Colloidal phase behavior of high aspect ratio clay nanotubes in symmetric and asymmetric electrolytes

HYPOTHESIS

Imogolite nanotubes (INTs) are unique anisometric particles with monodisperse nanometric diameters. Aluminogermanate double-walled INTs (Ge-DWINTs) are obtained with variable aspect ratios by controlling the synthesis conditions. It thus appears as an interesting model system to investigate how aspect ratio and ionic valence influence the colloidal behavior of highly anisometric rods.

EXPERIMENTS

The nanotubes were synthesized by hydrothermal treatment for 5 or 20 days to modify the aspect ratio while the electrostatic interactions were investigated by comparing the colloidal stability in symmetric and asymmetric electrolytes. The phase behavior and their related microstructure were determined by optical observations and small-angle X-ray scattering measurements, coupled with interparticle distance modelling.

FINDINGS

We revealed that colloidal suspensions of Ge-DWINTs prepared in NaCl are guided by repulsive double layer forces, undergoing different liquid crystal phase transitions before stiffen into a glass-like state. We found that the microstructure can be rationalized by taking into account the anisometric nature of the particles. By contrast, dispersions prepared with asymmetric electrolytes are governed by strong attractive forces and thus form space-filling gels containing large nanotubes aggregates.

Controversial Issues Related to Dye Adsorption on Clay Minerals: A Critical Review

This critical review points out the most serious and problematic issues to be found in the literature on the adsorption of dyes on clay minerals. The introduction draws attention to the fundamental problems, namely the insufficient characterization of adsorbents, the influence of impurities on the adsorption of dyes, and the choice of inappropriate models for the description of the very complex systems that clay minerals and their systems represent. This paper discusses the main processes accompanying adsorption in colloidal systems of clay minerals. The relationship between the stability of the colloidal systems and the adsorption of dye molecules is analyzed. The usual methodological procedures for determining and evaluating the adsorption of dyes are critically reviewed. A brief overview and examples of modified clay minerals and complex systems for the adsorption of organic dyes are summarized. This review is a guide for avoiding some faults in characterizing the adsorption of organic dyes on clay minerals, to improve the procedure for determining adsorption, to evaluate results correctly, and to find an appropriate theoretical interpretation. The main message of this article is a critical analysis of the current state of the research in this field, but at the same time, it is a guide on how to avoid the most common problems and mistakes.

Adsorption of the hydrophobic organic pollutant hexachlorobenzene to phyllosilicate minerals

Hexachlorobenzene (HCB), a representative of hydrophobic organic chemicals (HOC), belongs to the group of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that can have harmful effects on humans and other biota. Sorption processes in soils and sediments largely determine the fate of HCB and the risks arising from the compound in the environment. In this context, especially HOC-organic matter interactions are intensively studied, whereas knowledge of HOC adsorption to mineral phases (e.g., clay minerals) is comparatively limited. In this work, we performed batch adsorption experiments of HCB on a set of twelve phyllosilicate mineral sorbents that comprised several smectites, kaolinite, hectorite, chlorite, vermiculite, and illite. The effect of charge and size of exchangeable cations on HCB adsorption was studied using the source clay montmorillonite STx-1b after treatment with nine types of alkali (M+: Li, K, Na, Rb, Cs) and alkaline earth metal cations (M2+: Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba). Molecular modeling simulations based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations to reveal the effect of different cations on the adsorption energy in a selected HCB-clay mineral system accompanied this study. Results for HCB adsorption to minerals showed a large variation of solid-liquid adsorption constants Kd over four orders of magnitude (log Kd 0.9-3.3). Experiments with cation-modified montmorillonite resulted in increasing HCB adsorption with decreasing hydrated radii of exchangeable cations (log Kd 1.3-3.8 for M+ and 1.3-1.4 for M2+). DFT calculations predicted (gas phase) adsorption energies (- 76 to - 24 kJ mol-1 for M+ and - 96 to - 71 kJ mol-1 for M2+) showing a good correlation with Kd values for M2+-modified montmorillonite, whereas a discrepancy was observed for M+-modified montmorillonite. Supported by further calculations, this indicated that the solvent effect plays a relevant role in the adsorption process. Our results provide insight into the influence of minerals on HOC adsorption using HCB as an example and support the relevance of minerals for the environmental fate of HOCs such as for long-term source/sink phenomena in soils and sediments.

