Abstract
Physiological changes during pregnancy make the individuals more susceptible to severe respiratory diseases. Hence, pregnant women with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are likely at a higher risk. We investigated the effects of COVID-19 on T cell response and serum cytokine profile in pregnant patients. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of women with COVID-19 were collected during the first trimester of pregnancy, and the percentage of total lymphocytes, as well as CD4 + and CD8 + T cells, was assessed using flow cytometry. The expression of the programmed death-1 (PD-1) marker for exhausted T cells was evaluated. Additionally, the serum samples were provided to evaluate the levels of antiviral and proinflammatory cytokines, as well as laboratory serological tests. Pregnant women with COVID-19 presented lymphopenia with diminished CD4 + and CD8 + T cells. Besides, high expression levels of the PD-1 gene and protein were observed on PBMCs and T cells, respectively, when compared with normal pregnant individuals. Moreover, serum levels of TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, and IL-2 receptor were notably enhanced, while IFN-I α/β values were significantly decreased in the patients when compared with controls. Furthermore, hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia, and hypertension were directly correlated with the disease although serum albumin and vitamin D3 levels adversely affected the viral infection. Our study showed extreme lymphopenia and poor T cell response while elevated values of serum inflammatory cytokines in infected pregnant women. Moreover, a hypertension background or metabolic changes, including hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia, and vitamin D3 or albumin deficiency, might be promising prognostic factors in pregnant women with COVID-19.

Abstract
Early recognition of high-risk pregnancies through biochemical markers may promote antenatal surveillance, resulting in improved pregnancy outcomes. The goal of this study is to evaluate the possibilities of using biochemical markers during the first trimester of pregnancy in the prediction of hypertensive pregnancy disorders (HPD) and the delivery of small-for-gestational-age (SGA) neonates. A comprehensive search was conducted on key databases, including PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, for articles relating to the use of biochemical markers in the prediction of HPD and SGA. The findings show that changes in the levels of biomarkers in the early pregnancy phases could be an important indicator of adverse pregnancy outcomes. The literature shows that low PAPP-A (pregnancy-associated plasma protein A) and PlGF (placental growth factor) levels, low alkaline phosphatase (AP), higher sFlt-1 (soluble fms-like Tyrosine Kinase-1) levels, higher AFP (alfa fetoprotein) levels, and elevated levels of inflammatory markers such as β-HGC (free beta human chorionic gonadotropin), interferon-gamma (INF-γ), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) may be associated with risks including the onset of HPD, fetal growth restriction (FGR), and delivery of SGA neonates. Comparatively, PAPP-A and PlGF appear to be the most important biochemical markers for the prediction of SGA and HPD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is well known that pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) contributes significantly to the mortality rates of both mothers and babies during pregnancy. The relationship between fatty acids (FAs) and PIH remains debatable, with the causality between the two yet to be definitively established. METHODS Two-sample univariable and multivariable Mendelian Randomization (MR) analyses were executed, based on pooled data from Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS), to investigate any causal impact of FAs on PIH. A suite of methods was employed to assess causality, including inverse variance weighting (IVW), weighted median, MR Egger, simple mode, and weighted mode. Subsequently, the data underwent a sensitivity analysis (using Leave-One-Out analysis), a heterogeneity test (with MR-PRESSO and Cochran's Q test), as well as a multiple validity test (using MR-Egger regression). In multivariable analyses, fatty acids were first grouped to observe the effect of individual FAs on PIH. Subsequently, factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and body mass index (BMI) were incorporated into a multivariable examination of the impact of each FA on PIH. During this process, the IVW, weighted median, MR-Lasso, and MR-Egger methods were employed. RESULTS A systematic investigation was conducted into the causal impact of each FA on PIH. The findings indicated that Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFA), Omega3, the ratio of Omega6 to Omega3, and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) have a causal relationship with PIH. Increases in PUFA, Omega3, and DHA could potentially reduce the risk of PIH, while an increase in the Omega6/Omega3 ratio could heighten the risk. The impacts of other FAs (including Total Fatty Acids, Monounsaturated Fatty Acids (MUFA), Saturated Fatty Acids (SFA), and Omega 6) on PIH were not substantiated by the MR analysis. In the univariate leave-one-out analysis, rs174564 was identified in PUFA, Omega3, and DHA as having a significant role. The tests with MR-Egger and MR-PRESSO found that the results were not influenced by pleiotropy and heterogeneity. After adjusting for BMI, Diabetes Mellitus, and pre-existing hypertension in the multivariable analysis, the results mirrored those obtained univariable. CONCLUSION The research implies that elevated levels of circulating PUFA, DHA, and Omega3 may serve as a protective mechanism against PIH, while higher Omega6/Omega3 ratios could potentially increase the risk of PIH. These findings may inform clinical strategies for PIH prevention.

