Abstract
Co-culturing fungi and microalgae may effectively remediate wastewater containing Cd and harvest microalgae. Nevertheless, a detailed study of the mechanisms underlying the synergistic interactions between fungi and microalgae under Cd(II) exposure is lacking. In this study, Cd(II) exposure resulted in a significant enhancement of antioxidants, such as glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) compared to the control group, suggesting that the cellular antioxidant defense response was activated. Extracellular proteins and extracellular polysaccharides of the symbiotic system were increased by 60.61 % and ,24.29 %, respectively, after Cd(II) exposure for 72 h. The adsorption behavior of Cd(II) was investigated using three-dimensional fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Metabolomics results showed that the TCA cycle provided effective material and energy supply for the symbiotic system to resist the toxicity of Cd(II); Proline, histidine, and glutamine strengthened the synergistic adsorption capacity of the fungus and microalgae. Overall, the theoretical foundation for a deep comprehension of the beneficial interactions between fungi and microalgae under Cd(II) exposure and the role of the fungal-algal symbiotic system in the management of heavy metal pollution is provided by this combined physiological and metabolomic investigation.

Abstract
In this study, a novel homogeneous polysaccharide (HVP-1) was purified from the Volvariella volvacea. Its structural characteristics and anti-oxidant activity in vitro were further evaluated. The results revealed that HVP-1 was composed of mannose, glucose, galactose and arabinose in a molar ratio (mol %) of 55.37: 15.74: 25.20: 3.69. Its main chain consisted of →4)-β-D-Galp-(1→, →6)-α-D-Glcp-(1→, →3)-α-D-Glcp-(1→, →4)-β-D-Manp-(1→ and →3,6)-β-D-Manp-(1→. The branched structure α-L-Araf-(1→, →2)-β-D-Glcp-(1→ and →6)-β-D-Manp-(1→ were connected to →3,6)-β-D-Manp-(1→ through the O-3 position. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) showed that HVP-1 had porous sheet-like structure with a triple helix conformation. Anti-oxidant activity experiments showed that HVP-1 alleviated H2O2-induced oxidative damage by reducing the accumulation of reactive oxygen species, increasing the activity of related enzymes in cells, and activating the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway. These results suggested that HVP-1 had the potential to be used as a natural anti-oxidant in functional foods and pharmaceuticals.

Abstract
The cornerstone of nanomaterial-based sensing systems is the synthesis of nanoparticles with appropriate surface functionalization that ensures their stability and determines their reactivity with organic or inorganic analytes. To accomplish these requirements, various compounds are used as additives or growth factors to regulate the properties of the synthesized nanoparticles and their reactivity with the target analytes. A different rationale is to use the target analytes as additives or growth agents to control the formation and properties of nanoparticles. The main difference is that the analyte recognition event occurs before or during the formation of nanoparticles and it is based on the reactivity of the analytes with the precursor materials of the nanoparticles (e.g., metal ions, reducing agents, and coatings). The transition from the ionic (or molecular) state of the precursor materials to ordered nanostructured assemblies is used for sensing and signal transduction for the qualitative detection and the quantitative determination of the target analytes, respectively. This review focuses on assays that are based on analyte-mediated regulation of nanoparticles' formation and differentiate them from standard nanoparticle-based assays which rely on pre-synthesized nanoparticles. Firstly, the principles of analyte-mediated nanomaterial sensors are described and then they are discussed with emphasis on the sensing strategies, the signal transduction mechanisms, and their applications. Finally, the main advantages, as well as the limitations of this approach, are discussed and compared with assays that rely on pre-synthesized nanoparticles in order to highlight the major advances accomplished with this type of nano-sensors and elucidate challenges and opportunities for further evolving new nano-sensing strategies.

Abstract
In this work, the investigation mainly focused on ultrasonic-assisted dual-alkali pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis of sugarcane bagasse followed by Candida tropicalis fermentation to produce xylitol. The results showed that the combination of NaOH and ammonia water had the best effect by comparing the effects of the four single-alkali (NaOH, KOH, ammonia water, Ca(OH)2) and their mixed double-alkali pretreatments on xylose content. Then, the optimal conditions for ultrasonic-assisted pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis of sugarcane bagasse were obtained by response surface methodology. When the ratio of NaOH and ammonia water was 2:1, the mixed alkali concentration (v/v) was 17%, the ultrasonic temperature was 45°C, the ultrasonic power was 300 W, and the ultrasonic time was 40 min, the content of xylose reached a maximum of 2.431 g/L. Scanning electron microscopy showed that sugarcane bagasse by ultrasonic-assisted alkali pretreatment aggravated with more folds and furrows. Moreover, the fermentation results showed that the concentration ratio of enzymatic hydrolysate of sugarcane bagasse affected the xylitol yield, and when concentrated three times, the highest yield of xylitol (54.42%) was obtained.

