Abstract
Several studies showed that adipokines are associated with types of cancer which are documented to be effective in cancer biology. This study aimed to determine the relationship between vaspin rs2236242 polymorphism and the vaspin level with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), and multinodular goiter (MNG). In this cross-sectional study, we recruited 170 candidates. Ninety patients with newly diagnosed (PTC 60 patients and MNG 30 patients), and 80 participants as a control group referred to Shariati Hospital, Tehran, Iran, were enrolled in the study. The vaspin hormone measurements were conducted utilizing the Elisa Kit. Using Tetra amplification resistant-mutation system polymerase chain reaction (T-ARMS-PCR), the genotype of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs2236242 was determined. The statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software version 20. Our findings showed significant age and genotype frequency differences in three groups (p-value < 0.05). There was no significant difference in vaspin levels between PTC, and control groups. The level of vaspin in MNG compared to the control group had significantly different, but there were no differences after adjustment for age. Results showed the genotypes of vaspin rs2236242 polymorphism are not associated with the level of vaspin. The genotypes and allele frequencies of vaspin rs2236242 in the PTC and MNG groups were significant compared to the control group. We have found vaspin rs2236242 gene polymorphism as a potential marker of papillary thyroid cancer. The A allele of the vaspin SNP rs2236242 plays a protective role against PTC and MNG. SNP at rs2236242 was not significantly associated with vaspin levels.

Abstract
Environmental factors such as diet and lifestyle have been shown to influence the development of some intestinal mucosal lesions that may be precursors of colorectal cancer (CRC). The presence of these alterations seems to be associated with misbalanced immunological parameter levels. However, it is still unclear as to which immunological parameters are altered in each phase of CRC development. In this work, we aimed to study the potential relationships of immunological and metabolic parameters with diet in a CRC-related lesion context. Dietary information was obtained using an annual semi-quantitative food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) from 93 volunteers classified via colonoscopy examination according to the presence of intestinal polyps or adenocarcinoma. Cytokines, chemokines, and adipokines were determined from serum samples. We observed a reduction in adiponectin according to the damage to the mucosa, accompanied by an increase and decrease in C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 10 (CXCL10) and resistin, respectively, in CRC cases. The presence of aberrant crypt foci (ACF) in the polyp group was associated with higher tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) concentrations. Vegetables were directly correlated with adiponectin and resistin levels, while the opposite occurred with red meat. A bioactive compound, soluble pectin, showed a negative association with TNF-α. Future dietary strategies could be developed to modulate specific immunological parameters in the context of CRC.

Abstract
This study aimed to elucidate the clinicopathological significance of chemerin immunohistochemical expression in colorectal cancer (CRC) based on histologic components. Immunohistochemistry was performed to detect chemerin in 266 human CRC tissues. Correlation between chemerin expression, clinicopathological characteristics, and survival in CRC. A meta-analysis was performed to claify the prognostic role of chemerin tissue expression in malignant tumors. Chemerin was expressed in 125 of 266 CRC tissues (47.0 %) and was significantly correlated with distant metastasis (P = 0.012). However, no significant correlation was observed between chemerin expression and other clinicopathological parameters. Subgroup analyses based on histological components showed that chemerin expression was significantly higher in CRCs with the mucinous component than in those without the mucinous component (P 0.001). However, there was no significant correlation between chemerin expression and the micropapillary component. Patients with chemerin expression had worse overall and recurrence-free survival rates (P = 0.017 and P = 0.009, respectively). The prognostic significance of chemerin was found in CRCs without the mucinous component but not in those with the mucinous component. Chemerin expression was significantly correlated with poor survival in breast and ovarian cancers in the meta-analysis. Chemerin expression significantly correlated with distant metastasis and poor survival in CRCs. The predictive role of patient prognosis is useful for CRCs, especially those with no mucinous component.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity is a well-established risk factor in the development of colorectal cancer; however, the mechanism mediating this relationship is not well understood. The adipokine, adiponectin, has an inverse relationship with obesity. Experimental studies have shown adiponectin to have dichotomous inflammatory and tumorigenic roles. Its role in the development of colorectal cancer, including the potential effect of its increase following bariatric surgery, is not yet clear. There are conflicting results from studies evaluating this relationship. This study sought to provide a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the association between systemic adiponectin levels in patients with colorectal cancer and adenoma. METHODS An electronic literature search was performed using PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science as well as gray literature. Articles were screened for inclusion criteria and assessed for quality using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Pooled mean differences were calculated using a random effects model. Subgroup and meta-regression analyses were performed to identify potential sources of heterogeneity. RESULTS Thirty-two observational studies comparing systemic adiponectin in colorectal cancer vs healthy controls were included. Colorectal cancer cases had lower systemic adiponectin levels (overall pooled mean difference = -1.05 μg/ml [95% CI: -1.99; -0.12] p = 0.03); however, significant heterogeneity was present (I2 = 95% p < 0.01). Subgroup and meta- regression analyses results could not identify a source of the significant heterogeneity across the studies. CONCLUSIONS Studies suggest a trend towards lower systemic adiponectin levels in colorectal cancer patients, but the heterogeneity observed showed current evidence is not sufficient to definitively draw any conclusions. These data, however, suggest rising adiponectin is unlikely to account for the reported observation of increased CRC following bariatric surgery. Further studies with prospective age, race, and BMI-matched cohorts, and standardized adiponectin measurements may provide a better understanding of this relationship.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the role of inflammatory processes in benign prostatic enlargement among men with elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels without a history of prostatic disease. Additionally, we aimed to examine the influence of serum zinc levels on prostate volume. We investigated the associations between systemic inflammatory markers, serum PSA, and serum zinc levels in 48 men without a history of prostatic disease, aged between 60-72 years, and 30 healthy men in the same age range. Data collection occurred between 1/2/2022 to 1/10/2022. The results are presented as mean values ± standard error (SE), and statistical significance was determined at p≤0.05. The levels of sIL-8 (P: 44.295±1.002, C: 1.404±0.2562), IL-6 (P: 7.406±0.5632, C: 4.468±0.830), CRP (P: 14.765±0.565, C: 6.267±0.538), increased significantly in patients with high PSA, while zinc levels (P: 92.305±2.8235, C: 114.565±8.861) decreased in the patient group. Regarding white blood cell (WBC) parameters, patients exhibited a significant increase in WBC total count (P: 12995.00±488.47, C: 7713.333±777.778), neutrophil % (P: 69.450±1.619, C: 51.200±1.826), lymphocyte % (P: 39.50±2.024, C: 30.867±1.268), and NLR (2.013±0.105). Conversely, there were no significant differences in eosinophil % (P: 3.450±0.4558, C: 3.267±0.5297), basophil % (P: 0.300±0.105, C: 0.267±1182), or monocyte % (P: 3.450±0.4558, C: 3.267±0.5297) between the two groups. In men without known prostatic illness, increased PSA was linked to markers of systemic inflammation. The results indicate the role of inflammatory processes in increasing the size of the prostate gland, as evidenced by the increased levels of immune markers like white blood cells and interleukins, along with the influence of zinc. Future research is required to determine how these markers relate to the development and incidence of prostate cancer.

