Molecularly imprinted polymer microspheres prepared by Pickering emulsion polymerization for selective solid-phase extraction of eight bisphenols from human urine samples

High-Performance enrichment and sensitive analysis of bisphenol and its analogues in water and milk using a novel Ni-Based cationic Metal-Organic framework

A novel cationic metal-organic framework (iMOF-Ni) was designed and synthesized by a solvothermal method. It was fabricated as a solid-phase extraction (SPE) cartridge and exhibited high adsorption performance for Bisphenols (BPs). The theoretical simulation demonstrated that the adsorption mechanism between iMOF-Ni and BPs was attributed to cation-π bonding, π-π interaction, and electrostatic interactions. Under optimized SPE, a method for analyzing BPs was established by combining high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection (HPLC-DAD). The developed method has good linearity (R2 ≥ 0.994), low detection limits (0.07-0.16 ng/mL), and good reproducibility (1.72-6.35 %, n = 6). The applicability of the method was further evaluated by analyzing water and milk samples. Recoveries of four BPs in spiked samples were from 72.2 % to 96.6 %.

Ultrasonic synthesis of magnetic covalent organic frameworks and application magnetic solid phase extraction for rapid adsorption of trace bisphenols in food samples

A simple ultrasonic synthesis strategy was developed for a novel magnetic covalent organic framework. Firstly, the Fe3O4 nanoparticles were encapsulated by imine-type COF, which generated by the Schiff reaction of 4,4',4''-(1,3,5-Triazine-2,4,6-triyl)-trianiline (TAPT) and tris(4-formylphenyl)-amine (TFPA) using ultrasonic synthesis method within 2 h. The synthesised nanocomposites showed a sizeable specific surface area, and high adsorption capacity. A fast, sensitive MSPE method with Fe3O4@TAPT-TFPA-COF as adsorbent for analysing bisphenol compounds was developed. This method's advantages were simple operation, short extraction time, and avoidance of the use of centrifugal equipment. The method validation indicate that this method exhibited superior linearity, and detection limits range between 0.33 and 0.60 μg L-1. The recoveries of BPs ranged from 74.7 % to 107.0 %, with relative standard deviations of less than 3.8 % in water, milk, vinegar, and soy sauce samples. The proposed method was successfully applied for extracting BPs in food samples.

Molecularly imprinted polymers for sensing/depleting human serum albumin (HSA): A critical review of recent advances and current challenges

Human serum albumin (HSA) is an essential biomacromolecule in the blood circulatory system because it carries numerous molecules, including fatty acids (FAs), bilirubin, metal ions, hormones, and different pharmaceuticals, and plays a significant role in regulating blood osmotic pressure. Fluctuations in HSA levels in human biofluids, particularly urine and serum, are associated with several disorders, such as elevated blood pressure, diabetes mellitus (DM), liver dysfunction, and a wide range of renal diseases. Thus, the ability to quickly and accurately measure HSA levels is important for the rapid identification of these disorders in human populations. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), well known as artificial antibodies (Abs), have been extensively used for the quantitative detection of small molecules and macromolecules, especially HSA, in recent decades. This review highlights major challenges and recent developments in the application of MIPs to detect HSA in artificial and real samples. The fabrication and application of various MIPs for the depletion of HSA are also discussed, as well as different MIP preparation approaches and strategies for overcoming obstacles that hinder the development of MIPs with high efficiency and recognition capability for HSA determination/depletion.

Large-size porous spherical 3D covalent organic framework for preconcentration of bisphenol F in water samples and orange juice

Large-size spherical sorbents with particle size of 10-50 μm are widely applied in separation fields, however it is still a great challenge to synthesize such large-size spherical covalent organic framework (COF). In this work, a type of large-size porous 3D COF was size-controablly synthesized via a two-step strategy, in which a large-size porous 3D spherical polymer was prepared first through a Pickering emulsion polymerization using nano silica as the stabilizer, and subsequently it was converted into porous spherical 3D COF by a solvothermal method. The as-prepared porous spherical COF (COF-320 as a model) showed size-controllable uniform spherical morphology within 15-45 μm, large specific surface area, fine crystalline structure, and good chemical stability. When used as the sorbent for dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE) of bisphenol F (BPF), the porous spherical COF-320 (15 μm) displayed high adsorption capacity (Qmax = 335.6 mg/g), high enrichment factor (80 folds), and good reusability (at least five cycles). By coupling the d-SPE method to HPLC, a new analytical approach was developed and successfully applied to the determination of trace BPF in two water samples, an orange juice and a standard sample with recoveries of 96.0-102.2 % (RSD = 1.1-1.5 %), 95.7-97.4 % (RSD = 1.4-4.4 %) and 98.7 % (RSD = 2.3 %), respectively. The limit of detection (S/N = 3) and limit of quantification (S/N = 10) were 0.1 and 0.3 ng/mL, respectively. The new synthesis strategy opens a viable way to prepare large-size porous spherical COFs, and the developed analytical method can be potentially applied to sensitively detect the trace BPF in water samples and beverages.

