Abstract
BACKGROUND With the rise in interest and demand for body contouring, beauty devices have continuously developed. Suction can aid in increasing the rate of fat breakdown by inducing a massage-like effect, thereby increasing blood flow. Moreover, radiofrequency (RF) can boost fibroblast activity and help reduce cellulite. In addition, electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) can use electrical stimulation to induce muscle contraction, leading to an athletic, and skin elasticity-increasing effect. AIMS This study aimed to assess the effects of body contouring, such as cellulite and swelling, in healthy Korean women to objectively prove the efficacy of an at-home beauty device equipped with suction, RF, and EMS functions. METHODS For 8 weeks, 21 participants used the at-home beauty device 3 days a week on their abdomen, thighs, and left calf. Validity assessments and subjective surveys were conducted at 4 and 8 weeks, including the first visit. RESULTS The results of the validity assessments revealed that cellulite, swelling, elasticity, femoral skin texture, and dermal density were significantly (p < 0.05) improved in the experimental group compared with those at the baseline. CONCLUSIONS The results of this study demonstrate that the combination of suction, RF, and EMS function is effective for body skin, fat, and body shape management. For better body-contouring effects, combining the beauty device with regular exercise and healthy eating habits is recommended.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Treatment of male rodents with estradiol (E2) is associated with anorexia and weight loss by poorly understood mechanisms. We examined the role of the orexigenic hypothalamic peptide melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) and the appetite-inhibiting, fat-derived hormone leptin in mediating E2-induced anorexia. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES We studied the effect of E2 treatment (implantation of either E2 pellet or matching placebo) in male C57Bl/6J mice, as well as in a lean mouse model (MCH knockout mice) and an obese model (leptin-deficient ob/ob mice). We also studied the effect of E2 treatment in the context of high-fat diet. RESULTS We confirmed E2 dose-dependent anorexia in male wild type mice fed a normal chow diet. E2 treatment was associated with a significant decrease in body fat, serum leptin levels, and arcuate hypothalamic proopiomelanocortin expression. E2-implanted mice also showed increased hypothalamic neuropeptide Y and MCH expression. As MCH has been implicated in E2-induced hypophagia, we performed E2 pellet implantation in MCH knockout mice and observed hypophagia and weight loss, indicating that MCH is not an essential mediator of E2-induced anorexia. E2-implanted ob/ob mice also had hypophagia and weight loss, indicating that leptin is not essential for E2-induced anorexia. High-fat diet significantly exacerbated the effect of E2 treatment, leading to a 99.6% decrease in food intake at 48 hours and a 30% loss of body weight within 1 week. DISCUSSION The anorectic effects of E2 were independent of MCH and leptin. Our results suggested that E2 may have effects on nutrient preferences.

Abstract
We previously reported that simvastatin induces estrogen receptor-alpha (ERα) in murine bone marrow stromal cells in vitro. In this study, we investigated the effect of simvastatin on ERα expression in bone and uterus in ovariectomized (OVX) rats and evaluated bone mass, bone strength, and uterine wet weight. Three-month-old Sprague-Dawley female rats received OVX or sham operation. Six weeks later, the rats were treated orally with simvastatin (5 or 10 mg/kg/day), or intraperitoneally with 17-β-estradiol (E(2)) or a combination of simvastatin and E(2) for 6 weeks. Uterine wet weight, bone mineral density (BMD) of lumbar vertebrae, biomechanics of lumbar vertebrae, and induction of ERα expression in the bone and uterus were analyzed. The 6-week simvastatin treatment improved lumbar vertebral BMD and boosted biomechanical performance of the vertebral body compared to the OVX control, suggesting that simvastatin can treat osteoporosis caused by estrogen deficiency. More interestingly, simvastatin could increase ERα expression and synergy with estradiol in bone while antagonizing estradiol in the uterus, along with uterus atrophy and uterine wet weight decreases. In conclusion, these data suggest that simvastatin exert opposing modulatory effects on ERα expression on bone and uterus in ovariectomized rats, inducing ERα expression and synergy with estrogen to perform anabolic effects on the bones while decreasing E2 efficacy and uterine wet weight. This finding may be helpful to explain the mechanism of statin treatment in osteoporosis caused by estrogen deficiency.

