Abstract
Group living may entail local resource competition (LRC) which can be reduced if the birth sex ratio (BSR) is biased towards members of the dispersing sex who leave the group and no longer compete locally with kin. In primates, the predicted relationship between dispersal and BSR is generally supported although data for female dispersal species are rare and primarily available from captivity. Here, we present BSR data for Phayre's leaf monkeys (Trachypithecus phayrei crepusculus) at the Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary, Thailand (N = 104). In this population, nearly all natal females dispersed, while natal males stayed or formed new groups nearby. The slower reproductive rate in larger groups suggests that food can be a limiting resource. In accordance with LRC, significantly more females than males were born (BSR 0.404 males/all births) thus reducing future competition with kin. This bias was similar in 2-year-olds (no sex-differential mortality). It became stronger in adults, supporting our impression of particularly fierce competition among males. To better evaluate the importance of BSR, more studies should report sex ratios throughout the life span, and more data for female dispersal primates need to be collected, ideally for multiple groups of different sizes and for several years.

Abstract
Abstract
Sexual selection echoed by the sex ratio is a critical issue in evolution and reproductive biology studies, and the second sex ratio (sex ratio at birth, SRB) is an important evaluation indicator for sex regulation. However, broad debates on sex ratio at birth exist due to the lack of a clear spatiotemporal genealogical database. This study explicitly tests the Trivers and Willard’s hypothesis stating that parents with good social conditions tend to show a male-biased SRB. Using a database of Chinese imperial families from 211BC to 1912 (2142 years) which avoids the spatiotemporal confusion of data thanks to its clear boundaries and long timespan, we found that a proportion of males at birth was 0.54. In particular, the results indicate that the empresses generated a significantly higher male-biased SRB than the concubines within the imperial harems (0.61 vs 0.53), while the SRB of concubines was not higher than ordinary people (0.53 vs 0.52). A significant difference of SRB before and after empress coronation (0.48 vs 0.65) was detected, indicating that the change to a higher social status is the leading cause of a biased SRB. These findings suggest that mothers with privileged instant social conditions tend to generate more boys than girls. In other words, a higher maternal social rank during the conception period, instead of rich resources, forms the primary mechanism regulating the SRB.
Significance statement
Adaptive sex ratio has been a debatable topic difficult to clearly verify since the publication of Trivers and Willard Hypothesis in 1973, which proposes that parents who have good conditions should produce more male offspring. The one reason is that the validity and sample size of the databases used contained unavoidable confounding noise, both genealogically and genetically. To overcome these issues, we specifically compiled a historical database of Chinese imperial families, which are characterized by a confined mating harem and unique eunuch system, guaranteeing biological and genetic purity with precise genealogical relationships and genetic linkages between the parents and the offspring. Thus, this is an extraordinary effort to clarify the hypotheses proposed by TWH and other hypotheses.

Abstract
Large carnivores are essential components of natural ecosystems. In populated areas, their conservation depends on preserving a favorable status in coexistence with humans, which may require the elimination of excess carnivores to minimize public concerns. As the Baltic region currently hosts a thriving wolf population, locally sustainable management of wolves is important for preserving biodiversity at a European scale. In this paper, we provide a dynamic assessment of the Latvian wolf subpopulation from 1998 until 2020. This study is based on age composition and fecundity data from teeth, uteri, and ovaria inspections obtained from samples of legally culled or accidentally killed individuals. The abundance estimates indicated population growth that exceeded the previously predicted carrying capacity. The proportion of juveniles among the culled individuals increased in recent years, but the mean age of culled adults exhibited a stable trend. In presumably nonselective hunting, the juveniles and individuals older than 3 years had greater culling mortality estimates in comparison with other age classes, and the culling rates for adult females of particular age classes were higher than for males of the same age. While creating significant hunting pressure, wolf management in Latvia may have contributed to the population growth by affecting its demographic processes.