Influence of Anaerobic Degradation of Organic Matter on the Rheological Properties of Cohesive Mud from Different European Ports

The presence of clay-organic flocs in cohesive mud results in a complex rheological behavior of mud, including viscoelasticity, shear-thinning, thixotropy and two-step yielding. In this study, the effect of microbial degradation of organic matter on the rheological properties of mud samples, collected from different ports, was examined. The mud samples were collected from five different European ports (Port of Antwerp (PoA), Port of Bremerhaven (PoB), Port of Emden (PoE), Port of Hamburg (PoH) and Port of Rotterdam (PoR)), displaying varying sediment properties. The rheological analysis of fresh and degraded mud samples was performed with the help of several tests, including stress ramp-up tests, amplitude sweep tests, frequency sweep tests, time-dependent tests and structural recovery tests. The results showed: (i) a significant decrease in yield stresses and complex modulus after organic matter degradation for mud samples from PoA, PoH and PoR, (ii) a negligible change in rheological properties (yield stresses, crossover amplitude and complex modulus) for mud samples from PoB, and (iii) a significant increase in rheological properties for mud samples from PoE. For time-dependent tests, mud samples from PoB showed a substantial increase in hysteresis (~50% mean value) as compared to the changes in yield stresses and crossover amplitude. The analysis of gas production during degradation of organic matter showed a (i) significant release of carbon per g dry matter for mud samples from PoA, PoH and PoR, (ii) lower carbon release per g dry matter for mud samples from PoB, and (iii) a negligible carbon release per g dry matter for mud samples from PoE, which corresponded well with the change in rheological properties.

Study of Reagent Scheme, Entrainment and Their Relationship in Chalcopyrite Flotation in the Presence of Bentonite and Kaolinite

Entrainment has been considered as an important factor affecting clayey ore flotation. In this study, the effect of reagent dosage on chalcopyrite flotation in the presence of bentonite and kaolinite was investigated through entrainment. It was found that increasing the collector and frother dosage had little influence on copper recovery in the presence of bentonite, but decreased the copper grade substantially, owing to the increase in entrainment. With regard to kaolinite, increasing the reagent dosage increased the copper grade prominently, due to the decrease in entrainment. The substantial variation was related to the different interactions between the reagent and different clay minerals. The smaller surface area and hydration property of bentonite made most of the reagent remain in the solution, facilitating high entrainment, while kaolinite, with its larger surface area, adsorbed most of the reagent, which decreased the entrainment. The results of this study suggest a guideline of controlling reagent scheme in clayey ore flotation, based on the specific structure and properties of different clay minerals.

Regioselective Approach to Characterizing Increased Edge Availability in Layered Crystal Materials following Layer Expansion: Reaction of Kaolinite with Octadecyltrimethylammonium Salts

In this paper, the regioselective reactions of kaolinite and methoxy-modified kaolinite (MeO-Kaol), methanol-expanded kaolinite, with octadecyltrimethylammonium salts are compared. This study mainly concerns the reactions of kaolinite or MeO-Kaol with octadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (C18TAC) in methanol and the subsequent exhaustive washing of the resultant products with ethanol. X-ray diffraction patterns of the products reveal no intercalation of C18TAC between pristine kaolinite layers. Additionally, intercalation and subsequent deintercalation of C18TAC proceed in the product using MeO-Kaol. In the Fourier-transform infrared spectra, the intensities of CH2 stretching bands of the product prepared using MeO-Kaol drastically increase compared to those using kaolinite. In addition, CH2 stretching bands of the product using kaolinite are hardly observed without enlarging the spectrum. The product using MeO-Kaol also displays mass loss in the range of 200-300 °C in the thermogravimetric curve and a nitrogen content with 0.15 mass% estimated using the CHN analysis. These results therefore demonstrate an increase in the available reactive edges in the layered crystal material following an expansion of the stacked layers.

