Abstract
INTRODUCTION Laparotomy surgery, which involves making an incision in the abdominal cavity to treat serious abdominal disease and save the patient's life, causes significant deaths in both developed and developing countries, including Ethiopia. The number studies examining in-hospital mortality rates among individuals that undergone laparotomy surgery and associated risk factors is limited. OBJECTIVE To assess the magnitude of in-hospital mortality and its associated factors among patients undergone laparotomy at tertiary hospitals, West Oromia, Ethiopia, 2022. METHODS An institutional based retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted from January 1, 2017, to December 31, 2021. Data were collected using systematic random sampling and based on structured and pretested abstraction sheets from 548 medical records and patient register log. Data were checked for completeness and consistency, coded, imported using Epi-data version 4.6, cleaned and analyzed using SPSS version 25 software. Variables with p < 0.2 in the Bi-variable logistic regression analysis were included in the multivariate logistic regression analysis. The fit of the model was checked by the Hosmer‒Lemeshow test. Using the odds ratio adjusted to 95% CI and a p value of 0.05, statistical significance was declared. RESULTS A total of 512 patient charts were reviewed, and the response rate was 93.43%. The overall magnitude of in-hospital mortality was 7.42% [95% CI: 5.4-9.8]. American society of Anesthesiology physiological status greater than III [AOR = 7.64 (95% CI: 3.12-18.66)], systolic blood pressure less than 90 mmHg [AOR = 6.11 (95% CI: 1.98-18.80)], preoperative sepsis [AOR = 3.54 (95% CI: 1.53-8.19)], ICU admission [AOR = 4.75 (95% CI: 1.50-14.96)], and total hospital stay greater than 14 days [(AOR = 6.76 (95% CI: 2.50-18.26)] were significantly associated with mortality after laparotomy surgery. CONCUSSION In this study, overall in- hospital mortality was high. Early identification patient's American Society of Anesthesiologists physiological status and provision of early appropriate intervention, and pays special attention to patients admitted with low systolic blood pressure, preoperative sepsis, intensive care unit admission and prolonged hospital stay to improve patient outcomes after laparotomy surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes is a significant contributor to kidney failure, heart attack, strokes, lower limb amputation, blindness, and other complications that negatively impact health-related quality of life (HRQOL). This study assessed the HRQOL and clinical outcomes of patients with diabetes accessing healthcare in south-eastern Ghana. METHODS This was a hospital-based cross-sectional descriptive study conducted in the Ho Municipal and Ho Teaching Hospitals in Ghana among patients with type 2 diabetes who were seeking healthcare at both hospitals for at least 12 months. Systematic random sampling technique was used to select 310 respondents out of the total sample size of 326 patients with type 2 diabetes and data were collected using diabetes-39 questionnaire. The data were analysed using STATA 16.0. Socio-demographic and clinical variables were expressed as frequencies and percentages. Differences between proportions were tested using Chi-square to identify predictors of poor HRQOL and Pearson correlation for association. The p < 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS Out of 310 respondents, 171 (55.0%) had poor HRQOL. The predictors of poor HRQOL were age (p < 0.008), education (p < 0.028), employment (p < 0.001), residence (p < 0.01), duration of diabetes (p < 0.002), diabetes education (p < 0.001), BMI (p < 0.005), and glycaemic control (p < 0.001). Energy and mobility (63.2%), anxiety and worry (53.9%), and diabetes control (49.6%) dimensions were the most prevalent of poor HRQOL. Diabetes education, complications, being diabetic for 16 years and above, earning income, resident in rural area, being married, being pensioner and national Service Personnel, and diabetes comorbidities were significantly associated with HRQOL. CONCLUSIONS More than half of the respondents had poor HRQOL. Clinical and public health efforts should focus on effective control and screening measures for the individual patients and general population.