Abstract
Multiple myeloma (MM) is a hematologic disorder characterized by the accumulation of malignant plasma cells in the bone marrow. Genetic and environmental factors are contributed to the etiology of MM. Notably, studies have shown that obesity increases the risk of MM and worsens outcomes for MM patients. Adipokines play an important role in mediating the close association between MM and metabolic derangements. In this review, we summarize the epidemiologic studies to show that the risk of MM is increased in obese. Accumulating clinical evidence suggests that adipokines could display a correlation with MM. In vitro and in vivo studies have shown that adipokines are linked to MM, including roles in the biological behavior of MM cells, cancer-associated bone loss, the progression of MM, and drug resistance. Current and potential therapeutic strategies targeted to adipokines are discussed, proposing that adipokines can guide early patient diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract
Colorectal cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers worldwide. There is a great interest and need to find simple, inexpensive, and minimally invasive diagnostic tests. The aim of the study was to analyze the salivary concentrations of chemerin, α-defensin 1, and TNF-α in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients and in a healthy control group. The concentration of these proteins was simultaneously determined in the serum of subjects. We also aimed to assess the correlation of these results and selected clinicopathological features. This prospective study was comprised of 39 CRC patients and 40 control group patients. Salivary and serum concentrations were determined by enzyme immunoassays. The salivary and serum concentrations of chemerin, α-defensin 1, and TNF-α were significantly higher in cancer patients compared to the control group. No correlation was found between concentrations of the proteins and the clinical stage of cancer and tumor location. The ROC curve analysis showed that although salivary concentrations of all proteins showed 100% sensitivity and 100% specificity, serum concentrations of the analyzed proteins were characterized by 100% sensitivity and over 90% specificity. The assessment of chemerin, α-defensin 1, and TNF-α concentrations in saliva seem to have great potential as quick and useful biomarkers in the early diagnosis of CRC.

Abstract
Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the most common malignancy of the oral cavity. In the tumor microenvironment, tumor-associated neutrophils (TANs) can promote tumor growth, invasion, and metastasis. The aim of our study was to explore the relationship between neutrophils infiltration and Chemerin expression in tumor cells, as well as their relationship with the clinicopathological parameters and clinical prognosis of 74 cases of OSCC. We also explored the role of the interaction between neutrophils and Chemerin in the functions of OSCC cells (Cal27, SCC9, and SCC15) in vitro. Our results showed that in OSCC, Chemerin over-expression may increase neutrophils infiltration in tumor tissues. Chemerin over-expression and neutrophils infiltration were the prognostic factors of poor clinical outcomes. Furthermore, we discovered that neutrophils promoted OSCC migration, invasion, and proliferation and EMT through Chemerin. Neutrophils activated JAK2/STAT3 signaling through Chemerin and then up-regulated its downstream signaling target genes, such as Phospho-Rb, E2F1, CyclinE1, and CyclinD1. Taken together, our results revealed that neutrophils and Chemerin are potentially involved in OSCC progression and metastasis. Abstract
Simple Summary The chemoattractant adipokine chemerin has been found to be elevated in several types of cancer, including colorectal carcinoma. The functional role of chemerin in colorectal carcinoma, however, has not been elucidated to date. This study analyses the impact of the chemerin analog CG34 on proliferation, colony formation, and migration in the human colorectal cancer cell lines HCT116, HT29 and SW620. In addition, the effect of systemic CG34 treatment is investigated in two xenograft mouse models of colorectal cancer (HCT116-luc and HT29-luc). The results of this study suggest there is a stimulatory role of chemerin receptor activation on the growth of colorectal carcinoma. Abstract Background: Chemerin plasma concentration has been reported to be positively correlated with the risk of colorectal cancer. However, the potential regulation of CRC tumorigenesis and progression has not yet been investigated in an experimental setting. This study addresses this hypothesis by investigating proliferation, colony formation, and migration of CRC cell lines in vitro as well as in animal models. Methods: In vitro, microscopic assays to study proliferation, as well as a scratch-wound assay for migration monitoring, were applied using the human CRC cell lines HCT116, HT29, and SW620 under the influence of the chemerin analog CG34. The animal study investigated HCT116-luc and HT29-luc subcutaneous tumor size and bioluminescence during treatment with CG34 versus control, followed by an ex-vivo analysis of vessel density and mitotic activity. Results: While the proliferation of the three CRC cell lines in monolayers was not clearly stimulated by CG34, the chemerin analog promoted colony formation in three-dimensional aggregates. An effect on cell migration was not observed. In the treatment study, CG34 significantly stimulated both growth and bioluminescence signals of HCT116-luc and HT29-luc xenografts. Conclusions: The results of this study represent the first indication of a tumor growth-stimulating effect of chemerin signaling in CRC.

Abstract
Background: Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is the most common gynecological cancer in women. Resistin, an inflammatory adipocytokine, is associated with obesity, insulin resistance, and various cancer types. Materials and Methods: We investigated resistin expression in tissues and its association with the clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis of patients with EOC. The SKOV3 and CAOV3 cell lines were treated with exogenous resistin and rapamycin (resistin inhibitor), and the expression of mTOR in SKOV3 and CAOV3 cells was measured. Cell proliferation was measured using the CCK-8 assay. Western blotting analysis was performed to examine the phosphorylation of P70S6K and mTOR. Wound healing and Transwell analyses were conducted to examine the effect of resistin on the migration of SKOV3 and CAOV3 cells. Results: High resistin expression was positively correlated with the pathological grade (P = 0.017) and lymph node metastasis (P = 0.045). However, resistin expression was not correlated with age, FIGO stage, or residual tumor after initial laparotomy (P > 0.05). Cox multivariate analysis showed that resistin expression was an independent factor for determining disease-free survival, whereas lymph node metastasis, resistin expression, and age (≥55 years) were independent factors affecting overall survival. Exogenous resistin induced ovarian cancer cell proliferation, whereas rapamycin had the opposite effect. Resistin promoted the proliferation of ovarian cancer cells via the mTOR signaling pathway and was associated with phosphorylating P70S6K. Furthermore, resistin promoted the migration of ovarian cancer cells. Conclusions: Resistin may promote the occurrence of ovarian cancer and is related to the prognosis of patients. This protein may also affect the proliferation of EOC cells through the mTOR signaling pathway. Therefore, resistin shows potential as a molecular therapeutic target in ovarian cancer.