Novel molecularly imprinted nanogel modified microfluidic paper-based SERS substrate for simultaneous detection of bisphenol A and bisphenol S traces in plastics

Paper-based surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) optical nanoprobes provide ultrasensitive analyte detection; however, they lack selectivity, making them difficult to use in real-world sample analysis without a pretreatment process. This work describes the design of a microfluidic paper-based SERS substrate based on molecularly imprinted nanogels decorated with silver nanoparticles to simultaneously detect bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol S (BPS) traces in plastic toys and receipts. The synthesized nanogels have two characteristics that boost SERS performance: molecularly imprinted cavities that allow for selective adsorption and a wrinkled surface that creates uniformly distributed hot spots. Simple paper-based sensor devices were built as 'drop and read' SERS substrates with a separate reservoir to detect a single target, while advanced SERS platforms were designed as a microfluidic chip with two reservoirs connected by a channel for simultaneous detection of BPA and BPS. The SERS platform with a single reservoir showed outstanding analytical performance for the detection of BPA and BPS, with low detection limits of 0.38 pM and 0.37 pM, respectively. The microfluidic paper-based sensor allowed simultaneous and selective detection of BPA and BPS with detection limits estimated at 0.68 nM and 0.47 nM, respectively. The developed sensors are successfully applied to detect BPA and BPS in plastic products and receipts. Finally, the results obtained with our method showed greater sensitivity than those of commercially available ELISA kits, and the acquired values within the ELISA detection range were in excellent agreement.

An Overview on Recent Advances in Biomimetic Sensors for the Detection of Perfluoroalkyl Substances

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of materials that have been widely used in the industrial production of a wide range of products. After decades of bioaccumulation in the environment, research has demonstrated that these compounds are toxic and potentially carcinogenic. Therefore, it is essential to map the extent of the problem to be able to remediate it properly in the next few decades. Current state-of-the-art detection platforms, however, are lab based and therefore too expensive and time-consuming for routine screening. Traditional biosensor tests based on, e.g., lateral flow assays may struggle with the low regulatory levels of PFAS (ng/mL), the complexity of environmental matrices and the presence of coexisting chemicals. Therefore, a lot of research effort has been directed towards the development of biomimetic receptors and their implementation into handheld, low-cost sensors. Numerous research groups have developed PFAS sensors based on molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) or aptamers. In order to transform these research efforts into tangible devices and implement them into environmental applications, it is necessary to provide an overview of these research efforts. This review aims to provide this overview and critically compare several technologies to each other to provide a recommendation for the direction of future research efforts focused on the development of the next generation of biomimetic PFAS sensors.

Water-Floating Hydrogel Polymer Microsphere Composites for Application in Hydrological Mining of Cu(II) Ions

Innovative materials and technologies capable of extraction and recovery of technologically relevant metal ions from various water sources, such as lakes, oceans, ponds, or wastewater reservoirs, are in great demand. Polymer beads are among the most well-known solid-phase adsorbents and ion exchangers employed in metal ion recovery. On the other hand, hydrogels are an emerging platform for producing innovative adsorbents, which are environmentally friendly and biocompatible materials. In this work, we take advantage of both technologies and produce a new type of material by loading nanostructured polymer microsphere adsorbent into a PVA matrix to obtain a hydrogel polymer microsphere (HPM) composite in the form of a block. The main role of the poly(4-vinylpyrridine-co-methacrylic acid) microspheres is to adsorb metal ions, such as Cu(II), from model water samples. The secondary role of these microspheres in the hydrogel is to change the hydrogel morphology by softening it and stabilizing it under a foam-like morphology. The foam-like morphology endows these composites with the capability of floating on water surfaces. In this work, we report, for the first time, an HPM composite capable of floating on water surfaces and extracting Cu(II) ions from model water samples. This could enable more environmentally friendly hydrological mining technologies by simply deploying adsorbents on water surfaces for metal ion extraction and recovery, thus eliminating the need for water pumping and mechanical processing steps.