Abstract
Estrogen receptor activation has been shown to reduce body weight and produce a conditioned reduction in food intake in male rats that is putatively mediated by estradiol's suggested aversive effects. Evidence has shown that the selective estrogen receptor modulator tamoxifen used in the prevention and treatment of breast cancer may also produce changes in food intake and body weight, which are known to impact cancer development and survival. The purpose of the present study was to examine whether tamoxifen produces a conditioned reduction in intake similar to estradiol by producing a conditioned aversion. A one bottle lickometer test was used to examine conditioned changes in sucrose drinking, while the taste reactivity test was used to measure rejection reactions, which serve to index aversion in rats. A backward conditioning procedure that consisted of 3 conditioning days and one vehicle test day was used to examine conditioned changes in 0.3 M sucrose intake and taste reactivity. Our results show that tamoxifen produced a conditioned reduction in sucrose drinking in a one bottle fluid intake test that was similar to the effects produced by estradiol (positive control); however, no active rejection reactions were produced by either tamoxifen (1 and 10 mg/kg) or estradiol. The present results suggest that tamoxifen, at the doses used in the present study, acts as an estrogen receptor agonist to regulate food intake and that the conditioned reduction in intake produced by tamoxifen and estradiol reflects conditioned taste avoidance rather than conditioned taste aversion.

Abstract
A diurnal rhythm occurs in the activity state of branched-chain alpha-keto acid dehydrogenase complex (BCKDC) in female but not male rats. We attempted to determine the role played by ovarian hormones in this difference in enzyme regulation. A series of experiments examined the effects of the 4-d estrous cycle, ovariectomy, and replacement of female sex steroids on the catabolism of BCAAs. A proestrous decrease in the activity state of the complex corresponded to an increase in the plasma 17beta-estradiol level. Withdrawal of gonadal steroids by ovariectomy resulted in an increase in the activity state of BCKDC and a decrease in the activity of the branched-chain alpha-keto acid dehydrogenase kinase (BDK). However, 17beta-estradiol reversed these effects, resulting in an increase in the BDK activity, thereby decreasing the activity of the complex. Progesterone administration was ineffective. The changes in the percentage of active BCKDC caused by 17beta-estradiol withdrawal and replacement resulted from changes in the amount of BDK protein associated with the complex and therefore its activity. Thus, the marked diurnal variation in the activity state of BCKDC exhibited by female rats involves estrogenic control of BDK activity. We hypothesize that the 17beta-estradiol-controlled feeding pattern produces these variations in BCKDC activity. This may function in female rats to conserve essential amino acids for protein synthesis.

Abstract
Exposure to stress may cause either an increase or a decrease in food intake. Behavioral and physiological responses to stress, including alterations in feeding behavior, are sexually dimorphic. This study aimed to evaluate the interaction between estradiol levels and chronic variate stress on the intake of sweet food and on serum levels of leptin, a hormone secreted by the adipose cells with a role in the regulation of body weight. Adult female Wistar rats were used. After ovariectomy, the animals received estradiol replacement (or oil) subcutaneously. Rats were then divided in controls and stressed (submitted to 30 days of variate stress). Consumption of sweet food and of serum leptin was measured. Although animals receiving estradiol replacement presented smaller weight gain, they showed an increased consumption of sweet food. Chronic variate stress decreased sweet food intake at 30, but not at 20, days of treatment. Estradiol replacement in the stressed group prevented both the reduction observed in sweet food intake and the increase in leptin levels. These results suggest that there is an interaction between chronic stress and estradiol replacement in feeding behavior concerning sweet food consumption, and this interaction may be related to altered leptin levels.

Abstract
Hepatic alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity is higher in female than in male rats. Although sex steroids, thyroid, and growth hormone (GH) have been shown to regulate hepatic ADH, the mechanism(s) for sexual dimorphic expression is unclear. We tested the possibility that the GH secretory pattern determined differential expression of ADH. Gonadectomized and hypophysectomized male and female rats were examined. Hepatic ADH activity was 2.1-fold greater in females. Because protein and mRNA content were also 1.7- and 2.4-fold greater, results indicated that activity differences were due to pretranslational mechanisms. Estradiol increased ADH selectively in males, and testosterone selectively decreased activity and mRNA levels in females. Effect of sex steroids on ADH was lost after hypophysectomy; infusion of GH in males increased ADH to basal female levels, supporting a role of the pituitary-liver axis. However, GH and L-thyroxine (T4) replacements alone in hypophysectomized rats did not restore dimorphic differences for either ADH activity or mRNA levels. On the other hand, T4 in combination with intermittent administration of GH reduced ADH activity and mRNA to basal male values, whereas T4 plus GH infusion replicated female levels. These results indicate that the intermittent male pattern of GH secretion combined with T4 is the principal determinant of low ADH activity in male liver.