Abstract
Recent studies have revealed that fatty tissue, so far considered an energy storage organ, is also the source of many substances called adipokines, including chemerin which plays many important functions in the body. Chemerin stimulates adipocytes maturation and differentiation, as well as acts as a chemoattractant, which stimulates innate and acquired immunity. This adipokine participates in the early stages of acute inflammation as well as its suppression by reacting with the CMKLR1 receptor. In various diseases associated with inflammatory processes, the level of chemerin in the serum increases. It is also considered a marker for benign and malignant tumors. Explanation of the pathomechanisms involving this adipokine is of a high importance and may contribute to the development of new possibilities in the treatment of many diseases. The article presents the latest information on the role of chemerin in various pathological states, particularly in psoriasis.

Abstract
Background and Aim: Studies on hematological parameters in the differential diagnosis of idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) and breast cancer (BC) are limited. This study investigated whether preoperative fibrinogen and hematological indexes can be used in the differential diagnosis of patients with IGM and early-onset BC. Methods: Fifty patients with BC, 55 patients with IGM, and 50 healthy volunteer women were included in the study. Results: There was a statistically significant difference between the IGM and the BC with respect to fibrinogen, fibrinogen/albumin (Fib/Alb) ratio, C-reactive protein (CRP), white blood cells (WBC), neutrophils, neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet–lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and monocyte values. When fibrinogen (p < 0.001), the Fib/Alb ratio (p < 0.001), CRP (p < 0.001), WBC (p < 0.001), neutrophil (p < 0.001), NLR (p < 0.001), monocyte (p = 0.008), and 2-hour sedimentation rate (p < 0.001) were compared between the groups, the highest levels were found in the IGM group. There was a negative relationship between CRP and albumin, and a positive relationship was observed between CRP and WBC, NLR, PLR, and 2-h sedimentation rate. CRP had the highest sensitivity (95%), whereas the Fib/Alb ratio (86%) had the highest specificity. Patients with recurrent IGM had increased fibrinogen, Fib/Alb, CRP, neutrophils, NLR, and 2-h erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and decreased lymphocyte levels compared to non-recurrent patients. Conclusions: Preoperative CRP, albumin, fibrinogen, Fib/Alb, WBC, neutrophil, NLR, monocyte, and 2-h ESR have considerable potential to be early and sensitive biomarkers of IGM caused by inflammation compared to BC. These parameters also have a significant effect on the recurrence of the disease, suggesting their potential as a practical guide for the differential diagnosis of BC from IGM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Several aspects of the correlation between colon cancer and hemostatic markers are still unknown to many researchers in the field. In this study, we evaluated the association, if any, of preoperative platelet (PLT) counts and plasma fibrinogen levels with postoperative lymph node involvement and venous invasion in colon cancer patients. METHODS This study retrospectively included eighty patients with colon cancer (mean age 58.09 years; 37% female 63% male). RESULTS Patients with negative lymph nodes and venous invasion showed a significantly lower PLT count and higher fibrinogen level than their counterparts, i.e., patients with positive lymph nodes (p<0.001, all of them) and venous invasion (p<0.001, all of them). The results also showed a positive association of PLT counts and fibrinogen levels with lymphatic invasion (r=0.670, p<0.001 and r=0.639, p<0.001, respectively) and a positive association of PLT counts and fibrinogen levels with venous invasion (r=0.3988, p<0.001 and r=0.5268, p<0.001, respectively). According to the results of the ROC curve analysis, when the PLT count cutoff was 290/mm3, the sensitivity and specificity were 82% and 86.67%, respectively (AUC = 0.8840, p<0.0001, 95% CI 0.8084-0.9596). When the fibrinogen level cutoff was 310.0 mg/dL, the sensitivity and specificity were 72% and 96.67%, respectively (AUC 0.8790, p <0.0001, 95% CI 0.8067-0.9513). CONCLUSION The preoperative PLT count and plasma fibrinogen level may be considered key markers to monitor postoperative lymph node involvement and venous invasion in colon cancer patients.

Abstract
Background The prognostic role of preoperative fibrinogen in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients remains controversial. Therefore, we assessed the predictive value of preoperative fibrinogen and developed a tool for predicting the survival of CRC patients. Methods This retrospective study evaluated 1869 patients who underwent curative resection for CRC. Univariate and multivariate survival analyses were conducted to identify the factors correlated with overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS). Nomograms were developed as a graphical representation of the Cox proportional hazards regression models. The performance of the nomograms was assessed by Harrell’s concordance index (c-index) and calibration plots. Results The preoperative fibrinogen levels were correlated with age, tumor differentiation, tumor location, pT category, and TNM stage. In the multivariate analysis, elevated fibrinogen level was independently correlated with worse OS and CSS (OS: hazard ratio [HR] = 0.777, 95% confidence interval [95% CI] = 0.630–0.958, P = 0.018; CSS: HR = 0.757, 95% CI = 0.605–0.947, P = 0.015). The nomograms could predict outcomes with a c-index for OS and CSS of 0.79 and 0.81, respectively. The nomograms also had a good calibration. Conclusion Preoperative fibrinogen level was an independent marker of poor prognosis in patients with nonmetastatic CRC, and there was a threshold level for the use of fibrinogen as a prognostic factor. Furthermore, nomograms may help predict the individual risk of OS and CSS in patients treated for CRC.