Abstract
Introduction the majority of studies in Ethiopia determine the prevalence of glycemic control employed by fasting blood sugar (FBS), which is impacted by a variety of factors. Hence, the purpose of this study was to assess the status of glycemic control using HbA1c and its correlates in patients with type 2 diabetes in Southwest Ethiopia. Methods a cross-sectional study was employed among 124 T2 diabetes mellitus (DM) patients at Jimma Medical Center (JMC), Southwest Ethiopia. HbA1c and FBS were estimated using the Cobas 6000 analyzer. The body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio were calculated as the standard formula. Data were analyzed by SPSS version 25. Logistic regression analysis was employed to identify independent risk factors associated with poor glycemic control of DM patients. Results males comprised 63.7% (n=79) of the total respondents. The mean age of aOR: 2.21, 95% CI 1.13, 4.34; p = 0.01f participants was 51.84 ± 11.6 years; 60.5% (n=75) of T2 DM patients were in poor glycemic control (HbA1c ≥ 7%). In multivariate logistic regression analysis, BMI of ≥ 30, (aOR: 2.21, 95% CI 1.13, 4.34) increased waist-to-hip ratio (aOR: 1.63, 95% CI 0.82, 2.18), high systolic blood pressure (aOR: 1.52, 95% CI 1.11, 6.23), high FBS (aOR: 1.61, 95% CI 1.00, 4.12), and longer duration of DM (aOR: 1.23, 95% CI 0.87, 1.88) were associated with poor glycemic control. Conclusion the level of poor glycemic control in the study population is high. Obesity and/or overweight, central obesity, systolic hypertension, and fasting blood sugar levels were all associated with poor glycemic control in T2 DM patients.

Abstract
Background The purpose of this study was to assess the status of glycaemic control and associated factors among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. Methods This was a hospital-based cross-sectional descriptive study of 326 patients with type 2 diabetes at the Ho Municipal and Teaching Hospitals. The adequate sample size was calculated using Yamane formula N/1 + Ne2, with 95 % confidence interval, 5 % margin of error and 10 % non-response rate and a sample size of 326 was determined. Using the sampling frame of patients chart, systematic random sampling technique was used to select the study participants. Glycaemic level was assessed using fasting blood glucose (FBG) readings. A poor glycaemic control was when an average of three months blood glucose level was above 130 mg/dl (7 mm/L). Data was analysed using STATA version 15.0. Results Out of 310 patients who participated in the study, more than two-thirds (76.1 %) had poor glycaemic control. Patients who use combination of oral medication and insulin (AOR = 3.67, 95 % CI: 1.34-8.74), patients with diabetes for 16 years or more (AOR = 4.67, 95 % CI: 2.44-9.29), patients who did not practised diabetes self-care activities (AOR = 4.32, 95 % CI: 2.82-9.31) and patients with complications were (AOR = 2.47, 95%CI: 1.45-8.66) more likely to have poor glycaemic control. Age, employment, diabetes education, comorbidities, diabetes self-care activities, treatment type, complications, resident and duration of diabetes were significantly associated with poor glycaemic control. Conclusion Based on this findings, teaching and counselling provided by nurses, physicians, dietitians and pharmacists should focus on improving adherence to diabetes self-care activities to attain good glycaemic control.

Abstract
Background Diabetes mellitus is the most common metabolic disorder in the pediatric population. Globally the incidence of diabetes increased from 11.3 million (95% UI 10.6-12.1) in 1990 to 22.9 million (21.1-25.4) in 2017, with a 102.9% increase and there was a 3% increase in diabetes mortality rates by age between 2000 and 2019. Objective This study aims to assess the pattern of initial presentation of pediatric diabetes mellitus, treatment outcome, and its predictors among pediatrics who attended service at selected public hospitals in southern Ethiopia from 2015 to 2019. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 422 randomly selected pediatrics from October 1st, 2021 to December 30, 2021, and participants were selected randomly from 8 randomly selected public hospitals in southern Ethiopia after proportional to client flow allocation of samples. Data was extracted from clients' charts using a data extraction checklist. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24, and logistic regression analysis were applied to determine the presence of an association between dependent and independent variables, and significance was declared at p-value <0.05. Results In this study, most (74.6%) of the pediatrics initially presented with Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). This study found that Two-thirds (67.1%) of the respondents in the study had a good treatment outcome. In this study residence, presenting signs and symptoms; poly symptoms and weight loss, history of hospitalization, and comorbidity were predictors of treatment outcome of pediatric diabetes mellitus. Conclusion Diabetes mellitus with Diabetic ketoacidosis is the predominant pattern of initial presentation in the study. The magnitude of poor treatment outcomes of diabetes mellitus among pediatrics in this study is high and unacceptable Residence, signs, and symptoms at initial presentation, history of hospitalization, and comorbidity were found to be significant independent predictors of treatment outcome of pediatric diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
Glycemic control is of paramount importance in care and management for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Poor glycemic control is a major health problem that greatly contributes to the development of diabetes related complications. This study aims to assess the prevalence of poor glycemic control and associated factors among outpatients with T2DM attending diabetes clinic at Amana Regional Referral Hospital in Dar-es-salaam, Tanzania from December 2021 to September 2022. A face to face interviewer semi-structured questionnaire was administered during data collection. Binary logistic regression under multivariable analysis was used to determine the independent predictors of poor glycemic control. A total of 248 patients with T2DM were included in the analysis with mean age of 59.8 ± 12.1 years. The mean fasting blood glucose was 166.9 ± 60.8 mg/dL. The prevalence of poor glycemic control was 66.1% (fasting blood glucose > 130 mg/dL or < 70 mg/dL). Failure to adhere to regular follow-up (AOR = 7.53, 95% CI = 2.34-19.73, p < 0.001) and alcoholism (AOR = 4.71, 95% CI = 1.08-20.59, p = 0.040) were the independent predictors of poor glycemic control. The prevalence of poor glycemic control observed in this study was significantly high. Emphasis should be placed on ensuring that patients have regular follow-up for their diabetes clinics and they should also continue modifying some of lifestyle behaviors including refraining from alcoholism, this can help them to have good glycemic control.

