Abstract
Listeria monocytogenes, the causative agent of listeriosis, has been implicated in increasing foodborne outbreaks worldwide. The disease is manifested in various forms ranging from severe sepsis in immune-compromised individuals, febrile gastroenteritis, still birth, abortions and meningoencephalitis. In India, data from studies on the detection and molecular epidemiological analysis of L. monocytogenes are only recently emerging. The presence of Listeria in different ecological niches has been recorded from India, including foods, soil, vegetables, mangrove swamps, seafood, freshwater fishes, clinical cases, and also insects. The organism has also been isolated from women with spontaneous abortions, miscarriage or recurrent obstetric history, aborted foetuses, animal clinical cases and wildlife samples. A novel species of Listeria has also been characterized. Listeria monocytogenes strains isolated from clinical, environmental, and foods showed biofilm-forming abilities. Listeria monocytogenes serotype 4b isolates of ST328, a predominant and unique ST observed in India, was repeatedly isolated from different sources, times, and geographical locations. Here, we reviewed the occurrence of Listeria in different sources in India, its resistance to biocides, and provide epidemiological analysis on its genomic landscape.

Abstract
Impact of varying concentrations and counts of toxic metals and indigenous bacteria on antioxidative defense system in edible oyster, Saccostrea cucullata, collected from four tropical estuarine systems of Goa (west coast of India), are presented in this study. Relatively high abundance of bacteria was estimated from the oysters especially during monsoon season (June-September). Density of total and fecal coliforms were about 24 times higher in the organism than the surrounding water (average TC: 4360 and FC: 3475 MPN 100 ml-1). Sedimentary Cd, Pb, and Hg concentrations varied from 0.12 to 0.48, 19.28-102.48, and 0.03-0.13 mg kg-1 (dry wt.) while, bioaccumulation of Cd, Pb, and Hg in the oysters ranged from 5.17 to 10.6, 0.18-7.99, and 0.06-0.22 mg kg-1 (dry wt.) respectively. Higher degree of pollution and moderate ecotoxicological risks with increasing toxicity (36-37%) was observed in two of the tropical estuaries. Biomarker response in the oysters was somewhat inconsistent with pollution load in the estuarine systems. Elevated environmental stress was observed during pre-monsoon (March-May) followed by the monsoon period. Sedimentary metals were identified as predominant inducers of antioxidative defence system in oysters from the study areas. This study suggests that, biomarker can be useful in assessing the combined effects of metal and bacterial contaminations on native oysters and in evaluating environmental quality in tropical estuarine systems.

Abstract
This study determined the anti-listerial activity of indigenous probiotics from traditional fermented foods of Western Himalaya against meat borne Listera monocytogens isolates from Himachal Pradesh. One hundred samples of meat and meat products like chicken (n = 25), chevon (goat meat, n = 20), fish (n = 20) and pork (n = 30) were collected and were analyzed for the presence of Listeria spp. by recommended culture and biochemical methods. L. monocytogens isolates were confirmed by PCR targeting the virulence gene hlyA (haemolysin A) and by16S rRNA sequencing. Anti-listerial activity of probiotic bacteria isolated from indigenous fermented foods of Himachal Pradesh was determined by well diffusion method using Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (ATCC 53103) as the reference strain. Five percent of tested samples were found positive for L. monocytogens with incidence of 8.0% in chicken (2/25), 10.0% in fish (2/20) and 4.0% in chevon meat (1/25). None of the tested pork samples were found contaminated with L. monocytogenes. Among 11 indigenous probiotics used in this study, highest antagonistic activity was exhibited by Lactobacillus plantarum (ADF 10) and Enterococcus faecium (ADF1) which was equivalent to the reference strain.

Abstract
Infectious human diseases acquired from bivalve shellfish consumption constitute a public health threat. These health threats are largely related to the filter-feeding phenomenon, by which bivalve organisms retain and concentrate pathogenic bacteria from their surrounding waters. Even after depuration, bivalve shellfish are still involved in outbreaks caused by pathogenic bacteria, which increases the demand for new and efficient strategies to control transmission of shellfish infection. Bacteriophage (or phage) therapy represents a promising, tailor-made approach to control human pathogens in bivalves, but its success depends on a deep understanding of several factors that include the bacterial communities present in the harvesting waters, the appropriate selection of phage particles, the multiplicity of infection that produces the best bacterial inactivation, chemical and physical factors, the emergence of phage-resistant bacterial mutants and the life cycle of bivalves. This review discusses the need to advance phage therapy research for bivalve decontamination, highlighting their efficiency as an antimicrobial strategy and identifying critical aspects to successfully apply this therapy to control human pathogens associated with bivalve consumption.