Abstract
The acute administration of the neurosteroid precursor, progesterone (10 mg/kg, s.c.) produced significant hyperphagia in female mice as observed at 0.5-, 1-, 2- and 3-h time intervals. At this dose progesterone also produced significant increase in immobility period duration in Porsolt's forced swim test and nociceptive response in hot-plate and tail-flick tests. Treatment with direct (quipazine, 5 mg/kg, i.p.) and indirect (fluoxetine, 10 mg/kg, i.p.) acting serotonergic agents per se produced significant hypophagia, decrease in immobility period and induced analgesic effect in hot-plate and tail-flick test. Further, treatment with both fluoxetine (10 mg/kg, i.p.) and quipazine (5 mg/kg, i.p.) significantly reversed progesterone-induced hyperphagia, depression and algesia in the female mice. Pretreatment with seganserin, a 5-HT(2) receptor antagonist (2 mg/kg, i.p.) significantly reversed fluoxetine and quipazine-induced antidepressant and analgesic effects. Seganserin reversed quipazine-induced hypophagia but in a replicate study it failed to reverse fluoxetine-induced hypophagia. Further, seganserin, 2 mg/kg, i.p., significantly reversed the suppressive effect of fluoxetine and quipazine on progesterone-induced hyperphagia, depression and algesia in hot-plate test. Seganserin also reversed the suppressive effect of fluoxetine and quipazine on progesterone-induced algesia in hot-plate test. These data suggest that the modulation of progesterone-induced effects by these serotonergic agents possibly involve 5-HT(2) receptor mechanisms. Further, the study underscores the use of serotonergic agents for the treatment of eating and affective disorders caused by the regular changes or disturbances of ovarian steroid levels in females.

Abstract
The purpose of these experiments was to test the hypothesis that attenuating the endogenous increase of the 5alpha-reduced progesterone metabolite 5alpha-pregnan-3alpha-ol-20-one (3alpha,5alpha-THP) in the hippocampus will alter anxiety and depression behavior of proestrous rats. In Experiment 1, anxiety (open field) and depression (forced swim test) behavior was compared of rats that should have high (proestrous) and low (diestrous and male rats) endogenous hippocampal 3alpha,5alpha-THP. Proestrous rats exhibited more anxiolytic-like (increased central entries in the open field) and anti-depressant-like (less immobility in the forced swim test) behavior than diestrous or male rats. In Experiments 2 and 3, respectively, systemic and intrahippocampal finasteride, a 5alpha-reductase inhibitor which attenuates progesterone's metabolism to 3alpha,5alpha-THP, versus vehicle administration to proestrous rats was compared for effects on open field and forced swim test behavior. Systemic or intrahippocampal finasteride decreased central entries in the open field and increased immobility in the forced swim tests compared to vehicle administration. In Experiment 4, the effects of systemic and intrahippocampal finasteride vs vehicle administration on hippocampal 3alpha,5alpha-THP of proestrous rats was examined. Finasteride, SC or intrahippocampally, reduced 3alpha,5alpha-THP in the hippocampus compared to vehicle administration. Together these data suggest that variations in 3alpha,5alpha-THP levels in the hippocampus may mitigate proestrous changes in anxiety and depressive behavior of cycling rats.

Abstract
This study documented the effect of changes in male and female sex hormones and the selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) tamoxifen on weight gain and food consumption of rats from puberty to adulthood, and assessed whether age at onset of treatment affected outcome. In Study 1, male and female WKY rats were either neutered or sham-operated before puberty, and a subgroup of neutered females underwent estrogen replacement (ERT) at the age of puberty. In Study 2, subgroups of neutered females received either ERT or tamoxifen beginning well into the postpuberty period. Weekly body weight and food consumption were assessed, and food consumption was normalized to metabolic weight (body weight(0.67)). Neutering reduced the rate of weight gain in males (P < 0.05), but significantly increased it in females (P < 0.0001). ERT immediately reduced weight gain and prevented any further increase, resulting in weights below that of sham-operated females (P < 0.05). Tamoxifen prevented further weight gain and returned profiles to that of sham-operated females. Food consumption, normalized to metabolic weight, was similar in females and males, and both sexes showed a decrease through maturation to adulthood. Neutering decreased food consumption below that of sham-operated animals in both males and females (P < 0.05), and ERT returned it to sham levels. Despite the fact that tamoxifen had an effect on body weight similar to that of ERT, females receiving tamoxifen treatment consumed less food than both sham-operated and ERT females (P < 0.05). Weight gain is modulated by sex hormones in male and female rats, with both estrogen and tamoxifen exerting immediate effects in females, irrespective of the age at which treatment is initiated. Differences in food consumption do not appear to account for the effects of hormones and tamoxifen on body weight, suggesting that they exert a direct effect on overall body metabolism.