Abstract
Adipose tissue is a highly dynamic endocrine tissue and constitutes a central node in the interorgan crosstalk network through adipokines, which cause pleiotropic effects, including the modulation of angiogenesis, metabolism, and inflammation. Specifically, digestive cancers grow anatomically near adipose tissue. During their interaction with cancer cells, adipocytes are reprogrammed into cancer-associated adipocytes and secrete adipokines to affect tumor cells. Moreover, the liver is the central metabolic hub. Adipose tissue and the liver cooperatively regulate whole-body energy homeostasis via adipokines. Obesity, the excessive accumulation of adipose tissue due to hyperplasia and hypertrophy, is currently considered a global epidemic and is related to low-grade systemic inflammation characterized by altered adipokine regulation. Obesity-related digestive diseases, including gastroesophageal reflux disease, Barrett's esophagus, esophageal cancer, colon polyps and cancer, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, viral hepatitis-related diseases, cholelithiasis, gallbladder cancer, cholangiocarcinoma, pancreatic cancer, and diabetes, might cause specific alterations in adipokine profiles. These patterns and associated bases potentially contribute to the identification of prognostic biomarkers and therapeutic approaches for the associated digestive diseases. This review highlights important findings about altered adipokine profiles relevant to digestive diseases, including hepatic, pancreatic, gastrointestinal, and biliary tract diseases, with a perspective on clinical implications and mechanistic explorations.

Abstract
Aim: Circulating chemerin level has been reported to be higher in patients with various types of cancer. However, the conclusions obtained are not unified. The aim of present study is to draw an evidence-based conclusion on the relationship between circulating chemerin and risk of cancer. Materials & methods: A systematic search was carried out in PubMed and Web of Science up to 30 June 2019. The random-effects model was applied to calculate summary standardized mean differences with 95% CIs. Results: The meta-analysis included a total of 12 separate studies, 876 cases and 739 healthy controls. The results showed that the expression level of circulating chemerin was significantly higher in cancer patients than that in control group (pooled standardized mean difference = 1.47, 95% CI = 1.03-1.90). Conclusion: This meta-analysis concludes that a high level of circulating chemerin is strongly associated with cancer risk.

Abstract
Chemerin is a multifunctional protein involved among others in adipogenesis, angiogenesis and lipid as well as glucose metabolism. Chemerin is an essential factor in promotion of chemotaxis of numerous immune cell types and plays an important role in several pathophysiologic conditions. Chemerin receptors are present on monocytes/macrophages, T cells, natural killer and dendritic cells as well as neutrophils. However, the role of chemerin and chemerin receptors in immune response and gastrointestinal diseases is still poorly understood. Accumulating, clinical and experimental studies observed disturbation of chemerin and chemerin receptors in a number of disorders including Barrett's esophagus, esophageal cancer, gastric cancer, hepatic dysfunction, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer. Moreover, chemerin and chemerin receptors have been shown to regulate proliferation, migration and invasion of gastrointestinal and immune cells as well as cancer-associated fibroblasts. In this review we present the current state of knowledge about the contribution of chemerin to immune response and gastrointestinal disorders.

Abstract
Chemerin is a multifunctional protein acting mainly through the G protein-coupled receptor ChemR23/CMKLR1/Chemerin1. Its expression is frequently downregulated in human tumors, including in melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma of the skin and anti-tumoral properties of chemerin were reported in mouse tumor graft models. In the present study, we report the development of spontaneous skin tumors in aged ChemR23-deficient mice. In order to test the potential therapeutic benefit of chemerin analogs, a transgenic model in which bioactive chemerin is over-expressed by basal keratinocytes was generated. These animals are characterized by increased levels of chemerin immunoreactivity and bioactivity in the skin and the circulation. In a chemical carcinogenesis model, papillomas developed later, were less numerous, and their progression to carcinomas was delayed. Temporal control of chemerin expression by doxycycline allowed to attribute its effects to late stages of carcinogenesis. The protective effects of chemerin were partly abrogated by ChemR23 invalidation. These results demonstrate that chemerin is able to delay very significantly tumor progression in a model that recapitulates closely the evolution of solid cancer types in human and suggest that the chemerin-ChemR23 system might constitute an interesting target for therapeutic intervention in the cancer field.

Abstract
Background and objective Noninvasive prognostic tools for colorectal cancer (CRC) are urgently needed. This study was designed to investigate the prognostic value of preoperative serum lipid and lipoprotein concentrations (including ApoA-I, Apo-B, HDL-C, LDL-C, TC and TG) and CRP levels retrospectively in CRC patients. Methods Preoperative serum lipid and lipoprotein concentrations (including ApoA-I, Apo-B, HDL-C, LDL-C, TC and TG) and CRP levels were analyzed retrospectively in 250 patients with CRC. The prognostic significance of these indexes was determined by univariate and multivariate Cox hazard models. Results CRC patients with higher levels of ApoA-I and HDL-C and lower levels of CRP had significantly longer overall survival (OS, log rank test, p<0.05). Based on univariate analysis, ApoA-I levels (p=0.002), CRP levels (p=0.007), HDL-C levels (p=0.005), pT classification (p=0.005), pN classification (p<0.001), pM classification (p<0.001) and pTNM stage (p<0.001) were significantly associated with OS. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analysis indicated that ApoA-I levels (HR: 1.52, p=0.023), CRP levels (HR: 1.85, p=0.035) and pTNM stage (HR: 2.53, p< 0.001) were independent predictors of CRC survival. The included patients were then stratified into three tiers based on the ApoA-I and CRP levels. In the whole cohort, the OS and disease-free survival differed significantly between the low-risk (ApoA-I≥1.08 mg/dL and CRP<3.04 mg/dL), medium-risk (ApoA-I≥1.08 mg/dL or CRP<3.04 mg/dL), and high-risk (ApoA-I<1.08 mg/dL and CRP ≥3.04 mg/dL) groups (p=0.001 and p=0.004). Conclusion Decreased levels of ApoA-I and HDL-C and increased levels of CRP were predictive of poor prognosis among patients with CRC. In addition, the combination of ApoA-I and CRP can serve as a novel prognostic stratification system for more accurate clinical staging of CRC.

