Abstract
The inherent benefits of aqueous Zn-ion batteries (ZIBs), such as environmental friendliness, affordability, and high theoretical capacity, render them promising candidates for energy storage systems. Nevertheless, the Zn anodes of ZIBs encounter severe challenges, including dendrite formation, hydrogen evolution reaction, corrosion, and surface passivation. These would result in the infeasibility of ZIBs in practical situations. To this end, artificial interfaces with functionalized materials are crafted to protect the Zn anode. They have the capability to modulate the zinc ion flux in proximity to the electrode surface and shield it from aqueous electrolytes by leveraging either size effects or charge effects. Considering metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with tunable pore size, chemical composition, and stable framework structures, they have emerged as effective materials for building artificial interfaces, prolonging the lifespan, and improving the unitization of Zn anode. In this review, the contributions of MOFs for protecting Zn anode, which mainly involves facilitating homogeneous nucleation, manipulating selective deposition, regulating ion and charge flux, accelerating Zn desolvation, and shielding against free water and anions are comprehensively summarized. Importantly, the future research trajectories of MOFs for the protection of the Zn anode are underscored, which may propose new perspectives on the practical Zn anode and endow the MOFs with high-value applications.

Abstract
Aqueous zinc-based batteries (AZBs) are promising energy storage solutions with remarkable safety, abundant Zn reserve, cost-effectiveness, and relatively high energy density. However, AZBs still face challenges such as anode dendrite formation that reduces cycling stability and limited cathode capacity. Recently, low-dimensional metal-organic frameworks (LD MOFs) and their derivatives have emerged as promising candidates for improving the electrochemical performance of AZBs owing to their unique morphologies, high structure tunability, high surface areas, and high porosity. However, clear guidelines for developing LD MOF-based materials for high-performance AZBs are scarce. In this review, the recent progress of LD MOF-based materials for AZBs is critically examined. The typical synthesis methods and structural design strategies for improving the electrochemical performance of LD MOF-based materials for AZBs are first introduced. The recent noteworthy research achievements are systematically discussed and categorized based on their applications in different AZB components, including cathodes, anodes, separators, and electrolytes. Finally, the limitations are addressed and the future perspectives are outlined for LD MOFs and their derivatives in AZB applications. This review provides clear guidance for designing high-performance LD MOF-based materials for advanced AZBs.

Abstract
Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are garnering substantial research interest in electric vehicles, energy storage systems, and portable electronics, primarily for the reason that the inexpensive cost, high theoretical specific capacity, and environmental sustainability of zinc metal anodes, which are an essential component to their design. Nonetheless, the progress of AZIBs is hindered by significant obstacles, such as the occurrence of anodic side reactions (SR) and the formation of zinc dendrites. Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based materials are being explored as promising alternatives owing to homogeneous porous structure and large specific surface areas. There has been a rare overview and discussion on strategies for protecting anodes using MOF-based materials. This review specifically aims to investigate cutting-edge strategies for the design of highly stable MOF-based anodes in AZIBs. Firstly, the mechanisms of dendrites and SR are summarized. Secondly, the recent advances in MOF-based anodic protection including those of pristine MOFs, MOF composites, and MOF derivatives are reviewed. Furthermore, the strategies involving MOF-based materials for zinc anode stabilization are presented, including the engineering of surface coatings, three-dimensional zinc structures, artificial solid electrolyte interfaces, separators, and electrolytes. Finally, the ongoing challenges and prospective directions for further enhancement of MOF-based anodic protection technologies in AZIBs are highlighted.

Abstract
Zinc anode deterioration in aqueous electrolytes, and Zn dendrite growth is a major concern in the operation of aqueous rechargeable Zn metal batteries (AZMBs). To tackle this, the replacement of aqueous electrolytes with a zinc hydrogel polymer electrolyte (ZHPE) is presented in this study. This method involves structural modifications of the ZHPE by phytic acid through an ultraviolet (UV) light-induced photopolymerization process. The high membrane flexibility, high ionic conductivity (0.085 S cm-1), improved zinc corrosion overpotential, and enhanced electrochemical stability value of ≈2.3 V versus Zn|Zn2+ show the great potential of ZHPE as an ideal gel electrolyte for rechargeable zinc metal hydrogel batteries (ZMHBs). This is the first time that the dominating effect of chelation of phytic acid with M2+ center over H-bonding with water is described to tune the gel electrolyte properties for battery applications. The ZHPE shows ultra-high stability over 360 h with a capacity of 0.50 mAh cm-2 with dendrite-free plating/stripping in Zn||Zn symmetric cell. The fabrication of the ZMHB with a high-voltage zinc hexacyanoferrate (ZHF) cathode shows a high-average voltage of ≈1.6 V and a comparable capacity output of 63 mAh g-1 at 0.10 A g-1 of the current rate validating the potential application of ZHPE.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are functional materials that are proving to be indispensable for the development of next-generation batteries. The porosity, crystallinity, and abundance of active sites in MOFs, which can be tuned by selecting the appropriate transition metal/organic linker combination, enable MOFs to meet the performance requirements for cathode materials in batteries. Recent studies on the use of MOFs in cathodes have verified their high durability, cyclability, and capacity thus demonstrating the huge potential of MOFs as high-performance cathode materials. However, to keep pace with the rapid growth of the battery industry, several challenges hindering the development of MOF-based cathode materials need to be overcome. This review analyzes current applications of MOFs to commercially available lithium-ion batteries as well as advanced batteries still in the research stage. This review provides a comprehensive outlook on the progress and potential of MOF cathodes in meeting the performance requirements of the future battery industry.