Abstract
A combination of phenotype microarrays, targeted stress resistance and virulence assays and comparative genome analysis was used to compare a set of Listeria monocytogenes strains including those involved in previous Swiss foodborne listeriosis outbreaks. Despite being highly syntenic in gene content these strains showed significant phenotypic variation in utilization of different carbon (C)-sources as well as in resistance of osmotic and pH stress conditions that are relevant to host and food associated environments. An outbreak strain from the 2005 Swiss Tomme cheese listeriosis outbreak (Lm3163) showed the highest versatility in C-sources utilized whereas the strain responsible for the 1983 to 1987 Vacherin Montd'or cheese listeriosis outbreak (LL195) showed the highest tolerance to both osmotic and pH stress conditions among the examined strains. Inclusion of L-norvaline led to enhanced resistance of acidic stress in all the examined strains and there were strain-strain-specific differences observed in the ability of other amino acids and urea to enhance acid stress resistance in L. monocytogenes. A strain dependent inhibition pattern was also observed upon inclusion of β-phenylethylamine under alkaline stress conditions. In targeted phenotypic analysis the strain-specific differences in salt stress tolerance uncovered in phenotypic microarrays were corroborated and variations in host cell invasion and virulence among the examined strains were also revealed. Outbreak associated strains representing lineage I serotype 4b showed superior pathogenicity in a zebrafish infection model whilst Lm3163 a lineage II serotype 1/2a outbreak strain demonstrated the highest cellular invasion capacity amongst the tested strains. A genome wide sequence comparison of the strains only revealed few genetic differences between the strains suggesting that variations in gene regulation and expression are largely responsible for the phenotypic differences revealed among the examined strains. Our results have generated data that provides a potential basis for the future design of improved Listeria specific media to enhance routine detection and isolation of this pathogen as well as provide knowledge for developing novel methods for its control in food.

Abstract
Listeria monocytogenes was screened from different seafood contact surfaces in five sampling sites of fishing harbour, fish landing centers, seafood processing plants, fish market, and fish curing yards of Tuticorin Coast of India. 115 swab samples were collected and tested for the occurrence of L. monocytogenes by conventional and molecular methods. Overall, 5.22% of swab samples collected were positive for L. monocytogenes. The fishing harbour had high incidence (10.3%) of L. monocytogenes followed by fish landing centers (5.9%), and seafood processing plants (4.1%). Boat deck, fish transport tricycle were the two seafood contact surfaces in fishing harbour, which had the occurrence of L. monocytogenes. The swab samples from fish market and fish curing yards were negative for L. monocytogenes. All the isolated colonies of L. monocytogenes were confirmed by PCR assay targeting virulent hlyA gene. The DNA of all the isolates yielded a product of 174 bp on PCR amplification in comparison with L. monocytogenes Type culture (MTCC 1143). The results clearly indicated the occurrence of L. monocytogenes in seafood contact surfaces along the Tuticorin Coast of India.

Abstract
Listeriosis is an infectious and fatal disease of animals, birds, fish, crustaceans and humans. It is an important food-borne zoonosis caused by Listeria monocytogenes, an intracellular pathogen with unique potential to spread from cell to cell, thereby crossing blood-brain, intestinal and placental barriers. The organism possesses a pile of virulence factors that help to infect the host and evade from host immune machinery. Though disease occurrence is sporadic throughout the world, it can result in severe damage during an outbreak. Listeriosis is characterized by septicaemia, encephalitis, meningitis, meningoencephalitis, abortion, stillbirth, perinatal infections and gastroenteritis with the incubation period varying with the form of infection. L. monocytogenes has been isolated worldwide from humans, animals, poultry, environmental sources like soil, river, decaying plants, and food sources like milk, meat and their products, seafood and vegetables. Since appropriate vaccines are not available and infection is mainly transmitted through foods in humans and animals, hygienic practices can prevent its spread. The present review describes etiology, epidemiology, transmission, clinical signs, post-mortem lesions, pathogenesis, public health significance, and advances in diagnosis, vaccines and treatment of this disease. Special attention has been given to novel as well as prospective emerging therapies that include bacteriophage and cytokine therapy, avian egg yolk antibodies and herbal therapy. Various vaccines, including advances in recombinant and DNA vaccines and their modes of eliciting immune response, are also discussed. Due focus has also been given regarding appropriate prevention and control strategies to be adapted for better management of this zoonotic disease.