Abstract
Introduction Good glycemic control and preventing early complications are the ultimate targets of diabetes management, which depends on patients' adherence to regimens. Even though highly potent and effective medications have been developed and manufactured with astonishing advancement over the past few decades, excellent glycemic control has remained elusive. Objective This study aimed to assess the magnitude and factors associated with medication adherence among type 2 diabetes (T2D) patients on follow-up at Adama Hospital Medical College (AHMC) in East Ethiopia. Methods A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 245 T2D patients on follow-up at AHMC from March 1 to March 30, 2020. Medication adherence reporting scale-5 (MARS-5) was utilized to collect information regarding patients' medication adherence. The data were entered and analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) version 21. The level of significance was declared at a p-value of < .05. Results Of the 245 respondents, the proportion of respondents who adhere to diabetes medication was 29.4%, 95% CI [confidence interval] (23.7%-35.1%). After adjusting for khat chewing and adherence to blood glucose testing as confounding factors, being married (AOR [adjusted odds ratio] = 3.43, 95%CI [1.27-4.86]), government employee (AOR = 3.75, 95%CI [2.12-7.37]), no alcohol drinking (AOR = 2.25, 95%CI [1.32-3.45]), absence of comorbidity (AOR = 1.49, 95%CI [1.16-4.32]), and having diabetes health education at health institution (AOR = 3.43, 95%CI [1.27-4.86]) were the factors associated with good medication adherence. Conclusion The proportion of T2D patients who adhere to medication in the study area was remarkably low. The study also found that being married, government employee, no alcohol drinking, absence of comorbidity, and having diabetes health education at a health institution were the factors associated with good medication adherence. Therefore, imparting health education on the importance of diabetes medication adherence by health professionals at each follow-up visit should be considered. Besides, awareness creation programs regarding diabetes medication adherence should be considered using mass media (radio and television).

Abstract
The primary method for preventing health and health-related problems in diabetic people is glycemic control. Numerous studies have documented the importance of glycemic control and the factors that influence it. However, the results are dispersed. This study sought to identify the prevalence of poor glycemic control and associated factors in Ethiopia. Findings will be crucial to reduce the burden of poor glycemic control. Comprehensive search was performed from databases: PubMed, Global Health, CINAHL, IRIS, and FSTA. Gray literature sources were also explored. This document was prepared based on the PRISMA flowchart. The protocol is registered in PROSPERO (ID: CRD42022296583). STATA software was used for data analyses and I2 test with Cochrane Q statistics, and forest plot were used to verify heterogeneity. When the I2 value was higher than 50% and the p-value was 0.05, heterogeneity was deemed significant. To confirm publication bias, a funnel plot with an Egger's regression test was performed. The factors related to poor glycemic control were reported using pooled odds ratios (POR) and a 95% confidence interval. In this study, 46 papers totaling 15 457 people were used to calculate the pooled estimates. It was determined that 32.6% (95% CI: 28.3, 36.9) and 61.92% (95% CI: 57.92, 65.92) of the subjects, respectively, had good and poor glycemic control. Being male protected against poor glycemic control, while poor diet adherence, lack of exercise, poor adherence to anti-diabetic medications, and smoking increased the likelihood of poor glycemic control. Lack of formal education, no family history of diabetes, lack of glucometer for blood glucose monitoring, comorbidity, being overweight and prolonged length of stay with diabetes all contributed to poor glycemic control. Ethiopia had a fairly high rate of poor glycemic control. The main determinants are lifestyle factors. Therefore, it is important to focus on behavioral interventions.