Abstract
Chemerin is widely recognized as an adipokine, with diverse biological roles in cellular differentiation and metabolism, as well as a leukocyte chemoattractant. Research investigating the role of chemerin in the obesity-cancer relationship has provided evidence both for pro- and anti-cancer effects. The tumor-promoting effects of chemerin primarily involve direct effects on migration, invasion, and metastasis as well as growth and proliferation of cancer cells. Chemerin can also promote tumor growth via the recruitment of tumor-supporting mesenchymal stromal cells and stimulation of angiogenesis pathways in endothelial cells. In contrast, the majority of evidence supports that the tumor-suppressing effects of chemerin are immune-mediated and result in a shift from immunosuppressive to immunogenic cell populations within the tumor microenvironment. Systemic chemerin and chemerin produced within the tumor microenvironment may contribute to these effects via signaling through CMKLR1 (chemerin1), GPR1 (chemerin2), and CCLR2 on target cells. As such, inhibition or activation of chemerin signaling could be beneficial as a therapeutic approach depending on the type of cancer. Additional studies are required to determine if obesity influences cancer initiation or progression through increased adipose tissue production of chemerin and/or altered chemerin processing that leads to changes in chemerin signaling in the tumor microenvironment.

Abstract
The chemoattractant adipokine chemerin is related to the metabolic syndrome, which is a risk factor for different cancers. Recent studies provide evidence that chemerin is an important molecule in colorectal cancer (CRC) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Serum chemerin is high in CRC patients and low in HCC patients and may serve as a differential diagnostic marker for HCC and liver metastases from CRC. To this end, serum chemerin was measured in 36 patients with CRC metastases, 32 patients with HCC and 49 non-tumor patients by ELISA. Chemerin serum protein levels were, however, similar in the three cohorts. Serum chemerin was higher in hypertensive than normotensive tumor patients but not controls. Cancer patients with hypercholesterolemia or hyperuricemia also had increased serum chemerin. When patients with these comorbidities were excluded from the calculation, chemerin was higher in CRC than HCC patients but did not differ from controls. Chemerin did not correlate with the tumor markers carcinoembryonic antigen, carbohydrate antigen 19-9 and alpha-fetoprotein in both cohorts and was not changed with tumor-node-metastasis stage in HCC. Chemerin was not associated with hepatic fat, liver inflammation and fibrosis. To conclude, systemic chemerin did not discriminate between CRC metastases and HCC. Comorbidities among tumor patients were linked with elevated systemic chemerin.

Abstract
According to its incidence patterns, colorectal cancer (CRC) tends to occur more frequently in males than in females, and the evidence shows that CRC is a hormone-related tumor. These findings indicate that androgen receptor (AR) gene methylation might be important for the regulation of the CRC risk in the different sexes. We used a case-control study to investigate the association between AR methylation in peripheral blood (PBL) and CRC risk. A cohort study was conducted to analyze the effect of AR methylation levels in both PBL and tissue on the prognosis of CRC. AR methylation levels were detected using methylation-sensitive high-resolution melting (MS-HRM). The results indicate that the hypomethylation of AR was significantly associated with the risk of CRC (OR = 1.869, 95% CI: 1.629-2.141, P < 0.001), and the results remained similar after adjusting for the propensity score (PS) (OR = 1.344, 95% CI: 1.147-1.575, P < 0.001) and PS matching (OR = 1.138, 95% CI: 1.000-1.292 P = 0.049). The hypomethylation of AR was significantly associated with CRC in males (OR = 2.309, 95% CI: 1.200-4.245; P = 0.012) but not females (OR = 1.000, 95% CI: 0.567-1.765; P = 0.999). The methylation status of AR in PBL and tissue does not seem to be associated with prognosis in colorectal cancer (OR = 1.425, 95% CI: 0.895-2.269, P = 0.135; OR = 0.930, 95% CI: 0.674-1.285, P = 0.661). We conclude that AR hypomethylation in PBL is associated with a high risk of CRC and may serve as a biomarker. Further studies involving large sample sizes are needed to validate the results of this study.

Abstract
Obesity-related diseases are an important part of public health; and obesity is related with colorectal cancer. Adipocyte hypertrophy and visceral adipose tissue accumulation can cause adipocitis-related diseases and pathogenic adipocyte formation. Adipose tissue has a very important and active role in immune response formation. Cytokines/adipokines, which are secreted from adipose tissue, have an active role in communication between adipocytes and macrophages. Thus, visceral adipocyte is related with low-grade chronic systemic inflammation. Adipocytes have an important role in colorectal cancer pathogenesis because of proinflammatory cytokines, growth factors, and hormones secretion. Most highlighted cytokines are adiponectin, resistin, and ghrelin. Also, insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, increased plasma insulin levels, body mass index, insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), glucose, and serum free fatty acids levels are considered to be related with colorectal cancer pathogenesis. Thus, in this review, we focus on the role of adipokines and insulin in colorectal cancer.

Abstract
Chemerin exhibits a tumor-inhibitory role in hepatocellular carcinoma. However, the effect of chemerin on essential metal elements in hepatic cells remains unclear. In our study, the contents of six important metal ions, including potassium, calcium, sodium, magnesium, iron and zinc, were detected in human hepatoma SMMC7721 and immortal hepatic QSG7701 cells by ICP-AES. The data showed that chemerin only decreases the content of intracellular iron in SMMC7721 cells. The reduction was due to the blockage of iron entry through the decrease in the mRNA levels of divalent metal transporter 1, iron regulatory proteins and transferrin receptors. Furthermore, the reduction of the cellular iron content induced alterations of p53-p27-p21 signaling to arrest the cell cycle at S phase in SMMC7721 cells treated by chemerin. Conversely, iron addition led to recovery from the inhibitory effect of chemerin on SMMC7721 cells. The results suggest that chemerin plays an important role in inhibiting the cell proliferation of hepatocellular carcinomas by interfering with cellular iron homeostasis in this type of tumors.

Abstract
Chemerin, which is encoded by retinoic acid receptor responder 2 (RARRES2), has been found to be related to malignant tumours, but its role in the development of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is largely unexplored. In the present study, a higher serum level of chemerin was evident in patients with OSCC than in healthy individuals, and this high level of chemerin significantly decreased after tumour resection. In addition, high chemerin levels were positively associated with advanced tumour stage and lymph node metastasis. The expression levels of chemerin and Chemerin Receptor 23 (ChemR23) were positively correlated with the migration and invasion of OSCC cell lines. Recombinant chemerin (R-chemerin) enhanced the in vitro migration, invasion and proliferation of OSCC cells in a concentration-dependent manner, and short hairpin RNAs (shRNAs) targeting RARRES2 decreased chemerin expression and inhibited OSCC cell metastasis and proliferation both in vitro and in vivo Additionally, R-chemerin activated manganese superoxide dismutase (SOD2) and increased the amount of intracellular hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), leading to a significant decrease in E-cadherin expression and dramatic increase in the expression of phosphorylated ERK1/2 (p-ERK1/2), Slug, Vimentin and N-cadherin, but shRNAs targeting RARRES2 reversed these effects. Moreover, knockdown of ChemR23 with small interfering RNAs (siRNA) significantly inhibited chemerin-induced OSCC cell migration/invasion and SOD2 activity. Our results revealed that chemerin is a novel biomarker for OSCC. Chemerin/ChemR23 promotes tumorigenesis and metastasis in OSCC and may be a new therapeutic target for OSCC.