Synthesis of a New Molecularly Imprinted Polymer and Optimisation of Phenylglyoxylic Acid Extraction from Human Urine Samples Using a Central Composite Design within the Response Surface Methodology

Styrene, a chemical widely used in various industries, undergoes metabolic breakdown in the human body, resulting in the production of phenylglyoxylic acid (PGA). A novel molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was synthesised for selective extraction and enrichment of PGA in urine samples prior to high-performance liquid chromatography. The MIP employed in this research was a 4-vinylpyridine molecularly imprinted polymer (4-VPMIP) prepared via mass polymerisation using a noncovalent method. The structural and morphological characteristics of the molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) and non-imprinted polymers (NIPs) were evaluated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The efficiency of the molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction (MISPE) process was optimised by investigating critical variables such as sample pH, sorbent mass, sample flow rate, and volume of the elution solvent. A central composite design (CCD) within the response surface methodology was utilised to develop separate models for the adsorption and desorption steps. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) confirmed the excellent fit of the experimental data to the proposed response models. Under the optimised conditions, the molecularly imprinted polymers exhibited a higher degree of selectivity and affinity for PGA, with a relative selectivity coefficient (α) of 2.79 against hippuric acid. The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) for PGA were determined to be 0.5 mg/L and 1.6 mg/L, respectively. The recoveries of PGA ranged from 97.32% to 99.06%, with a relative standard deviation (RSD) lower than 4.6%. Furthermore, MIP(4VP)SPE demonstrated the potential for recycling up to three times without significant loss in analyte recovery.

Molecularly Imprinted Polymer-Based Biomimetic Systems for Sensing Environmental Contaminants, Biomarkers, and Bioimaging Applications

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), a biomimetic artificial receptor system inspired by the human body's antibody-antigen reactions, have gained significant attraction in the area of sensor development applications, especially in the areas of medical, pharmaceutical, food quality control, and the environment. MIPs are found to enhance the sensitivity and specificity of typical optical and electrochemical sensors severalfold with their precise binding to the analytes of choice. In this review, different polymerization chemistries, strategies used in the synthesis of MIPs, and various factors influencing the imprinting parameters to achieve high-performing MIPs are explained in depth. This review also highlights the recent developments in the field, such as MIP-based nanocomposites through nanoscale imprinting, MIP-based thin layers through surface imprinting, and other latest advancements in the sensor field. Furthermore, the role of MIPs in enhancing the sensitivity and specificity of sensors, especially optical and electrochemical sensors, is elaborated. In the later part of the review, applications of MIP-based optical and electrochemical sensors for the detection of biomarkers, enzymes, bacteria, viruses, and various emerging micropollutants like pharmaceutical drugs, pesticides, and heavy metal ions are discussed in detail. Finally, MIP's role in bioimaging applications is elucidated with a critical assessment of the future research directions for MIP-based biomimetic systems.

Sensitive determination of bisphenols in environmental samples by magnetic porous carbon solid-phase extraction combined with capillary electrophoresis

Bisphenol compounds exist widely in the environment and pose potential hazards to the environment and human health, which has aroused widespread concern. Therefore, there is an urgent need for an efficient and sensitive analytical method to enrich and determine trace bisphenols in environmental samples. In this work, magnetic porous carbon (MPC) was synthesized by one-step pyrolysis combined with a solvothermal method for magnetic solid-phase extraction of bisphenols. The structural properties of MPC were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and saturation magnetization analysis. Its adsorption properties were evaluated by adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm studies. By optimizing the magnetic solid-phase extraction and capillary electrophoresis separation conditions, a capillary electrophoresis separation and detection method for four bisphenols was successfully constructed. The results showed that the detection limits of the proposed method for the four bisphenols were 0.71-1.65 ng/mL, the intra-day and inter-day precisions were 2.27-4.03% and 2.93-4.42%, respectively, and the recoveries were 87.68%-108.0%. In addition, the MPC could be easily recycled and utilized, and even if the magnetic solid-phase extraction was repeated 5 times, the extraction efficiency could still be kept above 75%.

Highly efficient nanocomposites based on molecularly imprinted magnetic covalent organic frameworks for selective extraction of bisphenol A from liquid matrices

Highly efficient nanocomposites, hydrophobic molecularly imprinted magnetic covalent organic frameworks (MI-MCOF), have been farbricated by a facile Schiff-base reaction. The MI-MCOF was based on terephthalaldehyde (TPA) and 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl) benzene (TAPB) as functional monomer and crosslinker, anhydrous acetic acid as catalyst, bisphenol AF as dummy template, and NiFe₂O₄ as magnetic core. This organic framework significantly reduced the time consumption of conventional imprinted polymerization and avoided the use of traditional initiator and cross-linking agents. The synthesized MI-MCOF exhibited superior magnetic responsivity and affinity, as well as high selectivity and kinetics for bisphenol A (BPA) in water and urine samples. The equilibrium adsorption capacity (Q_e) of BPA on the MI-MCOF was 50.65 mg g^-1, which was 3-7-fold higher than of its three structural analogues. The imprinting factor of BPA reached up to 3.17, and the selective coefficients of three analogues were all > 2.0, evidencing the excellent selectivity of fabricated nanocomposites to BPA. Based on the MI-MCOF nanocomposites, the magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE), combined with HPLC and fluorescence detection (HPLC-FLD), offered superior analytical performance: wide linear range of 0.1-100 μg L^-1, high correlation coefficient of 0.9996, low limit of detection of 0.020 μg L^-1, good recoveries of 83.5-110%, and relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 0.5-5.7% in environmental water, beverage, and human urine samples. Consequently, the MI-MCOF-MSPE/HPLC-FLD method provides a good prospect in selective extraction of BPA from complex matrices while replacing traditional magnetic separation and adsorption materials.