Abstract
Over the last 25 years, a large amount of research has been dedicated to identifying men's preferences for women's physical features, and the evolutionary benefits associated with such preferences. Today, this area of research generates substantial controversy and criticism. I argue that part of the crisis is due to inaccuracies in the evolutionary hypotheses used in the field. For this review, I focus on the extensive literature regarding men's adaptive preferences for women's waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), which has become a classic example of the just-so storytelling contributing to the general mistrust toward evolutionary explanations of human behavior. The issues in this literature originate in the vagueness and incompleteness of the theorizing of the evolutionary mechanisms leading to mate preferences. Authors seem to have rushed into testing and debating the effects of WHR on women's attractiveness under various conditions and using different stimuli, without first establishing (a) clear definitions of the central evolution concepts (e.g., female mate value is often reduced to an imprecise concept of "health-and-fertility"), and (b) a complete overview of the distinct evolutionary paths potentially at work (e.g., focusing on fecundability while omitting descendants' quality). Unsound theoretical foundations will lead to imprecise predictions which cannot properly be tested, thus ultimately resulting in the premature rejection of an evolutionary explanation to human mate preferences. This paper provides the first comprehensive review of the existing hypotheses on why men's preferences for a certain WHR in women might be adaptive, as well as an analysis of the theoretical credibility of these hypotheses. By dissecting the evolutionary reasoning behind each hypothesis, I show which hypotheses are plausible and which are unfit to account for men's preferences for female WHR. Moreover, the most cited hypotheses (e.g., WHR as a cue of health or fecundity) are found to not necessarily be the ones with the strongest theoretical support, and some promising hypotheses (e.g., WHR as a cue of parity or current pregnancy) have seemingly been mostly overlooked. Finally, I suggest some directions for future studies on human mate choice, to move this evolutionary psychology literature toward a stronger theoretical foundation.

Abstract
Within current theories on potential adaptive manipulation of offspring sex ratio, giving birth to a male or to a female is assumed to depend on the capacity of the mother to invest in offspring to maximize her fitness. The active role of the father in sex ratio bias at birth has been neglected until recently. The human sex ratio at birth is biased towards sons, although in occidental populations, the ratio has decreased regularly for 30 years and could be the consequence of the adverse effects of environmental chemicals on male hormones. In a Malagasy primate, the lesser mouse lemur, the potential effect of paternal testosterone levels on sex ratio bias at birth was tested on 130 litters (278 babies) produced in 52 mixed-sex groups. For each group, social dominance among males was characterized based on aggressive interactions and sexual behaviours. Using a multi correspondence analysis, high testosterone levels in grouped males, particularly those of the dominant male, were significantly correlated with more infants produced in male-biased litters, independent of the female condition. According to these results, predictions for sex ratio bias towards one sex or the other in mouse lemurs were discussed considering the influence of both parents.

Abstract
A high cholesterol diet is related to ovarian dysfunction and infertility which has been increased among young ages consuming processed food products. The present study was conducted to evaluate the role of a high cholesterol diet on the ovaries of young female rats via assessments of histopathology, immunohistochemistry, oxidative stress and apoptic markers. Also, mating of hypercholesterolemic female rats was carried out to measure the fertility and numbers of their offspring. At the same time, phytotherapy was carried out through supplementing the diet with barley and/ or date palm fruits (10%) during the experiment to assess the phyto-therapeutic impacts in attenuation of drastic hypercholesterolemic effects. Hypercholesterolemic diet-fed rats exhibited damage of the ovarian follicles and increased follicular atresia. Furthermore, expression of cleaved caspase-3 was upregulated, while PCNA was downregulated in granulosa, theca and stroma cells. Hypercholesterolemic female rats showed marked depletion of antioxidative enzymes, increased lipid peroxidation and apoptotic markers. Alterations to the female serum hormones were detected. Offspring maternally fed on hypercholesterolemic diet showed a significant decrease of body weight and altered sex ratio. However, concomitant supplementation of barley and or date fruits to hypercholesterolemic groups revealed marked improvement of ovarian structure and function. On the basis of these evidences, it is believed that the enhanced synergistic effects of barley and/or date palm fruits in the amelioration of ovarian structure and functions were elicited by the potential antioxidant activity of their phytomicronutrients, polyphenols, β-glucan and trace elements. These materials scavenge free radicals from inflamed cells that can be used to establish an effective and novel therapeutic strategy for activating ovarian cell regeneration.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate whether beef cows that achieve higher dominance status than their age-mates have prolonged reproductive life, increased number of offspring born and weaned, and/or heavier BW of the offspring. We also assessed whether maternal dominance rank affects the offspring sex ratio. We recorded data on 309 potential deliveries of female beef cows with known dominance status in a seasonally pastured herd over a 14-yr period and linked them with yearly records of dominance status of the cows assessed around feeding. We did not find any effect of age-corrected dominance index on cow reproductive success measured as delivery or weaning success, calf birth weight or weaning weight, survival of the cow to the following reproductive season, or sex of the conceived calf (generalized linear models, > 0.05). In conclusion, the results indicate that in a typical situation of pastured beef cattle, there might be no selection for individual striving to achieve higher dominance status.