Abstract
Background Glycemic control is vital to patient care, and it is still the most important treatment goal for reducing organ damage and other complications associated with diabetes. Physical activity is one of the factors that affects glycemic management. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to find, evaluate, and synthesize the best available information on the link between physical exercise and glycemic control in Ethiopian diabetes patients. Methods Pubmed, Science Direct, Google Scholar and African Journals Online were the databases searched. In addition, gray literature were explored. All papers chosen for inclusion in the review underwent a thorough critical appraisal utilizing the Joanna Briggs Institute's standardized critical appraisal instruments (JBI critical appraisal checklist-2017). For statistical analysis and descriptive synthesis, quantitative articles were combined. The Odds ratio and their 95% confidence intervals were generated. Papers that were of excellent quality but lacked the main outcome (physical activity) for meta-analysis were subjected to descriptive synthesis. Results The finding of this meta-analysis showed diabetes patients who were physically active had controlled their blood glucose levels by 2.4 times compared to their counter (Odds ratio = 2.40, 95% Confidence Interval = 1.57,3.69). The duration of disease was found to be the most commonly reported predictor for poor glycemic control followed by dietary habits, patients' sex and age. Conclusion Physical activity, which is a simple and inexpensive therapy for diabetes patients, can help them control their blood glucose levels. Patients with diabetes who have had it for a long time should be aware of the need of regular physical activity in maintaining blood glucose control.

Abstract
Purpose The main goal of managing diabetes is to achieve glycemic control. However, the glycemic level of most diabetic patients is shown to be poorly controlled mainly due to poor adherence to self-care practices. This study aims to assess the level of self-care practice and glycemic control among type 2 diabetes patients on follow up in a resource limited country. Methods A four-month prospective observational study was conducted among type 2 diabetes patients from February 1 to May 30, 2021. Data was collected using a data abstraction checklist and structured questionnaire. The data was entered into Epidata version 4.4.6 and analyzed with SPSS version 26. Glycemic control and its predictors were determined using binary logistic regression. P-value less than 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Results A total of 138 patients were included in the study. Nearly three-fourths (74.6%) of patients had poor glycemic control and the majority of patients had poor self-care practice. 78.3%, 98.6%, 96.4%, and 55.8% of patients had poor adherence to diet, exercise, self-monitoring of blood glucose, and medications respectively. Importantly, 85(79%), 102(75%), 99(74.4%), and 65(84.4%) patients with poor adherence to diet, physical activity, self-monitoring of blood glucose, and antidiabetic medications had poor glycemic control. On multivariate logistic regression, BMI (AOR 4.1, CI:1.20-14.11, p = 0.024) and drug adherence (AOR 3.08, CI:1.22-7.08, p = 0.017) were factors associated with poor glycemic control. Conclusions A higher proportion of patients had low-level of self-care practice and poor glycemic control. This highlights the need to improve patients' awareness about the importance of self-care practice to maintain good glycemic control and prevent adverse outcomes associated with the disease. Abstract
BACKGROUND The goals of glycemic management for patients with diabetes are to prevent or delay complications and optimize quality of life. However, in clinical practice, the recommended glycemic control target is difficult to achieve. Therefore, it is important to identify factors that influence the outcomes of glycemia to improve the quality of diabetic management. The study aimed to evaluate the level and factors associated with glycemic control among type 2 diabetic outpatients at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. METHODS A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted among systematically selected 325 patients with type 2 diabetes who attended diabetic clinics at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital. Pretested, structured, and interviewer-administered questionnaires were used to collect sociodemographic and diabetes-related information from March 1 to May 30, 2021. HbA1c was used to assess glycemic control according to the HbA1c target of < 7% ('good' control) as recommended by the American Diabetes Association for non-pregnant adults. The HbA1c level in the range of 7-8% was defined as 'inadequate' control and 'poor' at levels > 8%. Data entry and analysis were performed using SPSS v26. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify determinants of glycemic control. RESULTS The median level of HbA1c of the participants was 8.4% (IQR 6.8-10.1). And approximately three-quarters (73.8%) of the patients had inadequate and poor glycemic control (HbA1c ≥ 7%). Older age (AOR: 2.46, 95% CI: 1.28-6.01), DM duration of > 10 years (AOR: 3.15, 95% CI: 2.22-6.54), insulin therapy (AOR: 3.07, 95% CI: 2.10-6.12), poor diet compliance (AOR: 1.97, 95% CI: 1.28-3.52) and failure to set goals for glycemic control (AOR: 3.42, 95% CI: 2.17-5.97) were factors associated with inadequate and poor glycemic control. CONCLUSIONS The study revealed that a significant number of diabetic patients had inadequate and poor glycemic control levels. And this was associated with older age, longer duration of DM, insulin therapy, poor diet compliance, and failure to set control goals. This requires a focus on the associated factors identified and tailored management mechanisms to maintain good glycemic control.