Abstract
2D conjugated metal-organic frameworks (2D c-MOFs) with large pore sizes and high surface areas are advantageous for adsorbing iodine species to enhance the electrochemical performance of aqueous dual-ion batteries (ADIBs). However, most of the reported 2D c-MOFs feature microporous structures, with few examples exhibiting mesoporous characteristics. Herein, we developed two mesoporous 2D c-MOFs, namely PA-TAPA-Cu-MOF and PA-PyTTA-Cu-MOF, using newly designed arylimide based multitopic catechol ligands (6OH-PA-TAPA and 8OH-PA-PyTTA). Notably, PA-TAPA-Cu-MOF exhibits the largest pore sizes (3.9 nm) among all reported 2D c-MOFs. Furthermore, we demonstrated that these 2D c-MOFs can serve as promising cathode host materials for polyiodides in ADIBs for the first time. The incorporation of triphenylamine moieties in PA-TAPA-Cu-MOF resulted in a higher specific capacity (423.4 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles at 1.0 A g-1) and superior cycling performance, retaining 96 % capacity over 1000 cycles at 10 A g-1 compared to PA-PyTTA-Cu-MOF. Our comparative analysis revealed that the increased number of N anchoring sites and larger pore size in PA-TAPA-Cu-MOF facilitate efficient anchoring and conversion of I3 -, as supported by spectroscopic electrochemistry and density functional theory calculations.

Abstract
While aqueous Zn-ion batteries (AZIBs) are widely considered as a promising energy storage system due to their merits of low cost, high specific capacity, and safety, the practical implementation has been hindered by the Zn dendrite growth and undesirable parasitic reactions. To address these issues, a unique hydrophobic-ion-conducting cetyltrimethylammonium bromide-intercalated Mg-Al-layered double-hydroxide protective layer was constructed on the Zn anode (OMALDH-Zn) to modulate the nucleation behavior and desolvation process. The hydrophobic cetyl group long chain can inhibit the hydrogen evolution reaction and Zn corrosion by repelling water molecules from the anode surface and reducing the desolvation activation energy. Meanwhile, the Mg-Al LDH with abundant zincophilic active sites can modulate the Zn2+ ion flux, enabling the dendrite-free Zn deposition. Benefiting from this interfacial synergy, a long cycle life (>2300 h) with low and stable overpotential (<18 mV at 1 mA cm-2) and excellent Coulombic efficiency (99.4%) for symmetrical and asymmetrical batteries were achieved. More impressively, excellent rate performance and long cyclic stability have been realized by OMALDH-Zn//MnO2 batteries in both coin-type and pouch-type devices. This low-cost, simple, and high-efficiency coordinated modulation method provides a reliable strategy for the practical application of AZIBs.

Zn-ion batteries (ZIBs) have gathered unprecedented interest recently benefiting from their intrinsic safety, affordability, and environmental benignity. Nevertheless, their practical implementation is hampered by low rate performance, inferior Zn2+ diffusion kinetics, and undesired parasitic reactions. Innovative solutions are put forth to address these issues by optimizing the electrodes, separators, electrolytes, and interfaces. Remarkably, polymers with inherent properties of low-density, high processability, structural flexibility, and superior stability show great promising in tackling the challenges. Herein, the recent progress in the synthesis and customization of functional polymers in aqueous ZIBs is outlined. The recent implementations of polymers into each component are summarized, with a focus on the inherent mechanisms underlying their unique functions. The challenges of incorporating polymers into practical ZIBs are also discussed and possible solutions to circumvent them are proposed. It is hoped that such a deep analysis could accelerate the design of polymer-derived approaches to boost the performance of ZIBs and other aqueous battery systems as they share similarities in many aspects.

Abstract
In view of the advantages of low cost, environmental sustainability, and high safety, aqueous Zn-ion batteries (AZIBs) are widely expected to hold significant promise and increasingly infiltrate various applications in the near future. The development of AZIBs closely relates to the properties of cathode materials, which depend on their structures and corresponding dynamic evolution processes. Synchrotron radiation light sources, with their rich advanced experimental methods, serve as a comprehensive characterization platform capable of elucidating the intricate microstructure of cathode materials for AZIBs. In this review, we initially examine available cathode materials and discuss effective strategies for structural regulation to boost the storage capability of Zn2+. We then explore the synchrotron radiation techniques for investigating the microstructure of the designed materials, particularly through in situ synchrotron radiation techniques that can track the dynamic evolution process of the structures. Finally, the summary and future prospects for the further development of cathode materials of AZIBs and advanced synchrotron radiation techniques are discussed.

