation levels; however, the chromium content of the whole body was comparable to literature. The results suggest that organic chromium supplementation is a viable and safe supplement for diets to increase the growth performance of African catfish.

Abstract
While chromium (Cr) has been recognized as an essential nutrient for all animals, and dietary supplementation can be beneficial, it can also be toxic. The present study aimed to investigate the contrasting effects of dietary chromium in Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei. Five experimental diets were formulated to contain Cr at levels of 0.82 (Cr0.82, unsupplemented diet), 1.01 (Cr1.01), 1.22 (Cu1.22), 1.43 (Cr1.43) and 1.63 (Cr1.63) mg/kg and were fed to shrimp for 8 weeks. Highest weight gain was recorded in shrimp fed the diet containing 1.22 mg/kg Cr. Shrimp fed the diet containing the highest level of Cr (1.63 mg/kg) showed the lowest weight gain and clear signs of oxidative stress and apoptosis as evidenced by higher levels of H2O2, malondialdehyde and 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine, and expression of caspase 2, 3, 5, and lower contents of total and oxidized glutathione, and expression of Cu/Zn sod, cat, gpx, mt, bcl2. Chromium supplementation promoted glycolysis and inhibited gluconeogenesis as shown by increased activities of hexokinase, phosphofructokinase and pyruvate kinase, and reduced activity of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase in shrimp fed the diet containing 1.43 mg/kg Cr. Shrimp fed the diet with 1.63 mg/kg Cr had lowest contents of crustacean hyperglycemic hormone and insulin like peptide in hemolymph. Expression of genes involved in insulin signaling pathway and glycose metabolism including insr, irs1, pik3ca, pdpk1, akt, acc1, gys, glut1, pk, hk were up-regulated, and foxO1, gsk-3β, g6pc, pepck were down-regulated in shrimp fed the diets supplemented with Cr. This study demonstrated that optimum dietary supplementation of Cr had beneficial effects on glucose homeostasis and growth, whereas excess caused oxidative damage and impaired growth. The results contribute to our understanding of the biological functions of chromium in shrimp.

Abstract
Diet quality greatly affects an animal’s performance and metabolism. Despite the fact that trivalent chromium [Cr(III)] is considered an essential element and is widely used in nutritional supplements for animals and humans, the potential toxicity of Cr(III) is unclear. Here, liver transcriptome sequencing was performed on coral trout (Plectropomus leopardus) exposed to 200 mg kg–1 of dietary organic Cr(III) [as chromium picolinate (CrPic)] for 8 weeks. One-hundred-and thirteen differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in response to Cr(III) stress, in comparison to the control, including 31 up-regulated and 82 down-regulated DEGs. Clusters of Orthologous Groups of proteins (COG) classifies DEGs into 15 functional categories, with the predominant category being related to lipid transport and metabolism (9.73%). The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) assigned DEGs to six major categories with robust DEGs as part of the lipid metabolism pathway (18.58%). Moreover, KEGG functional enrichment analysis showed that these DEGs are primarily related to steroid biosynthesis, terpenoid backbone biosynthesis, and steroid hormone biosynthesis pathways, of which steroid biosynthesis was the most significant pathway, and 12 key up-regulated DEGs (dhcr7, dhcr24, ebp, lss, msmo1, sqle, cyp51, tm7sf2, sc5dl, fdft1, nsdhl, and hsd17b7) were found for steroid biosynthesis pathways. To validate the RNA sequencing data using quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), qRT-PCR results indicate that the expression of genes encoding HMGCR, TM7SF2, TRYP2, CTRL, EBP, LSS, and CYP51 were induced, while those encoding THRSP, LCE, and MCM5 were reduced, consistent with RNA-seq results. This findings provides the first evidence that a long-term high dose of Cr(III) intake causes lipid metabolism disorder and potential toxicity in fish. Cautious health risk assessment of dietary Cr(III) intake is therefore highly recommended for the commercial and/or natural diets of aquatic animals, which has previously largely been ignored.