Abstract
Purpose Diabetes mellitus (DM) is increasing at an alarming rate throughout the world and its complications of has become a major public health concern in all countries. Glycemic control is the most important predictor for DM related complications and deaths. However information on glycemic control remains scarce in Ethiopia including our study area. Hence, the aim of this study was to assess the magnitude and factors associated with poor glycemic control among diabetic outpatients at West Shewa public Hospitals, Ethiopia. Methods A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted from June 01 to September 30, 2020. Poor glycemic control was assessed by glycated hemoglobin level and a systematic random sampling method was employed to select participants. An interviewer-administered structured questionnaire was used and the data entered into Epi data version 3.1 and exported into SPSS version 22 for analysis. Logistic regression was conducted to identify predictors of poor glycemic control. A p-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results A total of 390 participants were involved in the study with mean age of 46.45 (±15.6) years. The study finding showed that the prevalence of poor glycemic control was found to be 63.8%. Age of ≥50 years (AOR = 2.77; 95% CI: 0.15,0.85), being single (AOR = 2.55; 95% CI: 0.179,.857), having high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (AOR = 3.44; 95% CI: 1.65, 7.12), being female gender (AOR = 2.4; 95%CI: 0.31,0.816), alcohol intake (AOR = 1.88; 95% CI: 1.135, 3.1) and presence of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (AOR = 1.24; 1.1,1.39) were associated with poor glycemic control. Conclusion About two-thirds of participants had poor blood glucose control. Increased age, high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, family history of diabetes, being single, being female, diabetic peripheral neuropathy and alcohol intake were associated with poor glycemic control. Hence, effort should be made towards reducing these factors among DM patients by the concerned body.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We determined the prevalence of poor glycemic control and associations with sociodemographics, comorbid conditions, and medication adherence among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) at a tertiary hospital in southwestern Nigeria. METHODS We conducted a retrospective observational study among 300 patients with T2DM using systematic random sampling. We used a semi-structured questionnaire to collect information on respondents' sociodemographic profile, lifestyle, comorbid conditions, and antidiabetic medications. Adherence was determined using the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale. Fasting blood samples were tested using a glycated hemoglobin marker. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with poor glycemic control. RESULTS Respondents' mean age was 61.9 ± 11.8 years. The prevalence of poor glycemic control was 40.0% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 34.4%-45.8%). The adjusted odds ratio (95% CI) for factors associated with poor glycemic control was 2.522 (1.402-4.647) for older age, 1.882 (1.021-3.467) for low income, 1.734 (1.013-3.401) for obesity, 2.014 (1.269-5.336) for non-initiation of insulin therapy, and 1.830 (1.045-3.206) for poor medication adherence. CONCLUSION Older age, lower income, obesity, non-initiation of insulin, and poor medication adherence were associated with poor glycemic control. These variables may help clinicians identify patients at high risk of poor glycemic control.