Abstract
Transition metal selenides (TMSs) have great potential as cathode materials for alkaline Zn batteries (AZBs) owing to their high theoretical capacity and metallic conductivity. However, achieving a high specific capacity remains a formidable challenge due to the low structural stability and sluggish reaction kinetics of single-phase TMS. Herein, a facile method for fabricating a robust CoSe2@Ni3Se4@Ni(OH)2 superstructure nanoarray (CNSNA) as an AZB cathode is presented. The sophisticated design enables structural stability and abundant active surface sites for efficient charge storage. Furthermore, the redox mediator K3[Fe(CN)6] is employed to expedite the reaction kinetics and introduce supplementary redox reactions, further enhancing the charge storage capability. Consequently, the CNSNA electrode delivers an exceptional specific capacitance (609.08 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1), surpassing all previously reported selenide-based materials. High-rate capability (239.37 mAh g-1 at 20 A g-1) and long cycling stability have also been achieved. The comprehensive charge storage mechanism studies confirmed the structural integrity, kinetic improvement, and high reactivity of the CNSNA superstructure. Moreover, the corresponding AZB based on CNSNA demonstrates an extraordinarily high energy density of 516.58 Wh kg-1. The work offers guidance in the construction of superstructure-based TMS electrode materials, paving the way for the development of high-performance AZBs.

Abstract
The practical application of rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) has been severely hindered by detrimental dendrite growth, uncontrollable hydrogen evolution, and unfavorable side reactions occurring at the Zn metal anode. Here, we applied a Prussian blue analogue (PBA) material K2Zn3(Fe(CN)6)2 as an artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), by which the plentiful -C≡N- ligands at the surface and the large channels in the open framework structure can operate as a highly zincophilic moderator and ion sieve, inducing fast and uniform nucleation and deposition of Zn. Additionally, the dense interface effectively prevents water molecules from approaching the Zn surface, thereby inhibiting the hydrogen-evolution-resultant side reactions and corrosion. The highly reversible Zn plating/stripping is evidenced by an elevated Coulombic efficiency of 99.87% over 600 cycles in a Zn/Cu cell and a prolonged lifetime of 860 h at 5 mA cm-2, 2 mAh cm-2 in a Zn/Zn symmetric cell. Furthermore, the PBA-coated Zn anode ensures the excellent rate and cycling performance of an α-MnO2/Zn full cell. This work provides a simple and effective solution for the improvement of the Zn anode, advancing the commercialization of aqueous ZIBs.

Abstract
Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have been considered as alternative stationary energy storage systems, but the dendrite and corrosion issues of Zn anodes hinder their practical applications. Here we report a series of two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with Zr12 clusters, which act as artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layers to prevent dendrites and corrosion of Zn anodes. The Zr12-based 2D MOF layers were formed by incubating 3D layer-pillared Zr-MOFs in ZnSO4 aqueous electrolytes, which replaced the pillar ligands with terminal SO42-. Furthermore, the pore sizes of Zr12-based 2D MOF layers were systematically tuned, leading to optimized Zn2+ conduction properties and protective performance for Zn anodes. In contrast to the traditional 2D-MOFs with Zr6 clusters, Zr12-based 2D MOF layers as artificial SEI significantly reduced the polarization and increased the stability of Zn anodes in MOF@Zn||MOF@Zn symmetric cells and MOF@Zn||MnO2 full cells. In situ experiments and DFT computations reveal that the enhanced cell performance is attributed to the unique Zr12-based layered structure with intrinsic pores to allow fast Zn2+ diffusion, surface Zr-SO4 zincophilic sites to induce uniform Zn deposition, and inhibited hydrogen evolution by 2D MOF Zr12 layers.

Abstract
Aqueous zinc-ion batteries have attracted a continually increasing level of interest for large-scale energy storage because they are highly safe and have high energy density and abundant reserves. However, Zn anodes face significant challenges such as severe dendrite growth and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). We here propose an efficient Zn2+ sieve strategy for modulating the anode chemistry using two-dimensional NH2-MIL-125 (Ti) metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets. Theoretical investigations reveal the crucial role of the Ti MOF in regulating Zn2+ solvation structures for fast diffusion and uniform deposition and decreasing HER reactivity. The structure of the nanosheets enables abundant accessible desolvation sites and shortened ionic pathways. As a result, the MOF nanosheet-protected Zn anode exhibited greatly improved cycling stability in both symmetric cells and full cells. Operando optical monitoring and postmortem analysis revealed effective suppression of dendrite growth and HER by Ti MOF nanosheets. This anti-HER MOF-enabled Zn2+ sieve strategy provides a viable Zn anode and provides new insights for optimizing aqueous batteries.

