Nanogenerator-Based Self-Charging Energy Storage Devices

An Air-Rechargeable Zn Battery Enabled by Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Cathode

Self-charging power systems collecting energy harvesting technology and batteries are attracting extensive attention. To solve the disadvantages of the traditional integrated system, such as highly dependent on energy supply and complex structure, an air-rechargeable Zn battery based on MoS2/PANI cathode is reported. Benefited from the excellent conductivity desolvation shield of PANI, the MoS2/PANI cathode exhibits ultra-high capacity (304.98 mAh g-1 in N2 and 351.25 mAh g-1 in air). In particular, this battery has the ability to collect, convert and store energy simultaneously by an air-rechargeable process of the spontaneous redox reaction between the discharged cathode and O2 from air. The air-rechargeable Zn batteries display a high open-circuit voltage (1.15 V), an unforgettable discharge capacity (316.09 mAh g-1 and the air-rechargeable depth is 89.99%) and good air-recharging stability (291.22 mAh g-1 after 50 air recharging/galvanostatic current discharge cycle). Most importantly, both our quasi-solid zinc ion batteries and batteries modules have excellent performance and practicability. This work will provide a promising research direction for the material design and device assembly of the next-generation self-powered system.

Flexible Ag Microparticle/MXene-Based Film for Energy Harvesting

Ultra-thin flexible films have attracted wide attention because of their excellent ductility and potential versatility. In particular, the energy-harvesting films (EHFs) have become a research hotspot because of the indispensability of power source in various devices. However, the design and fabrication of such films that can capture or transform different types of energy from environments for multiple usages remains a challenge. Herein, the multifunctional flexible EHFs with effective electro-/photo-thermal abilities are proposed by successive spraying Ag microparticles and MXene suspension between on waterborne polyurethane films, supplemented by a hot-pressing. The optimal coherent film exhibits a high electrical conductivity (1.17×104 S m-1), excellent Joule heating performance (121.3 °C) at 2 V, and outstanding photo-thermal performance (66.2 °C within 70 s under 100 mW cm-1). In addition, the EHFs-based single-electrode triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) give short-circuit transferred charge of 38.9 nC, open circuit voltage of 114.7 V, and short circuit current of 0.82 μA. More interestingly, the output voltage of TENG can be further increased via constructing the double triboelectrification layers. The comprehensive ability for harvesting various energies of the EHFs promises their potential to satisfy the corresponding requirements.

All in One, Self-Powered Bionic Artificial Nerve Based on a Triboelectric Nanogenerator

Sensory and nerve systems play important role in mediating the interactions with the world. The pursuit of neuromorphic computing has inspired innovations in artificial sensory and nervous systems. Here, an all-in-one, tailorable artificial perception, and transmission nerve (APTN) was developed for mimicking the biological sensory and nervous ability to detect and transmit the location information of mechanical stimulation. The APTN shows excellent reliability with a single triboelectric electrode for the detection of multiple pixels, by employing a gradient thickness dielectric layer and a grid surface structure. The sliding mode is used on the APTN to eliminate the amplitude influence of output signal, such as force, interlayer distance. By tailoring the geometry, an L-shaped APTN is demonstrated for the application of single-electrode bionic artificial nerve for 2D detection. In addition, an APTN based prosthetic arm is also fabricated to biomimetically identify and transmit the stimuli location signal to pattern the feedback. With features of low-cost, easy installation, and good flexibility, the APTN renders as a promising artificial sensory and nervous system for artificial intelligence, human-machine interface, and robotics applications.