Abstract
Estrogen treatment can suppress the intake of a previously presented gustatory conditioned stimulus (CS). This finding has been interpreted as an estrogen-induced conditioned taste aversion. However, a distinction must be made between taste aversion and taste avoidance. In particular, tastes are only considered aversive if they elicit a stereotypic behavioral response, otherwise the reduction in intake is classified as an avoidance. Although aversive orofacial responses have been reported in male rats after taste-estrogen pairings, they have not been examined in ovariectomized female rats. The goal of the present investigation, then, was to use similar procedures to determine whether conditioned aversion also mediates the estrogen-induced reduction of intake in female rats. Animals were introduced to a novel 0.1% saccharin solution and immediately thereafter were given a subcutaneous injection of vehicle or estradiol benzoate (10 microg). Responses were assessed using a two-bottle preference test, a one-bottle acceptance test, and a taste reactivity (TR) test. The results confirmed previous reports of a reduced preference for saccharin after saccharin-estradiol pairing using the two-bottle test. The reduction in intake during the one-bottle test, however, was not accompanied by stereotypic aversive responses, such as gaping. Surprisingly, a similar reduction in intake also occurred when using a backward conditioning procedure in which estrogen was injected before, rather than after, CS access. Thus, the present results show that the suppressive effects of estrogen reflect an avoidance, rather than aversion and, moreover, that the reduced intake may be due to an unconditioned, rather than a conditioned, response.

Abstract
Sex differences and estrous cycle variations in anxiolytic-like behaviors and progestin concentrations were examined. Proestrous (n=22), estrous (n=19), diestrous (n=20), and male (n=18) Long-Evans rats were tested in horizontal crossing, open field, elevated plus-maze, emergence, holeboard, social interaction, tailflick, pawlick, and defensive burying tasks. Concentrations of plasma and hippocampal progesterone and 5alpha-pregnan-3alpha-ol-20-one (3alpha,5alpha-THP) were measured by radioimmunoassay in behaviorally tested (proestrus n=11, estrus n=8, diestrus n=9, male n=7) and yoked non-tested rats (proestrus n=11, estrus n=8, diestrus n=10, male n=8). Proestrous females exhibited more anxiolytic-like behavior than all other groups on the elevated plus-maze, social interaction, and defensive burying tasks. Proestrous females had significantly shorter latencies to emerge from a cylinder than did estrous and diestrous females, but not males. Proestrous and estrous females entered significantly more peripheral and total squares in a brightly-lit open field than did males. While proestrous females had a tendency to make more beam breaks than did males in the horizontal crossing task, there were no differences between groups on the holeboard task. There was a tendency for proestrous females to have longer tailflick latencies than diestrous and male rats; however, on the pawlick task there were no differences among the groups. Plasma and central progesterone and 3alpha,5alpha-THP of tested and non-tested rats were not different. Proestrous females had significantly higher plasma and hippocampal progesterone and 3alpha,5alpha-THP levels than all other groups. These data demonstrate that proestrous increases in anxiolytic-like behavior coincide with elevated circulating and hippocampal progestin concentrations.

Abstract
Body composition is related to age, genetic factors, and hormonal patterns throughout life, Peak bone mass seems to be an important protective factor against osteoporosis, although diet and life-style (smoking, physical activity) are able to influence bone mass. While it is well known that estrogens exert a protective action against bone loss in postmenopausal women, the role of androgens is still not clear. Twenty-five women in the early postmenopausal period (age: 52.8 +/- 5.1 years) were measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) to assess the relationship between body composition (fat mass and lean mass), bone mineral content (BMC), bone mineral density (BMD) and androgen pattern. Waist/hip ratio was used to divide the study population in three groups: gynecoid (gluteo-femural fat distribution), android abdominal fat distribution), and intermediate. In all subjects an inverse significant correlations between estradiol and fat mass was found. In the abdominal fat distribution group significant correlations between estradiol and weight (inversely correlated), androstenedione and BMD, learn mass an BMC were found. The data show the important role of androgens (androstenedione, particularly) and lean body mass on the BMD and BMC, respectively, in the early period of postmenopause.