Abstract
Aqueous rechargeable battery has been an intense topic of research recently due to the significant safety issues of conventional Li-ion batteries (LIBs). Amongst the various candidates of aqueous batteries, aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) hold great promise as a next generation safe energy storage device due to its low cost, abundance in nature, low toxicity, environmental friendliness, low redox potential, and high theoretical capacity. Yet, the promise has not been realized due to their limitations, such as lower capacity compared to traditional LIB, dendrite growth, detrimental degradation of electrode materials structure as ions intercalate/de-intercalate, and gas evolution/corrosion at the electrodes, which remains a significant challenge. To address the challenges, various 2D materials with different physiochemical characteristics have been utilized. This review explores fundamental physiochemical characteristics of widely used 2D materials in AZIBs, including graphene, MoS2, MXenes, 2D metal organic framework, 2D covalent organic framework, and 2D transition metal oxides, and how their characteristics have been utilized or modified to address the challenges in AZIBs. The review also provides insights and perspectives on how 2D materials can help to realize the full potential of AZIBs for next-generation safe and reliable energy storage devices.

Abstract
Aqueous Zn-Mn battery has been considered as the most promising scalable energy-storage system due to its intrinsic safety and especially ultralow cost. However, the traditional Zn-Mn battery mainly using manganese oxides as cathode shows low voltage and suffers from dissolution/disproportionation of the cathode during cycling. Herein, for the first time, a high-voltage and long-cycle Zn-Mn battery based on a highly reversible organic coordination manganese complex cathode (Manganese polyacrylate, PAL-Mn) was constructed. Benefiting from the insoluble carboxylate ligand of PAL-Mn that can suppress shuttle effect and disproportionationation reaction of Mn3+ in a mild electrolyte, Mn3+ /Mn2+ reaction in coordination state is realized, which not only offers a high discharge voltage of 1.67 V but also exhibits excellent cyclability (100 % capacity retention, after 4000 cycles). High voltage reaction endows the Zn-Mn battery high specific energy (600 Wh kg-1 at 0.2 A g-1 ), indicating a bright application prospect. The strategy of introducing carboxylate ligands in Zn-Mn battery to harness high-voltage reaction of Mn3+ /Mn2+ well broadens the research of high-voltage Zn-Mn batteries under mild electrolyte conditions.

Abstract
HYPOTHESIS Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have received considerable attention owing to their safety, low cost, and environmental benignity. However, the side reactions of hydrogen evolution revolution and Zn dendrite growth reduce the Coulombic efficiency and life span of AZIBs. To address these issues, we designed an artificial protective layer of a Te-hybridized core-shell zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF). EXPERIMENTS A core-shell structure of ZIF-8@ZIF-67 was first developed as a protecting layer on the Zn anode. To improve the poor conductivity of ZIF and its affinity for Zn, the core-shell structure was hybridized with zincophilic Te to increase the surface area and reduce the charge-transfer resistance. FINDINGS By incorporating metallic Te into ZIF-8 and ZIF-67, the nucleation potential and charge-transfer resistance were significantly reduced, enhancing the ion reaction kinetics and electron migration. Benefiting from the Te-hybridized ZIF-8@ZIF-67-derived nitrogen-doped porous carbon (Te-hybridized ZIF-8@ZIF-67/NC) layer, a full cell of Zn coated with Te-hybridized ZIF-8@ZIF-67/NC//MnO2 exhibited an excellent rate performance of 214 mAh g-1 at an ultrahigh current density of 10 A g-1 and ultralong cycle life (3200 cycles) without the formation of Zn dendrites.

Abstract
Widespread interest has been generated by aqueous zinc batteries (AZIBs), which have excellent theoretical capacities (820 mA h g-1), a low redox potential (-0.76 V vs SHE of Zn metal), and high security. Suitable cathodes for constructing high performance AZIBs are of great signification. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with adjustable structure via metals and organic units show great potential in AZIBs. In this work, ZnMn-Squaric acid (ZnMn-SQ) was synthesized using squaric acid through coprecipitation and served as the cathode for AZIBs. The ZnMn-SQ electrode demonstrated a high capacity of 489.1 mA h g-1 at 0.2 A g-1. Meanwhile, ZnMn-SQ can obtain 80.7 mA h g-1 after 1300 cycles, showing an outstanding long cycle life. More importantly, ex situ characterizations of XRD, XPS, and FT-IR revealed that ZnMn-SQ undergoes a structural transformation from the initial ZnMn-SQ framework to manganese oxide accompanied by Zn-SQ and then reduced to MnOOH, ZnMn2O4, and Zn4SO4(OH)6·5H2O (ZHS) in subsequent cycles. In addition, a modified zinc anode using cubic porous Zn-SQ-3d was used to construct ZnMn-SQ // Zn-SQ-3d@Zn(Zn-SQ-3d-coated Zn) high performance AZIBs, the capacity of which reaches 171.3 mA h g-1 at 1 A g-1 after 660 cycles. This work provided chances for constructing high-performance zinc ion batteries using MOF compounds.

Abstract
Metallic zinc electrode with a high theoretical capacity of 820 mAh g-1 is highly considered as a promising candidate for next-generation rechargeable batteries. However, the unavoidable hydrogen evolution, uncontrolled dendrite growth, and severe passivation reaction badly hinder its practical implementations. Herein, a robust polymer-alloy artificial protective layer is designed to realize dendrite-free Zn metal anode by the integration of zincophilic SnSb nanoparticles with Nafion. In comparison to the bare Zn electrode, the Nafion-SnSb coated Zn (NFSS@Zn) electrode exhibits lower nucleation energy barrier, more uniform electric field distribution and stronger anti-corrosion capability, thus availably suppressing the Zn dendrite growth and interfacial side reactions. As a consequence, the NFSS@Zn electrode exhibits a long cycle life over 1500 h at 1 mA cm-2 with an ultra-low voltage hysteresis (25 mV). Meanwhile, when paired with a MnO2 cathode, the as-prepared full cell also demonstrates stable performance for 1000 cycles at 3 A g-1 . This work provides an inspired approach to boost the performance of Zn anodes.