Abstract
Sex allocation theory assumes that offspring sex (son vs. daughter) has consequences for maternal fitness. The most compelling experiment to test this theory would involve manipulating offspring sex and measuring the fitness consequences of having the "wrong" sex. Unfortunately, the logistical challenges of such an experiment limit its application. In tammar wallabies (Macropus eugenii), previous evidence suggests that mothers in good body condition are more likely to produce sons compared to mothers in poor condition, in support of the Trivers-Willard Hypothesis (TW) of condition-dependent sex allocation. More recently, we have found in our population of tammar wallabies that females with seemingly poor access to resources (based on condition loss over the dry summer) are more likely to produce sons, consistent with predictions from the Local Resource Competition (LRC) hypothesis, which proposes that production of sons or daughters is driven by the level of potential competition between mothers and philopatric daughters. We conducted a cross-fostering experiment in free-ranging tammar wallabies to disassociate the effects of rearing and birthing offspring of each sex. This allowed us to test the prediction of the LRC hypothesis that rearing daughters reduces the future direct fitness of mothers post-weaning and the prediction of the TW hypothesis that rearing sons requires more energy during lactation. Overall, we found limited costs to the mother of rearing the "wrong" sex, with switching of offspring sex only reducing the likelihood of a mother having a pouch young the following year. Thus, we found some support for both hypotheses in that rearing an unexpected son or an unexpected daughter both lead to reduced future maternal fitness. The study suggests that there may be context-specific costs associated with rearing the "wrong" sex.

Abstract
Previous research has identified physical and behavioral differences between parents who produce sons and those who produce daughters. However, the possibility that men and women have predictions about the sexes of their offspring based on these differences, or any other interoceptive cues, has not been investigated. We compared the dominance, sociosexual orientation, estradiol, testosterone, and 2D:4D ratios of men and women who predicted they would conceive a boy as their first child with those who predicted a girl. Women who predicted they would have a boy were more dominant and less sociosexually restricted than those who predicted they would have a girl. Men who predicted they would have a girl had higher salivary estradiol and higher (more feminine) 2D:4D ratios than those who predicted they would have a boy. Possible implications of these results are discussed in the context of evolutionary theory.

Abstract
In several studies of different species, the proportions of male and female offspring did not match the statistical assumption of 50:50. Aside from environmental and genetic factors, biological parameters were found to influence the sex ratio. Three hypotheses (Trivers-Willard, advantaged daughter, and the local resource competition hypothesis) have been proposed, stating that the sex of progeny might be influenced by sex-biased maternal investment in the raising of offspring. The results of existing studies are still conflicting, even within studies on the same species. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the dominance status of cows influences the secondary sex ratio. A herd of lactating cows was observed directly for 126 h, and a dominance index (DI) was established for 71 individuals (aged between 2.6 and 9.8 yr) for which at least 8 encounters had been observed to categorize individuals as subordinate, intermediate, or dominant. Furthermore, the number and sex of calves were assessed, and further individual characteristics of the animals (e.g., age, milk yield, body condition, and lameness scores) were analyzed for interrelationships with dominance status as well as the influence of the DI on the secondary sex ratio. The results indicated that the DI was independent of age, but a negative correlation was found between DI and lameness, whereas a positive correlation was shown for DI and body condition score. In general, more dominant animals had lower lameness scores and better body conditions. No sex ratio bias was found for primi- or for pluriparous animals and no seasonal influences were detected. The proportion of male offspring was significantly correlated with the DI of lactating cows, where animals with a higher social rank produced a lower proportion of male progeny. The pairwise comparison between dominant and subordinate lactating cows revealed a significant difference in the sex ratios of progeny, with subordinate animals having more male calves. These results indicate that the maternal dominance rank was associated with the secondary sex ratio in cattle. These observations are generally in agreement with the advantaged daughter hypothesis.