Application of Molecularly Imprinted Electrochemical Biomimetic Sensors for Detecting Small Molecule Food Contaminants

Environmental chemical contaminants in food seriously impact human health and food safety. Successful detection methods can effectively monitor the potential risk of emerging chemical contaminants. Among them, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) based on electrochemical biomimetic sensors overcome many drawbacks of conventional detection methods and offer opportunities to detect contaminants with simple equipment in an efficient, sensitive, and low-cost manner. We searched eligible papers through the Web of Science (2000-2022) and PubMed databases. Then, we introduced the sensing mechanism of MIPs, outlined the sample preparation methods, and summarized the MIP characterization and performance. The classification of electrochemistry, as well as its advantages and disadvantages, are also discussed. Furthermore, the representative application of MIP-based electrochemical biomimetic sensors for detecting small molecular chemical contaminants, such as antibiotics, pesticides, toxins, food additives, illegal additions, organic pollutants, and heavy metal ions in food, is demonstrated. Finally, the conclusions and future perspectives are summarized and discussed.

Selective Removal of the Emerging Dye Basic Blue 3 via Molecularly Imprinting Technique

A molecularly imprinting polymer (MIP) was synthesized for Basic Blue 3 dye and applied to wastewater for the adsorption of a target template. The MIPs were synthesized by bulk polymerization using methacrylic acid (MAA) and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA). Basic Blue 3 dye (BB-3), 2,2′-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) and methanol were used as a functional monomer, cross linker, template, initiator and porogenic solvent, respectively, while non-imprinting polymers (NIP) were synthesized by the same procedure but without template molecules. The contact time was 25 min for the adsorption of BB-3 dye from 10 mL of spiked solution using 25 mg polymer. The adsorption of dye (BB-3) on the MIP followed the pseudo-second order kinetic (k₂ = 0.0079 mg·g⁻¹·min⁻¹), and it was according to the Langmuir isotherm, with maximum adsorption capacities of 78.13, 85.4 and 99.0 mg·g⁻¹ of the MIP at 283 K, 298 K and 313 K, respectively and 7 mg·g⁻¹ for the NIP. The negative values of ΔG° indicate that the removal of dye by the molecularly imprinting polymer and non-imprinting polymer is spontaneous, and the positive values of ΔH° and ΔS° indicate that the process is endothermic and occurred with the increase of randomness. The selectivity of the MIP for BB-3 dye was investigated in the presence of structurally similar as well as different dyes, but the MIP showed higher selectivity than the NIP. The imprinted polymer showed 96% rebinding capacity at 313 K towards the template, and the calculated imprinted factor and Kd value were 10.73 and 2.62, respectively. In this work, the MIP showed a greater potential of selectivity for the template from wastewater relative to the closely similar compounds.

An Update on the Use of Molecularly Imprinted Polymers in Beta-Blocker Drug Analysis as a Selective Separation Method in Biological and Environmental Analysis

Beta-blockers are antihypertensive drugs and can be abused by athletes in some sport competitions; it is therefore necessary to monitor beta-blocker levels in biological samples. In addition, beta-blocker levels in environmental samples need to be monitored to determine whether there are contaminants from the activities of the pharmaceutical industry. Several extraction methods have been developed to separate beta-blocker drugs in a sample, one of which is molecularly imprinted polymer solid-phase extraction (MIP-SPE). MIPs have some advantages, including good selectivity, high affinity, ease of synthesis, and low cost. This review provides an overview of the polymerization methods for synthesizing MIPs of beta-blocker groups. The methods that are still widely used to synthesize MIPs for beta-blockers are the bulk polymerization method and the precipitation polymerization method. MIPs for beta-blockers still need further development, especially since many types of beta-blockers have not been used as templates in the MIP synthesis process and modification of the MIP sorbent is required, to obtain high throughput analysis.