Abstract
Interferon-induced transmembrane proteins (IFITMs) are restriction factors that block many viruses from entering cells. High levels of type I interferon (IFN) are associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, and IFITMs have been shown to impair the formation of syncytiotrophoblast. Here, we examine whether IFITMs affect another critical step of placental development, extravillous cytotrophoblast (EVCT) invasion. We conducted experiments using in vitro/ex vivo models of EVCT, mice treated in vivo with the IFN-inducer poly (I:C), and human pathological placental sections. Cells treated with IFN-β demonstrated upregulation of IFITMs and reduced invasive abilities. Transduction experiments confirmed that IFITM1 contributed to the decreased cell invasion. Similarly, migration of trophoblast giant cells, the mouse equivalent of human EVCTs, was significantly reduced in poly (I:C)-treated mice. Finally, analysis of CMV- and bacterial-infected human placentas revealed upregulated IFITM1 expression. These data demonstrate that high levels of IFITM1 impair trophoblast invasion and could explain the placental dysfunctions associated with IFN-mediated disorders.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation and predictive value of serum miR-146b-5p expression during the first trimester of pregnancy with pre-eclampsia (PE). In total, 32 normal pregnant women (the control group) and 58 subjects with PE were randomly selected from eligible case data. The serum levels of miR-146b-5p, pregnancy associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A) and free beta subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin (free β-hCG) were then detected. Next, we established predictive models of single or multiple markers for PE. The levels of miR-146b-5p in the mild pre-eclampsia (mPE) and severe pre-eclampsia (sPE) groups were higher than the control group and there were significant differences between the three groups (F = 3.424, P = 0.037). The statistical results of the model before and after 200 times 10-fold cross-validation were as follows: miR-146b-5p (AUC = 0.723 vs AUC = 0.710); miR-146b-5p + BMI + MAP + free β-hCG MoM + PAPP-A MoM (AUC = 0.929 vs AUC = 0.851). We found that expression levels of miR-146b-5p in the first trimester were significantly higher in the serum of pregnant women with PE than in the normal pregnancy group. A prediction model in combination with miR-146b-5p and other markers improved the early predictive value for PE.IMPACT STATEMENTWhat is already known on this subject? Pre-eclampsia is a complex systemic disease with hypertension as the main clinical manifestation and causes extensive damage to the body. Some existing maternal biochemical markers have limited value in predicting PE, and new biomarkers with high sensitivity and specificity are urgently needed in clinical practice. There are a variety of abnormal expression miRNAs in PE, however, the relationship between miR-146b-5p and PE has yet to be fully elucidated.What do the results of this study add? We first found that expression levels of serum miR-146b-5p in the first trimester were significantly higher in PE than in a normal pregnancy group. A prediction model a combination of miR-146b-5p and other maternal characteristics and biochemical markers can improve the early predictive value for PE.What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? PE progresses rapidly and has become a severe target organ complication when discovered. Therefore, the early prediction of a high risk of PE, along with early intervention and prevention measures, are of great significance. Compared to maternal biochemical markers, combination of miR-146b-5p and maternal characteristics and biochemical markers can improve the early predictive value for PE.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia (PE) has adverse effects on pregnant women, fetuses, and newborns [1], and accounts for 3%–10% of pregnancy-related diseases globally. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to screen a series of prenatal markers (pregnancy-associated plasma protein [PAPP-A], β-human chorionic gonadotropin [β-hCG], alpha fetoprotein [AFP], and estriol [uE3]) to establish a risk model and evaluate the diagnostic values of the markers for predicting PE. METHODS: Sixty-five pregnant women were enrolled in this study. They were divided into two groups containing healthy pregnant women (n= 51, the non-PE group) and pregnant women with PE (n= 14, the PE group). According to the stage of pregnancy, the pregnant women in each group were divided into early, middle, and late pregnancy groups for statistical analysis. The levels of PAPPA-A β-hCG, AFP, and uE3 were compared among these groups. Then, a risk model was established, and PE was diagnosed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve results. RESULTS: In the early pregnancy group, the differences in the levels of PAPP-A, AFP, and uE3 between the PE and non-PE groups were statistically significant (P< 0.001, P= 0.029, and P= 0.033, respectively), while the difference in the single remaining marker was not statistically significant. A ROC curve analysis revealed that in early pregnancy, the sensitivity and specificity of PAPP-A were 76.5% and 71.4%, respectively, and the sensitivity and specificity of β-hCG were 82.4% and 57.1%, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of the combination of the two markers for diagnosing PE were 86.3% and 57.1%, respectively. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that the combination of PAPP-A and β-hCG has diagnostic value for PE in pregnant women. Accordingly, we should formulate innovative PE screening strategies to target the prevention of PE and create important conditions for predictive and preventive personalized medical treatments.

Abstract
Pre-eclampsia is one of the most common pregnancy complications, and a major cause of fetal and maternal morbidity and mortality globally. Diagnosis currently takes place in the third trimester based on clinical symptoms. This systematic review and meta-analysis sought to determine the blood biomarkers that are associated with pre-eclampsia, and in particular, the biomarkers that could predict pre-eclampsia in early pregnancy. We searched the electronic databases (Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library) from inception up to March 2022. Prospective studies with 1000 or more participants that measured blood biomarkers to predict or diagnose pre-eclampsia have been included in this systematic review. Biomarkers' measurements were considered from the first up to the third trimester, but not during labor. Data concerning pre-eclampsia, biomarker measurements and study characteristics were extracted. Meta-analysis was performed when possible. We found a total of 43 studies (assessing 62 different biomarkers in 18,170 pregnancies, have been included in this systematic review, and a total of 6 studies (assessing 2 biomarkers have been included in the meta-analysis). Statistical analysis was performed for PlGF and sFlt-1. Mean difference in PlGF levels between pre-eclampsia and healthy pregnancies, appear to increase as the pregnancy progresses. Results of sFlt-1 meta-analysis were inconclusive. No significant publication bias was identified. This is the most comprehensive and up to date systematic review and meta-analysis on this important topic on blood biomarkers for the early prediction of pre-eclampsia. Further This research highlights the urgent needed for further discovery research to identify blood biomarkers that could predict the development of pre-eclampsia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Health disparities in children of immigrants are prevalent from birth and are hypothesized to - in part - emerge as