Fully Fabric-Based Triboelectric Nanogenerators as Self-Powered Human-Machine Interactive Keyboards

Combination flexible and stretchable textiles with self-powered sensors bring a novel insight into wearable functional electronics and cyber security in the era of Internet of Things. This work presents a highly flexible and self-powered fully fabric-based triboelectric nanogenerator (F-TENG) with sandwiched structure for biomechanical energy harvesting and real-time biometric authentication. The prepared F-TENG can power a digital watch by low-frequency motion and respond to the pressure change by the fall of leaves. A self-powered wearable keyboard (SPWK) is also fabricated by integrating large-area F-TENG sensor arrays, which not only can trace and record electrophysiological signals, but also can identify individuals' typing characteristics by means of the Haar wavelet. Based on these merits, the SPWK has promising applications in the realm of wearable electronics, self-powered sensors, cyber security, and artificial intelligences.

Waste Plastic Triboelectric Nanogenerators Using Recycled Plastic Bags for Power Generation

Tens of thousands of plastics produced by people have caused incalculable harm to the environment. At the same time, the consumption of energy is becoming more and more serious, and the use of fossil energy to generate electricity has caused further damage to the environment. It is a good way to recycle waste plastics and make energy collection and generation devices based on them. Here, a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) based entirely on waste plastic bags is proposed. Three types of TENGs, PA-PVC-TENG, PA-PE-TENG, and PVC-PE-TENG, were fabricated by selecting the most common PA, PVC, and PE plastic films as the triboelectric layer. The output performance was improved by gilding the back of the plastic films as a conductive electrode. Under different conditions, three different types of TENGs were tested. The PA-PVC-TENG was found to show the best output performance with an open-circuit voltage of 35.7 V, a short-circuit current of 5.85 μA, and a maximum output power density of 152.6 mW/m². After further integration with supercapacitors, the integrated system can drive multiple commercial LEDs, and it can be used as an antitheft device to achieve early warning. This study realizes the integration of a TENG and energy storage devices, and as a TENG is based entirely on waste plastic bags, it not only realizes the recycling of plastics but also further realizes power generation, which can alleviate energy consumption to some extent.

Highly Sensitive and Tunable Self-Powered UV Photodetectors Driven Jointly by p-n Junction and Ferroelectric Polarization

Ferroelectric (FE) materials are thought to be promising materials for self-powered ultraviolet (UV) photodetector applications because of their photovoltaic effects. However, FE-based photodetectors exhibited poor performance because of the weak photovoltaic effect of FE depolarization field (E_dp) on the separation of photo-generated carriers. In this work, self-powered photodetectors based on both E_dp and built-in electric field at the p-n junction (E_p-n) were designed to obtain enhanced device performance. A NiO/Pb_0.95La_0.05Zr_0.54Ti_0.46O₃ (PLZT) heterojunction-based device is constructed to take advantage of energy level alignments that favor electron extraction. The device exhibits a tunable performance upon varying the polarization direction of PLZT. The NiO/PLZT heterojunction-based device with the PLZT layer in the poling down state shows a higher responsivity [R = (1.8 ± 0.12) × 10^-4 A/W] and detectivity [D* = (3.69 ± 0.2) × 10⁹ Jones], a faster response speed (τ_r = 0.34 ± 0.03 s, τ_d = 0.36 ± 0.02 s), and a lower dark current [I_dark = (1.3 ± 0.19) × 10^-12 A] under zero bias than the PLZT-based device because of the synergistic effects of E_dp and E_p-n. Moreover, under weak-light illumination (0.1 mW/cm²), it exhibits even higher R [(6.3 ± 1.2) × 10^-4 A/W] and D* [(1.29 ± 0.26) × 10¹⁰ Jones] values, which surpass those of most previously reported FE-based self-powered photodetectors. Our work emphasizes the role of the coupling effect between E_p-n and E_dp in the photovoltaic process of NiO/PLZT heterojunction-based devices and provides an effective way to promote the self-powered UV photodetector applications.