Rapid exposure monitoring of six bisphenols and diethylstilbestrol in human urine using fabric phase sorptive extraction followed by high performance liquid chromatography - photodiode array analysis

A novel fabric phase sorptive extraction protocol is developed for rapid exposure monitoring of six bisphenol analogues, including bisphenol A, bisphenol S, bisphenol F, bisphenol E, bisphenol B, bisphenol C, and diethylstilbestrol (DES) from human urine prior to high-performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array analysis. FPSE sample pretreatment protocol ensures the harmonization of the proposed method with the principles of Green Analytical Chemistry (GAC). Among eighteen evaluated FPSE membranes, sol-gel poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) coated cellulose FPSE membrane resulted in the most efficient extraction. This polar FPSE membrane effectively exploits a number of advantageous features inherent to FPSE including sponge-like porous architecture of the sol-gel sorbent coating, favorable surface chemistry, flexibility and built-in permeability of cellulose fabric substrate, high primary contact surface area for rapid sorbent-analyte interaction, expanded pH, solvent and thermal stability as well as reusability of the FPSE membrane. Optimization was centered on the evaluation of critical parameters, namely the size of the FPSE membrane, the elution solvent mixture, the volume of the sample, the extraction time, the elution time, the kind of the external agitation mechanical stimulus, the ionic strength and the pH of the sample. The chromatographic separation was achieved on a Spherisorb C18 column and a gradient elution program with mobile phase consisted of 0.05 ammonium acetate solution and acetonitrile. The total analysis time was 17.4 min. The developed method was validated in terms of linearity, sensitivity, selectivity, precision, accuracy, stability, and ruggedness. The limits of detection and quantification varied from 0.26-0.62 ng/mL and 0.8-1.9 ng/mL, respectively. The relative recoveries were calculated between 90.6 and 108.8%, while the RSD values were <10% in all cases. The effectiveness of the proposed method was confirmed by its successful implementation in the bioanalysis of real urine samples.

Molecularly imprinted polymers - towards electrochemical sensors and electronic tongues

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are artificially synthesized materials to mimic the molecular recognition process of biological macromolecules such as substrate-enzyme or antigen-antibody. The combination of these biomimetic materials with electrochemical techniques has allowed the development of advanced sensing devices, which significantly improve the performance of bare or catalyst-modified sensors, being able to unleash new applications. However, despite the high selectivity that MIPs exhibit, those can still show some cross-response towards other compounds, especially with chemically analogous (bio)molecules. Thus, the combination of MIPs with chemometric methods opens the room for the development of what could be considered a new type of electronic tongues, i.e. sensor array systems,  based on its usage. In this direction, this review provides an overview of the more common synthetic approaches, as well as the strategies that can be used to achieve the integration of MIPs and electrochemical sensors, followed by some recent examples over different areas in order to illustrate the potential of such combination in very diverse applications.

Imprinting Technology for Effective Sorbent Fabrication: Current State-of-Art and Future Prospects

In the last 10 years, we have witnessed an extensive development of instrumental techniques in analytical methods for determination of various molecules and ions at very low concentrations. Nevertheless, the presence of interfering components of complex samples hampered the applicability of new analytical strategies. Thus, additional sample pre-treatment steps were proposed to overcome the problem. Solid sorbents were used for clean-up samples but insufficient selectivity of commercial materials limited their utility. Here, the application of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) or ion-imprinted polymers (IIPs) in the separation processes have recently attracted attention due to their many advantages, such as high selectivity, robustness, and low costs of the fabrication process. Bulk or monoliths, microspheres and core-shell materials, magnetically susceptible and stir-bar imprinted materials are applicable to different modes of solid-phase extraction to determine target analytes and ions in a very complex environment such as blood, urine, soil, or food. The capability to perform a specific separation of enantiomers is a substantial advantage in clinical analysis. The ion-imprinted sorbents gained interest in trace analysis of pollutants in environmental samples. In this review, the current synthetic approaches for the preparation of MIPs and IIPs are comprehensively discussed together with a detailed characterization of respective materials. Furthermore, the use of sorbents in environmental, food, and biomedical analyses will be emphasized to point out current limits and highlight the future prospects for further development in the field.

A new approach based on inversion of a partial least squares model searching for a preset analytical target profile. Application to the determination of five bisphenols by liquid chromatography with diode array detector

