Abstract
Synthetic efforts towards nucleosides, nucleotides, oligonucleotides and nucleic acids covalently mercurated at one or more of their base moieties are summarized, followed by a discussion of the proposed, realized and abandoned applications of this unique class of compounds. Special emphasis is given to fields in which active research is ongoing, notably the use of HgII -mediated base pairing to improve the hybridization properties of oligonucleotide probes. Finally, this minireview attempts to anticipate potential future applications of organomercury nucleic acids.

Abstract
AIM AND OBJECTIVE Some ferrocenyl derivatives are active in vitro and in vivo against cancer. Generally, ferrocenyl derivatives for cancer research have three key components: a ferrocene moiety, a conjugated linker that lowers the oxidation potential and some derivative (peptide, nucleobase and others) that can interact with biomolecules. Since the pyrimidine fragment can easily pass through the membrane into the cells and become involved in metabolism; it appears to be promising. Furthermore, this fragment is an electron-acceptor group, so a spacer can be excluded. Therefore, the synthesis of 6-ferrocenylpyrimidin-4(3H)-one derivatives and the study of their anticancer activity have scientific and practical interest. METHODS The syntheses of 6-ferrocenylpyrimidin-4(3H)-one derivatives were performed by the condensation of ethyl 3-ferrocenyl-3-oxopropionate with thiourea or acetamidine or guanidine. The cytotoxicity of four 6- ferrocenylpyrimidin-4(3H)-one derivatives was evaluated by using the MTT assay in vitro against Human breast adenocarcinoma MCF-7 and normal human skin fibroblast HSF cells. The tested derivatives induced a concentration-dependent cytotoxic response in cell lines. RESULTS A study of the cytotoxic activity of 6-ferrocenylpyrimidin-4(3H)-one derivatives by the MTT test has found that all compounds have a dose-dependent toxic effect on the lines of breast cancer cells (MCF-7) and normal human fibroblast cells (HSF). The most pronounced cytotoxic effect is exhibited by 2-methyl-6-ferrocenylpyrimidin- 4(3H)-one (MCF-7, IC50 17 ± 1 µM). CONCLUSION The experimental results confirm the importance of investigation and design of ferrocenylpyrimidin- 4(3H)-one derivatives as anticancer agents. Compounds where the pyrimidine derivatives are directly linked to the ferrocene unit rather than via a spacer group also may be of interest for antiproliferative drug design.

Abstract
In the present work, the synthesis, characterization (FT-IR, multinuclear (1H and 13C) NMR, AAS, Raman, and elemental analyses), DNA binding (cyclic voltammetry, UV-Vis spectroscopy), and in vitro biological screening of nine new ferrocene-incorporated thioureas (A1-A9) are reported. Furthermore, the single-crystal X-ray structure of compound A8 was also determined. The ferrocene-based N,N'-disubstituted thioureas were derived by allowing the ferrocenyl anilines to react with freshly prepared isothiocyanates under a N2 atmosphere in dry acetone. The DNA binding studies performed by cyclic voltammetry and UV-Vis spectroscopy produced results that are in close agreement with one another for the binding constants (K) and an electrostatic mode of interaction was observed. The DFT/B3LYP method was used to determine the charge distribution and HOMO/LUMO energies of the optimized structure. The DFT calculated HOMO and LUMO energies correlate well with the experimentally determined redox potential values. The synthesized ferrocenyl thioureas exhibited good scavenging activity against the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH). These complexes were also scanned for their in vitro cytotoxic activity against MCF-7 carcinoma cells, and also towards the non-cancerous cell line MCF-10A. The results showed modest cytotoxicity against the subjected cancer cell line compared with a standard chemotherapeutic drug (cisplatin). However, these ferrocenyl derivatives have fewer toxic effects in normal cells.

Abstract
The base-pairing properties of 5-mercuricytosine have been explored at the monomer level by NMR titrations and at the oligonucleotide level by melting temperature measurements. The NMR studies revealed a relatively high affinity for guanine, hypoxanthine, and uridine, that is, bases that are deprotonated upon coordination of Hg(II) . Within an oligonucleotide duplex, 5-mercuricytosine formed Hg(II) -mediated base pairs with thymine and guanine. In the former case, the duplex formed was as stable as the respective duplex comprising solely Watson-Crick base pairs. Based on detailed thermodynamic analysis of the melting curves, the stabilization by the Hg(II) -mediated base pairs may be attributed to a comparatively low entropic penalty of hybridization.

Abstract
This review article summarizes the results of a long-term investigation of 5-alkoxymethyluracil analogues and is aimed, in particular, at methods of syntheses. Most of the presented compounds were synthesized in order to evaluate their biological activity, therefore, a brief survey of biological activity, especially antiviral, cytotoxic and antibacterial, is also reported.

Abstract
The synthesis of the title 2'-deoxyadenosine derivatives bearing bipyridine, phenanthroline or terpyridine ligands and their corresponding RuII-complexes in position 8 linked via acetylene or phenylene tethers was accomplished through cross-coupling reactions. The Suzuki-Miyaura reactions of boronic acids or the Sonogashira reactions of terminal acetylene derivatives of oligopyridine ligands were performed either on protected 8-bromoadenosines in organic solvents or, more efficiently, directly on unprotected nucleosides in aqueous acetonitrile or DMF. Direct cross-coupling reactions of unprotected nucleosides with RuII-complexes or the oligopyridine-boronic acids or -acetylenes gave the Ru-labelled nucleosides in one step in fair to good yields. This method was also proven to be applicable for direct Ru-labelling of dATP. Terpyridine-containing 2'-deoxyadenosine exerted significant antiviral and cytostatic effects.

Abstract
This paper reports syntheses, crystal structures and electrochemical results for two ferrocene(Fc)-modified pyrimidine nucleosides that could potentially be used for investigating electron transfer in DNA. Fc was directly attached to the 5-position of deoxyuridine and deoxycytidine via the Stille coupling reaction. Fc-modified uridine was incorporated into DNA trinucleotides with standard solid-phase synthesis. The structures of corresponding detritylated compounds were determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis. Electrochemical investigations of all compounds by cyclic voltammetry revealed reversible redox processes.