Abstract
The paper gives the current data available in the literature on the relationship and pathogenetic mechanisms of influence of adipose tissue on colorectal carcinogenesis. It considers the aspects of changes in adipose tissue and microenvironment of the tumor itself, including those under the influence of biologically active substances secreted by adipocytes; differences in subcutaneous and visceral fat and their importance in the development and progression of colorectal cancer (CRC), as well as the role of adipose tissue-derived stem cells. Understanding these mechanisms for adipose tissue influence on CRC will assist not only in preventing this disease, but also in searching for new therapeutic targets.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Inflammatory processes have been suggested to have an important role in colorectal cancer (CRC) etiology. Chemerin is a recently discovered inflammatory biomarker thought to exert chemotactic, adipogenic, and angiogenic functions. However, its potential link with CRC has not been sufficiently explored. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the prospective association of circulating plasma chemerin concentrations with incident CRC. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS Prospective case-cohort study based on 27 548 initially healthy participants from the European Prospective Investigation Into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)-Potsdam cohort who were followed for up to 16 years. Baseline study information and samples were collected between August 23, 1994, and September 25, 1998. Recruitment was according to random registry sampling from the geographical area of Potsdam, Germany, and surrounding municipalities. The last date of study follow-up was May 10, 2010. Statistical analysis was conducted in 2018. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Incident CRC, colon cancer, and rectal cancer. Baseline chemerin plasma concentrations were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS A random subcohort of 221 incident CRC cases and 2329 participants free of CRC with available blood sample measurements were included in the analysis. The participants' mean (SD) age was 50 (9) years, 62.1% were female, and 16.5% had a body mass index greater than 30. In multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazards regression models taking into account established CRC risk factors, higher chemerin concentrations were associated with a greater risk of CRC, with a hazard ratio (HR) of 1.81 (95% CI, 1.08-3.05; P for trend = .007) for the highest chemerin quartile vs the lowest. Analyses by cancer subsite indicated a stronger association with colon cancer (HR, 2.27; 95% CI, 1.18-4.34 for the highest quartile vs the lowest; P for trend = .005) compared with rectal cancer (HR, 1.27; 95% CI, 0.57-2.85; P for trend = .35). The association was particularly strong for proximal colon cancer (HR, 3.97; 95% CI, 1.51-10.50; P for trend = .001). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE This study found that the association between chemerin concentration and the risk of incident CRC was linear and independent of established CRC risk factors. Further studies are warranted to evaluate chemerin as a novel immune-inflammatory agent in colorectal carcinogenesis.

Abstract
The chemokine-like peptide, chemerin, stimulates chemotaxis in several cell types. In this study we examined the expression of putative chemerin receptors in gastric cancer and the action of chemerin on cancer cell migration and invasion. Immunohistochemical studies of gastric tumors identified expression of two putative receptors, chemokine-like receptor-1 (CMKLR1) and G-protein coupled receptor 1(GPR1), in cancer cells; there was also some expression in stromal myofibroblasts although generally at a lower intensity. The expression of both receptors was detected in a gastric cancer cell line, AGS; chemerin itself was expressed in cultured gastric cancer myofibroblasts but not AGS cells. Chemerin stimulated (a) morphological transformation of AGS cells characterized by extension of processes and cell scattering, (b) migration in scratch wound assays and (c) both migration and invasion in Boyden chamber chemotaxis assays. These responses were inhibited by two putative receptor antagonists CCX832 and α-NETA. Inhibition of receptor expression by siRNA selectively reduced CMKLR1 or GPR1 and inhibited the action of chemerin indicating that both receptors contributed to the functional response. Using a proteomic approach employing stable isotope dynamic labeling of secretomes (SIDLS) to selectively label secreted proteins, we identified down regulation of tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinease (TIMP)1 and TIMP2 in media in response to chemerin. When cells were treated with chemerin and TIMP1 or TIMP2 the migration response to chemerin was reduced. The data suggest a role for chemerin in promoting the invasion of gastric cancer cells via CMKLR1 and GPR1at least partly by reducing TIMP1 and TIMP2 expression. Chemerin receptor antagonists have potential in inhibiting gastric cancer progression.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW In this review, we investigate the role of classic and novel adipocytokines in cancer pathogenesis synopsizing the mechanisms underlying the association between adipocytokines and malignancy. Special emphasis is given on novel adipocytokines as new evidence is emerging regarding their entanglement in neoplastic development. RECENT FINDINGS Recent data have emphasized the role of the triad of overweight/obesity, insulin resistance and adipocytokines in cancer. In the setting of obesity, classic and novel adipocytokines present independent and joint effects on activation of major intracellular signaling pathways implicated in cell proliferation, expansion, survival, adhesion, invasion, and metastasis. Until now, more than 15 adipocytokines have been associated with cancer, and this list continues to expand. While the plethora of circulating pro-inflammatory adipocytokines, such as leptin, resistin, extracellular nicotinamide phosphoribosyl transferase, and chemerin are elevated in malignancies, some adipocytokines such as adiponectin and omentin-1 are generally decreased in cancers and are considered protective against carcinogenesis. Elucidating the intertwining of inflammation, cellular bioenergetics, and adiposopathy is significant for the development of preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic strategies against cancer. Novel more effective and safe adipocytokine-centered therapeutic interventions may pave the way for targeted oncotherapy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Chemerin is an emerging adipocytokine at the intersection of inflammation, chemotaxis, thrombosis, fibrinolysis and metabolism. Our aims were 1) to explore circulating chemerin in resectable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) taking into account its several interfaces; 2) to study its diagnostic potential; and 3) to assess its associations with clinicopathological features of NSCLC. MATERIALS AND METHODS In a large case-control study, serum chemerin, insulin resistance and lipid parameters, classic adipocytokines, inflammatory, coagulation, fibrinolysis and tumor biomarkers were determined in 110 consecutive patients with resectable NSCLC and 110 healthy controls matched on age (± 5 years), gender and date of blood draw (± 1 month). RESULTS NSCLC cases exhibited significantly elevated circulating chemerin compared to controls (p < 0.001). In NSCLC cases, chemerin was positively associated with Homeostasis model assessment score of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), fibrinogen, plasminogen activity, tumor and inflammatory biomarkers, adiponectin, number of infiltrated lymph nodes and NSCLC stage. In control participants, circulating chemerin was positively correlated with somatometric, metabolic, lipid, hemostatic and inflammatory biomarkers, and leptin. Serum chemerin was independently associated with NSCLC, above and beyond NSCLC risk factors (OR: 2.20, 95% CI: 1.09-4.40, p = 0.03). In cases, hemostatic parameters (platelet count and plasminogen activity), HOMA-IR, CYFRA 21-1, creatinine and plant food consumption emerged as independent predictors of circulating chemerin (p < 0.05). Serum chemerin greater than 220 μg/L (cut-off point) yielded a sensitivity and a specificity of 63% and 91.8% respectively with a modest discriminative ability (AUC = 0.72, 95% C.I. 0.64-0.79) for the diagnosis of NSCLC. CONCLUSION Chemerin may represent a potentially useful biomarker in NSCLC integrating tumor-promoting networks, inflammatory and hemostatic mechanisms, and cancer-related metabolic pathways. More preclinical, prospective and longitudinal studies highlighting the pathogenetic role of chemerin in NSCLC are needed to corroborate and extend these data.