Abstract
Maternal diet and secondary factors can strikingly influence fetal outcomes, including biasing offspring sex ratio and altering the molecular biological responses of the conceptus, namely within the placenta. Alterations in the in utero environment might also lead to profound developmental origin of health and disease (DOHaD) outcomes into adulthood, including increased risk for cardiovascular disease, obesity and cancer, with males in general being at greater risk for these diseases. Female mice maintained on a very high fat (VHF) diet birth more sons than those on a chow-based and low fat (LF), high carbohydrate diet, with the latter group producing more daughters. However, neither the underlying mechanisms that contribute to this shift in offspring sex ratio nor when they occur during pregnancy have been resolved. In this review, we consider the evidence that maternal diet and other factors influence secondary sex ratio in a variety of species, including humans, and discuss when this skewing might occur. Additionally, we examine how fetal sex and maternal diet influences gene expression patterns in the mouse placenta, which serves as the primary nutrient acquisition and communication organ between the mother and her developing pups. These adaptations to diet observed as changes in gene expression are likely to provide insight into how the placenta buffers the fetus proper from environmental shifts in nutrient availability during pregnancy and whether male and female conceptuses respond differently to such challenges.

In acorn-poor seasons, heavier mothers invested more in sons, and lighter mothers invested more in daughters. In acorn-rich seasons, heavier mothers invested more in daughters, and lighter mothers invested more in sons. Maternal body condition and litter size affected the sex allocation. Furthermore, there was a maternal investment trade-off between a son's birth mass and the number of daughters. Based upon the effect of population fluctuation on the lifetime reproductive success of each sex, we proposed the new "safe bet hypothesis". This hypothesis predicts that frequent and unpredictable change in female distribution, which is often caused by abrupt fall in food condition, favors female-biased maternal investment to offspring by polygynous mammals and is applicable to many small mammals inhabiting in unstable environments.

Abstract
We present a simple mathematical model that describes how primary and secondary sex ratios of offspring may vary adaptively in order to maintain equal numbers of the sexes at the age of reproductive maturity. The model postulates that the sex of an offspring depends probabilistically on a weighted linear combination of maternal testosterone and male vulnerability. The model operates at population level, and is based on three physiological phenomena: first that maternal testosterone in follicular fluid is normally distributed, with levels above the mean more likely to be associated with the conception of males; secondly, that males are more vulnerable than females from conception onwards; and thirdly that under conditions of chronic stress, increased secretion of female testosterone coincides with increased male vulnerability. Thus during times of chronic stress, more males are conceived, but their number of live births is moderated by increased male loss. Variations in secondary sex ratios should therefore be related not only to the stressfulness of environmental conditions, but also to the timing of changes in stressfulness.

Abstract
Although maternal dominance and good condition are frequently associated with raised offspring sex ratios in mammals, the key factor may be female testosterone, which not only underpins the behavioural indicators but could also provide a pathway to a possible proximate mechanism for sex determination. By taking into account the fact that female testosterone levels rise in response to environmental stressors, it is possible to re-interpret the findings of atypical sex ratios in mammals in a way that reconciles seemingly conflicting results and reveals instead what could be a coherent, adaptive system of sex allocation in mammals.

Abstract
Gray wolf ( Canis lupus L., 1758) population fluctuations in northern Belarus (Vitebsk region) between 1990 and 2003 were significantly affected by hunting pressure by humans. Mean litter size was inversely density dependent and varied from 4.8 to 7.7 pups (range 2–10). The increase in litter size with declining density of wolf population concerned only female pups, whereas the number of male pups in a litter was not related to population density. The sex ratio of pups varied significantly: the proportion of females reached 70% in a low-density wolf population and declined to 40%–50% in a high-density population. The age structure also varied. In years following heavy hunting pressure, 55% of individuals shot were juveniles <1 year old (with a strong predominance of females that constituted 69% of juveniles shot), and only 11% of wolves were older than 4 years. The mean age of all wolves shot was 1.5 years. In years following low hunting pressure, 34% of animals shot were juveniles and 20% exceeded 4 years. The mean age was 2.8 years. A female-biased sex ratio of wolf pups conforms to Hiraiwa-Hasegawa’s hypothesis of the advantaged daughter, proposed for species in which mothers are able to influence the reproductive success of their daughters through transmission of rank.

Abstract
At present there appear to be two main categories of problems involved in the ethics of sex selection. The first has to do with the status of the embryo, and the second has to do with the social consequences of making sex selection widely available. However, these may not be the only issues. There is growing evidence from evolutionary psychology and biology, which suggests that the sex of the offspring in mammals may not, after all, be a matter of chance. Instead, sex allocation in mammals may be the result of a finely tuned adaptive process involving the current suitability of a mother to conceive an offspring of a particular sex. If so, we need to know more about this process before embarking on a social policy that could have disadvantageous outcomes for children, their parents and society as a whole.