a biological consequence of migration's unfavorable social and psychological sequelae. The aim of this study was to examine whether maternal migrant background is associated with inflammation during pregnancy - a key pathway by which maternal states and conditions during pregnancy may influence fetal development and subsequent pregnancy, birth, and child developmental and health outcomes. MATERIAL AND METHODS Data was available from 126 pregnant women who participated in a population based multi-site prospective birth cohort study in Bielefeld and Berlin, Germany. The study included two study visits in mid- and late pregnancy. At each visit, a composite maternal pro-inflammatory score was derived from circulating levels of plasma inflammatory markers (IL-6, CRP). Migrant background was defined by country of origin of participants and their parents' (Turkey or other) and generation status (1st or 2nd generation). We applied hierarchical linear models (HLM) in order to quantify the relationship between different migrant background variables and inflammation during pregnancy after adjustment for potential confounders (including socioeconomic status). RESULTS Migrant background was significantly associated with inflammation during pregnancy. When compared to women without migrant background, levels of inflammation were increased in 1) pregnant women with migrant background in general (B = 0.35, SE = 0.12, p < .01); 2) 1st (B = 0.28, SE = 0.15, p < .10) and 2nd generation (B = 0.40, SE = 0.15, p < .01); 3) women with a Turkish migrant background (B = 0.28, SE = 0.14, p < .10) and women with another migrant background (B = 0.42, SE = 0.15, p < .01); and 4) 2nd generation Turkish origin women (B = 0.38, SE = 0.20, p < .10), 1st generation women with other migrant background (B = 0.44, SE = 0.26, p < .10), and 2nd generation women with other migrant background (B = 0.43, SE = 0.17, p < .05). DISCUSSION Our findings support a role for maternal inflammation as a pathway of intergenerational transmission of migration-related health inequalities, suggest that the effect seems to persist in 2nd generation immigrants, and highlight the need for future research and targeted interventions in this context.

Abstract
Preeclampsia (PE) is a common disease among pregnant women and is characterized by high blood pressure, edemas, proteinuria, etc. However, the underlying mechanism of PE is still not clear. Our results may provide a new understanding of the pathogenesis of PE and a therapeutical target for the treatment of the disease. Levels of long intergenic ncRNA 00473 (LINC00473), miR-16-5p, MMP2, MMP9, Bcl-2, Bax, and C caspase-3 in placental tissues or human trophoblastic cells were assessed. HTR8/SVneo and JEG-3 cells were transfected with LINC00473, miR-16-5p mimic, LINC00473 siRNA, or miR-16-5p inhibitor alone, or co-transfected with LINC00473 and miR-16-5p mimic or LINC00473 siRNA and miR-16-5p inhibitor. Viability, apoptosis, migration and invasion of cells were assessed by Cell Counting Kit-8, flow cytometry, wound healing assay and Transwell assay, respectively. The target gene of LINC00473 was analyzed using Starbase and dual-luciferase reporter assay. LINC00473 level was down-regulated in placental tissues of PE patients. LINC00473 overexpression increased cell viability, migration, invasion, and MMP2, MMP9 and Bcl-2 levels, yet decreased the apoptosis rates and Bax and C caspase-3 levels in cells; however, LINC00473 silencing had the opposite effect. LINC00473 targeted miR-16-5p and miR-16-5p level was negatively related to LINC00473 level. MiR-16-5p mimic reversed the promoting effect of LINC00473 overexpression on the invasion of HTR8/SVneo and JEG-3 cells, while miR-16-5p inhibitor reversed the inhibitory effect of LINC00473 silencing on the invasion of these cells. In conclusion, LINC00473 improved the invasion of human trophoblastic cells via miR-16-5p.