Self-charging power system for distributed energy: beyond the energy storage unit

Power devices for the smart sensor networks of Internet of things (IoT) are required with minimum or even no maintenance due to their enormous quantities and widespread distribution. Self-charging power systems (SCPSs) refer to integrated energy devices with simultaneous energy harvesting, power management and effective energy storage capabilities, which may need no extra battery recharging and can sustainably drive sensors. Herein, we focus on the progress made in the field of nanogenerator-based SCPSs, which harvest mechanical energy using the Maxwell displacement current arising from the variation in the surface-polarized-charge-induced electrical field. Prototypes of different nanogenerator-based SCPSs will be overviewed. Finally, challenges and prospects in this field will be discussed.

A Review of Solar Energy Harvesting Electronic Textiles

An increased use in wearable, mobile, and electronic textile sensing devices has led to a desire to keep these devices continuously powered without the need for frequent recharging or bulky energy storage. To achieve this, many have proposed integrating energy harvesting capabilities into clothing: solar energy harvesting has been one of the most investigated avenues for this due to the abundance of solar energy and maturity of photovoltaic technologies. This review provides a comprehensive, contemporary, and accessible overview of electronic textiles that are capable of harvesting solar energy. The review focusses on the suitability of the textile-based energy harvesting devices for wearable applications. While multiple methods have been employed to integrate solar energy harvesting with textiles, there are only a few examples that have led to devices with textile properties.

Self-Chargeable Flexible Solid-State Supercapacitors for Wearable Electronics

Flexible supercapacitors (SCs) always face the charging issue when they are used in some special situations (e.g., wilderness island) that cannot provide electricity, which would limit the continuous energy supply for the attached wearable electronics. Herein, a self-chargeable flexible solid-state supercapacitor (FSSSC) was creatively constructed by sandwiching a piezoelectric polyvinyl alcohol/potassium hydroxide/barium titanate electrolyte between symmetric NiCo₂O₄@activated carbon cloth electrodes. By virtue of the efficient synergy of each component in the FSSSC, the device exhibits integrated merits with excellent flexibility, satisfactory electrochemical properties, and considerable self-charging capability through synchronously collecting and converting mechanical energy (e.g., repeated bending) into storable electrochemical energy in a persistent way. When the devices are serially connected and self-charged, they can be used to drive typical electronics with normal working. Such a unique material and device design enables the FSSSC with combined capabilities such as energy-harvesting and conversion and storage device for self-powered wearable electronics.

Natural and Eco-Friendly Materials for Triboelectric Energy Harvesting

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are promising electric energy harvesting devices as they can produce renewable clean energy using mechanical excitations from the environment. Several designs of triboelectric energy harvesters relying on biocompatible and eco-friendly natural materials have been introduced in recent years. Their ability to provide customizable self-powering for a wide range of applications, including biomedical devices, pressure and chemical sensors, and battery charging appliances, has been demonstrated. This review summarizes major advances already achieved in the field of triboelectric energy harvesting using biocompatible and eco-friendly natural materials. A rigorous, comparative, and critical analysis of preparation and testing methods is also presented. Electric power up to 14 mW was already achieved for the dry leaf/polyvinylidene fluoride-based TENG devices. These findings highlight the potential of eco-friendly self-powering systems and demonstrate the unique properties of the plants to generate electric energy for multiple applications.

A water-evaporation-induced self-charging hybrid power unit for application in the Internet of Things

A self-charging hybrid power unit has been developed by integrating a water-evaporation-induced nanogenerator with a flexible nano-patterned supercapacitor. The nanogenerator can harvest environmental thermal energy and mechanical energy through the water evaporation process, and the supercapacitor can be charged simultaneously. The former offers stable electrical power as output, whereas the Ppy-based supercapacitor shows a capacitance of 12.497 mF/cm² with 96.42% retention after 4,000 cycles. After filling the power unit with water as the fuel, it can be fully charged in about 20 min. The power unit can be flexibly integrated with electronic devices such as sensor nodes and wireless transmitters employing the Internet of Things. This new approach can offer new possibilities in continuous future operation of randomly distributed electronic devices incorporated in the Internet of Things.