Abstract
In this work, a functional covalent gel material is developed to resolve the severe dendritic growth and hydrogen evolution reaction toward Zn/electrolyte interface in aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs). A covalent gel layer with superior durability forms homogeneously on the surface of Zn foil. The covalent gel with triazole functional groups can uniformize the transport of Zn2+ due to the interactions between Zn2+ ions and the triazole groups in the covalent gel. As a consequence, the symmetrical battery with triazole covalent gel maintains stable Zn plating/stripping for over 3000 h at 1 mA cm-2 and 1 mAh cm-2 , and the full cell combined with a V2 O5 cathode operates steadily and continuously for at least 1800 cycles at 5 A g-1 with a capacity retention rate of 67.0%. This work provides a train of thought to develop stable covalent gels for the protection of zinc anode toward high-performance ZIBs.

Abstract
The preparation of electroactive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for applications of supercapacitors and batteries has received much attention and remarkable progress during the past few years. MOF-based materials including pristine MOFs, hybrid MOFs or MOF composites, and MOF derivatives are well designed by a combination of organic linkers (e.g., carboxylic acids, conjugated aromatic phenols/thiols, conjugated aromatic amines, and N-heterocyclic donors) and metal salts to construct predictable structures with appropriate properties. This review will focus on construction strategies of pristine MOFs and hybrid MOFs as anodes, cathodes, separators, and electrolytes in supercapacitors and batteries. Descriptions and discussions follow categories of electrochemical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs), pseudocapacitors (PSCs), and hybrid supercapacitors (HSCs) for supercapacitors. In contrast, Li-ion batteries (LIBs), Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs), Lithium-oxygen batteries (LOBs), Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), Sodium-sulfur batteries (SSBs), Zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs), Zinc-air batteries (ZABs), Aluminum-sulfur batteries (ASBs), and others (e.g., LiSe, NiZn, H+ , alkaline, organic, and redox flow batteries) are categorized for batteries.

Abstract
Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are promising for large-scale energy storage systems due to their high safety, large capacity, cost-effectiveness, and environmental friendliness. However, their commercialization is currently hindered by several challenging issues, including cathode degradation and zinc dendrite growth. Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives have gained significant attention and are widely used in AZIBs due to their highly porous structures, large specific surface area, and ability to design frameworks for Zn2+ shuttle. Based on preceding contributions, this review aims to generalize two design principles for MOF-based materials in AZIBs: cathode preparation and anode protection. For cathode preparation, we mainly introduce novel MOF-based electrode materials such as pure MOFs, porous carbon materials, metal oxides, and their compounds, focusing on the analysis of the specific capacity of AZIBs. For anode protection, we systematically analyze MOF-based materials used as 3D Zn architecture, solid electrolyte interfaces, novel separators, and solid-state electrolytes, highlighting the improvement in the cyclic stability of Zn anodes. Finally, we propose the future development of MOF-based materials in AZIBs. Our work can give some clues for raising the practical application level of aqueous ZIBs.

Abstract
The agglomeration of graphene sheets and undesired pore size distribution usually lead to unsatisfactory electrochemical properties of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) film electrodes. Herein, crumpled exfoliated graphene (EG) sheets are adopted as the microstructure-regulating agent to tune the morphology and micro-/mesopore amounts with the aim of increasing active surface sites and ion transportation paths in electrodes. With the optimum ratio between EG and GO, the resulting 75%-EG/RGO shows significantly improved specific gravimetric capacitance (Cs) and rate capability when compared with pure RGO electrodes in a symmetrical supercapacitor system. Moreover, when coupling the 75%-EG/RGO cathode with a Zn anode to form a Zn ion hybrid supercapacitor (ZHS), the 75%-EG/RGO exhibits a much higher Cs of 327.39 F g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 and can maintain 91.7% capacitance after 8000 cycles. Systematic ex situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) measurements reveal that the charge storage mechanism is based on both reversible physical adsorption and dual ion uptake. Furthermore, the quasi-solid-state flexible ZHS also presents high capacitive performance and can maintain ∼100% capacitance under various bending states, demonstrating potential application in wearable electronics. This strategy opens up a new path for constructing high-performance graphene film electrodes.