Abstract
Background Because there are no published biochemical reference intervals (RI) for pregnant Taiwanese women, we used an established islandwide birth cohort, the Taiwan Maternal and Infant Cohort Study, to establish RIs for important biochemical parameters in women during their 3rd trimester in Taiwan. Additionally, we compared the differences in these biochemical parameters between early third trimester (weeks 28 to 31) and late third trimester (weeks 37 to 40) of pregnant women as well as the differences in them between the third trimester and after delivery. Methods Between 2012 and 2015, we recruited a total of 2,136 pregnant women from nine hospitals located in northern (n = 3), central (n = 3), southern (n = 2), and eastern Taiwan (n = 1) to receive regular prenatal health examinations during their third trimester (weeks 28 to 40). After exclusion, samples obtained from 993 eligible pregnant women were analyzed. Results There were increases in both lower and upper normal limits for blood neutrophil, thyroid profile (triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4)), testosterone, estradiol, and progesterone and decreases for RBC, hemoglobin (Hb), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and creatinine (Cr) during their third trimesters. Women in their late third trimester (n = 378) had higher median RBC, Hb, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), Cr, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), testosterone, estradiol, and progesterone and lower median platelet and insulin, compared with those in their early third trimester (n = 490). Twenty-three of the women had both third trimester and post-pregnancy data. After delivery, the women had lower median AST, ALT, insulin, T3, T4, testosterone, estradiol, and progesterone and higher median Cr, free T4, FSH, and luteinizing hormone (LH), compared to their third trimesters. Conclusions Gestation-related changes in important biochemical parameters should be considered when evaluating clinical laboratory values in pregnant women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association of socioeconomic status (SES) with health and disease risk is well established. Low-grade inflammation represents a key pathway believed to underlie this association. Previous research has suggested that subjective social standing (SSS) is more consistently associated with health outcomes than objective measures of SES such as income and education. Given the importance of maternal inflammatory state in a wide array of pregnancy, birth and fetal/child developmental and health outcomes, we examine here the independent association of maternal SSS relative to objective SES with pro-inflammatory state during pregnancy. METHODS We conducted a longitudinal study of an ethnically diverse sample of 250 pregnant women with 3 study visits in early, mid and late gestation. We obtained objective measures of SES (income, education), and SSS with reference to the community and to the nation using the MacArthur Scale of Subjective Social Status. At each study visit, a composite maternal pro-inflammatory score was derived from circulating levels of inflammatory markers (IL-6, CRP, TNF-α). RESULTS In hierarchical linear models, SSS but not objective SES was significantly and negatively associated with maternal inflammatory state. Moreover, the relationship between SSS and inflammatory state remained significant after accounting for objective SES. SSS with reference to the community was a stronger predictor of inflammatory state than SSS with reference to the nation. DISCUSSION Our finding adds to the scientific literature on SSS and health, highlights the importance of including SSS measures in this context, and supports future research on the relative role and biological pathways by which SSS may impact pregnancy, birth and fetal/child development and health.

Abstract
Preeclampsia (PE) is a hypertensive disease of pregnancy associated with substantial maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. CORIN is a transmembrane type II serine protease expressed in cardiomyocytes that converts pro-atrial natriuretic peptide into atrial natriuretic peptide, a cardiac hormone that regulates blood pressure. High levels of soluble CORIN have been reported in PE and are supposed to be cardiac in origin. We hypothesized that during pregnancy soluble CORIN is released by the syncytiotrophoblast and that increased levels of soluble CORIN in preeclampsia originate from placenta. A total of 375 patients (181 PE patients and 194 controls) were analyzed. High levels of soluble CORIN were confirmed in maternal blood from preeclamptic pregnancies compared with controls. Differentiated primary villous cytotrophoblasts showed that CORIN was expressed (mRNA and protein levels) and secreted by trophoblastic cells, mostly by the syncytiotrophoblast. Finally, placental explants showed a significant increase in CORIN production and secretion in PE cases compared with controls. This study showed that CORIN is secreted by trophoblastic cells and that high levels of soluble CORIN in preeclampsia have a placental origin.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Preeclampsia is considered as a serious life-threatening condition that could affect both maternal and fetal outcome. Many studies have examined the association of nutritional factors with the incidence of preeclampsia. However, little is known about the possible role of vitamin D in the development of preeclampsia among the Iranian population. OBJECTIVE The aim of the present study was to evaluate the association between vitamin D status and preeclampsia. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 120 pregnant women who were referred to Kamali and Alborz General Hospital located in the Karaj City were enrolled in this study and categorized into preeclamptic and control groups (n = 60/each). The clinical details of patients such as demographic characteristics and laboratory findings were obtained from the patients. The serum levels of vitamin D, calcium, phosphorus, and parathormone were also measured. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to assess for independent predictors of preeclampsia. RESULTS The mean age among pregnant women with preeclampsia and control group were 31.48 ± 5.25 and 29.01 ± 5.28, respectively. The mean body mass index among the preeclamptic group was 27.92 ± 4.98, which was significantly higher compared to the control group (p < 0.001). The serum vitamin D levels were significantly lower in women with preeclampsia compared to the control subjects (p = 0.007). Moreover, no correlation between vitamin D deficiency and predisposing factors of preeclampsia was observed after adjusting for confounding factors. CONCLUSION Our study revealed that serum vitamin D level is significantly lower in among the pregnant women diagnosed with preeclampsia compared to the healthy subjects. However, no correlation was observed between the vitamin D status and the risk of preeclampsia development.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The administration of aspirin <16 weeks gestation to women who are at high risk for preeclampsia has been shown to reduce the rate of preterm preeclampsia by 65%. The traditional approach to identify such women who are at risk is based on risk factors from maternal characteristics, obstetrics, and medical history as recommended by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. An alternative approach to screening for preeclampsia has been developed by the Fetal Medicine Foundation. This approach allows the estimation of patient-specific risks of preeclampsia that requires delivery before a specified gestational age with the use of Bayes theorem-based model. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to examine the diagnostic accuracy of the Fetal Medicine Foundation Bayes theorem-based model, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence recommendations for the prediction of preterm preeclampsia at 11-13+6 weeks gestation in a large Asian population STUDY DESIGN: This was a prospective, nonintervention, multicenter study in 10,935 singleton pregnancies at 11-13+6 weeks gestation in 11 recruiting centers across 7 regions in Asia between December 2016 and June 2018. Maternal characteristics and medical, obstetric, and drug history were recorded. Mean arterial pressure and uterine artery pulsatility indices were measured according to standardized protocols. Maternal serum placental growth factor concentrations were measured by automated analyzers. The measured values of mean arterial pressure, uterine artery pulsatility index, and placental growth factor were converted into multiples of the median. The Fetal Medicine Foundation Bayes theorem-based model was used for the calculation of patient-specific risk of preeclampsia at <37 weeks gestation (preterm preeclampsia) and at any gestation (all preeclampsia) in each participant. The performance of screening for preterm preeclampsia and all preeclampsia by a combination of maternal factors, mean arterial pressure, uterine artery pulsatility index, and placental growth factor (triple test) was evaluated with the adjustment of aspirin use. We examined the predictive performance of the model by the use of receiver operating characteristic curve and calibration by measurements of calibration slope and calibration in the large. The detection rate of screening by the Fetal Medicine Foundation Bayes theorem-based model was compared with the model that was derived from the application of American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and National Institute for Health and Care Excellence recommendations. RESULTS There were 224 women (2.05%) who experienced preeclampsia, which included 73 cases (0.67%) of preterm preeclampsia. In pregnancies with preterm preeclampsia, the mean multiples of the median values of mean arterial pressure and uterine artery pulsatility index were significantly higher (mean arterial pressure, 1.099 vs 1.008 [P<.001]; uterine artery pulsatility index, 1.188 vs 1.063[P=.006]), and the mean placental growth factor multiples of the median was significantly lower (0.760 vs 1.100 [P<.001]) than in women without preeclampsia. The Fetal Medicine Foundation triple test achieved detection rates of 48.2%, 64.0%, 71.8%, and 75.8% at 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% fixed false-positive rates, respectively, for the prediction of preterm preeclampsia. These were comparable with those of previously published data from the Fetal Medicine Foundation study. Screening that used the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommendations achieved detection rate of 54.6% at 20.4% false-positive rate. The detection rate with the use of National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guideline was 26.3% at 5.5% false-positive rate. CONCLUSION Based on a large