Abstract
Chemerin is a protein secreted among others by adipose tissue and liver, with a dual pro- and anti-inflammatory role in the body. These molecules exert systemic effects by modulating tissue-specific immune response and metabolism. Chemerin isoforms correlate with the turnover of fatty acids and lipoproteins that could affect intestinal inflammation. Although chemerin may interact with three types of receptors, CMKLR1 is the best studied. In this paper we reviewed current knowledge about the relationship between chemerin and lower gastrointestinal (GI) diseases, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colorectal cancer (CRC). A more detailed understanding of the role of the adipose tissue in the GI tract will not only unravel the pathophysiology of chronic intestinal diseases, but may also indicate a new therapeutic tool for their management.

Abstract
Adipokines constitute a family of protein factors secreted by white adipose tissue (WAT), that regulate the functions of WAT and other sites. Leptin, adiponectin and resistin, are the main adipokines present in serum and saliva, targeting several tissues and organs, including vessels, muscles, liver and pancreas. Besides body mass regulation, adipokines affect glucose homeostasis, inflammation, angiogenesis, cell proliferation and apoptosis, and other crucial cell procedures. Their involvement in tumor formation and growth is well established and deregulation of adipokine and adipokine receptors' expression is observed in several malignancies including those located in the head and neck region. Intracellular effects of adipokines are mediated by a plethora of receptors that activate several signaling cascades including Janus kinase/ Signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/ STAT pathway), Phospatidylinositol kinase (PI3/ Akt/ mTOR) and Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR). The present review summarizes the current knowledge on the role of adipokines family members in carcinogenesis of the head and neck region. The diagnostic and prognostic significance of adipokines and their potential role as serum and saliva biomarkers are also discussed.

Abstract
Background Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common cancers worldwide. The tumor microenvironment is very important for determining cancer cell growth and spreading. Chemerin, a newly identified adipokine secreted by adipose tissue, is known to be associated with obesity, metabolic syndrome, and insulin resistance. The present study was carried out to investigate the association between serum levels of chemerin and colorectal cancer. Methods Thirty-two patients with colorectal cancer aged 57.6±6.5 years, and twenty age, sex and BMI matched healthy controls were included in the study. Serum che me rin levels were determined using enzyme linked immuno sorbent assay. C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were determined using a turbidimetric immunoassay. Carcino embryonic antigen (CEA) and carbohydrate antigen (CA 19-9) were measured by radioimmunoassay. Results Chemerin levels were found to be significantly higher in patients relative to the controls (P<0.001) and gradually increased with the TNM tumor stage progression. The mean CRP, CEA and CA 19-9 levels were also significantly higher in patients (P<0.001). There was a significant correlation between the serum levels of chemerin and the other measured parameters in CRC patients. The area under receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) for serum chemerin was 1 at a cut-off value ≥ 161.5 with 100% sensitivity and 100% specificity. Conclusions Conclusions: The observed results suggest that chemerin may have a potential role in the pathogenesis and progression of colorectal malignancy and may be a good biomarker of colorectal cancer and stage progression.

Abstract
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is intrahepatic ectopic lipid deposition which is present despite a lack of other causes of secondary hepatic fat accumulation. It is the most common chronic liver disorder in the welldeveloped countries. NAFLD is a multidisciplinary disease that affects various systems and organs and is inextricably linked to simple obesity, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance and overt diabetes mellitus type 2. The positive energy balance related to obesity leads to a variety of systemic changes including modified levels of insulin, insulin- like growth factor-1, adipokines, hepatokines and cytokines. It is strongly linked to carcinogenesis and new evidence proves that NAFLD is associated with higher risk of all-cause mortality and cancer-specific mortality among cancer survivors. This article focuses on the association between NAFLD and extrahepatic gastrointestinal tract cancers, aiming to shed light on the pathomechanism of changes leading to the development of tumors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The pathogenesis of Kawasaki disease are still not well understood. It was designed to investigate the relationship between adipokines including chemerin, omentin-1, adiponectin and acute Kawasaki disease. METHODS Enzyme-linked immunosorbent (ELISA) was used to detect serum levels of chemerin, omentin-1, adiponectin, and inflammatory cytokines IL-1β and TNF-α in 80 cases of patients diagnosed with Kawasaki disease (KD). In addition, 20 cases of children with fever and 20 cases of healthy children were selected as febrile and normal controls. RESULTS (1) Serum levels of chemerin in KD group (87.736 ± 56.310) are higher than that of both the healthy (41.746 ± 10.824) and the febrile controls (59.683 ± 18.282) (P < 0.01). (2) Circulating omentin-1 levels in Kawasaki disease group (389.773 ± 238.611) are significantly lower than that of febrile control (542.075 ± 177.995) (P < 0.01), also serum adiponectin levels in Kawasaki disease group (16.400 ± 12.243) reduced obviously compared with the febrile control group (35.074 ± 12.486). (3)Serum cytokine levels of IL-1β in Kawasaki disease group (13.656 ± 31.151) are higher than those of normal controls (2.415 ± 6.313) (P < 0.05). (4) Correlation analysis indicates that serum levels of chemerin are positively correlated with omentin-1 (r = 0.224, 95% CI 0.06-0.529, P < 0.05). Further, serum omentin-1 levels and total cholesterol (TC) are positively correlated (r = 0.358, 95% CI 0.169-0.518, P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Circulating chemerin increased significantly in the acute stage of Kawasaki disease, while omentin-1 and adiponectin levels are decreased. These adipokines are closely associated with the early inflammation and lipid metabolism disorders of acute Kawasaki disease.