Abstract
A two-dimensional MXene (Ta4C3) was innovatively used herein to modulate the space group and electronic properties of vanadium oxides, and the MXene/metal-organic framework (MOF) derivative VO2(B)@Ta4C3 with 3D network cross-linking was prepared, which was then employed as a cathode to improve the performance of aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs). A novel method combining HCl/LiF and hydrothermal treatments was used to etch Ta4AlC3 to obtain a large amount of accordion-like Ta4C3, and the V-MOF was then hydrothermally grown on the surface of the stripped Ta4C3 MXene. During the annealing process of V-MOF@Ta4C3, the addition of Ta4C3 MXene liberates the V-MOF from agglomerative stacking, allowing it to show additional active sites. More significantly, Ta4C3 prevents the V-MOF in the composite structure from converting into V2O5 of space group Pmmn but into VO2(B) of space group C2/m after annealing. A considerable advantage of VO2(B) for Zn2+ intercalation is provided by the negligible structural transformation during the intercalation process and the special tunnel transport channels, which have an enormous area (0.82 nm2 along the b axis). According to first-principles calculations, there is a strong interfacial interaction between VO2(B) and Ta4C3, which deliver remarkable electrochemical activity and kinetic performances for the storage of Zn2+. Therefore, the ZIBs prepared with the VO2(B)@Ta4C3 cathode material exhibit an ultra-high capacity of 437 mA h·g-1 at 0.1 A·g-1 while showing good cycle performance and dynamic performance. This study will offer a fresh approach and a reference for creating metal oxide/MXene composite structures.

Abstract
Aqueous zinc-manganese (Zn-Mn) batteries have promising potential in large-scale energy storage applications since they are highly safe, environment-friendly, and low-cost. However, the practicality of Mn-based materials is plagued by their structural collapse and uncertain energy storage mechanism upon cycling. Herein, this work designs an amorphous manganese borate (a-MnBOx ) material via disordered coordination to alleviate the above issues and improve the electrochemical performance of Zn-Mn batteries. The unique physicochemical characteristic of a-MnBOx enables the inner a-MnBOx to serve as a robust framework in the initial energy storage process. Additionally, the amorphous manganese dioxide, amorphous Znx MnO(OH)2 , and Zn4 SO4 (OH)6 ·4H2 O active components form on the surface of a-MnBOx during the charge/discharge process. The detailed in situ/ex situ characterization demonstrates that the heterostructure of the inner a-MnBOx and surface multicomponent phases endows two energy storage modes (Zn2+ /H+ intercalation/deintercalation process and reversible conversion mechanism between the Znx MnO(OH)2 and Zn4 SO4 (OH)6 ·4H2 O) phases). Therefore, the obtained Zn//a-MnBOx battery exhibits a high specific capacity of 360.4 mAh g-1 , a high energy density of 484.2 Wh kg-1 , and impressive cycling stability (97.0% capacity retention after 10 000 cycles). This finding on a-MnBOx with a dual-energy storage mechanism provides new opportunities for developing high-performance aqueous Zn-Mn batteries.

Abstract
Manganese-based oxides are common cathode materials for aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) because of their great capacity and high working voltage. However, the sharp decline of capacity caused by the dissolution of manganese-based cathode materials and the low-rate performance restrict their development. To address these problems, unique core-shell structured Mn2O3@ZnMn2O4/C hollow microspheres are reported as an ideal cathode material for AZIBs. Benefiting from the hollow structure, the zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-derived carbon and ZnMn2O4. Its application in AZIBs as the cathode demonstrates its satisfactory rate performance, high cycle stability, and excellent reversibility. Its high reversible capacity is remarkable, which reaches its maximum of 289.9 mA h g-1 at 200 mA g-1 and maintains a capacity of 203.5 mA h g-1 after cycling for 700 times at 1000 mA g-1. These excellent performances indicate that this material is a potential cathode material of AZIBs.

Abstract
Zn ion capacitors (ZICs) composed of a carbon-based cathode and a Zn anode are one of the most promising energy storage devices due to their inherent safety and high-power output. However, their poor cycling stability originating from the Zn dendrites' formation and low energy density limited by insufficient activated carbon properties remain major challenges for development of high-performance ZICs. Hence, we constructed a facile and effective strategy to alleviate "edge effects" and suppress Zn dendrites by growing ZnO nanowire arrays on Zn foil (ZnO@Zn) using a horizontally potentiostatic anodizing technique. The electrochemical characterizations and in situ optical microscopy observation revealed that the introduction of ZnO nanowire arrays can significantly suppress the growth of Zn dendrites and enhance the cycling stability of the Zn anode. The superfine and interlaced ZnO nanowire arrays provide uniform nucleation sites and high electrical conductivity for the Zn metal anode, reducing the local current density and promoting the rapid diffusion and migration of Zn ions on the Zn anode surface. As a result, the ZnO@Zn electrode has a very low nucleation overpotential and excellent cycle stability, far superior to the bare Zn anode. Furthermore, a ZnO@Zn//NPHC ZIC assembled with an N, P-codoped hard carbon (NPHC) cathode delivers a high specific capacity of 110.3 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 and achieves outstanding cycling stability with 90% capacity retention together with ∼100% Coulombic efficiency after 20000 cycles.