The paper shows a procedure for selecting the control method parameters (factors) to obtain a preset 'analytical target profile' when a liquid chromatographic technique is going to be carried out for the simultaneous determination of five bisphenols (bisphenol-A, bisphenol-S, bisphenol-F, bisphenol-Z and bisphenol-AF), some of them regulated by the European Union. The procedure has three steps. The first consists of building a D-optimal combined design (mixture-process design) for the control method parameters, which are the composition of the ternary mobile phase and its flow rate. The second step is to fit a PLS2 model to predict six analytical responses (namely, the resolution between each pair of consecutive peaks, and the initial and final chromatographic time) as a function of the control method parameters. The third final step is the inversion of the PLS2 model to obtain the conditions needed for attaining a preset analytical target profile. The computational inversion of the PLS2 prediction model looking for the Pareto front of these six responses provides a set of experimental conditions to conduct the chromatographic determination, specifically 22% of water, mixed with 58% methanol and 20% of acetonitrile, keeping the flow rate at 0.66 mL min^-1. These conditions give a chromatogram with retention times of 2.180, 2.452, 2.764, 3.249 and 3.775 min for BPS, BPF, BPA, BPAF and BPZ, respectively, and excellent resolution among all the chromatographic peaks. Finally, the analytical method is validated under the selected experimental conditions, in terms of trueness and precision. In addition, the detection capability for the five bisphenols were: 596, 334, 424, 458 and 1156 μg L^-1, with probabilities of false positive and of false negative equal to 0.05.

Recent advances and applications of molecularly imprinted polymers in solid-phase extraction for real sample analysis

Sample pretreatment is essential for the analysis of complicated real samples due to their complex matrices and low analyte concentrations. Among all sample pretreatment methods, solid-phase extraction is arguably the most frequently used one. However, the majority of available solid-phase extraction adsorbents suffer from limited selectivity. Molecularly imprinted polymers are a type of tailor-made artificial antibodies and receptors with specific recognition sites for target molecules. Using molecularly imprinted polymers instead of conventional adsorbents can greatly improve the selectivity of solid-phase extraction, and therefore molecularly imprinted polymer-based solid-phase extraction has been widely applied to separation, clean up and/or preconcentration of target analytes in various kinds of real samples. In this article, after a brief introduction, the recent developments and applications of molecularly imprinted polymer-based solid-phase extraction for determination of different analytes in complicated real samples during the 2015-2020 are reviewed systematically, including the solid-phase extraction modes, molecularly imprinted adsorbent types and their preparations, and the practical applications of solid-phase extraction to various real samples (environmental, food, biological, and pharmaceutical samples). Finally, the challenges and opportunities of using molecularly imprinted polymer-based solid-phase extraction for real sample analysis are discussed.

Application of molecularly imprinted polymers for the separation and detection of aflatoxin

Aflatoxins are extremely harmful carcinogens to humans and animals. In recent years, attention has been directed toward the application of molecular imprinting polymers for the separation and detection of aflatoxin. In this review, polymerization methods for the preparation of molecular imprinting polymers for aflatoxin detection, such as lump-bulk polymerization, spherical molecular imprinting polymer synthesis, surface-imprinted polymerization, and electropolymerization, are described. The applications of molecular imprinting polymers in solid-phase extraction, biosensors, and the surface-enhanced Raman detection of aflatoxin are also reviewed in this paper.

A surfactant-mediated sol-gel method for the preparation of molecularly imprinted polymers and its application in a biomimetic immunoassay for the detection of protein

Molecularly imprinted polymers have demonstrated tremendous potential in the immunoassay as alternatives to biological antibodies. However, the production of molecularly imprinted polymers for protein remains great challenges because of structural complexity and organic solvent instability. In addition, non-specific binding sites in the molecularly imprinted polymers debase the feasibility of it as alternative to antibodies for immunoassay. Here, a surfactant-mediated sol-gel system in an aqueous environment was designed to produce the molecularly imprinted polymers for protein. A blocked strategy was introduced to decrease non-specific cross-reactivity and to improve the selectivity. The developed products were characterized by infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometer, respectively. The obtained molecularly imprinted polymers exhibited desirable specific recognition towards the target and a biomimetic immunoassay method was developed. The method exhibited a good linear response to human serum albumin in a concentration range of 1-100 μg mL^-1. The limit of detection of this method was 0.3 μg mL^-1 (3s/K), and good recoveries ranging from 85.4-104.5% were achieved. This study demonstrated that the molecularly imprinted polymers prepared by the surfactant-mediated sol-gel method can produce high selectivity materials, which had great potential to replace antibodies in a biomimetic immunoassay.

Microsphere Polymers in Molecular Imprinting: Current and Future Perspectives

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are specific crosslinked polymers that exhibit binding sites for template molecules. MIPs have been developed in various application areas of biology and chemistry; however, MIPs have some problems, including an irregular material shape. In recent years, studies have been conducted to overcome this drawback, with the synthesis of uniform microsphere MIPs or molecularly imprinted microspheres (MIMs). The polymer microsphere is limited to a minimum size of 5 nm and a molecular weight of 10,000 Da. This review describes the methods used to produce MIMs, such as precipitation polymerisation, controlled/'Living' radical precipitation polymerisation (CRPP), Pickering emulsion polymerisation and suspension polymerisation. In addition, some green chemistry aspects and future perspectives will also be given.