Abstract
In aquaculture industry, the aim of feed formulation is to provide the fish with feasible diet to enhance their body. Carbohydrates supplemented with chromium compounds (organic and in-organic) are major energy currencies for biological machinery of fish. Here, this article presents a description that emphasizes the effect of chromium picolinate (organic) and chromium chloride hexahydrate (in-organic) on growth execution and genotoxicity of Labeorohita. Seven groups (each with a replica) with 30 Labeorohita fingerlings were formed: a control group, three groups were supplemented with chromium chloride Hexahydrate (0.3, 0.5 and 0.6 mg kg−1) and three groups were supplemented with Cr-Pic, 0.3, 0.5 and 0.6 mg kg−1) respectively. The experimental group T4 fortified with (Cr-Pic) along with carbohydrates by dose of 0.3 mg/kg demonstrated significant results (P < 0.05). Superior growth for Labeo rohita was observed as compared to control and other experimental groups. Minimum growth trend was observed in group T5 (CP-0.5 mg/kg), T6 (CP-0.6 mg/kg) and T7 (control) respectively. Comet assay results indicated the dose and Cr related (organic or in-organic) genetic damage in fish erythrocytes. Hence, maximum comet parameters (Tail length, Tail DNA and Olive Tail Moment) were observed in (in-organic Cr) by 0.3 mg/kg concentration. This study suggested the toxicity corresponding to in-organic Cr but organic Cr could be used as growth promoter if so. Overall results demonstrated supplementation of organic chromium compounds by 0.3 mg/kg should be reconsidered for growth. This drive of research address the fish farmers to utilize the feed supplemented with organic Cr compounds which is most appropriate to provide sustainable yield as part of increment in growth performance and beneficial health effects for consumers on indices to reduce the toxicity risks.

Abstract
An 11-week feeding trial was carried out to investigate the effects of supplemented chromium picolinate (Cr-Pic) on the growth, whole-body composition, and relative mRNA expression related to lipogenesis and glucose metabolism in juvenile blunt snout bream. Seven isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets with graded Cr supplementation levels were fed to triplicate groups. The final weight (FW), feed conversion ratio (FCR), and specific growth rate (SGR) were improved with increasing dietary Cr supplementation levels up to 0.4 mg/kg, and thereafter showed relatively constant. However, 12.0 mg/kg dietary Cr supplementation decreased growth and feed utilization. Based on SGR and FCR, the optimal dietary Cr supplementation level for the juvenile was estimated to be 0.28 mg/kg. Significantly higher plasma insulin levels were found in juvenile fed diets with 0.4 and 0.8 mg/kg Cr supplementation compared to those fed diet sans supplemented Cr. Plasma glucose levels decreased with increasing dietary Cr supplementation, and the lowest value was remarked in the group added 3.2 mg/kg of Cr. Adding 0.4-0.8 mg/kg Cr enhanced insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS-1), phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K), and pyruvate kinase (PK) and inhibited expression of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK), glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase), and glycogen synthase (GS) mRNA levels. High dietary Cr (12.0 mg/kg) supplementation resulted in high G6Pase and PEPCK expression. The highest content of whole-body lipid was remarked in fish fed with 0.4 mg/kg dietary Cr, which related to the enhanced gene expression related to lipogenesis; thereafter, mRNA levels showed a diminishing trend. These findings indicate that optimum dietary Cr-Pic supplementation has a positive effect on growth and blood glucose homeostasis by modifying the mRNA levels related to glucose metabolism and lipogenesis in juvenile blunt snout bream.

Abstract
A 63-day feeding trial was carried out to investigate the effect of three levels of Cr yeast (0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mg Cr/kg) on the utilization of diets containing 38.5 % of maize starch or dextrin in common carp, Cyprinus carpio L. (initial mean body mass 14 ± 0.3 g) in an auto circulator system at 25 ± 0.5 °C. A two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that the final body mass (FBM), percentage mass gain (%MG), specific growth rate (SGR) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were significantly (P < 0.05) affected by the two sources of variation (carbohydrate source and Cr level). In general, fish fed on a diet containing starch and fortified with 0.5 mg Cr/kg performed significantly higher FBM (47.23 g), %MG (225.11), SGR (1.91) and lower value of FCR (1.24) compared to fish fed on the other diets. Carp fed on 2.0 mg Cr/kg with maize starch and 1.0 mg Cr/kg with dextrin-based diet showed a significant reduction (P < 0.05) in whole body lipid content as confirmed by a two-way ANOVA. Fish fed on a maize starch-based diet supplemented with 0.5 and 1.0 mg Cr/kg recorded the highest activities for hexokinase enzyme. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity was neither affected by Cr concentration nor by dietary carbohydrate source. Fish fed on dextrin-based diets accumulated higher Cr in the whole tissue compared to fish fed on starch-based diets. Normal histological structures in the liver and gut tissues were observed in all groups. The present data clearly showed that dietary Cr yeast was safe in the fish diet at the levels tested.