number of women, this study has demonstrated that the Fetal Medicine Foundation Bayes theorem-based model is effective in the prediction of preterm preeclampsia in an Asian population and that this method of screening is superior to the approach recommended by American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. We have also shown that the Fetal Medicine Foundation prediction model can be implemented as part of routine prenatal care through the use of the existing infrastructure of routine prenatal care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the relationship between prenatal and postnatal inflammation-related risk factors and severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). STUDY DESIGN The study included infants born <30 weeks in California from 2007 to 2011. Multivariable log-binomial regression was used to assess the association between prenatal and postnatal inflammation-related exposures and severe ROP, defined as stage 3-5 or surgery for ROP. RESULTS Of 14,816 infants, 10.8% developed severe ROP. Though prenatal inflammation-related risk factors were initially associated with severe ROP, after accounting for the effect of these risk factors on gestational age at birth through mediation analysis, the association was non-significant (P = 0.6). Postnatal factors associated with severe ROP included prolonged oxygen exposure, sepsis, intraventricular hemorrhage, and necrotizing enterocolitis. CONCLUSION Postnatal inflammation-related factors were associated with severe ROP more strongly than prenatal factors. The association between prenatal inflammation-related factors and ROP was explained by earlier gestational age in infants exposed to prenatal inflammation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The process of acculturation (post-migration acquisition of host culture and/or loss of heritage culture) likely represents a key mediator of the observed post-migration decline in health that is evident among immigrant populations such as Mexican Americans. The observations that migrant health declines progressively as not only a function of length of stay in the U.S. but also across generations, and that this inter-generational decline in health is evident as early as at the time of birth itself, supports the concept of fetal programming of acculturation's effects. However, the underlying mechanisms remain to be elucidated. Inflammation during pregnancy represents a candidate pathway of particular interest for 2 reasons: it represents a key biological mediator of the psychosocial and/or behavioral sequelae of acculturation on health, and it represents a key pathway by which maternal states and conditions during pregnancy may influence fetal development and subsequent birth and child developmental and health outcomes. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the relationship between acculturation and inflammation across pregnancy in a population of Mexican-American women. Specifically, we tested the hypothesis that a higher level of acculturation is associated with higher circulating concentrations across pregnancy of the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6). METHODS 75 pregnant first- or second-generation Mexican-American women constituted the study population. Acculturation was quantified using a commonly-used and previously validated measure - the Acculturation Rating Scale for Mexican Americans (ARSMA). Maternal blood samples were collected during early, mid and late pregnancy for analysis of circulating IL-6 concentrations. RESULTS Hierarchical linear models indicated a significantly and positive main effect of acculturation on IL-6 concentrations across pregnancy after adjusting for key covariates including gestational age(s) at blood sampling, socioeconomic status, pre-pregnancy BMI, and presence of obstetric risk conditions. CONCLUSIONS Maternal inflammation during pregnancy may represent a biological pathway of interest in the context of the inter-generational effects of acculturation from a mother to her as-yet-unborn child.

Abstract
Preeclampsia (PE) is a syndrome manifested by high blood pressure that could develop in the latter half of pregnancy; however, the underlying mechanisms are not understood. Recent evidence points to the function of noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) as novel regulators of the invasion, migration, proliferation, and apoptosis of trophoblasts involved in the development of placental vasculature. Here, we investigated the role of long intergenic ncRNA 00473 (linc00473) in PE and the associated molecular mechanisms. The expression of linc00473 was downregulated in the placenta of patients with severe PE as revealed by qRT-PCR analysis. In vitro, linc00473 knockdown in trophoblast cell lines HTR-8/SVneo, JAR, and JEG3 significantly inhibited cell proliferation and promoted apoptosis, whereas linc00473 overexpression stimulated trophoblast proliferation. The mechanistic insights were provided by RNA-seq and qRT-PCR, which revealed that linc00473 could regulate the transcription of genes relevant to cell growth, migration, and apoptosis. In particular, linc00473 inhibited the expression of tissue factor pathway inhibitor 2 (TFPI2) through binding to lysine-specific demethylase 1 (LSD1). These results indicate that linc00473 could be involved in the pathogenesis and development of PE and may be a candidate biomarker as well as therapeutic target for this disease.