A molecularly imprinted electrochemiluminescence nanoprobe based on complexes consisting of CdTe and multiwall carbon nanotube for sensitive determination of clenbuterol

An electrochemiluminescence (ECL) nanoprobe was fabricated for the determination of clenbuterol (CLB). A molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) film was coated on the surface of the glassy carbon electrode modified with CdTe-doped multiwall carbon nanotubes. The MIP film with CLB as the template molecule improves the selectivity of the nanoprobe, CdTe is used as ECL signal amplifier, and MWCNT works as the carrier. The ECL intensity is altered by elution and reabsorption of CLB. The possible reaction mechanism and experimental parameters of the nanoprobe are discussed. Under optimized conditions, the quenched ECL intensity and the CLB concentration have a linear relationship in the range 2.3 × 10^-9 to 1.5 × 10^-5 mol·L^-1, and the detection limit is 1.0 × 10^-9 mol·L^-1 (S/N = 3). The nanoprobe was successfully applied to the determination of CLB in pork samples. Effects of prepolymerization on surface molecularly imprinted polymer for rapid separation and analysis of sulfonamides in water

This work systematically investigated the effects of prepolymerization on the property of multi-templates surface molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP), which was utilized to quickly and simultaneously separate and detect six sulfonamides (sulfadiazine, sulfathiazole, sulfamerazine, sulfamethazine, sulfamethoxazole and sulfadoxine) in real waters. The MIPs were prepared using the six sulfonamides as the templates, mesoporous silica supported onto the surface of magnetic graphene oxide as the carrier and 4-vinylbenzoic as the functional monomer, with and without prepolymerization of templates with functional monomer. The preparation and adsorption conditions were optimized. It was found that the adsorption capacities of the selected six sulfonamides on the MIP (pre) prepared with prepolymerization were apparently higher than those on the MIP (no pre) synthesized without prepolymerization. Subsequently, the MIPs were utilized as adsorbents for SPE of these sulfonamides, and coupled with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for the determination of sulfonamides. The developed analytical method showed outstanding applicability for the detection of trace sulfonamides in real water samples. The spiked recoveries and relative standard deviations (RSDs) of the six sulfonamides using MIP (no pre) and MIP (pre) were 73.34-99.43% and 87.37-102.34%, 2.28-7.77% and 3.18-6.49%, respectively.

Bioaccumulation investigation of bisphenol A in HepG2 cells and zebrafishes enabled by cobalt magnetic polystyrene microsphere derived carbon based magnetic solid-phase extraction

A magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) technique coupled with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was developed and used for bioaccumulation investigation of bisphenol A (BPA) in HepG2 cells and zebrafishes. Cobalt magnetic polystyrene microsphere derived carbon (C-Co@PST) as an adsorbent was prepared by in situ polymerization reaction and further annealing treatment. Scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction were employed to confirm successful synthesis of C-Co@PST. A series of extraction parameters including the amount of the sorbent, the type of elute, extraction time and elution time were investigated to achieve high extraction efficiency. C-Co@PST based MSPE combined with HPLC was successfully established for bioaccumulation research of BPA in living creatures. It was found that the bioconcentration values of BPA in HepG2 cells underwent an increase, then a decrease, and finally reached an equilibrium level of 11.60 μg kg-1 at 8 h. The concentration of BPA in zebrafishes increased ranging from 6.05 μg kg-1 to 31.84 μg kg-1 over a culture time from 1 h to 12 h. Furthermore, linear and exponential models were employed to analyse the bioconcentration variation of BPA in organisms over the exposure time. Mathematical models have been developed to predict the transfer characteristics of BPA.

Artificial Cytochrome c Mimics: Graphene Oxide-Fe(III) Complex-Coated Molecularly Imprinted Colloidosomes for Selective Photoreduction of Highly Toxic Pollutants

Our previous works showed that the molecularly imprinted TiO₂ photocatalyst has been one of the most efficient materials for selective photooxidation of highly toxic organic pollutants (HTOPs) from complicated wastewater. However, some highly toxic pollutants (e.g., heavy metals) are very stable under the oxidizing environment. Therefore, the design of enzyme-like catalysts to selectively reduce highly toxic pollutants is extremely needed. In this work, inspired by the bioreduction ability of cytochrome c (cyt c, a heme containing metalloprotein), we presented a simple and efficient way to generate an artificial cyt c mimic (ACM) using graphene oxide (GO)-Fe(III) complex-coated molecularly imprinted colloidosomes. Prior to loading of Fe(III) centers to GO for constructing ACMs, GO-coated molecularly imprinted colloidosomes were synthesized via Pickering emulsion polymerization. Similar to a nature cyt c, the ACM contained both the molecular recognition element (molecularly imprinted cavity) and the non-heme electron sink (GO-Fe(III) complex), which resulted in the ACMs having good selectivity toward the enzyme-like reduction of the highly toxic target Cr(VI). Moreover, by using HepG2 cells as model cells, the Cr(VI) solution after treating by ACMs was proved to be safe and nontoxic. To confirm that the present method was universal for constructing ACMs, various GO-Fe(III) complex-coated molecularly imprinted colloidosomes, which could selectively photoreduce other highly toxic inorganic ions and organic pollutants, were also investigated. The ACMs described herein will act as a vector that encourages the design of more functional non-heme enzymes in sensing, environmental separation, clinical diagnose, and delivery of therapeutic agents.