INTRODUCTION Retinoic acid (RA) signaling through its receptors (RARA, RARB, RARG, and the retinoic X receptor RXRA) is essential for healthy placental and fetal development. An important group of genes regulated by RA are the RA receptor responders (RARRES1, 2, and 3). We set out to analyze their expression and regulation in healthy and pathologically altered placentas of preeclampsia (PE) and intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) as well as in trophoblast cell lines. METHODS We performed immunohistochemical staining on placental sections and analyzed gene expression by real-time polymerase chain reaction. Additionally, we performed cell culture experiments and stimulated Swan71 and Jeg-3 cells with different RA derivates and 2'-deoxy-5-azacytidine (AZA) to induce DNA demethylation. RESULTS RARRES1, 2, and 3 and RARA, RARB, RARG, and RXRA are expressed in the extravillous part of the placenta. RARRES1, RARA, RARG, and RXRA were additionally detected in villous cytotrophoblasts. RARRES gene expression was induced via activation of RARA, RARB, and RARG in trophoblast cells. RARRES1 was overexpressed in villous trophoblasts and the syncytiotrophoblast from PE placentas, but not in IUGR without PE. Promoter methylation was detectable for RARRES1 and RARB based on their sensitivity toward AZA treatment of trophoblast cell lines. DISCUSSION RARRES1, 2 and 3 are expressed in the functional compartments of the human placenta and can be regulated by RA. We hypothesize that the epigenetic suppression of trophoblast RARRES1 and RARB expression and the upregulation of RARRES1 in PE trophoblast cells suggest an involvement of environmental factors (eg, maternal vitamin A intake) in the pathogenesis of this pregnancy complication.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a six-week-long exercise program using outdoor exercise equipment on fitness, insulin resistance and adipocytokines among Korean elderly. METHODS A total of 47 participants were randomized into one of the following three groups; control, resistance exercise or combined exercise (aerobic and resistance exercise). The resistance exercise group completed three resistance types of exercise. The combined exercise group completed five exercises, including three resistance types of exercise and two aerobic types of exercise. Participants' body composition, fitness level, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and adipocytokines were measured at baseline and at the end of six weeks. RESULTS After six weeks of exercise training, participants in the combined exercise group exhibited significant reduction in insulin, HOMA-IR and chemerin levels, while significant reduction was observed in HOMA-IR only in the resistance exercise group compared with the control group. Meanwhile, six weeks of exercise training, whether resistance exercise alone or combined, significantly improved upper body muscular strength/endurance and physical function compared to the control group. CONCLUSIONS Six weeks of combined exercise using outdoor exercise equipment was effective in improving fitness, HOMA-IR, circulating chemerin levels, and other known risk factors of chronic diseases.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) may be elevated in healthy men with systemic inflammation. We aimed to investigate the association between systemic inflammation markers and serum PSA in a healthy Korean population. MATERIAL AND METHODS A cohort of 20,151 healthy native Korean men without prostate disease between the ages of 40 and 65 years who underwent medical checkups were studied from January 2007 to December 2013. Serum total PSA and serum C-reactive protein concentrations, neutrophil, lymphocyte, and platelet counts were determined. The neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were calculated. We checked the correlation between systemic inflammation markers and PSA. RESULTS Data obtained from 18,800 healthy men were analyzed. The mean age of the study subjects was 50.72±7.62 years and the mean NLR was 1.764±0.804. Correlation analysis after adjustment for age and body mass index (BMI) revealed that neutrophil count (coefficient = 0.028, p value <0.001), and NLR (coefficient = 0.027, p value <0.001) correlated with PSA. Multivariate analysis using the full model revealed that age, neutrophil count and NLR were positively correlated with PSA (p<0.001, 0.001, and 0.043 respectively). Multivariate analysis using a stepwise model revealed that age, neutrophil count and NLR were positively correlated with PSA (p<0.001, 0.001, and 0.040, respectively) and BMI was negatively correlated with PSA (p<0.001). CONCLUSION Systemic inflammation markers are useful with a serum PSA in a healthy Korean population. NLR in particular is significantly associated with serum PSA.

Abstract
In a previous study, amphiphilic copolymer, polypeptide K237 (HTMYYHHYQHHL) and folic acid (FA) modified poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (K237/FA-PEG-PLGA) nanoparticles were developed and studied as a drug carrier. To further promote the clinical application of K237/FA-PEG-PLGA nanoparticles and provide guidance for future research, we need to examine their specific biodistribution in vivo. In this study, K237/FA-PEG-PLGA nanoparticles were effectively labeled by a direct method with Technetium-99m (99mTc) using stannous chloride as a reducing agent. The optimal stability of the labeled nanoparticles was determined by evaluating their radiochemical purity in serum, physiological saline, diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) and cysteine solutions. The affinity of ligands and receptors was elicited by cell binding and blocking experiments in KDR/folate receptor high expressing SKOV-3 ovarian cancer cells. The nanoparticles biodistribution was studied after intravenous administration in healthy mice xenografted with SKOV-3 cells. A higher percent injected dose per gram of tissue (% ID/g) was observed in liver, kidney, spleen, blood and tumor at 3 and 9 h post-injection. Scintigraphic images revealed that the radioactivity was mainly concentrated in tumor, liver, kidney and bladder; and in the heart, lung, and muscle was significantly lower at 3 h. The radioactivity distribution in the images is consistent with the in vivo biodistribution data. Our works demonstrated that K237/FA-PEG-PLGA nanoparticles have great potential as biodegradable drug carriers, especially for tumors expressing the folate and KDr receptor.