Abstract
There is general agreement that adaptive variation of sex ratio at birth has not been decisively demonstrated in primates (including human beings). So some workers have questioned whether it actually exists. Others have conjectured that it exists but is subject to as yet unidentified 'constraints' (factors opposing the modifying influences of selection in the phenotype). Meanwhile though most workers have called for research to reveal the proximate causes of sex ratio variation, few (if any) have directed studies toward that end. Here it is argued that hormonal action is responsible both for much adaptive and non-adaptive sex ratio variation, and for constraints on the adaptive variation. My hypothesis proposes that levels of steroid hormones (testosterone and oestrogen) of both parents around the time of conception are positively associated with offspring sex ratio (proportion male at birth) of mammals including man. Testosterone in men and oestrogen in women are also known to be positively associated with the health, attractiveness and fertility of individual human beings. However, high levels of testosterone in women are frequently associated with adverse medical conditions. It is suggested that for these reasons (and contrary to some adaptive theory) some classes of people (particularly women) in suboptimal health ("condition") produce excesses of sons. It seems that gonadal hormones are responsible for adaptive variation; and that maternal adrenal hormones are responsible for maladaptive variation. In evolutionary terms, gonadal hormones precede adrenal hormones.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In primates, including humans, bias of sex ratio at birth has been reported to depend on maternal condition at conception. In a Malagasy primate, the gray mouse lemur, male-biased sex ratio at birth occurred in captive parous females. The male bias was previously demonstrated to be pre-conceptual and independent of the female's nutritional state. It was hypothesized to be related to changes in hormonal state at ovulation. METHODS AND RESULTS The relationship between urinary estradiol (E2) levels during the follicular phase until estrus and litter production (number and sex of newborns) was assessed in 91 females mated under controlled conditions. Changes in E2 levels prior to ovulation followed the typical primate pattern characterized by a gradual rise during the 10 days preceding the sharp increase at estrus. A clear decline in E2 levels occurred with ageing. Direction of the sex ratio bias was unrelated to E2 levels at ovulation time but was significantly dependent on E2 levels during the follicular phase. Reduced E2 levels prior to estrus led to male-biased litters. CONCLUSION This study suggests that hormonal stimulation during the follicular phase plays a role in shifting sex ratio at conception through changes in the local environment of the ova. This hypothesis deserves testing by assessing estrogen levels throughout the follicular phase in other primate species including humans.

Abstract
Evolutionary theory predicts that mothers of different condition should adjust the birth sex ratio of their offspring in relation to future reproductive benefits. Published studies addressing variation in mammalian sex ratios have produced surprisingly contradictory results. Explaining the source of such variation has been a challenge for sex-ratio theory, not least because no mechanism for sex-ratio adjustment is known. I conducted a meta-analysis of previous mammalian sex-ratio studies to determine if there are any overall patterns in sex-ratio variation. The contradictory nature of previous results was confirmed. However, studies that investigated indices of condition around conception show almost unanimous support for the prediction that mothers in good condition bias their litters towards sons. Recent research on the role of glucose in reproductive functioning have shown that excess glucose favours the development of male blastocysts, providing a potential mechanism for sex-ratio variation in relation to maternal condition around conception. Furthermore, many of the conflicting results from studies on sex-ratio adjustment would be explained if glucose levels in utero during early cell division contributed to the determination of offspring sex ratios.

Abstract
Mammals usually produce approximately equal numbers of sons and daughters, but there are exceptions to this general rule, as has been observed in ruminant ungulate species, where the sex-allocation hypothesis of Trivers and Willard has provided a rational evolutionary underpinning to adaptive changes in sex ratio. Here, we review circumstances whereby ruminants and other mammalian species, especially rodents and primates, appear able to skew the sex ratio of their offspring. We also discuss some of the factors, both nutritional and nonnutritional, that potentially promote such skewing. Work from our laboratory, performed on mice, suggests that age of the mother and maternal diet, rather than the maternal body condition per se, play directive roles in controlling sex ratio. In particular, a diet high in saturated fats but low in carbohydrate leads to the birth of significantly more male than female offspring in mature laboratory mice, whereas when calories are supplied mainly in the form of carbohydrate rather than fat, daughters predominate. As the diets fed to the mice in these experiments were nutritionally complete and because litter sizes did not differ between treatments, dietary inadequacy seems not to be the cause for sex-ratio distortion. A number of mechanisms, all of which are testable, are discussed to provide an explanation for the phenomenon. We conclude the review by discussing potential implications of these observations to human medicine and agriculture.