Abstract
Sargassum fucoidan is a kind of sulfated heteropolysaccharide with a variety of biological activities. The aim of this study was to investigate the extraction, purification, physicochemical characterization and in vitro antithrombotic activity of fucoidan from Sargassum henslowianum C.Agardh. Hot-water-assisted ultrasound was used to extract fucoidan (F). Fucoidan was purified by DEAE cellulose 52 (F1), Vc-H2O2 (FD1) and Superdex 75 gel (FDS1). The physical and chemical properties of fucoidans were analyzed by chemical composition, monosaccharide composition, average molecular weight (Mw) and FTIR. The sulfate contents of F, F1, FD1 and FDS1 were 11.45%, 16.35% and 17.52%, 9.66%, respectively; the Mw was 5.677 × 105, 4.393 × 105, 2.176 × 104 and 6.166 × 103, respectively. The results of monosaccharide composition showed that the four fucoidans contained l-fucose, d-galactose, l-mannose, d-xylose, l-rhamnose and d-glucose, but the mass fraction ratio was different. The results of FTIR showed that fucoidan contained characteristic peaks of sugar and sulfate. In vitro, F1, FD1 and FDS1 could alleviate HUVEC damage induced by adrenaline (Adr). F1, FD1 and FDS1 decreased vWF and TF and increased the ratio of t-PA/PAI-1 in Adr-induced HUVEC.

Abstract
A simple colorimetric assay for sugars (monosaccharides, polyols and disaccharides) quantification based on silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) formation is proposed. Sugars are able to form AgNPs reducing Ag+ and stabilizing the suspension. Since the driving force is not only chemical reduction, the optimized assay allows the determination of both "reducing" and "non-reducing" sugars with similar reactivity. The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) absorption band with maximum wavelength centered at ≈ 430 nm (A430) is used for the detection. Monosaccharides, disaccharides and polyols with different functional groups and structure have been investigated: D-(+)-glucose, D-(+)-galactose, D-(-)-fructose, sucrose, D-(+)-raffinose D-(+)-maltose, D-(+)-trehalose, D-mannitol, D-sorbitol, i-inositol, xylitol and D-(+)-xylose. The resulting AgNPs have been characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The reactivity of monomers and polyols was found higher than the disaccharides. The AgNPs-based method was applied to the determination of the sugars content in soft drinks (n = 6) and apple extracts (n = 5). Sugars content (expressed as glucose equivalents) determined by the proposed assay resulted comparable to results obtained by ion chromatography (R = 0.994). Reproducibility (RSD ≤ 9.4%) and recovery values (from 86.1% to 117.7%) in food matrices were satisfactory. Moreover, the assay is selective vs. potentially interfering compounds found in food. Considering the assay time (10 min), the low cost of reagents, limited volumes of sample (5-100 μL), no use of organic solvents and low waste generation, this assay appears very promising for sugars content determination.

Abstract
Polyphenolic compounds (PCs) have received exceptional attention at the end of the past millennium and as much at the beginning of the new one. Undoubtedly, these compounds in foodstuffs provide added value for their well-known health benefits, for their technological role and also marketing. Many efforts have been made to provide simple, effective and user friendly analytical methods for the determination and antioxidant capacity (AOC) evaluation of food polyphenols. In a parallel track, over the last twenty years, nanomaterials (NMs) have made their entry in the analytical chemistry domain; NMs have, in fact, opened new paths for the development of analytical methods with the common aim to improve analytical performance and sustainability, becoming new tools in quality assurance of food and beverages. The aim of this review is to provide information on the most recent developments of new NMs-based tools and strategies for total polyphenols (TP) determination and AOC evaluation in food. In this review optical, electrochemical and bioelectrochemical approaches have been reviewed. The use of nanoparticles, quantum dots, carbon nanomaterials and hybrid materials for the detection of polyphenols is the main subject of the works reported. However, particular attention has been paid to the success of the application in real samples, in addition to the NMs. In particular, the discussion has been focused on methods/devices presenting, in the opinion of the authors, clear advancement in the fields, in terms of simplicity, rapidity and usability. This review aims to demonstrate how the NM-based approaches represent valid alternatives to classical methods for polyphenols analysis, and are mature to be integrated for the rapid quality assessment of food quality in lab or directly in the field.