Abstract
BACKGROUND People living with diabetes are more vulnerable to drug-related problems due to the presence of multiple diseases. This study aimed to identify drug-related problems and contributing factors among diabetic patients. METHODS This study used a prospective observational study design. The study was conducted among diabetic patients during follow-up at Mettu Karl Referral Hospital from 15 April to 09 August 2019. The consecutive sampling was utilized to collect data. The identification of drug-related problems was performed using the Pharmaceutical Care Network Europe version 8.03. Following data collection, data were entered into Epidata manager version 4.4.2 and exported to the SPSS version 24.0 for analysis. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was done to identify predictors of drug-related problems. RESULTS A total of 330 people with diabetes were included in the study, among whom 279 (84.5%) had at least one drug-related problem. A total of 455 drug-related problems were identified. Effects of drug treatment not being optimal (52.7%) and untreated symptoms or indications (30.1%) were the most commonly identified drug-related problems. About 865 interventions were provided for identified drug-related problems and 79.8% was accepted. Diabetes duration [Formula: see text] years [AOR = 2.02; 95% CI (1.06, 3.85); p = 0.033] and the presence of comorbidity [AOR: 2.33; 95% CI (1.18, 4.60); p = 0.015] were factors identified as predictors of drug-related problems. CONCLUSION The present study identified that drug-related problems are common among diabetic patients. Effects of drug treatment not being optimal and untreated symptoms or indications were the most commonly identified drug-related problems. Longer diabetes duration and the presence of comorbidities were predictors of drug-related problems.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The goals of improving quality of life and increasing longevity are receiving growing amounts of attention. Body weight and lipid metabolism are closely related to various complications of diabetes. The aim of this study was to rank SGLT inhibitors according to their efficacy with regard to weight and evaluate the effect of SGLT inhibitors on lipid metabolism at 24 weeks of treatment. METHODS The Web of Science, PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Clinical Trials databases were electronically searched to collect randomized controlled trials involving patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus through June 2020. Two researchers independently screened and evaluated the selected studies and extracted the outcome indexes. ADDIS 1.16.5 and STATA 16 software were used to perform the network meta-analysis and draw the plots. RESULTS Ultimately, 36 studies were selected and included in this study. We found that all SGLT inhibitors were effective at reducing weight; canagliflozin was the most effective. SGLT inhibitors and placebo were not associated with significantly different serum cholesterol levels. SGLT inhibitors lowered serum triglyceride levels and increased serum high-density and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. SGLT inhibitors also reduced the level of alanine aminotransferase. CONCLUSIONS SGLT inhibitors can bring about weight loss in patients with T2DM and can also improve lipid metabolism. Therefore, patients with hyperlipidemia who have been unsuccessful at losing weight should consider taking SGLT inhibitors. In addition, SGLT inhibitors are hepatoprotective and appear to be safe for patients with mild to moderate liver dysfunction. TRIAL REGISTRATION CRD42020198516.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Poor glycemic control is a major public health issue among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and a significant risk factor for the progression of diabetic complications. This study aimed to assess the magnitude and contributing factors of poor glycemic control among type 2 diabetes patients on follow-up at Adama Hospital Medical College (AHMC) in East Ethiopia. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted among 245 type 2 diabetes patients on follow-up at AHMC from March 1 to 30, 2020. All type 2 diabetes patients on follow-up at AHMC and fulfilling the inclusion criteria were included in the study. The data were collected through face-to-face interviews using structured questionnaires and reviewing the patient chart. The data were entered and analyzed using SPSS version 21. The level of significance was declared at a p-value of <0.05. RESULTS Of the 245 type 2 diabetes patients included in the study, 157 (64.1%) had poor glycemic control. The factors associated with poor glycemic control were being male (AOR = 2.28, 95% CI [1.24-4.21]), not attending formal education (AOR = 3.12, 95% CI [1.53-6.35]), monthly income of <136 USD (AOR = 2.14, 95% CI [1.17-3.91]), overweight (AOR = 2.60, 95% CI [1.32-5.10]) and obesity (AOR = 3.44, 95% CI [1.44-8.21]), and chewing khat (AOR = 2.77, 95% CI [1.04-7.33]). CONCLUSION The proportion of poor glycemic control among type 2 diabetes patients at AHMC was remarkably high. Therefore, more effort should be taken to strengthening and disseminating health education programs for diabetes patients at each follow-up visit on the importance of achieving optimal body weight, avoiding khat chewing, and maintaining regular physical exercise to prevent and mitigate the complications resulting from poor glycemic control.

Logistic regression analysis was done to identify predictors of chronic complications of diabetes. RESULTS A total of 330 participants were included in this study. The mean age of participants was 49.9±14.2, and 156 (47.3%) were 41 to 60 years old. About 127 (38.5%) had one or more chronic complications. The predictors of chronic diabetes complications were resident in urban areas [AOR: 1.94; 95% CI: (1.17, 3.20); p = 0.010], duration of diabetes 10 years [AOR: 2.05, 95% CI: (1.21, 3.47); p = 0.007], hypertension [AOR: 4.19; 95% CI: (2.54, 6.91); p < 0.001] and poor glycemic control [AOR: 2.82; 95% CI: (1.53, 5.21); p = 0.001]. CONCLUSION Almost two-fifth of the study participants had chronic complications of diabetes. Residents in urban areas, longer duration of diabetes, hypertension and poor glycemic control were predictors of chronic diabetes complications. It is important to achieve good glycemic control and manage comorbid diseases like hypertension to minimize the risk of chronic diabetes complications.