Abstract
Rechargeable organic multivalent metal-ion batteries (MMIBs) have attracted a surge of interest as promising alternatives for large-scale energy storage applications because they can combine the advantages of both organic electrodes and multivalent metal-ion batteries. However, the development of organic MMIBs is hampered by many factors, which mean they lag far behind organic alkali-metal- (e.g., Li-, Na-, and K-) ion batteries. Herein, the challenges that are specifically faced by organic MMIBs are analyzed and the strategies that can probably solve such challenges are then discussed. As a special challenge that organic MMIBs are facing, the charge-storage mechanism is particularly underlined to deeply understand the structure-property relationships for guiding the future design of high-performance organic electrodes for MMIBs. The perspectives are thereby elaborated in this review with the outlook of practical applications of organic MMIBs.

Abstract
Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have drawn the attention of numerous researchers owing to their high safety and cost-effectiveness. However, the dendrite growth and side reactions of the zinc (Zn) anodes limit their further practical applications. Herein, a porous amorphous silicon nitride protective layer with high zincophobicity is constructed on the Zn anode surface, which can guide the uniform stripping/plating of Zn2+ underneath the protective layer through its isotropic Zn affinity to alleviate the growth of dendrites and by-products. As a result, the amorphous silicon nitride-protected Zn anode can maintain a stable Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 98.8% and low voltage hysteresis for 710 cycles in the half cell. The full cell with the as-prepared Zn anode can deliver excellent electrochemical performances (89.0% capacity retention and 144.4 mAh g-1 discharge capacity after 1000 cycles at 4 A g-1 ). This work reveals the key role of uniform metal affinity induced by the amorphous materials in the interface modification of metal anodes, which is instructive for the design of stable metal anodes.

Abstract
Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are one of the promising energy storage systems, which consist of electrode materials, electrolyte, and separator. The first two have been significantly received ample development, while the prominent role of the separators in manipulating the stability of the electrode has not attracted sufficient attention. In this work, a separator (UiO-66-GF) modified by Zr-based metal organic framework for robust AZIBs is proposed. UiO-66-GF effectively enhances the transport ability of charge carriers and demonstrates preferential orientation of (002) crystal plane, which is favorable for corrosion resistance and dendrite-free zinc deposition. Consequently, Zn|UiO-66-GF-2.2|Zn cells exhibit highly reversible plating/stripping behavior with long cycle life over 1650 h at 2.0 mA cm-2, and Zn|UiO-66-GF-2.2|MnO2 cells show excellent long-term stability with capacity retention of 85% after 1000 cycles. The reasonable design and application of multifunctional metal organic frameworks modified separators provide useful guidance for constructing durable AZIBs.

Abstract
Iodine is considered to have broad application prospects in the field of electrochemical energy storage. However, the high solubility of I3- severely hampers its practical application, and the lack of research on the anchoring mechanism of I3- has seriously hindered the development of advanced cathode materials for iodine batteries. Herein, based on the molecular orbital theory, we studied the charge-transfer interaction between the acceptor of I3- with a σ* empty antibonding orbital and the donor of pyrimidine nitrogen with lone-pair electrons, which is proved by the results of UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The prepared dual-ion battery (DIB) exhibits a high voltage platform of 1.2 V, a remarkable discharge-specific capacity of up to 207 mAh g-1, and an energy density of 233 Wh kg-1 at a current density of 5 A g-1, as well as outstanding cycle stability (operating stably for 5000 cycles) with a high Coulombic efficiency of 97%, demonstrating excellent electrochemical performance and a promising prospect in stationary energy storage.

Abstract
Aqueous Zn (zinc) metal batteries have gotten a lot of interest and research because of their great volumetric capacity, low production cost, and high use safety. However, the coulombic efficiency of the Zn metal anode is low due to Zn dendrites formed during the charging and discharging processes of the battery, and the corrosion problem of the Zn anode in the electrolyte also reduces the battery's cycling stability and hinders its practical application. In this paper, InF3 has been used to decorate the surface of Zn foil, and In (indium) and ZnF2 coatings have been introduced to the surface of metal Zn simultaneously. After 1400 h of plating and stripping cycles, a symmetrical battery assembled from the modified Zn foil can still maintain a low voltage hysteresis of 30 mV. The Zn-ion capacitor assembled by the InF3-modified Zn foil (Zn@In&ZnF2) and activated carbon delivers an energy density of 33.5 Wh kg-1 and a power density of 1608 W kg-1 at a current density of 2 A g-1 and can still maintain almost 100% capacity after 10,000 cycles. This work is helpful to improve the cycling stability and the corrosion problem of aqueous Zn-based batteries.

Abstract
In recent years, rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have shown extraordinary potential due to their safety, nontoxicity, sustainable zinc resources, and low price. However, the lack of suitable cathode materials hinders the development of ZIBs. Recently, layered phosphates have been widely used as cathode materials. As one typical phosphate cathode, vanadium oxyphosphate (VOPO4) has inherently low electronic conductivity and structural dissolution in electrochemical reactions, limiting its development. To solve these problems, VOPO4/C is prepared by combining multifunctional carbon material with a VOPO4 interlayer and an external surface, which not only improves the electronic conductivity of the composite material but also effectively inhibits the dissolution of VOPO4 in the electrolyte. As a result, the prepared VOPO4/C could deliver a reversible capacity of 140 mA h g-1 at a current density of 100 mA g-1. Furthermore, the rate performance of the VOPO4/C composite has also been improved significantly. In the process of charging and discharging, zinc ions in the composite show perfect intercalate and deintercalate performance.