Enhancement of the sewage sludge dewaterability by using ethanol and Fe(III)-rice husk

Proteins of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in sewage sludge play a key role in the sludge dewatering. Ethanol can denature proteins and improve sludge dewaterability. In this study, ethanol was used to precondition and combined with Fe³⁺ and rice husk (RH) for dewatering enhancement. The experimental results of the capillary suction time (CST) reduction efficiency indicated that the sewage sludge pretreated with ethanol and Fe³⁺-RH revealed well cooperative formation mechanism with regard to dewatering performance. Using the response surface methodology (RSM) determined that CST reduction efficiency of sewage sludge reached 78.5% under optimal conditions of ethanol 25.21 g/g dry solid (DS), Fe³⁺ 185.70 mg/g DS, and RH 406.02 mg/g DS, respectively. Moreover, the results showed that the composite conditioner is effective for the specific resistance to filtration decreased from initial 1.66E + 13 m/kg to 2.44E + 11 m/kg. The analysis of EPS showed that extractable proteins in EPS increased to maximum when the sludge was pretreated by Fe³⁺-RH because EPS were destroyed and proteins in EPS were released. After the addition of ethanol, extractable protein content was reduced because of protein precipitation and released interstitial water and bound water. The sludge morphology analysis indicated that the RH as a skeleton builder provided the outflow passages, which enhanced the dewatering performance of sludge. From these results, the combination treatment of ethanol and Fe³⁺-RH is a promising synergetic strategy to enhance the dewaterability of sewage sludge.

Evaluation of Dietary Palygorskite Supplementation on Growth Performance, Mineral Accumulations, Antioxidant Capacities, and Meat Quality of Broilers Fed Lead-Contaminated Diet

The objective of this study was to evaluate influence of dietary palygorskite (Pal) supplementation on growth performance, mineral accumulations in the tissues (livers, kidneys, and muscles), antioxidant capacities, and meat quality of broilers fed lead (Pb)-contaminated diet. One-hundred forty-four male broiler chicks were randomly divided into three treatment groups, receiving a corn-soybean meal basal diet (the control group), the basal diet contaminated with 10 mg/kg Pb (the Pb group), and the basal diet with 10-g/kg Pal supplementation and 10-mg/kg Pb contamination (the Pal/Pb group) from 1 to 42 days of age, respectively. Treatments did not affect growth performance of broilers in the 42-day study (P > 0.05). Compared with the control group, Pb contamination increased Pb accumulation in the livers, kidneys, and muscles (P < 0.05); elevated malondialdehyde accumulation in the livers, kidneys, and breast muscles; glutathione peroxidase activity in the livers and superoxide dismutase activity in the kidneys (P < 0.05); exacerbated drip loss in the pectoralis muscles (P < 0.05); and reduced glutathione peroxidase activity in the pectoralis muscles (P < 0.05) of broilers at 42 days of age. The values of these parameters were reversed in the Pal/Pb group to levels comparable with those in the control group (P < 0.05). Additionally, Pal supplementation reduced redness value in the pectoralis muscles (P < 0.05), and decreased Cu concentration in the pectoralis muscles and livers at 42 days of age as well as its accumulation in the kidneys at both 21 and 42 days of age compared with the other two groups (P < 0.05). The results suggested that dietary Pal supplementation would decrease Pb residue in the tissues, alleviate oxidative stress, and affect meat quality of broilers exposed to Pb.

Layer like porous materials with hierarchical structure

Many chemical compositions produce layered solids consisting of extended sheets with thickness not greater than a few nanometers. The layers are weakly bonded together in a crystal and can be modified into various nanoarchitectures including porous hierarchical structures. Several classes of 2-dimensional (2D) materials have been extensively studied and developed because of their potential usefulness as catalysts and sorbents. They are discussed in this review with focus on clays, layered transition metal oxides, silicates, layered double hydroxides, metal(iv) phosphates and phosphonates, especially zirconium, and zeolites. Pillaring and delamination are the primary methods for structural modification and pore tailoring. The reported approaches are described and compared for the different classes of materials. The methods of characterization include identification by X-ray diffraction and microscopy, pore size analysis and activity assessment by IR spectroscopy and catalytic testing. The discovery of layered zeolites was a fundamental breakthrough that created unprecedented opportunities because of (i) inherent strong acid sites that make them very active catalytically, (ii) porosity through the layers and (iii) bridging of 2D and 3D structures. Approximately 16 different types of layered zeolite structures and modifications have been identified as distinct forms. It is also expected that many among the over 200 recognized zeolite frameworks can produce layered precursors. Additional advances enabled by 2D zeolites include synthesis of layered materials by design, hierarchical structures obtained by direct synthesis and top-down preparation of layered materials from 3D frameworks.