Colorimetric determination of tetrabromobisphenol A based on enzyme-mimicking activity and molecular recognition of metal-organic framework-based molecularly imprinted polymers

A sol-gel method is presented to synthesize molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) composed with a copper-based metal-organic framework (referred to as MIP/HKUST-1) on a paper support to selectively recognize tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA). The imprinting factor is 7.6 and the maximum adsorption capacity is 187.3 mg g^-1. This is much better than data for other MIPs. The degradation of TBBPA is introduced in the procedure. Due to the selective recognition by the MIP, the enzyme-mimicking properties of HKUST-1 under the MIP layer became weak due to the decrease of residue imprinted cavities. And adsorbed TBBPA can be degraded under consumption of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂). The combined effect of H₂O₂ and HKUST-1 cause the coloration caused by catalytic oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine to become less distinct. This amplification strategy is used for the ultrasensitive and highly selective colorimetric determination of TBBPA. The gray intensity is proportional to the logarithm concentration of TBBPA in the range of 0.01-10 ng g^-1. The limit of detection is as low as 3 pg g^-1, and the blank intensities caused by TBBPA analogues are <1% of that caused by TBBPA at the same concentration, this implying excellent selectivity. The spiked recoveries ranged from 94.4 to 106.6% with relative standard deviation values that were no more than 8.6%. Other features include low costs, rapid response, easy operation and on-site testing. A novel strategy for selective removal and rapid collection of triclosan from aquatic environment using magnetic molecularly imprinted nano-polymers

Triclosan (TCS) is a kind of chronic toxicity to aquatic organisms. Due to its highly effective antimicrobial, TCS has been widely applied in personal-care products, which naturally poses a potential risk to the ecological system and human health since its release into water-ecological environment. Therefore, it urgently demands a selective, easily separated, recyclable, and low-cost adsorbent to remove the residues of TCS from aquatic environments. In this study, a novel magnetic molecularly imprinted nano-polymers (TMIPs) were prepared for selective adsorption and convenient collection of TCS in aquatic samples, based on a core-shell technique using TCS as template molecule and SiO₂-coated Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles as the support substrate. The functional groups, particle size, morphology and magnetic property of TMIPs were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscopy and vibrating sample magnetometer, respectively. The obtained TMIPs possessed excellent adsorption capacity (Q_e = 53.12 mg g^-1), speedy adsorption equilibrium time (2 min) and high selectivity (k' = 6.321) for TCS. Moreover, the pH-tolerance and stability tests manifested that the adsorption capacity of TMIPs for TCS was acid-resistance and could retain 94.2% of the maximum Q_e after 5 times removal-regeneration cycles. The feature of magnetically susceptibility can simplify the procedures of sample handling in TCS determination, because the TMIPs of TCS are easy to be recycled from aquatic samples. As an application demonstration, the toxicity test in microalgae confirmed that a tiny amount of TMIPs could significantly eliminate the toxic effect of TCS on Chlamydomonas reinhardtii via the efficient binding with TCS.

Synthesis and application of magnetic-surfaced pseudo molecularly imprinted polymers for zearalenone pretreatment in cereal samples

Zearalenone (ZEA) is a fungal contaminant widely found in grains. In cereal samples, trace zearalenone was extracted and enriched using magnetic-surfaced pseudo molecularly imprinted polymers (SPMIPs) and detected. SPMIPs were prepared with Fe₃O₄ as the magnetic core, modified halloysites nanotubes as supporting materials, and selective imprinted polymers as shells. Vinyl was modified on the surface of halloysites nanotube. SPMIPs were synthesized with pseudo templates. SPMIPs as the adsorbent of dispersed-solid phase extraction (μ-SPE) were used to purify and enrich ZEA from maize samples. After optimized, the pretreatment method was evaluated. The linearity of the method was ranged within 10-200 ng mL^-1. LOD and LOQ were 2.5 ng mL^-1 and 8 ng mL^-1 respectively. The ZEA spiking recoveries in maize samples ranged within 74.95-88.41% were with good RSDs lower than 4.25%. The developed method was successful applied in maize, oat, and wheat sample treatments and compared.