Abstract
The burgeoning Li-ion battery is regarded as a powerful energy storage system by virtue of its high energy density. However, inescapable issues concerning safety and cost aspects retard its prospect in certain application scenarios. Accordingly, strenuous efforts have been devoted to the development of the emerging aqueous Zn-ion battery (AZIB) as an alternative to inflammable organic batteries. In particular, the instability from the anode side severely impedes the commercialization of AZIB. Constructing an artificial interphase layer (AIL) has been widely employed as an effective strategy to stabilize the Zn anode. This review specializes in the state-of-the-art of AIL design for Zn anode protection, encompassing the preparation methods, mechanism investigations, and device performances based on the classification of functional materials. To begin with, the origins of Zn instability are interpreted from the perspective of electrical field, mass transfer, and nucleation process, followed by a comprehensive summary with respect to functions of AIL and its designing criteria. In the end, current challenges and future outlooks based upon theoretical and experimental considerations are included.

Abstract
Aqueous rechargeable zinc ion batteries are regarded as a competitive alternative to lithium-ion batteries because of their distinct advantages of high security, high energy density, low cost, and environmental friendliness. However, deep-seated problems including Zn dendrite and adverse side reactions severely impede the practical application. In this work, we proposed a freestanding Zn-electrolyte interfacial layer composed of multicapsular carbon fibers (MCFs) to regulate the plating/stripping behavior of Zn anodes. The versatile MCFs protective layer can uniformize the electric field and Zn2+ flux, meanwhile, reduce the deposition overpotentials, leading to high-quality and rapid Zn deposition kinetics. Furthermore, the bottom-up and uniform deposition of Zn on the Zn-MCFs interface endows long-term and high-capacity plating. Accordingly, the Zn@MCFs symmetric batteries can keep working up to 1500 h with 5 mAh cm-2. The feasibility of the MCFs interfacial layer is also convinced in Zn@MCFs||MnO2 batteries. Remarkably, the Zn@MCFs||α-MnO2 batteries deliver a high specific capacity of 236.1 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 with excellent stability, and maintain an exhilarating energy density of 154.3 Wh kg-1 at 33% depth of discharge in pouch batteries.

Abstract
Due to the advantages of the low cost of Zn and the safety of aqueous electrolytes, the aqueous Zn ion battery (AZIB) is expected to become the next-generation battery after lithium-ion batteries. However, the problems of Zn anode dendrite growth, self-corrosion, and passivation in AZIBs lead to short cycle life and short circuit of the battery. In this work, uniform and stable Silk II-silk fibroin (Silk II-SF) coating was prepared on the surface of Zn anode by a simple method. Experiments showed that the SF coating could prevent dendritic growth and hydrogen evolution corrosion. Therefore, symmetric cells using Silk II-SF@Zn anode achieved a cycle life over 3300 and 1500 h at current densities of 10 and 20 mA cm-2 , respectively. Using Silk II-SF coating to protect Zn anode is a simple and effective strategy to realize dendrite-free Zn anode and long-cycle-life AZIBs.

Abstract
Herein, the MnCo2O4.5 microflowers (MFs) assembled by two-dimensional (2D) porous nanosheets were prepared through an initial solvothermal reaction with a subsequent annealing process. In this architecture, many interconnected 2D thin nanosheets were self-assembled together to form a 3D hierarchical MF with plenty of open channels. Such structure endows these MnCo2O4.5 MFs with large specific surface area of 156.85 m2/g for energy storage and provides rich ion diffusion pathways for ion transportation, thus the as-prepared MFs can exhibit good overall electrochemical performance in both hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) and lithium-ion battery (LIB). For the utilization in supercapacitor, the MFs deliver a specific capacity of 287.02 C/g at 1 A/g as well as a rate capability with 73.3 % capacity retention at 8 A/g. The energy density of the HSC assembled by MFs and activated carbon can reach up to 30.33 W h kg-1 at 959.35 W kg-1. When applied as the anode for Li-ion battery, a specific capacity of 1340.8 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A/g and cycling performance with low capacity loss of 0.73 mAh/g per cycle after 200 cycles at 0.5 A/g can be achieved. This work uncovers a repeatable and facile synthetic strategy to prepare transition metal oxides with large specific surface area and good overall electrochemical property.

Abstract
By virtue of low cost, eco-friendliness, competitive gravimetric energy density, and intrinsic safety, more and more attention has increasingly focused on aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) as a promising alternative for scalable energy storage. However, plagued by a complex interfacial process, sluggish dynamics, lability of electrodes and electrolytes, insufficient energy density, and poor cycle life heavily restrict practical applications of AZIBs, indicating that profound understandings on cathode storage chemistry are necessarily needed. Hence, this paper comprehensively summarizes recent advance in cathodes with critical insight on the energy storage mechanism. Furthermore, the issues and challenges for high-performance cathodes are meticulously explored, presenting inspiring structural engineering and modification strategies. Finally, rational evaluations on representative cathodes are rendered, suggesting the potential development direction of AZIBs.