Abstract
Trivers and Willard's suggestion that natural selection favors maternal control of offspring sex ratio in relation to maternal condition has been much debated. The theoretical plausibility of the idea, under some conditions, is firmly established, and there is strong empirical support for conditional sex allocation in some taxa. However, the extent to which this hypothesis can be applied to mammals, particularly ungulates, has been more controversial. We used meta-analysis to review published studies of the Trivers-Willard hypothesis within ungulates and to assess the overall level of empirical support for the hypothesis. Overall, data from 37 studies of 18 species suggested a weak but significant positive correlation between maternal condition and sex ratio (r=+0.09). However, average effect size differed markedly between different categories of studies. Studies using measures of maternal condition that were taken preconception and on the basis of behavioral dominance provided strong evidence for a relationship between maternal condition and the sex ratio (r=+0.17-0.25). In contrast, studies that used morphological or physiological measures of condition that were measured postconception provided little or no evidence for a relationship between maternal condition and sex ratio (r=+0.05-0.06). There are several reasons to suggest that data collected postconception and relying on morphological measures of condition are less likely to capture variables that cause selection for biased sex allocation. In addition, we found that the relationship between sex ratio and maternal condition depended on life-history characteristics; relationships were stronger when sexual size dimorphism was more male biased and when gestation periods were longer. Overall, our analyses suggest that data from ungulates are consistent with the Trivers-Willard hypothesis but only when appropriate measures are used.

Abstract
In female mammals, it remains controversial whether maternal diet and particularly the source and availability of energy can influence sex of offspring born. Outbred female mice were fed ad libitum from 30 days to approximately 45 wk of age on defined, complete diets that differed only in their relative content of fat and carbohydrate to determine whether calorie source influenced litter size and sex ratio of pups. Diet 1 (very high in saturated fat, VHF) provided 60% of calories as fat, mainly lard. Diet 2 (low in saturated fat, LF) was low in fat (10% of calories) but high in carbohydrate. Mice delivered four litters of pups, resulting in a total of 1,048 young born over 108 pregnancies. Gestation length and litter size did not differ between VHF and LF groups and did not change as mice aged. Sex ratio of pups (fraction male) born to mothers on VHF diet was unusually high (0.67) and to mothers on LF diet very low (0.39) over litters 2, 3, and 4. This skewing of sex ratio was related to diets fed and not to body mass of mothers. Age of mothers was an important variable, however. Mice that were first bred at 10 wk of age delivered similar numbers of sons and daughters, whereas virgin mice bred later than 20 wk of age produced litters that were skewed toward males or females according to diet. The data show that the source of calories provided in a nutritionally complete diet to mature female mice can influence sex of offspring born.

Abstract
We propose a model for sex-ratio adjustment complementary to that of Trivers and Willard. In addition to the three basic assumptions of the Trivers-Willard model, our model assumes that the sex with more variable reproductive success (normally male) is also the sex less constrained for reproduction. This assumption seems realistic, because several studies have demonstrated that poor-condition males may adopt alternative mating strategies and sire some offspring, whereas females have physiological constraints for gestation or egg production that cannot be avoided. Thus, under these circumstances, sons of both poor and good condition would be more valuable for parents than daughters, whereas daughters would be relatively more valuable than sons at intermediate condition. This model predicts, therefore, a U-shaped relationship between parental condition and offspring sex ratio. We present a case study for the monogamous lesser kestrel (Falco naumanni) that fulfills the assumptions and predictions of the model. The minimum body condition for breeding, measured as pectoral thickness, was lower for sons than for daughters. Below this minimum, males had a higher chance of breeding than females. Above this minimum, however, the lifetime reproductive success was condition dependent in males but not in females. Thus, males in better body condition attain, on average, higher reproductive success than females. Offspring sex ratio varied with the size of the father's ornaments and mother condition according to the U-shaped pattern predicted by the model.

Abstract
Birth sex ratios of baboons in Gombe National Park, Tanzania, show an overall male bias of ca. 20%, but there is no obvious explanation for this trend. Individual females did not alter their sex ratios according to persistent levels of local resource competition. Sex ratios showed an unexpected relationship between age and rank: subordinate females had more sons when they were young; dominant females had more sons when they were old. The sex ratio of low-ranking females also varied with the severity of environmental conditions during pregnancy. Our findings suggest that mammalian sex ratios might be the product of more complex processes than is generally recognized or that sex-determining mechanisms impose sufficient constraints to prevent adaptive variation in all contexts.
